I am a technical partner at the Lehigh Valley Hospital Hazleton Emergency Department.
(machine beeping) (doors whirring) Prior to coming here, I knew about the position and knew what it entitled of what to do.
So I thought it was a great fit for me to actually come here and help in the hospital basis instead of the pre-hospital basis.
I am just making sure that all the wires are not tangled up.
And the faster you can hook them up, the faster you can get 'em treated.
(light music continues) I started about 15 years ago as an emergency medical technician certification.
It's about a six-month course.
You can take other courses also to get to this position, like a nursing assistant, LPN, a lotta other positions.
But I took the emergency services position as an EMT and found out that I was a great fit for this job.
(light music continues) So a typical day for me when I come in in the morning is make sure I get the right report from the offgoing shift, introduce myself to all the patients.
Hi, Monica, what's going on today?
- [Monica] I just came in 'cause I have lot of abdominal pain.
- And if they need any orders, if they need any water, if they are in any pain, I'll tell the nurse.
So I'm pretty much working hard with the nurse-wise on a daily basis.
(light music continues) All right, so I hear you're not feeling good.
How long has that been going on for?
- I've been for a couple of days.
Just a lot of abdominal pain and I don't know why.
- Some of the key tasks I do on a daily basis are EKGs, which is a priority here at the hospital, doing vital signs when they come in, also taking 'em to CT scan if needed be.
Once they're admitted to the hospital, we assist transport, taking them upstairs, and getting 'em settled upstairs too.
(light music continues) Most of the challenging aspects are a high acuity patients, when they're super sick, knowing that you have to take care of that one patient and you have other patients also to take care of.
But you gotta work with what you have.
(light music continues) What this job afforded me to do is, my kids do sports.
It gives me anything I could get to them, like expensive gloves, bats, you know.
They do travel a lot for that, so I have to travel for them.
We do go on some vacations, sporting events, going to Phillies games.
We just like doing all that stuff, but it gives me the pride of giving them what they need.
All right, so since you're having a lotta that pain, I'll let the nurse and the doctor know right away so we can help you as fast as we can.
I do love what I do on a daily basis.
It's just knowing that you're gonna help somebody on their worst day.
Yeah, just follow up, and then- - Okay.
- We can get you outta here and you can enjoy the rest of your day.
- Okay.
Thank you, Jared.
- You're welcome.
