Special | 27m 15sVideo has Closed Captions
The story of the Invalid Corps, Union soldiers who were disabled in the line of duty.
Created in 1863, the Invalid Corps was made up of Union soldiers who had been “disabled by wounds or by disease contracted in the line of duty." These men were to serve as guards in cities or escort prisoners of war, freeing up able-bodied men to fight at the front. However, when 15,000 Confederate troops approached Washington, DC. in July 1864, they stood as the only defense available.
