IPB Sports Presents Cyclone Wrestling tonight.
The Iowa State Cyclones play host to their cross-state rivals, the University of Iowa Hawkeyes.
This evening on air capacity crowd and Hilton Coliseum in Ames, Iowa, to witness the dual meet of the season.
Iowa and Iowa State.
Good evening, everybody.
I'm Doug Brown.
And I'm Dave Hardy.
And here we are beginning our fourth season of cyclone wrestling on APB.
And we're going to have seven meets for you this year and we'll show you the schedule later.
We don't want to talk about that just now because we've got to talk about the the big meet of the year.
And it's our first one, Iowa and Iowa State.
Oh, it's going to be a Super eight.
It always is.
Hawks coming in here, of course, currently ranked second the nation.
Neither one of us, I'm sure, can believe that with the talent here.
But nonetheless, as a result of their recent loss to Cal Poly on the West Coast, there are currently ranked number two and the and the rear will suffer.
They've had a suffering loss.
They've had of the two highly touted contestants in Mike, Deanna and Scott Trevino.
That's a shame.
But Iowa State has had a few injuries, too.
With Mike Mann out and Dave Allen, they'll both be back tonight, we think.
And Iowa State is now ranked eight.
And I don't know if I believe that yet or not.
We'll find out something more about that tonight.
These teams are coached by outstanding coaches at the top of their profession for Iowa State.
Harold Nichols, Dr. Harold Nichols, he's the daddy of them all in wrestling.
Yes, he sure is, Doug.
And his record, of course, speaks for itself.
And 85% win record over the years, many national championships.
And his counterpart is a former pupil of his, the great Olympic champion, Dan Gable, who will be this year, the Olympic coach.
That's correct.
In such a short time that he's been coaching.
But as a competitor and as a coach now, he has had a great impact on the high school and collegiate scene in our country.
He certainly has and he likes to win.
And also we're going to see some outstanding new young wrestlers that maybe you haven't seen outside of high school or anywhere.
And for Iowa, Iowa State, first of all, we have one of the car family, Nate Carr.
Yes.
And he's a tough one.
And of course, finishing high end is a respective high school years.
He comes in here as a real slick wrestler.
He's got a lot of slick moves and he's quick on his feet.
And he was ranked one of the top five high school boys coming out.
I think another one of them a year ago was the boy you'll see at £167 for Iowa State.
You know all about Perry Hamilton.
Yes.
West Des Moines, Dowling Prep.
And he likewise is a super competitor.
And for Iowa, Jeff Kerber, remember him last year from Emmetsburg High School, all without question.
He's one of the only two four time prep champions in the state of Iowa.
And interestingly enough, Doug, there's only about eight or nine of those in the entire nation.
That's right.
He's had a little rough start this year, but he's come on and we're expecting something out of him tonight.
And the Banach boys, two brothers, twins out of New York for Iowa, 77 and 90.
Yes.
With great upper body moves.
And as I understand it, great.
Pinners.
Well, we're going to see them all tonight.
All also the the ones you know about, the national champions like Randy Lewis.
We're going to see some outstanding wrestling tonight and competition, mainly because these two teams got together it's for all the marbles Iowa against Iowa State coming right up.
Welcome to Hilton Coliseum and tonight's wrestling match between the University of Iowa Hawkeyes and the Iowa State University.
Cyclones.
The Hawkeyes enter what they do, a record of six wins and one loss and are coached by Jay Robinson and Dan Gable.
Iowa State enters with a record of seven wins one loss and is coached by less.
Anderson and Dr. Harold Nichols.
Here are tonight's match UPS at £118 for Iowa.
A senior from Fairfield with a record of 15 wins, four losses.
Dan Gladney Dan's a pre door Iowa State, a junior from Huntington, New York record of 13 and four Mike Cozy Mike because he came to Iowa State from Florida where they dropped wrestling this year at £126 for Iowa.
A freshman from Emmitsburg with a record of 12 wins, eight losses.
Jeff Kerber, four time state champion, Iowa State sophomore from Lisbon, record of 13 and six.
Jim Lord, two Iowa high school boys at £134 for Iowa.
A junior from Rapid City, South Dakota, record of 23 and one, Randy Lewis, Outstanding for Iowa State, a sophomore from Ames with a record of nine wins, three losses.
Jim Gibbons, a three time state champion and high school at £142 for Iowa.
A junior from Cedar Rapids with a record of 15 and five, Lenny Zaleski for Iowa State, a junior from Marion and a record of six and one, Dave Brown, both from the Cedar Rapids area.
That's right, Doug.
At £150 for Iowa, a junior from Lockport, Illinois, record of 19 and four, King Miller, or a junior from Iowa City record of three wins, two losses.
Steve Curdle, Meyer for Iowa State, a freshman from Erie, Pennsylvania, record of 19 and for Nate Carr, it depends on whether Mueller's knee feels well, whether he'll wrestle against Carr at £158 for Iowa.
A senior from Britt record of ten wins four losses.
Mark Stevenson for Iowa State, a sophomore from Baldwinsville New York record of 18 wins, five losses.
Tom Pickard A lot of New Yorkers in this lineup that I have £167 for Iowa, A senior from Ankeny record of five wins, four losses.
Doug Anderson for Iowa State, a freshman from Urbandale, record of 26 wins two losses.
Harry Hummel former West Des Moines Darling State champ at £177 for Iowa, a freshman from Port Jervis, New York record of 21 and three.
Ed Banach for Iowa State, a junior from Grand Rapids, Minnesota, record of nine in three days.
Alan Allen is just coming off a rib injury.
This will be his first match at £190 for Iowa.
A freshman from Port Jervis, New York, a record of 11.
And for new Banach, that's a twin brother for Iowa State, a junior from Ann Arbor, Michigan, record of 26 and five.
John Forsey, who has filled in so well for Mike Mann, the heavyweights for Iowa, a junior from Clear Lake record of 12 wins, four losses.
Dean Phinney for Iowa State, sophomore from Marshalltown, Record of nine and two.
Mike Mann, or a junior from Lucas, Iowa record of 11 wins seven losses.
Dave Austin Bar Well I think Harold Nichols is leaving his options open.
He wants to find out.
Will captains referee Pat McCormick of Hampton, Virginia, at center man Pat McCormick from Hampton, Virginia.
They fly in people from all over the country, the major referees to do this one anymore.
And there are the captains, Dave Allen in center, Matt with Randy Lewis and the boy who will wrestle the first match.
Dan Glenn.
NCAA finishes.
Of the last five years of these teams, Iowa has won four of them.
Iowa State the other.
And if you go back before that, you look at Iowa State up there on first place.
These teams have dominated wrestling in the last decade.
Without question, Doug and looks like it's not going to stop for a while either.
And here we go, David, we're all set to go £118.
Mike Nichols in they on the right in the red, if you're in color.
Dan Glenn of Iowa, who is the favorite here, by the way, in the black and on the left.
But because he finished eighth in the NCAA for Florida two years ago, Dan Glenn, third twice and an injury right off the bat.
But how are you going to take time now?
You're just going to come to real quickly.
Okay.
All right.
Right.
Don't forget to mention here, Doug, that Dan Glenn was a third place finish in the NCAA last year.
Likewise, and the year before, the two time Big Ten champion, he has done so well in Iowa.
He never won a state championship in high school.
There he goes in right quick on a single leg.
But the Iowa State boy Pickles, that combo no point scored.
They have to stick in that middle circle this year.
The rules have been tightened on that system.
Installing is a big factor and they're really tightening up on it a great deal.
And now another injury in the other way.
This looks like a charging muscle in the back of the neck to the shoulder and it hurts to talk to him.
Pat McCormack, the referee, has a wireless microphone, as you can tell.
He's the voice you hear.
Oh, that's a shame, because he looks down on bad things just because he's in pain.
Looks like they're both coming.
Looks pretty hard on head butt right here.
Doug, It looks like they're coming in here tough and right about that.
Relax.
Here comes that move on him right now.
Notice the bar on the right arm coming up.
He backs off.
There's nothing there yet.
Evidently got a jerk on the neck when he snapped that hit back and probably twisted a muscle or something there because there was no great contact.
Because anything that if he pulled out of there in such a fashion that I think that's kind of microcosm.
We came from University of Florida.
That's a shame.
They dropped the program.
Iowa got one of those good wrestlers.
To Chris Cataldo.
He's £142 and he's at Iowa now.
So we're back at it with no score and a minute and 12 seconds left in the first period.
If you remember a minute, a ten minute period to start on the feet, 3 minutes after that, go right now.
Both boys are just kind of positioning to see if they can get in good position, work for a takedown, see Glen working off an arm drag position, kind of an arm throw or an arm drag is what he's trying to work for.
There's an attempt at a trip nine something on a single, a double, and no points yet.
And then Gable, I know, has a little discouraged about that one.
He thought it was a takedown, but it's not sure he walked into that double off a single and with a single because he had on a single leg and there are 30 seconds yet to work with it.
He's in there tied on it, although Glen's back on that rear crotch.
Likewise, tying up that near ankle stalemate, Pat McCormack says that move isn't going anywhere.
We're just going to leave it back on our feet again.
With only 20 seconds left, this is where people can get hurt and the shot is made by Perkasie countered by Glenn, who's trying to come around and get a Crossface countered what to use the crossface counter to counter it Move out.
He got in deep on that single Do as he did.
We have less than 5 seconds here.
In the first period, £118.
Glenn used a good, simple crossface counter to move out of that sprawl, threw his legs back and and the stall warning is given to Posey.
Now.
There's no scoring.
The referee has to warn somebody.
And because he got it right, that's correct.
That's that's that's my rule.
If there's no points scored or no warnings previously, get in the first period, one of the two boys has to be given a warning for stalling because he starts on top and he gets up trying to get the leg in.
But Glenn won't let him.
He comes under the legs and he comes back to his base.
Now he's coming to the feet.
Stand up.
This is where Glenn likes to be and out the first part of the one, the muscle, the eye of the boys in general like to wrestle on their feet.
Good takedown.
Sure.
And there is a beautiful double by Glenn countered by he.
Cause he hasn't let go yet.
Not yet.
But he's in a pretty tough on it.
He's got in between those legs.
He's got him now and it's three to nothing in favor of Glenn.
What you notice that Glenn made two super moves, a good escape off the feet, moved out from in and came right back in for that double caught him unawares.
So to speak, for at leads the 300, yeah, yeah.
Back out to the center again with 2 minutes and 6 seconds left in the second period there you're looking at less Anderson on the right, Carol Nichols on the left.
Plus, Anderson was a great national champion at Iowa State to now the assistant coach, Carol Nichols, often refers to him as the best assistant in the country.
And a beautiful reversal by wife because he had a gift, a hip.
No, I mean a really hip little combination.
And he got Glenn just in exactly the wrong spot off, balanced of 3 to 2 with 2 minutes left in the second period.
Glenn wants to stand up.
Now.
He's got to sit out, turn up for the head down, and it's quarter to a point for an escape.
Got the fortitude in the center.
They've got to do that.
Wrestling in the center match.
Boys have been pretty aggressive here.
There hasn't been any stalling thus far other than at the end of that first period.
He had to give a warning.
But they're both pretty aggressive.
Glenn has had a little better luck setting up.
He's used the armdrag to set up height, and because he's not been able to get the shot up, he wants the watch out because he looks like he wants to go in on singles.
So the match, although both of them are good that there's a single for the long ways out, I'm not sure it's deep enough at all.
And Glenn may be able to come around going to tie up that near ankle and maybe use a full face and go around.
If again, if nothing else, just enough for the neutral position.
And that's what he did.
He got it.
Yeah.
So it's a minute and about 5 seconds left.
Porter to Glenn leading.
He's the man with the back to you but under £18 a shot from way out.
Here's an injury time He hands up because he is hurting again and he's called four times and he evidently snapped a nerve or something in that neck or shoulder when he pulled back out of that neutral position in the first period.
And that's bothering him.
So it's £118 here.
Iowa State against Iowa.
We just started the favorite here.
Jan Glenn is leading for 2 to 1.
Interesting point here, Doug, as you we notice the points that have been scored thus far.
It's all fall.
It's often the simple basics.
And here's two boys, one eighth in the nation, previously, one third using the basics, the singles, the doubles, the rolls, the stand ups.
There's the points.
They don't do anything any cuter than anybody else.
They just do it better.
That's right.
They have technique and the basics are used and just, okay, let's go.
Let's go.
Iowa.
Now we're ready to go.
£118.
There's Dan Gable, who's this year's Olympic coach.
The criteria he's been after Pat McCormack, he thinks that Rakosi is stalling a little gland moving.
Now there's a chance that's going to be a hard one.
First time a stall and he's backing out.
I'm sure he's been looking at that.
Previously biased of three.
Glenn now leads by three.
We're in the second period of less than a minute left waiting on the coach.
He's going to have to watch that or he's out of the court.
Get out of the single.
But Glenn counters that very well.
He goes back on that inside cross and he sprawls and gives him his weight.
Again, beautifully done by Mike LAMB.
And not because he's holding on to that arm to keep from being spun around.
Notice how Glenn blocked that head off real well.
Now, Glenn has a single leg, but he has 15 seconds to do something with.
It goes to a double and takes the two out.
He's got a balaclava on his back with 5 seconds left out, 7 to 2, no, four points back.
That was an excellent maneuver on the part of Glenn.
He set that up ninth on that single, then put it into a double and put him down for two.
And the score 7 to 2, 3 minutes left.
Notice that backing off that head right there.
And then he comes in on that single himself watching.
He'll pick her up.
Now watch how he sits back on it.
Use the trip goes into the double at that half and that takes that whizzer away.
Now we're back to live action with seven of two beginning of the third period.
And Glenn starts on top because he has five points to make up the riding time is about even there hasn't been much but Gladys trying to build it all right now he's using the deep ways and you've got to hang him back a little bit to work out as you roll roll by for Cozy.
But Glenn's not my leg.
He's got the grapevine on the near leg.
He's got the grapevine in their leg.
The first working on the upper body moves on the arms.
You got the chin there, too.
We'd like to see that leg on over.
He got high on the hips, and if he can get it over, he gets him four points out of it.
But I don't think the coach is going to fall for that.
He has the figure four up on the on the leg and he would like to do just exactly that.
He almost had it if he got the arm hooked in there.
The older I'm happy to ahead from four points just slightly more than 2 minutes left you can hear performing the referee telling him how much time is left.
7 to 2 Glenn on top.
There's a point against what cozy and Glenn is now ahead 8 to 2.
That was for stalling on the right.
Glenn's right here real tough.
He's got control, without question at this point.
He's going to work on him for a while here now because he's got a minute and 40 some seconds to go here.
And I'm sure he's going to garner some four points at the close.
It doesn't get moving here.
Well, he now has right in time points sitting there waiting for him.
He has better than a minute of advantage and it's going to matter because eight points makes it a major decision on how to stay the course.
He has a good roll maneuver there and look for him to use it.
Go to him more often.
Let's go try to tie air star.
3 seconds left quite often because he has 30 seconds of injury, time out, left, £118 match, Glenn, against the coach next 8 to 2.
The first period was scoreless.
Sarkozy was given the warning and then you got what you got out.
Now, coaching this here and there you see Mike for those 2 minutes.
All right, let's go.
And there's the end of the end of the timeout.
I'm sure that the injury is bothering him a little bit, but Glenn has a great deal to do with what's going on out here.
Like to get a little time to think about it is that role.
Everybody else got it immediately and four cousins in a lot of trouble now because Glenn has got that tight.
He's got that cradle in really tight.
He's got both arms and he's got a tough, brutal on him right now.
And there's still a minute 15 left now to notice how he could that nearly over the top of the hip.
Jack brought it in.
What's your freedom back there?
It's now 10 to 2 with two back points.
What's your about?
He couldn't hold it for 5 seconds.
That freed.
He's got a two.
That's days.
I'll listen to you.
I don't want to tell you.
Don't pull it up And potentially dangerous holes.
I think he's going to get the elbow joint in it.
Any maneuver that has the tendency to go against doing the normal rotational movement of a joint is potentially dangerous and could lead to an illegal maneuver, which, of course, was a one point penalty infraction.
And of course, the referee is instructed to take it before it gets to the point where it hits somebody.
10 to 2.
40 seconds left.
It wouldn't surprise me to get another one in here.
A little follow on stalling and moving on here as it comes to maneuver after the close, sit up and stand up and start competition.
And at one point, 23, 30 seconds later, it was a kind of a combination set up, stand up on the children's part for the outset.
It's important here for it for just what happened, not to happen for Iowa State, because that makes it a nine point difference.
If that could reach into a major decision, I'll grab it out 12 to 4 now oh points.
He scores 12 to 4.
It's going to be 13 before the end, because then we'll be right in time for Glenn.
And that is 13 to 4, four points for Iowa as Dan Glenn decisions.
Mike Huckabee winner.
That was a good match, Doug.
And now this.
Glenn's tough.
He's a go getter.
He stays right after he's been tough against Iowa State.
That's a fact for years now.
Here are two outstanding Iowa high school boys, Jim Lord of Iowa State against Jeff Kerber.
Now, this could be a swing match because Iowa expects to win a lot of these lower weights.
And Kerber has had an up and down here in his freshman year.
He's 12 on eight more to 13 and six.
And you never know who he's going to beat or who's going to be.
Well, not at this point.
It was kind of a maneuver there, kind of a spin through on behalf of one of the boards.
At no point started out.
There'll be an interesting difference in styles here.
Lord is certainly a chance here.
He's a little wilder out there.
Yeah, well, he's interesting.
Both boys are upper body moves.
The ten foot wrestlers are.
And that's a warning for Ward against Ward four back and out of the circle.
And that's a single shot by Kerber.
But it was a little bit of what you and I would call telegraphing his move a little bit too far away.
Come back.
Yeah.
Interesting here because four time state champion and from Emmitsburg and Lord from Lisbon, Iowa, three time state champion.
Just imagine that seven state title between the two, the two of them, I guess it's shot for Kelly.
There you vilardi went into a fireman's carry settled for a Kelly and didn't get into one yet.
Notice the difference really Lord Hardy's three out there.
He's dangerous all the time and Kerber is very balanced.
Yeah, very much so.
Jeff, you know who gets a takedown here?
They're going to both of have to become a little more active than they are.
They've got to speed up the action.
There's not much going on out there now.
They're just feeling it.
You're going out and there's going to be some action out there pretty quick.
40, 40 seconds left in the first period.
Remember, if there is no score, one of them has to be one.
But there's been a warning already on Iowa State.
So that won't be match, right?
That's right.
You're right.
You're right.
And it's probably a good thing for Kerber because he hasn't made too many moves yet.
Out of bounds.
And that move with that the edge Kerber lit up on that.
So it has no effect on anything.
You should want to have that happen out in the middle.
However, now you know where he was 15 seconds.
First period Lord this against Kerber Kerber on the left now with his back to Gallacher he's looking for a little bit of a good move excellent move here before working on that arm then tucked in here for the double header.
But he didn't get the corner.
Oh yes he did.
There's the move right there.
He got in there rookie, but it came from behind.
Put him to the mat for his two points.
That was a good move, without question.
Excellent.
He got good position, good deep penetration.
Took his base with him.
He was in there deep.
It was a good move that Kerber starts on top against Lord, leading to the left, putting a lot of weight in there on the top.
And we can see, Lord looking for a run.
Yes, he's trying to wing that near Iron Man, but Herbers.
Right.
And pretty tough.
He's tied in there on him.
You've got to have your legs covered in German.
Yeah.
Notice how he works behind the arms in there.
He doesn't want to reach out front.
Give him something to.
To latch on to.
To more or less get a move in.
Going out front for him.
Kerber has the leg in and he's trying to find something up above.
He's an upper body man as far as some of his moves are concerned.
But he's got control in there and he's not too worried at this point as he stays that leg in there.
Now, lawyers try to come up with a calf of out that doesn't have a leg in any more.
But he has the Mir on the way to get there to the wing is a little careful with that.
Make a little high on him.
We have 2 minutes left.
Second, third.
Kerber on top leads to the effort right here I am.
Right.
What's the hammer up there?
And a tendency to get a little bit high there with it.
But it didn't reach that potentially dangerous to his handle extremely well.
Jeff Kerber And he's right and tough on top and German the bottom.
Tim Lawrence going to have to get some more moves put together for himself.
A minute and a half left, second third.
Get a man who wants to step in on you with the Grapevine series.
It takes a lot of your initial moves away from you.
And so therefore, you've got to change your attack or your approach.
Now stand out on the ankle now.
And that is how Kerber maintains that balance.
Your weight ends up high, but these days, back far enough to keep his body sort of straight, grab a minute stale stalemate that he got in through the position, both of you still down.
And McCormick says you can't stand that long.
And that was definitely stalemated.
Neither boy was improving his position.
I had an opportunity to look at that record 126 and six in high school.
Fantastic.
A minute last second period.
Kerber needs to do nothing.
He has to go through a tough writing time.
Obviously, he's written in too much in this period.
Lord, They're tried kind of a short sit out with a possible oh, to come back with a warning against the top man, Jeff Kerber, one morning a piece He's writing on top now.
I would imagine he feels he's not going for the full points.
And of course, the warning, they both have to go because it's a point next time for either one.
45 seconds left, Kerber bar in the arm place, right.
And then your arm over there.
But you'd like to get in turn if he could, But feisty there and he's strong, got a good bouncer and knows how he's got his face good support and tipping off his face Kerber putting a lot of force on that back, a lot of drive.
1817 seconds left in the second period Gilmore pressure being affected on that Oh man that's a number back that what do you think of that bar on three down you back whoever tried to come out in the rear he had 5 seconds to do it 0432, one there of the end of the period.
Got him out two to do nothing and cover up this.
Oh yes, that gives him 3 minutes writing time.
Oh, this short time out is being taken while Lord gets his gets a little valet service from the referee you're looking at.
Jay Robinson is the assistant coach in Iowa.
He was an outstanding wrestler, only two zero freestyler and international competition.
Both boys referee have just told him, welcome to the one for stalling next time at the penalty point either way.
And now Kerber goes into the same position on top.
You see him in the great final the leg laughing and that's Lord on top of Brother Lord.
And this often happens with Lord.
The man stands up with him I wouldn't despise.
You'll still meet that pretty shortly.
Certainly.
Well, if Kerber can bring that leg up now, going back to the man knows.
No man.
Oh, Lord.
Got that near Lakeshore.
And he got a cradle to cradle on Courbet.
He's got some back points here.
He's got it.
He's got a three point near for at least 3 to 2.
Kerber fell into the cradle back that me driven and brought him back over to the side and just ripped up that cradle without much left difficulty.
And it's 3 to 3 He's got it and trying to get it again at that far cradle at the far side.
Some people call it a false cradle, but he got it three points out of it.
And that's all we know.
Whether he could actually pin Kerber or not is doubtful, but he could certainly get him over on the other shoulder a minute and 40 seconds left and left up at the end.
He's got it locked up again.
Couldn't get him run with it.
Go.
And this is a swing match.
This is a very important match at £126 a point for Lord Kirby's call for Scotland.
Pick under him right here.
He loved it up, brought him in.
There's no way that he can fit in there unless he get that inside shoulder down.
But he got the three pointer out of it without question, and he can probably have a short time out here, by the way, because Jeff Kerber is complaining about an injury to a leg.
But I played it for him.
Hand.
Hand his hand.
Yeah.
It's been take previously the score is for 2 to 1 and then 24 seconds left in the final period here.
Now riding time is still in Gerber's favor because he had all 3 minutes in the second period and Ward has all one minute 36 in this one.
This is a tough match.
And these are two boys that both of them are very tough ones.
But guys, like I said earlier, when you got seven state titles between the two of them, they are no patsy.
They're both excellent wrestlers and they're both they're both tough riders.
They're both good.
Pinners.
And they both know what this means.
Oh, without question, their use out.
Jim last year didn't make the NCAA or the big eight four figure.
The first qualifies people for the national office because he couldn't make £126.
I know he felt bad about it and he'd like to make up for it.
Now Kerber stands up quick.
He's got two points to make, but would you go for that of trying to get it locked up?
But Kerber stands up on it.
We're trying to shut that on so he can get the stadium there.
He almost hit it, but Laurence stays behind.
Looking back to the man with a minute and 5 seconds left, Berger had a nice stand up, except that I'm almost after him in how he does so.
He too had the takedown.
But Ward was right on him.
I mean, it threw down its ward by two here and now.
If he has two more seconds, notice, more writing time, no more writing time and none possible.
Not possible.
I'm trying to get the one out of it here.
If he can get that arms up.
But he's got the leg seven, that's going to make it tough for Jeff to get out of the referee.
He's watching this one carefully.
He's got to be ready to call a stalemate if he has to.
He might.
You're going to film it back?
Yes.
Got to hand.
40 seconds left.
That's Jim Lord of Iowa State, trying to beat Jeff Kerber crossing top.
Yeah, that was that was a quick it was a quick jump on the partner Lord got the close it on top.
Next time there'll be a one point penalty and he can't afford it.
Nobody can afford penalties here.
There's a two point difference.
All the points at the side of are going to come on the mat.
Lord, hurry up here.
Let's have it pretty heavy.
Now he's off the side of that deep waist.
Neuroma on the clock is all important and the referee will want to watch to make sure that Morris is working.
And he appears to be working a little tough on him on top.
He threw a lot of pressure down.
7 seconds, 3 to 1, and he ran.
Boy, that was quite a win.
Let's get a shot of this boy running around the arena here.
I try to get a look at Jim Lord because he's really thrilled to be an outstanding wrestler, Jeff Kerber, and bring the score for the lead up to 4 to 3.
By the way, there was a star point given to Lord at the end caused by the two.
We've got Lewis here now in the Iowa uniform and Jim Gibbons, former cycling motorcycle wrestler for the obvious place icons.
And Lewis is the defending national champion.
He's one of the outstanding wrestlers in the United States.
Oh, without question.
He just super in the national spirit out of fame after winning that title, although he got taken down.
But Gibbons is in there real tight and he got to two points for Gibbons and the call even though even up says the referee added to the watch.
That was an excellent call.
The referees mark Gibbons lost control, but Lewis was out for the one without question.
His 221 total was after a thriller at £126.
Wow.
There's nothing else.
His style Iowa State status.
Well, Lewis has had a fantastic collegiate career with winning.
Topping the national championship last year was runner up two years ago, two time Big Ten champion.
Now, what does Gibbons have to do to beat Kerber?
They're going to have to go get it on him and stay with him because because Lewis is very dangerous even in that position.
Three to he went into that move off of the fireman's carry into a single lane double leg combination now Gibbons fighting back with a whizzer against Lewis and Gibbons leads 4 to 2 over Randy Lewis of Iowa.
Randy came right out with that stand up and state but that was an excellent takedown and is right there coming off of up fireman's carry into a double who picked him up put him down for two the Lewis stood up for the 1.30 seconds left in the first period Jim Gibbons of Iowa state with his back to the camera.
Randy Lewis on the left.
Lewis is very, very good on his feet.
He's a freestyler, an outstanding wrestler and freestyler in the collegiate style.
And don't underestimate the fact he's a super Peter.
Oh boy.
Right from his feet.
We have 5 seconds.
Lewis had a string of consecutive balls in his high school career.
That's just phenomenal.
I forget the number, but it was phenomenal.
Something like 45.
I think it's a national record for high school.
That score Gibbons gets his like there's just less Anderson with Harold Nichols and they were giving some advice to Gibbons about what to do because Gibbons gets his choice.
He's up the line up or down, and he says down.
Lewis is going to ride.
Second period, 3 minutes.
Gibbons leads 42.
He's on the bottom.
Lewis the favorite, definitely a favorite.
Outstanding wrestler up one time.
Gibbons Fun wanted to get those legs in on him because that takes away a lot of his moves.
Lewis Very confident very tough come the nice role nice for Gibbons Irvine and he got to roll combination Gibbons lead 6 to 2 and he's wrestling with confidence the way they say I saw him in high school Lewis really comes right here He comes over to the sidewalk.
He kept coming back, he pushed back, and Lewis almost countered it with a nice move.
But Gibbons came back tough for the two BARBER And there's Dan Gable, and he's got to be worried.
But he knows that Lewis has come back from this kind of a deficit before.
He he just he can handle it any time and always offers strong awfully good.
And he has his reversal.
So look for a little tough move.
Excellent momentum going to the coffee spot on.
He'd like to lock that thing up.
2 minutes and 10 seconds left.
In the second period, Lewis showing his power and Gibbons holding him to the leg.
He's countering it by staying in on Lewis's leg.
We'd like to bring him over first from Paul Point.
He's got that stitched up pretty tough, that bar over there.
Well, he sure does.
Now he'd like to drive that head to the near post and lock up for that fatal 6 to 4 score.
Lewis is right in, but he is behind by two.
Notice those bar and those he's got that single bomb.
Little tough walk off on the head.
We've got a lot of pressure down on that shoulder and upper body of Gibbons more than one of the peers wrestling very confidently up five ahead that way.
But Gibbons is coming around and he gets to remove on the board of governors.
He came in, roughed up on it and one for Lewis as he's out the score is 8 to 5 with a minute and 10 seconds left a minute and ten out of bounds.
It would appear to me that given would what want to get in there and get him the upper body moves that he could catch him on his back with an upper body move.
And Lewis is tough on the mouth and goes Gibbons for a single leg.
That's his best that's his best offense is to get, get, move and get on the single doubles whatever the Lewis is the mighty tough wrestler from his feet.
He's also good at countering these single legs.
And so Gibbons wants to really switch it up if he can really pull it in tight.
And he said Lewis has got that far ankle.
He'd like to come in and Coffey's through if he can.
You got that too.
That's true for Lewis.
He came around early, but he had the up here.
He had that near ankle and oh, injury as far as 87827.
Let's go.
I thought it was an injury in there, but apparently the major hit could just slip down over his head a little bit too far.
Got his way.
Well, I'll tell you what the score is.
It's 8 to 7 in favor of Gibbons, but Lewis is about 13 seconds from getting a potential point right in time.
He has a minute and 25 seconds of advantage.
Gibbons has 38 on top and there are 33 seconds now and ticking in the second period left it all £134.
Iowa leads 4 to 3 in the PIN score.
And this is only the third match day.
Yes.
Lewis about that double grapevine on him now kept in on him, but he released off the lake nearest the camera camera here.
So he just kept in with the far right.
Now he'd like to get in turn for some four points, 10 seconds.
Now he's got the double grapevine in on him.
We'd like to break it down and go to work on the upper body.
Move off.
Felt it's a little late.
Go at the end of the period 8 to 7 Gibbons winning 8 to 7 as leading 8 to 7.
You're down Iowa, Arizona and Iowa coaching staff here.
No, they're not out of the woods yet.
Jim Bunning was a great wrestler in high school and some people are thought, well, one of these days he's going to come around like that and he'll be just as tough as Randy Lewis.
But he has been for two periods there.
It was one of those was excellent, excellent move.
And now Lewis leads nine 9 to 9 after the takedown and he wants to go in and get him some points.
By taking Gibbons down.
He feels stronger now I think he feels he can go in and he think Gibbons is tired, he's tough, and his upper body moves real tough.
He showed that just a moment ago, the 11 and now Lewis after that takedown.
And he has riding time and he'll probably try to let Gibbons go if he can find a safe place to do it.
There it is.
Any future you got up up one of 11 attacks.
Here's your move right here.
Now launches comes about taking back the backside, just kind of a body throw and Gibbons goes into the single but he missed it in around ten.
Lewis is countering that beautifully now.
Oh, yes.
He's got command without question at this point, 13 to 10.
He's got the crossface in that far.
And he's driving hard.
Yes, he's got him.
We've got him pretty well broken down a lot of control.
It wouldn't surprise me, see, and bring him back the other way for the full points.
This had tears in his face.
My time, because he noticed that a couple of times.
Gibbons can't get his headgear out of his face.
Just leave him.
He can't see.
Lewis is using some maneuvers that you can't put a name on so much.
But he's got a lot of upper body moves with those forearm series and body throws that are just tremendous.
He executes them well, very strong.
He's got a blast drill, gets a lot of leverage in there.
Just keep in mind, he's defending NCAA champion neutral 13 to 11 as he lets Gibbons up.
That's an intentional release.
He figures he's stronger now.
I think he feels it.
He feels that he's got a little more strength when he's down on the lay.
Watch.
It either could be a potentially dangerous, but he would run through it.
Molly 15 to 11.
Lewis lets him up again now 1512 In this kind of situation, he didn't.
Jim Gibbons had kept on the offense here and get moving after him because Lewis is on the offense at this time.
Let's go back to back to the center a minute and 23 seconds left.
Gibbons is going to have to get some offense what he had the first period in the half, but how Lewis is carried all the offense here lately.
That's right there.
But Lewis has been coming around on that much better.
He's been spinning on that single leg and getting behind it.
He hasn't stayed out in front of our ankle, you see, blocked off and he moved and he's working on that ball on through.
Literally no points yet naked are still made out of this 54 seconds left and Carter right where's that knee?
All right.
Oh let's just stalemate I was afraid was potentially dangerous after getting caught here.
And it was going to be that way to begin with.
But evidently him being right on top of it, he didn't envision that it was go get your foot back.
44 seconds left, 15 to 12 Lewis leads.
We're in the third period.
Gibbons goes in on a single leg, but he hasn't got he doesn't have enough depth up under single, but he's got to go for the single shot.
And that was kind of a high Court fight, Lewis counters real well, tacked on too tight.
Lewis is in on him again, 17 to 12, and he has a he has some riding time now.
He would like to now.
I don't know if he was looking for the line.
There it is.
That keeps him broken down, keeps him off his pace so he can work on the upper body and maybe get some fall point.
That's what he's attempting to do.
I'm sure Now he's got that near eyeball.
I'd like to tip him over.
10 seconds left.
Gibbons is out in front of him now, and I don't believe they're going to get him here at the end of the match.
Lewis is going to win 718 to 12.
But it was a dandy day.
Oh, excellent, man.
That's one that was really a credit to both boys wrestling and NCAA defending champion stuffing anybody's leg.
And Lewis is a mighty tough wrestler, but that was three and a half Jim Russell him real tough all the way.
It was a good match by both boys and that's a three pointer for Lewis and four Iowa Iowa lead 7 to 3 going to 142.
And now we have Dave Brown here.
We're going to redshirt him at Iowa State.
Now they feel they need him and he's back in there six and one against Leidy Zaleski, a prairie Cedar Rapids, 15 and five.
Yes, to Cedar Rapids Boys High, ten foot circle.
Dave Brown with his back to the camera.
He won.
He lost an awful lot of one point decisions, I think.
I think last year he lost 61. decisions to national Place winners, every one of them in one way or another.
Let's go back in.
That's Jim Gibbons.
He's tuckered out, I'll tell you.
But he put up a good show against a great wrestler, Randy Lewis.
Oh, without question.
That Lewis is.
He's just got an awful lot of moves.
And I'll tell you, it shows how great Lewis is.
There's a single by Dave Brown had a bit on the high punches to top shows how great Randy Lewis is because a lot of people can't come back from that kind of a start.
That's right.
He came back from a deficit and just kept the pressure on for each one activity out here and that's what he'll do.
Zero Go ahead.
And he was up against Jim Gibbons, who was wrestling an outstanding match.
And he still managed to come away with that win that excellent demonstration of hard on both sides who do nothing.
Jerry Brown is leading Lenny Zaleski, who was very strong, likes to wrestle upper body, is trying to stand up against him.
But Brown manages to stay with him a lot of over the out of bounds line is now caught up in like 55 seconds left.
You'll find a lot of the wrestlers anymore with a lot of upper body moves jogging.
A lot of that comes from Freestyle international style wrestling and they get a lot of fall points and no falls off of the two.
Brown still on top, driving hard.
He's a good rider.
He's got a lot of pressure up here on the back.
All Gillespie's making an attempt to come up out of there.
He has to regain his base each time he gets broken down.
But I'll tell you this the new stall rules for the last three or four years, people are really getting used to him now.
You just don't see it.
You couldn't really even know if it's some star points given in this match.
But it's been action pretty all the way through.
Yeah, pretty much so.
Doug And that's improved wrestling at the collegiate level.
A great fit.
You see a lot more activity.
That's what the fans come to see and that's what the coaches and wrestlers want right on top, leading two to nothing.
Zaleski hasn't been able to get away from it here since he was taken down 57 five.
And we'll talk here now.
He's got to kind of really a deep ways, but he's got the race right now.
Zaleski comes back with what we called in Love Olympia hours.
Give me the Whistler.
Move.
But he hasn't got it in there very deep, so I don't know.
You lose it very effectively.
Now, I brought to back out at the end of the first period.
Dave Brown leads to him.
I think you come to the center, Iowa gets its choice.
Lenny is the last campaign to zero score second Lewis trailing two to nothing takes top boy he was a tough wrestler in his senior year in high school with a state meet There's Tom Parker.
He'll be up there at 158 for Iowa State.
But Lenny Zaleski, you can see that he's going to be tough and got to the college level.
Brown comes into a sit out to a stand up and it looks like he might get one out of it multiple.
Here he has three knuckles in the neutral position, which is facing off with his opponent.
I just noticed if we ever get a shot of it there, Dave Brown looks like he's this wrestling shoes are old family favorites.
They're about to come apart.
And I see that they must be the lucky one.
Great announcing as the score and Dave Brown and what is the last year going out of that £142 both boys are attempting kind of set up a move right now.
There's the number of little things one can do there to set up a little bit of a push jerk here or there.
You kind of feel each other out, know where the pressure is, know where the balance is.
But to get a boy react in one way, you can take him another.
About 2 minutes, referee Pat McCormick sends him back to the center and there they are.
Yes, ten foot two might lose one of those shoes.
It's lucky he has them give a hard time.
He probably feels that they're the ones that he wins with.
In the double shot on the part of Zaleski, a little bit too far out, he telegraphed his move didn't get deep enough penetration.
Lenny Zaleski, Dave Brown is in on a but it's at the edge of the mat about good in there pretty good on it.
But he didn't have enough match space to get his move going.
Dave Brown wrestled extremely well in the Midlands tournament.
He finished second, I believe.
That's right.
He's not second very high.
I've lost my fingers.
I didn't see the Midlands myself this year.
I mean, 30 seconds left to go in the second period, three to nothing.
The team score Iowa seven, Iowa State, three rounds.
Looks like he's trying to use some sort of an arm throw or body throw.
We can work it.
You go in, you'll throw that and go to a single or a high crotch series, probably begin.
Iowa State's points came from Jim Lord, who beat Jeff Kerber five two to a minute left in the second period.
A lot of working at it, but not a lot of action.
But there's the single leg or the high crotch.
Nobody want to call that one little bit of both.
He drops in from the outside.
I call it a single leg.
He shook that arm by and goes in.
And that's because that sets it up for 44 seconds out of bounds.
And this crowd, you can see they thought that Dave Brown should have been allowed to continue that run for a while.
Yeah, they were both out of bounds over there any time the supporting parts of either both wrestlers go out of bounds, why he's going to bring them back the middle 30 seconds, second period.
I want to keep in mind though, Doug, a lot of matches are won and lost if you're near the edge of that mat.
And that's why both boys have to be on their toes when they get out here.
That edge, ready to round his back to the camera leads three to nothing.
He had a takedown and an escape.
He leads the in writing time by more than a minute to a minute and 14 seconds advantage to Zaleski is 8 seconds and they're on the edge of the mat now have a little ducked under attempt.
They're on the part of Gillespie, but not with a great deal of intent, so to speak.
And Gable is up exhorting Lenny.
So I ask you to do just that.
Shoot, shoot, shoot.
Read about them.
At the end of the second period was beginning of the third.
Iowa State goes to the bottom.
Zaleski or other the other way around.
See some of the people in the varsity crowd?
Well, no, not quite the basket.
A few rows missing up at the top of the arms from his writing time.
At this point, he has right in time, he has a three point lead.
Zalewski comes to the stand up, Brown keeps a single.
He come into a stand up and an overhang or a whizzer.
He'd like to get that leg down so he can face off with him and get his one point.
Could stay, but he might not know.
Didn't get it.
Almost got it.
I want to tell you, I have a feeling this is going to be one heck of a meet all the way through.
All right.
Down so far, we've only gone through three matches in most of the fourth.
But I was there and we got some big ones coming, 150 next car against somebody human or turtle.
Myra, there's your stand up.
Looks great.
Well executed on behalf of Zaleski and it's 3 to 1 3 to 1 a takedown separate from the takedown and writing time actually.
Dave Brown of Iowa State, Lenny Zaleski of Iowa.
David looks like he'd like to get that arm shut for that arm throw and go in for that high crotch again.
Back in the center now, Harold Nichols is wandering off to the corner.
He's going to get his next wrestler ready.
He's leaving less, Anderson, in charge for the end of this match.
He goes out to talk to Nate Carr.
3 minutes and 10 seconds left.
Good call.
That call doesn't surprise me here.
The ball has been that effective here.
And that's a point the next time.
So for the fans that are watching, that's a double stall warning to both boys.
Neither boy aggressive enough to be considered offensive.
The reporter, the one for stalling here a minute, 55 left.
That's Solecki.
And next time neither one of them gets that warning for that phone call.
It's a 1.40 penalty.
It's like they would like to get that aren't going to get a trip out of it if he gets a trip and then he goes after that leg high on the outside comes around from behind.
But Solecki turns into women, saves himself.
It's a minute and 35 left in the match and tensions beginning to build.
It's a double double shoot shot earlier on the behalf before Zaleski looks like he maybe was shooting out little the too far.
He didn't get a good position and they brown one after the high cross there just with the out of bounds line nothing happening a minute 27 left is the back on a circle.
This is a pretty evenly contested match right here.
Both boys are pretty respectful of each other's moves and that's probably why we haven't got a lot of offense going.
They're on their feet.
Well, and Dave Brown is in one.
It's going to be close.
Yes.
That's not true.
He has a riding time advantage.
And so a takedown is not enough for Zaleski.
He wanted it up on the wrinkle down in the high crotch areas again.
And Zaleski goes for the whizzer.
The over hook is about what it amounts to.
A nice move by Zaleski to come out of there.
Well, nice.
He didn't get any points, but at least he saved some coming from Brown.
And that movie made many times.
It turned into a 2.3.
Brown was aware of it and counted off well on the road.
We still have 55 seconds left here of a 3 to 1 match.
Brown and Zaleski in the center, Zaleski in the black referee watching them closely.
We haven't seen a move here for about 15 seconds.
He's avoided.
You're avoided.
Zaleski is called.
And that's a point.
And I don't think the Iowa bench disagreeing entirely.
They would like to see Lenny get in there and jump.
It's 41.
Well, he's it's actually a four point difference here.
He made a shot there for a double.
And Brown countered with kind of a snap down counter, but with no points, of course, says Dave Brown against Zaleski.
We have 20 seconds left.
20 seconds.
Brown kind of made it.
Look at that right leg of Zaleski.
I wouldn't call it a shot.
More for you to mix them.
Both boys have made some kind of a half step, so to speak, the last three, what I would call a double stalling again.
Yes.
I don't believe either one of them are moving that well.
A point for each makes it 5 to 2.
Neither boy has been that active on his feet for going for both like 5 seconds.
It's going to go to Iowa State and there it is.
Win it right in time.
Dave Brown, 6 to 2, the winner, the down and the score is Iowa, Iowa seven, Iowa State six.
I'll tell you, it's a lot closer than I thought Iowa State was going to be at this point.
Yes, I would have to agree with you.
I think that's we match at 126 May already.
Now, King Miller is not wrestling at 150.
This is Steve Curdle Meyer against Nate car the quick movement nothing but a little snap down and get the hip down on black.
Colonel Meyer buzzed him for two points How can your weight and also at that weight, he was introduced also, but he growled and he was bothering him.
So Nate Carr, who was ahead two and nothing in front of us, went up against Colonel Meyer.
This is the son of Gary Graham Meyer, an outstanding wrestler, Cresco High School.
He was with Iowa State, Iowa national Champion, and he was the coach just before Dan Gable with a couple of national championships himself.
Do that for the current assistant athletic director of the University of Stave, Colonel Meyer, a junior from Iowa City.
And they called Carr leading two to nothing on that original takedown.
That was a nice move on behalf of Turtle Murray that almost got turned in for the one at the end of the board match based on minute 34.
Carr was one of the outstanding prospects in the country last year.
He was one of the top five prospects.
He comes from the wrestling family of Carr's Jimmy Carr.
You were never in position, so get it on there.
Let's go.
Jimmy Carr, his older brother, I believe, was an Olympian at 16, and then it was Joe and then there was Fletcher.
They were all good.
Come from a wrestling family.
He scissoring that leg pretty good.
Got the arms by the front 15 first period.
Notice how he's got that near Lake Seger.
Pretty heavy.
He's squeezing those knees, get a lot of body pressure in the upper or lower back of Colonel Meyer.
Consequently can't regain his base.
He's going to have to move up and change his approach.
He's going to get the one person stalling ou out of bounds.
Well, I'll tell you, that's probably not very happy thoughts through the minds of the Iowa bench, although they are leading 7 to 6.
I think they were hoping to be better off here.
They lost a 26 and lost a 42 in the sit out attempt by Colonel Meyer.
He got up in the air sitting out there.
He's trying to shut that I'm off, hoping he can stand up and get the one point escape stays tough and locks in on him, comes to be placed at deep waist.
You see Iowa State wrestlers use over the years, lots of us out of bounds.
Iowa down Iowa State holding these guys remind you again, as if you didn't know really if you're listening that carefully, that microphone is on the referee.
They're allowing you to listen to what he has to say.
The rest of the now, let's let's part let's cut them up intentionally leave for the one point this scoop.
Boy, is he quick.
He's very quiet, but he's down here.
But he's careless potentially going up and intentionally going out of bounds.
His call against Nathan Carson.
Going out of bounds.
The two.
Here it is right here.
Here's your room.
Look at that.
Quick move on the money.
Call the colonel now turns it on him.
It comes around himself.
Look up.
And he got the one pointer as a result of intentionally going off the mat to prevent a takedown.
2 to 2 little now made a nice move.
Yes, he certainly did.
This car is awful quick.
2 to 2 NASCAR back in.
Oh, he found out already and is mad and this meet that the favorite put on a circle here he can't rest on his laurels.
Oh that's right And car would have to be considered the favorite.
But he has to he has to stay in their patrol limousine to make Charlotte countering.
But I just am amazed at how quick that make cars.
Oh, and he's very flat, very fast.
He does marvels a lot of talent obviously showed up to Iowa State takes goes to the down position he's got three guys to take it a minute and 20 seconds.
All right.
In time for glory, he's out fast.
If you attempt to stand up just and get it really come all the way up to run out on on his knees and turn him for the one I notice.
He uses a long lead with the leg he's on.
He'll give you his opponent in the single leg and he's strong and got it.
This is not an uncanny amount of balance.
Really.
What I'm mouthful.
You see it?
That's your move right there.
It just got a shot in the arm and moved out for one.
Oh, you should mention that Kate Miller, who would like to have wrestled with this weight against Nate Carr pin card in the Midlands this year.
He got him in a bear hug while riding him right now.
Carr stood up and turned into it, trying to escape and got caught in a bear hug.
So it happens to everybody.
I got a bear and I take got down.
We've got this cowboy competition we've got talking about being two cars right now.
A nice move part a fair and a nice kind of move.
Nice car and a nice counter back.
That's right.
Yes.
Hurst Fireman's Carry Fry by Colonel Meyer.
But cars can play football.
It's a 5 to 3 with lots of chicken up.
So we've got that chicken wing on him on the far side.
If he gets too much, curl up one.
He's got to keep that pressure going perpendicular to the long axis of his body, so to speak.
He goes to high on it and it goes against the shoulder.
Don't Carr would like to get the man on his back because in a match and a mean as close as this one is contested pins make out there for how easy right you're not with that with that chicken wing bar he'd like to get that happen often on the far side and he's got it and he hasn't he hasn't.
Here it goes.
It's bad.
Boy.
Referee is pouting.
033.08 over there, pretty deep.
He's got him in trouble, but he's not on his back.
Look like maybe like the count of three a move.
But I don't think he's going to get that done.
Well, 50 seconds left.
In the second period car leading, he turn him over off the chicken wing and the half Nelson used to from behind to try to hoist him up on his shoulders.
40 seconds left on the apron to score German whistling.
Look in match with him just too quick.
And he has left.
Likewise very strong state.
Nate Carr of Iowa State, a freshman from Erie, Pennsylvania, 19 and four.
Steve, Colonel Meyer from Iowa City goes to a sit out maneuver.
This is the Nuremberg Nuremberg to counter it with the big boys looking at how far has Colonel Meyer flattened out to put the pressure on.
And he's got that good to the wing by on a combination on that nearside again, he's going up a little high with a lot of pressure.
He's got the hand.
He has the half again, lost it.
10 seconds left.
Second 38 to.
That's a right and that's quite a move.
You can get the pressure, go in one direction and bring him back the other way with the half or vice versa.
You know who used to pin everybody with that?
He knows what to do better then the coach of the man on the bottom.
I think then Gable had greater impact on that maneuver and the reason why a lot of young people are even better than anyone I know he was tough with the ball.
I'm sure that's the end of the second period.
Starting up third Iowa State leads 8 to 2 and in this match Carr leading 8 to 2 and Iowa leads in the meet 7 to 6 after four matches.
The difference was a four point major decision.
At the end of the day, I think it was a false start on behalf of somebody and I didn't catch it, but he stopped it to force it on the bottom rusher.
In this case, for about an hour.
He got a little bit of a quick start on it.
The referee was talking to the car because he wanted to stop it and they finished the move and put Colonel Meyer on his back.
And I don't think he was expecting that right back up again.
Well, much and he short it out, but he's very powerful and quick.
Oh, yes.
Just real quick.
Go get it.
Yeah.
I hate to to break it down, but it had quite a lot of enthusiasm on behalf of the fans here tonight.
Does a lot of profile with Iowa State Fair.
Oh he gets he's trying to put Colonel Meyer down and then we'd like to get him up on his shoulders if you could.
He has the firearm and he wanted to get the crotch up and ran him over.
Now he's coming to a lot of leverage off that kind of a blitz at the bomb Half Nelson combination.
It's a lot of pressure on the back of the neck but of course his downs with not causing any problem got a little bit too high.
Yes one point escape has got to be 8 to 3.
A lot of riding time can go an injury, certainly.
But stay on the matter here.
There's been command.
There is Chris Campbell, and he's on the Iowa State side now.
You know, yes, he's changed sides, by golly.
The former national champion University of Iowa, and he's an assistant at Iowa State.
We'll go close tonight.
Let us know.
You can see him working on their car.
Looks like it to me that the injury that the injury to Colonel Meyer here comes out of right here.
Doug, you get pretty high on it.
You see it right there.
It's been tough on the back room.
Well, with the arm, with the cross takes him over the top.
There's a one point escape he almost got to, but they turned in on him to keep getting to you.
I was going to say.
They managed the entrance like a muscle spasm.
It could be a muscle spasm of Charlie hard in the calf.
Okay, fine.
Okay, Stop it.
Go.
2 minutes.
10 seconds left in the match.
8 to 3.
I'm sure the Iowa State coaching staff is telling Carr.
Get some points.
Get some points.
You need points.
You never know if you're going to get them pinned.
Getting off points, It doesn't make much difference.
You don't know who's on top because he had an exclusive just right at the buzzer and all it comes running back up to the circle warning against Colonel Meyer.
Well, I think the truth he backed out of the shuffle.
That's pretty tough call look like in the with the blade overall everybody recognizes that movement Yeah I'm sure Tampa three but if you get on a deep chest to chest with it it's tough to believe you're going to going down 10 to 3 with riding time leading tonight.
He wants to put pressure on his man, flatten them out, and then he got the arms up.
You get behind the arm.
Here's your move right here and all good in there.
Wilkie for those up around the upper chest and bang puts him to the mat.
Almost caught him on his back.
Really?
What can happen from there?
You bet.
There's less, Anderson.
You could see Colonel Meyer seeing that bear how coming he started to turn as quickly as he possibly could, managed to get out of it.
That's right.
That's one move.
You don't want to get caught it.
Watkins did a good job of that when he was University of Arkansas national champion.
Come on.
The Naval.
Yes, it was.
Stand up.
Keep me happy.
Colonel Marvin Carr picks him up, knocked him down easy.
Now referees try to come off.
Look at that.
He got a bad knee thrown in there.
He makes it and he came on through with it.
You know, he made Colonel Meyer let go.
I think that was it potentially dangerous and then 10 seconds left.
You got that neuron by putting heavy and that puts a lot of pressure in an upper.
But you notice that they brought him down to the mat.
Well, easy.
The referee in Iowa State best bowl card.
Let him stand up, come to Florida, they get some more points, take him down again, it's five, six and right on time now, we can get eight more points on him.
You've got to make this decision out of it.
They give him a fourth one.
Okay, That's eight.
That is eight, nine, eight with riding time.
And I think they'll say now, yeah, maybe.
Just go ahead, try to finish now.
Get the other guy.
Got to go try for another take California move out one more 12 to 5 with right in time and there's two and that makes it 14 divided by nine with right at home, Ali he now if he can get another takedown, it'll be a superior decision but he's got to do it.
He did.
And what a big decision, a very big takedown.
And there at the end of it has to be a decision.
Iowa State takes the lead.
He is so quick and so strong.
Young girl bomb boy whistle the game that he would just overpower.
He won.
And Iowa State leads 11 to 7 as Nick Card defeats Steve Curl Meyer 17 to 6 and now we get to £158.
Tom Pickard of Iowa State, 18 and five, a sophomore from Baldwinsville, New York against Mark Stephenson of Britt, Iowa for Iowa becomes outstanding wrestler, a senior hundred £58 at Penn.
I look for this to be a good match, just like the rest of them.
Now.
Mark Stephenson has been a constantly improving wrestling fan cup all through his career.
He was 13 and four last year he was third in the Big Ten the year before.
But Pickard, after a slow freshman year, has look awfully good this year and he's going to get in for a takedown.
He had kind of a fireman's carry Kelly combination.
That's what we generally call it.
He almost put Stephenson down for the two pointer.
Here it comes again kind of a Ke bear hug almost every high and he got it now Pickard has been very tough this year.
I don't know for those of you who haven't seen him since last year, he looks like a different wrestler.
He sure does.
He looks for the confident out there.
He's more comfortable at 158, obviously, than he is a 150.
And he'll have to be because Stephenson is a tough one.
41 Iowa State Pickard leads Davis at the very top for us.
The only question about the top one to go ahead my time is your move right here.
It looks like I'm going to be a bear hug attempt.
Move it over right there.
But he slips him behind, takes him for the to the mat for two pointer with kind of a duck under a bear hug combination there.
Terry Hummel, who will be up next at 167 here and can he's Doug Anderson they'll go at it you're looking at you're looking at Mark Stephenson of Brit part of that juggernaut to head up and bring high school for so many years caution to settle that caution on top.
Caution on top.
Less than a minute left in the first quarter.
Want to mention one more time for the fans.
One thing of caution is simply that he gets a quick start on top Auburn over the next time.
That's a one point penalty.
I see the kicker working on a chicken leg and getting that up there pretty high on him from the wrong side for the chicken run and Tony loses it out of bounds.
37 seconds left.
Back to the center, Iowa State against Iowa.
The beginning of a cyclone wrestling, sir, I would state.
I am hoping you enjoying it.
What kind of sit down switch maneuver on behalf of Stevenson.
But it was countered well with a deep waist of a near arm, kind of a near arm trap.
That's the alabaster.
Both of these teams think they have an awful lot of young talent and they've had some injuries this year on both teams as well.
Yes, without question, 14 real serious setbacks with injuries and illnesses.
And now you see pitchers getting that leg out in front.
I think you want a triple and maybe put into the back, but that may cause him some problems.
He doesn't seem to want to worry about it, though.
Does it tell you much you take him up in the wrestling room, David, Tell him not to do that, huh?
Well, that's what I think.
That's what they probably knew the time.
And he probably wanted to take it to the mat, but he looked a little bit breaking down at the end of the first period.
It's coming out okay, get set.
And it was said I would stay for two one star Pickard on top and leading to Stephenson trying to come out steps him got that step in series with that your leg beams as it trying to crank him over with that kind of a half Nelson to the far side but Stephenson is not going to have him do a double green got that double up on top the scissors on top course he has to be up awfully high.
He's very high.
The fans that are watching him, there's a lot of pressure being born down on the bottom.
Russell, when he gets in on those legs like that, because all of his weight plus a great deal more pressure was being carried by the bottom wrestler and that's pretty hard to maintain your base under conditions 4 to 1 score Come on, give Russell about almost a minute.
In the second period, Pickard is leading 4 to 1.
Here's my head level over there.
Put his head right in the armpit.
Right now he's coming into the ball, I'm sure series off of Let's go wing.
And he wants to get again.
As we saw on the Nate Carr match he would like to get the half Nelson on the other side.
There it is But he uses the chicken wing on the far side instead of the near side.
It makes it a little tougher.
There's a lot of combinations off of that dunk, a lot of combinations.
Stephenson is powering by just really cranking down on that arm.
So he doesn't giving up three to give him that half Nelson overload.
Now, look, I want to check in with a lot of people you would see pictured a good jumping over to the other side he on the side that the chicken wing is on the driver but he seems comfortable where he is now.
He has the wing on the other side and he's got control right now and he's got Stephenson pretty low broken down right now.
Mark isn't doing anything on the bottom, but of course, kickers have a lot to do with that because he's got a lot of pressure on him.
Mark Stephenson up it, he's trailing 4 to 1, 3 minutes and 15 seconds of riding time and got him.
He got the double hammer locked up there, it looks like.
But he's got to bring inside.
You can't pin somebody out of bounds.
That's right.
Let's go back inside.
You notice me?
The boy was out of bounds there, but he's not going to bring him back because there was no activity there.
Fake nosebleed.
I think that's possible.
It might just be perspiration.
You get a little slick on the arms and body when that happens away, some of those moves, 58 seconds left in the second period.
It's hickory leaves, just a shorter one.
He has 3 minutes and 20 seconds of riding time.
His team, Iowa State, leads 11 to 7 after the £150 match.
I were down when they car got a superior decision.
But that's been a real tough year on top.
Right.
And he looks tough on he's quick to off that whistle get in there and jam in on the boy that takes that first initial move away from him and that helped a great deal look like he was going for cradle there for a little Stevenson manages to stand up but he only has one leg under him and so Pickard sends him back to the mat again, less than 40 seconds in the second third that I to go out of bounds, took the crowd in pretty well, wrapped up ball on top as far as control is concerned, Mark's having a difficult time getting out of there with that stand up and the set position.
Stephenson Mark is on the bottom.
Pick it on top.
They go on the whistle.
He's behind those arms.
He works behind the arm.
He doesn't want to give Stephenson anything.
Take a little sting to suck back, sucking him back to his shoulder to snap back if you wish to get some foul points.
But Stephenson quickly reacted off of that.
And again, it's a half Nelson from Pickard Stephenson is trying to protect his other arm is working on the upper body but you notice he's working behind those arms as much as he can.
He doesn't want to present any opening for Stephenson on the bottom.
We're in the last few seconds of the second period.
There'll be no further scoring.
It's 4 to 1.
They put their lead back.
First thing I would talk, but I'll tell you, we're having a disagreement with the scoreboard here.
The scoreboard has a 10 to 7 and I've got it 11 to 7 for the meet score.
All right, let's go.
I thought it was a superior decision over that last match.
I want to check that.
I thought it was 17 to 6 in the they said 16, and it's going to make some difference in the third period at one point to make a lot of difference.
Stevenson's on top here, looking behind the arms.
How tall and thicker looked like he'd once come into that sit up position to take that far ahead, bring him over the top, comes into a kind of a partial role, but have no got to know it out No there to get anything out of it feed off in a tough rider.
Yes he is.
He's always been a tough rider all through high school in this go across the shoulder role on behalf of Crawford.
But Stevenson burned out on him.
I got need here.
Well, apparently, as we take a little time here, apparently it is 10 to 7.
Go back to official score and keep going.
It does appear that Nate Carr didn't get the 11 point decision.
Your move right here, Another good shoulder roll, Stevenson counter.
Well, and Pickett got to me in the eye.
That's why the momentary stop here will sit out position.
He'd like to split those arms and go into the stand up get his one point is again now back to a whizzer by Pickard Yeah that arm over the over hook from the rear a little bit more control but the the member to move ball poised to make off of that if they want to do that Stevenson hanging in there tough got about 2 minutes left on the bench 2 minutes left Stevenson trails by three and here he is will not be able to make up the writing.
Time seems to be rising all the way up.
Switch to a sit out maneuver on behalf of Pickard, but not a real serious attempt.
Here comes a roll.
WALLACE On his role there, he took himself his base pretty hard to follow through off of that with your shoulder roll and Stevenson staying right on.
Mark Stevenson looking real good in there, right up on top.
But he has to have some points.
He needs poise.
Yes, he's got to get some activity going for four points because right now he's behind 4 to 1 now.
Well, you hit it on the bottom and it's going to have to get moving or he's got to get focused on me.
That's true power got to come up out of the half a minute and 5 seconds left.
But again, another 25 seconds and the Thunder riding time with the race Norwood needed.
He had no chance in the racing right?
Crowd Oh, he gets a up with that deep waistband.
Your arm trying to control that in your arm, but because making some attempts in there.
But he just had good things put together.
But he misses riding real tough with a lot of pressure.
Well, that's how well he was fortunate enough to go to the outside of that.
He just went outside a little strong as it's up, it's okay.
But back inside today, pick your country, move on your leg out.
Well, it fits in with that shoulder roll.
But Stevenson countered well by going to perform group one two points.
Good offensive maneuver.
Good.
Got it.
33 seconds left.
And Gable just told Mark Stevenson, you got to catch him.
You got to catch him.
And as you got to finish him on his back, at any rate, left 22 seconds left.
This thing for Peter to do, it gets him off, gets going in the first hands.
And likewise, he's got to go for point.
He's right up on top without pressure.
10 seconds left of the stand up, thrown in on difficult.
But he figured he's not going to gamble at this point now.
But he keeps telling the boys, he keeps telling the boys over there, don't worry, I got it.
I got it.
But it's 4 to 1.
There will be writing time for kicker Tucker.
Here we go.
2 seconds.
And unless something miraculous happens in 2 seconds, it's going to be a 5 to 1 victory for third of Iowa State.
5 to 2 makes the team score.
Iowa State 13, Iowa seven.
We'll be back with more on the Iowa issue wrestling duo after station ID.
We'll be back in just one moment.
Right behind those two toughest dunks, £167, Harry Hummel of Iowa State against Doug Anderson from and Iowa.
Doug Anderson is a tough senior Hummel has been an outstanding freshman he's from going darling he lives in Urbandale.
He's one of the top two in the country, by the way.
That's right.
And he's in there tough on that single, that high clock.
So he's right now Now he takes it pressure, get it out of the league with it, puts him down for two.
But Anderson said, I'm not going to let you do with it.
He's working him off by pushing in there.
Tough official shoulder.
And he did it, too.
He did not that late.
Snap down to the map.
This is the late where Iowa lost Mike Deanna.
And that's a major loss for 150.
They didn't have Scott casino.
Oh, that's just terrible.
There are two super Russell have both boys gone But I'll tell you, this shows how deep Iowa is.
They've had they've had Fitzgerald in there who's done beautifully.
And now Doug Anderson is another toughie from Ankeny and he's he's good.
Both these boys are former state champions in the state.
They know each other pretty well.
Think the first minute he's gone and the first minute of the match trouble over kind of a single double shot on behalf of whole shot defensive defensive one one he started That's a star warning against Anderson for inactivity.
He's backing out of there his way there in the center.
Now here at Coliseum.
Anderson has a real strong door, of course, almost going to, but it's very noticeable on Hummel.
He's got those muscles and stick out there for the good Underhook in about 12,000, I'd say 5000, five or maybe 15,000 people here at Hilton Coliseum.
All right.
So watch this.
First of two this year, Iowa, Iowa State.
Hey, hey, that's another stall on him.
And that one is the one against Doug Anderson.
Well, the humble to making the shots and Anderson has not come in there and he's been pretty much defensive all the way.
And that's the reason for the call.
Heating up the no activity.
I'm all almost play reading the action, so to speak.
And he shot him there a couple times and he'll be going to get in for pretty quick.
This will be the end of the period.
Very, very, very high on your choice gets his choice and he picks down and wants to get out here and pile up points.
All right.
The last two I get said Iowa State.
Go ahead, Iowa.
He won two state championships at the Mind Voluntary Hummel 155 and 167 over your shoulder all forward roll.
But Anderson countered well and I'm looking back to his base, to his knees rather than put himself in a precarious situation where he might get two back points against the Iowa State, leads in the team score 13 to £767.
We still have some awfully big matches coming up, the Banach boys for Iowa against Allen and for and that big heavyweight match against here comes here for it.
Oh, nice move.
One point scored two to nothing trouble He works out real well That was well executed.
It kind of kept Anderson away from his body, got his knees to the outside control that risk turned himself over.
Well, that's overall, Anderson, looking for kind of a spin around control.
Sorry.
Go on.
CHAKRABARTI Throw that under.
I'm a college girl.
When you shoot that far, you've got to be prepared to get a few spinners and come out here.
We have a lot of activity behind as far as the noise is concerned tonight.
Yeah, there are people fired up here.
You know, Iowa is definitely the favorite.
Now, Iowa State's leading 13 to 7 here at £167.
Now, this Lesley Gore, this is wrestling at its best.
Two super powers in a single leg is humble and it's hard to referee Pat McCormack said that Anderson was on his knees.
He went down beyond.
He figured he was beyond normal.
Reaction times will get him the two here.
Here it comes.
Right here.
Here's your shoulder roll on behalf of the hammer for the one point escape.
He turned in on him and nicely, Nicely done.
Hummel now leads four to nothing with a minute 35 left, second period.
Hummel is back on top again.
He has only 3 seconds of advantage time.
He got a takedown too close to the end of a period and it's 28 seconds of advantage time for Anderson.
I got you.
I'm a tough rider chopping that near arm, real tough and jamming in on Anderson to break him down.
Anderson's got it for his feet.
Try to get the Whizzer, but Hamill took it away from him with an ankle.
Pick the down low against it It he's his is he can he appears to be where he can be tight enough on top as a as a writer, you know, we're waiting here real tight.
But he also was going to loosen up with it.
It looks like he's just a super rider.
He does the right things at the right time, I guess is the best way of saying you're looking at the Iowa bench.
And a moment ago you saw the Iowa state bench and there he seems to be a slight difference in mood, although nobody's confident enough to smile yet either.
A minute left, second period coming over the it's Anderson stood up and turned in on and I don't know you got to go back down one point on.
Terry Lane Gordon on the move right here now.
He brings him back in some of the football.
He thought he should have had a point for not wrestling him aggressively, maybe trying to get off the edge of the mat, but that wasn't the case necessarily.
I'll tell you, you look on that side huddle and look at him and go, it's borderline and then go shooting in with a double.
But he couldn't make it out.
38 seconds left.
Fourth quarter won Iowa State.
That's why he hasn't got a lot of noise around that side.
I'll tell you, you look at that side in this place, when Iowa wrestles Iowa State and it looks like a who's who of wrestling but 25 seconds left in this.
The second three, the ones who are still in uniform and the ones who are already gone, graduated with nothing in here, anywhere.
Well, you spin around for two.
Well, he was probably just waiting until it was too late to counter it.
This it was a good double leg shot and he got the pick with it, what we call a pick.
Snap his head, shoulders behind for the two.
And that's the end of the second period, £167 oh 36 This time Hummel will come as you move right here now, and that's going to get to the rim deep good penetration takes his base with him, spins around behind, snaps out here and comes in for the two Harry Hummel from from West on Dowling leading 6 to 1 over Doug Anderson of Ankeny just a few miles north.
Are you down here to that was another basic takedown You notice 3 to 4 talented these kids are but they all use the basics but they get good technique on it.
Now there's a deep waste in their arm that's, the arm chop there, that's a basic.
The good ones do it.
It's nice standup football.
Anderson That was a nice move.
Six The two is a score.
And now Hummel who got a number of points on his feet up to now, as a matter of fact got a of months darling I want us all for it is in again couldn't get the double What was that he shot off him a little bit too far to right Scalextric on and I think the referee was tied up by Anderson.
He did a real nicely and they did a great thing very that Anderson made a couple of shots at that time.
He's got a lot more offense going.
Hummel comes in on the high court Sorry, you may turn it into two.
Here's his trip on the other leg but he get it down 0.00 points out nice counter on behalf of Anderson you know he's a wizard he came around front.
Well done.
2 minutes left now in the third period here at 167, Iowa State leads in the team score by six.
And we're trying to build it with.
Another double header shot by Hummel.
He's in real well this time trying to think back to that good penetration got around behind all 9 to 2.
Now it's a matter of can he go to that points to get some extras.
Oh what a minute and 41 seconds left.
I'm sure he's got plenty of time.
He has it on.
He's to go.
I'm all against Anderson.
Almost couldn't get it on the double that time has to shoot for a single hop luxury that never get get the I see the was he's working hard to make something out of it.
We have a minute and 13 seconds to film.
Well, that was good with the film.
It keep in mind with the fans are still made is a position where neither boy can necessarily improve his position without without forfeiting his position, so to speak.
Now, Hummel is empty.
When you double again, you're right, He leads 11 to 3 and he has a riding time advantage.
911 to 3.
He leads by eight with riding time 50 seconds light up a come up again was your intention to release for the one point again, we'd like to build up that major superior area.
Another shot a little bit too far.
Yeah.
Seven.
And now it is a major now trying to score doesn't change.
We should say a make a decision in winning by 8 to 12.
That's about 12 or more 13 your poll and again, he's tough on that.
But the noise is done.
We have 8 seconds and seven and 6 seconds, but he doesn't have time enough to use it.
I think only one second.
And it is with time.
Harry Hummel of Iowa State defeats Doug Anderson of Iowa Walk down the floor and Iowa State now is in the 17 to 7 over Iowa who have errors.
The winner Harry Hummel Make your decision the Fort Worth it for Iowa State and now we get the best country around.
Here's where the twins come back and move out of Iowa.
And here at 177, Ed Banach, who was the winner of the Midlands Tournament at £177 against Dave Allen, it's his first match since coming back from a rib injury.
He's nine and three.
Allen was third in the Nationals when he goes high cruncher.
If I say Iowa State his wrestling fired up tonight Morris you appear to be a minute 30 left and he has plenty of time to do something with it if he can and we'll find out what Faneca does to counter look after their spot him to the man.
Just a spot to go low pressure gets an inside by his foot into the man for 240.
And remember, this is just the first of seven cyclone wrestling mates which will be bringing you here on ITV.
And what a way to start in Iowa against Iowa State.
Good enough.
And Allen leads with a minute and 10 seconds left.
Mannix got up and tried to get turned in for the one, but Allen stayed right with it.
Doc Allen on top.
He did a beautiful job last year in the Nationals.
He finished third in the Big eight and had a tough time there and finished third and they started the Nationals and there's a real good wrestler at back coming around Good move nice Robinson to do he did Allen managed to get me high about Allen goes to the Citadel like a game medical he's got to put it you've got to get him up and up front but he's only got that thunder look he caught both of them.
You make him around for two.
Oh man, It got out on his back.
And here's up that one.
Allen is on his back.
Oh, he's in there top.
I tell you, panic has really got a hold on him this time.
Allen, For him to hit.
He's got it right.
Oh, welcome.
This could be a big one.
Big one.
Big one.
20 seconds left.
He's got him real diving early and it's a pin for back against Allen.
And that could be a turn around.
Oh, what about that?
He's got and that came through 6 minutes and 44 seconds later the how better than 44 seconds.
The winner is Barnett.
And I'll tell you, that's one that I really had to go.
What are your number?
Last year, the same thing happened.
They got caught by yeah, by Paul at £177.
Here's the Here comes gold right here.
Now, he got him a new one, right?
And he looks like he's down there for keeps.
You got them walking on him just to just And now it's up top and from here on 17 to 13 and I'll tell you, that can take a lot of the wind out of this crowd.
It took a lot of us, a lot of good jump out of and a single leg attempt on his elbow.
710 to 13 for a three pointer single in the middle, gone for three against no he better force he's been filling in for like man and night Russell at heavyweight and force he just looked very good You look at Tucker record right now in the early stage of the first period leading to zero.
Well, Ed Bennett of Iowa, a happy young man who could have turned this whole meet around.
Oh, yes.
He should go to 17 the 13th.
That still needs final, final.
And that's what championship teams are made out to.
That's right.
You better come back when the going gets tough.
It's just what he did that minute.
5 seconds left in the first period, John Force, he has been the backup man behind both Allen and man this year.
But he's looked so good that he's got his spot on there 190 tonight.
He's letting real tough on Bennett and the brother of it At this point.
They're back with the sweat's on His twin brother is out there now that's Louis.
You know, Banach is a math major and Louis is a pharmacy major there.
Just end up split the hands and turn for one point escape on the half a minute and it's 2 to 1 for she looks like Mike Heath up on the upper body moves.
You get a trip there but of course he counted off And now the question will be who will go at heavyweight for Iowa State because they have two men listed, Dave Olson Ball, the big man and Mike Man, who is 190 pounder.
And he goes for she decided he was not in the right spot and he came back out again.
This is going to be a tough match.
This one right here, both boys are going to be in here real tough because it just from the initial parts of this first career, they both made some good offensive moves from the colonies and forces on the way Horseshoe stick.
And with only 10 seconds left in the period doubtful.
Now, here's whether your man can do anything with them possession Well for forces in there in that single but panics got him pressured after that and then try to maneuver one second left Just one.
Just one second.
Not thought I'm going BLOCK And that's it choices here.
But I got 1 seconds out.
Turn it out.
You'll want to get right now.
The referee is telling the second period we call the end of the period they don't want to shoot with one second left.
He doesn't want somebody banging ahead.
No sense and no one's going to do it in one second.
Caution chops it out to a standup.
He gets off, hits good.
He may come in, but four takes him right back out.
He's tough on top.
You got that hitting number with him.
He plays Louis Bartok from Port Jervis, New York, a sophomore actually is a freshman eligibility.
John Forsey is a junior from Ann Arbor, Michigan.
He's got that step in series from the chair side.
Maddox stands up there out of bounds.
Both boys are played after they let activity on the part of both boys in here.
Well, all right.
Coming off, 30 seconds left, second period.
It's Iowa State's 42.
MANEK one oh.
Iowa State leads in the team score by four.
Oh, it's such an important match at this point.
In the second year, Doug, we might mention all a little 20 seconds running time for 40.
Danica's up, of course, and touching down again.
He's managed panic has managed to get to his feet.
The course has managed to get his man back on the mat again to keep off base by force is taking him right back down.
He's done a bad act like when he hits the mat to jump right into a slip, but caution is blocked at every time.
I'll say one thing that both these boys are moving and when this match is over, that both for him to be tied for third, both would let a lot of boos out there, not a lot of points, a lot of move.
2 minutes, 3 seconds left.
Second period.
The crowd is quieted down quite a lot since that last match.
That really changed the tenor of things around here.
Bhatia is up awfully high, but he's now behind where he wants to be, still grinding hard against Banach.
Back then, a kid like to sit up to a stand if he can just come into a stand up alone.
But he's up there up on that upper body with a lot of pressure.
He doesn't want to get too high over here behind me on thing, the boy on top that I remember in this case for sure, when he does come up, you've got to maintain a good things up there.
He could be easily taken of it from his feet out about a minute and 2012 seconds to go.
2 minutes, 21 seconds.
Right in time for Iowa State, right?
Well, I tell you, I would if I were a heavyweight, sometimes I wonder if I'd say like it always coming down to them.
That's right.
That happens quite often.
I there was a move afoot and I recommend that to the coaches if they want to juggle their lineups with the big boys, start number one finish.
But I don't think very much ever happened.
Not much once in a while come out whether they can do so if they want to.
Mutually agree, but not many of them do it.
Or she has 2 minutes and 43 seconds of writing time and he's been on top there a long while.
And it hasn't been the case where Burdick hasn't been trying to work, because we have we just now got a warning for all us that's going to I, I would assume the referee saying he's just writing on top and not going for anything else.
Drill, you have to make an attempt to pin your man.
And according to Pat McCormack, there hasn't been an evidence to the one Medicus is just boy, he comes back up there time.
But for him, right back down now he's coming into the winner.
Move it.
Doesn't have it in very deep, not very deep breaths He's got that near ankle a bit and he's driving in on him to run out of bounds.
Got 25 seconds left.
It's 2 to 1.
This is Ed Bennett, our Louis Braddock.
There's less, Anderson, looking out at his Iowa State team.
John Corsi, whose record is 26 and five this year in what are 88, those arms down touchdown.
Everyone doesn't want to get himself in trouble.
Okay.
He's riding real tough at this point.
Put him on the mat.
Look up now.
Of course, he would like to get something different out of it.
We got Joe Bennett down tough on his face with only one second left.
You heard nothing will happen.
And there's the end of the second period.
Two.
Fortunately, he has 3 minutes and 43 seconds of riding time.
And I'll tell you, the crowd has now come back alive.
This is your head.
It's up.
And really, this place is jumping.
They win this one.
You see, that puts him out.
But 20 to 30, it's a big one here.
It puts him back down.
0300, I That's pretty clever.
Cradle on him.
And boy, you're going after that.
I'll tell you this.
I thought at the beginning this would be a tough one.
And it is.
It will freeze.
Boy, you tough.
We're moving real well.
Medicare, a lot of good news and for sure you really got caught off and asked to score Iowa State by four.
You see, if if he wins, Iowa cannot win.
That's right.
And he needs go on coming up the back door.
No, he may get two on of there.
He's got to bring this up two now.
We'll see.
We shall see.
He's in tough on the leg.
Oh, nice move by Bennett.
He's coming on the ball over there if he can.
He's back one for 40.
It's now 3 to 1.
But remember the course he has writing time for.
She trying to get it on the high clock back up over the top of his collar with that lock on top 40 is in behind for two No he didn't call it to yet again he gave the two 5 to 1.
But now panic has forced he up high and he got out of that and hit him up higher, up for one.
Now he's gone in four, two, one four to nothing yet in neutral position right now.
0543, three and it's 5 to 3.
Oh man, what a match.
I'll tell you, both boys were just whistling your heart out.
That's the guy who has anything left of a cut over Mannix.
I think we're going to stop here and got that mop up.
Move right here.
No, no.
If he comes back off his face, but he comes right up behind, he's going to listen to the first one He turns in for the one for this case.
That was a good move on Bennett.
A lot of enthusiasm here, right down there.
The crowd very large here in Iowa State crowd, of course.
Here's our schedule, by the way.
We're waiting for this exciting finish.
Wisconsin will be will have the play by three on Thursday to pick Lehigh on Monday the 14th.
You and I on first to the 17th Oklahoma State the number one ranked team on Monday, the 21st, Michigan on February 4th and Michigan State on February, all at 10:30 p.m. And the first good is this one 5 to 4 minute 47 seconds left in this, the third period, 5 to 4.
Iowa State leading the scorers, 5 to 4.
Right now, panic is trying to force it on his back.
It would just open it in on him cause he's going to have to come up move it's going to have to get that head up a minute 30 left.
Notice how he gets that head up and go up to the that hit up Look away from that half Nelson You make it fall off the edge of the map force.
He has the writing time, remember, and it cannot be taken away from him.
He will get a point where he's got to be moving underneath pressure.
Matic is going to be setting up.
He's going to be working hard now again, he's trying to get that to half Nelson, drive him over.
He possibly can back points, could win it and a cradle and bend it slip matic slipped but he got on his back anyway.
And it's the same thing that happened to Alan him on his back at the end of the match.
Oh, with 55 seconds left.
It's such a former referee watching down.
In the meantime, he's real tough.
Dan Gable is all the way to the other side of the map to watch what's going on.
And for sure, he has got himself in bad trouble.
And it put him there on the 40 seconds and there's a pause.
Make it count for these Matic brothers.
What do they do?
Better than that.
But all the extra manpower, that was an excellent match by both boys.
You know, it was interesting there because panic actually slipped.
You could see you.
Of course, he was able to turn into it, but Matic recovered with that.
But the bear hug and the very same thing happened with Alan and Ed Bennett.
There it is right here.
There's a move.
He's got him down and he's got him tight.
Got it Sprawled out on top of him.
Jeff, the chest with a lot of pressure down and your half when it comes on one right there.
And again, we've had two big switches in mood here.
We've done it tough.
Mike Mann for Iowa State against Vinny.
Mike Mann is a 190 pounder of Iowa State and he's wrestling heavyweight against a big man here, Dave Finney.
And this will decide the match and then goes in on the lead.
He's not afraid to go on, but Finney would probably sprawl if he could.
And man him down.
But Finney has the lead, has a yard and a career problem.
Let's keep a better quality through 50.
He got in everybody.
But the thing is a lot of weight off the floor and boy, what a man what a mean They used to call the Oklahoma Oklahoma State series a Bedlam series.
Yeah.
I don't know what you call this one.
Yeah.
I think this is a tough hit.
So it's been a tremendous match.
John Dean Finney was being warned to watch that elbow because it's a dangerous position or could become that man's got to get his head up and get moving underneath them in order for me to stay on top and get that writing done.
Mike Mann is a 190 power, and he's moving up to heavyweight against Dean Finney.
Then he's leading on an ankle pretty tough on the far side.
He's giving him a lot of weight, breaking him down, man, trying to come to her feet here we have 40 seconds.
He's been up for one and it's out.
He's now 2 to 1.
Finney finishes record his 12 on floor man minus two man Also had a rib injury this year.
Yeah.
And he's coming off that 20 seconds left first period here.
His man doesn't want to get fit his weight on top of him.
Then he goes in for any kind of leave, moves on for a takedown to conserve.
He can get in deep enough, He can get the takedown, but otherwise he's got to be careful not to get all that weight on him or he's going to lose the takedown.
And that's just exactly what we're talking.
That's what happened with him.
Plenty hot headed, a bit more like that.
And Coach Harold Nichols of Iowa State shakes his head.
He didn't think that Mike ought to try that, just as you were saying there.
When you get that splits, that's off the cuff to move on and on these big kids and take them down with that kind of a move is an excellent maneuver.
But too much weight and it's hard to beat behind that big boy.
4 to 1 drop.
And then he has a minute and 7 seconds of right in time and is trying to get out on the counter, sit out maneuver.
But it didn't come to any.
Let me point out to very big fall by the Banach brothers have made this Iowa's meet so now they'll just sit out of pick by Mike and Finney Burton on him and the Hawks came from behind in both of those matches.
The Manics were behind at the time.
Now, man out to for your shoulder roll for the one point ski jump.
I don't think the shoulder ever touched the man because that's what they call a cartwheel.
Well, a great one of being cyclones.
And he got here.
They've got to have a win.
They're going to win it.
Iowa State gets Iowa, win.
They got a draw, of course, but give Iowa away in order to get away as they finish coming in, coming in here.
So, so big.
If you don't dare.
I didn't get that.
You can do both.
And so Dean Phinney was taking a shot.
6 to 2.
He's up by four as lead and he has right high and go, Oh wow, that's Johnny on top.
He was an outstanding wrestler at Clearlake High School, State and heavyweight champion, as was Mike Mann, the state champion at Marshalltown High School at 185 85 on.
Here's man trying to come out the back and put on his wrestling tough but that's carrying a lot of weight right down right low.
Here's your maneuver right here on man a nice shoulder, all for a one point escape.
That's what we're supposed to be doing a minute, 17 seconds.
In the second period, 6 to 2 Iowa leads Iowa's heavyweight finish lead.
Man 6 to 3.
Iowa leads in the match, 19 to 7.
The cyclones have won five matches.
Iowa has won four big ones, two big fall.
Anderson And a major decision.
What I mean, really, that hurt too bad.
Too much power and hurt.
You think you got that over under Cornell right now?
That's what they call it.
Sometimes man comes back to his base, 40 seconds, 40 seconds left.
Second period, the man is out, the score is 6 to 3.
And the turn in oh oh, I can see saying like he wants to do that.
The heavyweight move get 40 runs tied up.
He's got the height on Mike Murphy like to get the leverage like that in the deep but he's he's just too big too powerful given that weight this falls right on him.
Benny doing what he should do he crossface and walking around behind 6 seconds left in this the second period he no points a six.
The three is a star finish leads and he has a lot of writing time.
He has 3 minutes and 5 seconds.
Six, three.
Here comes the move.
Right?
You're not going to let my front in the rookie notches basis with him, but just too much weight and pressure on top.
He couldn't put it into two points.
Top three, three, six, three.
Hey, can you hear the referee there, Carol Nichols?
Boy, I'll tell you, he's thinking, oh, I know.
He doesn't look back at Marshall.
He's looking ahead.
He's nice, this match, man, to pull something out of his team.
But the baddest brothers of Iowa have been too much so far.
Oh, get out of the mindset.
Tough rider.
He's an excellent wrestler, but he's wrestling a big boy here.
But they'd like to have him jamming and jamming forward.
Take him to the mat if he can.
He's also going to be doing that well right now.
Oh, and he stands up and goes to the leg and there's the brawl again.
He sprawls on him much longer, but he'll sprawl, giving his weight and a walk around behind him.
He's picking that ball right now.
He's getting the frustration on him.
He just gives him his weight, straightened his legs out.
He'll be around all that could end up in the third me.
But I don't look for three right now.
He gave it to me for 2 minutes and 5 seconds left.
The score is now 823.
An intentional release.
I feel that 8 to 4 that he has right in time.
He's got some excellent movement, but the voice is too big for my control and.
That's 10 to 4, Jenny, by 600 hockey figure.
Well, it's beginning to look like it was a valiant try here by Mike Mann and also a valiant try by the Iowa State Cyclones right here.
And I'll tell you what, if I had to have guessed what the outcome of come would be in individual matches all the way down the line, I don't think I have come off quite the same way up there.
Just getting the ball out of Mr. Few right now.
He got it really looked for a while as if Iowa State was going to manage to pull this one out, have it locked up by this time.
And the panicked brothers both trailing it at the time they pulled it, each trailing at the time manage down and turn a 17 to 13 lead into a 1917 Iowa Iowa lead.
And here is a ten point lead for Dean.
Finish You clear?
Like I always have it, you just hold them back and finish with one four falling on top.
Referee felt he was just holding, not going for the ball no matter.
It wasn't a bad ball at all because he is riding on top.
He had control without question, but he's got to be a little more defensive on top going for the ball and would like to have.
But then he had a really deep, really deep tight waist and we have a clock up above there running up at the last seconds of this week.
Iowa against Iowa State.
My love for this game, 10 to 5 and went in for the double man's knocked over then he stepped out walked run behind to finish by seven finish by 730 20 seconds left there trying to stack them a lot of writing time.
It will be it appears now at eight point major to say for definitive and I'll tell you the University of Iowa is really going to get away with this one.
And he looked up tonight, look up, and that makes it an eight point decision, 23 for Iowa and 17 for Iowa State, another man alive.
I'll tell you this, this one went right down to the end and we had some tremendous some tremendous occurrences there in the highways.
Oh, boy.
I'll say some big ones.
Really nice falls, of course, were phenomenal.
And now let's go down the way to find out what happened tonight.
I'll tell you, some people are still going to want to order in £18.
Dan Glenn defeated Mike Paco's to get Iowa off four to nothing.
The score was 13 to 4.
A major decision.
Still a good match.
Excellent.
126 Iowa State got its first big one of the night they took Jim Lord Jeff Kerber, and he won 5 to 2 over the four time as a three time champion in high school, defeating a four timer and it was 4 to 3.
Iowa at 134, Randy Lewis won, as expected, 18 to 12.
But did he get a handful tonight?
Oh, boy, I'll say two.
Jim Gibbons took him all the way down to the end and it was an 18 to 12 three point Iowa victory.
Iowa led 7 to 3.
Then Dave Brown got Iowa back up, Iowa State back up within one with a 6 to 2 victory over Lenny Zaleski.
Nate Carr got a major decision over Steve Curdle.
Meyer at £150 and Iowa State led for the first time 10 to 7.
Tom Pickard defeated Mark Stephenson 5 to 2, 13 to 7.
Perry Hummel, a ten point winner over Doug Anderson at 167, setting the stage for the major problems at the end for Iowa State.
Ed Banach pinned Dave Allen in a minute and 44 seconds after trailing Louis Bennett at 190, pinned John Force in 722 while trailing and Iowa led 19 to 17 and the heavyweight match, Dean Finney hung right on to it, 13 to 5 over.
Mike Mann filling in at heavyweight coming up from 190 and Iowa, one at 23 to 19.
Holy cow.
That was a super match match.
Well, we hope you enjoyed this first match of IPB and Cyclone Wrestling series.
