IPB Presents Cyclone Russell.
It's the Iowa State Cyclones versus the Iowa Hawkeyes at the Hilton Coliseum in Ames, Iowa.
Tonight, the scene of an intra state rivalry between the two premier powers and collegiate wrestling.
Today, the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Iowa State Cyclones.
Good evening everybody Im Doug Brown and Im Dave Hardy, Good evening, everybody.
I'm Doug Brown.
And I'm Dave Hearty, and welcome to the fifth season of IPB.
And Cyclone wrestling coverage.
This year we have more events than ever.
We have 12 events, 12 matches, including some from Iowa and you and I and from Drake.
from Iowa and UNI and from Drake.
Were going to We're going to present them on Monday and Thursday nights beginning at 1030 for the next five weeks.
So every Monday and Thursday for the next five weeks, you can tune in and see cyclone wrestling and this great series and well have the schedule for you later.
and we'll have the schedule for you later.
But right now, let's talk about every year the big one, David, or without question and I indicated earlier, it's just nice to be able to have them twice each year because they're the super powers.
And it's just great to see two great teams like this go at it.
And without question number one and three rankings in the country respectively.
I want our state is just great.
Well, Iowa unquestionably is number one because they have just rolled over everybody.
They've won three straight national championships going for a fourth.
They have won the Midland seven years in a row.
They are just a marvelous team.
But Iowa State is undefeated also, David.
That's right.
500 The Hawks are 9010 And when you said seven Midland, that's unprecedented.
You know, that's just phenomenal in the Cyclones third last year in the NCAA and of course they've won their share of the national championships over the past 12 years.
Likewise, we want to give you a look at the coaches here, because these are two of the most famous coaches in wrestling.
Certainly Dan, Harold Nichols, who was Dan Gable as coach, has been around long enough to be considered as a success.
The dean of coaches, 28 years in the day, 28 years at Iowa State, 32 total in his career.
And that's a lot of coaching and his prized pupil was the coach now of the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Every year we say this and Gable, the Olympic champion in 72.
That's correct.
And of course, the greatest amateur wrestler that I think all of us have seen for some time, if not the best.
And what can you say that his coaching has produced about the same as he had with the competitor?
Well, now let's take a look at some of the boys you're going to see on the map tonight.
Iowa.
Can you believe this?
They won the national championship last year and they get two boys back.
They didn't have that.
Yes, Mike, Deanna and Scott Tristen got because, you know, they were third and second respectively in 1978 and 79, Richard, in 1980.
And here is perhaps the outstanding wrestler in Iowa's history for the last five or six years, Randy Lewis.
Oh, without question.
But look at their record there itself.
Second first anniversary, respectively.
NCAA tournament in high school, 93 matches, 85 of them by fall.
That's phenomenal.
You know, he has a chance to be on a national championship team four years in a row.
And another great one is a man who won the French championship last year as a freshman.
Oh, yes.
And it's always so super when you see a freshman.
He's got a lot to look forward to.
And of course, he's got a lot to defend likewise.
But he's a good one and a real pinner that's at back.
And of course Iowa State has some great which to me said they had seven All-Americans returning.
Five of them will be in the lineup tonight and we'll give you a look at three of them right now in one nice picture.
This is because he Gibbons Brown.
Yes.
And all of them very tough and it all ranks two big eight national place winners.
These are the young men in the lower weights.
Now you're going to see Perry Hubbell, who is presently who is currently ranked number one in the country at £167.
Yes, of course, a West Des Moines, Iowa, native and a sophomore now having been redshirted his freshman year.
But what can you see?
We haven't already said about him.
He's a super wrestler, a good technician.
We talked about it.
Bennett here is his opponent for tonight, Iowa State's outstanding All-America.
Yes, David Allen, Grand Rapids, Minnesota, and another good technician.
He's looking for some revenge, of course.
So there you have some of the people who are going to be in this state tonight.
It's an unbelievable group of young men.
And what a great way to start off APB on Cyclone Wrestling series, the first of 12 big matches.
It's Iowa and Iowa State, the big one.
We'll be back with tonight's sta back with tonight's dual meet between Iowa and Iowa State.
Now let's go down to that side with PA announcer Rod Williamson for tonight's starting lineups.
Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Hilton Coliseum.
And tonight's wrestling meet between the University of Iowa Hawkeyes and the Iowa State University.
Cyclones and the Hawkeyes enter the door with a record of nine wins.
No losses, and are coached by Dan Gable and Jay Robison.
Iowa State enters with a record of five wins, no losses, and is coached by Dr. Harold Nichols, Glass Anderson and Willie Gadson.
Here are the match ups at £118 for Iowa, our freshman from Cedar Rapids, a record of 16 wins, three losses.
Berry Davis for Iowa State senior from Huntington, New York, a record of 12 and three.
Mike Kozy, two time all-American at £126 for Iowa.
A sophomore from Iowa City, a record of 11 wins two losses.
Tim Riley for Iowa State, sophomore from North Chicago, Illinois, a record of 11.
And for Adley Parker at £134 for the Hawkeyes, a senior from Rapid City, South Dakota, a record of 15 zero and one.
Randy Lewis for the Cyclones, a junior from Ames, a record of 15 and three.
Jim Gibbons.
That's going to be a great match tonight.
I think.
£142 for Iowa Junior, I'm sure.
Weevil Iowa record of 17 and zero.
Lenny Zaleski and for Iowa State, a senior from Marion, a record of nine.
I know Dave Brown, two undefeated All-Americans at 154 Iowa, a senior from Joliet, Illinois, with a record of 15 and three.
Scott Trevino, wrestling for Iowa State, sophomore from Erie, Pennsylvania, a record of 15 and two.
Nate Carr, £158 for Iowa.
A freshman from Louisville with a record of nine wins, one loss Jim Zaleski for the Cyclones, a sophomore from Franklin Park, Illinois.
A record of foreign to Jim Farina, both having been two time state champions in high school, £167 for Iowa.
A senior from Bay Village, Ohio, a record of 16 and one Mike Deanna for Iowa State, a sophomore from Urbandale, a record of ten and zero.
Perry Hummel And that's another barn burner at £177 for the Hawkeyes, a sophomore from Port Jervis, New York, a record of 16 and one at Bannock for Iowa State.
A senior from Grand Rapids, Minnesota, with a record of ten wins, no losses.
Dave Allen That's going to be another great match.
They're going to stare each other down at £190 for Iowa.
A sophomore from Davenport, a record of 14 three and one beat Bush for Iowa State, a senior from Ann Arbor, Michigan, a record of 15 and three.
John, she the heavyweights for Iowa, a sophomore from Port Jervis, New York, a record of seven and two.
Lou Banach for Iowa State, a senior from Lukas, a record of six and eight.
Dave Osunbor.
And those are the lineups.
We have some terrific matches here.
There's no doubt, Dave, that Iowa is the favorite here because of their record.
And there's John Raber, by the way.
He's a first time we've seen him referee in Iowa, Iowa State match.
He has the captains, Dave Allen and Randy Lewis out there.
And we'll see if we can pick up what he has to say.
It has a wireless mike.
Hope to pick up much of what he has to say tonight as the matches go on.
I started to say that certainly Iowa has to be a favorite.
Oh, I think you're absolutely right.
Coming off the national championship last year, the way they had run third.
But the Hawks got the choice on the on the flip out there.
I don't know what they selected.
Now, you see Iowa has taken over the lead in the series, 12 wins, 11 losses, two draws.
This has all happened really since the Gable era Hawkeyes and cyclones both undefeated.
Here we go, £118 and always it's always a big match.
This first one, the cozy for Iowa State in the red against Barry Davis, a freshman from Cedar Rapids Prairie.
Last year.
We saw him in a state tournament in Iowa.
That's right.
Barry Davis, the three time state champion, Cedar Rapids, very high school and a good one, pushing each other a good deal because he is known to be strong.
But it goes Davis on him.
And you can see because they tried to horse him with an underhook to keep him off.
Al Davis went in there on a double leg and ended up with that single.
He still got it, but there's no point scored.
They're still scrimmaging for the takedown.
He used the trip off of it and gets his three point takedown.
And that's two oh.
Looks like that's the one for this game going up there That there was no control him and there was a definite loss of control on the part of Davis ought to do one more favor of Davis at this time in the neutral position.
They're back on their feet.
Davis, who isn't aggressive, you actually aren't going to wrestle for Dan Gable and not be aggressive.
Oh, very true.
But that's true of both of these squads, though, Doug.
They're always very aggressive, particularly when you can carry both of them with the teams from around the country.
But Kozy has finished in the top eight of the Nationals twice, once for the University of Florida.
And then after Florida's program dropped, he came to Iowa State seventh last year.
We have 50 seconds left.
In the first period, a two minute period.
You're awfully close to the edge of the matter.
Now.
Davis is working on the upper body, but there because he dropped in on the leg more or less of a kind of a fireman's carry carry type combination.
Look let's go to China.
Could make anything of it.
We have 39 seconds left.
It's Davis in the black by one.
There's a shot.
Oh, he made a mistake.
Yes, he did.
He went the wrong way.
It's 3 to 2 now in favor of the closer.
Davis made a nice move.
He had good position, good penetrating penetration, but it was an excellent counter maneuver on behalf of the coaching for the two.
That's us.
You see the hand on the back of the head there, and I will look in Dan Gable hand on the back of the head by referee John Ray.
So that was a potentially dangerous.
Let's go with the bottom wrestler, in this case, a defensive wrestler of that record, 95% was a scratch man.
The defensive bottom wrestler was supporting the entire weight of the offensive wrestler.
That was the reason for the potentially dangerous maneuver.
We're in the last 10 seconds, you see, because he trying to get up.
He was up trying to get up out of that, put the legs in.
He'd like to slip those legs in right this period out here if he can.
He's got a second or two left.
So remember, the referee has a wireless fight That's the end of the first period.
And Sarkozy leading 3 to 2 takedown position, one down.
The referee has a microphone and you'll be hearing it from time to time tonight.
We'll try to tune him in.
Whatever we can.
Well, why do it so at?
Because he did start up leading 3 to 2 goes.
He comes in pretty tight.
He's up for the highlights of football, his legs in it.
He got the near leg in on him.
He's riding up there high on the on the thigh, on the hip, so to speak, and controlling the lower part of the body.
That takes a lot of the initial moves away from the bottom wrestler in this case, Davis Cross-Body ride.
And he's trying to break down the upper part of here.
He's got a lot of pressure back there.
He gets that near leg to stuck the leg.
And as soon as Davis stood up, he likes to wrestle from behind like that.
He's got to slip around in the Irish grips.
Otherwise, he almost was in a position where he might have lost it.
Right there, this doctor, Harold Nichols, and his record come on down.
33 years of coaching.
That's 425 wins.
Come on down, Red.
I want whistle because he who is on top picked up 44 seconds of riding time there he leads 3 to 2.
He comes up notice how he comes up in there pretty high.
He gets a lot of pressure in the upper part of the body there going to get we get in there pretty deep this time.
He'd like to he'd like to get him flattened out if he can.
He's working high up there on the forearm.
Would like to work a half Nelson off out if he can, one side or the other.
Well, you know, a nearfall in any of these tight matches really makes such a big difference.
And because he, of course, would like Davis would put some distance between himself and his opponent, he's in trouble a little bit now.
Now they pull him back on top of him.
He I'm sure he knows what he's doing, that he's handling himself.
Oh, Davis stepped across and got out 1.00.
Mosley countered well off of that maneuver, but he brought him back on top of him and didn't have a good base.
That's what we lost.
The one out of.
It was fortunate only to lose one because he picked up a little riding time.
That's a potential point if he can keep it.
But the scoreboard has it three three.
Each man has a takedown and an escape.
Come on back.
We're back to the center with a minute.
13 left in the second period of an all important opening match of Iowa.
Iowa State Davis is working on the upper body move right now, but I wouldn't be surprised he'll drop off that, come down into a single or a double shot there because he's tough on that.
That double single shot from out front.
They do that man is made a movie set because you're trying to get inside the arms.
If he can get right on the edge of the Madagascar, half of that under half, 44 seconds left hook, a body lock up there by paparazzi.
And as both of them are attempting, some upper body moves in there.
But the horse in each other.
Oh, I don't think that the coaches of Iowa State would like for you to get caught that underhook in there.
And that's what's happening because you pretty easily could get a body through a lot of that, But not only get a two pointer against you, you might end up with a five pointer against you have been to the ball good counter by for closing down the counter that single leg so well nice fade on his face but the pressure force going on in him around the corner so now he leads 5 to 3.
We have about 15 seconds left in the second period that he'd like to finish on top of this score.
That looks like he's going to go from there now.
It's going to be a stalemate.
It's potentially dangerous.
It we're going to look again.
There comes your countermove here.
Now notice how he comes across blocked that ball on steps across nobody control stick that leg in keep him from coming back around behind on a switch move There's his two point takedown the counter move back to action again live action at the end of a second period because he now has 2 minutes and 27 seconds of writing time, leading 5 to 3, and Davis has 3 seconds of writing time.
He had none in that second period for all practical purposes right now.
Then we got a63 score.
Those are the way they finished in the NCAA ways over the last six years.
I look at Iowa's record and three in a row because he got out to go 6 to 3.
He leads by three with a little riding time, potential point.
And Mr. Davis Berry, the young freshman from Cedar Rapids Prairie, is going to have to get going.
I think you'll see both boys doing a lot of offensive wrestling here pretty quick because either the one I'm going to sit back on their laurels, so to speak.
Davis got it on a double leg, but the coaches countered well tonight real well.
Every time he's gotten in or he's counted real well, except maybe that first time I saw Davis with a head in arm control at the top.
And there's that underarm hook stuff you see isn't calling into it yet, but a lot of body throws come off of that under arm hook stuff.
And those are big points.
Those are the NCAA finishes from the previous 20 years.
I see Iowa finished third one year before 1974, but the days since Dan Gable has come all the way to Hawkeye.
Four teams have been wonderful.
Now there's a nice double shot on behalf of the coaches.
No points scored yet.
They're still scrimmaging for the takedown.
Davis is trying to counter through the backdoor rear crotch maneuver.
It looks like it could be a stalemate if something doesn't happen with that gap, that means that neither man can improve his position.
There's a minute 51 left in the match because he leads 6 to 3, another double shot going into a single for Davis, but because he counters real well, they're still scrimmaging for the big down.
No point scored yet.
He tries to force him over that bar And I'll tell you, because he got on his back there for a second and he's got to hold on in there back to square one again.
And they're still strong.
I think maybe the coaches are.
I'm not sure some of them may have thought maybe they had some control there off of a kind of a ground maneuver, but there wasn't any control there at all.
They were still going to do for the takedown.
Now, there is two point Davis.
He intentionally released him, but I don't know if he gave 1625 now because he is out of seven five, but because he has lots of riding time has a potential point.
We have only one minute left in the meet.
We might mention there there that Davis gave an intentional release earlier, but he didn't allow enough reaction time for the one point.
So he still maintain control.
And because you then did get later the one point escape.
Oh, we have a problem here, Mike because he seems to be in pain and we don't know what's wrong.
And I think he might have gotten ahead of an elbow maybe or down to the mat.
I'm not sure it is 7 to 5.
And Barry Davis, another talented freshman for Iowa, needs a takedown and more.
Yes, there's a considerable amount of difference here in writing.
Time to 22 minutes, 27 seconds for Pagosa in 19 seconds for David.
So because he has the total amount of writing time, all he needs is a one minute net writing time over his opponent more than his opponent.
What he has, of course, little over 2 minutes.
The score at the end of the first period was 3 to 2 because he got a takedown of escape and had a takedown.
He traded two points for one in the second period was leading 5 to 3.
He got it up to 6 to 3 before Davis made the last takedown.
You know what the score is?
Yeah, Yeah, but it's seven five, you hear?
That's Harold Nichols talking.
You're hearing him on the referee's bike.
So what if I told.
Right, because he maybe got bumped in the head?
It's hard to tell if he.
Well, I'm sure he did it.
It was probably.
I'm one of that.
I'm one of those loser that he got to hit that a little bit, maybe against a knee or going against the mat to get.
Okay, let's go.
I think he's okay.
Maybe a little fuzzy, but I think he's pretty good shape.
Well, he has one minute left to try to maintain a two point lead and Barry Davis is going to come right at him.
You betcha.
And I think both of them have got to have offense here.
You don't want to sit back and protect the lead at this point.
There it was.
There's almost got himself in trouble now.
Almost got himself in trouble.
No point scored yet.
Davis giving him the double before of because he got it wrong.
He got to he all black boy he's getting back boy he's got the three pointer there and I'm sure that was a 5.0 a real good counter move.
He had a three point near ball and that makes him throw for five in favor of the closing with only 90 seconds left, he can stay in there.
You see.
He could end up with a 13 five that gives him an eight point margin for a major decision.
Oh, yeah, that's a four point win.
Four out of eight.
If he can handle it and you can bet that he's going to hang on with everything he's got.
And there it is.
It's over with right in time.
It's because.
830 Davis Miles.
It's a major decision for Iowa State.
The Cyclones, the part about the oh well that gets it all for Iowa State that's a good match up with some good wrestling on the path for both wrestlers out there.
Yes, there was a lot of offensive wrestling, very little falling laying around.
They were both very offensive.
That's what you like to see.
They had to have it.
Iowa State definitely needed an opening win.
And here is a first timer for Iowa State and his first big cyclone, Hawkeye.
Nate Adley Parker, who was older brother, wrestled for Iowa State.
His name is Bill Parker, an all-American, and Tim Riley, a sophomore from Iowa City.
It was 1197 last year.
He was a two time state champion.
City High is his opponent for the Hawkeyes, not the two best known wrestlers on these two teams.
But this match is just as important as all the rest of it.
You better believe it.
And these boys both have good credentials behind them, without question.
As you've already indicated, this will be a good match.
Riley in the black for Iowa now, Parker in the red for Iowa State.
Having watched the young Riley boy in high school tournaments, he's always been a very aggressive young man and always has been very tough at the high school ranks.
I'm sure he's going to carry that right into the collegiate ranks.
This year to his boys or wrestling before a big crowd.
This is something a 14,000 seat auditorium that I don't see many empty seats at all.
I can't read Red head black in under looking at the situation where it's a stalling call on on Parker he was under hooking, stalling, holding back up, penetrating, not gaining any position to become the offensive wrestler, so to speak.
So the stalling warning was given at 40 seconds left in the first period.
Remember, the first period is always 2 minutes long and these dual meets the second two periods are 3 minutes long each.
We might mention now that Parker has been one for stalling.
The next time he's called it it's a match point penalty point.
I remember his brother was an upper body wrestler, as I recall.
A lot of duck under tight maneuvers.
Likewise, he was quick that he got real good position.
Move around behind real well.
But one of the things about being an upper body type wrestler is that you tend to get called for stalling more when you're trying to set it up.
And I've gotten to a lot of upper body moves in the last four or five years, and that comes from international freestyle wrestling.
Do you get your choice?
Iowa State.
Iowa State Wes Anderson, assistant coach twice, NCAA champion.
Come on down and Parker will go down.
Okay.
Come on down.
BLOCK Really goes off.
No scores.
Go, go, go.
Well, they jammed in on that attempt at stand up.
Pretty tough there and put Parker right back down as he did.
He has that waist bar arm and there are two on one now got the two on one forearm bar.
Oh he's jamming into the upper part of the body two to keep him from coming up into that stand up And of course he's got that near Lake scissored out so that he can't get that stand up moving.
But Parker comes up but looks like to go back to the middle of the mountain sometimes, even with the referee microphone, it's going to be hard to hear the whistle.
It's hard for everybody to hear the whistle.
Come on down with the belly right away.
He's got to get moving on that whistle.
Pick that near ankle up top the that first move.
This time, Parker manages to stand up and get it get out.
It's London, I think.
Parker.
Oh, it's a little low.
I'm thrown.
I'm shocked when Parker One in four, kind of a double, but was well countered by Riley, and he picked up the two on the arm throw have an arm and body combination go head shook to wish him the edge of the pad again.
I got a push drop.
Well, the yellow area is the wrestling surface and the red is out of bounds.
A lot of the supporting parts of both wrestlers stay in bounds and there's significant action.
Wrestling will continue there.
The official sees that not much is going on out there.
He might blow the whistle, bring him back, but generally it'll take one of the if that's what's going out to bring about a miraculous center.
He had 49 seconds remaining in the second period, £126.
There is Dan Gable, of course, the Iowa coach.
That's good.
Come on down.
Let's go shaking his head a little bit.
Well, he's already built up riding time.
He's got a minute.
7 seconds.
And he put it to Parker again, right on the whistle that put right back on his shoulders.
So it's it's very imperative that the offensive top wrestler in this case gets on that whistle jams, that initial move.
And any time you take that initial move away, you've got a lot of that as to stand up and state on behalf of Parker for the one we now got to do to score a takedown for Raleigh.
Two escapes for Parker, right?
He missed that shot.
Looked like a high crotch maneuver.
I got him.
Parker's got to get some offense going on his feet.
All Riley's doing most of them when they're up on his feet.
And the fact that he's been called once before for stalling Parker, that is on a warning could easily get nailed if he doesn't start penetrating.
I'm not really sure, Just looking at him, what he's trying to set up here, That's pretty difficult at this time.
I'm sure he's had a bad news on the upper part of the upper body type bones right now, but you've got to penetrate and shoot a single double or something.
Right now.
Dekker just looks like kind of.
Yeah.
Still made it push off diamonds.
But now you saw Riley go in for that high crotch and then come back around behind, and he ends up in the two, not have a little duck under a combination off of that, too.
Did a nice job of it.
He he didn't get the high cross.
He just kept on going.
Noticed he did a nice job once he got around into the standing position behind too.
He wasn't in a real big hurry to put him down and loses maneuver, took his time, tipped him, put a moment, got his to Tim Riley of Iowa City Tech.
Man, all the top players got more at Riley.
So they've been warned.
What's next time At some point either way, that's the next man up, Randy Lewis.
Come on down with his winning off match off that small.
We have only about 5 seconds left In the second period.
I don't know how they're going to end this period just like that.
So it's 4 to 2.
That's it for you, Parker has not.
He hasn't been on top yet.
Riley, a minute.
58 seconds.
Yeah.
Okay.
Yeah.
What do you guys read?
Was in a starting position, and then a referee whose type of referee was talking to the official scorer, third grade Harold Nichols, going back to the bench.
He'd like to see a little bit more action.
Come on down.
126 pounder here.
Come on down.
Oh, Riley.
Going down with a four to lead.
He's in a pretty good spot there right now.
He can score points out of there and they're going down pretty good lead.
He's up in early two.
We've got the one on a roll short, but they're all shoulder roll.
Blocked off that arm and it off the edge.
Matt got his one.
You see that young man there?
That's Mike Man who was redshirting this year.
He's wearing a horseshoe.
His replacement t shirt.
Riley leads 5 to 2 and has riding time.
Now, Parker's got to get some offense going here on his feet if he's going to get back in this match.
Luckily, it looks like he wants to throw up sometimes, but he's on the hook right now and he's locked in.
He'd like to get a body throw off, but maybe pick up a five point move, the two point takedown, a three point near fall.
But he's got to put something together here with it.
Oh, it seems that was about as close as he's going to get to him.
5 to 2 Iowa State coaches later in the program right now.
Well, he's got a you got to throw it, get a little trip with it, if he can, to get the move off of it.
He's got to do it there for a good time.
He's got a little little over 2 minutes left, but he's a he's slide right now, 5 to 1, letting time.
Right.
He hit it.
We get it now.
He has a body lock again but a headlock by Riley puts Parker down on his back roll two and two.
Yeah.
Now he can he can be right here, right now.
Watch this route from here.
Parker Again, they're tough, but watch a headlock.
Come off of there on behalf of Riley.
Puts him down for the two point takedown.
You'll notice your account coming.
There's a count for the two point NEAR-FALL.
So that's a four point move by Riley and, of course, a two point reversal come out of it by Parker.
So the score now is seven four in favor of Ryan, and he's down.
Of course, you see the time over there.
147 left.
Yes.
I had no trouble keeping track of.
We know about 45 seconds left.
It was a good headlock maneuver by Riley, which gave him a four point, which came a four point move in 5.0.
Let's go, let's go and headlock any more.
Whatever you get that, put a kid on the mat, you're usually going to end up with a minimum four, maybe five, 7 to 4 with a minute and 40 seconds left.
Back out here.
Tim Riley is in the position of disadvantage now trying to escape, but he has a three point lead and he has a bundle of riding time.
Even with Parker moving down and on the score right now, it's the whole stand up escape.
And Parker wasn't in a fight that much longer because he's not going to score any points standing in behind.
He got to kind of eight them a little bit of not release but he's got to get to them off They have to go there and maybe get some four points here or get back in the match.
It is 8 to 4 in favor of the Hawkeyes.
The cyclones lead on the basis of a four point victory in the first match.
Quarterback, kind of a single double shot by Riley.
But Wall countered by one quick mark with the styling game referee Call the Iowa State wrestler for walking with a head and stalling at the Iowa State.
Coaches are incredulous.
That's a point in that right?
Parker had been one before and evidently the referee felt that was blocking off of the head.
There's your head there, like again, no points off that.
Yeah.
They're still scrimmaging for the takedown.
No scandal, nothing outside, no points.
And they were both scrimmaging for the takedown over there.
There were no points there.
That's Chris Campbell, who on the left who wrestled for Iowa right down to national champion.
We have only 30 seconds left and Riley leads 9 to 4.
Mark has got to get in there and take a little gamble at this point without putting this off a fall off.
Here he comes with a feather on the hook and a body can only ended up with no points yet.
He's got to take it to the mat in order to get his points.
You've got to get control on the mat.
There is he's got his two scores now.
924926.
Excuse me.
That was Parker's first takedown.
And it's now what is one point for Riley in Escape here?
Drew Parker wants to throw his man who couldn't do it at the 2.4 points and 2.2 for the back.
And that makes an eight point decision.
Oh, At the end, Iowa gets an extra point.
Boy, they move.
Yes, it was makes a major decision.
That's a four point move for the team.
And it's right in time.
It's a 15 to 6 victory right in time makes it 15 to 6 rather than a 14 to 6.
I went up on the screen with about four or 5 seconds to go in there because it made that move, you know, trying to gamble a little bit there and lost control.
And as a result, Riley comes out on top for the two or two.
So we are tied Iowa State for Iowa for because he wins at £118.
It's not official until the referee comes back and says the one of them that you are the winner.
Okay.
And Nkosi wins and Parker is the loser in the second match.
So it's Iowa for Iowa State for we're all tied up going into the £134 match.
Must be a great one back.
Oh, this is a this one we were looking forward to all night.
It's the great national champion for Iowa, Randy Lewis against Jim Gibbons.
He's getting closer and closer to beating him every time.
I want to keep in mind here, Lewis is a three time Big Ten champ, two time NCAA champion.
The first was runner up as a freshman.
They met in the semifinals of the Midlands and it was a very controversial affair.
Randy Lewis won it.
Gibbons took Lewis, goes back to the fireman's school uniform, who?
Lewis comes right out of here on the stand up for it scores 2 to 1 Gibbons of Iowa State.
This happened last year in the meet here.
Gibbons took a big lead, and then Lewis came back to win 18 to 12.
McCoy used a lot of offense.
It was kind of a single maneuver by Gibbons.
There's still strategy for the there's no point scored here yet.
Come on.
Back at Stalemate.
He still made it.
It knew the boy could improve his position without forfeiting the position he was in.
Consequently, a stalemate.
Lewis gets taken down quite a little bit, but he is so incredibly dangerous.
He's got some super moves.
He's a great technician.
He just he's a series type wrestling.
He puts a lot of moves together and he never stops very often.
It was interesting to me that in the Midlands semifinals this year, Lewis did not take Gibbons down.
I don't know the last time Gibbons or that Lewis failed to take somebody down on that match.
That was unusual.
So these are this is a this is a good pairing.
Gibbons Clark Lewis real well there on that on that shot on the double at Lewis page Dean score 4 to 4 you saw there £134 Iowa that's Iowa State and Gibbons is in 11th, I believe.
But that that counter is tough.
Well, you better go to the mat on that.
You could have seen a fatal maneuver or something else off of that.
So Gibbons wisely hung in there, but likewise stepped out there when he felt the move come around the head there.
We have only 10 seconds left In the first period.
It's 2 to 1.
Gibbons Over.
Lewis We're going to sit here.
There's Randy.
He's been a credit to the sports of the state of Iowa.
He's a remarkable wrestler.
He was the Olympic representative this year twice by the end of the first period.
Takes down Iowa's choice.
They took down Blanket said, come on down here.
Lewis wants to talk about it.
He wants to score some points.
Now, look at that record.
And six of those losses were his freshman year.
Gibbons wants to wrestle on his feet.
He lets Lewis go.
He doesn't want to mess around on the mat.
You almost had that double.
Randy Lewis is is a good Matt Russell, without question, but he's a pretty third country restaurant to speak to you.
Sure Is there again high crotch I thought sherry powder no point scored yet up either Contestant and Lewis got it.
No, that's no justification for the takedown.
Oh, there it is.
Hey, I could just see far ahead.
He got up with 225 left in the second period.
Lewis for he's up high on a big leg, stuck out of control.
The hips jamming in on him, getting upper body weight.
Trainer Sorry.
Got that in her legs.
He likes to ride with the leg in and he does tremendous sense of balance.
Randy Lewis, good luck with that.
You got behind on the hips ahead.
You notice how he controls reception.
That's a real key factor in this one.
Oh, yes.
But he wanted to dance like a turn on.
He's trying to work a half off of that or a ball.
I'm sure he is.
If he could look like maybe Jim might get the one here up, it gets a little bit more.
Almost Couldn't quite do it out of bounds, but Dad managed a good ride by Lewis Road almost a minute there after he got back for the two Lewis leads.
Gibbons He turned his hips on them.
Gibbons, as you see, is ranked fourth out of £34 at that Young Man in Black is Miscue.
Gibbons gets to his feet, but they get there he is out of the gate.
Shut that, shut that on that risk control and got the one, three, four, two, three And your fireman's carry again almost turn it into two He may get it.
No points for it yet.
That's a good counter wrestling there by Lewis but it looks like he could get the two here if he gets out near arm or shoulder through.
No point yet but near the mat edge he Lewis West to go out there's no doubt about it and there it is of course that's always that's always good for a walk the crowd here comes a move right now in his fireman's carry watch how he gets good penetration, good position.
He gets in deep on it.
There it is.
Almost turn it into two.
Lewis, a good counter wrestler, however didn't allow it to happen to go off the edge of the mat no point scored now we're scrimmaging again at live action With 48 seconds left in the second period, Lewis leads 4 to 3 Randy Lewis in the Black, the University of Iowa, the top ranked wrestling team in the country imaginable, kind of a double shot by Lewis.
And it was a late kicks brawl by Gibbons to counter it a little bit too far out.
Now we have less than 30 seconds left.
In the second period.
Well, they go 8 minutes, don't they?
Nice, nice high crotch high.
Oh, so it looks like maybe someone's hurt.
Lewis is hurt.
He was on his back.
Definitely.
And here comes the team doctor.
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
He's hurt without question.
Oh, yes.
This is.
Oh, well, I would say that sometimes you don't hear pleasant things over the referees by and obviously that's something this is a shame.
I coach this year staff too I hear even this is obviously Randy is hurt and I just think that's unfortunate.
Very unfortunate because you never like to see that.
And obviously Jim Gibbons is not feeling too good about it either.
So you saw Dan Gable come out and say something to Jim.
I'm not sure what's wrong with the replay on that particular move.
Doug, we're going to look at it here.
It looks like I know it's a shoulder to the high crotch series, right?
And hit left out of it.
From here.
He picks up again.
Right there.
He lifts.
Yeah, it's the shoulder.
He's going to come right down my shoulder.
I think right from here.
We've got a little slow motion out of it to watch it go down in that right.
Here it is.
In fact, from here I can see the swelling on the arm.
It looks like it might be a break.
There it is right there.
Oh, you see, here's the arm.
They're getting a stretcher for Randy Lewis.
And this is not the way Iowa State wanted to get six.
No ways.
Neither team would want for this to happen.
That's unfortunate.
There's the elbow.
You can see it right there.
He's holding it before the point, the matches even stop.
It's just got to be in the elbow area.
Each team has a team doctor, Bill Baird, for works for the Iowa State's team after the Iowa touchdown, they're after down and the crowd is on its feet.
For Randy Lewis, I'm sure he's in no position to appreciate it at the moment.
Oh, boy, That's just that is really sad.
Oh, well, you know, Gibbons was ahead 5 to 4.
There he is.
He's the winner.
And at points it was a default.
As you move out here, here's your high crotch series right here.
You come down to the mat, there's your left.
Notice how he comes down.
Here's where the injury is right there on that elbow.
Got turned in on him and what degree it is, I'm not certain, but it's a very difficult situation and very unfortunate.
And that's six points for Iowa State.
And now it's 10 to 14 in favor of the cyclones.
We'll try to put that one behind us if we can.
I hate to see that Randy had a check.
Well, let's just hope it is not as serious as it looks.
I one sure hope not, because he's a super wrestler, without question.
They don't win two national championships tonight and not have some real talent.
All right.
Dave Brown is wrestling £142 for Iowa State against Lenny Zaleski.
And let's think about these boys because they are undefeated.
Dave Brown is finished.
Last year, he was an all-American, you know, he was third, fourth in the NCAA.
When is Solecki, I believe was third down here.
Dave was 14 and Dave Brown was third in the Big eight, but fourth nationally.
That tells you the strength of the Big eight.
Of course, we got Lenny.
Let's get Big Ten champ in fourth.
He's the second of the Cedar Rapids Prairie representatives We'll see tonight.
And his brother Jim is wrestling at 158 in that little break shot that comes right back after it again after Brown for the first time.
Now, Lenny likes to wrestle upper body, but obviously he can shoot.
You see two it's now the word is that Lewis has a dislocated elbow.
But you're up here that way.
When the elbow came down to the mat, you know, that's how it got turned under.
And we'll sure hope for the better.
Oh, let's hope it's a real treat to see a wrestler of his ability compete.
Well, it's got us calling, Paul, calling, warning against Zaleski.
Well, hey, with all with less than a minute left in the first period, our Dave Brown is, as we know, a very cautious kind of wrestler, too.
He's been working on his takedowns.
He has had we were talking about this earlier.
He is in three years.
We're looking up on his record.
He has only one fall in three years, I should say.
He's not a pinner for sure, but an interesting here.
Both boys are from the same community.
So nearby over there, Dave Brown, Marianne and Lenny Zaleski.
I get introduced as sure if got Iowa but it very high school Cedar Rapids Brown comes behind but he couldn't make anything.
I've had a little snap down maneuver there a snap down counter going around behind blocking off the arm.
But Zaleski counted.
Welch faced off with him, and we come back up.
No point Iowa against Iowa State.
Outside back to the center referee is John Rayburn of Dahlonega, Georgia.
Bring him in from all over for this meet.
Yeah, this is the big meet and it's well to bring some some neutral party in on this kind of a contest.
Now, Zaleski has wrestled Dave Brown a lot.
He knows very well he likes to.
There's a kind of a high crowd, High Cross series he started, but period ends and it breaks down Red Textile.
That means a scoreless first period.
Dave Brown is ranked third, and he wasn't until he got hurt in December, and he'll probably get back up there again.
Now Zaleski starts work on top.
He jams, he sticks the legs.
They've got both legs locked.
He can stay in there, too long because that will be nothing more than a stalling maneuver.
Stayed in there very long.
But Brown comes up into the stand up in the mat, come back in.
You can hear the voice of Harold Nichols in the back end.
So first boy to get that question, but he could do it out of bounds after 90 seconds.
And they move it.
You can see why.
Up very high school, Cedar Rapids was the tough wrestling power it's been in the last few years with the ski boys on that was on that team here that Brown tried something a little different that time.
And Zaleski has taken the standup away by grabbing the ground now, but not for long.
Stand up with the hands.
Move out.
That's how he asked his back into him there.
Kept him a distance away from him so he could get that turn in on him to get his escape.
That was the first point one, I think.
Now Dave Brown finally got to chase, who has been in a lot of one point matches with a lot of that over the years, just won a few and lost a few.
And he's won more than he's lost.
That's right.
I got one practice going.
One.
That's a point for stalling.
Oh, he had had the warning previously.
So the second time it's a match point to and I think we're in the last 2 minutes now of the second period.
Zaleski got in on the leg good there.
Dan Brown's car coming off of that over hook in there and blocking off against the head up.
Let's go look at it.
Well, I mean, at 45 left, still the crowd is buzzing and it's a little hard to get over that last match.
Oh, that's terrible.
I hate to see that.
That's that's kind of like a snatch or something.
Yeah, well, call it kind of an arm left.
And then he will get on the high crotch series.
You know, I hear by some of them call it combination moves off of that was a double shot by Zaleski.
It looked like maybe he overshot his base by that.
He didn't take it.
Maybe he didn't pick his legs with him.
His knees get in there with good position.
Deep penetration.
Zaleski wants time out.
Andre.
Which brother?
Listen to the referee here is complaining about a wrist injury, and he might have got it jammed when he went in there on that table and put it on him.
But he overextended himself.
We have a minute and 17 seconds left in the second period.
Well, you know, it's the fortunes of war, these things, you just never know what's going to happen.
And I know lots of people were talking there you see Lenny Zaleski, who is undefeated this year.
Lots of people we talked to wrestling coaches and officials alike who said, you know, you can go down the list here and see that some people could favor the Hawkeyes in every weight.
And on the other hand, you know, it isn't going to work out that way.
And then something really terrible happens as the injury to Randy Lewis there and that one £34 with two teams with the talent that both of them have, that's the one thing that probably crimps the style of either one of them is the would be the unnecessary injuries that either one might get and that's neither team wants them.
Yeah, well, I'm sure everybody who is an Iowa wrestling fan or a wrestling fan out of any kind is going to be watching to see how Randy recovers from the extent of the injury.
A minute left in the second period.
It's brown hair of it.
It's a double shot by Zaleski and Omaha, counter by Brown.
But I wouldn't be a bit surprised here, surprised that maybe he might get involved in some stalling here pretty quick if he doesn't drop in on something or whatever, because he's gone off the mat twice with that maneuver now and the referee looks like he gave it a close look the last time.
Well, we all know that past years Dave Brown has like to use the arm drag set up on that side and he is not going to give it to him.
You can watch it.
Here's Iowa's assistant coach, Jay Robinson.
Obviously successful both as a wrestler and as a coach.
Both boys here are pretty respectful of each other ability.
That's why you're not seeing a lot of a lot of moves off that upper body technique, as Chuck Jagow You remember, Chuck, Iowa's most successful wrestler in history, fought on the basis of wins.
He had more lives than any other Hawkeye National champion and a world champ.
Pardon?
Didn't he win a world championship, too?
Yes, you did.
18 seconds left in the second period.
Two to nothing in favor of the man who grabbed Dave Brown who got into his leg again at your high crotch type series again.
No points guard off of it yet, but time is critical.
He has 5 seconds.
He got it.
Oh, boy.
Just before the half.
What timing.
And now he, Dave Brown, will be asked to protect his lead.
He has a four to nothing lead.
He got one second right in time.
The thing he's got to remember here, Doug, and you used it innocently the term protect the lead.
But yes, I understand.
You know what you mean by that, Of course.
But he doesn't want to sit back on his laurels here because he's got 3 minutes of wrestling to do and he sets back a four point lead.
You can catch up in a hurry when he can say to the referee, Mr. Official, I've pinned one man in three years.
I do my best.
Come on.
Just the way it works, it's Batman passion.
And there is a caution against Zaleski on the bottom.
We just got a confirmed report that Randy Lewis has a dislocated left elbow.
Yes, Branch wrestling.
Right.
A little tough there on top of that deep waist and near Armbar combination.
There is your older hooker on your whizzer.
It's sometimes called a kind of a stand up turn in combination for the escape.
It happened two and a half minutes that took 30 seconds for Valenti to get out.
You know, you're you'll notice many times your dog when a young man's in the bottom with the kind of talent that we're talking about tonight here, if he comes into a near escape sometime, they'll give him that escape once they feel they're losing it, because they'd rather lose the one than two or maybe some four points off stolen ground.
We're going to center now.
Zaleski has hit again from stalling, and that's twice 5 to 1 now as the score brown over Zaleski.
And these are important.
Iowa's suffered a big swing in the Gibbons Louis match when Randy Lewis got hurt.
Had a Brown's going to have to be moving in here too, pretty quick.
Like how many?
50.
Let's do this.
This thing for they have to do right now to get some offense, but those are good and set it up good Going here for a takedown.
First need to save the Huskies down four points.
He's got to get some offers.
Get him in that wake snatch.
Anyway, I got to hit that hip highest Yes high crotch series.
And he's making some offensive moves to combat that stalling consideration.
He comes at it from the outside, and that's something somewhat new, which I may be wrong, but it seems to me that's a little bit of a variation on what Dave Brown has done in the last couple of years.
Yeah, he's where he wanted to go after it again, too, in another story call, and this time it's two points against Zaleski and he's backing out of there and that's why he's getting nailed on in there in a nice, oh, snap down, blocked off the arm counter for Brown.
Almost got to but instead Solecki goes behind but he's got to take it to the mat to get to.
And there it is.
Brown went off but you notice Solecki stayed on the mat supporting part straight and consequently the two point takedown.
We've now got a seven rematch.
And Zaleski cannot stop because the next one is out.
That's right.
He's had the two point call on Starling now, so he's got to get the offense moving continually or it's all over disqualification.
That means 16 points.
He's high.
He's high right now and he's off The late control blocked them number one.
So Gillespie comes right back in 8 to 3 with exactly a minute left.
Dave Brown, who graduated from Cedar Rapids, Kennedy against Lenny Solecki, Cedar Rapids Prairie Wrestling for the two big Iowa University powers, cyclones for the Hawkeyes.
Brown goes in on the other leg, gets a different lay this time a nice high crotch series to wow how about ten three score he got right in time.
He's already in that right side.
But it's ten over three Brown leading over Zaleski by seven.
And we have only 25 seconds left Tried to sock that cradle and then lost it for good point move here by brown now with cinch up I do believe on a four point major decision.
Decision.
10 seconds left.
But Solecki goes in on that single combination, but it looks like it's going to be rounded off with the quarter.
NELSON Oh, almost.
It can't do it.
Brown went around behind.
He wanted to get the trip for two before battling.
Well, it's a 10 to 4 decision for that man, Dave Brown.
And that's a sweet revenge for him, too.
He it's been a while since he's beaten leaders the last time.
Yes.
It's now 13 for the cyclones and four for the Hawkeyes.
And we'll see if the Hawkeyes can come back from this, from this emotional shock they got when Randy Lewis got hurt.
This is Nate Carr for Iowa State against Scott Zino for Iowa.
Scott, Fresno has finished well, his sophomore year he was third his junior year, second in the Nationals.
Last year he hurt his knee and you see it's bound and he missed last year he was a redshirt.
Nate was a big eight champ last year.
However, as a as a freshman and sophomore this year, he has a record of 15 and 2 Trizzino 15 and 3 This year the Cyclones lead 13 to 4 in the team scores And I watched as all of us did, because, you know, in the finals of that 79 nationals here at Iowa State and I believe you lost in overtime, if I'm not mistaken, on a referee.
Referee's decision, a super match.
Yes.
With the boy from Oregon State kicks.
He has good technique because, you know, he's always got good technique.
And you notice, of course, he's not lacking for any power either.
Oh, he's as strong as they come.
A car of a great wrestling fan.
I you know, if anything, Jimmy, he was on the Olympic team when he was 16 and Joe Carr, who's we did so well, Fletcher Carr, who's now the coach of a successful Kentucky program and they Carr was a cyclone his sophomore year.
40 seconds left first career nobody taking any chances but boys are killing each other out there with that upper body control right now.
And, you know, it's rather interesting.
You want to well, to point out here with the contestants of the abilities that we have tonight.
Boy, one miscue, Doug.
And it's all over.
So it's a quirky selection once in a while.
We have about 11 seconds left.
I don't think they've met before.
I may be wrong, but it doesn't seem to me that they have met before.
They've been no point scored with the no warning.
So if that be the case, someone's going to get one for stalling here shortly.
Red read his war room on that simply is our fans that if there's no points scored or a warning for stalling during that first period this way, regardless of the activity, what I'm going to get one for stalling at the end of the first period.
There you see what Scott Pacino has done.
He took last year out.
That's why the 1980 record is not there.
He had a bad knee.
And without him, without DNA, Iowa still won the national title this year stand up game by a car man.
He was up and out of there like a shot outside.
Every car leads one to nothing.
Took him 7 seconds.
Well, actually, less than 3 seconds to get out.
All right, here we go.
Remind you again, we have a microphone on the referee.
So time to time.
We'll be able to see firsthand what's happening.
Gray and green Zino in black and brown car in red.
A little move by car.
Nice, nice, nice.
Single, kind of an armdrag single combination that was, you know, no point scored yet that was a nice move by was you know it's amazing the upper body development on these two Oh what power they are really strong 220 left in the second third one to nothing car picked it up.
Yes Yes.
We should say here Doug if we're not watching the color TV tonight, why the best way to determine the two here is a casino with the knee wrap and car.
The other car has been worn.
Watch.
And so he doesn't dare be too cautious.
And I would be surprised if referee John Ramer doesn't ask for an election where they're going to center man work at a center and at 145 left, second period, car leads by the score.
You see, you know, it's a new to NCAA rule this year.
We'll get to it here shortly if we don't get too much action.
Oh, there's a body throw.
Whoa, whoa.
I didn't think he was going to pull that one off, but he did.
And I think Scott was a little surprised by that.
It's three to nothing car, just a body.
Throw that little ladder, call up kind of a body lateral drop type role.
But you got to get in there chest to chest on.
You get right in there with them him.
And it's going chest to chest with Pacino.
That's pretty tough.
It is.
It's close.
Three zero in favor of car at this point with a minute and 6 seconds left in this the second period, there's kind of a shoulder roll attempt for the one point escape and it's there.
We'll look at that takedown again.
Here it comes right now.
He goes in kind of a duck on a car there.
He comes in kind of a bear hug, body thrown right off the bear hug and was, you know, of course, when he saw what was happening, turn his belly to the mat as quickly as possible.
It takes a little power to make that move.
But he hasn't let his car ride on.
48 seconds left and counting down at the second period, Iowa State against Iowa in the first of their two big dual meets every year, there's two national powers.
This whole group right there that's mad mad at their side.
The Iowa State.
Yeah, that's got he's going to say that a moment ago at that match edge.
That's a place you can never want to let up.
There's a lot of points lost at the match edge.
Likewise gain where fellows have a tendency to let up once in a while when they think that maybe they're going off.
That's the time when you really want to wrestle are against casino At some point here, the Hawkeyes, I think, are going to have to have something good happen to get their thinking back positive again.
And Scott does he know is trailing by two against Nate Carr at the end of the second period with that threat.
And you know, let's go the Iowa State wrestler Carr goes on top the riding time, 35 seconds for Carr and 3 seconds for Trizano.
There's no potential point there yet for either man.
That's less.
Anderson of Iowa State assistant coach for many years, former national champion himself on two occasions.
Why don't whistle in Iowa native?
Yes, he was a head coach out of Washington for a while until that program collapsed because, you know, comes into the stand up and wants to spot those hands to game the neutral position.
But they go off the match edge and would look to look for him to come right back up there again here.
The thing for Carr to do, of course, the champion to take that initial move away from it, if you can see what Scott comes up with a roll, Nice roll too.
But it really was, Carr countered.
Well, and it was only a one point loss.
Could have been worse.
Here comes on, Move here.
Now he takes a top position.
Carr does.
Here comes your shoulder rolled.
Then he comes back out, switches those hips out, comes back to the knees, runs out.
That's really what amounts to just runs out and gets his one.
And Carr shucks him off with the forearm smash at the match edge.
But I don't think any big problem.
Well, I hope not.
Here's casino talking it over he's asking right now how much riding time is there.
And of course there's 46 seconds riding time for car and 3 seconds for casino.
So there's no riding time advantage for either point.
Carr has a takedown at an escaped casino, has escaped twice, so it's 3 to 2 in favor of the cyclone.
Let's look back over here while we have a second again, for those of you.
I joined this late, Mike, because he beat Berry Davis 13 to 5 for a four point Iowa State decision.
Tim Riley beat Adley Parker 15 to 6 to match it.
And then Randy Lewis was injured.
Gibbons was winning 5 to 4 and on a throw to the mat Lewis got hurt car it is thought that Omaha throw it but he threw it in their chest to chest on him Got him beat got it locked him off for it.
And of course here it is right here.
Notice how take got lucky in the old berry Come back with that drop and he has just enough left of the leg right.
Well he noticed his supporting bar stayed in bounds and that's what gave him the points.
We're back to live action again.
Carr is leading 5 to 2 with 225 left ankle block ride by Carr.
He won't be able to keep that leg up there very long.
Hey, hey, that's the score.
And it's a potential riding time point for Carr at this point too.
Some people call that movie made kind of a combination off a shoe play, but that's a terminology most people wouldn't understand.
So we refer to it as a body throw off the bear hug, warning against casino on the bottom for stalling.
And he's got that near leg scissor.
They're now controlling the hip throw.
Well, keeping him flattened out doesn't give us an opportunity to get much put together here.
Is Carr working hard on top or giving a good impression of it anyway, and now he's jamming in on him.
For us to keep the pressure on him, that takes it, that takes it.
It's a move away from casino, catches him getting his knees underneath him.
That's a point now for Carr for a penalty against casino Scala 6 to 2 in favor of the Iowa State cyclones with a minute and 15 left roll attempt there by Pacino.
He's still down off the edge of the mat.
It happened out of bounds for six two favor of Carr one minute 12 seconds to go in the third period.
And again we say that something good is going to have to happen for the Hawkeyes here rather quickly.
I was kind of tempted to sit out, switch maneuver there by Pacino, but countered well by a car that left the deep waist there pretty well on him.
He's got that head lever going in on him to control that.
Your arm.
We're less than a minute away from the end of this match at £150 between Nate Carr and Scott Trevino.
And Carr leads six two to win by another point for the top man at 7 to 2, all in on the bottom position.
Notice he did not stop the match.
College wrestling is a little different than high school wrestling here.
This is the one time when they penalize the bottom man.
But do not stop the match in down wrestling high school.
You would have stopped the match and then penalized.
This is the one most basic difference in scoring in the bottom and top position.
But down on the mat, wrestlers stay down black 18 seconds left in the £150 match Nate Carr against casino that's a stand up escape brought him right back down sucked him back is keeping the pressure on him He's wrestled a super match Carr has oh has made he's had both takedowns and one escape and two penalty points and leads 7 to 2.
That's it.
He gets it right in time point and it's 8 to 2.
A victory for Nate Carr and Iowa State takes a 16 to 4 lead over the heavily favored Iowa Hawkeyes that was that was quite a match and wrestled real well.
As we say, if the Hawkeyes are going to come back, something good is going to have to happen for them rather quickly.
They're coming up into some real power.
They have their power and Iowa State has power.
And whoever is emotionally set is very often the one who wins from £158.
Chip Farina for Iowa State for him to against another Zaleski Jims, Alaska, sophomore from Cedar Rapids Prairie, who is nine and one and see what happens.
I'm sure Dan Gable told Zaleski, go right out now they need some points here pretty quick, like they do to get back into this, although let's face it, with four or five matches to go and with this kind of talent, anything can happen.
This thing is far, far from being over.
We saw that last year, right?
It was the beat in Iowa State, the Banach brothers, but back to back pins on the board and the Hawkeyes pulled one out, I guess we did mention earlier.
But both these boys are former two time high school champions, Reno from Franklin Park, Illinois, and Jim Zaleski, another Cedar Rapids brewery, high school prep, and they're both sophomores.
Zaleski was countering a double leg shot of threes.
Nice job of countering it.
Sprawled in there, you know, was always proud.
Got his hips back, legs back.
Think we're going to got a little off his pace I think on that shot 55 seconds left first period at upper body moves out on behalf of both boys.
It seems the last year reached out for that body language.
That's a warning against the Iowa State.
Boy gym for you.
Not much activity going on up here right now.
That's the next man up for Iowa State, the one ranked Perry Hoffman.
He'll go against my dad on that road.
Good luck.
Oh, boy.
We've already had some good ones.
And we're going to have some more 25 seconds left.
First period, not much going on out there right now, both working for some upper body type technique under the arm and over on hooks series, locking in, maybe get a body throw and there's a nice double shot by Solecki No point Hunter Well well that was a maneuver.
Oh yes outside the offensive maneuver and a good counter.
6 seconds left.
That'll be it for this period.
And there was a warning against Farina, so there'll be nothing further when it takes time, Farina says.
I'll go up in the second period and down in the third, second period.
MAN, No score.
Okay, Rad, Come on down on a whistle to ask you something about near a stand up right quick and bring a counter is merely by staying in behind coming up with him, locking in from behind, keeping him from that one point escape.
But again, I'll point you out.
He's still locked in on him and he's going to get it shortly, though, but he hasn't given them yet.
I got one here it is one point escape for Jim Zaleski outside the Iowa boy leads one to nothing.
It was imperative that Zaleski not only faced off with GREENE, but also made that release, that lock the three and a half on him head on in for the one point escape.
That's the first time an Iowa boy has been a ahead in a match since a Louis Gibbons match.
220 left second period.
It was kind of a snap down for him.
Step down by Farina, but Zaleski kind of roll well came by, but fought right back after him on it.
And nothing happened again.
It's these are both sophomores.
Last year we saw a lot of not just Jim Zaleski, but also Cain Miller.
Here's your firearms carry out maneuver by Farina, but off the edge they go about 2 minutes left now second period and fireman's carry when you work that thing gets got to be done fairly quick.
Yeah, you're going to make it work.
He was kind of he didn't have a real good handle on the arm, kind of walking his way through it.
It's got to be quicker.
Get in your head That that's everybody.
That's it.
Yeah.
Zaleski looked like he wanted to throw a high crotch at each other, and Farina did.
Didn't get it.
They traded successful high crotch maneuvers, but they didn't want to get both those arms locked in their no points.
But it's been interesting.
Both these boys wrestle very similar style.
It's one to nothing in favor of Zaleski.
A minute left, second period.
We haven't had a leg shot for a while, and it may be possible somebody would get called a surprise.
Nevertheless, he didn't come back.
He won because he had a good double leg takedown shot.
There earlier, which was counter, but he was in there deep on it.
49 seconds left in the second period, the team score is 16 to 4 over the Iowa State cyclones against the favored Hawkeyes.
Go, go, go.
Oh, I've got to get some activity going here or somebody is going to get called for.
What's worth it?
Got to get something going.
They've given up the legs here in the last minute or so.
Now, that was a shot shot.
The counter as he's heading now, 24 seconds left, second period.
That's the Iowa State Brain Trust.
NICHOLS And Anderson.
Oh, it's 15 seconds time.
I'm a little surprised here.
I thought maybe there might be a bone about some sort of call.
But I guess John Raber appreciates this upper body stuff, too.
Not much activity there.
The both of them kind of finish each other off.
So let's go.
Karina has 23 seconds of riding time.
He's the only one who's been on top.
Zaleski gets his chance now, leading one to nothing by virtue of an escape but a high school record.
The 153 wins against the six losses, two time state high school champ for Reno and all of those losses in his sophomore year at air conditioned in Edgar stand up and Smith the hands got the one point escape and it's 1 to 1 now.
No riding times.
So it's going to come down as it so often does.
Who can make that takedown?
And likewise, you want to consider the fact that Farinas had a warning against him on stalling and the way wrestling's been going on their feet.
You know, that could be a barrier here, a consideration again.
And there it is.
Well, that's a point.
That has to be a point I'll try to go on at this point.
I don't know if you call it.
Yes, he did call it nuts.
It must be reading my mind.
But I just knew that had to be a factor 2 to 1 in favors.
I'll ask you to write it under arm spin and then get it.
Oh, and that kind of a snap down the line throw and the two point takedown to Laskey.
Oh, he just gave that one up.
And now Zaleski is called off because Farina was hurt.
Just with 2 minutes, 14 seconds left in the match for the takedown.
He's on his feet.
I think he got a little bit there on that snap down maneuver, maybe got a head jam there, too.
The matter comes out replay here.
Now, notice he comes through with that spin through there.
Here comes your snap down, his blocking out.
There it is right there.
They head hit the mat.
I think that was a maneuver that caused a little fuzziness.
I heard Harold Nichols a moment ago say he thought he was hurt before the takedown.
It might be interesting to see if he might have hit his head, as he could have.
I don't know.
It didn't appear that way, but it's hard to tell for to one in favor of Jim Zaleski.
And believe me, the OCS want to get them all from now on.
Here are the results of this year's Middlesex.
Look that Iowa scored.
Well, they ran away with it.
Of course.
The Wisconsin wrestling Club came in second Iowa State that had nowhere near a full team on the premises, finished third.
The Hawkeye Wrestling Club with former Hawks wrestlers finished fourth, and LSU, which is a surprising fifth in the country as well as in the Midlands.
Yes, that's real surprising.
The southern team.
There are some of our future events that Iowa State, Wisconsin meet is going to be from Wisconsin.
We're going to pick that up from Wisconsin Station for you.
We're back in action.
We're playing it down.
He's got to kind of turn and sit out, turn in.
He's either going to get one or two out of this, it appears.
Oh, he let us know and not it.
No point yet.
There's one.
He almost had the two.
It looked like he had it, but he let it slip at the last second.
And it's another escape for Farina.
He leads four.
He trails 4 to 2 on.
He's having trouble seeing stars.
He says he's first of all.
Yeah.
He says he's seeing spots in spots.
Yeah, give me some spots.
Something on me or something.
Evidently he got out.
Certainly he get that head on that snap down counter because he's filling the other side of his head and he's sure he didn't hit with the.
Yeah.
The back part of his head on that man.
Well here's the rest of them at the lineup for our cyclone wrestling on Mondays and Thursdays at 1030.
Remember for the next five weeks, you can see we have a Drake made in there with Minnesota down at the bottom, you and I, against Cal.
Bakersfield for that Bakersfield team is something they beat Oklahoma the other day.
That's got to be a toughie.
Iowa Oklahoma from Iowa City.
We're looking forward to bring a couple of those big Hawkeye hits this year to Iowa, Oklahoma State, and we'll see Iowa State this year against the Sooners of Oklahoma Arenas in on a single walk.
Both go off out of bounds.
Zaleski is done very well.
Farina gets it just to the limit and can't keep it off unless he's got a good job here.
A minute.
30 left.
There's no appreciable riding time either way, so late on points going again.
01052 at the second penalty point against Reno and that was a big win because it means now a takedown doesn't tie.
It takes more of a takedown.
Farina got in the leg and lost it at the beautiful counter but nice counter move by Solecki.
Got a lot of power.
Yes, he has even more power.
He doesn't appear that way physically.
He certainly doesn't appear weak either.
But I mean, he has that appearance of over powering.
But he had a little we have about a minute left in the match and Zaleski leads 7 to 2.
Yeah.
Oh, Jeff Arena has been unable to penetrate him.
And now Zaleski has Farina in a cradle.
If he does, he's gotten four points out of it.
If he gets it inside shoulder down, he can get the ball.
Boy, I'll tell you, Here's what Iowa really wants to get the three pointer.
But notice that inside shoulder, if he gets it down, he'll get the ball down and he's got a lot of time to come out.
37 seconds.
Pretty tough to get that inside of him, out of that box, Peter over there.
But it's a three point move by Zaleski.
He leads 10 to 2.
Ryan is going to have to hustle underneath.
Just fought that being on the back.
Zaleski Looking real good here in this arena.
A lot of offense going on.
He's a very determined young wrestler at this point.
And this may be what Iowa needs to turn their spirits around and get their start.
And again, trailing 16 to 4 in the team score here at the end of this match.
That's a four point margin where teams cause concern and there was riding time and it's now 11 to 2 in a victory for Jim Zaleski at £158 over Iowa State's Jim Arena tonight IPTV and will be debuting a new feature to its Cycle Wrestling series every week.
A behind the scenes look at one of the state's top wrestlers.
So right now let's meet.
I ask you, is Perry Hubbell off the map?
£367.
Harry Hummel of Iowa State of Kentucky.
Iowa State's Perry Hummel hails from Urbandale, Iowa.
Last year as a freshman, Perry won the Big Eight title and placed second in the National Collegiate Championships, and he won 18 consecutive matches.
Perry's record is impressive, but what does he have to do to achieve those goals?
Perry began his wrestling career at Dowling High School in West Des Moines, Iowa, under the guidance of coach Bob Darragh.
13,000 people come here to watch me wrestle, But if you don't wrestle here tonight, you're never going to get there.
He's the one who got me in starting wrestling in ninth grade, he pulled me out of the hallways from the national tryout.
I did.
And ever since I liked and he tons of discipline, mostly, and desire to work.
Coach Jerry, you don't you don't work in dispatch.
So you shouldn't be out here because he set the world to me, because he makes you do it.
And you have to be a champion if you're, for example, through to high school and college is goal in real time.
This work very hard.
Do my best answer.
I won my second state title and I had goals from myself to wrestle in college and I decided to wrestle.
I assume Perry's decision to go to Iowa State was due largely to coach Harold Nichols and assistant coach Wes Anderson.
They've put him through so many moves and use in high school with different setups and stuff because college wrestlers usually have better positions, their stance, and they're a lot stronger.
So he gave a little bit better technique extremely well, and that's why I like him a lot.
But usually don't put that much pressure on myself.
But it's there's a lot of pressure.
I usually perform a lot better, too, though.
He's a you know, makes me try harder and my style is just supposed to go until he quits as the winner.
Very humble.
Thank God this is being asked to train you.
Get the ball, boy.
I'll tell you.
Here's what Iowa really wants to get the three pointer.
But notice that inside Junior, if he gets it down, he'll get the ball down.
And he's got a lot of time to my 37 seconds.
Pretty tough to get that inside of him out of that ball screener over there.
But it's a three point move by Zaleski.
He leads 10 to 2.
GREENE is going to have to hustle underneath just the thought that being on the back.
ZALESKI looking real good here in this arena, let our offense go on.
He's a very determined young wrestler at this point.
And this may be what Iowa needs to turn their spirits around and get their started again, trailing 16 to 4 in the team score here at the end of this match.
That's a four point margin for team sports concerned.
And there was riding time and it's now 11 to 2 and a victory for Jim Zaleski at £158 over Iowa State's Jim Farina.
Tonight IPTV and we'll be debuting a new feature to its Cycle Wrestling series every week.
A behind the scenes look at one of the state's top wrestlers.
So right now let's meet.
I ask you, is Perry Hubbell off the map here?
And here is Perry Hoffman up against Mike?
D.A.
Here is one of the future parts of the evening.
I'll tell you, everybody's looking forward to this one.
Ask how Barlow was ranked number one for Iowa State.
Deanna, a marvelous technician, as I'm sure Dave will tell you here, lots of times saw this great Owens, who has been an all-American several times as a single on the whole, is getting picked up in the air.
If it gets him on the mat, you may get two.
But notice how Deanna blocked that beautiful counter.
That pretty boy turned it into a three point takedown.
Looking sense of balance by D.A.
That was a marvelous move.
Look at the grin on his face.
I met him at Temple in L.A.
He to a good offensive move by Hummel into a counter takedown that's here.
He did a nice job of it.
Team score 16 for Iowa State and seven for Iowa now.
And Brianna gets the first takedown against Perry Hummel of Iowa State is up.
He's trying to get those hands but the getting one point escape B.A.
puts it back to the mat.
Last year Deanna missed the year because of an operation on a on his arm and it's great to see him back.
And this year Perry Hummel he almost had to have split and got the one, but Deanna came right down in that single leg and counted real well.
So we're still in scrimmaging situation with the Anna in control No Points exchange.
The score is 16 to 18 score.
It's I gave you a seven for Iowa.
It's eight.
That was a 4.0.
Perry match last time.
It was your one point escape.
Kind of a stand up front end by Perry for now.
2 to 1 started to say Mike Deanna was out with injuries last year and this year for the first time with a serious degree.
Perry Hummels had some bumps and bruises.
He has a sore in the air and see his wrist is wrapped there.
Deanna Garner, 58 seconds riding time, 2 seconds short of having that advantage, and Mike leads 2 to 1.
He's a senior from Bay Village, Ohio.
Three times.
He's won a Big Ten title every year.
I think we mentioned Perry here, West Des Moines, Dowling Prep, where he was a state high school champion and had a super round that last year.
He was favorite all the way through the season, I think, and lost in the national finals to just almost come out of nowhere.
Boy, this recent North Carolina test in one second left this without a trace.
So 58 seconds of writing time for Deanna.
Deanna gets his choice top position.
Deanna wants up me quite a record 50 342423 wins four losses two times.
Okay.
Come on down on Elizabeth block.
That's last year.
And this year, Perry didn't put an awful lot together on that initial move, on or off the whistle, but he's attempting to stand up and stay third.
Deanna is kind of pressuring in with that deep waist and knocking that and your arm out.
I dropped to the single as a counter move.
I was your stand up and he's put the hand out with the wrist control and got his one point escape.
Deanna comes up with another set of writing minutes to make it a minute 17 total for him so far.
So on the board it's 2 to 3 second period to go back up.
Deanna has the only takedown.
Hummel two escapes and these are two of the very best in the country at this way.
Oh, without question.
We mentioned Vienna is good.
Technician Both of these boys are super technique.
Deanna really pushing it now pushed hard, try to get him off his base.
Couldn't do it outside.
All right.
I think the only way you'd cut it, these two boys, when it's all over, are going to be one two in the country.
He'll go, men, line up.
Well, I'm sure this is the match for the number one rating right now at this point, the year where whether you pay much attention to ratings, are you a wrestling fan or not is another matter.
And at 30 left to you, you see how low Deanna's keeping, how the last year was able to get in on the people with that wonderful double leg.
And I think people are wrestling in low.
They aren't letting them come under there anymore.
Deanna is leading with that foot and it comes in on that high clock series, almost turned it into two.
But Hummel countered well with that kind of a whip on limp arm, so to speak, and turn out stays in the neutral position.
It's a nice move by both boys offensively as well as defensively back Nikolai and that's a fact up his up the Anna's call for backing away that's a stall warning I think Dan Gable wants to talk to Mr. Raber about that.
Let's listen in.
So he's going to be in closing, I want to say that I feel it that there's a lot of moving, but I feel like one guy moves up, the other guy's pushing.
Right.
Okay.
Cause your man is making the offensive shots off of him, though.
He's only come back after you shoot.
Right?
Here we go.
What a very polite exchange, wasn't it?
I think that caution ready was Dan was concerned about a given situation.
Two there as far as the stalling and the shooting and so on.
And that's the way you'd expect anyone to approach one of the official coach protest or whatever.
And that's the way you like See, it may or may not agree.
I mean, I may agree, but at least it does so in a very sportsmanlike manner.
And that's good.
40 seconds left.
In the second period, it's still two to the eye, has a lightning time advantage and Hubble can't get close enough to make that single or double.
What are both boys here of our working foursome High Cross series singles and doubles.
But they're rewarding each other off pretty the two because they both got a real low center of gravity.
20 seconds, second, third, fourth day low.
They protect their legs real well.
Now, the third period, Hummel will start up as a shot.
Oh, this is a counter move.
No points yet.
Almost.
But there was a counter move by Deanna and may see that by Hummel after the almost had the two on kind of a snap down four on smash move so it's one period left and Parry Hummel will start on top it's 2 to 2 Deanna has a minute and 17 seconds worth of riding time which Hummel would have to erase to make it absolutely even.
Well, he's not.
I don't believe that either one of them are capable of wrestling or riding the other one for a full 3 minutes.
So he's hoping to negate some of that riding time.
And then maybe if there is an escape, why he couldn't do it because in 7 seconds and the leads 3 to 2 with potential riding time, Deanna is very clever, countering and one thing to remember off of his countering, he puts a lot of offense off of that.
He scores a lot of points countermove but he's a good technician and then the ferry's the same way.
Good kind of wrestler.
He countered that move that Deanna made to near the end of that last period real well I think two points.
There's been only one takedown in this match and it was scored by Deanna after a remarkable series early in the first period.
Hummel has had two escapes.
Deanna has had one now we are down to 2 minutes.
Both boys, I think, again, looking for that, that little mistake, a little miscue by one of the others when they consider there's a nice move by Hummel got in there with pretty good penetration He's got that single leg lock If he can turn it into two, it looks like he might.
Well, nothing yet.
Nothing yet.
Good.
Windsor by the river.
Move over.
Hart.
No point.
We're down to a minute and a half body lock by.
Hubbell No points after Phil's conviction for the takedown.
If he can get that near ankle now, he might get it.
Here it is.
But the pressure turned on him as a one point escape.
I don't believe he gave any points at all.
I got he's still three two.
I thought we had the two and one in there, but evidently not.
The referee said don't give any points until he has time to react and everybody felt there wasn't enough reaction time.
I just figured it was error.
We are less than a minute away from the end of this match.
Diana in Black for the University of Iowa Hawkeyes and a very big dual meet leads 3 to 2 and he has some riding time, but he also has a stalwart and he's going to get called for run this time.
I think this man this one when I was starting against Deanna.
So it's now a43 score, Deanna leading.
But keep in mind, he has riding time.
Likewise, it's three, three, three, three, three, three.
So a takedown here is everything.
A takedown is everything here?
He's got to go after him.
He's got to have either another penalty here on stalling or he's got to get some and get a takedown, because with 20 seconds left, 20 seconds 13, you see the clock up there at the top of the screen.
And the point is giving up by 5 seconds.
Wow.
I thought he was getting a point.
But again, the warning against.
There it is.
And it's a victory for Mike.
Deanna on writing Time.
Now, wait a minute.
Wait.
This isn't over yet.
Here we got the I think you're right, but looks like the match boy is different up there than what it should be against Iowa State.
No warning against Iowa State.
I'm sure they're right.
Yes.
The warning was against four three Iowa.
So therefore, the score is what, three?
Right.
So, Mike, Deanna is the victor.
He has defeated Gary Hummel 4 to 3 at £167.
And Mike, Deanna is out there saying nice four three third round Iowa.
Yeah.
Okay.
That's the Florida three.
That's good match guys are coming back.
Two excellent wrestlers, good.
Yes, the Hawkeyes are coming back.
They now trail 16 to 11.
So happy, Mike, Deanna, things have turned around since back of 134 when Randy Lewis was taken out of here on a stretcher with a dislocated elbow.
Now £177, the national champion from Iowa can't get back against Dave Allen.
Third ranked finished second in the Nationals to Manik last year.
Allen's in Manik is so tough just coming off of that cross Crossface and goes around behind no point scored yet.
He's got to take him to the mat if he's going to get points for his off the mat.
Oh, it was a series of move by both boys and no point scoring.
Manik is a very strong, very awful, nice single run rate run by Alan for the two point takedown.
Remember what happened last year?
Allen made a couple of great takedowns and then got caught.
Well, this Bennett's a real pinner.
We all know that now, having won a national championship of the freshman, we know what kind of a wrestler he is.
He's a great wrestler.
He's strong real competitor.
Scores 2 to 1 in favor of Allen Iowa State leads in the team score by five.
The biggest advantage Iowa State took was when they got six points.
134 Randy Lewis injured Gibbons of Iowa State was leading at the time.
Allen trying to go looking for that leg again that single that gap eyes high crotch series if he can get it I remember reading there was an article one of the local newspapers this week about Dave Allen, this feeling that he's in better shape this year than he's getting.
He's worked harder on stamina.
He doesn't like to run a lot.
I know a lot of people feel that way, but he says he's working hard at that this year and he thinks stamina might make the difference.
I don't think either boy wants to get caught in there tight on a on a upper body move because it could be a high point in a hurry.
Manik is ranked second because he lost a column.
Kill ran up Lehigh earlier this year in a dual need out in Pennsylvania.
We know that Kill Ram is no Johnny come lately because we saw him defeat Dave Allen rather decisively here last year.
Nice move by Allen but well countered by Bennett.
Oh two and two back quite soon to take down plus the near-fall.
So that was a good countermove.
Here it is right here Now we'll see why.
Mr. From your trip off your trip body throw away putting down for two and there's your two point NEARFALL You saw the visual hand count and of course, Allen comes on through with it.
Carry it ends five two.
Oh.
Harold Nichols was arguing that that was not that he didn't ever stop in that role, that Bennett could never hold it.
And you're right in that.
You're right.
The comment as far as stop oh, he's got to do is hold him there.
There's no count considering the fall is a one count.
So it's just a matter of a momentary stop.
Now, Allen starts on top.
Second period, 5 to 2 leading.
He's trailing 5 to 2 against Ed Bennett, who comes around.
Boy, is he dangerous.
He's strong, stands up and comes around for the one.
He is so full of zest out there now.
He just loves to go out and get a hold of people, throw out 6 to 2.
He's had the last six points.
Yes, he has a lot of power.
I guess we saw that with a lot of his wrestlers.
But they do have but this young man is really strong.
He goes in for a double leg shot, countered by Dave.
It's a nice move, but countered beautifully by Bennett.
We've got the cross face against Dave.
More points scored yet he's blocking off him but it looks like he may come around both off the mat.
I don't believe he'll have any points.
You know Vanek stepped off of his knee 6 to 2 back Does a good job of that Crossface sprawls nicely and walks around behind that is Allen try I think it was staying away a little bit.
He doesn't like to get it to let Manik get his favorite tie up, which is a body lock.
6 to 2 in the national championship.
This is the national championship match last year.
That's right.
They met in the finals.
16 to 5, I believe was the score.
I think that's correct.
Manik Of course I won't be the national champion.
Allen couldn't quite reach for that minute and 8 seconds left this crack.
Second period I got black.
So warning against Manik for stalling referees trying to get a little activity started here on the feed.
We we've had quite a bit of activity till just here the last 2030 seconds.
Here's a kid's right in time right now we're having a discussion at the scorers table.
Referee is like the writing time is a discrepancy.
There now 9 seconds apiece.
So right now 14 for Allen We see Dave Allen here on the screen, right third and there nicely good time.
Jay Robinson with this team split the first two Iowa State one, the next three.
Now the Hawkeyes are on a scan.
They have won two consecutive decisions, Jim Zaleski and Mike Deanna, 158 and 167.
And they're trying to keep it alive.
Now, we've got a little discrepancy in the writing time, advantage time here on the behalf of both wrestlers.
We are trying to score away at the bench.
And one more and 2 seconds left.
We've been talking a lot of wonderful.
But it one, two, two, wonderful.
1040104.
Not a fan of.
Yeah, those are the things the official never likes to happen at the bench.
That's good, right?
They somehow never are able to exactly know where that run of any time was unless someone knows what the clock had showing on it when it right when it was an error.
Well, they were they got the advantage time straightened out.
And then while that was happening, somebody hit the time button I think up above and changed the whole match time.
A minute left in the second period.
Ed Banach of Iowa leads Dave Allen 6 to 2.
They had goals in on that single and tried to turn it into a double.
He looked like he might get two out of it.
He did because banks hands were down.
She panic.
Look at that wizard.
He's down back 4 to 6 four four Allen up 624.
That's the second takedown he's been able to get.
He made a nice move off out stayed with him all the way pressured him the difference in the match day because that place.
You bet Well it was a four point move.
Manek stands up, splits the hands, turns around, scared black faces off with a10 30 seconds second period, getting ready and there's a nice single shot by Bannach.
He got in there pretty deep on it, warding him off on that ankle back there.
But looks like that it might turn this into two.
And there it is.
Got about 9 seconds left in the period.
He got that and it's now 9 to 4 and escaping a takedown has it's got that year on bard pretty good there a lot of pressure but set up the right time here it's the end of the second period here comes our move here right you notice both up working on the upper body.
There comes your single shot over there, kind of a high crotch series.
He stays with it.
However, a lot of guys might have quit on that, but he stayed with a turn it into kind of a double powered in frustration to the mat for two years.
Now back to live action again and Banach starts on top and period number three leading by five.
There is no riding time advantage.
Allen had only 23 seconds back and Bennett wanted to stop him before this First was over.
The first first.
If one wrestler has at the end of the match, should come one minute more riding time than the others.
He gets up on stage, stands up, he get to keep those hands left.
There's the one 9 to 5 for banning the Hawks trailing the team score by five.
A lot of time left in the third period.
Little over 2 minutes and 30 seconds out, but duck under single combination to the far side attempt by Dave Allen.
So set it up for that head pull.
Well, there's a lot of little techniques for setting moves up there, though.
You got a head fakes, head snaps, arm throws, touch and go type situations.
There's a nice armdrag attempt there by Allen but countered and blocked off well by Banach for the two point takedown.
A nice counter takedown.
Allen is because of the score required to take a few chances here.
Oh absolutely.
When you're down, you better pull out all the stops and go after it.
Now the question is, can the Hawks pick up another score?
Because I'm sure would like to get at least an eight point difference.
That was an intentional release there for one point escape for Dave, it's 11 to 6.
Eddie Mannix takedown would help the cause here for Iowa State a great deal, as you say, and stay away from a major decision.
He wanted to come right up into a bear hug.
It looked kind of off with a little duck under combination.
It's kind of cute there.
The nice move countered.
Well, again, Bennett goes off a nice move.
Oh.
Oh, he's so days off the math.
There's no points there.
And he stayed on the matter.
What about the supporting points of both wrestlers?
One out.
That was a good call by the referee, Harold Nichols.
It was a good call at Four Seasons in which during the dual meet season, he didn't lose to anybody.
And 45 seconds left.
It's frantic by five take down with beat of the great advantage to Iowa State at this point likewise would be a great advantage for the hawks if they got one because to give them that 14 points, they need a major decision right now.
11 six score oh oh.
He'll need a little more of that.
I'll get rid of get rid.
That's the first warning against our.
And there's John Force.
He's going to go an extra 190.
There is a double leg shot.
They turn it into a two point takedown.
Real nicely done.
That's where a beginner can learn something.
That was an out on entry move.
But he did it well, got in deep penetrated, got the two point takedown.
15 seconds left.
You see Allen trying to get the ball.
I'm sure there are, but it's Mannix pretty tough down here.
He's a tough hombre and he knows what's going on in the bottom, I'm sure, to the night where at the end of it, Dave, it's going to go to panic by 11 to 8, Ed Matic defeats Dave Allen 11 to 8.
He has three points for Iowa, and now they go up to 14.
Iowa State 16.
The Hawkeyes have won the last three.
Yes, they have.
We got two to go.
But I'll tell you, the one that Iowa figures that might win a heavyweight, I think they figure I would suspect they figure that who better to beat Dave Owens, Mark?
And for both teams this well, they're both big, but this one is a must for Iowa State right here.
Yes, it sure is.
What they're five, John, 43, from Ann Arbor, Michigan, Mike Mann is being redshirted this year.
And John Force, he's being given his chance.
He's a senior 15 and three against Pete Bush, 14 three and one a sophomore from Davenport Assumption, who was a state champion two years ago.
And these are the numbers three and four ranked man in the country, force number three.
I remember Pete Busch at the high school ranks, and he's a competitor.
He'll go after him.
So I think we'll see a good match here.
And of course, John's always been a real good competitor.
He'll we'll see a lot of offense in this match.
I believe I'd be disappointed if we don't put out 16 to 14 Iowa State over Iowa at £180.
This is the second to the last match.
The penultimate here.
Both boys are kind of feeling each other out right now, see if they can't get a little miscue here or there.
The other one to take advantage and get the takedown kind of dropped down to the knees looking for an opening underneath in there for she has wrestled at £177 in the last couple of years to add.
Bush just looks bigger, although, yeah, he does Well of course he's I think, a little more physical from the standpoint of power, at least it appears that way.
Got a clue that had come off looking at four.
She has worn for backing away from all this next time that happens at this point, that's had to be a match point.
They're being cautious, too.
I don't believe these boys have that either, do you?
I don't recall that they have.
I've not seen any indication where they have in the past go with that warning, stalling and stalling warning being called on for she at this point early in the match, he'll want to get the going on this offense here.
He dropped in off that high crotch series.
If he can get him back on the mat, maybe could turn it into two.
But they're near the math edge right now and Pete's countering real well and pressuring it on him with that leg and or she switches to a double.
Yes.
He may get it in a two yet and it is going to fall for she is rather a good technician on his feet.
Yes, he is.
He didn't quit on that move movie.
There's another case as you move by the north.
I look he turned that into a double right there.
He's in there deep.
He lifts with the shoulders in the back, turn it into two points.
There it is right now.
Come on down, Red.
Notice again, the edge of the mat wrestling.
How important it is, How many points are lost in gain there?
What gets lit up when they should be going in the cold, so to speak.
That's the end of the period, first period down.
And Bush decides that he will go down.
Look at that crowd.
It's a big full house here at Iowa State's Hilton Coliseum.
For those of you who are around the country who may not realize how many people see wrestling matches in the state of Iowa, this place will hold 14,000 something.
And everyone here watching these two great wrestling teams, Morrissey started on top.
Now they jam.
Pete Busch on that stand up is great, but Pete was strong enough to come up on it, but he did not gain the escape.
It's a good record and of course he has not really been considered the starter.
He's filled in behind Allen at Man Last, now 5214 record in this league is pretty tough.
I think I saw earlier this year where Harold Nichols said all the other coaches are telling me the course he's off for good.
We better get this chance.
Well, he's staying right with him.
He's determined they're on top to beat Bush.
They look very good in the Meadowlands tournament.
Oh, that's a caution against Bush now.
Probably against a false start.
What amounts to starting before the whistle, it was let's get serious next time.
It's a match point.
Well, he finished fifth in the Meadowlands.
The other kind of a roll attempt there countered pretty well by foreshadowing.
He's on top.
He's got that near leg scissored in.
Look, we may get a potentially dangerous call here and we did here sit down back too much of a chance of injury up there when you get the legs stepped in and he's supporting all that weight on his back, all he got to do is go into a back trip or fall on one angle or another and we've got an injury, unnecessary Midlands Tournament policy one point and that's a caution against Bush and it costs the point this time.
At the second time, it's a false start.
That's what it amounts to come down, darting prior to the whistle as another roll attempt.
And they're all countered by 48 real well, he's working off that lever.
They're trying to work a Half Nelson series off of that scissoring.
The new leg he's up pretty high on and we may get that call again there it is potentially dangerous So we're talking about the Midlands.
And the Midlands is the big early season tournament in the country.
It's Evanston, Illinois, and it's an open tournament.
Lots of collegiate teams like to go there and some when they think they're going to be really good, kind of avoid it too, so they don't hit their big opponents just real too early.
And it helps to determine who the powers are.
Probably early in the season four, she leads three to nothing with 2 minutes left.
Second period here, Bush stands up and of course she jams in on him and locks in as we're coming up to prevent that escape.
Good.
Come on down, Red.
Now, that's the referee you hear John RAEBURN?
Well, she's got writing time at this point to talk about a minute and 5 seconds worth caution.
Excuse me.
Oh, yeah, of course.
She hanging in there, tough on top.
Pete Bush hasn't found the combination yet.
His team trails by two.
That's what happened.
John Forshee, he finished fourth in the Midlan Stand up.
Escape again.
If he can get those hands.
But he'll come into the one.
Looks like they may go to the edge of the mat again.
He gets him turned red.
Yes.
He has to make an effort.
That's a warning against Forshee He has to make an effort to bring Bush down, to get him back to the mat for a trip to the mat.
One, and that is a point because there was a warning earlier.
He had been warned for stalling earlier than first thought back to his feet, which is up against Aries, putting him to the mat with the trip.
And that's what the referee was talking about.
Three, two, one is the score here with a minute and, oh, about a minute and a half left in the second period, £190 Iowa State leading 16 to 14 and a team score.
That may be a surprise to you if you're turning in late.
Good.
Come on down, Red.
I know it's all 40 again.
Trips across the seat.
Get through it.
You got to get him back down to the mat.
Take that initial move away from the john.
He's got to take that first.
Move away from him.
If he's going to keep him from standing up on him.
He's doing a good job of riding now.
He put a lot of pressure.
The upper part of the body.
It's amazing when you distribute that weight and give him a lot, give a lot of pressure.
It's more than £180 worth.
Pete wanted to turn it under there.
I thought better of it.
Come down a minute and 14 seconds remaining in the second period of three down.
John Fauci of Ann Arbor, Michigan, wrestling for Iowa State in his senior year.
He's in the position of advantage.
He's a keeper, that he almost lost the move there at the edge, but he stayed with it.
That's some of the crowd here, Coliseum and that's the Iowa bench on the left.
Jay Robinson on the right hand game.
Come on down, Red Machine takes Bush to the mat again with double riding on top.
He's now got that Cornell right.
Or the one under which is in the inside crotch move to rebut Pete Bush countered Well scissoring those legs and he's back to the down bottom position.
I thought he was going to come to his base here, but of course he's got him off his base role.
Well, he's got that near on by with a lot of pressure.
A while ago, Bush wanted to take that wing and roll, but he didn't have a chance to get up on his face to take it.
You know, a lot of people that don't know wrestling real well dugout don't understand this point of wrestling at 180 pounders out there, wrestling.
But when you get £290 around you with the kind of pressure he's bearing down, it's tough to get out from underneath.
The clock is a factor.
19 seconds left in the second period.
And on top is John force.
He did a good job riding and that's how he distributes his weight real well.
There's what the crowd wanted.
They wanted the stall warning and they kind of a warning against Bush on the bottom.
And there's the end of the second period.
And that was a total ride for John 40.
He now has 3 minutes and 6 seconds of riding time when you're down at least 3 to 1 as he goes to the bottom three, one Iowa State, Bush on top.
That's good.
Come on down by Chris.
He got three early minutes left.
There would be a lot of activity in this match.
Yeah, or she wants to work something slowly.
Here.
He got it.
Bush got that bomb from a locked in there with the wrist control.
He's up a little high, though.
They're turning him by force.
Yet for the one point he's good 4 to 1 now with the potential right in time point.
I don't believe that there's much chance that Bush will take that away.
So for all practical purposes, it's 5 to 1 now taken out of this, and I think each has been one for stalling.
So it's a question of staying active to this was a very big one, very big match.
With 2 minutes and 20 seconds left in this match, there's a lot of a lot of wrestling to be done here.
Pre bush moving nice on that single leg.
He's now it looks like he might get control on it here off the edge and out of bounds and he's been on he too had the two pointer but both boys supporting points one out.
Needless to say the with the wisdom of that call depending on which which team you're rooting for.
Both boys have got to get a lot of offense put together here.
We have about 2 minutes left 4140 and read from Iowa State leaves Bush and black on the nationally first ranked Iowa Hawkeyes.
We've got to get something going here.
We're going to go to the morning for stalling here.
I'm somebody pretty quick.
We got about 146 left.
Yes, you're right, David.
Somebody is going to have to take a chance.
We're going to go we're going to call here pretty quick.
Now it's up to 40 because Bush didn't make a move early.
A couple moves there, but neither one of them were very effective.
They go then at 35, I like to find out it's like 41 of the dozen or under unhooked by Bush and he'd like to put something together with that.
He might get a four or five point move off of it.
So he's got the idea.
I think there's going to be a warning against.
Sure.
And that costs 8.94 to 2 now for she will get it right in time.
Right?
There's no doubt.
But there's a lot of time left yet.
There's over a minute left a minute and 14 seconds.
We're going to have some offense going here by both the wrestlers.
Well, in fact, that's the second time that she's been penalized.
Two point on that single, again, with Payton, If he gets in there deep enough, he could turn it into PIN.
You take it down.
So the next the next one against force.
She is a two pointer.
Well, he's got to get to Marquette.
He's got to go after him.
His best his best point right now is go gets him off it.
There's Pete back in and that single with that high crotch maneuver again.
He may get the trip with it maybe get to four.
She's countering off with it.
But he's in a bad spot right now.
We have 48 seconds left.
In the last period right now, we might get a stalemate position here, perhaps now we're getting some pressure and blocking off on the inside crotch back there.
He could turn it into two.
He could have kept that leg.
I think he lost it all.
Is it still a neutral position?
No points.
It is 4 to 2 in favor, of course.
We have only 27 seconds left.
Let's just call it 5 to 2 because it's a it's a right in time point proportion of you've got to make a shot in there to make a shot of some kind.
He can't run on a real big one, but he was down on that leg that might stave off the consideration for a thought.
He dropped down in there for maybe a duck under attempt there.
15 seconds, 12 seconds long.
Got it.
Fauci You heard the laughter rushing from a tense 5 seconds.
There is a single leg.
That's the one that's going to win the match.
The he wants it 5 to 2.
And now we go to the heavyweight.
It's all up to the heavyweights.
And I'll tell you, we've set the stage here for two to 5 to 2 in favor of 40.
It's Iowa State 19 and Iowa 14.
And you can bet that Lou Banach of Iowa, look at that crowd with a five point cyclone lead is going to go out with one thing in mind, and that's to put Mr. Rosenbauer on his back.
That's what they need.
Now, if they're going to win the big one tonight, if they're going to win the meet, you know, maybe a 2019 score favorite of Iowa, if they get the ball.
Otherwise the number one ranked Hawkeyes will come out of the beat.
Well, now Banach is ranked number three in the country.
He's not a big heavyweight, but he's a tough one, though.
All these folks have got heart.
I'll tell you who.
A two point pickup that's lifting a lot of big man up there when he did that.
You bet.
He got the two points He'd like to go for that ball.
He he's going after it right now.
He's getting all points here.
Near-Fall points.
He pulled one out last year from the University of Iowa at £190.
He and he's trying to do it again.
He's tough.
He's going for the ball.
And that's what you'd expect him to do at this point.
Osunbor has got to get a lot of offense together.
Here's his key right now in this match is to move and move and move.
Yes.
He can't afford to let the Bennett go work on him, which he is doing everything on him right now.
Panic leaves four to nothing.
I don't believe he gave money back points that time.
Look at him.
Work on that.
He's trying to put a cradle on there.
He's going to have to do some wrestling.
If not, he's liable to get himself to the point where he's going to get stalled out of the match.
He's got to make some move move at it.
Falls, Iowa.
Here comes that move right now, pretty fast.
Move on that double leg.
You know, that's the way you'd like to see him.
Now, Banach is again trying to hoist him all the time.
He's looking for an opening there.
And of course, David looking for a role on the move.
But Manek was kind of giving him part of that move so I could see the opening and maybe get him on his back.
Lou Banach against Stamos and Ball.
Banach is seven and two this year, ranked third.
He wrestled 294 part of the season last year, his brother and then went on to win a national championship at 277.
There's the end of the first period.
I'm sure the secret that Iowa State would like to find here for OSU Ball to continue to move on there.
And then, of course, the secret for the Hawks is to help the bat.
It can catch him on his back.
Well, here is the situation.
If if panic wins by a false Iowa will win the match.
That's the only way they can win the meet.
If panic wins by more than 12 points, it's a tie.
19.
All.
If panic wins by from 8 to 11 points, it isn't enough.
And Iowa State would win.
And anything else is in Iowa but Iowa State victory.
So what the Hawkeyes want is a ball.
They want a pin.
And Hosenball did the smart thing there.
As far as town wrestling is concerned.
He felt himself losing that move.
Brother, go to his back.
He went off his face and gave the two point reversal.
He's got the cradle on him right now, though.
The cradle.
He gets hooked up.
It's going to be trouble.
It's going to be doomsday for Iowa State.
If he gets it.
Now, you see Osunbor Ball trying to hold onto that leg.
We've got he's got to somehow get that leg straighten out and release that locked up and he's got it on him.
He's trying to bridge on his elbows.
Now he's going to play.
He's in a tough spot now.
Oh, yeah, He got a hold.
He got turned over on it.
He lost the three pointer, but he saved the ball.
Thus far in this effort.
Mannix wicked tough on him.
He sure is.
And those in ball is going to have to stay in there.
He's going to have to really work.
Lou Banach is calling out the Marines here to get I don't know that role is okay, but for a big man, he could get caught and his back pretty fast there.
And of course, big come out the back door, so to speak, there.
That's what he'd like to do.
And Lou, of course, would like to get him caught on that back.
Nothing happened.
It's a minute, 25 left in the second period, and that leads nine to nothing.
We'd like to get the lift on him and put him to his back here if he can.
But that's a lot of weight to lift.
He's doing a superb job wrestling him with that much weight differential state in Austin.
Ball's got to continue to keep moving the wrestling.
He doesn't want to get thrown out of this match or get caught on his back.
And of course, lose.
Got to keep the pressure on him and keep moving if he wants to get to get him on his back, Manek is severely outweighed here by boy.
He's he doesn't like it hard.
I'll tell you.
He's a toughie.
We've got to get that bar, that end bar there.
Now, if he could get him turn.
He's got 40 some seconds left here.
Yep.
In this period, he'll score.
He could go to the fall in a hurry, but those ball keeps getting that arm free.
And now again, there's that cradle.
If he gets it locked, it could be trouble.
But that was the far side cradle.
And I think Lou decided he better try to come to their side.
That's the one he wants to come back, that he's got to keep those shoulders up that head up.
Don't let him get that lot.
Let's look at the time.
20 seconds left in the second period.
It's nine to nothing.
And with the writing time, it's six.
Actually ten.
There's the Iowa and then the Iowa State coaching ranch.
Great crowd.
And Dillon Coliseum is up there on their feet and there what they're doing is guys giving as much encouragement as possible to Mr. Hosenball.
Stay off your back, Dave.
They got to keep him moving and he's got to get some offense moving.
John Lou Banach trying to win it for the Hawkeyes, as he did last year, the Iowa team coming back from terrible adversity tonight against a really game and vigorous Iowa State cyclones.
There's the end of the second period.
All kinds of writing time for Lou Bennett.
4 minutes, 13 seconds, and of course, leads with a nine Gerald score.
He'd like to take this next 3 minutes and get the ball on his back if he can.
He's wrestling tough on top, you know that.
That's tough wrestling that much weight differential.
He's doing a superb job, but they both involve putting some moves together.
Just being outclassed is what it amounts to.
But he he's trying.
The adversity we were talking about earlier was that Randy Lewis at £134, suffered a dislocated elbow in his match with Jim Gibbons, who was behind by a point.
But it cost Iowa six points and the team scored more than that.
Really?
They thought they might win it.
We got a lot of help at the match Edge, I'm sure, for a lot of people tonight.
Yes, Everybody, the assistant coaches are all up.
You see that?
They're pretty high on him now.
But he's putting everything after him.
He can on the ball, reach him back like that.
He wants to be careful.
He'll liable to get caught on his back off.
Anybody throw the ball.
I'm sure there's the bar one down, but he's got him facing the right way, too.
It's if he's not, if he gets it, turn over.
50 seconds left.
He locked that watch.
The Far side cradle again.
Now, Osunbor has manic in trouble, bad actors in trouble.
And I believe that he might have been better if he'd gone the other way.
Well, he got it, but he got it all on him.
He got to do it again.
Ballpoint now is the crowd noise.
If he if this happened, it could be Iowa State's me.
He could score the ball here without question.
It looks like it's pretty close.
He should just go in there, locked up.
We've got a lot of time.
We have a minute and 17 seconds left.
We should stay right in here on it.
If you buy that bomb, make it the ball.
Now, he's in a pretty good spot with a lot of weight burn down there on Lou Bennett.
Watch that referee's hand.
Watch that.
And it's all a mistake.
Oh, look at that crowd.
Holy mackerel.
There you saw it, folks.
And this crowd is just ecstatic.
Holy cow.
It's an upset.
Iowa State wins and a last minute foul by Dave Hosenball.
He never he never quit without blast for the biggest party and he never quit.
Came back and got the ball.
Holy mackerel.
And the crowd is out there.
Dave Hosenball.
Well, I'll tell you, no matter what kind of a career he has in the past or ahead of him here at Iowa State, that one, he won't forget this error.
He was down, what, nine, ten, 11 point.
He was down 9 to 2.
And Hosenball comes back with a fall and the cyclones in what is always a tremendous meet every year.
Paul what has to be considered a tremendous upset over the Iowa Hawkeyes, who must be said, suffered great adversity tonight because of the injury to their great star, Randy Lewis.
Yes, without question.
Well, that's six points for Iowa State, 2514.
It's going to look like a romp in the box score, but no better than that, of course, rolling really good match up there.
Again, though, Huckabee backed up and stayed right with it.
What needs?
Well, it happened the other way last year, didn't it?
That's right.
25 to 40.
There's a crowd of 14,000 or something somewhere in that area.
They came out here tonight hoping that Iowa State would do well against this number one ranked Iowa team.
And they're going to go home tonight knowing that a great upset occurred.
And in that heavyweight match, nobody had to go all out to him.
He had the big chance to go all out and you've got to give him credit for it.
But there was a big differential in weight and a little bit careless here in one move.
And the ball just kept moving.
He wasn't moving fast.
It took a while, but he kept moving, putting things together.
He got that roll in there and got him on his back with that weight.
Well, you know, Lou realized he had to take chances.
He wasn't got this team wasn't going to win unless he picked opposing ball and it happened the other way around.
Those are the way that was a good mix happened between tonight.
And the sad part of it all is the injury, as you say to Randy Lewis, a key under 34 pounder for Iowa because he's a super wrestler and no one likes to see that type thing.
There's Harold Nichols.
He's happily talking to the press.
Yes, he he had it all along, 25 for the cyclones and 14 for the Hawkeyes.
And what a start to our shipboard wrestling series this year.
I don't think many prognosticators would have indicated that there's some of the crowd.
They aren't leaving yet.
They're very happy about this result.
Obviously, it's largely an Iowa State crowd because it's here at Hilton Coliseum at Iowa State University in Ames.
And there's one left.
They're going to go again, Iowa City.
Yes, there is.
You see some of the happy Iowa State fans and Iowa State wrestlers.
Young man in the blue shirt.
There is an Iowa State wrestler being redshirted, Randy Conrad.
Well, let's go through the mix.

Well, it's a big win for Iowa State over Iowa tonight.
They 25 to 14.
Iowa wins Iowa State wins six of the matches, a fall by Osunbor and the default by Gibbons over Lewis making the big difference.
Iowa wins for they came back but couldn't quite do it.
