Five weeks ago, the number one ranked Iowa State cyclones invaded Carver Hawkeye Arena, hoping to snap the Iowa Hawkeyes 43 meet home winning streak and heading into the 190lbs match, the defending national champions led 15 to 10 and appeared in total control, with Eric Voelker leading Brooks Simpson 6 to 1.
But then Hawk fortunes changed.
Simpson's dramatic pin carried Iowa to a stunning 22 to 15 victory over Iowa State This afternoon, the resurgent Hawkeyes invade Hilton Coliseum, where the cyclones have never lost.
In 24 minutes under head coach Jim Gibbons, it's college wrestling's biggest rematch, Iowa versus Iowa State next to it's college wrestling today from the Hilton Coliseum in Ames.
A crowd expected to be larger than 13,000 on hand to witness the big intrastate rematch between wrestling powers, the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Iowa State Cyclones.
Good afternoon, everybody.
I'm Doug Brown with Tim Johnson.
And we're here for the final college wrestling meet of our season and what we think has been a terrific season of close meet.
And it's Iowa and Iowa State.
Next week we'll have the high school tournament from Des Moines beginning at 630 next Saturday night here on Iowa Public Television and also we'll give you a chance to write to us later on with your comments.
We'll give you an address.
But right now we have to talk about this big, big, big, big, big one with a lot of people here, Iowa and Iowa State between them, these two teams have won the last 13 national championships and the last four dual meets.
Doug, they've split two and two, and the victor has been the home team.
Well, we'll see if that stands up today because Iowa State is at home and it has been a different year for Dan Gable, has been a very different year for Dan Gable.
In the past.
He has had a team that has allowed one or two kids to falter, even in dual meets and in the tournaments.
And it didn't really make any difference.
But this year he needs a consistent performance from 118 through heavyweight to have a winner.
Iowa State lost early in the season to Iowa and United and then also they lost another one a little bit later on.
But it doesn't seem to have upset them now.
They're in very well.
They're in good shape right now.
They have beaten the two teams that are ranked ahead of them and they're all come off a big victory against Penn State.
They're going well, the two coaches of these teams are Jim Gibbons for Iowa State and Dan Gable for the University of Iowa.
They don't like to lose.
Each believes that with consistent performance, they could be undefeated right now and each believes that with consistent performance, they can win national championships this year.
You're going to see some surprises when we show you the lineups in a little while.
Iowa pulled some people down for this meet and you're going to see surprises anyway because we think they're always on, how about £118?
Well, momentum and wrestling is like momentum in any other sport.
It's very important in in wrestling 118 is where it can start.
Steve Martin is expected to carry the Hawkeyes again because last time he won for him.
But he's going up against a new face in Gary McCall, a young man that's come down from 134 and is expected to make the cut or are the cyclones even tougher?
Well, there are tough matches everywhere, as you know, but let's look at them.
Could it happen again at £190?
That was such a big upset the first time.
Well, Brooks Simpson certainly hopes that it can happen again because his pin catapulted the Hawkeyes to victory last time.
But waiting in the wings for another chance is Eric Voelker defending national champion he hasn't lost since their last meeting.
Doug, he's looking for revenge this afternoon.
Okay, let's talk about the keys here.
The crowd always matters.
It matters where you are when the crowd is out there as big as this, What does Iowa have to do in relatively hostile territory?
That's right, Doug.
They're in foreign territory right now.
And you have to come in and you have to win the matches you're expected to win.
That's the key for Dan Gable, where Jim Gibbons is looking, of course, to win the matches is expected to win and then to ride the emotions of this crowd for some upsets.
And there's going to be a lot of emotion here.
Iowa against Iowa State, the big rematch of the year coming up in one minute on Iowa public television.
We're back at the Hilton Coliseum in Ames for the big Iowa at Iowa State showdown.
You're looking at the seven seniors wrestling their last home dual meet for the cyclone.
And there are the lineups across the map from each other here at Hilton Coliseum in Ames.
And I'll tell you, T.J., this kind of stuff is fun.
This is the big one between these two teams.
There is what has happened between Iowa and Iowa State and the other three of the top five, Iowa.
Well, that's what it's all about right there.
Right behind that comparison there is the Hawkeye in the cyclone locked together for battle.
You can see that there's a little difference in what they've done.
You and I, in fact, beat Iowa State.
Iowa beat you and I.
There's a lot of parity throughout the nation right now.
Earlier and Iowa has been a part of all that.
Their sigh the cyclone mascot who has a friendly face and here are some matchups Now look, we'll show you some some differences.
Look, £142.
It's Mike Carpenter came down to 150.
He cut to 150 and he's going up against Joe Jesse.
Now, Rick Novak has come all the way down to 150, and he'll wrestle either Tim Krieger or Murray Anderson.
Krieger hurt his ankle a couple of days ago, and there's been some doubt about kind of shape he was going to be in for this meet at 158 Tate in there for Iowa State Charles Bacon Kelly rematch at 67 and everything to bet on is the same as it was in Iowa City.
The same people.
But the momentum is always important to meet like this and a very large crowd, which we are not quite sure of it yet.
People are still coming in, but I think it's more than 13,000, maybe 40.
Tremendous crowd.
This is fantastic.
At the site of the 1988 national championships in March 17th and 18th and 19th of March.
The referee is Phil Henning of Marshalltown, who was the official the first time around.
And here we go, Gary McCall in the red from Iowa against Steve Martin.
And McCall goes in right away in the leg front.
He's got the ankle trapped there.
He has a good position here.
All he has to do is pop his head out.
He's got to pop his head out right there.
That's what he's going to try to do and cut across to try to get that double leg finished.
Gary McCall has a lot of offense.
Mark kept the whizzer and he kept kept in the situation and there was no takedown.
But McCall went right at him in the in the opening bell, as we've said, Gary McCall's the new face here.
Martin's been the 118 pounder all year for Iowa and one last time in Iowa City against Dan Knight.
But Gary McCall has won the position.
Oh, and here is Mark.
He has McCall on his back.
A big shocker, right in the first period.
It's a five point move.
And that's what we talk about, the big moves in the big matches.
And here we were right at 118.
Now, Steve Martin has just started it off with a stunning move there to gain a five to nothing lead.
So now Iowa State, hoping to win £180, has to fight from deep down those five point moves.
Martin On top, McCall trying to come out the first minute.
His first period is always 3 minutes long, and it's about a minute and a half or a minute and three quarters remaining.
Well, this is where Steve Martin likes to work.
He likes to tilt.
He likes to to control the body and kind of just right behind him like he's doing right there.
No, no, no, no.
He's a floater on top and he likes to catch him here and there.
So Gary McCall has to explode and come out.
He's got it set up again.
Let's see right here.
Look at this.
He catches him under the arm over the shoulder right there for a little bit.
Bottoming Amagansett, a pancake down Iowa, up four by five.
And here is Martin of the Hawkeyes wrestling against Gary McCall.
They're both sophomores in eligibility.
Martin body right on top.
He has at least has the leg in, but he's staying awfully parallel.
I think that Phil Henning is probably going to pull him out of there pretty quick.
Yeah, because really, Gary McCall has no place to go with that knee up like that and Steve Martin parallel.
But it is up to the referee to make sure that he gets out and works it to improve, improve more than a minute of writing time for Mark.
Then at the other end of the right now Martin has to feel that he's got tremendous control and he doesn't want to give it up.
He's in an envious position right here he is actually.
Martin is known as a late in the match wrestler.
Yeah.
Who wears people down as time goes by.
Well, he's you've got to almost feel the adrenalin flowing right inside Martin right here in Gary McCall needs to explode now and get at least one point tries to hit the switch.
That's the second time he's failed at a switch.
But he gets to his feet without hand control, though he needs to fight here and cover those hands.
Then Martin stepping across him, stopping the switches.
And now Martin has McCall right on his face and a lot of writing time in the first minute, 2 minutes and 8 seconds in this first period, he's got five.
That's the remaining time in the period and the clock at the top of the screen, Iowa against Iowa State and the Hawks got a big move first, there's the end of the period, a big period for Steve Martin before he has 2 minutes and 25 seconds of riding time as Jim Gibbons back telling his man, Gary McCall, he's going to have to get on that.
GABLE Well, you know that he couldn't have asked for anything more than right there to have his man get a five point move and to control the first period, Martin starts down and you can look for the roll.
The Granby rolls here.
Didn't have to.
He came to his feet fighting for the hands, but doesn't have them.
So McCall has stopped the roll there, too.
Good.
Good.
Right.
Here they go.
Left.
McCall still controlling on the feet.
He's alive.
You go, McCall.
Want to take him down here shortly or so hand will take it away from him.
Two, three.
Graham, count out of bounds.
Well, he got back about 30 seconds to the right in time, but he's.
McCall did.
But McCall is behind by five points.
Martin got a big movie pancaked McCall in the first minute right here on top He's got to stop that first move.
Yeah well, he's not even going to choose.
He's going to go on his feet.
So it's now 603.
Nobody.
Six.
Oh, yeah.
Steve Martin in the black from the Iowa Hawkeyes, the first of their ten wrestlers in this monster duel.
Meet the big rematch at Hilton Coliseum below.
He just joined us.
We're going to see some changes in the Iowa lineup later on.
CARPENTER down to 42.
Here's McCall again in on the leg.
They're awfully close to the edge of the match, edge of the map.
And Martin is countering well, he decides after three left go back up.
All that did for McCall was take time off the clock that he doesn't really need.
He's he has points to make up and Martin has a little buzzsaw he likes to go tough and then late in the match Beecher but he got 6.5 points in the first period tonight.
Well McCall needs to score some points here.
They're very important points for a couple of reasons to get himself back in the match and to keep from having the danger of a four point victory against him.
Again, McCall is in on the legs.
He was not able to hook the leg with his own leg.
And so we're in that same kind of even up position here between Martin and McCall at the end of the second period, 16 seconds to go.
Steve Martin from the Martin family of Virginia Beach, Granby High School, Virginia, right now, once again, we go straight down now because of the lake right there.
And he's going to fight it, try to finish it off right now.
Sweat the other leg down, McCall, to a better position because he had a pretty good low over the period ends.
There is a one point that period to Martin he leads six to nothing and McCall starts down trailing by six.
Got a long fight back right here.
He's got a big period ahead of him.
I don't think Iowa State expected to have to worry about whether they were going to lose a major decision at this rate.
No, that that's what I meant right here.
But McCall's every point's important because if he gets them going fast enough, Doug, he can get himself back in the match play, run takedown by Martin in the first period because five point moves work both ways tonight and again a switch by McCall.
This one works for a reversal on the escape It's now 7 to 2.
Right now, 7 to 2.
Mark Martin comes into the top position on the face off there.
After McCall shoots and misses, they go back to the center, even up with a minute.
40 seconds left to go.
Well, Gary McCall has to go with his strength right here, which is a low level attack and has got to pull it through.
And he's got three points and a seven before forward.
And Doug, you notice he went low right there.
He needs to stay low and take that.
He needs to get in and not let Steve Martin be where he is as far as stuffing his head down.
He needs to penetrate and come low after the escape.
It's 8 to 4.
He's back in this match.
The Iowa state crowd has come alive now.
Right here is where he needs to come back in right now.
Martin leads by four again.
He was a little far out that time on that shot.
If he would if he'd be smart here.
He has the shots.
He has his set ups.
He just needs to make that penetrations through there.
But no warnings for inactivity yet.
All right.
Here's where Steve Martin's tough, where he stuffs the head and he works that front headlock.
Here he comes.
His speed is now ahead by 10 to 4.
Snap the head down and came around.
It's a six point that the Iowa coaches are yelling at him to let left McCall go try to get a 2.8. lead he has right in time he has a second lead now a six point well six and then the shadow point five and then a shot up.
Oh, that's right.
The escape.
Now, here's where McCall needs to have the offense on because he's not out of it yet.
Yeah, McCall made a shot.
Mark wasn't there of you got to close the gap.
Mark has 29 seconds left to try to get a major decision.
McCall has to do something big now.
And this move that they've been in a situation is really just a time killer.
Martin will stay here till the end of the match.
All Martin needs is a takedown right?
Is that right for a four point victory with this shadow point of writing time?
That's right.
So McCall's points right here are more important than ever.
He does not want to give up points.
Go very important.
Just seconds left.
The big victory for Steve Martin.
And what a nice fight Back by Gary McCall.
After falling behind five to nothing.
But Martin did take it to him early and gives the Iowa Hawkeyes a three to nothing lead.
11 to 5 is the final score.
Martin gets the writing time point and so on.
It is now 310 out there in favor of the Hawkeyes now, but at 126, the Hawks are favored here, too, with Brad Penrith.
Number one ranked two years ago, the national champion last year, the runner up His opponent, though, is Steve Knight, who has been tough this year.
He is 19 and five and ranked number four.
Well, when Steve Knight gets his offense going, he's very, very, very hard to beat and that's what he needs to do, is get his offense going, play his game.
Brad Penrith is better than he's ever been.
I believe.
He's really varied his attack, he's improved his wrestling a lot this year.
He's got an attack both on his feet and on the mat.
Should be a good match.
Up three nothing Iowa over Iowa State.
The big move by Martin put him out ahead of Gary McCall a five point throw to for takedown three for near fall and McCall couldn't come back from it.
Let's go Penrith here 30 for Gibbons against Mercury and at 42 if you weren't with us for the opening show, guess he's going to wrestle Mike Carpenter, who's coming down from 150 for the first time this year to 142.
And we hear that they mean that that's that's the tournament weight.
Well, I think it's going to be a good match because Joe Jesse, it's good to see him consistently in the lineup right now because he's had injury problems in the past.
It's just good to see him in a short Armdrag there by Steve Knight.
But Penrose kept right on moving and he was out of the way with the pace night against it.
Russell Many times in the Iowa wrestling world, Steve Knight was a Hawkeye.
Oh my gosh, a pretty picture perfect high.
God and Knight managed to fight his way out.
Good flurry.
Fred Penrith got it on the leg, cut off very nicely, but Steve Knight was able to get the arm in underneath on an underhook and he was able to counter and he found the edge, did a nice job.
One of the armdrag again there you could sit on penalties left arm.
I see a lot of determination in Knight right now and you see a very steady performer in Penrith.
It's got everybody on the edge of their seats right now in this.
Hylton on Steve Knight likes leg attacks.
He does like an inside trip hook his leg on the inside, but Penrith's not letting him under.
Well you see to fine tune individuals here and you just know that it's just the margin of error is ever so slight.
It's going to be whoever just puts that perfect move together.
John Drag it down by Knight.
Now he has a front headlock and he doesn't mind being here.
He was able to arm drag, almost get the two legs chucked, but Penrith is too solid for him.
A lot of hard work going on him.
A couple of good flurries here.
It's an awfully talented 26 pounders in this country.
And here is Knight Russell.
Look at Penrith and it picked up a terrific counter by Knight.
But what I see here is Steve Knight on his offense.
Even though that was a counter set up, Doug, because he is on his offense, he's not looking to just counter.
Penrith rolls out to the one.
The thing you notice about Mike Bowers, he keeps really good position and even when he was in the middle of those flurries, he was in good position against Penrith.
That's right.
And he was looking for offense and I think your best defense is your is a good options all the way around.
First period is over two one night over Penrith problem.
It's it's right here Penrith is in on the single goes to a double leg right here he's coming across but Knight's able to get the hips out and then that underhook a little pancake action didn't catch him on his back there, but he got the two points and that was hip action.
Knight gets his choice here and he takes down, he starts on the bottom against Penrith, who likes to get those legs in and really put it on here.
He's tough on top.
That won't last long.
Phil Henning with a hand behind the head.
That's a potentially dangerous move.
Well, you know, that's a very big kind of a dangerous move is picking down against Penrith and I think that shows a lot of confidence in Steve Knight of being able to get out.
And so that tells you a little bit of something about his mental attitude right now that he's able to get the leg in on the far side, you have to create a lot.
I think he has power back to the start and the switch by Knight.
Henry's still coming, but there are even one point for Knight who's good.
Explosive action by Steve Knight there.
Heck of a match the crowd has ended up Hylton Coliseum, Iowa won the first match at Leeds in the May three.
Nothing right now.
We're about a minute into the second period.
It's 126.
Knight leads 3 to 1.
You just have a feeling that Steve Knight's had this match on his mind for a while and has been going over and over and over it and almost knows every move that's going to be made in this match because he's been thinking about it for so long.
He decided not to go under against Penrith that time.
Right.
Brad Bennett, Very experienced, very experienced, very solid.
He's just a really good wrestler.
The man in the light there.
That picture in the crowd is Dan Knight, Steve Knight's brother, who just lost the 118 position of his freshman year at Iowa State.
A lot of years ahead of season high.
Cross again and a takedown for Kangra ties the score three three the only turn potentially dangerous.
Three, three.
What a match down.
24 seconds left in the second period right here in a single head to the outside.
Now, as he drives through, he's driving through right here.
He's going to just take the take his leg away and go in for two point takedown by taking the leg away, he went to where Steve had no breaks.
Knight wasn't able to get away before the official called beforehand and called a potentially dangerous situation.
Here is a tip at a tilt by his penalty is trying to get Knight on his back and that's what Penrith wants to do.
He wants to be in this position to get some points to and three points from the tilts.
And Steve Knight does not want to be caught there in right here.
He doesn't want to give it up close to the last period, but riding time almost 50 seconds now for Penrith, the period ends three, three and Penrith goes to the bottom at Penrith.
Steve Knight of Iowa State against Brad Penrith.
That's right, that's my speed.
Dan Knight again, that's the younger brother of Steve Knight.
Forget it.
Tom in Penrith in the down position, Knight up.
Well what it's going to come down to possibly for Steve Knight anyway, he's probably going to hope that it comes down to the take down that wins because he's not going to give up to.
If he can help it, it'll be one or nothing and I doubt it.
It'll be nothing here because Brad Penrith is tough on the bottom.
Also, Penrith is on his feet, but he hasn't been able to fight the hands free.
They're out of bounds and what's galling is what Steve Knight is doing here.
Also, he just called falling, by the way, Tim scuse me, a stall warning against Knight for not returning the man to the mat.
He has taken 20 seconds off the riding time of Penrith, bringing it down to 30 seconds.
Penrith in the down position switches that rolls and is screaming at one point match 4 to 3.
Penrith with one and a half minutes left.
What a match.
Well, obviously from the looks of it, neither of these man is overrated.
Steve Knight is ranked fourth, Brad Penrith is top ranked because he beat Jim Mark the last time they met.
Right here.
The key is Steve for pariah state of Steve Knight's offense.
That's how he started it off.
This is how he's going to finish it.
If he hopes to win, he's got to stay on the offense by Penrith in the black, try to fight his way in, does have a leg.
Now Knight is in a pretty good position.
He kept good position and managed to fight it off and he always lost it.
He almost lost it.
Now they've caught stalling on Penrith at four and really Steve Knight has got to have a low leg attack here to get in this match and and win it with a takedown.
He can't stay on the counter.
We're in the last minute now.
50 seconds between Iowa and Iowa State's 26 pounders.
Penrith and Knight Penrith by one.
Knight hasn't made any moves from under there.
He is either not liking his position or he.
All right.
Now it's down to the nitty gritty.
You see the clock.
It's got to be a shot there.
Phil Then he's got to stop the stalemate.
Now they go and see the clock.
Penrith leads by one now and it's going to end here 4 to 3, Penrith 35.
And it is a good win for Penrith in this crowd here, the emotional crowd and good, stable win there.
Steve Knight fought a really, really hard match right there, I would say to see they might see each other again in the NCAA.
I think so there's the switch by and the roll to get the one point and the victory that was the one that set them apart in the last period and escape they each had to take down.
Penrith had two escapes, Knight had one.
Now we go to 134 with Iowa leading six to nothing.
Here are two All-Americans.
Joe Mercury of Iowa was an all-American at £118 twice.
There were some rumors for a while he was likely to go down to 118 again, but I don't think it's going to happen now.
Well, Steve Martin's wrestling so well right now, and I think Joe Fury would be an awful big one.
18 pounder and give him all a human being if he if he did get down there.
Gibbons ranked third last year.
He finished third in the national tournament.
He's ranked third this year.
Well, two matches in Iowa.
The visitors have come out with two wins and they were big wins back then, Hard fought wins and hard fought matches on both teams.
At 142, we're going to see Mike Carpenter come down a weight where he's been all year and apparently to the weight where he's going to stay on.
Yeah.
I'm Doug Brown with Tim Johnson at Hilton Coliseum on the Iowa Public Television broadcast of the Iowa Iowa State rehab work done on a single leg and on the single.
And he cuts off jockey Buckethead.
But now PR is really very very very clever but those are the Iowa state bachelors up saying that that helped your head a choke hold on but Dave gibbons shows no signs of it.
Gibbons was in on a nice single there and Joe just needs to finish it off there.
Don't take it to the Ed Gibbons on the left in the red bell Kyari on the right take it off.
What happens when every time come up here?
He called timeout Now he wants injury time here you see a coach or something and Gibbons goes over Gibbons and this situation can be coach battle call for the injury time off cannot be and that's why the referee stands with him like Phil Henning is doing with the Iowa arrest.
That's Jim Gibbons, brother Joe and brother Jeff.
And Jeff is the referee on the mat now.
It's a00 first period all the way.
Otherwise they're going the way Gibbons has had a little offensive trouble the last two matches.
He's met some very good people and he hasn't had a takedown and still won the meet, still in the matches.
He hasn't had a proper slate of winning matches.
He's just having a problem with his offense.
And take a look at Gibbons with the front headlock.
Control now flies him down.
Yeah, let's improve guys.
Getting positions and through Mark Gibbons there.
Joe Gibbons on the right, Coach Jim Gibbons on the left in that shot.
Take a draw.
Take it from the four out of bounds.
No score And that's the Iowa bench.
It's Hilton Coliseum, the last minute of the first period of the £134 match.
Iowa has won the first two there.
Oh, that two tough matchup.
Let it back up, buddy.
When you get that here, you go back to two on one.
Belfiore went to work off that cut up the run time doesn't get it up as they go back to the center.
I want to mention, if you might get a pencil, we're going to give you an address you can write.
Can you draw a couple of television comments about our series this year and also about the high school meet that we'll have next Saturday night right here.
Road Show My Fury is in that front headlock position he likes to beat, but he's not turning it into offense right now.
Phil Henning's calling stalemate Sooner or later.
He's got to turn that into offense now.
Now they've got him a lot.
Right leg lead.
You got to go again.
You see Gibbons try to shoot off the leg himself allowing for this front headlock stalemate center both out hill heading center for the center credit Hey the other way certainly there's a shot I think All right there meltdown managed almost to come around but at the end of the period old school time on a field for Iowa trees is down.
Now Byard decides to go on the bottom sharp slope that Gable happy about what's happened so far.
It has to be got his first two McIntosh and now John FDR is up against Jim Gibbons now he's out right away.
He can't get out much faster.
And that that was done in about one second.
A fireman's carry by not throw it.
He has gibbons in some trouble here.
Nothing Nothing's to do for a takedown.
No Nearfall.
That's one.
That's all that is.
The whole guillotine.
That guy has Jim Gibbons into trouble.
Two point NEARFALL already a lot of time left in the first period.
Still need a penny for their first two near-fall stalemate.
Two nearfall and now it's five.
Nothing melts more.
Well, that's because Mercury came in and took the offense to him.
He hit that fireman's carry.
Jeff Gibbons, to his credit, did a nice job of staying out of more trouble than he could have got into there on that fireman's carry almost came out on the outside.
Okay that's just the end of it right there.
And then he turns it into a guillotine and gets two more.
But that start that we didn't see on the replay there was where Joe Mel Carey turned that offense from from nothing behind the arc into a big point move with the start of a fireman's carry take that caution away that was an incorrect I'm going to correct improper position I'm going to correct improper position that was not a false start.
No, I told you that right here.
Joe Mercury hits a fireman's carry.
It's almost a Kelly like deal.
He comes through and now he can't get his head popped out.
And this is to the credit to Jeff Gibbons.
He was able to keep it from being a five point move there.
Now from the the top position mouth you're out again but that's a front headlock from the rear.
Yeah.
You could call Joe Mercury a funky wrestling.
Yeah, he does.
In fact, Dan Gable has said he does a lot of things that nobody else does.
Tom in a stall.
He's not improving here.
So now it's a warning against mercury.
Well, he has over a minutes radio right now.
And so actually he has that what we call a shadow .50 on the scoreboard.
One more point for writing time.
It's starting to make it awful tough on Jeff Gibbons.
And now Byard gets in quickly on the work and in a position that he likes right?
But the voice you hear shouting the loudest on the inside of the mouth here.
And that's all right.
Barry Davis of the Iowa coaching staff and Melgar is really putting on a tough ride here against Jeff Gibbons.
And one, two, three, four stalemate and stalemate.
And it's five nothing in favor of Mount Sharp.
The Hawkeyes have looked really terrific in the first three matches.
Well, they fit both at 118 and out 134.
They've used a couple of big moves to put their people out in front and put them in control.
Now, Gibbons still is not able to get out, and it's a minute and 38 seconds, but right on time in the second period for Gibbons school teachers, then where's the here's the address.
We were telling everybody go right to college wrestling.
Iowa Public Television, Post Office box 64, 50, 64, 50.
Johnston, Iowa.
The zip is 5013150131.
He may have a chance to show you that again later.
Gibbons had his choice.
He starts on the bottom and is now out.
He couldn't do that.
The second gear got up leniently in the third.
Well, there's a little fire in his eye right now.
He's got a pretty good offense right now to get back from.
This man, knocked out, looks comfortable, doesn't do it.
Roll.
And Gibbons is in hot water again, a really troublesome situation.
He's coming through here to try to get two points and he's got to get to two.
If he can pump his head, he's going to get the two off.
He can pop his head right here.
Now.
Now can't get his head out really tight.
That really precarious situation right here because both are close.
But Jeff Gibbons is very close to getting two points there.
While Nilfgaard was on the edge of the map, he knew where he was.
Oh, what a flurry.
I'll tell you, the fans are getting their money's worth today.
This is exciting.
5 to 1 they'll go over Joe kill Jeff Gibbons.
There's a single leg a minute left with a nice counter mouthguard like that.
Head and arm control at front headlock.
He can do a lot of things there, especially He can sit there and run some time on the clock.
Oh, unusual off beat kind of wrestler not year.
And he's been very successful at it in his career.
Now here's a two on one tie up by Gibbons.
He's going to have to something from it happen another situation where I'm sure I wasn't there when about after five one straight no match here was important match because this is one Iowa state was favored.
Yeah they like it especially at home.
All right.
You have a penalty point against top guard and it's five two and it's excellent.
Six two.
And that can't be erased because that writing time.
So he's down by four points.
He needs a five point throw.
Here he is underneath Gibbons needs a throw obviously out penalty against outflow now a four point move would win it for Gibbons, but he has only 15 seconds to do it here.
Not enough time.
And Melgar wins the upset Joe.
No fury with another big move is the upset winner over Jeff Gibbons at 134 And the Hawks lead nine to nothing over the Cyclones.
Well, it was a good match by Neil Curry as far as a smart match.
And I know Jeff Gibbons wants to see that whole match over because I bet he's going to look at it and say, I'm going to wrestle that thing a little bit differently next time.
I'll look at this.
140 to the Iowa wrestler is Mike Carpenter, who cut weight this week to go down to 142.
We hear it's for the tournaments as well.
He's been at 150 and he's been rated all year, but now he's up against Joe Gassy, a veteran.
Mike Carpenter is a redshirt freshman from Middleburg, Ohio.
And we'll see what Dan Gable strategies going to how it's going to pan out.
He has to be happy about what's happened in the first three matches on Iowa State territory.
He's won all three all carpenter in the black against Jesse Joe Garza is also from Ohio.
He's from Worthington, Ohio.
Bishop Waterson High School type game boy in those first three matches, 30 minutes.
A lot of tussles here in the first three.
And the big moves have gone to Iowa.
This is a big move meet so far this year.
We actually haven't seen a lot of those this year.
No, it's been it was exciting there.
And a double leg by carpenter, a solid one.
He doesn't have the points, though, because he still has the title credit deeply.
Now he's going to get up because he has the legs locked that is making Carpenter on a double leg takedown.
He went up.
Partner stays behind all the time as he moves up and the hops do a lot of leading here.
Put him up in Mike Carpenter at 142.
He's deep.
He's in right behind the knees here.
He lifts.
He puts him right down on his hips.
It's almost inevitable that he gets two points.
And he did.
Carpenter tried to get him back as the whistle blower, but guess he was able to come out and it's 2 to 1 carpenter.
He has 21 seconds of riding time.
There's a nice high crotch at him.
Wasn't able to quite complete it by Gezi, 2 to 1.
Carpenter He got the first takedown.
And Iowa has had some big takedown, some like five point moves, five point move by Barton, then a 4.5.
That's good.
And now he's got the single real tight.
He's got a nice lift.
He takes him down.
He got it.
A couple of keys there.
He got in tight.
He was able to lift him all the way off the mat right there for the two.
But the key for Joe Kedzie right here, he's in now.
He him even tighter.
He gets his own hips underneath him.
Look at that and lift him all the way off the ground.
That turns him on the way down and the key to it also is confidence for Joe Gezi.
I think they both have confidence right now.
It's going to be a good match, good three, two gassy leads and sounds like a broken record, a good match.
We're into our fourth good match.
What an excited me as he is tough on top.
He's also tough on the bottom.
Mike Carpenter, a redshirt freshman, a lot of promise for the future and he's only lost six times in his freshman year.
The throw down threw him there out of bounds.
Yes, he leads by one 5 seconds to go in the first period.
So tight and run.
Wait for the whistles refill.
Henning starts him up.
Gassy is trying to stay in control till the end of the period and he does like 10 seconds to right it.
But you know, it's interesting to watch Coach Gable right now because as we said at the beginning of the program, he needs consistency up and down the line.
This is as important to him.
The three matches that was before this one, they mean nothing to him right now because this match is what's important.
He wants the best out of Carpenter because he knows he needs it up and down the line for them to be national champions this year.
Joe Gibbs, he has his choice here and he takes down he's ahead by one point.
Speaking of keys to a national championship, I think I would say he's as good a chance or better than most teams to win one.
And right here could be one of their keys.
And Joe Godsey, well, just flat out for you bet.
I got to make a two point lead for 2 to 1 CARPENTER.
Okay, good.
Stay out in front, but keep in good, solid position there.
Yes.
Working hard to score.
Yes.
He on the red carpet to think about it, but guess he has the front headlock now.
That's what he likes.
He spins around.
He doesn't have a to now he does get well.
He's put the moves on him right now.
He was able to get out in a single the first time that he was able to turn in a front headlock into a spin around for two.
He's very his offense and now he's where he likes to be on the mat.
He goes over trying to get his man on this guy.
But here's a guy for the ball.
Here's where he likes to be.
If he can get conveyed down to the match, he's Ross.
Of course, it's a little exciting for Iowa State fans when they see him go like that because all he has to do is slip and he's on his back.
Yeah, he broke it.
I'm going.
Go for it to fix the food right here on the front headlock again.
He's able to get him out of position, switched directions, go around, flip around for the two because Carpenter has his weight on his hands.
6 to 2 right there.
Two points.
Carpenter starts where he started the period underneath.
I take that back.
Yes, he started underneath.
There's that hoist back over to the take a near fall.
He can get it.
But on the other end he's just keeping Carpenter in trouble a little bit.
That's the important part of that, Right.
I am talking about that gassy working on the head and he's working on right in tied two over a minute 20 of right time to come back again now not back up he's hoping to come down on a near-fall.
Right.
And what he keeps doing is breaking carpenter down off his head partner is able to get back.
But where's his action?
Right here.
He needs to come up more.
He's just base it out and throws and throws he of Iowa State top man to star here and there's a score against Joe Gassy and there was apoplexy in the Iowa State crowd here and there at the end of the second period, 6 to 2 and Evonik went out up, got his coach back, head coach back and says, stay away from him.
Well, I see where Jim Givens is coming from right there.
It seemed like he was trying to get those two points.
And we talked about Carpenter Mason out right there.
But Phil Henning saw it differently.
That Carpenter wants to start on top on their feet here.
Now, Carpenter needs to turn this action into takedowns for him because he's down by four points plus a riding time, five if the big move is going to be Iowa's again, it couldn't come at a better spot, but he's got to create it.
It's not just going to be handed to him.
He's got to create some offense here.
Iowa nine, Iowa State, nothing.
The Hawks won the first three matches.
The last six points have been scored by Joe Kesey, plus the writing time.
He's really controlled the match since the initial takedown, Right.
He now has a warning against it.
However, he can't get cautious up here on his feet to the point where he doesn't do anything.
Carpenter comes in on a double leg of sprawl against it.
By gassy.
He looks to be in pretty good shape here, and he doesn't mind if the clock ticks a little bit.
Know right here.
He wouldn't mind that right there.
And now we've got 55 seconds left in the match up.
He can't quit his own offense, Joe.
Guess he can't hear.
That's key.
We have less than a minute to go when you're ahead of when you're behind there.
I'm guessing here he's up.
He's up.
You know, if he can do what he did last time, it's kind of interesting because he just happened to be where Carpenter came down in that situation.
So what do they let him go and get this 4.8 to 3?
This would make a four point win for Joe if he could take Joe Guernsey, if he can take him down 8 to 3 and a shadow point because he has a minute and 56 seconds of riding time.
We're very close to the end.
As you can see.
But 3 seconds.
And of course, this is a good win by Joe Kesey.
But I think that he has to be feeling real good about that, about that win here.
His final one is going to duel me in Milton, the LSC up here, and it brings Iowa state on the board for the first time.
It's 9 to 3 and we're going to see who comes up here at £150 for Iowa State.
It's got to be Tim Krieger, the reason we were questioning that is because he hurt his ankle his last just a couple of days ago, and there was some question about it.
He's the defending national champion.
He's up against a redshirt freshman, Rick Novak, who's coming all the way down from while he's actually wrestled 67.
Rick Novak of Cedar Rapids Prairie against Tim Krieger.
But we'll have played against Heffernan next to 158 after the intermission.
Iowa State has to have points on their mind.
And I'm not talking about three, Doug, this match.
And at the intermission, we're going to have our traditional musical salute to the coaches and the wrestlers and fans.
A look at the college wrestling memories, too, music that will be coming up after this match.
Krieger of Iowa State goes in on the leg.
It's a little bit too close that time, too far away.
As you say.
Novak is pushing and pushing, pushing, pushing, come off.
He wants to be in tight center.
What's happened so far has been a pleasant surprise.
I mean, not a surprise for Iowa fans.
There's the young fan of Jim Young Band of Trigger because Martin Tanner up and now Peoria, all won for Iowa the first three weeks and now come back to the center.
They've used about a minute Tim Krieger against Rick Rick Novak, Novak of Cedar Rapids, Prairie State champion, his senior year three time state champion from Mason City, Tim Krieger got a couple of talented young men here.
But the experience of Tim Krieger, of course, Iowa State is hoping will make a difference not only in the win, but in the number of points they come up with.
Now, the referee, Phil Henning, is called a stall warning on both men.
On both men.
And you're getting enough gender time.
So if anybody continues to be inactive, it's a point that goes Krieger in on the what usually is a as an ankle pick on the far side he'll pick up Novak Krieger has a pair of a body lock against him and overlook Krieger likes this position.
Now he goes for the head lock for the double trouble and gets the takedown.
Now he's going for more points right where he likes to be.
Now I'm feeling that ankle is hurting him.
Just bad enough that he didn't want to be on his feet any longer and he had to be in.
Here's where he likes to be.
He's using the Bentley.
Kurt, Nobody is injured.
3.0 a two point NEARFALL Not great.
Two out of college stuff.
Listen to this one.
Good stuff.
He screams his name for two.
It's still going to be two and two, I'm to say.
Well, he screamed louder the second time that okay, here, down.
Let's go right here.
Kim Krieger is going to turn this into so much trouble for Novak that he it right here.
Oh, boy, it's looking bad.
And as soon as he slips out, Krieger takes the two points and rolls immediately into two points for Tilt Krieger on top ten can.
Nobody's going to feet when he gets hit between the legs.
He's in pretty good position here.
I'll just put in here.
Watch out for the mechanical block Bruisers on at 84129403 down to the third end of the period for nothing figured.
Here's what's happened The last three times that we've seen these two teams.
Actually, the home team has won five times in a row.
But this is going to be a tough meet for Iowa State to make it the same way because it's 9 to 3.
Iowa just this moment to start the second period, they start second period.
Novak made a nice move, but Krieger is pretty much of an athlete able to counter there and come into a good position here.
Krieger That was nice.
NOVAK Through some often savvy big girls, he's a gutsy kid there.
Krieger laps up again, back up the team.
They started the period on their feet.
That's Jim Gibbons, coach at Iowa State, where again, Arnie changes that kind of a treble situation from the front headlock position over and under into a slip around for two points.
Kovac again goes to his feet, but Krieger has the leg, and he's a ferocious rider.
One of these three or four probably in the country.
Really tough guys on top.
You put him.
David Lean is, I think, gross out in racquetball.
Come on rough hard back right from the start.
Krieger now goes to the mat leg Turk reaches for the leg down behind to see.
And here he trying to hoist his man over That hurt And again, no back injury guys out of pain.
And Phil Hannan calls him off the whole Iowa State where people like him, such as Krieger, have to win.
This is Norman with extra Point.
Well, that's what I've been saying, and that's true right here.
Krieger is pulling that bent legs up.
Now he's going to try to elevate it and take Novak.
And right there you could see Novak's mouth open and screaming right there, and he's saying, I can't stand it anymore.
Well, the rules say you get the two points back, fall back.
I thought he was you know, I know what you're saying, but he got two points for a near fall on a Turk, as they call it.
And he was eight to nothing with 54 seconds to go in the second period.
Krieger on top, ranked first, and he was the national champion last year.
First time for Novak down at 150, as far as I know.
But I think he's more like 150 tiger anyway.
Yeah.
Krieger Getting a bar out kind of hold it than Gable used to put on in the old days now.
And he's looking for two more before this period ends.
And he goes to the mat again.
There's a Turk now he's coming across the that cross.
He's going to try to arch his own back on the leg.
8 seconds back, 8 seconds here.
Attention, Davis.
RC That came before the end of the period.
There's still one second left.
An eight to nothing lead for Krieger over Nova.
You're down.
Let's go.
That's Tim Krieger.
He hasn't lost in a while.
His Kentucky consecutive winning streak is up in the fifties now.
Was sorry stop overseas End of the second period was neutral.
Be able to stay low Actually Krieger was about it decided to stay up in the second period and nobody takes up in the third under happening upside down your lines add to that after 155 match here will present the traditional college wrestling memories feature a musical montage of wrestling people and events that we've seen this year.
Salute to the fans and to the sport and the people who participate.
We'll put together by Pat Rowan.
I was able to view it and it's just a wonderful job.
In wrestling memories from this year, Krieger of Iowa State leads eight to nothing in the second period.
NOVA in the overhead position under the over.
But Krieger likes to lock up here, and he can do a lot of things here.
What he really wants to do is put no back of his back on him, cause right there, handling himself very well.
The takedown goes to Krieger.
He's had three takedowns coming off body lock.
Get it correct.
Keep coming out.
We're in the last minute.
Oh, wow.
Krieger really hasn't had much luck turning him over with that.
Oh, yeah.
Kind of reminds me.
A text copy.
Larry Hooks.
Gary Novak's awfully tough down there, but he's able to stay off his back ground, shot in the 25 seconds left to go.
This would be only a major decision.
That is nothing yet.
Krieger gets the body lock again.
And then let's go back up 10 to 1.
Once again, Krieger will come as a four point win with a three point, of course, and now it's 9 to 7.
If I have to lay my nine for Iowa, they won the first three matches, seven for Iowa State, They won the last two.
And we'll go into those all important upper weight after an intermission at the end of the 155 match.
Right now, Iowa Public Television would like to present for you our traditional musical salute to the coaches, the wrestlers and the fans.
And here's a look at this season's college wrestling memories.
You put it right.
The chute chunk Jumbo.
Oh, I'm kidding.
Don't think so.
Yes.
I'm telling you to watch my.
You did it to me.
Do you have seen nothing?
There's a way to tell you.
Look who's back.
Don't do it.
Oh, like you got to right?
Make people, me or not, The man that tells you when to say to be just a few minutes.
Look who's back.
Used the word tomorrow.
This could be the place.
And you don't like what I'm saying?
You know what?
I'll just jump in.
Yeah, What the hell?
I'm like, Who's bad?
That feature was produced by Pat Rowan of our staff.
Nice work that.
We're at intermission at Hilton Coliseum.
The score is nine four.
Iowa, which won the first three matches and seven four Iowa State, which wasn't last two.
We'll be back with more wrestling coverage after this timeout.
Well, we're back at Hilton Coliseum where Iowa leads Iowa State at the intermission after £150, 9 to 7.
And we're happy to have so many of you with us this afternoon who couldn't be here.
And I expect when you get a look at us here, this is probably what you always suspected, that these guys line up on one side or the other.
The interesting thing about an Iowa Iowa State lead to us is that immediately afterwards we get lots of calls or letters from you saying that we are biased one way or the other, but we like it because we get them both ways.
Well, in fact, you tell me that after the Iowa Iowa State meet one time, you got a call telling you that they thought you were the black and gold.
And 10 minutes later somebody called up and said, How in the world can you be so biased for the cyclones?
Well, let's wake up.
Right?
You're at the time.
It's time to quit it.
There we go.
So we're trying to make this as even as we possibly can.
I think the important thing is, though, this is a tremendous rivalry that we just appreciate for the sport of wrestling.
We hope the viewers do, too.
We hope that you'll stay with us for the second half, too, because Iowa looked so terrific in those first three weeks.
They got to watch.
You have to call an upset at 134 from Gibbons.
Now, if you have something that you would like to say to us or some some suggestions or just comments, right to this address, College Wrestling, Iowa Public Television Post Office Box 6450 Johnston, Iowa ZIP code is 50131 Post Office Box 6450.
Well, that's our college wrestling series this year.
We are ending it up with this Iowa Iowa State meet.
And next week we're going to be here in Iowa broadcasting the national well, it's almost like a national.
It's the state wrestling championships from Veteran's Auditorium in Des Moines.
Again, we'll be starting at 630 with the big grand parade, the grand procession of all the winners.
And then we'll have the live finals starting at 7:00.
Well, and speaking also of something that we've been talking about all year and wishing good luck to, is Tim Armstrong, right?
The 118 pounder out of Drake and out of Fort Dodge.
And we just kind of try to keep the people updated on his progress.
And I didn't get to actually see Tim today, but I was I did stop by the hospital if you're watching Tim to see and just wish you the best of luck and to meet you.
And they said that Tim Armstrong was checked out for the weekend.
I just that's just tremendous that things are going well for you.
And we just wish you the best from Iowa Public Television, the Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines.
And if you're interested in prayers, there's a fund being developed from Drake University for the Tim Astro Medical Bills.
We called Drake University with input for information about that.
Now we go back to it again.
Iowa against Iowa State.
You have to save your Iowa heavily at 177, not heavily to the two top ranked men at heavyweight.
But Iowa State has to come from somewhere or have built it up against John Heffernan who is he's had a something of an up and down season but it's been up lately.
He's looked like the man they hoped he would be.
I'd call him hot.
He's won eight out of the last nine matches last year.
At this time he probably lost that many in a row.
And so he's coming off a big victory against number two ranked Vince Silva at Oklahoma State.
But we've talked about it before.
Bill Tate has all the athletic talent anyone would want.
He can go with anyone if he's on top of his game and he's had a bad knee, see the black Raptor.
So he hasn't been in the lineup lately.
It's his first time back for several weeks, taped against Heffernan at Iowa State against Iowa in Hilton Coliseum, the home of the Cyclones.
Though, where we have a crowd.
Oh, what we know it's over 13,000, probably 14.
We'll have to get an official reading about that.
So if we can two on one tie up by Heffernan, they'll score.
Yeah.
Hey, Iowa.
As we said, the Hawks won the first three ways and a big one was at 134 where.
Belfiore beat Jim Jeff Gibbons So the Cyclops were dominating the dugout, but guess he beat Mike Carpenter.
Wood cut to 142 for Iowa and Tim Kreager got a major decision at £150 over Rick Novak.
It also came down back to their front headlock.
John Heffernan ranked eighth back on the field.
A definite threat to throw take five foot two.
It could move his head.
So here we go again in the center with about a minute and a half to go first period, they'll take his good when he's attacking.
And that's what he needs to do is for the Iowa State cyclones.
He needs to stay on the attack right here.
John Heffernan, he has a good attack, good snatch signal, but he's also very good on his defensive counters.
Nice.
Mary Owens is trying to snap a single line right there.
Looked like he slipped a little bit along, a long shot, five feet.
He had to pull away from it.
Heffernan is, like you said, lanky young man.
They go him up here.
Hey, what happened around the high tape?
Right on the edge of the matter.
But for a second, Tate might have gone to sleep a little bit there.
Heffernan Under the block are double Underhook situation.
There you go, guys.
Get back in the end zone.
There's a warning against Patterson.
Go ahead and say that.
He says it's back to the edge.
Too much on his head.
I think John, the high point of his career so far was last year in the Nationals.
I think.
I don't know how he feels about it, but when him the number one seed Rob for North Carolina in the first round.
Well right here Bill Tate's in a situation where if he doesn't get going, he'll be called now.
And Heffernan has signal that from the outside Kirk comes out from behind.
I'm not sure what the situation is going to be here at the moment.
Not picked out for Heffernan bailed out a little early, but Heffernan was able to get in there and get the two points right before the end.
That's not where Bill Tate wanted to be out there on the attack in the second period, Tate says he will go down straight.
You're down the bottom position.
HEFFERNAN That's his year record, 5897, right?
John Heffernan from North Olmstead, Ohio State.
Edwards Everyone up last year finished sixth in the NCAA tournament.
Get it done, you're going to get it.
Tate is defending very well, not defending him.
Two years ago, he was a great champion.
Great.
Go get it.
And he got it.
He got it.
And the good right position.
So what do you want to do?
Get paid on the bottom.
Now get to his feet.
Not about right up here.
All the loud voices.
You can hear it coming from the Iowa bench.
Yeah, baby.
Barry Davis and Mark Johnson, the two coaches are giving Heffernan a lot of encouragement.
I guess, you to people to be proud of more than 13,000 here at Iowa State Coliseum, Iowa against Iowa State.
Hepburn adults firmly in control.
Well, he's using this leverage.
He's making us take it away.
The position of Bill Tate, though, keeps not getting his hips underneath him and coming up into the explosion, putting back pressure into him like he needs to be.
He's to put more back pressure into him, come up to his feet, clear his hands.
The Iowa coaches, in an explosive manner, get to Mark Johnson here.
Just just back at the whistle happen.
He puts pressure on at the top down there.
Josh Hart to put that in now.
Good to see you.
Your left hand.
They're gonna use American five to go deppen at four firmly in control.
He got a takedown at the beginning of the first at the end of the first period and started on top of the second period and has managed to stay there for 78 seconds.
Happen and roll with tape to try to get some back points.
Now take all Heffernan and out control, although he wasn't able to get a tilt.
We got kind of a situation here that's kind of kind of a paradox.
You've got a person underneath that doesn't seem to be coming up, but the other side of the coin there is how far is Heffernan getting out to the side stay in pretty parallel with with his opponent right here.
And so it creates kind of an uneventful match.
Yes.
End is not his man.
There's a warning against Heffernan talking about is that Heffernan not moving out was the key factor in his call of that stole John Heffernan You see his face 158 pounder, a junior that came just before the end of the second period.
Heffernan has his choice now.
We've had the two key things that's happened in this match right before the end of each period, the takedown in the first period, and now the stall ball at the end of the second game tape starts on top.
Heffernan gets to his feet.
He's out.
Well, it's going to be a right in time work for Heffernan, so it's actually a three point lead.
He has more than 2 minutes of riding time.
Yes.
If you remember the first time around, Bill take beat John Heffernan for to three, but he has to throw and take this time ad Ali spiced up to a takedown followed by an escape.
It's a four point lead, although it says only five two on the board, Heffernan manages to avoid Tate's takedown.
Try out Heffernan five.
Iowa leads 9 to 7 because of the first three matches, first three weights.
Tonight, all went to the Hawkeyes.
Now Tate has a leg left, four very close to the end here.
He is less than a minute away from the end tape.
There's Eddie Banach trying to get through to Tate over the crowd.
Pretty good point you just made.
They're trying to get through to Bill Tate.
Yeah, and I think that's.
Here comes Heffernan and gets the takedown.
Kind of frustrating sometimes.
It looked like Heffernan was able to post his head there and just walk around him.
Bill Tate before more than 13,000 people has never been in this match and Heffernan has controlled it all the way.
I'm sure it's frustrating for the Iowa State fans starting the second period to have this happen, starting the second half of the match, right?
It just doesn't look like Bill Tate's really decided he wanted to win.
This just never really did happen and has almost melted down a struggle and there it ends right in time goes to Heffernan and the Hawks swim 8 to 2 at £158.
John Heffernan.
Eight good hands for John Heffernan.
Nice solid job of workmanship by John.
It was interrupted and now we're going to 167 with the Hawks leading 12 to 7.
They're actually doing better at this point than they were in Iowa City.
167 is a rematch.
It's between Jeff Kelley of Iowa State, sophomore from Britt and Mark Chelmsford of Webster City, just up the road.
A lot of people from Webster City, I'm sure are here for this paper.
Well, there's a couple of young men that want to go.
They want to go take their young kids and, and Charles Vic has a little bit of revenge in his mind, but Kelly is a solid wrestler.
Keeps good position Kelly remember won Iowa City say and tell state gets the first takedown right here He brings him right down to the mat, gets him a little off balance right here, is able to take the underhook duck a little bit and come out for two Kelly against Chelsea Kelly comes up with one leg free now but they're on the edge of the mat.
Kelly of Iowa State Mark Charles, the freshman from Webster City just out of high school.
He did not redshirt this first year as a roll by.
Kelly gets the points up for escape improved again shells making front headlock position control try to work something off it center go back to the center with about 2 minutes left.
We're just ending the first minute of the £167 match.
Don't all go over to Kelly and read the sophomore for Iowa State Charles Vega in black freshman from Iowa at Hilton Coliseum, Iowa public television coverage of the big rematch between the Hawks and the Cyclones, the last duel meet of the year for both teams.
And they'll go to the big A Big Ten's respectable for Iowa State and Iowa National tournament, which will be held here in this very same hall, Hilton Coliseum, a 17th, 18th and 19th of March.
This field head and gets them back together again.
One nothing.
Kelly a21.
Kelly I'm sorry.
Chelsea, first take This belonged to Chelsea.
That's it.
We have a feeling that Charles Big he's he really likes the big matches He's been down a little bit since he lost that last match there.
He's lost a few matches after he lost to Kelly.
He's been hurt, but he's a big match wrestler.
And this is a big match.
And he's almost in front of the home.
Forbes Because Webster said he's just up the road, names, aggressive people didn't have to come far to watch him.
Jeff Kelly A little farther up the road at Britt, he doesn't play.
Oh, well, I didn't like the looks of that knee and tells me he didn't like the feel of it.
Well, it was a good shot by, Kelly, and a good call by Penny, but it showed Kelly that it could get to that outside single.
He made a nice sweep in a low level attack there but potentially dangerous And they go to their feet by 2 to 1 in favor of Charles Big B, the Hawkeye Black left.
45 seconds to go.
First period.
Iowa leads 12 to 7 in the team score again here is Charles big in that underhook position.
Try to reach for that ankle pick on the far side had Kelly off was it off base a little bit there at the end they go back to the center 2 to 1.
Chelsea love to go that stop Scarlett for position be where they want to be They're right near the edge of the match map Now Kelly double leg but was not able to get close 9 seconds to go in the first period Charles Big has been able to create the action right here to get in on what he wants, get in on keeping Jeff Kelly a little bit off balance.
Come to the end of the first period, Charles big leads to the one I was choice.
Charles blake has his choice.
I would choose him down, goes down.
There's the crowd of Hilton Colosseum.
That's from a shot from upstairs.
This is going to be the scene of the biggest national championship tournament in March.
And it's the scene of this dual meet.
The rematch between Iowa and Iowa State this afternoon.
Come on, Charles, But stops on the bottom, leading by one.
And this is important.
That's good time right here for Jeff Kelly on top to establish that right because it is a close match right now and a right could mean the difference in this match.
They're out of bounds now.
But back to the center, neither one has found dominance on the field yet.
Charles Big had the takedown in the first period, got a little riding.
Kelly has whittle it down to 3 seconds worth now as Kelly takes the ankle and back to trip up Charles Vega to keep away but heading justifiably makes him go up higher and not a lot of pressure from the top.
Charles makes a pretty good position here and he's able to clear the hips, put back pressure in, almost turn it into two.
But his knees were out of bounds.
3 to 1.
Charles big time issue right here.
He is able to come and look at he picks the ankle and if he could keep his knees in bounds, but he couldn't if these were out of bounds.
And so they both go up neutral.
It's 3 to 1.
Charles V served second period.
Yeah.
He goes into the double wide and 30 that's about it shot That was explosive.
You saw the opening.
He shot him for the two point takedown.
The whole crowd coming to life got in tight.
He's got the knee behind the knee and he drives through, has both legs and turns the double leg into two points right on the edge of the mat.
It's three three.
Kelly stays on top, Charles, but gets a heel hook.
Probably ought to be able to get out here he does that is seen Jeff Kelly still has control still Philip picking up the riding going down to 30 hours or still heading spots and untied shoe goes to get up there's Royce out there will be up next against Mike van Dale Rice has been unbelievable this year I'll rank first.
He's been ranked first at 67, now 77.
You'll see him next against Iowa State's mike Wednesday at this is a this is a must win for Iowa State.
Oh yeah there's no doubt absolutely has got to be tough even if they do get no points right there at the edge of the mat, Jeff Kelly was able to do a real nice job of countering.
There's no point.
Still ahead, it was all he had two hands, two fingers ready to go, but he was right on top of the call.
And he did a nice job there because there was not too close.
Charles Vick did a nice job of getting in 20 seconds to go in the second period.
Charles, Big leads by one.
Kelly likes to the humble a little bit there on the hands a warning against Chelsea all that activity a period ends and there's a young man that's getting ready for his rematch with Royce Alger of Mike Ventures, Dale Kelly picks down It's four three.
This will be the first time that they've started from the neutral, the referee's position with Charles.
They call it down riding time.
34 seconds for Kelly as Kelly gets to his feet by in the hands, Charles Blake is required to bring him back like that, or at least face the risk of a little penalty because you saw it earlier.
There's Jim Gibbons.
It's getting tough for Iowa State here.
Hawksley 12 to 7 and lead 43 at £167.
Now, Kelly's house over fourth floor.
And this will be the fight the side of that on the field at four four.
Let's set it for you.
Charles Fig has been warned once for inactivity.
Kelly has not been asked Kelly if a single can be too low.
That was too low a headlock by the hammer but by Charles big and they reasons for that far ankle pick again and Kelly knew it was coming and slipped that ankle out.
We have a minute eight to go Dan Gable is on his feet.
Jim Gibbons the Iowa state coaches out the Iowa state crowd giving Jeff Kelly all the time he could give him Kelly wants to create an opening.
He wants to see that right there.
He's working on the head to create the opening for him to slip in on that nice penetration that he has.
Charles Big on the opposite side is shooting from out back to the center again with about 45 seconds to go.
A couple of different styles here going with the last 45 seconds.
The last time they met, Kelly won 42 and it's four four right now.
There's no doubt about the win that's needed by Iowa State right here, because Iowa leads 12 to 7 and the team score at £167 30 seconds.
Now, Kelly has one leg, but he's not close enough.
I that the scoring territory to be able to use it well it comes down to that team series right here he went right up a foot from Charles big face and said this is what you want to do in 20 seconds.
A draw helps.
Kyle Oh, yeah.
There's there's no question Kelly's got to turn these last 10 seconds here.
He's got to go.
And there's the clock.
Well, that just wins it for Kelly if he's able to hold on right here because Phil Henning just called stolen is and that's 1.5 to 4 penalty point for falling is the difference between Kelly and Chelsea at 167 and that Gable's fit to be tied He's talking to Bill Hemmer and Jim Gibbons standing by heels 177 for Iowa, 5 to 4.
Kelly beats Charles de course, now closed the campaign with dial up.
Here's another Big Mac voice out there ranked number one I guess, Mike, that still ranked number four then are still finished third in the Nationals two years ago, redshirted last year when they met in Iowa City after won a major decision 11 to 3 right here, the same place where Charles Big just got called for stalling On the edge is where Venter's they'll have to watch from keep him going or he will too.
He's got to keep out.
You're in the middle right out here.
He was ranked first early in the year at 167 and one at the 77th, ranked first.
I think if he decided to go against Manuel carrying chains and knives, he'd be ranked first because he is a ferocious wrestler.
He's done very well at all levels.
Well, I'll tell you what ventures build to a wrestler that can slow your offense down to take you out of your game.
And that's important for him to do here.
There's a warning against that.
Our staff, but with being called for stalling this early in the match, that hinders him a little bit from taking that slow down game.
Albertans just keep pushing and coming in takes what he can get.
He lost one match this year.
That was to Mike Sheets, who is not in college anymore.
He was a former national champion on the American world.
Teams now and that was in the Midlands.
A minute and a half gone in the first period, got out.
He's got culture and banners down back in the middle counter comes forward, gets the body locked out, likes to work out of this spot.
No points yet and I'll tell you and Arsenal did a nice job of getting out of that turn taking that from almost being more than two points on that body lock right getting away there but that can't run forever.
Yeah.
And our sales are going to have to come away from the edge of the match.
That's right.
Because he's going to get penalized again.
That's exactly right.
There is no score here, although that Arsenal has been warned.
We have less than 50 seconds to go in the first period that our dropped to the leg to get it.
My impression is that they are still wouldn't mind going tied to the mat positions.
Well, I'll tell you what, he just got in on a single.
They almost had to feel like getting in on a tree stump trying to move it.
Underhook position for Alvarez and back to double Underhook right in the center with about 10 seconds to go.
He's got he's got to make some action here that down where he's going to get called and he goes just enough to keep that out.
End of the first period.
Well I think Banner still is satisfied with the score I don't think would like to be in a position that he is and having been warned was yeah but choose his down van goes down if he had to pick between being behind two to nothing or having one warning on him and it being zero zero, I think he picked this up obviously.
Reiss Alger come on top Arsenal rank fourth time in your honor.
Remember in Iowa City that Alford beat Panthers Daley 11 two three.
It comes to the feet, then starts working on the hands.
He didn't happen and he came up.
He thought about one of these close tough matches where no matter which side you're on, you're upset about it.
Well, I'm bringing my hands.
You know, because it's so tight, so close here, and it's just exciting all the way around.
Right.
And Hartsdale, stay down, All right?
Now comes up without the hands, however.
That's right.
Close that time.
The closest thing that I feel had to shake him right there when he was able to get a switch.
But he was outside, out of bounds, got you down facing him.
Both these men are known as good tournament wrestlers.
Well, this is a good test for Royce Alger, too, here in Hilton, where he's going to be in the NCAA.
He's here in front of 14,000 people, which is going to be that way at the NCAA against a good quality wrestler.
And then Hartsdale now Banner still comes up again without the hands switches the other way.
He switched to one side to the other.
Good movement Wednesday, good following by Royce Alger.
He has 44 seconds of riding time and hours, dealt with four technique pads on both knees comes back to the center.
He's on the down position, has been there for the first 44 seven set the score there's no score and hours deals with Warren one Iowa leads Iowa State 12 to 10 with this and two more matches after to go an hour, Dell again on his feet over hook.
This time he reaches back to the wizard to close the system throw it on the out one.
There's a point for an dale on an escape.
It took him a minute and one to get it and Royce our Alger and betters Dale again go to work on the feet and it's Alger stalking Van Hartsdale right here.
Here's the first point for Alger on a penalty against that.
Here's Dale for backing out.
There was a throw, but of course, it was at the edge of the map.
And Jim Gibbons comes out to talk to Phil.
Hit it right here.
It is a nice fit.
Royce knows where he is here on the edge of the mat.
It's like kind of the catch.
You run it real hard.
Catching the foul ball on the first hop didn't do any good.
Then I step in.
Our cell has been warned and penalized once for inactivity.
The fifth time he's done it.
So Outer Circle on that path they'll get the cross and get the takedown.
A double leg and Irish Dale gets the takedown.
Look at this.
Tracing in right here.
And he drives his shoulders right in above the knees right there, double leg for two points.
It's not done very often on Royce, Alger and Vanguard's Dale Rank number four shows his quality, right?
Well, they're only in the second period.
There's a lot of match left here.
They've been stopped out here to ride.
Very important here to escape.
He's going to ride.
Alger says, I want out.
Let's watch it.
And the period ends.
That was important for bad hours.
Dale.
Yeah, Big, big 12 seconds.
If he wins, you can look back to those 12 seconds, Doug, because so often you can go a little lax after a big move that he just had.
Now Royce Alger goes to the bottom.
He's trailing by two, 3 to 1 on a double leg takedown right at the end of the second period by Banner's Dale.
Now just again on his feet against Styles's ride, Hilton Colosseum.
No escape.
No escape.
Hilton Coliseum crowd cheering for Van Dale who killed a good now good match.
So far.
Well, I'll tell you what, the viewers don't need much commentary for me right now.
Now it's straight up to the escape for Alpha three two and that RS.
Dale has been warned for stalling and penalized for stalling.
He has to stay active.
The team score is Iowa 12, Iowa State ten at £177 of help.
Coliseum Alger so unusual.
He's gone to the third period without a takedown.
The only takedown the scored in the second period by Van Arsdale seven two on one tie up the Russian tie by van RS Dale Uphill there's another penalty point against man RS dale to tie the match at three three he's going in Well Van Aristide's upset about the call but he can't be, you know, he can't sit there and think about right now Iowa State's assistant coaches are are anxious to get him back off the mat again before the team loses a fight.
But I'll throw it on the double leg and he scores the leads 5 to 3 in 5 to 4.
After the escape, Alger leads by four by one, with 45 seconds to go.
Well, the match Ben Carson has already shown that he can take him down.
The match is his.
If he has a takedown right here, both wrestlers have an equal chance right now to win this match.
Elkins in Nice double leg.
Head to the outside.
Changes the angle.
Nice for two points and it's 5 to 4 now after the escape and our state of Iowa State against the number one ranked man voice out there who is really tough that arms they're reaching for the legs from the tie position going both ways 24 seconds to go and the importance of this match to the team score is obvious by only 10 seconds to go and 10 seconds to go at Hartsdale against Alger.
Both teams have their partizans on their feet and Hartsdale tries to go under.
Can't.
And it's got to end here with Royce Alger, the winner 5 to 4 over like Wednesday.
No right in time.
Good match for both wrestlers and the penalty points really hurt there with the other way in that match Gibson is 5 to 4 Alger overpowers Dale and now it's 15 to 10 coming to 190.
This is the rematch with the one that turned it all around in Iowa City between Watson But when they came to this Iowa, Iowa State led 15 to 10.
And here it's Iowa leading 15 to 10.
And Iowa is favored definitely at heavyweight Eric Voelker ranked second, the defending national champion against Brooks Simpson, that stunning pin that Simpson got in the first meet when Voelker was leading something like 6 to 1 center is fresh eyes and everybody's memory is going to be something that everybody in the Brooks Simpson fan Club is going to remember.
£190 at Hilton Coliseum.
The Hawkeyes move the Cyclones 15 to 10 with two matches to go this one.
And then the heavyweight match between siblings.
Here comes Boca reacted very quickly.
He's ahead to the basket on a counter.
Well, he went ahead Coker went ahead 6 to 1 in the last meeting between the two before the turn of events.
Eric Baker, the defending national champion, he just pushed the offense.
Nothing was he has been top ever since that match.
He was tough before it.
He was tough in it.
He just got to a point where he had never been before.
That's right.
That's right.
Brooks Simpson from Newton, Iowa, sophomore snow both up minute 43 to go in the first period 3 minutes long.
Simpson against Voelker.
All right, big crowd.
Oh, it's not a full house.
There are some empty seats up at the end and go to now they say Max is what seven 4545 we're close to 14 complete.
Eric Bowker leads Brooks Simpson 2 to 1, but Iowa has a 15 to 10 lead.
This is the largest crowd since 1983 for a wrestling match here at Hilton at Iowa State, right here.
And they're getting their money's worth.
But while we looked at Iowa with a new lineup tonight, they brought Carpenter down to 42.
They've got Novak down to 50, lost both matches it all and Iowa State Brock McCall down to 118 and lost out.
No, no.
So what's it tell us about the matches?
Again, as we were saying earlier, it's the ones have to win, but you don't win that make all the difference in the world.
At 34, Joe Belfiore put on a really good match against Jeff Gibbons and beat up.
That was where things turn.
And then Iowa won two matches that they lost at Iowa City, right?
Heffernan beat Tate this time.
Well, I guess at 167 that wasn't true.
Kelly did beat Chelsea again, but there were two matches there.
They got that power at 190 and Iowa State would like to get one back here.
Sid Langer against Coke at heavyweight coming up next Just hang on Bill head involves a double stall one both ways Voelker double leg that's his tough food.
Oh boy.
He drives through like a freight train.
He's got to cover himself, though, right here because Simpson is trying to slide by right here.
But if Faulkner can get his shoulders into the hips right here and drive through, he'll get his two points.
He's got to hang on to that ankle and drive his shoulders through right here to Ali and his two points.
And right at the end of the period, well, he did a nice job of keeping his shoulders in tight on the hips right there, keeping the ankle and covering very well.
And there was no chance for Simpson to escape.
So now we're four one.
Simpson goes to the bottom remember in the Iowa City that the pin came when Brooks Simpson rolled did an outside roll side roll against Voelker.
After a little flurry, this game goes up.
Simpson's out escape makes it four to third period will be Volcker's choice.
Still a lot to be decided here because it's only 4 to 2.
The difference of a takedown.
And Voelker only has 20 seconds of riding time now.
Brooks Simpson in the black, you Voelker calls time out his headgear troubling in some way.
Now, the Iowa coaching staff thinks that Simpson has a lot of talent, that he could be an outstanding wrestler.
He still makes mistakes a little bit.
Well, the problem the problem is he's been in and out of the lineup so much, his injuries, skin problems, things that kept him out of this room.
It's it's not even so much conditioning as his timing.
His timing isn't quite there because he hasn't had three or four straight weeks in the practice room, 15 to 10.
Well, there's no doubt here at Iowa State, the Cyclones have to win both these last two matches.
They have to win both because otherwise Iowa can protect its 15 to 10 lead.
Walker is favored even though Simpson got that shocking win in Iowa City.
But similar to his favorite of heavyweights for Iowa against Andy Coby Pinto this year.
Earlier he'll come by Volker.
He didn't have enough ballast for a change in going on, but Booker had the presence of mind to drop down to the ankle and control the ankle as he went out of bounds in order to Vocalese.
This match has a lot to go.
Still, still a match, but Brooks Simpson, the high school champion his senior year, a 35 at old that last year that had inside your head.
We're about 15 seconds from the end of the second period Walker by two and the no takedowns here Walker got a pair up in the first period.
Now the right here he needs to cut off or come up and do a single.
They got there.
What he did was cast over did a nice job of casting over for the two points right at the end.
Now he's done that twice right at the end of the period, Booker's been able to turn his offense into two points at the buzzer 6 to 2 favorite Bulger.
And there here what is on the line the 24 match home straight that Jim Gibbons has he's never lost here.
There's never lost but Iowa leads by five with this match.
Voelker and Simpson, the heavyweight match between Cope and Sterling are yet to be decided.
Nelson still has the delay again, and he's got Walker down flat three down.
First wall calls a stalemate.
So now there's Jim Gibbons.
He went up to look at Bulger.
How are you feeling?
Booker wants to keep the legs out right here.
He wants to clear those hands, keep the legs out right there.
By slipping that leg down, he was able to this time, now he's able to come kept ankle turning it into two.
He got one call at a reversal.
Now all of a sudden Booker might be thinking about the extra point which all he has to do is right out and he's got a four point win 8 to 2 Walker right here.
He's able to watch here.
He catches the ankle, slips out for one, turns it back in, drills through for an ankle pick, picks up the two at the edge of the mat for a one and two.
So he did call it an escape and a takedown and a takedown but maybe might have said it was out of bounds.
Right.
There was enough reaction time.
Now nine becomes that double.
He's got to get this head one side in the other here and right through lets go of it.
9 to 3 in favor of Booker.
So with 45 seconds to go in the match that's Mark Sinclair played football at Iowa.
He was the starting center for several years when his eligibility for football ran out he still could wrestle.
This is he's doing the going full time for this year and he's ranked sixth there is Booker putting it almost on his back and you know, he got it again from that ankle pick.
He's able to control those ankles real nicely.
The ground blocking here is what the now Booker has been penalized for lock hands.
I think they were going I think Booker thinks he was had him in a pinning combination for position.
I think he picks the ankle he comes through right here.
And Phil Hennings says he must have had his hands together in an illegal locking hands at one point.
And it's important because that takes away the eight point difference.
And Voelker has to put Simpson on his back in order to get up.
Yeah, because he's not going to get right in time for the 11 to 4 Bulger.
And there it is.
Well, no writing card Oh, it's a seven point for poker.
It comes down to heavyweight it does 13 for Iowa State, 15 for Iowa come to heavyweight where Iowa is favored.
Well, that was a good job by Eric Coker.
There was no doubt about who had control of that match the entire time.
And here comes every cop out for Iowa State to wrestle against.
Mark Schillinger settling our pin pinned his man at the in Iowa City.
Phil Henning is going out in the center again to set it up.
It comes down to heavyweight one more time.
Abby cope in the red for Iowa State.
Mark Sidelinger for Iowa in the black.
He's lost by fall to Sinclair twice this year, actually.
And there is a little look coach there had a little short drag there almost to a single leg takedown.
Yes.
They met twice this year and settling pinned couple of times surprises do happen.
Yes, they do.
And it will take one for Iowa State to protect Jim Gibbons undefeated record at home, the Coliseum, because the Hawks lead here 15 to 30.
We got a second here.
We'll run quickly through those matches again, settling out of Iowa, black Andy Cole Sinclair has a little more weight that Coke was about to throw.
And Sinclair's sin lingers state titles.
We're at super heavyweight in the three times, in fact, the three time high school state champion in Charles City, Iowa.
They've used a minute town here at the heavyweight Hilton Coliseum, our Iowa public television broadcast of rematch between what are the teams that are now ranked third and fourth in the country.
But I'll bet you that they could be higher than that.
Get to the national tournament, which is going to be held here at Hilton Coliseum.
Well, I see a dogfight coming down in a few weeks at that train.
Short drag by coach.
They're awfully close to the outside.
And coach, he goes out.
Good action.
Good action by Andy Cope.
Yeah, that's Jim Gibbons.
His team trails by two.
A big order here for Andy Cope.
Oh well there's not a lot of people here that expect Andy Cope to pull it off and it's just might be the right atmosphere for this young man to to rise to new heights.
I'm sure he has it on his mind right now.
He's going to go all out.
He's made a couple of really nice shots every time they go out of bounds.
And I think we'll call him back to the center.
Both coaching staff get to their feet, know what they hope?
Is they the pertinent remark is we're making those shots from the inside to the out.
But Sinclair has each time been out of bounds.
So in.
Yes, they don't help at 30 seconds to go.
In the first period, Cope has made the offensive move three or four and about it to zero right now.
And it has pretty been pretty much a lean and pushed by Mark Sullivan.
Go right here.
And the thing is Mark Sidelinger has the offense if he wants to use it now, there is a penalty against Pope.
That's what happens when he's he comes back to the edge.
Just made us right this made me look kind of bad there because it really appeared that up to that time Pope had been putting the offense on send longer, but he backed up at the wrong time.
He didn't come in and now he's done.
What he's going to have to do here, obviously, is keep his head.
Yeah, right.
He just had a knock coming out.
Zero zero right here.
Yeah.
You know, a one point win wins the meet for Iowa State, so they're going to go on their feet.
Coach gets his choice and he wants to stay up and try for a takedown.
There were takedowns in the first period.
It was Coach Choi's 1513.
The Hawkeyes lead over the Cyclones, and Iowa won the first three matches at 118.
Martin beat McCall 11 to 5 on a big move.
He got a five point throw in the first period.
Here's a stalling ball against cylinder.
So the reason for that.
Then Penrith won a whale of a match against Knight for two three at 134.
This had to be considered an upset.
Joe McCarthy beat Jim Gebhardt, Jeff Gibbons 6 to 3 and he had a big hole, a big throw at 142 Joe Gassy beat Mike Carpenter, who cut 923 at 150.
Tim Krieger had no trouble with Rick Novack.
It was 11 to 1.
Then at 158, Heffernan beat Tate 8 to 2, a reversal of their last match here at Sinclair and Pope, going at it in the middle with no score.
Each man has been warned.
Well, the strategy here, Doug, is one of two things for Randy Coke.
He's either got to push and put the offense on so that the stalling call is on unsettling linger or he's going to have to score takedown because Dillinger will takedown and and any coke will not be able to ride him last period so something's got to happen here either through stalling penalty points or a takedown for Andy Coke and also he left off at 167 where Jeff Kelley on a stall call at the end, defeated.
BART tells me goodbye Iowa and a whale of a match at 77.
Ilja beat Mike Wednesday with the help of a couple of penalty points.
That one was much closer, and I think a lot of people expected it would be dismissed.
And Bulker beat Simpson 11 the floor at 190.
So come to here no score heavyweight match second period.
Each man has been warned.
A Coke took up on his feet.
He decided he could get a takedo But he hasn't been able to get the takedowns and I don't think he will because there are only 14 seconds to go in the second period.
That's the Iowa bench, Dan Gable and Barry Davis.
It's got to be kind of frustrating, I think, for Dan Gable here, because Dillinger probably has a lot more offense and he's showing here Andy Cope is wrestling a very smart match, him playing the sides right there.
And he's done a nice job mixing it up with his short drags.
That's the end of the period he's keeping his head.
We want to say thank you to a lot of people before our college wrestling season at the University of Iowa Bump Elliott, the athletic director, and Larry Bruner, assistant A.D. Rick Klatt, director of Promotions Phil Hatty and Steve Mile, college Sports Information Dell Jerky, the facilities manager at Carver Hawkeye, and Jim and Dan Gable, the coaches and his staff.
That's from Iowa.
You saw Dillinger escape and that was that was expected.
And he's ahead now.
One, two, nothing on the escape.
So now coach does have to take him down.
I also want to thank from Iowa State Max Urich, the assistant, the athletic director, and Dave Fox assistant, A.D. Tom Kershaw.
That's such a good job of sports information for wrestling.
Randy Baumeister, technical director and Jim Gibbons and his coaching staff.
And for you and I too, we saw earlier in the year Bob Bowles, the athletic director, Roger Crimmins, Sports Information Park, linking the dome manager, Dave Causey, assistant dome manager, and Don Briggs coaches and staff.
We want to thank also all of you who watched and people have written to us with comments and we hope to be back with you again next year.
Well, you saw Sterling warning against both of the points for both fell a little drag there by coach not able to get in tight for anything.
Right there.
Coming down with a minute left, Doug, we've got a one point match, 2 to 1 settling or leading and the Iowa hopes resting on that one point.
It's 2 to 1 in favor of settling Earth.
Looking for the right position.
He has not been able to find it.
He has taken a couple of takedown tries at the edge of the map, but each time Sinclair was out of bounds and Pope is not in really good position for this to happen right now.
It's happening right on the edge of the mat.
38 seconds to go.
If court were to get a takedown, it wouldn't be he would have to hold similar.
He can't write an escape in a draw would mean Iowa won the meet.
They lead by a 15 to 13 well we'll let these last 15 seconds right here Here we go There's a penalty against settling earth.
Now, he doesn't have to hold him if he takes him down, but it's 2 to 13 seconds to go.
Pope is going to have to take a shot and it's over.
It's a draw at heavyweight.
I think that's the sixth draw that Andy Cope has had.
11, but Iowa was leading coming into the last match.
And so with two for each team goes home, the victor.
That's the first time that Jim Gibbons has ever lost in Hilton Coliseum, 17 to 15.
What a heck here against Iowa dog.
It was just fantastic year, wasn't it?
And both teams will be ready for the Nationals.
That ought to just be something.
Oh, it's going to be great right here in Hilton.
For all the Iowa fans, so many good teams.
Many good teams.
Enjoyed being with you.
