Iowa Public Television presents an intrastate showdown between the third ranked Iowa Hawkeyes and the fourth ranked Iowa State cyclones.
Hello, everyone.
I'm Kim Johnson and welcome to our season debut of college wrestling, our 28th year on Iowa public television.
And if you like what we do, you'll have a chance to show us through your phone calls and support a little later.
And now it's my privilege to introduce my wrestling broadcasting commentator and partner, Hall of Famer Dan Gable in coach Iowa versus Iowa State.
Been some classics over the year and this year, third and fourth ranked in the nation.
Well, that shows a lot of respect because they didn't finish that way last year.
And so the pollsters out there give them that ranking.
Well, speaking of last year, look at that 19th and eighth Maui.
They fell a long ways.
Well, I tell you, if history repeats itself, that will never happen again.
Well, the pollsters agree with you.
Look at already this year they are ranked third and fourth.
There must be something that the pollsters think that Iowa and Iowa State have coming on.
Let's talk about Iowa for a little bit.
Very disappointing to finish eighth last year.
Well, obviously, Coach, the last is under a lot of pressure this year just to get those Hawkeyes back up in those tight finishes for the championship.
But, you know, they have a couple of All-Americans returning and they're without actually one of their All-Americans this year.
And that's Steve Markel, the heavyweight.
Of course, there's the national champion, and he is taking an Olympic redshirt and he will be trying to make that Olympic team.
And Cliff Moore, of course, a two time all-American, needs to take those sixth place finishes and go up for those Hawkeyes.
Luke Eustace also, he'll be coming back after two years ago, finish second in the nation.
He was an all-American two years ago to be an all-American.
You finish in the top eight.
That's what it means for Iowa State, 19th place here.
That's also disappointing.
That's unheard of.
So we don't want to talk about that.
Well, they have an all women all-American returning in Roberson.
Roberson is the team leader.
He's £133 all-American, came on at the right time at the NCAA last year and he's hoping to lead the Cyclones to victory.
Well, I think one thing that the pollsters are looking at are who are the young guns on both these teams?
Well, you don't have to look far in Iowa State.
They've got two good guys from Council Bluffs named the Paulson twins.
Yeah, Trent and Travis and I'll tell you what, they have started off like gangbusters.
They're really kicking some, you know, what out there right now.
And they're planning on doing that for the rest of the season.
Well, it's been over 16 years since Iowa State last beat Iowa when this man, Jim Gibbons, was coaching the Cyclones.
Now, let's join our other broadcasting colleague, none other than Jim Gibbons.
Well, thank you to Tim.
Let's just look back at that highlight.
There's a lot of cycling fans here who probably like to see them when, so they wouldn't have to see that highlight be reminded that all the time.
But back then we probably had about 12, 13 All-Americans between both teams out there.
Today, it's only going to be to all Americans, one for each team.
And so there's a lot of new guys out there, a lot of new faces, and that isn't altogether bad because they get a chance to make a name for themselves in this great rivalry.
One of the big rivalry matchups will be at £125, where you've got Luke Eustace, an all-American from two years ago, an NCAA runner up, undefeated record going east.
Grant Nakamura.
Nakamura is off to an eight to start here.
I like the way he wrestles the match.
Well, I don't know what the score will be, but I'll have a lot of action in it.
You know, I look at this whole thing is that you got to stay tuned because we don't know what the heck is going to go on here with this.
And that's an honest, honest thought.
Here are a lot of unknowns early in the season.
Who knows what's going to happen with this?
Stay tuned.
We're starting off £174, Tyler Nix versus Mattson or Turner.
Bradley versus back as forces are in and versus Smith or Milhaud Polar Shop or Justis at Heavyweight and Justis and Nakamura at 125 of Manila at 133 Robertson or Roberson or Sundell More and Gaelic Justis and Paulson, Johnson and Paulson and Pape and pass to finish off the meet.
Well, here we are in Hilton Coliseum and nice crowd today Dan and it's always a great event, always a great atmosphere When I when I was date get together I agree we had that early season there's Mike Allen Mike Allen and he'll make them go Tony while there won't be any Stallings he calls a lot of quick stalemates and he also keeps athletes in motion at all times.
And in the series right now, Iowa having quite a string of victories, 30 straight victories dating back to 1987 for the Iowa Hawkeyes.
There it is.
I will lead 52 to 14 and we will start at 174.
And guys are going to be at the I believe the rim.
It'll be Tyler next versus hey, you guys are red.
You're green.
Okay.
That's Nils Madsen.
Nels Madsen from Ames, Iowa.
Sophomore going up against the senior Tyler Nicks, Tyler's one that had a disappointing finish last year for the Hawkeyes.
Well, he's had a couple of years where he really was in consideration or in position to be an all-American.
I believe he was going into the national tournament seeded fairly high both the last two years and had a disappointing finish.
So here's one kid that a senior that absolutely needs a good year to feel good about leaving the program for the Hawkeyes.
Well, with this toss up kind of meet that we're looking at, it is a very important position right now for the Iowa Hawkeye to get out, because he's certainly a favorite in this one.
So neutral, I agree totally with you.
But so far, Tyler has been the aggressor.
But he's not doing any setups right now.
Right now, he's been kind of just diving from the outside.
So it's one of those things that he's got to put some action.
From a setup point of view, it's hard to shoot straight on and score without moving your opponent.
And that's what he's been doing, actually.
Right.
There's another one to shoot straight on.
Not getting any angles, not great positions.
He's fighting up the opponent's hips.
That's Iowa State's wrestler is doing a good job.
However, I don't know, three or four more attempts by Nixon.
You know, he could get the referee against him.
So as we said, Nick is a senior from Green, Iowa, and Mattson is a sophomore from Ames.
And there's mixed in on the legs what he need to do right here?
Well, he actually did.
He got a little bit better penetration shot.
It came up.
He didn't clear his head.
And so Martin was able to use his hips on the way down.
And now we're going to probably in a stalemate position getting what next Use is a lot of energy here.
You better be in good shape.
You really should be good shape because he's just taken straight on shots like he's not expecting or respecting Madsen's athletic ability and Madsen so far is just doing a good job to square his hips and delay in the match.
I think I was expecting bonus points in the situation I'm at is doing a pretty good job, But now he's starting to control the hip a little bit more.
So it's it's still he's got Twizzlers going over his head and he had to give up too because to points you know a good Lesnar he wasn't finishing well the leg tackles but he he kind of went for the fall and it made Madsen kind of back off gave him a takedown there that was a takedown for next from Iowa puts the Hawkeye up to zero with 55 seconds left in the first period periods are 3 minutes and then two and two for the three period match.
Come back to the center.
Okay, I'll bring you.
I had two zero now the first opportunity for next to really work on the top position he had that three front three quarter Nelson on an early wears a guy down quite surprising just made the escape coming right back up no bear hug pretty nice shot there now he just has to get that in down to his knees and he does two more points for takedown makes the score 4 to 1 in favor of next for the Hawkeyes.
I think it's a matter of just being able to stay in this match from a momentum point of view and keep the pressure on.
But he so far he's had to struggle a little bit, hasn't been easy for him Better might be a little better wrestler than people think here.
Well, he's got a two and four record.
He's been in the room now for two, maybe three years and that's not a bad, you know, athlete looking physically here.
And he's been pretty strong to stay out of these front.
Three quarter of his track record are now putting a lot of pressure on his upper neck up the shoulder here.
We're going to want our guys, Mike Allen, like we talked earlier, he doesn't let you rest on anything.
And now he has warned the Iowa wrestler Tyler Nixon was calling.
Mattson got an earlier warning early in the first period.
So both wrestlers have been warned or are stalling.
No, no, no change of control there.
That was close.
Yeah, that's the first time I've seen a stall warning in that position, but I think it was more of it.
Indicators say, hey, Google something else while it wasn't going anywhere.
Right.
But usually don't see a stall warning of a pending combination like that.
But that's the way the referee referees these and event Mike Allen keeps him going is read choice and there's the choice he has when he slips out right he actually had a better single shot there and then he is going to let arm out to to get where he's actually going for the pin.
And that made the takedown a lot easier to get going for the pin.
Nixon, again lets Mattson loose for one, makes the score 4 to 2.
They're back on their feet next in the black and gold.
Mattson In the Iowa State.
Red and gold.
Scarlet and gold.
Hawkeye out in front.
In his first match at the meet between Iowa and Iowa State here at Hilton Coliseum to see if he uses the same tactic now before he went over the head, but now he's staying low and he went into that over and under right call Osage raid Navy raid.
A lot of different holds different names in that but they work when he does so correct there is he just keeps a recall in the back of his neck and just drives right through low doesn't allow himself to get sucked up around the hips or be easier to defend.
Next, again allows Madsen to come to his feet for a point.
For Madsen makes the score 6 to 3.
That was a good shot there.
He he went down easy there Another takedown.
If if the Iowa State wrestler is starting to now protect himself just from like trying to get through this match without a major decision, it's a wrong tactic.
Right?
Got to keep battling people.
That last takedown, he kind of threw himself in the bottom there.
So it's like it makes things makes finishes happen a lot easier.
Well, he competed pretty well for the first 3 minutes.
And now we've seen signs of just what you're talking about.
Another escape for Madsen, given to him by Tyler.
Next.
Next, Four takedowns, eight points, Madsen, four escapes given to him by Nick.
The scores 8 to 4 step right into that shot here Nice job by Nick.
Now the whizzer again though.
Yeah This matter is slowing down.
Yeah he's going to hook that leg.
He's okay, but.
Oh, they're in too much way back.
Another takedown with only 15 seconds left in the second period for Nick makes the score.
1040.
He let it go.
A tactical error there.
Didn't know what time it was.
You know, it was a Brandes.
He could probably score in there.
No explosive takedown, but and he may get one here.
But it's close.
It's close.
And he got it.
Wow.
Oh, Danny, he's just.
Okay, We got to talk to Jim Zaleski earlier.
Yeah.
Neutral week, right?
I think you keep reminding them of the expectations.
You know, where we've been, where we want to be.
You know, it's hard when you're at the top and then not to be there.
So the expectations are to be at the top, and that's what we want to do.
And it's hard doing that, but that's what we're working for.
And this year, you know, Jim Gibbons, Jim Zaleski has been a part of the Iowa program as a wrestler and as a coach at the top, and he's got a unique place in Iowa's wrestling history.
He really does.
Is it a three time NCAA champion?
And here is an assistant coach in over taken over for our the legend to our left.
But it's you know he knows the situation he's in right now as far as trying to challenges group Iowa wrestlers to wrestle at a level that they weren't wrestling at last year.
Now you're right he's got some pressure on him.
And he he definitely has probably a little bit more uptight than most people would be in their jobs.
But at this time of the of the of the year.
But he's doing a good job here with next and next.
It's been piling up the points I'm sure that the the extra point that you get by winning by eight points is a big factor in this meet.
Well, he has that eight and more.
The score is 6 to 6 on the strength of eight takedowns for Tyler next he has continued that takedown machine a little injury time for Madsen but he's coming back to the center now and Tyler next is going to continue to let him go and take him down.
16 to 6 in favor of next with a minute left in the third go.
He he was going for the knockout there.
He missed the iron, but it was a knockout punch, which will try to get a fall.
And I think that's what if he's going to be able to turn mats and he's probably going to end up doing it from the feet.
But you're in a tough situation here.
If you're if your opponent's not going to compete with you, it's difficult to go ahead and take him all the way to his back.
And that's exactly what that's exactly what took place right there.
So, you know, he's going to calling for stalling here shortly because he's kind of hanging out now 18 to 7, nine takedowns for Tyler next.
It's right now going to be an extra point for the team instead of three for a regular decision.
Right now, he's on schedule to get an extra point and that will be four for the Hawkeyes out of the gate after the first match at 174.
We have 15 seconds left in this this match, his first match in the big meet between number three ranked Iowa, number four, rectangular state.
I think this might be one of the only matches that one guy was heavily favored over the other that he plays with right now to do an a nice job of competing there at the end.
So 8 to 8 with what he had writing time.
He had writing time, 19 to 8, four points for the Hawkeyes after the £174 match.
Well now at 184 got kind of a rematch of an earlier match in the in the year down at Omaha.
Paul Bradley from Iowa, the sophomore going against the redshirt freshman Kirk Backus.
That was quite a match, I hear I understand it was very close with back as Iowa State trying a high risk move and getting caught and getting pinned.
So, you know, Bradley might be heavily favored based on that, but based on the match?
No, I don't think so.
In fact, some predictors had Iowa State winning this match.
I believe the outcome with Fuller, who writes for them, predicted that Backus would actually win by a major here.
Well, here we go.
And it would be big for Iowa State.
In fact, it's a big match.
They need to strike as fast as they can against the Hawkeyes to put themselves in position to get their first victory in 31 meetings between Iowa and Iowa State dating back to 1987.
Nothing would be sweeter than Bobby Douglas to get his first dual meet victory over Iowa.
Here in Hilton Coliseum.
Just get that off of your back.
You know, as far as everybody, you know, talking about it, it becomes the preeminent thing.
There's been a lot of several close meets in there, a few blowouts, but, you know, it's just the nature of the rivalry between these two schools.
I mean, you get this is you got to point to this meet.
I think you point to this match, you point to this match right here.
I think this match might be the biggest match of the evening, just from a standpoint that both wrestlers we're going to see which one shows up here.
And whoever shows up probably is going to give the momentum to the two.
The other team has a very good chance.
While Bradley is Iowa native from Team Iowa, wrestled at South Team A, Kurt Baccus is a Blair Academy graduate out of New Jersey.
Redshirt freshman.
Both wrestlers are into the varsity lineup for the first time, the first time they've met in this big traditional event, the Iowa versus Iowa State.
How much does that affect the wrestlers the first time through?
Well, it's first time in wrestling in front of a crowd this size here.
And, you know, those these athletes grew up knowing about Iowa and Iowa State, the nature of the rivalry.
And so that's a big thing.
And, you know, you it's just not the same unless you put that singlet on their respective school and going out there and doing so much different than practice and much different these guys work in this year.
I just remember my my ears ringing, you know, all throughout that those matches, you just didn't hear it anything.
Just heard that ring.
They either get out of dream.
I tell you, the referee could have a factor in this match if the way these guys are wrestling right now, if it continues where, you know, both guys aren't doing a whole lot to respect each other, there's been some half tense, a lot of little hand fighting here and there.
Nobody's really looking to score an attempt type of move or makes a difference.
But, you know, it's early yet in the match.
Tim Johnson, along with Dan Gibbons Jim Gibbons for college wrestling, Iowa public television's coverage of Iowa and Iowa State here at Hilton Coliseum.
When the second match up 184 between Curt Backus, Marla State and Paul Bradley from Iowa that just came in, highly touted.
He was ranked the top £215 high school wrestler in the nation, coming out of style 215.
Yes.
Oh, my gosh.
I know Blair Academy is like one of the best schools in America in high school wrestling prep academy.
That's where Michael wrestled.
But, you know, it's kind of interesting here that the mind is playing a factor here.
And, you know, in our sport right now, we need these athletes to actually attempt more scoring moves instead of just kind of hand fighting out there.
You know, from a scoring, there's a first good legitimate shot.
And actually, he looks pretty good.
He looks looks good, looks good.
And both athletes are both athletes.
You're going to see here, they didn't call it.
They didn't call it.
Yeah.
Wow.
Well, I tell you what, Bradley did a nice job with his young leg.
He could over his head, could very easily twisted his knee there.
But obviously didn't look like he did.
But, you know, that's that's where that rule in freestyle.
You know, they made some new rule changes on the edge of the mat and gave it to the aggressive guy.
But it didn't really help there.
And I really feel like it's almost almost worth scoring on that edge of the mat like that.
Well, it wasn't a score.
And so it does in zero zero in the first match, here are the first period in the £184 match between backhands and Bradley and back as well.
Go down.
Okay.
Bobby Douglas, we had a chance to talk to you earlier.
We asked him to and we'll talk to him later in the next period about the comment about the progress of his team and Panthers and nice job.
My back is there keeping the elbow and looks like Bradley wanted to put the near leg in his nice job pushing that away and he fought a stall warning with a boy that's fast 9 seconds into Yeah it is.
Wait a minute.
Look at when we knew that it was going to happen.
Mike Fast.
Alan That's what we call it.
I just was keeping him action going.
That's all he's doing.
One point escape for Baca's puts Iowa State out in front one zero.
This marks the first time that an Iowa State wrestler has been in front as Tyler Nix had a very convincing win over Nils Madsen to begin this make it.
Bradley really looks like he's using a lot of energy in those tie ups and just squeezing and just using a lot that tensile strength that sometimes just wears you out a little bit.
I think he looks a little more flushed to me and then what backs back a little bit more relaxed.
Right now, it's kind of interesting.
You said he's 215.
You know, I didn't know that.
So kind of it's kind of probably a different body type at that time.
He looks trim and looks lean.
You know, it's just a matter of how you go about your nutrition down, what weight class you can.
And he looks great.
We're past the halfway mark of the second period at 185, £184, second match between Iowa and Iowa State.
Not a lot going on as far as techniques.
We've had one good, sweet, single normal score.
But, you know, know I've seen what I've seen the Iowa wrestler.
I've been in the Iowa wrestling room a few times and I know he can do something.
So it's it's like you've got to get inside these kids heads, coaches to be able to get them to execute scoring moves because you're not going to score by staying around and tapping and going.
Bradley Over to the trainer for the Iowa corner, Jim Zaleski there talking to him.
Obviously a cut, some bleeding going on.
Chris Bono out to talk to his athlete.
There's Baca.
So we're talking about the nation's top 215 pounder coming out of high school a couple of years ago.
Here he is at £184 looking trim and and fit and force Bono right there.
Well, I'll tell you, Chris Bono and Joe Williams is on the other side right now rapping, helping get Bradley back ready.
Those two young men are going to represent the United States in about another month, month and a half, and they're going to try to qualify two weight classes, 145 163 so we can send a whole team to the Olympics right now.
That's Joe Williams there.
And they're going to represent America.
And it's up to those two boys, young men, to to to get America to the Olympics so we don't just automatically qualify.
We have five of the weight classes.
Those two weight classes aren't.
And they'll be over there in Slovakia getting the job done.
Well, that has to be a tough place to go.
Do it, too.
It's not like it's on home ground.
They're pretty seasoned.
So I I'm I'm pretty sure that they'll do it.
Well, Baccus skate early in the second period is holding up for a10 lead at the end of the second period.
We asked Bobby Douglas to comment on the progress of his team, the joint drive.
Well, it's been kind of like a Cinderella season for us so far.
We've had a great start.
We're six.
No, no one expected that.
I certainly didn't.
But as we make progress, we're seeing a tremendous change in attitude and the guys are wrestling well, our progress is based on our freshman team, of course.
Or freshman go.
There's the escape for Bradley to make it one one.
And what would make it more of a Cinderella season for Bobby Douglas would be a big win here today.
Then you can start talking about something real special going on at Iowa State again.
You certainly could.
And I think it all started when he took that team on the road over to Lehigh.
They're ranked number two at the time to a young group, and they went over there and beat Lehigh in the meet.
A big surprise to everybody.
Hey, you know, you remember that stolen call early when he was right in 9 seconds?
You know, they could be stalling.
It could be anything that take place here and could determine this match.
So this referee's not real happy about a lot of attempts, I'm sure.
And somebody better be scoring moves.
Well, back is is really the only one that's been able to drop in.
Anybody has only done it one time.
One time.
Yeah.
And so now Bradley looks at this list looking mismatch is of course again two overtimes now two that are different so the overtimes could go a long time that it's almost hard it's almost hard to explain.
You know we almost want to get there and do it so I can explain what's going to happen because it's going to take the rest of the match for me to explain it right now.
Well, Mike Allen putting his hand in there.
There's a shot by a really nice shot.
He is in good hips.
Good hips.
Whoa, whoa, whoa.
That's a big pick now for Bradley and for Iowa.
Yeah, but let me tell you, lots of time left because he's hurt now.
A cramp.
Got a cramp.
It cracked up.
Yeah, I tell you, he did it.
Great shot.
And he steps up and just trips him right to the mat.
But he had to shoot a single leg before that to get in.
That double leg was after a good flurry.
And I tell you, I told you he could shoot, but it's like one for one.
You know, that's not that's perfect, but it's not great entertainment.
But it worked.
And you have to be perfect.
But Mac has kind of played into that.
He kicked his head to the outside and put him in a good position to follow through.
So he had it almost looked like Mac was going to get around behind.
He had the near ankle and was squaring up his hips and just he just showed some prison strength there.
Give movement in that double leg there.
He never stopped.
That was pretty incredible right there.
I mean, those are good hips coming in.
My back is right there.
Yeah, that was a great second effort.
Well, you know that remember now scores 3 to 1 stall warning and he's probably going to get an escape and that's talk.
Or if he doesn't, if he backs up at all.
38 seconds is just enough for something like that.
Oh, absolutely.
This match is far from over.
It still could be in overtime yet.
Or the fact if I was Iowa Russell's aggressive in his last 38 seconds, it could be Iowa's victory legacy.
Coach Zaleski really gave me up.
This is a big match state now it's great to 202.
Oh, wow.
Are you day?
Wow.
Way back, boy.
No back boy you need.
Oh, Oh, yeah.
Now he's going to have to get out.
He need to keep him on right there and scores Not right now.
The score should be for 2 to 4 downward.
Three, 4 to 3, 4 to 3.
And if they don't go out of bounds and is not getting up.
Yeah, he caught flat footed.
That was a heck of an inside trip.
It's going down and they got to score and correct Well now he's got one is 2.6.
Well it was one and two wasn't hard to get only a reversal.
Oh the all game reversal Wait a minute But that was then you get an escape.
Here it is.
There's a correct score.
There's a correct score.
And that's going to be in it is a win.
Now, with a said that was a back to back moves.
Wow.
The freshman wins it here four back a score to three and brings Iowa to the Iowa state to within 4 to 3 on the scoreboard.
Whoop.
Wow.
That was a flurry action.
Do I want those boys try to wrestle like that the whole match?
Boy, we would have been in for it.
Yeah.
Oh, I don't know if they could have walked out of here, but now.
Well, we'll go out from the break.
Right now.
We'll go out and that's the end of the £184 match with the score.
Iowa for Iowa State, three.
Remember, Iowa public television's great college wrestling coverage wouldn't be possible without the support of viewers like you.
We hope you'll do that right now.
Well, that's the way to start.
I put two actions together, but two actions together and they work.
That's the way it should be.
Several actions.
Oh, hey, what do we have for Iowa State now at 197?
Trevor Smith is a junior from Longview, Washington.
He's going up against Ryan forces, a senior from Decorah.
And here we go.
And I would say that this is definitely favored in this match when you guys always see great things from forces beating the eventual national champion last year in the Iowa, Minnesota meet.
So, you know, we know he's going to give us a 100% effort but beat the see if that results in points here.
We want to get his hands on uniforms.
Smith transferred in from Highland Community College and redshirted last year, but he's from the state of Washington.
He was a state champion going up against an Iowa native wrestling for the Hawkeyes.
Ryan forces.
Well, I'll tell you what, that last 40 seconds of that last match where Bradley end up scoring, shot a single, switched out to a double finish to take out then and then back escaping, going right into it across trip their inside trip.
That was as much Jackson in the 40 seconds that you want to see like at the first 40 seconds that's good stuff and it'll go continue to wrestle like that and then we'll fill the arena again.
You got it Dan I mean, that's what college wrestling is all about.
We're at £197.
The third match of this big meet between Iowa and Iowa State here at Hilton Coliseum and Kim Johnson, along with Dan Gable and Jim Gibbons.
And £184 was a treat.
Hey, hey, Paul Bradley Drywall went out ahead late in the match to go out.
I had it 3 to 1 straight.
And then Backus from Iowa State Escape dropped right back in, got out, got the takedown and rode out Bradley for the win 4 to 3.
And that is the team score right now in the third match after two full matches, the team score is Iowa four, Iowa State three.
The other thing there that we got the takedown with 20 seconds to go.
Bradley had enough time to get his escape, but never was able to build his base.
Get back off now.
Yeah, obviously Backus has got him in a position where he was extended, but, you know, there's a lot of pressure back on.
Yeah.
When you get total wrestling, you know, you keep your hips under you, you get right back out.
That could have been a great overtime match for us.
That was what I would have liked to see moving that ball on.
You know, points here, one minute left in this three minute first period, 197.
Please check it out with our second down the ground control account.
Not a lot of action here.
Not a lot of action.
Actually.
I actually get it.
Shot forces.
Yeah, all those four back out there.
And he's doing a good job of controlling with his hips, but they're on the edge of the mat.
Like I said, new rules on the edge.
New rule on the edge is basically if you can score on the edge, if any point, any foot or whatever is in bounds, just one point of of the wrestler.
So it's much easier to score, even though it didn't look like that when Bradley was able to get out of bounds.
There.
We saw Mike Allen just call forces from Iowa for stalling.
So he has been worn down for what looks like the first period is going to end zero zero up, and that's the end of the first period, zero zero.
We have Jim Gibbons standing by with an interview.
Thank you, Tim.
I'm here with the man of the moment here right now, Kurt, Marcus and Kurt, you're able to turn around a match where you got pinned in the Omaha Open.
But what were your thoughts there in that last 30 seconds?
Well, I started down.
I was like, well, I got 38 seconds to do something.
So I got out trying over a single, I guess, a human nature reference.
I tried know.
Thank goodness it worked, you know.
All right.
Well, great way to get the crowd pumped up here.
Give me your impressions about being here the first time the first big match here at Helena's.
So stunning.
You know, I mean, the whole crowd just goes crazy.
But congratulations.
Thanks, Jim.
And that's great for wrestling here at Hilton in Iowa State.
They enjoy going crazy here.
And they they want the opportunity and back just gave it to them at £184.
You know, I think it was confusing because the scoreboard actually said three three and the fans didn't really know what was going on for sure.
And I don't think anybody knew what was going on except for once they finally changed that score.
And so that gave the the the fans a little bit more.
Okay.
Well, we're in another match here in is a match.
This would be big for Iowa State to be into this match and no way out.
Trevor Smith is riding horses now 30 seconds worth in the second period.
And if you get a accumulate a minute or more riding time more than your opponent, that's an extra point at the end of the match for you.
So right now.
Trevor Smith has to be thinking about riding hard for at least another 30 seconds or so.
Oh, no, but Trevor Smith's just one of those guys that Bobby Douglas talked about is impressed with his attitude and competitive hand control.
Well, he's doing a good job.
They're doing a good job.
Farley got too far ankle come through.
It's going to need to move up for Mike Allen.
Yeah, He's got to get off his knees and drive into him, but he has See no warning on both sides now.
Yeah, just hanging on there.
He had an opportunity to have the far ankle.
Had the neck and neck climb.
Yeah.
Just bring your shoelaces up and drive across and break them down.
He's showing all signs of fatigue.
Yeah.
Something.
Something.
Trevor.
His mind's not quite as into as much as well.
Both been worn as a whizzer by forces.
Needs to get his hip in a little more so he can straighten leg.
But the guy who has his head up usually wins the situation.
They got to probably do a good job there.
Wow, he's doing a good job, but he's got right in time.
And there's one he got, right?
Yeah, 90 seconds over a minute.
So it's one zero now.
Forces on the scoreboard for Iowa, but and he's got an ankle.
No, Trevor Smith gets it loose there.
But Trevor Smith has a minute.
Nine riding time left.
Meaning that if he goes down in that last period, he's got seven, 8 seconds to get out.
So he's giving himself some we want to take an injury time.
He wants to take an injury time.
He's having a tough time, which is cramping up or something.
I'm going to.
And he walked into this meet here with that area, think yeah so you'd have to think that that might be some sort of previous injury that might be now getting him.
But Iowa public television has a long tradition of quality sports coverage, and college wrestling is some of the best to keep this unique tradition alive.
We'll need your help.
With your support, you can receive great thank you gifts in the knowledge that you are part of this coverage you can only find here.
We hope you'll log on to our website and pledge your support.
And it's kind of rolling it out.
Oh, here we go.
He's cutting the injury time.
He's going back out there.
Hey, I think he's second guessing himself a little bit.
Ways on is thinking he's like he's like he's in a class.
Yeah.
Classroom.
You know?
So out here, we don't want to think.
We want to react.
Well, it seems like back in your interview with him talked about instinct.
He didn't use the word, but he was saying it was my instinct to do the inside trip and that's why he won the match.
Well, you've also got to deal with Professor Mike Allen here, the referee, and he's going to expect that you go with the hype.
Oh, wow.
Well, he he had him, but got something going on for a while.
Yeah, he should have actually forces made a tactical error there.
He had to take off and he went to the ball and now he's in a position to score.
Wow.
Look at this time.
Now time.
Yeah.
You got to.
He got it.
I would say the time I don't I don't know I think something we're going to see what happens here or waving it off the die waiting.
All right.
I think that was a correct call.
I wasn't looking at the clock.
I was looking at the clock.
If time was out time ago, right here, about time was out.
Then he goes down.
So not quite Jackson right there.
And then he anyway, I had my eyes on the clock and that I think they made a correct call there and you know critical 9 seconds here.
Well, so far, the close calls one to Iowa, one to Iowa State.
And the people that made that call with the Iowa State bench over there, as far as the time keepers are the ones that get hurt, most of those guys have been since Harold Nichols.
So and they're honest, they are easy for you to say.
This is I am he's got race to go in another race and now it's going to be about the bullpen.
Warren Right, right, right.
There didn't seem to be the urgency there for Trevor Smith in those 9 seconds.
I think he is.
He's got going on physically, doesn't he?
Well, he could scramble two of them.
You know, he's got an ability.
He should have been take it down right a couple of times there and he came out of a good situation when force has made maybe a couple of tactical errors before maybe the trade instead of a leg tackle there at the end.
There are a great old state in there.
But yeah, it's one of those things that happened.
This could be interesting.
Match the escape now Folsom gave to Smith after he erased the writing time.
Neither of them have more than 2 minutes, so they're both on their feet.
There's a minute.
20 seconds left in the match, and the score is one one in the third match, £197 at the big meet between Iowa and Iowa State here at Hilton Coliseum.
It looks like to me Doug Smith is in a good position just to take advantage of forces, haste.
You know, he gets in a position, he's almost there and all of a sudden, you're right, not use good position and follow through.
And Smith is right there to make it difficult for him.
But I don't think Smith's enough Wow.
In him to take advantage of that.
Correct.
He's coming out of some stuff.
I tell you he is.
He's got some good strong legs that his legs may be strong, but they might be a little weak right now be they might get really interesting because it could just be how he looks.
Yeah, he might.
Yeah.
I mean, he's doing all that I haven't seen.
I haven't seen him.
Russell might.
Well here's the part in the match here where the moment is everybody.
What to do.
Well this is a downer basically sudden victory right now here even though it's not overtime, it's basically sudden victory and somebody wants to score there.
Well, let's flip around.
What does Smith need to do here?
Because.
Because processes in both guys are.
Yeah, this is this is unique.
This is unique here.
Whoa, whoa.
Look at this.
Look at this.
There's well, he.
Wow.
I tell you what.
Rambles their classic example, the guy who keeps his head up in the scramble situation by be head up.
I mean, keeping your head up off of the mat wins the scramble.
That's what we saw right there.
Wow.
Look at this.
Oh, good man.
Well, too late escape.
But that leaves Smith one point short of victory.
Forces from Iowa wins it to put Iowa up 7 to 3 after three matches here at Hilton Coliseum.
What?
Trevor Smith showed me something there.
He really was a much more good scrambler.
Get that guy in a little bit better shape later in the year.
He's going to cause some people some favors to take down for Folsom right there.
Had his head up wrinkle in the back of his neck, allowed him, put his hips down and when you're hip to hip with somebody, a guy who has his head up usually wins the scramble.
Good call.
That's Jim Gibbons.
I'm Tim Jones along with Dan Gable.
The score in the Iowa Iowa State meet here at Hilton Coliseum is 7 to 3 in favor of Iowa going into the heavyweight match, the fourth match of the heavyweight world.
This is another one of these that I think is what's going to happen, maybe what's going to happen here.
Two redshirt freshman going against each other, Richard Sharp from Iowa State.
He's an Iowa native from Bondurant and Ryan Fuller from Lisbon, Iowa, wrestling for the Hawkeyes.
This isn't this an interesting situation here?
You've got two Iowa kids probably at one point in time in the same weight class at the state high school wrestling tournament.
Fuller went on from Iowa to win the state championship twice, twice, twice.
And they were in the state.
You're exactly right.
They were in the same weight class twice and didn't meet.
Didn't meet.
But one guy has been probably having to deal with Steve Berko all the time, and that probably might affect your confidence a little bit.
Oh.
Oh, yeah.
The Fullers coming out here, Marco, like, well, he's is.
He's Michael, like, No, he's not.
Yeah, yeah, he's not light, he's strong.
But that was a pretty good little leg tackle for a big boy.
There you go.
But it was out of bounds.
And again, even though we have the out of bounds rules, still sometimes they still are out of bounds.
Right?
What?
Richard, off as you know, it had the big pan against Lehigh and that put the Cyclones in the victory column here against number two ranked team in the country.
Supposed to have a good record mostly a pretty good roll that was easy a pretty good takedown actually did a good job of finishing once he got the leg.
Well, know if you have a guy who has a pretty good role, you're probably not going to ride him.
No, You're going to do just what Fuller did right there.
The scores 2 to 1.
Fuller from Iowa gets a takedown within the first minute of the first period.
Then he lets up shots from Iowa State.
The score is 2 to 1 now.
Good tactic there.
Lots of action so far in this heavyweight.
So maybe conditioning would be a factor to get to a red to it got pressure that leg of the shot that's it for a show that dragged about two or three times now.
That's his drag.
He shows the ability to change levels.
Let's do a guys.
Yeah, I stay inside easy.
He looks like he's got an arsenal.
Really?
Well, not against Mark so much, but.
Well, but you know, just the idea that he's had to wrestle wrestling, that's probably gave him a lot of ability to be able to withstand this atmosphere.
What we're going to probably awful darn glad just get out of the room today I'm sure.
I think he when Michael goes to training at Colorado Springs, I think he feels pretty good that a takedown for Fuller from Iowa makes the score 4 to 1.
And he's going to stay clear of anything that Jeff could do with any kind of side role.
An escape for Sharp makes the score for two 235 seconds left in the first period of this heavyweight match.
Boy, that's funny how word travels, though.
You know, these two wrestlers have seen each other.
Maybe maybe they've watched each other in high school.
But when they found out the shot got the big man at Lehigh, word spread.
Well, how did that happen?
And now you see, Fuller doesn't want anything to do with trying to ride him here.
He just pushes them away and doesn't take them down.
Just like that.
Yeah, well, they say he just didn't do it once.
You hit it twice.
Yeah.
So, you know, you do something a couple of times, you you be aware of it.
Oh, wait.
Start warning on shots for avoiding that takedown.
Mike Allen, the referee from Waterloo, Iowa, one of the top referees in the nation year in and year out of this, this Richard Sharpe's a good story there.
You always got to have guys like this in the wrestling, right?
Yeah.
We got to talk to Richard, Jeff, about his experience in the program so far.
Hey, well, I just I'm just really excited to be here.
I've always loved wrestling and just getting a chance to wrestle at the collegiate level is just an experience.
I never thought I'd be able to have.
But when I walked on last year.
But I just keep working hard in the dressing room and it seems to have paid off.
Well, that young man already has a memory that will last a lifetime, you know, going to Lehigh and beat the number two ranked team at the time and having the fallen.
And you got to have those guys in your program.
Watch.
Dan Oh, absolutely.
You know, you need to bring people along.
They don't always have to be the best wrestler in the country, but to keep bringing them along, to have a good attitude, they can add a lot to you.
And and, you know, I don't think he was supposed to be the starter this year.
And so some reason he's he's he's in there and he's he's helping the team.
Well a shot they're getting extended we're talking about Richard Sharp from Iowa State he gets extended and Fuller turns that into a takedown for himself.
But he let us shop right back up to his feet.
The score is 6 to 4.
Definitely looks like a strategic match here, you know, as far as how people are wrestling.
So.
But it's close.
Yeah, I was going to say one big move and the wrestler behind his back in it.
And right now the wrestler behind is Richard Sharp from Iowa State, down 64 with 50 seconds left in the second period of this match at heavyweight fourth match of the evening here at Hilton Coliseum and Iowa State University, 87 score 7 to 3 in favor of the Hawkeyes.
After a close win by forces Ryan forces at 197.
Here's another takedown attempt and takedown for Fuller Oh, Ryan Fuller than Lisbon, Iowa Product freshman.
Both wrestlers, both heavyweights.
The freshman redshirt freshman been in the room for a year.
So and now they get their shot at a little drive little glory for these two storied programs Iowa and Iowa State you know for a head to head, no, that's job time.
Second period's going to end score 8 to 5.
That's on the strength of four takedowns.
But Fuller from Iowa, five escapes which sharp and now sorry, Fuller is going to go ahead and choose the neutral position.
So another tactic.
Yeah, which is pretty smart.
No, put yourself you're doing it so far.
5 minutes into the match.
Everything's work.
Got it going your way?
Not even close.
So far, the only vulnerability I saw was when he was finishing a takedown.
When the guy was reaching back, he started to push a little bit.
He could get caught there a little bit, but.
But he did a good job of Fuller, did a good job of keeping his hips with him.
This workshop asked the answer.
That answer the bell here.
He's got minute 30 left down by three.
And remember the last shot he took?
Yeah, he ended up losing.
So he didn't keep his hips with him.
So if he start coming in, we'll see if he's really got a penetration shot or not.
Fuller on the strength of four nice takedowns has given the Iowa heavyweight an 8 to 5 lead with just over a minute left in the match regulation time.
Looking over at the Iowa state brain trust are really not they don't have anything up their sleeve.
They don't I don't think right now it doesn't look like they're wanting to set up anything so much.
Now.
They have a big mover in action.
Gentlemen.
Come on, guys.
Oh, God.
Awful Jaw dropping.
Come here.
They wanted to go wrist and collar, so see what type of offensive moving set up with that nasty, nasty elbow under half control.
40 seconds left in this third and last period.
Regulation time for the heavyweight match.
The score is 8 to 5 in favor of Fuller, and he has been in control the whole way for takedowns only escapes four shots from Iowa State.
Three.
Yeah, he's going to have to commit something again, otherwise just lose the match.
Oh, he, Yeah.
He didn't even ha.
Yeah.
You see that.
Yeah.
A headlock.
Try to get this as well, coach.
Yeah, you bet.
That's, that's good.
That's good.
There.
He realized when he was in danger, he was that.
I like to tell you that There he is out There it is.
And I shoot.
They're not keeping his hips with him.
Got to keep the hip step up with the slave.
Leaving the back foot there didn't step up and cut the corner.
Well, he was disciplined.
That was a good strategy.
He went out to win that match and he did very nice and win for Ryan Fuller from Iowa, wins 10 to 5, and that makes the score 10 to 3 for Iowa.
Here's the big match now, especially for Iowa State.
Nakamura versus Eustis.
A reminder that today at intermission, we'll show you our college wrestling schedule for this season.
Plus, we'll give you our Web page address and let you know about some of the ways you can interact with us on the World Wide Web plan to watch today.
At intermission.
So now we go to £125 between Luke Justis and all-American.
Two years ago, he was second in the nation from Blue Earth, Minnesota.
He's senior going up against sophomore Grant Nakamura.
And they just wrestled a little while ago this season and went into overtime to actually Nakamura was got ahead of him, put him on his back, got ahead of him, Eustace came back, tied up the score and went into overtime and went on a takedown in overtime.
But you know, they've Russell three times so he's been used this but it's getting closer.
We saw signs of that beginning last year here.
Nakamura is just a fighter in all positions.
He's a good scrambler and from Hawaii.
Well, you know, they get that confidence.
Yeah.
Because they have a national champion now.
Absolute last year he's rated number one this year at 133, though, I first saw this at a national title for Hawaii and Nakamura's in on Justis.
He does a nice job.
Oh, wow.
What a scramble here.
What a coup.
Hawaii is where Hawaiian Nakamura is from.
But your sophomore record, he's improving steadily with this in hand.
This year he got this contract, but getting tied up here two on one by Eustace, doing a good job.
You want that job?
In his first year last year, he had a winning record, 17 and 15.
Nakamura did state so close get to right there, Iowa.
Add to that mat roll scores.
First year is used to skip to take down on the edge of the mat.
He goes up to zero back on Nakamura.
You just go to the bottom.
Go ahead.
Dream goes I think at that match a neutral uses gave up quite a few reversals.
It even got reversed to his back.
So here again you see the Iowa strategy here is not to go not to try to ride.
The Iowa State wrestler.
You actually use this as he's a pretty good writer.
He's an excellent rider.
That's how he finished second.
But he respects Nakamura 2 to 1 favor of Justis on the strength of a takedown and Nakamura getting an escape and goal in the first period, a minute 45 left, as Tom Brand says.
Hey coach for Jim Zaleski.
And they knew Olympic coaches just named this week.
That's why he's know you need to talk to Joe and and Chris get him ready to go overseas here because we definitely need all seven weight classes here.
Right.
You're home.
Yeah.
Well, I mean.
Well, there's three coaches right now.
Kevin Jackson is kind of in charge.
He's the national coach out of USA Wrestling and then Larry Jones, Zeke Jones out of University of West Virginia.
Seven weight classes, five are quite qualified already that that's in freestyle.
Only three are qualified in Greco.
Nice job in all four weight class they're qualified in and the young ladies wrestling Nice job they're by use is dropping in on a shot look like he almost lost possession there but he's able to put his head the back of his head underneath this lane.
The good job of throwing down with a look at this.
Look at this.
You got to keep your head up in your wind scrambles.
And there it is again.
Whose head is up right there right now?
You see his hands up?
Whoa, Now it's down.
See?
Yeah.
All right.
It just it it just a almost an axiom here for the sport.
Nakamura destroyed his leg out.
Boy, that's a nice job by use of driving around, getting there.
He's still got.
Yeah, he's got position right there.
Drive over to get to the far ankle, but.
Oh good scramble there.
Referee said enough on that knee.
Yeah, enough on that.
And I felt it.
Yeah.
Yeah.
As Tom Brand's thousand for Olympic freestyle team coach, it wasn't long ago that he was an Olympic gold medalist.
1996 World champion in 1993, I believe.
Right.
World champs win.
Big champion, Twin.
He's a twin.
We got to talk to Luke Justice.
We just asked him how his approa Definitely.
I mean, being a senior, being this my last year, definitely a weight wise, being a lot more disciplined, being with my weight, just coming into practice every day, just being ready to go, knowing that, you know, I got to get as much out of practice as I can just because it is my last year and just looking for big things at the end of the year.
Oh, that's good.
I mean, if if that's happening, you know, young man's life going into practice every day, looking to get the most.
That's one of the keys that.
Dan Oh, absolutely.
You know, the right frame of mind is, is where it's at.
And, you know, he mentioned the end of the year, but it's not going to happen unless you put good things in all year to hit.
That's correct.
And if he if his situation, he was the NCAA runner up, surprised everybody, get him there.
And then the next year it was injuries and and and a little bit illness here at the wrong time and lost a little momentum at the end of the year didn't play so sure that's a motivating here for him here this season and his brother again the brother of 149, Ty Justis dad's a former wrestling coach at Blue Blue Earth, Minnesota, who uses out in front three, two, one.
He got an escape in this second period and that's the only scoring so far.
Nakamura's only score is an escape.
So we have one takedown and three escapes.
There's Nakamura on in, on, in, on the leg.
Yeah, but he's hesitated now.
It's going to be difficult.
It's got to be tied up.
Yeah.
Left wrist tied up.
He hasn't.
He hesitates.
Is lost.
Yeah, well, make up.
I like what Nakamura did.
Their technique wise.
He showed a shot to the other side and finished it to the other other way and kind of got used to us coming in.
Ice is good wrestler.
Well, both going in, but you've just got the position he's in on the way part of the match here Wow two point takedown as the 40 seconds left in the second period two takedowns now for use to seize out in front 5 to £125.
This is our fifth match out of ten.
And the Iowa State meet here at Hilton Coliseum, let's say wow you system respecting Nakamura's athletic ability there just tries to tie up the wrist and hovers around the hips outside his chest is almost at the at the belt level.
Go back, guys.
Good shot Here's misses his takedown right just got to move it and went for the sweep Normally it you make it a little bit easier for your opponent if you wrap your arm around his waist.
There was really a little bit easier but he he had a move And that's why that sweep works.
Big 13 seconds here for Iowa State.
If you want to get back in the match night escape early versus put themselves back into the match, which oh, look, there's that roll, there's that roll, there's reversal.
That's why you call that a big 13 seconds.
Iowa public television's 28 year of college wrestling coverage continues next Thursday when you and I takes on Iowa from Iowa City at 9 p.m..
Tune in and catch all the action Thursday, December 11th.
Well, that was a big two points for Nakamura.
I was just getting ready to say I think I was wrestle, very disciplined, very workmanlike and hadn't made many mistakes.
That was the first one, probably just when he when he was on top before four, he had his he hips broke down this time, didn't have his hips broke down.
And obviously that's probably what he caught him in last time because he could have been two to situation off that roll.
But but put him back in position you know to be able to another escape here.
It's five four with a minute 35 left in the match no rhyme time, 36 seconds to use this.
You know Justis wrestles like he's just climbing rope.
Okay.
The takedowns at the top of the rope, this grabs you by the wrist and any kind of climbs up on you than he makes the shot.
And then everything is kind of a mechanical he has to have a hold of.
You had to be able to execute technique Go Nakamura will big match.
This is going to want to wrestle free this going into the break here it's ten three right now with with Iowa State with the three and Iowa with a ten point.
So it is that this is a big match here for both teams.
You begin.
One minute left in the third period scores 5 to 4 in favor of Iowa's Luke Eustice over Grant Nakamura from Iowa State got just kind of looked like he looked up.
First up was flexible Nakamura Let's go.
But flexible.
There's not much time left either.
Lots of time clicking off that clock there.
It's more of a stalemate type situation.
Well, this is going to be the episode of How to Wrestle with the Lead.
They want to get off the mat right here and it's going to hang when a knee it goes off like that.
Oh, oh, when it goes off like that should have been out of bounds.
I just I mean, yeah, he called the two uses his knee was out of bounds.
Yeah.
Both that point it's out.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I didn't see it so it looked like he wasn't looking there at that knee because it was definitely out with so.
Oh well, they still got a chance to take it into overtime.
7 to 5, that takedown.
That was his third takedown.
He's got a nice tying him up pretty good right now.
That's for the inside trip here coming.
I think that's what he's trying to set up.
Seven five, no riding time.
Eustice wins, gives Iowa three more points, makes the score 13 to 3.
Going into the break and 13 to 3.
Iowa out in front.
We're at the intermission break.
And as I said, the score is Iowa 13 and Iowa State three.
We're going to take a few minutes now so that you can help Iowa Public Television continue to bring you the best of college wrestling.
it's halftime at Hilton Coliseum, Iowa, ahead 13, the three over Iowa State.
And I think I always had a very workmanlike performance.
They've definitely been a little bit more methodical out there.
They probably haven't.
They've wrestled some dangerous Iowa State wrestlers that if you get them in some scrambles, maybe they can take you to their back.
So, you know, it's building up for a good finish as a lot of them have been.
And they have some Iowa State has some good wrestlers coming up.
Oh, absolutely.
You know, even though Iowa does, too, I think that it's unpredictable.
So anything can happen.
You know, you look at that matchup you've got to favor probably for Iowa State.
One thing right.
And a couple toss ups.
Well, let's look at a highlight for Iowa State back us.
That was a big win for the redshirt freshman.
Well, you know, all of a sudden, he set up an inside trip which caught Bradley completely flat footed.
And he was lucky he didn't actually lose back points there.
But it was right at the crucial point of the match and you end up getting the victory.
Well, it's going to be a great second half.
But let's talk about things coming up.
Our schedule this year on college wrestling is also a really awesome schedule and it continues with great matchups.
Northern Iowa at Iowa, then Oklahoma State, who has been and will probably continue to be in and out.
The number one ranking at Iowa, Iowa State at Northern Iowa, and then the all star duel.
That's always a fun one.
That's going to be a great meet.
That's traditionally that's been the number one And number two ranked fella in the country at their particular weight class is going at it up at up at you and I and Nebraska at Iowa State.
Nebraska is coming off a great performance out of Las Vegas right.
Just won the tournament.
I believe so.
And then we end with Ohio State at Iowa.
That will be a great one.
Ohio State probably a few years ago had one of the top recruiting class.
So they got all those guys coming back.
So you'll be able to get the latest news and results.
Don't forget, you can check out Iowa Public television's web page at WW IPTV dot org.

You know, Tim, one thing that's important to point out is that you know, by that support that was drawn up last year at the at the call fund so to speak, is that we have one more meet this year than we had last year.
Absolutely.
The support of Iowa public television is so important.
We're we're at Hilton Coliseum at Iowa.
I had 13 the three over the Iowa State cyclones.
I'm Tim Johnson along with Dan Gable and Jim Gibbons.
And we're getting ready to go at £133 between Zach Roberson, the senior undefeated for Iowa State, going against the undefeated redshirt freshman Todd McNeely.
We don't know for sure who's wrestling at four Iowa State right here.
This is a big, big part of the match to me.
What you're referring to is here comes me is Zach Roberson.
I think it is.
Roberson All right.
He's been injured.
Roberson And he's coming out.
The score is Iowa 13.
It is.
Roberson College Wrestling big Iowa, Iowa State meet here at Hilton Coliseum.
Well, the question with Roberson is that he made the trip last week and had a close 827 match and then he didn't finish the rest of the two duals out in the in the duel.
But young man, good healer supposedly and he's out there right now going against Todd McNeely, two time all-American Roberson and redshirt freshman Neely pretty highly recruited close by here in Iowa on Omaha, Nebraska.
From Scott Kaplan.
Nice two points.
Roberson Nice head shot.
A lot of pressure right away on put on by Roberson on the freshman Todd McNeely.
I think this is the position where he's improved the most on over his career.
He's always been pretty good out there physically on his feet.
Always said that nice little slip, drag or shuck move on his feet.
But he's gotten tough in the top position.
He really finished out last year's NCAA tournament, getting a lot of back points.
McNeely, also undefeated, is 3.0 in this young season, fresh off, getting his first big test here, wouldn't you say?
Oh, absolutely.
Almost looks like two different weight classes here.
What are some of these kind of draping all over him?
But that is a real critical part of the match right here.
Good guy.
Doing a good job.
All right.
Good leverage there.
He didn't look like even lost control when they off the match right there is Tom Brand yelling support to his young 133 pounder stepping in for Cliff Moore, who's moved up to 141.
We'll see him in just a little bit.
You have one of these classic freshman versus senior matchups, and there's no reason why Roberson should let him go in this situation mentally because, you know, that's usually where freshman struggles in this down position.
Well, the other thing, there's no reason that it's anyone's meet yet and what better person to the person the team behind Iowa State back in it than the senior than the veteran needs to do whatever it takes to make this match is he's doing a job of riding right now controlling that ankle.
I don't know if they're going to let him that it is a very knowledgeable fan base in in Iowa, Iowa State, Iowa.
The Iowa fans travel well.
I just heard somebody say, what's he got to do?
He's got to get him out the ankle, you know, And so you're not going to get away with him.
Good job, right?
You know, right there.
That's just a great example of a riding.
You people think riding is all upper body and you're squeezing the guy in.
But Roberson did that all with footwork.
You know he fouled tripped and Braxton but you just gets gets mentally down at the edge and you guys already a minute 40 writing time for Roberson so he is gained advantage with writing time already in this first period at £133 six and actually made in the score Iowa 13 Iowa State three.
Those big tag match for Iowa State to get back in the match meet different body types here big time caught the ankle there when he was almost out there he's not is moving but he's keeping his hips back on.
You make the point both of you made the point so often, young freshman, that's where he's going to have to He's going to struggle and he's going to have to make the greatest improvement is underneath at the college level.
Either that or he gets so good that nobody takes you down and they don't expose you to it.
And that's where you wear people out.
Because McNeill has been struggling on the bottom.
It's not like he's laying there.
He's been working hard too.
So and it's getting easier for Roberson right now.
And right up front worrying about them all in one more.
I'm not so sure that he's really stalling underneath there versus getting overpowered, getting overpowered.
And really, if you look at real closely, Zach Roberts's chest hasn't gotten too far away from the back of of waist, the waist line of an elite four.
Now, they went the other way.
Yeah, that's the old edge of the mat Express thing to double stall call that look hard.
Look at that.
Look at that.
He got one.
He got why he got one.
Yes he is a big Yeah.
How how huge.
Wow.
There's Tom Brands.
We got the chance to talk to the assistant coach on being named Olympic coach and they got rid of Chuck Todd.
Well I think the significance is obviously 2000 for Athens.
That's important.
It's a big job and with the right plan and getting the athletes to believe in themselves and wrestle their match, I think we would have tremendous success.
And I really like his laid back style.
Yeah.
Oh, man was right there.
I mean, you know what's going on with Hound Dog Brand?
You know what he wants and expects?
I mean, I don't think the wrestlers are going to have an excuse of not being communicated directly with, Oh, three, two, one.
Oh, wow.
Oh, wow.
Look at that.
Roberson was all the way behind many, many he was able to slip out.
This is opportunity for mainly to do something here get back on his offense and then Roberson did a nice job of cleaning him out just just doing a great job of head shot.
Great job.
And this is just a matter of points.
Roberson And now what is Iowa State coaches?
It looked rather easy there.
Do you think about a few more points there or if there's one point that was quick Yeah, I think just building back up to his base is not like like you're looking at a lot of back you techniques that are going to take the man to his back.
You're looking at riding and so it's that's a lot of stall warnings and points for just what we've seen here.
Well, you guys got me a little bit.
Is that a like for Mike Allen?
No, no, it's not.
But it's just like you're always going to hear that.
It's just like you kind of feel for the young guy being down there.
But we've all been out there and had that happen to us, but we don't have anyone that's Olympic coach in the past.
I don't think Dan's had that happen, but I've had games this year on the job.
I mean, he makes the score 62.
What I liked about that is he really did a good job keeping his head up and then he got his hips out.
So he's got to keep oversight off his head.
Yeah, really getting his head out of position.
Now.
Here's his chance to score.
Yeah, it is right there too.
And he just.
Wow.
Took advantage of it.
Yeah He's a couple of good.
Yeah, great.
Call him.
I mean, you saw it right there at the edge and manually felt it and executed it.
Vanilli has only had two opportunities his feet to score and he's been in this position and this is big watch the big step here was down Yeah right there.
He's got it right in there Locked down.
Yep.
Oh, wow.
Wow.
I didn't see it.
You slept right down.
But on top of it, Mike Allen catches lock pants, overlapping hands and gives the penalty point.
You cannot do that when you're in a riding position without a pin hold.
And Manila gets penalized, Roberson gets one.
Everything's quick.
He's dangerous about both.
These guys are doing a good job just scrambling.
Nice shot again, nice scramble by Bonilla.
And once again, the head up.
He keeps his right hand right here to keep his head up.
That's going to allow him probably finish this technique.
Two more points for Roberson.
Zach Roberson, three more big points, potentially dangerous.
Mike Allen says start over.
The score is 9 to 4.
Now we're in the third period Look at this keeps his right hand on the mat that allows him not to roll back around with Neely, which he's trying to bring him back and allows him to bring his hips out and turn back into him.
But keep your head up.
And those hip, two hip scrambles, you got a good chance of winning them.
It seems like what talking about, Jim, a young wrestler, could even actually think about it as a practice in wrestling is my head above the other opponent's head?
Is my head major here?
I want to let him go.
Go down, move the 39 to 5 after the escape given to manually by Roberson.
Don't stop.
Don't start.
Mike Allen saying don't stop.
And that's really what the Iowa State coaches want to say to Roberson right there we see manually put it doing that he stops it puts his head down you're over so it's pretty wise there.
He head to the edge of the mat.
He is burning clock right there.
These are shots.
So not a lot of operating fire.
Riding time can't be a race that the score effectively is 10 to 5 in the third period.
That is over 3 minutes of riding time by Roberson.
He's just trying to score and he got a major.
Yeah.
And what he's going to need a takedown in back points or a couple of quick takedowns.
Oh he's doing a good job of head ducking.
But you know, so far it's been the same technique every time I don't see it, you know, the big variance there and the times that Roberson has gone to the leg, it's been kind of hang on for a little bit.
So the rest of the women in he's found a way to hang in this match.
It's only basically a five point spread not much time left 30 seconds left and it is again Roberson looking like he is going to be holds on here going be the second cyclone to get a victory against the Hawkeyes in six matches.
Well he's not able to penetrate.
He is hitting it.
It's looked like a brick wall there.
But no matches just about over here.
Zach Roberson, the the victor for Iowa State gets three more points for the cyclones on the board and that makes the score 13 to 6 after six matches.
Godwin in his debut in the Iowa State series as a freshman, goes up against a senior and gets beat.
Nice 10 to 5 Victory by Zach Roberson Again the score Iowa State six Iowa still leading with 13 points.
We're going in to the £141 match here at Hilton Iowa.
Iowa State that will pick Nate Gaelic from Iowa State, a sophomore against the senior Cliff Moore for Iowa, but for that, let's go.
Oh, here we go again.
It's Cliff Moore, the senior, two time all-American from Iowa, going up against Nate Gaelic from Iowa State.
The sophomore should be a good one, and Iowa State needs to take advantage of their opportunity here in the next three four matches.
Dan, we're joined right now also by someone who is very familiar with this Iowa State event and Hilton and a carver, the also Olympic coach and freestyle coach for the USA Wrestling, Kevin Jackson.
Welcome.
Go.
Oh, good.
Scramble action.
Whoop, Great scramble action.
Two points.
First, wow.
Wow.
This is the match.
Now, this is the kind of you little cavity I'm getting up to be back in the.
Yeah, come on.
I went.
I broke it.
Go at it.
We brought you over here to talk to you.
We are going to talk to you now.
It's getting ready.
Yeah.
This match started out.
Lots of good action.
Every match has been good so far.
This bring back a lot of memories, Kevin.
Oh, a lot of memories.
This is a big time event.
Big time.
Meet two great teams going at it.
You just can't beat it.
Russian action.
Well, you know, then going to the matches for a minute.
Nate Garlic needed to come out like this.
Absolutely.
You know, they've been wrestling good matches, but they have been coming out like this.
They've been ended up.
As the match goes on, something would happen.
That weight or something like this, the first time they've come out and they've really went after it.
Well, he came out and got his points right away, which is kind of unusual for the last few matches.
Guys have been kind of hanging out, waiting around and waiting for the last minute to score.
I think coming out with this strategy is even better.
Oh, I think it's what the sport needs exactly.
A lot of pressure being put on by garlic there and flip more upper weight class from the last two years at 141 Looks good that day like a sophomore going up against the season, two time all-American up 2 to 1.
Now we're only a minute into the first period.
Kevin, you're into town to obviously take in a great dual meet, but also you got recognized here by Iowa State, your alma mater.
I actually came in to work with some of the athletes Kelsey Anderson, Chris Bono, Joe Williams.
They're all in the area.
So I came in a little early.
I want to see the match.
Do I want to come in and work with those guys?
You have a couple of weight classes.
We have to qualify for the Olympic Games and Joe Williams and Chris Bowen, they have weight class that they have qualified for the Olympic Games.
The team in the crowd that oversee their training for the weekend as well.
Now you got those guys fired up to go get those spots for America.
We hope.
I mean, we hope so.
I think I got two of the best guys that we have to offer to go get it done for us.
They're definitely capable.
So I think I think we'll get it done in that first qualifier.
It has to make you feel good.
Have two seasoned guys like that in that position because you're right.
I mean, they've been there, they've been around, and they know what needs to be done.
And it is very important for us to to have all seven weight classes qualified.
Obviously, like you said, I feel a little bit more comfortable if we did have all seven qualified right now.
But I'm pretty confident that Joe and Chris will go over to US hockey and get it done for us.
I'm excited about this match right here.
I mean, they're going at it.
Two, two, one.
Still a minute left in the first period.
Nate Gaelic came out, got a quick takedown for the Cyclones, put them up 2 to 1 and more escape about another minute into the match.
And there is.
Kevin said they're getting after it.
The scores 2 to 1 score is 13 for Iowa, six for Iowa State, and we're in the seventh match of the evening between Iowa and Iowa State.
I don't know much about the Iowa kid, but Nate was on our university world team, our junior world team that went over the Turkey and Russia in the world championships.
So I've seen him a little bit.
How'd he do over there?
He he went to until he was one match from placing one match room advancing to the top eight.
And he had some good competition.
I don't.
Oh, this great shot.
Look at this.
Whizzer wood action.
Right, action.
12 seconds left is the big 10 seconds.
They That was.
Look at this.
Look at this.
Look at this.
No Boise doing that, Whizzer.
Yeah, yeah.
Big time.
Big time.
Unbelievable story.
I think Iowa kid actually it was in the better situation to score and Nate really fought him off Iowa maybe should have created a little bit more pressure here and he might have had to get that takedown.
And he did a great job defending came up a little high there to allow that wizard to get in there.
If that had been a Sanderson shot, he'd have been at the knees and below and it would have been a Whizzer.
He definitely would have been in a better situation to score with the pressure.
I agree, Coach.
We're being visited by Olympic freestyle coach Kevin Jackson, also several time all American for Iowa State and familiar with my broadcast partner Dan Gable, both at the USA Wrestling Olympic and back in your old college days.
Yeah, yeah.
Kevin is Jim right?
What do you tell these guys about your experience here at Iowa State coming from LSU?
Oh, it was a step up from where I came from with LSU.
You know, I was there for three years, came into a program that was established that was strong with expectations and being NCAA champions.
And I'm going to just pump this a little bit because I was on that last game and 87 they did beat I Want to Do It, and then we went on to be National become National Champions that same year.
But coming back here brings back a lot of memories, and I haven't been back from Iowa.
I would say do it for a while.
And have they always been this intense since I've left?
So this one's this one's pretty intense.
Well, this match is intense.
Well, and they've been intense.
It's just it's gone so much Iowa's way.
30 straight match.
Yes, Iowa's won, but it was none other than my other broadcasting partner.
Who's your coach?
Jim Gibbons.
The last time that Iowa State won.
Right.
Right.
Kevin was the captain of our championship team that year and was NCAA runner up.
And we had four champions on that team.
And I think he the guy that helped us get it over the hump.
But we had a real strong team and we're our expectations were high not only to be I want to do it, but also being a year champion with those goals and now it's a new day in the Iowa State trying to trying to break that streak.
I know Coach Gable doesn't want to hear that, but who was the coach for the Hawkeyes in those days?
I think it was gold, Gable.
I think it was coach.
I started right after that.
15 seconds left in the second period.
Score 3 to 1 in favor of Gailey over Moore here.
And it's a real important match for Iowa State right here.
They'd be right back in it with a big win by Nate Gay Lake here, 101.
I was just thinking that I think the difference between the matches when Gayle again opportunity to score he actually capitalized on it but the other job did not lose this right here.
What a shot.
Oh, I wish I still look like that.
Kevin Jackson in Iowa State uniform right there.
And there he is looking at that's good technique game I wouldn't do back was are you sure?
I got that.
Hey I became that kind of stuff.
We got some guys with some skills on the Olympic team and I think they have the skills to actually win.
Hopefully we'll we'll get it done.
And in Athens too quick, right?
Okay.
Well, I know I know that I'd be inspired if I was on that Olympic team with you, Coach and Kevin, you and Tom and Zeke going, Adam, congratulations on the the job you're doing with USA Wrestling.
The Olympic team development.
And we just thank you for coming over and saying hi to.
Thank you.
Thank you.
I appreciate being here.
Oh, that's loud.
Thank you.
Got it right.
And only has a few more seconds to get right to.
He's a few more and he's got the writing time.
He has.
Didn't get it.
Didn't get it.
Wow.
Get it.
50, 58 seconds.
Yeah.
This is a match.
This is the best match of the evening as far as what I'm talking about to the public.
These boys, young came out and they've been battling one match.
And equality is good.
Two qualities.
Good.
Very good.
Well, Moore has a chance right here.
Make the takedown and get the win.
But oh, no.
Single side again.
That's what he started the match with.
He's got a good single shot.
Whether he can cut the corner or whether Moore stays square with him.
Look at that shot.
Look he got by Dailey.
Wow, What a Freddie, what a finish.
And he's going to get right time here.
We talked.
It's not over for me.
He's got right time a minute.
Nine.
What happened?
One point escape.
Five, three.
He's going to at the minute.
Nine.
Right.
Then Moore got to pick it up.
Well, from Gaelic standpoint, he just needs to keep the offense going.
That's been his best.
Well, he's had two good shots and took the score.
Yeah.
You know, when you move up away like Moore has, that's probably the first thing that got to be concerned about.
These guys are a little bit when they get on your leg at your defense.
Suffering he blew through in there wouldn't you think the biggest mistake Gregory can make is if he does not keep going, he's got to stay on out here on the attack.
Yeah.
And you know, another thing, he's got the crowd.
Iowa State is excited right now?
The Iowa State fans are excited.
They're into this man huge swing match right here.
You got to take him down.
But within 10 seconds, do.
It's like he's holding off right now.
But referee's going to get involved here, Pastor.
That's right.
I should already hit him.
There it is.
But it's still not going to make a difference.
It's a warning.
20 seconds left.
He's doing a good job of squaring.
He just looks a little more physical as far as his hips and explosion.
So far, there's a good shot by Moore, but he's not getting down, you know, 9 seconds.
He's got it.
If if he could give up a take on couldn't give it back point though.
And there's probably going to be a point against him.
No huge, huge win for.
Wow Iowa State Now back in this meet we said they had some great matches coming up and now a couple of big exciting matches with freshman Nate Gaelic Flip Moore, the senior and his last dual meet against Iowa State, goes down a two time all-American cliff Moore loses to Nate Dailey to sophomore, puts Iowa State back in six three Gaelic over Moore scores 39 now Iowa but Iowa State coming back strong with two straight wins.
I think Gaelic, when he looks at those films, is going to sit there and go, Hey, the best place I could be is in on those legs.
I think that really you know, he could continue to do that all match.
He had a good a good set up good shot.
Yeah.
And he had a struggle over the finish but yeah, he blew through him actually more when he was shooting in on him.
He was hitting like bouncing.
He bounced off, he hit him high at the hips and that's not a good place.
Specially when you're going up away.
Well, here we go.
We've got the start of the Polson area era, and here comes Trent Paulson.
Pitino as a freshman going up against the sophomore.
Ty Eustace used to start a little slow this year after kept him out or kept him from practice in earlier in the year.
But Trent Paulson starting anything but slow down ten and up Council Bluffs, Louis Central High School.
Blue Earth, Minnesota versus Blue Earth, Minnesota.
Ty Eustace, the younger brother of Luke Eustace, who we saw at 125 with a big win.
The Hawkeyes.
Here you go.
Look up.
This is another one of these matches that could be a little strategic, unlike the last one.
The last one was my my kind of match, except for, you know, it's like probably not enough execution of enough attempts.
I think Gaelic was two for two more, had one real good shot, and then he had another pretty good shot that bounced off him.
And then Gaelic did what he needed to do at the end, Right.
Which was in control.
But they were hand fighting and they were moving good and actually 33 was a pretty good type of match to where Roberts had come out and focused on scoring right away.
And and, you know, those type of matches make for good entertainment, the fans, because both athletes, you know, are really kind of battling back and forth.
And, you know, they're fun to watch right here.
Dan, Iowa State, you'd have to say from the early season, as the freshman have gone, so has Iowa State.
Well, that's what's going to be the issue tonight.
Back us with the wind earlier here, the Paulson twins coming up.
You know, there's fun parts about that.
And then there's a tenuous parts about depending on freshman.
But that's where Iowa State is right now.
The fun part is if they're good, they're going to be good for a long time.
And that's what Bobby's by smile about.
Now, this last match they had came down to Ryan Paulson Road use this entire period when even there was no Ryan time.
So so are we going to see is not choose to go under.
Oh I'll say well sometimes you have yes depends on the situation but but you know I would assume that he would like to not have to go under if he got ridden the last time.
But who knows?
Zero zero, neither wrestler really getting in or close to any kind of takedown.
So far, the score is 13 to 9 team wise in favor of Iowa.
This is the eighth match out of ten.
And Tim Johnson, along with Dan Gable and Jim Gibbons at Hilton Coliseum for the Iowa State dual meet Trent Paulson, the redshirt freshman going up against Ty Eustace, the sophomore.
We've seen some young wrestlers it was a sophomore Nate Gaelic for Iowa State who just had a big victory over the veteran Cliff Moore for Iowa to keep Iowa State in this meet third in getting good, Looks like no score is going to be scored here in this first period.
And Jim Gibbons is standing by with an interview.
Thanks to him.
I'm here with Nate Gaelic and Nate.
Good match there.
Who took it up against the all American And your thoughts or you just came out there like you're shot out of a can and give us your thoughts.
I was pretty happy with the way I wrestled mostly the big confidence booster for me, you know, coming the beginning of the season had kind of a rough, rough two matches.
Since then.
I've been picking it up nicely and hopefully, you know, keep it going for the rest of the year.
Oh, big match and big win here tonight.
Congratulations.
Thank you.
Well, what he was talking about there is Nate Gaelic lost his first two matches of the year and now he's come back and he's kind of on a roll, winning a lot.
And and I would say that is a big confidence builder when you darn well Absolutely.
Just being a two time all American.
Right.
Was pretty highly touted.
So has beaten actually even though they beat the national champ last year and the national runner up and weight during the year.
So he's he knows what it's like to beat great people go Guy Justis here for Iowa giving up an escape to Trent Paulson tomorrow my state so that the Iowa state wrestler goes out ahead one zero where it was all about getting back to Nate Gaelic there it just looks like he's the right size for the for the class there.
Just, you know, he didn't look overly tired either.
No, he held up pretty well there for a while.
I had a hold of him there.
He's all muscle, obviously.
He's a trim down the last 43 seconds left in the second period.
Mike Allen just tells both of the wrestlers on the match to get a little more action.
It's one zero in favor of PALSSON from Iowa state courtesy of an escape allowed him by Ty Eustace who oh on comment you see freshman that are successful usually the common denominator is they're just so you know physically strong and these these Paulson boys have the camp they have the wow physical stature warning on time good job by Paulson keeping the pressure on had him off balance followed through the out of bounds that's why he got the star really wasn't stalling just pushing him out but he didn't he made him look bad.
Let's get a good job on the edge there.
Well, Trent Paulson was an amateur wrestling news high school all-American, the two time Iowa State champion and three time junior national Greco-Roman champion.
He had quite a high school career, along with his brother, Ray.
Here he is in high school right there.
We had an opportunity, Jim, to see him.
And there he is, Coach Lou Massey, Steve Mathis, Massey excuse me, Gregory Paulson.
Okay, let's he's going down.
He goes down and he got ridden out last time, right?
And so here we go.
Oh, he's not moving much.
He's trying to protect the leg coming in.
And he didn't he didn't protect it.
Got the heel in there.
Yeah.
Trent's and Paulson is not lacking for confidence.
You know, they'll like what happens.
We're going to call a stalemate there.
The crowd's not going to like that.
Crowd's going to be a factor that affect Mike Allen eventually.
Why not?
Supposed to?
But make a point here is that, you know, you're trying to use this get guy to get his hips out.
I did this.
He had he settled in there.
Now he's got to go towards ahead.
He's got to face him.
Actually got to get your back off the side.
Well, head down again.
Head down.
His elbows are out.
Is Risser in?
That's just a it's a tough position to be in.
It makes it very easy for the top man to ride you.
You're trying to peel out legs.
Look how he's got the potential to grab that.
Trying to grab his wrist like they're two on one.
You're okay.
You're going to hold Paulson's in control here.
Stalemate, guys.
Wow.
I point out something right from the start.
Here, use this as his elbow is out.
And I use this right there.
Yeah, His elbows are out.
He's going to go up against a guy who's going to bring those legs in.
You want to close up that pocket a little bit, bring those elbows in caution.
Say good.
Why the elbow on 43 seconds of riding time?
So he needs to ride for 17 more seconds to get that riding Go I his ball in his lap needs to take a little bit looser.
Yes he hits a low that little separation there.
Look at this.
Oh got away 5655 No rides.
I don't get what what what's going on in 57.
I know he should be riding time.
I looked up it was I screwed it up there now should be right now but there was like 57.
They hit the wrong button.
They went down.
Yeah.
57 mono use this.
That was a big escape here.
The mike escape.
So I was the difference last time.
Escape.
So now I'm one of these matches that could see the all the.
We could have to explain our signal.
Right.
Possibly.
There is no the time.
Go guys is tied up.
Okay, guys.
Yeah, let's get it right.
57, I guess it doesn't make any difference.
Yeah, it does.
Got to keep track of it.
Yeah, There they go.
I put it up.
They're going to stop a 56.
That's close.
I already said Now, son.
Victor, right now, actually we're in sudden victory.
Whoever's got the best shot, whoever you know or makes the worst shot, one of those things or we're going to see one of these over time.
First, anything can happen.
Technical delays and stall calls, things like that.
But usually try to let the wrestlers decide if they're is the possible down to 5 seconds.
So it looks like we're going to have our overtime.
So overtime is going to be a sudden death, sudden victory.
One minute.
That's how it the first.
Here we go.
Okay, tell us, Dan, then the second, third period will not be a sudden victory.
The heat get a chance on the bottom and they wrestle the whole time until that 2 minutes are gone.
Unless there's a fault.
Then you see what the score, the match matchup.
Then you start all over again time.
So we can end it right here in the first minute with the score, right?
If it does not end, we go into the second and third periods.
If there's no pin, if there's no pin and we wrestle it just like a man but it's only one minute 30 seconds underneath each guy, you could choose whatever position you want.
Well, they turned it into like, kind of like the overtime in football here where both teams have a chance at the ball.
However, the chance to go, that only happens twice to only get two of those overtimes.
And then at the end, the second one, you figure out who has the most right in time.
Whoever has the most right time wins right now.
There's a tie there.
I'm not sure I quote it on that.
You got to get out of there.
So feeling like sudden death right now?
Well, from I've seen it use this is up to him to probably try to win this thing on his feet that would have the advantage on the mat There's a warning against used to use this one time 30 seconds left in the first overtime period.
Any score that happens here, the match is over.
Well, look at this.
There's a score right there.
And he keep going through.
You keep going.
That's it.
Yeah.
Wow.
Inside trip.
Another inside.
Inside trip.
Another freshman.
Right.
Showing no respect here.
Basic Instinct, Right.
Just out there fending off the shot of Eustace jacked him up and went right for the inside trip Who?
Wow, that was so quick.
I have one.
I want to see it again.
I'm sure we will bring Colson.
Big victory.
Like you said, he's going to see a lump or a bear hug I face.
Yeah, he's jacked him up.
This is only just, I think came up and locked his hands right there.
Pull him right?
Yeah.
Right.
But he had over and under.
But I guess not just.
Yeah, yeah.
He's the bear hug.
He was strong there.
You could tell he was strong because he pulled him right in that pull that kept that leg were what kept that leg right there just to go look at that.
Two matches to go and it's Iowa 13 and Iowa State 12.
Remember, it's your pledge to Iowa public television that make all this possible.
Want to see it continue, make a pledge.
Now, this meet is good stuff.
It is up.
Here we go, £157, the 9 seconds of the last match of this big meet.
And we've got a close as that can get Iowa 13 Iowa State Club, another freshman, twin brother of Trent Travis Paulson.
And coming out to meet sophomore Joe Johnston.
He's got a big race on Johnston.
I was going to say this right now.
I think this is a must win for the Hawkeyes if they're going to continue their streak right here again.
But again, Paulson beat Johnston just last week or within the last couple of weeks, beat him 969594, something like that.
Put oh, yeah.
What was the injury, Dan I can see the knee.
I mean, I'm not really sure when you know, when the injury was or what, but I'm surprised that that is even wrestling, to be honest with you.
But sometimes when victory or defeat is on the line, you can he's got to go £157.
He got coliseum he got thrown by Paulson in the in Omaha.
Yeah, I know up and tournament earlier this season to net Paulson winning with a five point throw against Joe Johnson He's got two point great double eight shot Boy that was set up real well by his footwork and he kind of caught Johnson just kind of coming in and then he just drives through.
Once these guys decide to move, they move and Vector is in, just follow through and make his way.
A couple of strong freshman.
Okay.
Right now, Trent and Travis, you talking about.
Absolutely.
I'd say Iowa State has shown their strength with freshman so far with Bachus, Paulson and now Paulson, too.
They've got some Paulson power going on in this coliseum today.
Travis Paulson is on a20 lead with a takedown early in the first period over Joe Johnston.
And he holds up here, it's the job he's got to go down.
It's almost like he can't fight with that name.
As soon as it touches, he goes down, has to reestablish his position.
Well, they get their hips a little bit off to the side.
You wouldn't really know what they're teaching, but they're just so strong upper body wise.
They do a good job of harassing.
Yeah, they get inside position.
Look at who's working for that right wrist and it doesn't make as much difference that those hips are cast off to the side attacking your again, the confidence, the confident look is evident on Travis Paulson's face.
These guys have wrestled a lot of matches, not only in high school, but they continue wrestle a lot of matches during their redshirt year.
I think that makes a big difference.
And you get the feeling that they just wanted that redshirt year to get over and be out here, huh?
Yeah.
I mean, they have been waiting this since we interviewed them at the end of their high school careers.
Absolutely.
In other Iowa Iowa boys.
And that no go, no grow up watching public television and and having an opportunity to represent one of these schools out here.
And it makes a big difference.
He Travis Paulson for Iowa State does have riding tag now he's piling it up.
It's a minute 15.
We're in the first period and there's no indication that he is going to give it up unless he does just that.
Give it up.
Right now, he's on he's in control on top down.
And Joe Johnston does not look very mobile.
Go stalling on top.
They say he's hanging for Travis Paulson, hanging on their feet.
I think that's a warning.
Pretty accurate.
He is hanging.
But, you know, you get a stall warning like that.
I keep on riding.
You know, don't let that change anything you're doing right now because it's better than giving up in this game.
Do you think he's doing a good job of controlling that good job of hooking that ankle, keeping the weight on the head, Give him fourth grade, get him down Now is hard.
Why Bowl them down.
Oh oh.
Two warnings now, one to each wrestler.
Stay tuned after coverage of this Meet for great musical entertainment regular guy Andre Andre performs from Dublin at six and folk rock and rock and rolls Golden Era are featured in two specials beginning at eight tonight.
You probably should have looked at that before we did it.
Here we are at £157, scores to zero in favor of the Iowa State wrestler Travis Colson.
Now it's three zero with that escape score, 1312 for Iowa over Iowa State.
But Iowa State has been roaring back.
And we have got ourselves a great opportunity for Iowa State to end a 30 match, 30 meet drought against the Hawkeyes, especially if Travis Colson can keep this going for him.
And the way this has gone, you could really even say it's been an upset.
You know, that the way the matches have been wrestled, you'd say that this is you know, that Iowa State team does look a little bit better right now, huh?
I noticed right there that Johnson let the man up and he didn't try to ride him away.
What would you think about know?
I know he's given up a lot riding time, but would you try to be aggressive on top or would you just go for the cut?
I think Joel has to wrestle where he feels best.
And, you know, watching Russ in the past probably gives him the best advantage on the field.
But, you know, I don't know where the knees, whatever factor the knee is right now, but there's a nice shot and there's takedown right there.
I don't think he gave it, but I think I think it was there.
Yeah, I think it was there.
And then he went out for the call.
Thank you, Mr. You too.
Yeah, I agree.
Where they call on the edge.
I think he had it down but that's the way it goes.
I think he picked the benefit of the doubt too.
The guy who took the shot there, regardless of the color of his uniform, that's a bad shot there.
Big swing here.
Yeah, big shot.
Yeah.
It's going to he's going to end up in trouble.
If you get in trouble here, it could end up in some serious trouble here.
And through them, too.
Wow.
He has a big swing right there in a round right there.
Yeah, that when I drop.
He shot the high crotch.
When he shot the high crotch out.
Got spun around the stage, showed him the double earlier.
Yeah.
Now I bow in favor of Travis Palsson over Joe Johnston chooses down and he has struggled underneath He struggled underneath last year I remember and he's struggling today so.
We don't want to count him out.
We saw him going out last year.
Is Luke Becker maybe not the same?
Oh yeah.
If he doesn't get out right away or then is like he has no chance to win this match.
Basically he's gonna let him go.
Yeah, I guess if I was Paulson, I'd really try to keep it down.
I would have kept him down, too.
I mean, you showed dominance in that position and guys.
Oh, there's my throw him last time, so Paulson's can do it all.
Yeah, he's going here last time.
We're coming back.
Greco-Roman wrestlers, they put a lot of time on the junior.
You got the Roman wrestling, lots of matches right now.
So minute ten left in the third period.
Five.
There's that high cross shot.
I switched out to double that time, I believe.
Yeah, I did.
I believe that's two right there.
Not a lot of time left Camacho unless he puts him on his back.
Less than a minute left and it looks like two points there.
He's going to have to get a style call and got lots of right time.
Unless he does something big.
This is going to come down to the last match of the night right here, shot there.
There's another face.
It had to go away.
And he's got like, I don't know if he's going to get it.
No, he got it.
Yeah, you got.
Oh, and the new rule you talking about is that would you go to my dance.
Yeah.
I don't know.
I have to head to the mat cause that was when I was stage way.
But that's part of the game.
I mean, we talked about it before.
Wow.
There's another.
And he's got to keep that in the corner.
But whoever cut the corner wins this, and their Johnson just lost it.
Johnson Just like he could cut in the corner.
Paul said, What was that about?
That was not a good call That would have been up.
Yeah, yeah.
Keep the game.
Stop.
Awesome.
Yeah.
Getting a chance now, is that where you were getting too much involvement there as well?
It was, but actually Paul said let up a little bit as near and far.
But he gave me one point we need to take down.
We need to take our losses.
John.
The whole nine there for a headlock.
Be strong.
That's where I Greco-Roman ability that's where the fast referee will help you too.
So that's the cell takedown is not to do it that we take that back right because of the right another call or another stall call or eight poise by the way when there's another high crotch win for Travis Colson over.
Joe Johnston puts Iowa State in front 15 to 13, 15 to 13.
We go down to the last match.
Can Iowa State stop the streak?
Wow.
Right here.
This is the Coliseum, Iowa, Iowa State.
Well, they're in as good a shape as they can be, probably with this stop the streak.
They've got a wrestler with a lot of experience.
The last couple of years has been about a match or two away from placing in the national tournament past Alonzo.
And he's going against Cole Page He's got to be the favorite here.
Absolutely puzzle yeah so Iowa State actually in the position to win the match based on I would say the higher ranked wrestler and all that.
Yeah well this will be a big opportunity for Cole paper.
Yeah the sophomore is an opportunity and I've seen yeah, we've all seen the underdog step up in this particular dual meet before.
Now to put him itself in the category like Brooks Simpson or Dave in bar you don't know what that has the model does as far as that stuff I know this is high growth and scary stuff like that.
Inside trip Pete has some dangerous stuff.
Yeah.
Now this is a big one.
Here comes Clark, L.A., Nick Potts, L.A., the junior.
He's got an opportunity.
Here we are.
The last match of the big dual meet between Iowa and Iowa State and Hilton Coliseum.
The score is Iowa State 15, Iowa 13.
I'm Tim Johnson, along with Dan Gable and Jim Gibbons.
And we have got ourselves one of the best ever.
Look at this Whoa!
Takedown Across L.A. after the shot by they page by page tape went right out there.
Yeah, actually, tape started putting him in danger.
Has wild turned it back his way and it's the experience You were talking about a past L.A..
Yes.
Look at this.
Look at this.
Look at this.
Oh, oh, oh, oh.
He pinned defending him.
Now it's over.
It's over.
He took it right to it.
And through the half it's over, boys.
Barcelona goes down in history.
Yes, he does.
Barcelona goes down in history.
He snapped a three.
You know, he came out like Gallic did.
He came out real physical.
Sometimes you have to ready like a hammer.
You bet.
New attitude here at Iowa State Coach, you don't have to watch that clip anymore.
Iowa State 21.
Iowa 13.
First win for the cyclones over the Hawkeyes since 1987.
Nick Castle.
I know Bobby Douglas.
His first victory over the Hawkeyes in a dual meet since coming here 12 years ago.
He just gets his hip under to stack him up, uses kind of a high arch and really and he kept a far half on and he tags them up and he gets the ball right where just went after he put the hammer on.
Yeah he put the muscle down.
That's all right.
Jim Gibbons.
I'm here with Bobby Douglas and Bobby before read me.
They show that clip of me getting carried off my shoulders and all that stuff.
And now the you stop the streak.
Finally, I was thinking Iowa.
Great, great beat.
Iowa's got a great team.
We wrestled real well I'm off of proud of these guys We've got a lot to be proud of You start that streak and the guys really came out there with a good attitude today.
That's it.
Hard.
They've got great chemistry with the hard working club.
We're only going to get better.
Good luck the rest of the way out.
Thanks, Jim.
Thanks, Jim.
And Dan, there was a lot right there.
There's a reaction.
Nick Castellano I thought Bobby's response was not only gracious, but I thought there was a fire in it.
But I absolutely you know, I put a lot of yourself.
I've been waiting to do something like this for a long time.
Bobby There's been a lot of emotion, you know?
And I'll tell you what, he gave credit to his team.
He liked what he saw and, you know, that's the future.
And you got to like what you see in the future if you're a cyclone right now, based on what he saw today on a couple of guys coming out and putting the hammer down.
Well, based on what I saw in the reaction in the crowds as they look around, Dan, there were a lot of pump fears.
I mean, these people, these fans in the in the scarlet and gold have been waiting for this for a long time.
There were pump there was there's joy in Hilton Coliseum this afternoon.
You know, I'm sure they would have wished they wish they would have filled the arena.
Now, the people back home watching for the cyclones wished they could have experienced this experience here.
But anyway, this throw it to Gibbons.
Let's go to Jim again.
I'm here with Nick Cassano Nick you don't name may not aware of this, but you're going to go down on Cyclone Laura There is the streak stopper here.
Your thoughts?
Wow.
This is you know the cyclone alarm that went through the dressing room and couldn't get a victory win bone on Kale Haskett mall and offer them This is this is what, you know, we wanted to do for them.
Well, congratulations.
I tell you what, give me your thoughts when you took them out here tonight.
Hey, I was I was up for it.
My team was behind me.
I was behind my team.
I just try to just like another match.
Yeah.
Speaking of team being high behind you here, you got a few other guys.
You did a pretty good job tonight.
Yeah, we did.
We had a lot of guys step up.
Y'all stepped up.
Even the guys that lost, they stepped up now went out there.
Everyone wrestled.
7 minutes.
We're in better shape.
We trained harder than them.
I just want to thank my family for coming out to my dad and my sister.
My brother sounds like a member of a confident team here.
Congratulations, Nick.
Good luck the rest of the way.
Look forward to seeing you.
The rest of the season.
Thank you.
Nick Positano, his family from New Lenox, Illinois, his high school, Providence Catholic in the Chicago area.
They came all the way from Chicago to the plains of Ames, Iowa, and they are celebrating big time in Ames here in Hilton Coliseum.
Nick Positano, the hero of a great effort by the Iowa State cyclones, especially in the last five matches.
Hey Dizzy Bono pick it up pass Alonzo there he better do that overseas when he grabs a hold of one of those foreigners.
So, hey, he was happy.
He needs that excitement that's going to help him qualify that weight class.
So, you know, that was a great victory for Iowa State pass.
Alonzo punctuated the win with the pin.
Well, he did punctuate the win.
But I tell you the Parsons Nate Gaelic, I think going out there would be Cliff Moore and also the nice job by the other freshman backs and beating Bradley but but Dan you got to look at the way these guys won these matches They got like went out there like you're shot out of cannons.
No, I think it's all the sports, 99% in the head, you know, and you got to believe in yourself and you got to be physical out there and you got to make things happen.
And they look like they came out with that type of force.
They do that type of force.
And so it's you know, you got to give em credit how you do.
It's exciting.
And it's one of those deals that hopefully good for the sport and state and and, you know, it's really early to we got to talk about that.
It's pretty early in the season and.
A lot of things will probably change between now and March.
But but it wasn't too early for the cyclones to take this lead the way they did.
I mean, they needed to get this is the only chance all year they had to have this win against this team.
Well, Tim, you and I had a chance to talk to Bobby Douglas in the conference call ahead of time.
And, you know, he had he been downplaying this for quite a while and and said that maybe Iowa was favored in seven matches.
Nobody else saw it that way.
But I know that he has to feel pretty good about what's happened here tonight as the rest of the cyclone nation does, so to speak, than cyclone nation.
Yeah, You know, it's you know, you're part of it.
Yeah, but it's been a long time ago, you know, and it's one of these things that people were just more a little bit more dominant out there, physical and hustling.
But this sports know it's it's about what you feel like in your head and and then your body will react to it.
So it was one of those things that, uh, there's joy in well, once again, the final score is Iowa State 21 and Iowa 13.
Thanks for watching.
