It's an intrastate showdown between the fifth ranked Iowa Hawkeyes versus the sixth ranked Iowa State cyclones.
Hello, everyone.
I'm Tim Johnson.
Welcome to our season debut of college wrestling.
I'm pleased to welcome my broadcasting partner, college wrestling's Hall of Famer Dan Gable.
Well, Dan, the Iowa Iowa State rivalry, you've been in it a long time.
It's a big one.
And while it just doesn't get any better than this and college wrestling.
Just that it's been kind of lopsided on one side and that's the Hawkeye side.
So the cyclones are trying to stop that today.
They've got to stop a 27 match win streak.
Let's take a look at the Hawkeyes.
They're led by senior Mike Saddiq and they've got a newcomer named Steve Marco.
Well, Mike said he left off wrestling.
Well, he struggled a little bit last year, but he wants to continue where he left off and as well, he they have a heavyweight that's in there named Marco.
Now, he's already been on the poster schedule.
And that's unbelievable.
It's never happened before.
Just the freshman.
Speaking of a lot of new faces, Iowa State cyclones have a lot of new faces, but they're led by a couple of senior tri captains and that's Billy Maldonado and Joe Heskett.
I had to go to Williams just to see what these guys looked like.
But Maldonado has been on here a long time.
He had a brother here.
And so it seems like he's been here forever and has got he started contributing right away.
So he also has his longevity in there.
Well, to take a look at the wrestler who's been commanding all of the attention this year, center stage.
Let's go to our third broadcasting partner, former ASU champion and coach Jim Gibbons.
Thank you, Tim.
And of course, we're talking about Cael Sanderson.
And over the past three seasons, this athlete has dominated college wrestling, winning three NCAA titles and going undefeated.
And this year, he's got a chance to make history to become the first four time undefeated NCAA champion.
He also made the world team last year, which the equivalent of making the Olympic team in a non-Olympic year.
But there's one thing he's never done and that's beat the Hawkeyes in a dual meet format here.
He's running out of opportunities.
This could be his last chance.
We'll see how he and his teammates get the job done after this.

Okay, here.
Your match ups here are starting at 157 Anderson versus Veach circa O'Connell at 65 versus Hesketh, Tyler Nix versus POS, L.A. at 174, 184, Smith and Palmer and Fawcett's and Sanderson at Heavyweight.
It will be McColl versus Cain.
Our at 125 back to lightweights Luke Eustace versus Ty Malia Jurgens at 133 versus Roberson and Moffitt versus Hooker.
Zedek versus Maldonado to finish it off.
Thanks, Jim.
And we have Mike Allen, a familiar face to the Iowa public television viewing audience as the referee.
And here we are at 157.
Dan, it's Matt Anderson for the Hawkeyes versus Matt Veach for the Cyclones.
Anderson rank 15th Beach unranked and a newcomer in the cyclone lineup.
Well, he's coming right out.
He's taking attack beat from Iowa State.
It's a newcomer to me as well.
So it's first time I've seen him.
He came right across, has missed a couple of shots but he's been the guy that's been offensive.
Anderson's been around.
He's he was varsity two years ago and actually lost his position to Sherk of Iowa.
And Sherk ended up being an all-American for the Hawkeyes last year.
Veach out of out of it, Springfield, Illinois, actually, Chatham, Illinois, right outside of Springfield, a Glenwood High School.
And by way of Lincoln Community College.
Anderson from Shenandoah, Iowa, an Iowa boy.
And it's worth noting that the Iowa State cyclones don't have an Iowa native on in the starting lineup.
Well, that's a little unusual.
I guess it's unusual considering the quality of high school wrestling, but I see where Iowa State signed a couple of good Iowa kids here just recently, The Paulsen's out of Lewes Central Council Bluffs.
Big recruits for Bobby Douglas.
Here we are, 157 in Hilton Coliseum.
I'm Tim Johnson along with Dan Gable and Jim Gibbons.
And we're just getting underway.
We didn't get to give you the keys to the match or the meet, but about every weight class is crucial here and bonus points are crucial.
And of course, any type of upset would be very devastating.
Right now, Anderson is the favorite in this match by the rankings.
Anderson, from Iowa, Matt Anderson put on there.
He's in on a position on the edge of the mat.
What's he got to do here?
He needs to be able to back off and get his head out of the middle to the hip, to the side of the hill, pop it out to the side that he gave him to right there.
It's a little bit of a quick call there, but I think I agree with it.
Well, they got to cheek rule.
You know, the guy can't run anything from that position.
They've been calling double legs.
Now, when you're square, you know, they're hanging on.
So it's a very similar position.
You just got a glimpse of the Iowa Hawkeye Braintrust, Jim Zaleski, Tom Brands and Lincoln McElroy having lots of national championships between them, and they are the coaching staff for the Hawkeyes.
Anderson did a good job of taking Veach off his feet and putting him down pretty hard with control, of course, And he's doing a good job of right in here, hooking the ankle, keeping the weight forward to get out, you have to have good hand control and you have to clear your ankles.
And he's keeping his weight forward.
And obviously you can't get anything going that way.
It's a beautiful day in Ames, Iowa, and we've got a nice crowd today.
What would you say, Jim?
You know, the Hilton is at 910.
I think it's at least 9000 here.
Have we got a full you know, if you fill the bottom layer here, bottom tier, the park, that's 7000 people and it's definitely tall.
It's Jim Gibbons, former Iowa state champion and coach who coached a lot of matches here in Hilton Head.
A little bit of that Hilton magic.
Last time the Iowa State Cyclones beat the Hawkeyes, Jim Gibbons was the coach.
Well, the thing I see here, Tim, is that Anderson is just doing a great job of making Veach carry his weight.
And but you see, Beech has got his elbows out most at the time, which is Dan mentioned before, trying to fight get hand control.
You can't do it when your elbows are out here.
You also got Warren for A and on top they kind of put that pressure on the guy that's on top right making pick you up or you have to trim down because it it's I'll tell you it's difficult sometimes when the guy's trying to fight your hands and you don't want to give him automatic escape.
But he did.
Warren Anderson on top and that morning's important throughout the entire match.
Yeah, you know what?
That's right.
And I think I would take that warning with only 30 seconds left in the match.
You know, that beats giving up in this game.
And he is riding top.
You did get a glimpse of the Iowa State coaching staff there led by Bobby Douglas and along with Chris Bono and Dwight Hinson, he's got to work for the fall with a leg and he's got to act like he wants to turn him or turning because otherwise, you know, Mike Allen, he calls a lot of calls into the first period, the scores two zero in favor of the Hawkeye Matt Anderson with a lot of riding to minute 27.0 takes down Anderson chooses down and will begin the second period here in Hilton Coliseum first match of the Iowa State versus Iowa dual meet now live for now.
And I think that's a choice, a good choice by Anderson to take the down position.
You know, when you know your referee like that, Mike Allen does call a lot of stalling and just go right back to top position.
Right.
You're probably going to get called.
That's one escape for Anderson, making the score three zero in his favor.
Yet Anderson's getting aggressive here Didn't know back to myself back.
Oh well this is a breakthrough match for Anderson in one sense in that the opportunity in a big duel made for a guy that hasn't really established himself yet as a starter for the Hawkeyes on an ongoing basis.
Dan Well, he was a starter two years ago, but he was up a weight at 165 and according to Lincoln back or maybe this guy's probably been in the wrong weight class, so he's put himself down at least in the weight class that a guy like Matthew Arabia coach considers being more competitive, making the most of his opportunity.
He is really all over Veach right now, leading 5 to 1.
He just gave Veach an escape, potentially dangerous there on the edge of the mat.
The reason why that ended up potentially dangerous is because Anderson dropped down but didn't penetrate.
You know, he pulled it back and that made the go against the joint, which was a bad tech, bad technical error on Anderson.
But you look at his position here, he's got his, you know, weight in his heels and he came out strong, but he's kind of looks a little intimidator right now.
Probably the first time in an Iowa state match.
Certainly it is.
Well, we talked about the importance, Jim and Dan, of every wrestler wrestling hard.
Now, he just called Iowa State for stalling.
Well, and this is the kind of wrestling that can't happen for or out of the gate for the cyclones, right?
That's correct.
You know, you look at Beecher, he's about a half head higher.
He's carrying a lot of weight in his heels.
He's he's just basically trying to take this guy up.
You know, he's got a headlock.
He could have been hitting it to the right.
But but obviously, he's just kind of trying to get out of danger there.
Of course, Anderson's got to be thinking about a major win right now.
Very good point.
Damn, every extra point is a big one in this dual meet.
You're worried, right?
I said the keys are every match and every bonus points.
And if there's any upsets, the upset here would be at Iowa State one.
You know what got you to score is 5 to 1 in favor of the Hawkeye Matt Anderson over the other.
Matt Brown, Matt Veach from Iowa State.
We're in the second period set with only 4 seconds left as we end this period.
Yeah.
From Anderson's point of view, it seems to me he had to be looking for more actually scoring opportunities, much less down.
Okay, I said goals.
You just said they all there's Bobby Douglas, head coach who won a national championship when he was the coach at Arizona State, has not achieved that yet, but has always been in the top few teams since coming to Iowa State.
Where did Anderson's already got writing time in this instance?
So if he can't turn him over, I would expect this match to go back up on the field.
If the coaches are going to do that and they're going to have to do it pretty soon.
He's got pretty good control here.
Depends on whether he feels like a tournament.
So far, he hasn't shown any signs of being able to turn those back yet.
Or rather, the referee is going to get involved again.
Right.
But which way, You know, yeah, it's hard to say.
And if you're not, turn them in the top position.
You almost have to assume that Mike Allen would call the person on top.
So now they're telling to let him up.
You throw one, makes it 5 to 2 writing time he's going to need to up But it's true.
About three takedowns.
Yeah.
Good shot.
That'll keep the stalling call off of Iowa State anyway.
Now depends on Anderson's scoring ability here.
He's he's been pushing him around, but he hasn't created that scoring situation there.
So with that bear hug locked up just a little bit high, too far away from the hips, you know, he's he's going to have to fake it with one way or the other and start snapping more a little bit more of a like a type Mark Ironside move.
Now we have actually to clear the arms and get the guy coming India.
But he has he's not doing a good job in his 50 seconds to go and it looks like, you know, if it ends like this, it's it's a regular decision for the Hawkeyes.
Of course, a lost opportunity, according to what you're talking about, from where Matt Anderson was at the beginning of the second period.
Right.
For that offense, not enough scoring opportunities here.
You know, it's easier said than done.
BATES Looks like he's tying up them elbows pretty good level.
Turn to the left and it's nice to attack the legs a little more.
Looks like Anderson's just kind of settling down and taking the decision.
Well, I don't think he wants to, but there's a good shot.
There's a good shot in a possible takedown by Iowa State.
But Anderson's doing a good job of knocking square with, like 15 seconds comes a good shot by Grant.
Long Beach has got to continue to try to lift that bottom leg.
I needed to try to put him on his back there to try to put him in danger and go like the stalemate, not only trying to stalemate or potentially dangerous little too little, too late there for Matt Veach with 8 seconds left in the match, the score 5 to 2 and right in time for Anderson.
And the season is going to go to the Hawkeyes.
Oh, that's exactly right.
And that's the way it will end six two with riding time.
The winner, Matt Anderson for the Hawkeyes over Matt Beach from the Cyclones make the score Iowa three Iowa State zero.
After the first match of the meet between the Cyclones and the Hawkeyes, we'll head to £165.
Now where we'll see Joe Haskett We know for the Cyclones.
Yeah, I'm not sure who the Hawkeyes are.
Bring it out here, Z either.
Sherk.
He's the normal guy.
But look, it looks like they're going to go with somebody different here.
Looks like they got Cory Connell over there warming up and he's coming out now.
This is one that the cyclones are.
I think they're counting on bonus points while they win plus bonus points.
That's what they're counting on.
But we're talking about Joe Hesketh from the Cyclones, a three time all-American, two time national runner up, losing both times in overtime.
And if I'm correct, right, guys, it's been so good right there.
And he did a lot of wrestling in the off season.
He was at the National Freestyles USA Wrestling and he plays there.
You're looking at Joe Hesketh going against Cory Connell from the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Connell, a redshirt freshman from Iowa City.
City high for Brad Smith there at Citi.
I believe Connell weighed in at 157.
So there's a weight match difference here with his good cut in the corner while locking up the cradle.
That's his pattern, calling for a didn't really have one fleeing the male technique on my girl he didn't know what other direction you could possibly go there you either they're on your back.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So that was about the only way you could go.
Yeah.
So if he thought he fled on purpose, that's one thing.
But I think that was the right thing to do, is try to get off the mat because he has that cradle locked up.
It's over.
He gives him that angle there.
It's.
Yeah, it's going to be he's it's going to be he's not moving in a circle enough obviously that's not really doing a job on him but patrolling the front from head looks like got the leg in tight.
We're in Hilton Coliseum Iowa, Iowa State.
You've got Dan Gable and Jim Gibbons cutting edge cutting, cutting.
There's Chris Bono, Bobby Douglas and Dwight Henson, cheering on Top Rank, Joe Haskins, 165, going against Cory O'Connell from Iowa.
Well, this is kind of what I expected to see you guys get come out there and get after it because you only mention us and support him that he's the guy that he's kind of the mouthpiece of the cyclones here.
He wants to bring that to that state title back here.
As far as the rivalry is concerned, he's never been on a winning team at a. Oh, they ever locked up?
I don't know.
Not yet.
You know, here's a kind of funny situation here where, you know, you send a guy out there to wrestle a guy that's upper weight or he's new wrestling below the weight and he's you can't send him out there to try to keep him getting pinned or anything like that.
You got to send him out there to try to get the win.
And, you know, that's what's going to open up the situation here for has got to be able to wrestle with.
He has been able to dominate so far in this first period.
Well, you try to hold on to techniques too long.
You know, PESCA is going to come around the corner and get that cradle on you.
We've seen that almost a couple of times.
And, you know when you let go, but it looks like you're given up a little bit, but you're just doing the smart thing.
Well, tactically, you know, he's got you can't stop on him because he has a scoring ability from several different situations to be able to pin what a grip to.
He grabs something.
It just basically stays in his hands.
One thing he hasn't had a grip on is the national championship.
And he is bound, determined he's going after it this year.
And he looks like a man preparing to do that.
Joe Hesketh leading now another takedown, 9 to 3 over Iowa's Corey Connell.
You know, I'm sure he's thinking about a tech fall here, but only up to a certain point when he knows in reality, the team probably needs all the points they can get.
So he'll be trying to get this match into a position to where he's got a big lead.
But then as he starts to get this big lead, he's going to be starting to close it down to try to get the fall instead of the the five point decision.
Dan is talking about a tech fall, just what he said.
It's five points for the team versus the pin gives you six points.
Every point counts today and there's the cradle doesn't have a locked up race at your base.
You know, and this is one of those situations where the referee, you know, he knows that the man underneath, you're getting dominated, going down.
And he warned him, I don't know if he you still moving pretty good there.
I don't know if that was a really good call.
But, you know, he's stalling.
Stalling versus domination.
Stalemate.
No change.
Is it stalling versus domination or is it stalling when it's obvious that you're not wrestling to score When I mean I mean, that's I think that's what Mike Allen is saying.
What I'm asking you guys.
Yeah, that's a tough call.
And it's obvious that Connell has got his track shoes on here.
He has made some shots and Hesketh responded to that.
So but you one right here, he's got to fight to get out.
Having his knees blared out like that is not a very athletic position.
Let's hear what Joe Haskett had to say about this year before First choice.
He said think about the first loss quite a bit.
But once again, that's in the past.
You know, I guess I think of them more in the sense that I want to correct my mistakes that I made.
I think he did a good job doing some things that slowed me down and and that's just how our matches were.
So I got to correct those mistakes.
But right now, it's saving as much on the pass on future.
I have new competitors, I have a new frame of mind.
I'm a little bit older, a little bit wiser, and I'm looking over my national title.
I go, Well, that was Joe talking about those two overtime losses to Fritz a lot from Wisconsin.
And now his goal of winning the national title is a senior year.
Nothing yet.
Dan, I like the way he talked about that.
He said my national title.
Yeah, you got to believe you're going to win it.
You got to be confident.
And he's did a lot of wrestling this summer.
He did well on the freestyle circuit.
Obviously.
You think that, Dan, that's an indicator of where your mind is at is what when you take the time between your junior and senior year, you put that extra time in on the freestyle circuit?
Well, you learn all the tricks of the trade.
And the trade is wrestling.
It doesn't matter if it's freestyle, it is Greco-Roman or if it's collegiate.
By the way, we had some pretty good success in the Greco-Roman results in the world championships in Athens.
I believe we had a silver medal in Palsson from Minnesota and we had two guys in the finals.
And I haven't seen I haven't seen the results yet.
Gardner And Lindland So both those guys in the finals, the results, it's over.
We just haven't seen the results yet.
In the final match.
But the score is 13 to 6 in favor of.
PESCA We're in the second grade of Lochte, and he's tough and he's and he's oh, this is interesting here.
This is interesting and got it.
And he's got the crowd off their feet.
And he's got a lot of time, that 40 seconds, depending.
That was a big Lochte big loss.
You could see that coming as he had a couple scoring opportunities.
But the way to get that he falls to the head, locked up the cradle and made a difference.
Still a little sure to he was his crowd into it and they were into it but he wants a more into it.
Well, it'll be interesting to see if he keeps that crowd, the cheerleading going on, because they need somebody like Joe Hesketh out here encouraging them.
And that makes the score.
Now, the Iowa State Cyclones six, Iowa three.
And here is the replay.
He had him flat.
He had it locked.
You knew it when he locked it up, Nance.
Well, he's been there before.
There's no doubt.
He knows how to get the shoulder down, even with the shoulders on top of your shoulder.
The cyclones out in front now going into 184, and that's Austin Palmer for the Cyclones 174, and that's Nick Castellano and from Iowa's Tyler next.
A couple of new faces here.
Dan.
Well, they've actually met each other on the freestyle circuit this summer.
Nicks was the winner, but that's different style.
Like I said, no.
Nicks is off to a good start, but all the coaches said he's not as good as they would like to have seen him off.
He's had a couple of matches where he's kind of lost his poise a little bit.
And I guess this is one that they're really concerned about from a standpoint of getting back on track that Castellanos has done a good job.
I think he has maybe one loss or 12 or two losses.
Nicks is eight and three across L.A. really excited.
The crowd there just last week in their meet where he first had a first period technical fall.
They had a 15 point win in the first period.
So he can make it happen.
Well, he attempted an inside trip off a trying to counter and underhook there but didn't get his he's in a little bit of high level and didn't get the opportunity to score there.
I see Nick's really trying to work for that underhook on the left arm with his left arm action pass.
Alonso and both athletes kind of to square, I think to get into chest to chest.
You can't get any angles on each other to get in on those legs.
Plus, Elena's from a very strong wrestling program in Illinois.
Providence Catholic from Newark, and New Lenox is Joliet Area state champion and on a state champion team.
And he's a redshirt freshman.
And next from Green, Iowa, a sophomore coached by Gordy Smith High School had an opportunity again with that Underhook Nick did work out of it.
Nick's is looking for probably a duck.
It Ronald's kind of looking for a controlled stalemate situation.
Now, guys, come on.
These are two new faces in the lineup for the Hawkeyes and for the Cyclones.
There's this job.
They pass a lot of jumping in on that single leg this close.
What they need to do right here, you need to lift and drive, put the knee in the nose position is also doing a good job of moving him.
Moving.
Nick, you see Nick's right leg bop an up and down.
Try to keep his balance.
Well, he's getting closer, though.
He's getting high.
Now.
There is, by the way, again, he's got to get closer to the hips, trying to do this.
Oh, no, not yet.
But he's got both legs locked up and he hasn't had much hips on her.
Yeah, I was going to say, Nick's got the hips into it.
He gets his head to the outside.
He might be.
He's starting to lose a little bit there next.
But a good job of getting his hips back now.
No score here.
Hilton Coliseum, we're at 109.
He's pretty good at 70 so far.
Wrap here.
A lot of flexibility there on Nick's part to go ahead mean that that ankle was shoulder high 26 kept his balance avoided the two points has a lot on showed is a half ago a good tack ability that 30 seconds guys next really hasn't shown anything from an attack point of view yet except from an underhook kind of slowed him down a little bit there.
That flurry.
That was a good technique there.
By Pass L.A., Nick's came in hard on the underhook and keep Positano slipped.
It dropped back in on a single leg of his own drift.
Sorry.
I'll try.
I I'm a choice.
I was down.
Positano looks a little tired.
I was going to say this will be one of those jam where we find out where shapes come in.
Yeah, this is going to be a big difference here.
Whether he is able to ride a pretty good rider leg in crab ride.
Looks like he's going to.
He's going to get ripped off.
Did a good job of coming back for next from Iowa.
Makes his score one zero now in favor of oh man.
Oh, you have some flexibility out there under a good number of guys.
Come on, Nick.
Pass.
L.A. versus Tyler Nicks scores one zero in favor of Nick's.
I'm Tim Johnson, along with Jim Gibbons and Dan Gable, bringing you Iowa Public Television's college wrestling from Hilton Coliseum this morning.
On East Side now even to the gallon referee warning both wrestlers.
Here is a shot by next.
And he's going to get a takedown to takedown.
Wow, That's a big takedown.
That's a big takedown in this match right now.
You saw what he's doing right there, far as the half is trying to snap him back.
One point skate skate by.
Oh, yeah.
That's his first point.
It's 3 to 1 in favor of next for the Hawkeyes.
45 seconds left in the second period, 14 seconds of riding.
Time to Iowa's Tyler next in this next 35 seconds are big for Positano I would think to make some kind of attack and have some success with it.
Dan Rather has I think I think for next as well here, he shot that single.
He had him coming in and it looked like it was open right there, but he didn't shoot it.
Come on, guys, get some action in here.
Come on, guys.
Here's the Texas single.
He sets it up.
There's another single, and he's in position.
He gets in right now Very similar.
What he scored to the Knicks before, and now you're back and he's looking for, oh, no points 0.0, sorry.
There's the two point takedown there and a crucial time to at a crucial time make points.
L.A. again, a point escape here but didn't didn't recover.
Didn't recover.
Let's go to Jim Gibbons.
Thanks, Tim.
I've got the Joe Haskin here just won by a fall.
Joe did a great job of getting the crowd back into this.
Well, yeah, you know, that's one of the main goals that we need to do, is have this crowd in here.
This might be the first time in a long time we have more fans.
And I think that the momentum we can, you know, keep the fans in it.
We can say we're in this meet the winner.
Well, you certainly did a good job getting the Cyclones going well.
Thank you.
I hope the rest of the guys can pick up and we can win this to me.
Oh, man.
Big reversal.
Big reversal.
But is he.
Is he still hot?
Whoa!
Now he settles back.
Reversal.
You're going to have to let him go.
Probably try to get back in the match.
He needs to be able to drop in and score, though.
The score is six three in favor of 80 times.
Not a factor.
No factor.
Next from Iowa, leading six three.
And there's a minute 30 left in the last period.
There you see the clock.
There you see the score here at Hilton Coliseum, Iowa versus Iowa State.
We got blood somewhere.
They got blood out there.
They're going to take a little time out, injury time.
Yes, I'm on you, too, young man.
Here's Joe Haskett, just spoke with Jim Gibbons and Joe excited about the opportunity here, but he's got to keep his teammate going.
There's Bobby Douglas talking to going into this match.
Actually, Tyler Nicks is the favored favorite wrestler blend, some familiar tunes and beautiful vocals with the unique sound of the class Madix.
And you've got a musical celebration and joy in an hour of music from the Heart Watch Voices, a musical celebration later tonight at 8:00.
Another series is going on tough right now.
Oklahoma and Oklahoma State are wrestling the Bedlam series.
You know, you'll get reports on that in Stillwater or Norman, you know.
No, I'm not sure, but we'll report on it if we get a report.
We're back in action a minute.
15 left in the third period, third and last.
There's a shot.
Nice square tips.
A little better this time.
He's still in an angle.
Fires Nick still trying to make that angle.
There's one left.
Oh, Isaac.
I don't know why he did that, but I bear hugged him right on his back.
Almost a TKO one.
Oh, wow.
Was that almost a note back?
A lot of points down.
He's.
He hit hard.
I think he feels it, too.
Next, another takedown score now 8 to 3 in favor of the Hawkeye now good scores and the right time accumulating here.
But he has to ride to get a minute, but still just read the decision and.
No, no, let's go use your word.
Well, he's had his way on the feet so far with three takedowns, another 20 seconds, 20 seconds is another shot.
The other side who weren't able to do that, all that corner on him has a lot of have to reach across and try to grab the forearm, try to put him on his back same time.
Next, he's trying to finish his takedown, which he just did.
His fourth takedown makes the score 10 to 4 with four.
He's not going to get right in time.
Okay.
So ten, 10 to 4, that's a three point decision.
Evens up the team score.
Iowa six.
Iowa State six.
The end of three matches winner Tyler next six from the Iowa Hawkeyes area you're looking at next green Iowa happy winner big showdown between Iowa and Iowa state.
There's Jazmin Smith being prepared by coach Zaleski coming out at £184 versus another new face in the crowd.
Austin Palmer from the Iowa State Cyclones.
Palmer's ranked 11th, Smith is ranked eighth.
So you'd have to say that the Iowa Hawkeyes favored here.
Smith is a strong guy capable of making big things happen.
Hey, guys, shake hands, please.
Timeout.
Palmer needs an upset for the Cyclones to get back in this match and the year before as well.
Two years in a row.
So the Hawkeyes plan on him moving up.
It's a young man that's also started well for the Cyclones.
Oh, I'd say he's got a lot of athletic talent.
Coach Douglas hit that he transferred in from DMI as VMI of the Junior Military Institute, actually redshirted a lot of these transfers, didn't they set out last year?
I understand it, yeah.
So they have been on the mat week saying they got a lot of rust, right?
Yeah, that was a good case.
The word he uses rust and it takes a while here.
This is early season still.
I mean, we're for a second week in December, right, is Jim Zaleski and Lincoln McElroy and we're talking about the comments of cyclone head coach Bobby Douglas as he talked about some of his transfers who have been out a year like Palmer, who was an NCAA qualifier two years ago for VMI and North Carolina, Durham, North Carolina native Russell Tate, Riverside High School.
Jazmin Smith, a junior out of Des Moines, Iowa, Southeast Polk High School.
Right.
So far there's been a lot of like half moves.
Nobody's really made a commitment yet.
That was probably the first cautious commitment right there by Smith.
All offense to juniors going at it here.
Austin Palmer I was at Cyclones Jasmine Smith for the Hawkeyes you can hear Mr. Allen refereeing offense offense you know he's he wants to promote the sport that's what he wants There's no question Mike Allen knows the rules he's he's willing to be verbal out there with these athletes.
Let him know where they stand with him.
Okay, good.
Not too many commitments here.
A lot of touches.
You know, Mike Allen's the assistant principal at my old alma mater, West, one of the high school.
No offense.
He's been around the sport for a long time, took a little vacation from it for a while and found that he loved it so much.
Come back and he's right in there as one of the best in the nation.
That shot that Jasmine Smith is going to counter and he's trying to get around without going off the mat.
It looks like it's going to be hard to go hard around him.
Kind of ran out of real estate there, but he was getting up a little slow there.
We're still scoreless in Ames, Iowa, at 184, Iowa and Iowa State.
Well, there's a late and we're all tied up as a team.
Six points for the cyclones, six points for the Hawkeyes.
And after three matches, two regular decisions by the Hawkeyes, one big pin for the cyclones going in.
Palmer has done a good job there of just tying up Smith.
So his shots look like they're half shots.
He's done a good job in the head, hands tie ups there.
Smith actually has had a couple opportunities.
He just hesitated a little bit before his second effort, which kept him out of the scoring position.
Great.
Can't be any hesitation.
When you shoot, shoot, you get in, you got to explode again to finish.
And that's what one of the problems with a lot of young people, they just think they've got to get to the legs and know you got to get to the legs and put them down.
Let's do it.
Come to the end of the first period, the score is zero zero.
Reminder that today at intermission, we'll be bringing you a very special profile of Cale Sanderson, Iowa State's outstanding three time national champion.
We'll show you our college wrestling schedule for this season.
Plus, we'll give you our Web page address and let you know about some of the ways you can interact with us on the World Wide Web plan to watch today at intermission.
We're starting a second period here, 400 Smith from Iowa comes on top immediately to his feet is Palmer.
But Smith takes him right back down to the mat.
Good control there.
Dan picked up at the hips, got an error really looking for a hip tilt at one count only.
You have to have two cars to get the back points.
Bad exposure, but you have to have two counts.
He's getting the same position again.
He's got the arm behind the back.
You got to keep it at 90.
You got to keep it against the back.
Doing a good job of controlling.
You got to keep a lot of pressure on the top turn to head there.
That would put the pivot point on the right side and that could put him over in his back right there.
It's close, but it's he's driving.
He's an athlete.
Well, that's really not address Mike Allen stops the match took a lot of strength and on Palmer's part of the fight that thing I think Smith had it tight.
I think the idea now for Palmer's just to not get there again.
I think Mr. Martin.
The Chairman, the Rules Committee of Oklahoma State, he said he's got to let those go now.
But you know, that's up to the official.
Well, I agree with that, because basically these two athletes won't.
3 minutes, no score.
And to this point, Smith looks like a speedometer on top.
Let's see what he can do with it.
Well, they said you have to be you know, it's got to be really, really looking bad because this is this whole arena, too.
And the crowd got into it.
In the crowd.
I get the call to the crowd on that one.
Well, you know, just thinking about what Justin Smith is thinking, he's thinking, hey, going into this year, I thought I'd be wrestling chaos.
Anderson, this is a lot of fun compared to what I thought of him doing this to kill for.
He's gotten to Rich.
I think he's the happiest wrestler in the in Hilton Coliseum tonight.
Ooh, that was relaxing there.
Hey, the crowd's getting him up to do this.
That's exactly what he needs right here.
He's not feeling so good.
You know, first time out here, the big B crowd who like him getting to his feet like that.
They really did.
Even though he took a little punishment there, he showed that he can get up and come back.
They didn't escape.
So he's trying to build his base again.
You've got riding time now, minute to writing time for Smith.
The crowd wants a sizable victory.
There's no doubt they want a cycle of victory.
They've come out.
It's a beautiful day, a great opportunity for the cycling fans to drive from all over the place.
You come down green out caution again.
Okay, now listen one more.
It's a point.
They didn't get one last night with with the basketball situation.
The Hawkeyes kind of dominated last night.
And in the basketball game, they still they did get a win in the swimming.
In the women's swimming, Iowa State defeated the women swim team, University of Iowa.
My daughter swims for the Hawkeyes.
And a few weeks ago, our football team won its it's a it's an Iowa State Iowa rivalry time.
And there's Jeff Smith.
Oh, he's got a good tight leg It's got to go across it's got a little tangled towards ahead again you've got an athlete there that's is takes its punishment but he's he's not rolling over and referees not breaking it You're talking about the crowd there's an estimate 10,000 feet closer.
He's got the legs dripping down.
Needs to hook the right arm at the elbow, try to bring it over.
But he's not getting it.
He's doing some good, doing a good job of punishing enough.
So he's going to have 2 minutes of ride in time if he rides out this period.
Oh, wow.
They gave him warning.
Get out now.
That's what I'd like.
I mean, that's tough to move when you've got your leg elevated like this is Mike Allen.
He's a bet.
But how does the bottom man move there?
He does.
And he does exactly what he's doing.
He tries to move forward.
Okay.
Let's talk to Smith about the rivalry and what it means to you is down, down.
So means an awful lot to me From Des Moines.
I was born and raised a Hawkeye no matter what sport it is, I'm always rooting for Iowa and the only team I ever want them to beat is Iowa State.
So it's important to me.
He's in Iowa and it means something to him.
And here he is escaping for the first point of the of the match that Smith escaping inside about 3 seconds is a shot reshot reshot.
Smith has to get his foot down angle There's ankles down so on the edge of the mat and it's going to be tough to finish here.
Oh, he's back up.
They'll be tough to finish here.
He's starting starting points that are driving.
There's a nice shot by Palmer, though.
He kind of blew an opportunity there to get right back into this man.
Oh, yeah.
Because Smith has given in many openings may opportunities.
You're right.
Jim Smith wrestling a very hard match, a very strong match, if not one that has a lot of points.
Good.
Sharp.
Here's where Smith had a little trouble before.
Not not coming into the guy coming in and reaching and opening himself up a little bit.
That's exactly what happened there.
On that counter shot, Smith reached in to him and Palmer was right back in on the leg.
But he's still being aggressive.
And there's been a warning on Cobb.
Yeah, yeah.
And he's got a circuit.
Oh, I'll tell you one more time backing up like that.
And Mike Allen is going to ding the Iowa State wrestler.
Yeah, it's, it's no your referee time right here at the third period and you can't be giving up any ground and across reach it There's a shot as a first deep shot by Smith but he's kind of let up a little bit but he looks like he's looks like he's getting r he's going to get that arm through.
It's not through yet.
There he got it.
He did a good job bargaining.
And the key of that technique is he kept Palmer's right heel.
Lawrence got to come out arms got to come out.
Win me around.
Yeah there's two points takedown for the favored Smith out ahead three zero now and Palmer and he has right time the right time talking about that swim meet Iowa State one but the Hawkeyes swam some of their fastest races here back I want you to know Paul when I was a freshman here, we've also kind of had a vested interest here in cheering for the for the Hawkeyes down here.
Yes, I did.
With my daughter, Molly.
Gear up for escape and too little too late right here again for Palmer, Iowa.
Hawkeye comes away with a win three win with the writing time for two one.
That was a hard fought match.
Smith wins.
It puts the Hawkeyes out in front 9 to 6 after four matches.
Now we go into kale.
Sanders Kale?
Sanders Kind of like Michael in basketball.
Everybody just knows him as kale.
LOGAN They come up for him.
They like him here.
He's looking for six, I'm sure Forces is looking to improve their guys.
Does that mean it's a family size family?
They're a long ways to go.
Whoa, He's on that shot.
Didn't take long.
Kale Sanderson.
You know, Ryan Folsom.
Like a merry go round right there.
We're at 197 forces of Decorah, Iowa, for the Hawkeyes just being taken down by Carl Sagan.
And he's honest right now.
It's something happened.
Well, I don't think I got hurt, man.
Take it easy.
And if you wrestle this guy, you probably get hurt, too.
He's in on your leg so quick, you have very little time to react to his family.
Right there.
Sander.
Super duper.
Oh, boy.
I tell you, you got a horse out of their park.
A lot of action.
That's a look at that.
Look at that action.
Whoa!
Both sides.
Stop.
It's right up.
Oh, no, boy, He got it.
That's Mr. Anderson will step over this football anyway.
You may not get a better opportunity to bend in this out.
Yeah, You know, I don't think you want to, Penny.
Oh, yeah, That was a good counter.
You know what's a freestyle, Conor?
They shoot hard on you catching that forearm and hip it into him.
That's a good freestyle.
Better, you know, look at freestyle this summer.
How do you edit his wrestling?
Quite a bit.
Whoa, Beautiful.
That would have been in freestyle.
Could've been a touch foul there.
But let's talk about freestyle here for Caleb.
You made the world team this year.
He opted not to go, but his replacement, Brandon Egan, got second place in the world's got a silver medal.
Yeah here's the replay right.
Couldn't see it wasn't just a wizard slick with his left arm is he reached across most people don't know to reach across your Windsor unit of neutral here you take away the post you get takedown and points where I'm like you.
I think he could have gone ahead and got the fall and know but there's a lot of people paid attention scores 9 to 3 in favor of Sanderson after only I have hesitated forces shot made a piece of shot blocked shot Oh boy he That's it.
Wow.
Right on the edge of the match.
Wow.
So Cal knew better than we did.
He'd have a better opportunity to pin pulses.
Tough, but he knew.
He said enough wrestling.
I've got to get those boys on the scoreboard.
I guess that's 133 straight wins without a loss in his college career.
Carl Sanderson getting the pin at the half time.
The intermission time puts the Cyclones back out in front 12 to 9.
Iowa scored three matches, wins an Iowa State two.
But the two big ones, he's got a headlock and he cut the corner, got locked up the cradle like a Hesketh rolling through and when he hit both shoulders right there on takes one second college to get a fall.
Okay.
It's time to meet a very special wrestler Who who's the toast of the town?
You just saw him and enjoying his Cale Sanderson.
A good lead in and we're back Scores.
Iowa State 12.
Iowa nine.
That was a great feature, wasn't it, guys?
I really enjoyed it.
You know, he just keeps on doing the job out there.
So humble.
And what a great story.
Here we are at Hilton Coliseum and Cale Sanderson just getting done before the intermission with a big fall.
Yeah, well, he when he rolls through like that, it let that shoulder slip through it.
It was a fall right when he hit.
But you have to hold it for 1001 one full second.
And he.
He had it right there.
There's this family, his younger brother Tyler just really excited about the opportunity to see his big brother do it again.
Mother, They're fans, Mom and dad.
This year, Iowa Public Television has been working on an in-depth documentary about one of wrestling's newest legends.
Cael Sanderson Portrait of a Champions will debut in March 22 as a tribute to Sanderson's extraordinary and record breaking career.
Stay tuned to IPTV for more information about this amazing athlete and the documentary about him.
That's going to be a good one.
That was just a glimpse of what we saw there out of this.
Here's the schedule.
Here's just a glimpse of what we're going to see on college wrestling 2000, two today, our first one, and then Friday, northern Iowa at Iowa.
Then in January, a couple of big meets Oklahoma State at Iowa.
North Carolina State back here in Hilton at Iowa State.
Then Michigan and Iowa.
And Nebraska at Iowa State to close it out.
Big year, college wrestling, 22.
I think each one of those meets can be very competitive.
I mean, look at our schedule there.
And that's Oklahoma State.
Iowa, Great rivalry at Michigan.
Iowa.
Michigan beat Iowa last year.
They're rated like three or four in the country.
Right.
So it's a great schedule this year.
Well, the websites are also important for you to know about college wrestling fans and high school wrestling fans.
WWE College Wrestling, IPTV Board.
We've got a long tradition of college wrestling coverage to keep this tradition alive, we'll need your help.
Visit our website at College Wrestling Dot IPTV, Dawg, and you'll get the latest scores, in-depth analysis and information on how to support college wrestling.
We need you log in and pledge your support today.
And that's serious business.
We want to keep this going out to you fans.
And so we need some help out there.
That's right.
And right now, the Cyclones need a little help to keep that lead going in.
There's some real key matches and one of them's coming up right now.
Well, think Marco will be interesting for the Cyclones fans because they haven't had a chance to see him.
And of course, they're looking to get a win and possibly get an upset here.
Now, the Cyclones pulled out all the mojo they could.
They introduced about 30 guys that were four past All-Americans and national champions had them line up before the the meet.
So there you see the statistics.
Score 12 to 9, see the takedowns favor the cyclones and obviously that's probably Chris Anderson and he escapes Iowa probably for the same reason.
But what I noticed in that first half was how I was able to ride a little bit better in the close matches in those tie up matches.
I think that really helped them physically and kind of wore the opponent down a little bit mentally the way.
Well, we're waiting for the cyclones to come out on to the mat right now.
And Marco, Steve, Marco, the highly touted freshman going up against Mark Mark.
Can our miles state probably the meets most anticipated match as far as the match up obviously, Cale Sanderson, the most anticipated wrestler everywhere he goes, but Steve Marco, the true freshman who's on the cover of Iowa's Wrestling Media Guide for a true freshman, has pretty big stuff.
Here we go.
Oh, they're going to go physical right away.
Marco out of North Bergen, New Jersey, and wrestled for Blair Academy, one of the top secondary or high school wrestling programs in the nation.
Whoa.
Takedown.
Marco That was one of those bear swats that Mark Ironside, who's on the referee, was on the radio for the Hawkeyes this year.
He calls Michael's tie ups, bear swats, polar bear slots, kind of knocked him to the ground a little bit.
There's a little bit of a bass position.
Michael's looking for control.
And this is a new position for Canal here from Iowa State.
In this meet particular, he's had two decisive victories in the last two meets against Iowa, but it could take maybe his best match ever to get one here.
There's the media guide and there's Marco second from the left here.
Set.
That's because they saw him, Russell, in the practices at the first month of the season and they felt like he was for real.
Well, that's pretty impressive.
All you have to do is sign a letter of intent at Iowa, get it on the press guy.
So you must be pretty good.
That's the first time.
There's a lot of weight difference here.
What is it?
Do you think it's £50?
That's what it's about to 62.
Ten?
Yes, exactly.
Hey, that's a lot of pressure being put on by the 260 guy right now.
About 30 right into the wrist.
Right?
Right.
That's good.
Good way to get away from the the weight.
Michael did a good job of making sure you get a reverse as the shot almost had another bear swats now was a two time academic all-American NCAA qualifier senior from Avalon Wisconsin Milton High School in Avalon, Wisconsin.
He won 5150.
Now he's doing a pretty good job of tying him up.
He can slow movement.
Usually what I've seen of Marco, he's been a little bit more aggressive.
I think, you know, just kind of breaking into college.
Wrestling is a little bit of a it's kind of a humbling experience.
And he's trying to do it the best way you can without was just getting ready over in strategy now or should use it.
Probably not that one.
Well now you can't take straight straight on shots into Marco here.
Marco needs to back up there to be able to clear the grip and then come around.
But now he did a good job of being flat on his.
There's Ironside.
He's the guy that's on the ref on the 800 talking about Mark Ironside, former national, two time Iowa State champion, time all-American.
Then there got another shot.
He's no trouble there.
Yeah, he's a good shot now just oh, good shot by now.
He just didn't cut the corner enough to get a little bit better.
Crowd like that Crowd likes aggressiveness actually can always been the aggressive wrestler here.
Hey, good apocalypse right now he's going to do a job of keeping the weight on the balls, his feet kind of dance and staying out.
All right.
Up now, getting points for this, though, I think all of us rated Marco is keeping the referee off him and he's actually put himself in a scoring position.
Well, we asked Jim Zaleski, the coach of the Hawkeyes, about the new faces and the challenges that that bring him.
Yeah, I know We lost the five All-Americans, you know, four of them in the national finals last year.
So, you know, we're searching for guys to step up and be become leaders.
We got a lot of new, you know, young guys in there and they just have to step it up.
Well, Marco is the guy that new face that they're expecting, the step up for them.
And he's ahead now, three, two, one.
With that escape on can our Steve Marco freshman can our senior.
The freshman leads 3 to 1 the start of the second period up a nice quick sprawl there by Marco here but he's not doing a good job of keeping the points off the scoreboard there because is relying on the defensive tactics that just aren't getting quite done.
There.
Whoa.
There he goes.
A nice he did a good hip twist there.
He slid down that time right down.
He got the key, cleared his hips a little further down.
That doesn't really use the power of his hips.
There's you hear Dan Gable and Jim Gibbons give you the technical expertise that would be expected from a couple national champion coaches, wrestlers.
I don't know.
We're here at Hilton Coliseum, Steve Marco, the heavyweight from Iowa, leading 5 to 1, Iowa State leading 12 to 9 and ten.
Score one can has got to get busy here.
Can't keep your forehead on the back.
Can't keep your stomach in the mouth there.
You got to try to fight and compete.
You don't want you're down back.
Your face is way, way.
Yeah, Back off.
Great.
You down?
But Marco, true freshman already ranked number four in the nation's thing.
I notice about that weight class, though.
Everybody's pretty young.
You've got a sophomore at Ohio State.
That's right.
Number two.
Wow.
Warning on Marco, right?
Yeah.
Not taking him back to the mat.
He wants you to put him back there in a hurry.
I think Leon's crop from Oklahoma's also a sophomore.
A lot of tough, young, talented heavyweights in this weight class this year.
So room come down quicker.
You make a point there, Dan earlier you just can't dismiss a little bit of the crowd the first college match you know, of these cautions and maybe not opening up as much right Marco is kind of relying on a defensive scoring tactics, which, you know, that's got to keep the match relatively close.
No penalty of the action.
The Iowa State wrestler Mark Canara, who has been the aggressor on the feet but hasn't been successful in actually going in the third period.
If chooses down, matches a match.
If he gets out, he's got a minimum 37 rating time, depending what Canada has left.
When he takes those shots to go here we go down and look over that.
Bobby Douglas Bobby's getting a little upset at an hour.
He wants him to pick up the pace and choose the down position and see if he can press this freshman one.
Now, the 2 minutes and now it's going to be up to his hips going around instead of a back.
Go back then around.
Well, now there is riding time for the Iowa wrestler, straight on, as Jim said.
I mean, that's just not where it's at.
Right?
Right.
The crowd trying to bring their wrestler to an upset victory.
Actually keeping this match is close is kind of a somewhat of an a it's a big time advantage for Iowa State right here to keep this six points.
Well, nothing yet.
They're going to give us time to be cradle in there.
It wasn't There it is.
This is where you know, I mean, this is the team player about you and everything knowing where you're at, right, Jim?
Well, I tell you what, if you've got to try to keep your ear, you get a penalty point here.
Keep your head the mat.
You did a good job.
Opportunities for our forehead up there.
You guys are going to hit him.
Just you're going to hit him.
That was right.
Now he only needs one takedown.
But technically, Marco was just parallel there.
Let's go.
That's one more point for Iowa's Marco.
He leads now 8 to 3.
50 seconds left.
Actually, 9 to 3.
It's a six point lead right now.
He's going to I have to let him go from my show.
The tactics are going to use on him here.
Let's go Heaven.
He hasn't come close to a near-fall yet and he's letting it go.
Oh, wow.
Excellent.
I mean, it's going to have to have a couple of takedowns if you you're 10 hours from Iowa State.
You wouldn't go under him again, though, would you?
Well, probably not trying to get away.
You got to do something different.
But the thing is, this is a position in the match that we're going to meet where Marco should face on him.
He gets another penalty point.
But the thing is, he's just kind of hanging out.
That's that's a win for Iowa State.
Yeah.
Moral victory will say yeah and he's and he's hit him with a few bare swats himself Evans not a lot of action by Marco there he's just going to take the win so it looks like he's a little more angry at a point Wow he took the win.
Oh, I don't think Marco's real happy with himself.
Iowa State.
Very respectable job in that weight class.
Marco Now, are losers to Steve.
Marco, final score.
There was 9 to 5 with riding time for Marco.
Now that ties things up from the team.
Score 12 to 12.
We've been tied a few times and now after six matches, four to go.
It's Iowa State, 12, Iowa, 12 going down to the little guys.
125 Well, we got some scores in here.
OSU also wrestle you today.
I don't know Oklahoma and OSU it was leading nine oh after three matches I believe.
And Luann Gardner got the gold medal in the world championships again and Lindland got the silver medal and Paulson got the silver medal.
Team USA Greco-Roman got the bronze trophy.
First time ever.
Wow.
Congratulations to Greco-Roman wrestling in the Greco-Roman team.
That's a huge finish.
Huge.
A lot of sponsors of our Rulon will be pretty happy.
And I take it there are a lot of sponsors of Rulon, right?
Yeah.
Yeah.
It's great to see him on those commercials.
What a great story Rulon is.
And doing cartwheels for foot soles.
Or though I like what he said on the special that we saw in Carl Sanderson, he says, You know, I guess I'm a big media guy, but you could be bigger.
Gail Oh, oh, oh.
We have couple Luke Eustace, Luke Eustace, a freshman, and Ty Malia, a sophomore.
Eustace in the black.
They're Iowa State, Iowa, Hawkeye and Malia.
Iowa State.
Yeah, but how about Eustace is ranked ninth or Hart?
I think Eustace won this one a match earlier here against qualify for.
So it's a tight match when you do that this year.
Yeah it's earlier this year at 805 redshirt freshman.
I remember when Luke was dad was pretty good wrestler Jack Eustace.
I think it was Mankato State.
Right.
He's got another brother, younger brother on the Hawkeye team.
Right.
Still the bottom here.
Yeah.
I would say, by the way, Iowa State's wrestler, the oldest known living organism, is a 4600 year old pine tree in the mountains of California.
What observations about the passage of history might it share?
Find out when Nova visits the Methuselah tree?
Tuesday at 7:00 on Iowa Public Television, Methuselah, the oldest living person ever there.
There's a match.
Iowa is favored by the ratings.
Oh.
Oh, guys While 12 teams score four bouts to go.
All bouts that to go are kind of tough, but it goes well for the cellar high.
Now, you, sophomore from Billings, Montana, Skyview High School, going up against Luke Eustace, a shot redshirt freshman from Blue Earth, Minnesota, Blue Earth School.
And it is Eustace that's trying to turn this into to get Malia hanging on to that nice two point takedown right on the edge.
It looked like he looked like he kind of just let up for a second there.
Malia, Red, you get set this way, would you, please, young man?
Turn around.
This way, please.
Green, go back here.
Okay.
Stay off the A while.
You might be a twin.
You might come down, brother.
It might be in Nebraska.
Well, Malia was at Nebraska when they had to quit.
Both brothers there.
One of them transfer that.
Still a green Heidi up, he says with Tom brainstorming.
He might have a little connection there in no time Terry.
Second year.
Where's Terry Terry's?
No, he's not at basketball mercy yet He's up and have Montana and Montana University just with David Ray, former Hawkeye and Edinboro wrestler, and they've won the NCAA.
They are in air the last couple of years.
Why Eustace from Iowa still leading two oh, with 25 seconds left in the first period, riding time starting to accumulate a half a minute for keeping Malia's head down on the mat, looking for a cradle, looking for something to turn him.
He's got it locked, you guys.
Busy day.
We're still 6 seconds left.
Four in position, guys.
Okay, Cam, it's kind of interesting.
In this race for the National Collegiate Championship, wrestling is Minnesota's rated number one.
Oklahoma State and I believe Oklahoma are two and three, Michigan's number four and then the two Iowa schools.
So it's going to be a battle to get back up there.
We got some close states here that are pretty tough.
Minnesota returned about everybody from last year.
And yeah, they certainly are the the favorites.
And they did they won the national championship without having anyone in the finals.
And their goal this year is to get all ten them in the finals.
But I thought Robinson's heard that before, probably somewhere.
But they also beat Oklahoma State at Oklahoma State last week is a tough match.
A lot of upsets in that matchup Mallia from Iowa State behind to Ohio is in that top position here doing a good job of controlling with the legs.
It looks like Eustace is hanging on to that leg and got to clear the legs get a high though getting a little high looks like he's in trouble here a little bit.
Know there's going to be a reversal.
Reversal makes it four zero under.
If I was thinking about trying to get a major here halfway through he got a 35 seconds.
6 seconds right on time.
Well, he certainly had that split.
It's going to be a dead even match.
He says we're Hilton Coliseum for the Iowa State dual meet, and it's all tied up after six matches, 1212 in the seventh match, 125 that we're in right here, a minute left in the second period.
It's four, two, one favorite shot, Iowa.
And he's going to add to it and he does well, got to be thinking just thinking about if they split two and two that, you know, major decision would be a difference in victory in the team is like Iowa state has had only two victories.
But here's the take for the cut in the corner getting away from the hips.
Hey, you just said I'm still behind.
Marshall, you have to bail out.
You talk about the thinking, isn't it?
The coaches that should be thinking here, Dan?
I mean, as far as how do you expect the athlete to do anything except look over to you and, you know, find out the strategy from the coaching corner?
Well, if there's any doubt in his mind, he looks over.
But really, you know, I expect both the coach and the athlete to know the strategy before that, before this match.
And if there's any doubt.
Yeah look over and the coach will make the decision.
But you want your athletes to automatically know what position they're in as well.
I'm sure it's been frustrating.
Is there anything more frustrating than the wrestling that doesn't look over at you when you need him to look?
Exactly.
So, you know, they kind of have a couple of orders there.
Take it in your own hands.
But when in doubt, good shot.
That missed it.
Missed the elbow in the arm here.
Key time for somebody to score here right now.
The last 10 seconds, second period, seconds, very busy wrestling.
Well, it doesn't look like anybody is going to score here.
We'll have the score.
6 to 2 in favor of Eustis.
Let's go to Jim Gibbons.
Thank you, Tim.
I'm here with the members and the coach of from Rocklin High School in California.
These guys were here rustling in the Valley Invitational West Des Moines yesterday.
A coach was down Pearson here from Rocklin, California.
Tell us about your experiences with IU wrestling.
Oh, this has been awesome.
It's been a dream.
The wrestling is really physical at the high school level.
The fundamentals are phenomenally sound.
And for us have this opportunity, nothing like this anywhere in the country, certainly not in California.
It's been a great experience for our kids.
Well, you have one member of your team here that won a championship yesterday.
Jaime, tell us about your experiences yesterday.
Uh, I don't know.
It was a good experience to meet different people and how they wrestle.
Well, we're great to have you here.
Went enjoy some more of Iowa wrestling, right?
Hey, thank you, Jim.
That's great little cultural exchange there for the California wrestling team.
Since we went to gym, Malia did.
Xscape makes the score 6 to 3 and there's been no points since so that that extra point victory now is looking less and less likely.
And now all of a sudden, Malia might be back in the match.
We'll take a job, guys.
Minute seven and right on time they've got Eustace, the Hawkeyes.
And what you are is Molly from Iowa State is a couple of takedowns away takedowns great takedown escape the 7 seconds would be over that would put them into overtime but the action has been Oh, wow.
Good reaction.
Just about had two on the edge and he realize yeah I can react here which a lot of people don't realize you got to react on the edge just like you do in the middle.
Eustice has been aggressive, though, throughout the meet match, so I don't think there's been world neutral.
This match looks like it's going to be our end of the regular decision unless he gets caught on his back one way or the other.
It was like, yeah, I was.
State wrestler has been warned for stalling.
Yeah, but go now.
So go, go hard.
Hard here.
The coaches and coaches are thinking no extra, extra points, but the clock is ticking down and it's it's more like a regular decision that got 15 seconds left in the last period.
Good.
Eustace from Iowa leading 6 to 3 with riding time you need to take down the back points for both sides.
One to tie it up, the other to get a major 131 ref, one.
Ooh, lots of flying around there.
Oh, that's the end £125 match.
Luke Eustace, the redshirt freshman from Iowa, winning the score 8 to 3 with riding time three points where I will make the score 1512 in their favor.
And I'll tell these next two matches coming up.
Actually, three are very intriguing to me, not really knowing what's going to take place, especially in the next two to meet right here, two out of three.
What's intriguing to a lot of people, ESPN not only following Carl Sanderson, following the Iowa Hawkeyes all year long, as you told us.
Dan.
So it's an intriguing time for a lot of people.
ESPN following the Hawks year.
Hum Yeah, it's kind of unusual.
They've been around for a while, the Hawks and wrestling and they pick this year down a little bit as far as going into the season.
But then like I said, the Cyclones are involved too because they're following Carl Sanderson all year too.
So ESPN in Iowa, the state of Iowa for the great sport of wrestling, acknowledging it, recognizing that and I would say it's time to consider the road to the center.
People don't want to get mixed up here.
This is not Eric Jergens.
This Mark Jergens brother.
Eric was a two time champ for the Hawkeyes.
This is Mark Jergens in his fifth year, actually being a first time starter for the Hawkeyes.
Zach Roberson had a good year last year as a as a freshman, but he was up at 141 was kind of interesting is Mark Jergens was up at 49 last year.
Yeah so both these athletes come down but he wrestled behind people and he figured he will just take the year of learning.
And we had Zach at 49 Iowa had Zytiga 49 and oh well I doubt if anyone's seen more Iowa State meets than Mark Jergens, as you said, with Eric Jergens, his brother, having been in the lineup the last four years for the Hawkeyes.
And but Mark, that's ranked 12th is making his first appearance in the Interstate series.
Zach Roberson, as Jim mentioned, was good actually last year as a freshman.
He's ranked sixth.
Wow.
That's a good action.
Good, good takedown shot by Jergens.
Great.
Did a nice job of rolling back on Roberson here to square up by Roberson and we really had him the at him off balance but they did a great job recovery that's a good good point there there's Cale and Cole.
Cody Cody, huh?
Just offense.
Would you call this a must win for the for the cyclones here?
It's somebody they've got to win two of the next three to be with the sixth ranked and the hope that this is where the cyclones are favored right now.
I think the Cyclones are counting on this match if they're going to win the league again, it's one of those toss up matches.
Roberson Been a little hurt lately.
Dislocated an elbow, something's got blood on his as far as experience, I said.
Roberson has a little bit more experience here for big matches.
Four time state champion in Kansas.
Yeah well one experience he'd like to erase is last year getting getting pinned in this match.
Thursday night discover chilling details about the mind modes and training of a terrorist as frontline follows One man from training in Afghanistan to his arrest at the US border follow the trail of a terrorist.
Thursday at 9:00 on Iowa Public Television Television.
What I meant by Roberson getting pin, he got pinned in his last match out and so he's singing from that and we'll see what Wisconsin go goes right at the end.
It was a tough match.
Tie tie match.
At the time it was 8 to 8 or something.
This time of fall when both wrestlers are jockeying for position there looks like, you know, no scoring.
But there's been some good hand fight and some good, good opportunities.
Both wrestlers are pretty good even here.
So far, Roberson really hasn't got the tie up that he wants to be able to take a shot.
At the same time, he's done a pretty good job of fending off Jergens.
His attack, once he gets to Roberson's left leg areas again, trying to sweep across that left leg.
Jergens wants to be over there attacking that.
We had an opportunity to talk to Bobby Douglas about his goals for this year.
So that's my personal goals.
When the conference finish in the top three, have three national champions win the national title.
I never stopped wanting to win the national title.
I think when you stop trying to prepare to win a national title, you should retire.
What do you think of that, guys?
Well, he's right that a shoot for the best should be the goal every year.
And if it is, it's easy to explain that.
Well, Jergens didn't get a chance to ride Roberson very long, but 8 seconds, I believe.
3 seconds.
Well, it's interesting how your paths go differently.
We're looking at Roberson who wrestled last year as a freshman.
We're looking at Mark Jergens, who has waited till his fifth year, as you pointed out, Dan?
You know, I have a lot of respect for those that can step in as freshmen.
I have equal respect for those.
Stay in a tough program for four years, not knowing whether you're going to even have this opportunity, whether he'll continue to have the opportunity.
But fifth year senior getting that shot and anything can happen.
Well, we know that with Jesse Witmer from Eagle Grove running behind Mike Men and getting a chance to to wrestle and Benham moved up and end up winning the championship something individually right in the end and help the team out to record performance that year.
But you know this again he's he's had some great people in front of him the last three or four years.
Schwab Strip matter Saddiq Saddiq.
You know coach I had a guy like Eric we got a guy like that.
Stewart Carter, you know, spent four years in our program behind Kroger and my brother Joe.
And then he stepped up there, did a heck of a job for us national tournament.
And I just got to run it all.
Yeah, they're used to game speed.
They get it every day in the practice room.
That was a great example.
And one and at a point I thought he'd never get to Iowa State, starting to make a shot or two a little bit more.
There's a good tip by Jergens, but he isn't clarinet arm.
Roberson has some long arms shot on there.
Oh, boy, I don't know about that.
These two guys keep going at it pretty good.
But yeah, I think the referee just doesn't like the lack of scoring here.
Once you step in and put this team on my third one situation, it was an advantage from a incentive point of view.
I will wrestler from in-state coca greens big crowd again great day out big crowd here at Hilton Head 10,000 fans in their game see out most of them hoping to see Iowa State to win for the first time in 27 dual meets and we're down to three matches left and we do not know the outcome.
I think a very good job of right there is going to let him go or no, you go as a shot right back into him.
But it's but Roberson does a good job of cutting the corner.
Jergens is coming up in the air.
It's a tight situation here.
What's he need to do is try to pin him right there and he's to try to pin him getting worried about being pinned, getting worried about being pinned.
And he's going to give up the takedown too far.
He's going over too far.
A guy who has his head up to win this scramble guy who keeps his head up consistently.
Boy, scramble.
Oh, boy.
It's close.
Yes.
Look at this.
Two points.
He's got a turkey and he's got a Turk.
It's a big situation for Roberson.
Scalp is back here.
Big situation.
And it looks like it's going to be tough to stay off your back.
But it's the matter.
He's locked below the leg down.
He's locked below the glass.
You had him where.
He wanted it, but now it's slipping out.
He's got to turn it back towards and say, I think it was just as big a situation for Jergens to keep what he had.
If he lost the of the I was going to regulate.
Oh, whoa, whoa, whoa.
Back now, that was a11 step.
You want to say you got three That's a three point swing right there.
Escape takedown writing time's not really a factor.
Oh, he only wrote it for 3 seconds last time, and he wrote him four.
Still got the right match.
Go get the right word to keep it down here.
I think from a from a standpoint of letting the match tick down behind it, Robertson's got to get his head going big.
Yeah, that was right guy You're going to right.
He's got a big match for the Hawkeyes here.
He's got that bottom leg hooked again here.
He's back into a turf situation.
It looks like slight now, but that's usually a good situation.
But he's not is below the knee this time.
Oh, referee, call the stalemate getting a fresh start.
It's a big match to the Hawkeyes and even a bigger match for the Cyclones.
We'll see what he does in the first move here.
Roberson tries to explode backward for reversal or get the escape.
This would be a somewhat of a mild upset.
If he doesn't escape in time, he's going to win.
He's doing a good job staying behind the arms.
That was a big win for Mark Jergens and Coach Douglas did not like to see that his brother Erik Jergens, pretty happy about that guy.
Big win for Mark Jergens.
Three, 21421.
With riding time makes it score.
Iowa 18.
Iowa 12 two matches to go and now there's no doubt about what's must the next two matches Iowa State has to win.
Here's brothers two time national champion Eric Jergens rooting on his brother brother who waited all a long time for this moment.
And there's no feeling like that when you get a chance to root on your brothers like you would know, you would know.
Four Hands is another interesting matchup, £141, Luke Moffitt for Iowa versus Aaron Hocker for Iowa State.
Hocker was an all-American at BYU Brigham Young University a couple of years ago before transfer up and nothing but wow, they had a scramble here.
Are they in a scramble?
Are they scramble and I think cycles and come out of the scramble.
He's got the two Hocker got to get some of it opened up that was right in his is a he's familiar with that he likes that area he likes that scramble ability Probably the mistake that Moffitt made was shoot ahead of the outside shot.
This is way down here, stands up control, controlling the hip to end up coming up on top off of pop It's shot and reversed to the control real quick.
Poker's favored by the rankings and yet more Moffitt and Junior College After the first transfer, he was a national champion.
First of all, look.
Yes, Look at this boy.
He rolled through a situation with a big back points down.
It almost looked like he had a tight enough to get a father three And what a what it would be for a fall for the Cyclones.
Yeah.
Puts him right back to the knee.
Oh.
Major decision to make big difference.
Guard Now I've got to remember now, Hooker is a all-American from two years ago at Brigham Young here, where Moffitt, a junior out of Estherville, Iowa.
That's right.
Watch it up and roll through.
That is tight.
Yeah, right here.
I thought he almost had a chance to get a good grip there.
Right?
To get the fall.
But Moffitt did a good job of rolling out of it.
Well, it's his time, and these are the toughest guys to go against, I think good quality leg wrestlers that know what they're doing up there to keep their hips in good position where they really make you work hard underneath.
Aaron Hooker is from Utah joining the Sanderson's hip hop.
Yeah, not too many places to go in that state to wrestle in college, so especially now.
Yeah.
He went to the only one, Brigham Young that was the same.
There.
Well, he's working hard.
I'm trying to get the he's got his he's got the hip control pretty well.
What's he need to do here.
He's got to show well, he's lost the ability of turning right there.
He's trying to turn the hips.
And if he turns the hips, the shoulders will follow me.
Oh, I was down, mate.
So these stalemate calls are really kind of a break here for Moffitt to get back in the match.
He's got he's got to make his start really work.
Maybe he hit a switch or a sit out type motion.
Smart has had a good year so far.
He's like, he's like 16, 2113 tournaments.
But he's low balling.
Wow.
Well, he's I don't know if he's Russell's somebody that rides that side that tough with that leg.
Seems like he's kind of been lost for what to do there.
Right now he's got an armbar on him Straight pointy mop.
It's over there.
You know, Hulk is over there.
The right hand side, which is making rounds, getting a little Nancy here, and the period's going to be coming here.
Come on.
The end of the first period, scores five zero.
And Holker has got riding time.

Oh boy.
He's playing his game again.
Yes, he is.
Yeah, he's playing his game Boy, back to this.
Great.
It's back and he's going to be in trouble.
Whoa.
He's.
Who's going to be the Hawkeye?
Want to be in trouble?
Oh, wow.
I didn't know which way we were going there, but the cyclone comes out on top.
Joker now goes to seven.
He's got right in time.
And as you pointed out, if the Cyclones could get a major decision here, that leaves a tie duel made out of the question.
Well, it's just a matter of style here.
And Moffett kind of wrestles a little bit like Joker does on the mat and Joker just a little bit more flexible and a little bit better in those positions.
And he's got his arm bar hook.
Oh, boy.
It takes Griffin on in there.
I don't think he's stalling there.
He's just getting control.
Well, it's a double great line, too.
That's a that's a technique that you can't really use.
Oh, boy.
Crowd up.
CROWD Crowd's helping a little bit here.
Yeah.
It's a situation where the official has to go round to the back side and look at there's both legs in.
And from that situation to block it out.
Oh he can't do anything except when he's doing Mike's got to get out and look at the other side, but he's doing the same thing in effect by calling the stalemate.
Look at here we have a topsy turvy situation.
The hips are not in control, though.
The hips are not control.
Look at Joker's right hand.
He keeps his elbows straight, keeps elevation of him head.
Now he's turning his hips and he finally gets the points.
Well, I'll tell you how long.
Any longer there he could have been on his back.
But the bottom line, he was able to get his hips off to the side and elevated.
You can't control your hips in there.
You don't you shouldn't be rolling around or back in attack.
Wow.
He's going to roll with that.
He's excited very clear.
Your wrists break the grip.
Joker's doing a good job of really, really dominating his style in the match because Marvin is a tough wrestler and he's been drawing people with the similar type of movements, but also has shown why he's an all-American.
Moffitt, 11 and one coming into today's duel, Joker nine and two coming off coming off.
A loss to Wisconsin as well.
You know, you don't need Hutton.
You need to shoot double legs on this guy.
I hear the coaches yelling at him to head outside shot would put him in trouble again.
Jack, pick it up.
Good.
Good Move by.
Whoa, That's not working.
Really nice.
Pass out the legs.
Yeah, well, now's a good time to shoot, too.
We had doubting what he was going to do technically, and he went right back after him there to give him a chance to think down.
No, he's.
He's Russell.
A very good match.
Very intense.
Coach Douglas has to be very happy with his performance.
Crowd is really.
Whoa, Look at this.
Look at this.
Oh, boy.
Did a good job of coming up.
What's the strategy here for the Iowa State cyclone with what he says?
I mean, you don't want to get too careless, but he wants to get his 15 points.
There's another point.
I don't know.
You know, it's pretty difficult to call a guy when he's got two legs in an armbar got one arm, but that's scores actually 12, all with right.
Time.
He needs a three point near-fall get That's up to two.
Kind of gets away from you sometimes, doesn't it?
And it's just gotten away from the hockey there.
Poker really looking good, cranking on it.
He is looking good in the tough but top position and particularly at first scramble you think he's responded to this this environment poker I mean it was a must win 45 seconds away from it.
Well what's the next call?
Wow.
Oh, boy.
That's yeah, that's 15 points isn't it now, 13 zero.
And riding time actually.
5 minutes, 11 seconds of writing time right now.
Well, that's that was big.
Well, if he calls him again.
Well six points.
Yeah.
And I don't think you see that.
Oh wow.
He lost the wrist.
That was the back point one right there.
That was.
Well, he's getting control there.
Oh, look at this look at this.
Look at this.
He's not going to be able and there's very little chance to be able to disqualify a guy here.
We never know, though.
Oh, no, no, I didn't get it.
Got one count that.
Get it?
Wow.
Big win for Iowa State.
Big win.
Wow.
14 zero four.
Joker puts it cyclones within two points.
Iowa 18.
Iowa State 17 six should be 16.
And that should be 717, 17, 18, seven going of the heavyweights.
Wow.
Here are the heavyweights.
Have I seen you before?
These two are saying to each other, we've got Kelly Maldonado.
Colorado's floated this would be a different story this time.
Well, if it does.
It gives the Cyclones the first victory since my partner, Jim Gibbons was coach in 1987 against Iowa Hawkeyes.
Mike Zadeh from Iowa, ranked number one in the nation, two time all-American going up against Billy Maldonado, who's 13 and both undefeated wrestlers.
The meet on the line.
Maldonado beat Zapotec the first time they met five matches ago.
Zadeh has beaten Maldonado four in a row, including two years ago, in 1999, basically when the Iowa State was rut neck ranked number one at the time.
And Iowa came in here and beat by all out.
So that was the first time.
Yeah, well last year in the NCAA didn't go to overtime second year to go a year ago sudden death and I think that it got a takedown.
Yeah and I think they even disputed that one before that on another call 1816 Iowa over Iowa State that was a 4.40, that's right.
4.1 out of five point.
That's right.
It really doesn't matter.
They got what they needed Iowa State to win this match when this meet, if they win.
Nobody has made a commitment yet.
Usually Maldonado comes out and shoots smart this with different strategy on Billy's part so far well he promises to be different.
Maybe he's just trying to pace himself a little bit in the match and come at him a little bit later.
Control in the head.
Well, they're just that kind of guy gets on a roll.
Well, he hasn't really started yet.
He certainly got on a roll last year at the national tournament this, I think, was what, 10th or 11th seeded and up placing third, third.
And he won by major in the third and fourth match over Lawrence, the Minnesota Great world.
Two out-of-staters here.
Zedek, whose brother Bill wrestled for the Hawkeyes, just placed seventh in the world.
Philadelphia, number one man on the ladder for America, and he placed seventh in the world does that.
It's from Great Falls, Montana.
Great Falls Heights earns the shot.
That's the kind of stuff he gets on a roll.
That's Anderson type of stuff.
It's hard to not score boy static getting the takedown.
You just penetrate so well.
Hey, beautiful setup.
That's okay.
Okay.
Mike Maldonado from Hammond, Indiana.
East Chicago Central High School.
Two quick green, two quick passing.
Great.
Oh, what a beautiful shot that was.
It looked like his chest was about six inches off the ground when he went after both these brothers had brothers that wrestled for their teams.
Maldonado, David Maldonado, Mike's attic, Bill's attic.
So like Dan said, it seems like we've been watching these guys for a decade.
All he had to do was get to his feet and he had a little bit of hip control, hand control, and he was out of there 2 to 1 in favor of exotic get the Hawkeye had to one one.
If he wins, the Hawkeyes win if Maldonado from Iowa State wins.
The cyclones went down the last match.
There it is good hip is good hip counter by all the Donald.
Oh then all the not all answers.
That's his first little offensive technique there.
There it is.
Ankle and knee right there.
Just drop down.
He got elbow deep around that ankle and his chest was six inches off the mat.
Well, the difference with right here, what happens in the last ten, 15 seconds of, the experience.
Do we have an interview with Sadek coming up here in just a couple of seconds and you said you're rated number one with lots of new faces on the team there.
I tend to get real nervous when it comes to big meets like this.
And I think I just I'm kind of a joker so I just kind of keep everybody goofing off and doing what we always do every day, day in and day out, having fun and then, you know, not get worked up for the match.
Just go out and have fun and compete hard and that's all you can ask.
Well, they're competing hard right here.
Zac On top of Maldonado, the beginning of the second period.
Zach Really working hard on top right, is that he's been a little injured this year and he's been on the lineup.
That's why he only has six matches.
But but he looks pretty healthy here.
Maldonado.
Maldonado Trying to clear the hips and trying to job right.
And I don't think the right times.
He's starting to get up a little bit and lets him go.
But you're right, 46 seconds of riding time there, puts him in the shooting distance, keeps the right time off the other side.
A little surprising.
No, he didn't set kind of contest that position a little bit more.
He was fighting it all the way and Maldonado got to his feet and just I think it depends on who's going to keep the aggressiveness up here that is going to keep aggressive.
He's got a very good shot of winning there.
He hit a nice inside trip, but you got to realize what the score is now.
So that was smart right there.
He's got to get the right time.
But but, you know, he feels so comfortable sometimes you forget about what's what you're doing.
And as you said, he gets on a roll.
I mean, he feels for two, three.
But but he you know, he is on a roll somewhat because he's down the next period as the first shot he missed.
And there's a situation that you could scramble on the edge.
Oh, look at going off the underhook.
He's not inside.
Nice hip to hip and drop to the knee.
Control it very well.
Okay.
Okay.
Walker Dan, when he decides to go, he just commits to it.
That's the way it should be.
It's not a takedown until you put the first down.
And so it's not just to the athlete, it's through the athlete.
And that's what he's done both times.
35 seconds in this period is real critical for both sides here to assure a victory or to get back into it.
There's a decent shot.
Maldonado running into a brick wall there.
That's some heavy hips.
What some are talking about.
Mike Sadek on, the defense on that shot by Billy Maldonado, 4 to 3, the score in favor of Zach.
10 seconds to go.
This is the big 10 seconds right here.
MALDONADO Looking at the clock, he seems to be doing a lot of backing up right now.
Well, he's just he's not going to back up in the third period otherwise, you know, Iowa State cyclones won't have a chance.
But he's got to go down.
I believe he could do 50 to 50 to grace.
First down for three score.
Iowa State wins.
They win the Hawkeyes.
When they went down to the wire you heard Zada go to his corners is what the writing time was and they answered back 52 So he knows yeah was 346 okay you're going to see Iowa State trying to get aggressive.
Maldonado is going to have to going to have to get a couple of takedowns to win this match.
Here he goes.
Sadek Usually pretty good at countering his small looks strong there.
Both guys look pretty strong here.
MALDONADO Coming down to the fan, these fans need to get out of Iowa State on a little bit more because he's got to do something he hasn't been able to and I think a lot of matches, Nance get deep anxiety.
And we're talking about Billy Maldonado, what he has to do here.
He's got to make a commitment if Billy is a good shot.
But it's a little bit oh, that's pretty much pretty much ends the match.
Unless something crazy happens.
And that's the way to assure victory right there.
Build your lead.
Don't ever forget that.
But Paul, Donald's now got to skate.
Get back in it.
What a match for young wrestlers to be watching right now.
And you're here.
They're a little bit high, but he keeps penetrating.
It's not like you shoot and drop down.
He shoot and penetrate.
Even though he's high at the hips, he's able to stop the ankles, run him over.
We're in the third period at Hilton Colosseum, right?
Time is close to right in that big point.
Right.
He's just won all three of rating times over the stage in a match.
Your maldonado's just got to make up his mind.
Here, get the weight on his toes.
We need to take his best call or whatever.
Know?
Oh, look at this.
Look at that.
Oh, wow.
Good hustle.
Great action.
Wow.
Good hustle by Zed it up.
A lot of wasted time.
Them all now knows that his defensive position 41 seconds in this victory he's going to beat to the Hawkeyes.
Bobby Douglas knows all and Arnold's got to turn it on.
He's got to get a takedown and a nearfall or a takedown in a pin that is still aggressive.
That's what's that's what's good about his experience there.
He knows his best way to win is just aggressively stay in there 20 seconds.
Another shot, kind of three shots, both Russ, another shot, that kind of another takedown.
A lot of aggression there.
Got it right.
It pretty much ends up to meet.
Unless they get a disqualificati Big match.
Big match.
Yeah.
He got to the heavyweights, even though these aren't the heavyweights there it is in Iowa.
Ryan's going 21, 16, 20 straight victory for the Hawkeyes.
It didn't come easy.
Came down to the last match.
There's your winner, Mike Zak, over Billy Maldonado for the fifth straight time and put, as we said, the streak has continued.
The Iowa Hawkeyes win a close one today 21 Iowa State 16 here at Hilton Coliseum.
Great crowd, Great, great day.
10,000 people coming to watch wrestling at its best.
Big state of, Iowa, big match at 33.
I think when Jergens win was a big win.
Turn it around.
Well, it certainly was.
It was a winner When you put three under Iowa State, take three away from Iowa.
You have Iowa State winning with Hope 1918 with Holker, with Holker win in the major.
Let's go to Jim gibbons.
Thanks to him, I've got Jimmy Zaleski here, the winning coach.
Boy, I tell you what, you kept the streak going.
There was an easy no, we know it was going to be a hard fought match.
You know, we knew they were favored heavily in a couple of ways.
And the bonus points kept it in there right to the end.
So it was we know was going be hard fought match.
And I think our guys grew up a lot.
I think their guys grew up a lot in this meet.
Well a great match by Mosaddeq the end there to finish him off.
Oh Zac's been looking good I think he's had a good year.
He hasn't rust for two weeks, so I think that was a good match for him to open up the gap a little bit.
Congratulations, Coach.
Thank you.
Thank you, Jim.
Thank you, Jim.
Jim Zaleski, the winning coach.
Fourth year, fifth year at s. You've been gone a long time, Dan.
I'm still here.
Fifth year head coach Jim Zaleski getting us as many wins or a few more, I guess they've wrestled in the National Duals, but never having lost Iowa State.
Jim Zaleski And here's the winning wrestler Mike Zedek, who sealed the deal for the Hawkeyes.
That was a very aggressive and impressive match by Zach.
Well, he came on.
He could have protected that first takedown, but he kept continuing to score and which is big for the program as far as what you need to do to win.
But at the same time, Maldonado, you know, just didn't come out like he normally did.
I think he thought I was going to be a long match and he wanted to save some energy in the process.
He didn't really have too many scoring opportunities as well as the press for that guy.
And that was a big win.
We just talked about that with the Mark Jergens fifth year on the on the squad gets an opportunity to make the difference.
Well, he I don't think he ever won a state championship but this went here it was over I believe the four time champion, maybe our three time champion.
He has four times.
And so, you know, that's you know, you get a guy confidence a little bit.
They come on.
But it was a big win for a hooker at 41 as well over Moffitt because that was that match looked like a mismatch trying to score wise.
But it was all hip position control.
The whole match was like, wow, maybe, maybe out, maybe it could be different next time, but boy, wouldn't know by the score.
Jim I tell you what, we didn't know what to expect.
All these new faces out there and, you know, just like every other Iowa state meet, had an opportunity to create some stars out there and and a couple of key performances by Zadig by Jergens.
You got to see Marco for the first time.
And of course, Iowa State's two stars and hookers.
Great performances, good wrestling out there, particularly for this time of year.
So you're saying both coaches have things they can be excited about?
Absolutely.
Yes, I agree.
I just he came right down to the wire and I was impressed with some couple kids, I think a couple of kids that Iowa State has right now don't don't realize their potential.
And maybe Holger does now.
But, you know, a couple other kids looked like they had some talent.
Well, it's been an exciting one here.
And it's been a great day for wrestling, for college wrestling.
And once again, the final score is Iowa 21, Iowa State 16.
