Toxic Algae and the Climate Conundrum
Clip: Season 1 Episode 13 | 9m 41sVideo has Closed Captions
Climate change may affect the growth of Cyanobacteria, or blue-green algae, in Lake Erie.
Every summer, western Lake Erie is overrun by blue-green algae. Also known by the acronym “HABS” — for harmful algal blooms — these growths contaminated Toledo’s drinking water in 2014. Since then, a web of monitoring sensors have been deployed as sentinels for water quality and public health. But in the coming years, climate change looks likely to complicate the situation.
