We're here back for the 22nd season of college w on Iowa Public Television.

And this year, we have nine great meets for you And Tim and I are especially enj being here for this first one, the classic Iowa against Iowa St It's always a great way to start And speaking of starting, we hav Zaleski starting his first year as acting head coach, one of the great wrestlers in the history of Iowa, two time champion from Cedar Rapids, Prai three time NCAA champion from Io and now acting head coach Jim Zaleski would like nothing better than to start a string of team championship.

Why is Jim Zaleski the head coac Because Dan Gable has stepped aside for a year.

He said Enough is enough, as you heard, to consider his fu Dan Gable, a legend in his own t Many legacies he has left.

And one of the legacies that Dan Gable has left is it seems like the Iowa Hawkey never were re were re building, but always rel This year is no different for national champions.

Coming back to the starting line we have Mark Ironside, the Human buzzsaw, Jeff McGuinne We have Joe Williams going for h NCAA title and lead for heart.

Only a junior going for his seco But as good as they are to him, State came within an eyelash of beating him last year in the dual meet here.

So how close is Iowa State?

Bobby Douglas thinks they're almost th Well, Bobby Douglas is a key.

He's a man with a plan In his si at Iowa State, Everybody in the wrestling world is lookin at Iowa State as the team of the They said this is a team that's about ready to unfold.

Bobby Douglas head, the top recr class in the nation last year.

But they're all redshirting but one you will see is Dwight H fifth year senior from Latin Okl a three time all-American Dwight coming off a big win against the number one ranked and defending champion Eric Guerrero from Oklahoma Stat But he's complemented also by Cody Sanderson.

Cody Sanderson, a strong and goo pounder and Trent Penick.

He's been around these big match with Iowa State and going up against his old nem West Hand.

You know, the ironic thing is if he did one of those wrestling at 18 or a heavyweight had won last ye in that dome in Iowa State would have beaten Iowa.

Well, yes.

And a key tonight is those two need to win.

Iowa State needs to win three that they are favored in.

They need to find two others and they need to keep those four national champions from scoring too many points.

Let's show you who is on this meeting tonight.

Believe starting lineups for these teams And this is the list we have for you from 118 on through heavywei The weigh ins are generally set that you'll have one man at each But I think Iowa State has wrest as a weight in two with one of the upper weights.

Gillis and Koba weighed in for I at 150.

It'll probably be Gillis in the upper weights 158 to on to heavyweight Dekker and both weighing in on the 158 for And there are two weigh ins 177 for each team there are the lineups ready to g Tim Well, it's exciting, like you said, to have this classic matchup between Iowa and Iowa State with the series being 42 to 14 in favor of Iowa.

The referee is Jim Ramirez from our Kansas City, Kansas.

He was here last year for this meet in Ames.

He's one of the very respected referees around the nation.

Does the National duals, the NCA and and here he is tonight to do this big meet between Iowa State and I was one many of the last they haven' since the the last close one before that o on the end of the 1997 season.

And it was in 1994.

It was a very close meet, too.

But Iowa did well by being ahead a good deal along th But it's many years since they've been really even u And Bobby Douglas is looking to go around the corner when it But this Iowa team has no intent Jim Gillespie has no intention of letting it happen.

Iowa looks a strong as ever this It's a new people from both side Last year, Cody Sanderson was proud of that man right there while sophomore now on against him, Eric Jergens one of the best high school wres ever to come out of the state of And you get to see him in his bi Iowa State debut for Cody Sanderson against Eric Jergens.

Eric Jergens, one of three four state champions on the Iowa team He was undefeated from McCook at He's in the same position Cody Sanderson was last year, going out against Jesse Whitmer.

Redshirt freshman inexperience still has to prove himself in the big, tough matches.

Like right now.

Tie it up out front.

After that, Jergens and Sanderso Iowa, Black and the Cyclone Red basic colors on the edge of the You see Sanderson working off after two It's interesting.

Sanders is not known as a big te as he, but he's solid everywhere Very pushing.

Well, he is.

He's.

He's solid as far as he's strong for his weight class and he's good from all three positio but they're working very hard to make him a better attacker of the legs lower and his motion lowering hi and getting underneath.

But right there now, he's got to trying to do a little short offe here in the shot here.

And we're opening at £118 Iowa against Iowa State for the 98 college wrestling season on Iowa public television.

Let's go first.

First period is 3 minutes long, as you know.

The next two are 2 minutes each It was the first touch of a leg, I think later man Jergens reache and just kind of patted the five SANDERS But nobody's scoring.

Well, the key for Sanderson here to beating Jergens is he's got to make this a physical, wide open match.

He can't let Jergens slow it dow and make it his way of wrestling He needs to keep it wide open if he has the experience on his SANDERS He does.

And out of bounds.

Jim Ramirez brings him back.

And there's Tom Brandes on the I bench with Jim Zaleski.

Terry to turn up.

Terry That's Terry.

He's all mixed up for him.

I don't think anybody minds by M the brands of a lot of quick loo they're very still difficult to in Bobby Douglas's words he says that Sanderson really ne to make sure we burn enough bull to make sure we have to have a chance to win.

And in other words, keep the movement up, take the s He's in that two on one and he looks like he wants to us upper body moves against Jergens But he hasn't been able to move anything that Jergens hasn't eit Yeah, we saw that big headlock l that Sanderson has, and he can be very, very dangero But he also can make mistakes like he did in the last meet when he kind of bailed out on a and the end of the match that gave the match to Whitmer.

But he's a year older, a year smarter, a double stall warning given by Jim Romero, who says this is interesting, yo but you better do something diff So first reached down by Sanders and still so offense.

Yeah we saw those double stalls last year by this referee and it just seems to me that somebody has got to be stalling more than the other fou use it out of bounds.

In the first period here at Iowa State to two on one on the other.

Jergens in the underhook.

They're not going to score in this period.

Actually, that's where who likes to be alo But the advantage right here would be I'd say Jergens is keep you know, even and he's the one stepping out against this big time competitio for the first time.

We'll find out now get the chanc to kind of see we get the first Before the meet started.

Sanders had a choice there.

He decided to defer.

So Jergens picks down to start the second p and Jergens will go up in the th as Anderson, a pretty tough ride You know that tight waist puts a lot of pressure on his ma but Jergens finally gets to his two and five.

And this is where Sanders needs to stay on his fee and follow him down and not go d in the knees as Jim's last week.

Tell him to come up, catch those get your hips underneath you.

Now, this is one loss, Anderson, rated seventh in the country is favored slightly over this ve very talented.

All right.

Jergens so Iowa State figures this is one they absolutely have So you notice Anderson's knee right back there.

He jams it up to the rear side of of Jergens right there, stays out on his to and puts a lot of pressure.

He's keeping a lot of pressure right there on Jergens.

If you're down on the mat, you can't get out.

It's got to get your hips undern just like he did right there.

But see how Sanderson comes back putting the pressure on head dow And there he is.

He's up on his As much as he is anything.

And he's not down on the mat and freshman to have underneath it a Coaches talk about it.

The really good ones aren't used to being on the bott and they don't sometimes have th philosophy about how to get out of here.

Jim Gillespie saying how to teac Take the same way you do on your You're going to have to try some five or six times before it work Go on the bottom.

He was trying something, wanted to get a little discourag Freshman think that way.

And Jergens is out after a minute and 23 seconds of right So it's a potential point in the for Sanderson but a point on the board for Jer Right now, Jergens looks lean, but that's a heat he doesn't nee He's not strong.

He's got a lean strength to him.

And he does a good job of weight because he's not a small 118 pou Sanderson, as I said, is a strong 18 pounde That's going to be two that see each other a lot throughout the High school Jergens tying a shoe come on laced with 17 seconds left in the two second period one to nothing until you're a Jergens Sanderson has potential riding t They went to the first period without a score Sanderson and Jergens with 4 sec left.

Now, just the very end of the second period.

Nothing has happened on him at a He's going to have to come to the lot of the success that Bobby Douglas has had it because of Tom Ortiz right there He came from he was an several t all-American at Arizona State and came with him when Bobby came here at Iowa Sta great recruiter and has been a p of building this tradition that Bobby Douglas has built her And then, of course, Chris Bowen in between them, the national ch good that came out of the in the South very fast.

And he still has that line in ti Potential point is a minute and 17 seconds of writing time.

Now he's got to keep it wide ope We've got to make it physical.

He can't stand around.

He can't give Jergens one shot and able to win this thing witho putting the pressure on him.

He's got to move his feet, got t the jergens right down the leg.

But it was while we were both ou of bounds, nothing is going to h there.

Sanderson Cody Sanderson, who is the smallest and the oldest of the three Sand brothers on this Iowa State team you're going to see two of them and we'll get used to that name, but they're going to be around for a few years.

Jergens, of course, has a brother himself on the Iow Mark is a redshirt freshman and freshman, real freshman on the t Yeah, redshirting this year as a fresh No score right there.

Jergens is backing off right the And as we've seen, Jergens is hard to get into.

He's hard to penetrate on the fe and get in.

He works at tie ups very well and has done so against Sanderso but is backing off and he's going to get hit for st if he doesn't come forward 1 to 1.

Sanderson has potential running Neither one of them has really m a serious, really serious all out attempt at a takedown.

There is Jorgensen on the lane n Sanderson can't go down.

Oh, he called him out, and that Was Jergens out?

That's the key right here.

At any rate, Sanderson gets a ne after that one.

The one he's got to keep it wide He can't let Jergens in on him r there.

He's got to keep the pressure on He doesn't dare get closer stall You know what?

Even enough stands to win at the to say 1 to 1.

But you don't have to be active to do it.

Jergens a lot of talent isn't going to let that happen.

Like you said, Sanderson does have waitin and he will win this match if it this without any stalling calls.

With only 20 seconds left in a d Again, again, the two on one set up for Sander He's been here before.

And remember, he's he's now he's thinking, don't do anything Last year I was right here.

All I had to do, like, hold on, That's ready That's because he doesn't want to get called for stalling.

Oh, is it on leg?

Not very good move And it's over right in time was the difference And of course in the uneventful combinations on that he was too lightweights on Iowa and Iowa St so the cyclones jump off Louis Anderson got what he went out to get a Jergens established him He said I'm in there.

It's just that I'm going to work hard on this and come back next He's for real.

So it's Iowa State three and Iow Nothing after one time to time.

I'm glad to be able to see somebody coming in late.

We'll see some rhythm because we at the bottom in 2018.

But this year here is Iowa State's all-American Dwight Hens against another Iowa freshman from Osage, Doug Schwab.

But not just an ordinary freshma who, well, most people that wrestle for eit Iowa State or Iowa are not ordin And he's very talented.

But Bob is very skilled and he l like he'll be very good down the But it's usually you really have go out and prove yourself at thi That's where he is.

He's had a good start, but he's To Jadon from Wisconsin, who's ranked number two in a cross wid at the top, who is a really firs wrestler, only 3 to 1 workout.

And as we talked about in the op Dwight Hanson, he's coming off a big wi against number one ranked Guerre He won the national championship for Oklahoma State last year.

Harder.

That's the thing that people always talk about when th about Dwight Hinson is he likes to keep the match close He doesn't sometimes get ahead of the way is the good or the weaker wrestlers Very far because he keeps the lowest scor He doesn't do a lot of shooting I think I would like to get him some kind of a shooting match if they could get him behind.

Well, but he's so defensive because he had Dwight Henson is known for a controlled He doesn't take much risk.

He's trying to pull swag our back line here with by staying on the mat his knees He'd like to get off his knees and be able to pull him back.

Henson would see did he get him and get behind the knee.

Right.

Then switch off how easy decent shape and stance he's got coming down the knee.

When Henson gets a takedown, tha because he is hard to come back We've seen it happen a few times but Dwight Henson, once he gets he's he's he doesn't do a lot so but he has a high percentage when he does attack right there one takedown and he's got outsta defense gets right back into it guys and run very good defense and he does not like to be and he likes to be ahead as everybody does.

But people really hate to be beh by him in a close match because he's so hard to penetrat 50 seconds to go in a three minu first period.

Why don't you ask Doug Schwab?

Well, here's the position we've talked about a lot to Doug If there was a concern by the co Jim Zaleski and the brands, it would be right here.

You have obviously, the more experience you have, th the better you are from the bott But he needs to get better.

And as all freshmen do.

Right, here's an opportunity.

Come back to the feet.

You're saying the one thing that coaches say a Schwab is you better be ready to 7 minutes because he's going to all the way every second.

There's a snap down into a leg.

HENSON It didn't work.

Well, one of the things I know we were just saying about him is that unlike many wrestlers who have a different philosophie about it, he likes to wrestle all the good people on the islan He doesn't duck anybody.

He doesn't mind if he goes in there against an iron side.

He figures he's going to be bett You know, Eddie Banach used to s that he just wanted to survive t If he thought he could get out of the practice room.

He wasn't scared of anybody When he got out on the mat to the wanted to score here with about a minute, about 10 seconds left in the bring it up first pe Henson got to take it out on a single leg and let Schwab u and away Iowa state eight teams long Sanders by right inside fir touch Bobby Reed out 3 seconds to go to the one gentl here's where Dwight hands would like to keep Doug Schwab d for a while to be able to gain in writing time advantage.

And so you'll see him probably come on top instead of the style that lets y the international start, he's going to come on top.

He's going to try to stay behind the arm, breaking down guitarist, get over the hips and put a lot of pressure.

C pressure forward so that you see Schwab on his ha That's where Henson wants to kee him pushed out on his hands.

But Schwab doing a nice job gett get his hips underneath him.

See that's where your power is.

HENSON Reestablishing it There's a minute of right and ti ten for Henson so he may get nea as long as he can keep him right and not get called Who's going t a chance of turning him over.

But they're no he's not that I'm happy to ha hanging small juju gentle right in time belongs to Henson at one point.

If he gets it, why go on abusing advantage more than your opponen Get to a point at the end of the It doesn't happen in high school but it does in college.

Henson down on the leg couldn't get all on his work off of the position on his right arm and throw it guys to say very stable position position Bobby Douglas and all the great are big on position where you ne so you can go any direction stable on defense staples of the offense.

Henson is a classic at that what but Doug Schwab needs to do is just not take a backseat here and keep putting the pressure on He knows he has a shape.

He loves to go that 7 minutes and he needs to do what he's doing right now, put a lot of pressure, make the referee start looking at Henson.

And that's what he's doing.

See, he's in he's make a shot.

You know that Ramirez, the referee, is thinking a littl And here we have a little he's p and Dwight Henson is calling tim One of the things that the coaches and officials have talked about is whether taking a timeout is unethical.

And of course, it isn't if you're if you're hurt.

But a lot of times wrestlers seem to take timeouts when it just awesome being about this year.

But it's one of those rules that doesn't have a downside.

It doesn't have any right.

There's no consequence conscious that they're pointing out to it a little bit more.

They want action.

They don't want stoppage in the And you can bet whether it's Douglas or Zaleski, they want neither of their wrest doing anything like that.

You can bet Coach Douglas is say let's get out there and go right Come on, Dwight.

And it's just one of those thing you don't want to have happen as a senior.

He's been on it twice now and he's feeling you can see tha confidence growing in Doug Schwa It's building.

And he's saying, I want to wrest And Dwight Henson is being beat right now in a sense, from a psychological standpoint.

Now we're going back to the thir period.

This time, Henson will start in the down position.

Last year, you remember Henson was £126 against man a wh and that was a and here's where Henson didn't take a backseat himself.

He got in on that and he finished the job.

He needs to stay after it here or he is going to find himself in trouble against this young Do Schwab from Osage, Iowa, member of a great wrestling fami Well, let's set it up here.

Coming up right in time belongs to Henson by 12 So if he can keep Ross Schwab sl keep hits and down for 12 second he could erase that point.

Henson tried in the hands and he's just eliminated.

And and that's why the first ste gives him a lot of a lot of a lot of confidence that I'm the guy who is almost s He's almost smiling.

He's on the Doug Schwab against on earth and under arm spinning tails Grizzly cross not a bit tired you know with 10 seconds to go in the third period and again Henson has to be conce about the star job He's back in he already has one warning and the penalty is coming and they're only going one way.

They're going away.

That is behind Henson right now.

Schwab is putting all the pressu on now right there.

That's what's dangerous about He because he does have a great dou But he was not able to complete He was in right here.

It will be it'll be whether this freshman can keep from maki a major mistake right here from showing good def as well as Henson.

And Schwab looks like he's every as in this as Henson is the one by stone.

And that's the kind of thing that Iowa State is going against Iowa does not want to happen, but it happened here with the se against the freshman disqualification.

I mean, you're it's whoa.

Even that one was a big one for Well, we said earlier that Henso sometimes was a little lifeless in the first parts of the matche But this one, he I would say he'll probably himself use the p a little bit and he is the loser a disqualification with 15 secon But that's Iowa six, Iowa State And that was one the hawks have to figure is an upset.

Now here comes all-American Mark Ironside against Frank Kesl This is one that Ironside is heavily favored in because he's a national champ and hasn't won this year.

Kessler, another Osage wrestler at this time for the Iowa State Cyclones, Ironside from Cedar Rapids, Jefferson, wh he was a two time state champion national champion.

So next year we look at Ironside and I was going to say Doug Schwab is like out of the Ironsi And a lot of what happened could be in that last match was Henson never dreamed that that that Schwab was that relent But the other hand maybe even Henson was sick.

Some things that we don't know a but his body shut down, his mind shut down, everything shut down.

And he just basically didn't know where he was.

And Schwab just kept it going.

And I think it was correctly cal Match.

We're talking about the one that just got done, but it was pretty incredible.

And now we're on the guy that maybe taught Schwab how to Maybe it was because Schwab watc for the past three years on TV and watched him in matches.

Maybe it's because of what he's learned in the practice room.

But this man on top from Iowa, M Ironside, I call him a human buz He's a man that never gives up, always pushing forward.

What a role model for Doug Schwa who just he just did it in a way that Mark higher sides get any better?

Who wanted to score?

Ironside got the satellite takedown and let Kessler go here in the first period.

He's a plugger.

He'll stay in there and and go, the kind of guy who works hard in the practice room and he's no but he'll keep coming up after y And right here, he's just got to establish himself for Iowa State They need to have a good match i What do I mean by a good match?

He needs to score some points.

Every point he scores will take another notch.

He's certainly not favored by an or not even favorite to score unless Ironside lets it.

But what a big score that would Ghislain could get in there and actually score against Irons Beautiful inside three five Mark Ironside rolls up his second tou makes it 4 to 1 with a minute to just underhook Tripp back throug double leg all the way through c They have to.

Well, it's Iowa six and Iowa Sta after a disqualification at Rotterdam, £26 for inactivity Well, as you said, just just shutting down and not you said it well, He abused the privilege.

He abused any rule that was out there for allowing to have timeouts for injuries.

He just refused to answer the ca And so, you know, in every sport, there' there's a place for calling the When an opponent refuses to answer the call to resume.

Now, third takedown for Ironside who is expected to win handily here at 134 foul.

If we're looking ahead, we'll se Jeff McGinnis for the first time in two years time in £142 match against another of a young Sanderson's for Iowa State, which is twice.

And that's the end of the first peri of a2a second three to go, 6 to 2 Irons We'll start in the down position six two gentlemen, are you set?

Well, up, up, up, up, up.

Because he gets to his feet, controls the hands and is out very easily Seven, two, two, two.

And the takedown makes it 9 to 3 Right.

We got Ironside coming up and I've got an Iron Man sitting bes Frank Kingsley is a sophomore from Osage, majoring in AG agriculture busin and he lost two twice to Ironside last year in the dua So he's filling in for what got him down to one on the block And this is another brother act for Iowa State.

Luis Blanco is expected to be the number one man at this weigh But kiss again, filling in, doing a good job as a replac just gets in there and works First.

We're looking at the defending national champion at this weight and Mark Ironside, a three time all-American, goes 100 miles per all the time.

It's just his style is fun to watch.

And I know that Zaleski of the b and Lincoln Macri, we think he's a lot of fun to co He's putting pressure on the Und too, right?

They're putting a lot of pressur Likes to snap and go around, look a little trip, then cover t Two points.

Just all he did was come underne got in close, created an angle trip, covered t and got to where he is.

He's putting the pressure on by Underhook and tripping dow covering the hips.

Of course, one has a double unde against you and he starts to tri You worry about going on your ba So course he bailed out fast.

See right here, when his opponent gets tired, gets his head down, he's looking for a cradle.

You know, your matches out on the mat are going to be less than what's in a practice room like Iowa and Iowa State.

It's because of a tough mentalit that that situation usually happ real good hits, good short offense series right where he had that front headlock and just really put the pressure and went around for the leg and come around, came around for the takedown to do nothing t by Justin Decker to get to £158 on scoreboard two to nothing, Io 15 to 7 in the team's glory.
