Santa Anna returns from exile to unite Mexico against the U.S. invasion. Santa Anna's troops first meet Zachary Taylor's army at Buena Vista. Winfield Scott lands 10,000 U.S. soldiers on the beach at Veracruz. Scott and Santa Anna meet at Cerro Gordo in a battle that turns into a rout of the Mexican army. Defeated but unbowed, Santa Anna falls back to Mexico City to defend the capital.
