Dawg Joe, I want to tell you one of the secrets of success.
Secrets to success, sir.
It's all about education.
I don't care about that.
Oh, you should job.
Because education increases your earning potential.
What do you.
Mean, exactly?
I mean, each year of education can add $50,000 to your average annual income.
Your point by point is that if one year means 50,000, how much?
For two years?
It's 100,000.
Two times 50.
Okay, so do you understand how it works?
If a person finishes the third.
Grade, they can make 150,000.
Dollars a year.
You know, I'm really worried about you, Joe.
Me too.
When making money is the aim, these kids, they bring that game and that kids.
Should you do.
They know what you get.
You know just how to make that young man that last year so learn a little more that maybe it may change all you.
Brought to you by education.
It's academic.
Oh, man, I'm tired.
I hate having to get up so early for class.
Me too.
Sometimes I wonder if it's even worth it.
I know.
And then afterwards I just have to go home and study instead of go out and have fun.
Yeah, like, why bother?
Well, for one thing, the benefits of a higher education far outweigh the hassle of getting it.
Yeah, it really.
Is the secret to success and it makes a big difference in how much you're paid and how much respect you earn.
Yeah, but it's so expensive.
Yeah.
It's not just about college.
There's tons of vocational opportunities, technical institutes and lots ways that you can earn education and training.
Yeah, but when you're done all your life with as a diploma and that's just a piece of paper.
Well, right.
But that piece of paper shows that you're disciplined, you committed to a plan, you worked through it, and you completed a big task.
But it still costs a lot.
Well, don't think of it as an expense.
Think of it as an investment.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the average male college graduate makes 77% more than the average male who only completed high school.
You say 77%?
Yeah.
And females earn 86% more than non graduates.
Over a lifetime.
The additional earnings from this investment could easily be over $1,000,000.
$1,000,000?
Aren't you guys late for class?
Our biscuits take you to the street to find out what are the secrets of success?
Let's find out.
Education.
Education.
Continuing education, in any sense is important.
When we think of education, we think of maybe in school, school.
School.
Well, I'm actually still in school.
The more you know, and the more you know how to do, the more.
Possibilities you have.
Any opportunity to learn is really an opportunity to grow.
We repeat the question, please.
Why is it important to.
Further your education.
So that you can go to college.
And get an.
Important job?
And when there's so much out there.
There's always education and programs to be taking.
Just believe in lifelong learning.
Education is really just means to prepare for life.
Just try new.
Things, travel.
Finding out new things, or of course, the Internet.
Learn how to fly a plane.
You know, without my.
Education, I would not be able to follow this dream that I have.
Success.
That there really is no secret to success.
The only way towards success is getting an education.
I'm going to go out there for me and always I'm one of the co-founders of Almaz, is a group started in Gresham High School and Spanish Means Souls, and it's a group to kind of mentor other Latinas that go to Gresham High School for I joined EN as I was doing really right in school.
So I started doing drugs and that's when like the gang world kind of opened up to me.
But I got kicked out.
I got into more drugs and doing more games.
I didn't go to school for a whole year and now I'm graduating.
So I think that's a big step.
Miss Gomez approached us and said that she wanted to start a group for girls.
I met as a mentorship leadership group for Latino high school students.
We helped them make that successful transition from high school into college.
We do a lot of college presentations.
I'm the tour guide.
We just go in and see what it will be like to live on the campus and what it will be like to attend the classes that they have there.
We've also gone through the process of seeing what the requirements are to get into that college and what you can do to fill out scholarships where you can find them.
And I think we're going to do a workshop on FAFSA, really indication for Federal Student Aid.
That is a financial aid form that students can fill out when they're in high school and they send it in and the government mails them back, a list of scholarships that they're eligible for.
When we first started out as a group, we didn't have any money.
We didn't have any supplies.
We got $2,000 grant from Youth Center, and we also got a $5,000 scholarship last year.
All five seniors were the first in their families to go to college.
And this year for seniors, they're going to college will be the first in their families to go to college.
I'm very proud of my girls.
They're very strong young women, very determined.
Whatever goal they set their mind to, they reach.
I've done it this time.
My newest evil potion is sure to trick those kids, the perfect kids, for my secret evil plan.
I'll disguise myself like a business man.
Full bloom.
Hey, kids.
What are you doing out here on the sidewalk?
We're waiting for the school bus.
The school bus, you say?
Don't you think school's a little overrated?
No, of course not.
We learn important stuff in school.
Sure, sure.
You have to go to school.
But do you want to?
I can show you the way to have fun all day.
Why waste your time with school?
Hey, come on, kids, work with me here.
You know, actually, you're totally wrong.
The only way to really be successful.
In today's.
World is to further your education.
Besides, we're not supposed.
To talk to strangers.
And what's with the green face?
Pimples.
Kind of creepy.
Yeah.
Loser.
Take a hike.
Hey, what are you.
No snack knows his kids foiled.
My plans again.
I am just not good at this.
Which stuff?
In school, school, school and education after high school is very important.
Or maybe I need to go back.
To which school?
Emergency shelter.
Hey, what is that, kid?
Oh, it's a job application.
I'm now thinking I'm just going to skip college and get a full time job.
Oh, good idea.
Schools for fools.
Pardon me.
I'm just giving Junior here some career advice.
None of your business, really.
Like I'm saying, kid, you're going to get a leg up on your career.
You're going to bring in some dough and no more homework, huh?
Hold on, hold on.
You're thinking of skipping college?
Well, yeah, I was thinking about it.
Listen.
College gives you the education.
And experience to make good decisions that affect your entire future.
Don't you have a cloud that you can go and fluff somewhere?
Plus, it gives you the skills, training.
And discipline to.
Pursue your dream job.
When you put it like that.
You know, you really cramp my style.
Well, now we're here today with Elmer and his son, Pete.
And Pete apparently doesn't feel like he needs to be in school in a.
Right.
Pete?
Pete, Pete?
Dad.
What now?
Pete, let me ask you this.
Now, what would you do with all that free time if you had it?
Enjoy myself.
Be a kid while I can.
There is a saying in my neck of the woods, young man, that the lead bull in a herd, necessarily the oldest one.
In other words, people who make it to the top in life ain't necessarily there just because they've been around a long time.
Now, when you enter the workforce, you might find yourself working for people that they'd stay in school and they might even be younger than you.
They'll have a better job.
They might even be your boss.
Now, I'm not saying you can't enjoy your youth, but don't waste your adulthood to be.
What a revolting development this is.
That's where I'm furthering my education in right over there.
Where can you see it?
Right there.
Right there.
Oh, look, I didn't get to be a millionaire by sitting on the porch swing, watching the perch.
I'm saving over half of my money so that after I finish college, I won't have to pay huge loans and debt.
My name is Cornell Freeman.
This is a Jim Webb and this is my I am 18.
I'm a circus performer and I perform in the gym well.
It's mainly done in competitions, circus and ice shows.
I actually do the gym with a nice we are here at Circus Theme whose mission is to build self-esteem through Circus Circus you not only learn in circus lessons, you learn and lifelong lessons that help you wherever you go.
Now I'm performing a cruise ships and also doing different competitions.
I got the job on a cruise ship where I'm making enough to have fun, but most of my money I'm saving so that I can pay my way through college.
What I'm doing is very dangerous and I can get hurt tomorrow.
So I think it's very important that I have a college degree to fall back on.
Hey, biscuits.
Save for higher education.
Yeah.
So with the cruise job, it was two and a half month contract, but it started in August, the same time that I would be starting school.
Cornell has been working with us for four years, getting paid college's expenses.
In that time, he's been saving money, but he's also been learning about debt ratio.
College is expensive.
What I did was I deferred my means until January, and I'm going to start school at Illinois State University studying physical education.
So he understands he has to figure out other ways to pay for school colleges.
Because I.
Got to cover I have 60, I have.
College expense.
Okay.
So He gets a grant to pay based on need.
Seriously met his dollar for dollar.
So if I put 20,016, put $20 in and now I have $40 because he's an amazing kid, he applies for scholarship.
I have different scholarships from my state legislator and 16 money that I've been saving from the cruise ship.
And financially, he's got these way to pay for school and he understands once I graduate from college, I won't be up to my neck in debt.
So that's really important.
Save a little everyday for higher education, went to college and it doesn't hurt to have a college degree and work in the circus at all.
But I think it's very important to have a backup plan.
Who has opened doors for me?
Because I am able to make smart choices and circus team has also helped me make smart choices because I have a college degree that opens up more doors and more opportunities for me to become successful.
I cannot emphasize enough.
The importance.
Of school and continuing your education.
I learned my craft in school, television, school.
We used to put on a cooking show.
It's kind of a fun show.
Lots of cooking.
That's my costar, little Jeannie Crocker.
We used to call her.
Oh, check out those cool computers of higher education.
That's the key.
So best kids.
The truth.
Is.
I'm going to call it fun.
No way can get.
Thanks.
I got all the scholarships I could find and I got a small.
Student loan, and now I just have a job right off campuses and it's.
Oh.
Wow, that's amazing.
Oh, you mean you're going to the clown college?
Oh, how'd you know?
Really?
Yeah, I'm going to a performing arts college.
Will be majoring in clowning mimicry.
I've always wanted to be a clown since I was a kid, you know, so I could make people laugh.
Great.
Well, it sounds like you found a career that you love, and that's the true.
Key to success.
Good luck.
BANKS Well, remember, success is about more than just getting into the right school or having a job.
You love it.
It's oh yeah, education is a lifelong thing, even after you've made it.
I mean, I have to get a master's degree in clowning.
If you want to, but education is about more than just school.
It's training, travel, reading.
You got to keep your mind open to new ideas.
And the more you know, the more you grow.
The more you grow.
The more you know, the more you know, the more you know the more you grow or go.
Which is what I have to do right now.
Oh, where are you going?
Well, I'm off to pick my dorm mate out.
Thank you.
I don't wanna get stuck with a mime student.
Why black and white make up?
They don't talk.
Creepy.
So you guys later up.
Everybody knows the true secret to success is to never stop learning.
And it doesn't have to be college.
Hey, Big Sir.
Speaking of the need for higher learning, it's my assistant, Brian.
Oh, Katrina, bless you.
I didn't need no education.
And that's why you're my assistant, Bryan.
Oh, by the way.
What radical dreamer.
I have spent my entire life continuing my education.
It's the secret to success.
It's also the secret to finding babes.
There's, like, this hottie.
It wasn't so much a beautiful physique.
It was his well-educated brain.
It turned me on.
And if you want to be a babe magnet like me.
Stay in school.
But just get.
Out.
I want to go back to school.
Who needs school?
I didn't go to no school.
Ain't no dummy.
I'm a successful.
You're a success here on the street.
Yes, but I want to be engineer.
You got to go to school for that.
I want to.
I want to get paid more.
I want to.
Father, the two of you believe this guy?
Well, boss, you know, I've always wanted to do my father's business as an architect, and you got to go to school for that.
I want to learn how to cook so I can maybe open a restaurant.
What is this?
Sorry, boss.
I think we're all going back to school.
We'd have a better chance of success.
And I mean, he plans to.
The job is great now.
But yeah, we're just looking at it for our financial futures.
Boss, we catch you later.
All right?
Are you dating kids?
I got to do everything myself, and so I will.
Okay, boss, that's me.
You'll be driving, boss.
You will get the back door, boss.
You will come in.
You will hit the ball, huh?
Volpe, did somebody say hit the ball?
Yes.
Everybody knows.
If you want to be a really nice guy, stay in school.
It's the secret to success.
Not just my vote.
My name is Dominic Williams.
I've been playing the piano for seven years.
I used to play it because I loved it.
Then I realized when I created my business plan that I could use my talent to show the world and I can make money doing.
I performed at one or two performances, get about 50 to 100 hours.
I split the money that I earn in half so I can spend half of it and keep the other half.
And my savings, the cap.
I deposit $25 to $50 in my college savings plan.
For my mom and dad.
I may deposit $50 to about 85 and maybe even more.
The most important thing is to save for your college education.
The second thing is you want to make sure to.
Start early so that you can make sure to have enough money to cover all of your college expenses.
The last thing is.
To save every month because you don't want to just start the plan.
And forget about it, and you do want to make sure you have enough money to meet all of your goals.
Is very important to save for college because college is a costly now.
And when I was in college, I took out loans and after I graduated, they only give you six months time and you have to start repaying.
And so it took me ten years just to pay off $8,000.
It doesn't take long start a college savings account and you can start with as low as 25 to $50.
It only takes about 15 minutes to fill out application.
There are many 529 college savings plans available.
Sit down with your financial advisor.
And can help you to select the one that's best for you.
Yeah.
Hey, you guys got any spare change?
I think I got a little.
What is all this?
Well, I've been hearing how expensive colleges, so I decided to start saving now.
All right, well, this is a good start, but you're going to need a lot more than pocket change.
Well, I've got a $10 bill in there.
Okay, well, luckily, there are tons of saving options for people who are saving for college.
Like me.
Just like you.
Like.
Have you ever heard of a 529 plan?
Is that the highways that's opening?
No, no, no, no, no.
A 529 is a savings plan for people who want to start saving for college.
Now it's available in most states and it's tax free.
You see, there are two kinds of 529 plans.
The first is called prepaid tuition in savings.
Now, prepaid is cool because you can pay for college at today's rates instead of the rates that you'll be paying when you actually go to college.
And trust me, that will make a big difference.
Then there's a 529 savings plan where you invest money over time and your earnings are based on the market performance of things like mutual funds and it's also tax free.
You can also open up a savings account and then open up a CD which has a higher interest rate than a regular savings.
And since you can't touch that money for a long time, it's perfect for saving for college.
All right.
So the 529 plan sounds a lot safer than a jar.
So I'm going to take this money and go get paid.
These are my babies.
But seriously, folks, take it from Penny when it comes to saving for college.
Every penny.
Hi.
My name is Latrell Petersen.
I'm 18 years old and I have won three college.
Scholarships.
Before I started.
My scholarship says I went online and I found it for scholarships.
And then when the school year started, I met my post-secondary coach who helped and guided me.
When it came to finding the right scholarships that fit me.
The trail would stay, you know, after school with me at least four days out of the week.
And he just really determined.
Out of the 12 scholarships I applied for, I received three one scholarship that really stands out is the Gates Millennium Scholarship, because it pays for everything depending on your major.
And over 13,900 applicants apply out of that.
Only 1000 received the scholarship.
Latrell will have the opportunity to study abroad at no cost if he needs a laptop, if he needs transportation at home.
I mean, my God, he even if he sneezed, they're going to provide the tissue.
Oh, whoa.
Excuse me.
Growing up in a neighborhood was for white under.
But, yeah, drug dealers, you know, perverse days and just a lot of shooting and violence growing up is kind of tough, you know, to keep, you know, focus and stay focused.
The reason I received three scholarships was because I worked hard and I'm not just academically smart, but I also participated in extracurricular activities as well as being involved in my community and also participated in leadership conferences.
There are three main factors every student should consider before they start applying for college.
What do they want to study?
Where do you want to go for college?
And how will you and your family pay for college students can research scholarship opportunities at scholarship dot com fast web as well as Choose Your Future dot org and there are many many more high basket.
I got three scholarships and you can do it too.
Now that's a bit risky.
You know, pennies is great, but I just found an even better way to pay for schools, and that's with scholarships.
But I thought those are just for valedictorians and star football players.
So did I.
But there were so many of them out there.
Many of them don't even get used in just about any field of study you can imagine.
Science, English, history.
Technology, culinary music.
Art.
Many schools give scholarships for specific fields of study.
Keep going.
There are also a lot of private that give scholarships like churches, unions and charitable organizations.
Let me see.
Oh, you're right.
The government, so many programs, grants and scholarships, the money is out there.
Well, I don't know.
I mean, could I check my online profile first?
Oh, I have three new friend requests.
And as you can see on my resume, I have geared myself towards my community and my own interests.
And I'd also really like to thank you all for giving me the wonderful opportunity to compete for such a prestigious scholarship.
Scholarship?
What if a scholarship you're after?
Maybe I.
Heard your resumé is very impressive.
Or say we open up to now.
You and I are gone.
Where do you see yourself being in?
Tell me.
Hopefully I'll be out of college and grad school and maybe I'll be starting a family of my own.
A pirate family.
Come again.
You know, CNN is 70 Roberts Village in.
Yeah, yeah, sure.
Definitely.
Here's a less formal question.
Sort of a personality test cutlass or flintlock?
Oh, I don't use weapons.
Except for my flintlock pistol.
With a cutlass attached to it.
I.
So does.
This mean I get the scholarship.
Last year?
Ha ha ha ha ha ha.
Check it out.
A college degree.
Congratulations.
Thank you.
This is great.
Because of the many things we've talked about.
But just remember that there are other ways to learn outside of a traditional college education.
And you can still have a great career.
You know?
You're right.
Yeah.
For example, there are specialized schools that you can attend that train pilots, flight attendants and flight mechanics.
And then there's culinary institutes.
College.
What.
That's cooking schools to you, college boy.
Mhm.
That looks tasty.
A good chef is always in demand and so is a good restaurant manager.
There are schools for that too, but it's not all about schools.
You can also be an apprentice to a master craftsman.
You'll learn how to work with fine wood, precious metals and glass.
And speaking of watching things, you can also get specialized training in things you watch, like animation, web design, even videography, whatever your passion, there's more than one way to achieve your dream.
So get going now.
Get going.
I said get going.
You guys, climb.
On, boy, we really lit a fire under them, huh?
Fire path.
Like it.
And.
No, no.
Light.
A fire under your career.
Go back to school.
I have always wanted to be a firefighter, ever since I was about ten years old.
Following the EMT is kind of a pretty now and looking to get my foot in the door with the firefighter from the crash we are in EMT program is incredibly exciting and every day there's new things we're learning hands on the people that are learning side by side.
It's like a family atmosphere.
Everybody who's successful has had help along the way.
There's online programs, there's night classes.
I go to school from 6 to 10.
You know, I working 6 a.m. to three, coach football from 3 to 6, you know, school from 6 to 10.
And it's tough, but it's satisfying.
And there's so many financial aid programs and grants and loans that you can get.
And if you have the drive in this educational system, you can definitely make it.
I'm a new.
Student.
My name is Cassandra Regner.
I'm 26 years old and I help people find you.
Financial aid for school students who come to a technical college, go into a two year degree and can go directly into their career path and start working.
You know, going to the school is so important for me because just the competition out there so stiff nowadays that I feel like if I don't do this for myself now and do it as soon as possible, then I'm just not really gonna have a good shot at it.
By being here, I'm putting myself one step ahead of the game.
Firefighting is the ultimate dream, and this is just one big stepping stone.
Just get me that much closer.
Success isn't necessarily defined by my bank account or my income, or how much money I make.
Being happy and being comfortable and getting a sense of self accomplishment is truly what is successful.
When we.
Find a student who has found their niche.
In life, who has discovered what they want to.
Do, it's like a glow.
They know that they have a path, a future.
It's it's.
Wonderful.
Hey, don't be a dummy in school.
Today's lecture is about how important it is to stay in school.
You kids are lucky because, as you can see, I know how to make learning fun.
Time for another Misconceptions quiz.
Furthering your education will help build up your maximum value for getting a job the help you get higher pay in your future jobs.
Enjoy old vending machine food in the school's cafeteria.
Have a better choice of jobs after you graduate.
If you answered C well you just need to go back to school.
We've talked a lot about how to pay for school, but I think it's time to talk about why.
Why go further in?
Your education.
After all, some people think it's smarter to jump into the workforce after high school and start earning money right away.
The thing is, college graduates, for example, make more money.
Statistically, at least 50% more than people who decided not to go.
But it's not just money.
A higher education shapes your communication skills.
It expands your knowledge base, gets you organized, and you learn to prioritize.
The more you learn, the more your self-confidence grows.
And as you stick with it, career choices begin to open up.
That would be impossible.
An education.
You'll get more respect, and you'll respect yourself for the achievements you've made.
It's a whole different way of seeing the world.
And chances are when you go to college, you'll actually meet people from.
Over the world.
Grow up, move out, get to college and get a leg up on life.
Makes sense.
It all adds up.
Works for me.
See you on campus.
What is so.
Funny?
Sorry.
Water of hope will develop with this is it.
Well, Joe, this episode of His Kids is just about over now.
I mean, we're on a TV show.
You remember how earlier in the show we talked about how each year of education going to add to your income?
Yes, sir.
And I've decided to work much harder in school now.
That's excellent, Joe.
But getting back to basics, kids, are you saying I'm an actor on TV?
Then you notice the cameras and all the lights we had set up here in the drugstore.
I guess I really could use that education.
Well, Joe, you know what to do next.
Yeah, get an agent.
All right, so now you've heard some of our stories, and we want to hear some of yours, maybe you or a friend who started your own business thought up some ideas to help a community.
Yeah, we want to hear about those.
So go to biscuits dot com and share the good news.
Who knows?
Maybe you'll end up right here on the show.
Well, not exactly right here, but yeah, on the show.
How about right here?
No, not really.
Right here.
No, not there.
Right here.
