Forecasters use 27 pieces of data to predict a hurricane's dangerous storm surge.
For North Carolinians, hurricanes are a way of life. Frequently, the rapid and unexpected flooding from storm surge causes the most costly damage. Storm surge is not a giant wave like a tsunami, but it is the gradual piling up of water along the coast. Researchers use 27 pieces of data in a new computer model to predict the area most likely to experience flooding.
