Today's the first day of school, which I always like, but for my little sister, Elaina, it's the very first day of school in her life!
♪ Okay, Elaina.
It's the first day of school.
♪ How are you feeling?
Are you excited?
♪ Elaina is deaf, which means she can't hear.
So, I was just talking to her in sign language about our day.
Are you nervous?
♪ Don't worry.
♪ It's okay to be nervous.
But, you know what?
I know that your first day of school is going to be great.
You're going to make new friends and learn a lot!
(bell ringing) Oh, that's Barry the Bell.
And, he's added a new way for Elaina to tell that he's ringing.
♪ Barry... ♪ tells us when it's time to go to class.
♪ Of course, I can!
Anything for my little sister!
Let's go or we're gonna be late.
¡Vámonos, manita!
(playful horn honking) (bell ringing) - [Barry] Hello, howdy, and hi!
It's my favorite day of the year, the first day of school!
This is when we get to see all of our friends and meet new students like Eddie's sister, Elaina.
She's just starting first grade and she's a little shy.
So if you see her, please say hi.
Here's how you say "hello" in sign language.
Hola, Elaina.
Isn't it wonderful making new friends?
It really makes my ringer sing!
Speaking of singing, Mr. Jeff has a song and a story for you in his classroom.
Don't worry if you don't know where the classroom is.
Just follow the music (mystical music) and you'll find the doorway on your right.

I'm so excited to see you!
We have a fun day planned, and I want you to meet some really good friends of mine, and I know that they'll become really good friends of yours, too.

You know, the alphabet is made up of letters, and letters are very important because letters make up words.
That's how we read.
And letters have sounds, and that's how we talk and understand one another.
Let's learn each letter in the alphabet.
Our book today is all about letters and sounds.
The book is called "Super Sounds!
A to Z," written by Alex Ford, with drawings by Eddie Delaney.
"Alligator starts with A.
(water bubbling sounds) "A, alligator.
(chomp!)
"Bat starts with B.
(baseball bat cracks) "B, bat.
"Car starts with C. (engine rumbling) (car horn honking) "C, car.

When we know the letters in the alphabet and all the different sounds they make, then we can start spelling and we can even start reading, and then we can start writing!
Doesn't that sound so exciting?
(bell ringing) Oh, there's Barry, Barry the Bell.
Hey!
B, bell.
That's a "B" word!
(playful horn honking) (bell ringing) - [Barry] You betcha!
Barry the Bell starts with a B. Bravo!
(laughs) Wow, that alphabet song sure is catchy.
C, catchy.
That's a "C" word.
Next up is a word beginning with L. In fact, it's my favorite "L" word: Lunch!
(laughs) Why don't you guys go outside to the lunch tables with Eddie and Elaina to find out what's on today's menu?
¡Delicioso!
(bell ringing) (playful horn honking) - [Eddie] So Elaina, how do you like school so far?
♪ ♪ (chimes ringing) Yes, that's right!
♪ But, I wonder... ♪ what letters are we having for lunch today?
♪ (chimes ringing) ♪ (chimes ringing) ♪ (chimes ringing) ♪ (chimes ringing) ♪ (chimes ringing) ♪ (chimes ringing) You're doing so good, Elaina.
I knew you would!

What a terrific first day of school, right?
We learned so much.
First, we were introduced to the letters in the alphabet and some of the sounds that they make.
"Koala starts with K. "K, koala.
Lion.
(lion roaring) "Lion starts with L. "L, lion.
Monkey.
(monkey screeching) "Monkey starts with M. M, monkey."
Then, Eddie and Elaina practiced the alphabet by naming the food that they had for lunch!
- What letters are we having for lunch today?
♪ (chimes ringing) ♪ (chimes ringing) ♪ (chimes ringing) ♪ (chimes ringing) ♪ (chimes ringing) ♪ (chimes ringing) - And, remember when Barry played that fun game of I Spy?
- I spy with my little eye something... beginning with the letter.. B.

- [Mr. Jeff] And so, remember, the letters of the alphabet are super important!
Because, they make up the words that we speak, that we sing, that we spell, read, and write.
So, don't forget to dot your "i"s and cross your "t"s because from A through Z and all the letters in between, the alphabet is an important tool that you're going to use in so many ways every day for the rest of your life!
(playful horn honking) (bell ringing) - [Barry] Best first day ever!
We came, we learned, we conquered.
Now, we go home.
See you tomorrow for the official "second day of school!"
