Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship- It is surely my pleasure to be here tonight and I'm going to be singing my story.
I've been writing songs since I was 13 and neighbors gave me my first guitar.
And once I taught myself how to play it and started singing some of the songs that were popular in the day by Judy Collins and Joni Mitchell and Peter Paul and Mary, then I kind of though, well, I want to have some of my own songs.
So I started writing my own songs back then and they were pretty daggone corny, I want to tell you.
But anyway, I've always enjoyed it.
It's another way of, it's a different canvas to work with.
And I've written a lot of songs over my life and I've written a lot of them about the Eastern Shore and the people here and the history here and the wildlife and nature, everything that makes the shore so special.
And so a lot of people know my music because it centers around the Eastern Shore.
And I've chose to do a song tonight based on our theme, Platonic Love, that is not a shore song.
It has nothing to do really about the shore.
In fact, it's son of a silly song, but it has some meaning to it.
And it is based on some experiences I've had in life and I bet you've probably had them too, where you have really dear friends that might be of the opposite sex and you just are friends for your whole life.
And then somebody new comes into their life and so all of a sudden it's not just your friend.
And sometimes their significant other is like, "Well, who is this?"
And so I had some experiences with that.
And so I ended up writing this song.
It's called Girlfriends Are the Best.
And I actually sang this song for the first time to my forever best friend who's here tonight, Sharon.
So anyway, here's Girlfriends Are the Best.
Well, you can't have a married man friend if you're a single girl.
Some laws of nature can't be broke.
It's the wisdom of the world.
You'll set through wives of swarming like a hornets from a nest.
So if you're single, take my word, girlfriends are the best, are the best.
Well, he came to my house last evening looking for a friend.
I've known him since my childhood, so I let him in.
When my phone had started ringing, his wife was on the line.
She yelled, "Keep your hands off my man.
He's drank way too much wine.
You can't have a married man friend if you're single girl.
Some laws of nature can't be broke.
It's the wisdom of the world.
Though set through wives are swarming like a hornets from a nest.
So if you're single, take my word.
Girlfriends are the best, are the best."
Well, I was minding my own business when he asked me for a dance.
Way over in the corner his wife sat in a trance.
Fire was shooting from her eyes and smoke rubs from her ears.
She yelled, keep your hands off my man.
He's drank too many beers.
You can't have a married man friend if you're single girl.
Some laws of nature can't be broke.
It's the wisdom of the world.
Your set through wives are swarming like a horn.
It's from a nest.
So if you're single take my word, girlfriends are the best, are the best.
I was sitting at the opera when a most distinguished man squeezed by me looking for his seat, bent and kissed my hand.
But I thought I heard a hissing as her mink coat caught my eye.
She said, "Keep your hands off my man.
His smokes have made him high.
You can't have a married man friend if you're a single girl.
Some love to nature can't be broke.
It's the wisdom of the world.
You set through wives are swarming like a horn.
It's from a nest.
So if you're single take my word, girlfriends are the best, are the best, are the best.
Girlfriends are the best.
Thank you.
Thank you very much.
Thank you.
