Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipMy name is Shawn Moon and I'm a truck driver.
I get my direction for the day, which is typically a a list of what my deliveries will be.
And then I come out on the dock and I find that freight for each of my deliveries loaded into the trailer that I'm going to use for that day to make my deliveries.
Once everything gets loaded, then I go in.
I grab my paperwork.
I find the truck to drive that day, check everything in the truck, make sure everything is safe and roadworthy.
I go hook up to my trailer and then start my day out on the road.
Typically when you think of truck driving, the main thing you think of is over the road.
Truck drivers, they're gone for weeks, possibly months at a time in different states all across the country.
But there's local truck drivers that are home every day, some that are doing pickups and deliveries just locally work in typical hours.
And.
It's not all the same.
This is the tractor air brake and this is the trailer air brake.
So, I mean, each time you stop at the for both of those, you don't want to go and push both those in four ways.
Dump the suspension.
That's for one.
You're going to drop your trailer and unhook from it.
This is just for lane guidance.
Any time you're going out of the lane, get off buzz real loud and annoyingly.
But it's necessary if you were to buy your own tractor trailer truck and go basically work for yourself or work for another company for driving down truck.
There's a lot of buttons on those.
I don't I couldn't even tell you what all they are.
But there are they look pretty cool.
All sorts of buttons all over the dashboard for me.
I like to keep it simple.
To me, the strengths that are important for this job is problem solving.
You're always faced with something and you've got to think it out.
And how to do it safely was very important and always got to be a word.
Always.
I know I'm going straight through this stop sign here, through this intersection, and I always see it.
Somebody pouring over the side.
I haven't seen anybody get out of the truck, but something always got to be for.
I go through and I make all my deliveries, get to all the customers, and I come back, bring back whatever I picked up.
I'll get back on the dock, I'll unload my trailer.
So we're about ready for a night shift to start.
And then I can I can head out and do it all again tomorrow.
But some of the benefits make a decent amount of money.
I just bought a brand new vehicle.
I put $20,000 down on it.
You have the potential to make six figures if you had like the potential to make even more and more is always , always there.
In my spare time, I like to play sports.
Golfing, golf clubs aren't cheap, and this job affords me the ability to buy new golf clubs almost, almost every year.
I'm buying something new golf clubs.
Today I delivered cleaning supplies and I delivered parts to motor sports.
And those are all things that the customer is waiting on to get on the shelves and, you know, and and to keep their place clean.
It's important things to deliver.
It gives me a sense of accomplishment every day.
And, you know, I can go home and feel good that I did something to help other people.
