Iowa Public Television Sports brings you the battle for state bragging rights.
The interest date rivals Number three ranked Iowa Hawkeyes battle the number six ranked Iowa State Cyclones.
In a meet where you can expect the unexpected.
Good afternoon, everybody.
I'm Doug Brown with Tim Johnson.
Welcome to our final college wrestling meet of the season.
We're going to give you an address a little bit later on where you can write in with your comments.
And then next week we'll be in Des Moines Veterans Auditorium for the high school championship tournament starting live here on Iowa Public Television at 630 next Saturday night.
Now we're going to talk about Iowa and Iowa State meeting for the fourth time this year.
And it seems in the last dual meets, their seasons have been edging in different directions.
Well, they certainly have.
Iowa went on a road trip last weekend against Arizona State.
Number two ranked and number one ranked Oklahoma State.
They didn't come away with a win, but they came away with a tie and a tough one point loss.
And they came away believing, Doug, that they're in the big three of wrestling in 1990.
They definitely are.
And Iowa State, on the other hand, has had some injuries and some tough luck lately.
Iowa State was coming on in late January.
They were making some progress, but they've gone into a slump lately.
But injuries have had a big deal.
A lot to do with that.
And it doesn't help when Steve Hamilton, their best wrestler, gets hurt last weekend and a two time all-American Gary McCall is out of the lineup.
That's definitely tough.
We don't know which of those men are either one of them that will be in this meet.
But we talked to both coaches earlier about their season so far.
And let's meet Jim.
You had some uncertainties with injuries.
What are you expecting to accomplish in this meet with the injuries?
Well, I think that that that right up and down the line, we're looking for some given individual improvement in our guys out there and the way they take the man.
I think that Iowa there's probably no team that's probably more aggressive in the country right now and we've got to be able to handle them, go up there toe to toe with them physically.
And last I mean, I didn't think we did that.
And that's that's that's probably the biggest thing I'm looking for on this team today.
Now, what's the status of Hamilton?
Hamilton is kind of been a day by day thing starting well, Thursday.
And I'm going to take a look and see how he warms up out there.
Recall, that is probably had some a little bit more injury problems and Hamilton has at this point.
But you know, see he's got a legitimate shot at winning the national championship this year.
And I don't want to jeopardize that by bringing him back to early coach, After your meeting with the contenders and getting ready for this nationals, where are the Hawkeyes now?
Well, I think we've proven ourselves that we can go nationally and actually be a national title contender based on that last weekend with Arizona State and Oklahoma State.
But it's kind of like you need to prove it week after week if you're going to be a steady team.
We have been a fairly, fairly steady team all year, actually, real steady.
And I'm looking for another steady performance today against Iowa State.
However, I'd have to admit that it's probably kind of ironic that we've had Russell on four times, but at the same time having three victories over him.
I feel that this week we really didn't peak at all.
And consequently I think I can get started again for the national championship from a peaking point of view.
After this week.
Over the years, these two teams have had some ding dong battles with each other, But Iowa has had its its way pretty much lately.
Well, they certainly have.
They've won eight in a row and 18 out of the last 20 they've had their way in the eighties.
So we think they're going to be some outstanding matches.
Let's let's look at £126 because honestly, these two young men have really improved this year.
Well, Terry Brands, where he's at right now is he just got done annihilating the defending national champion Kendall Cross from Oklahoma State.
But Dan Knight is on a roll as well.
Dan Knight's won 13 out of his last 15 matches.
His only loss coming to Tom Brands.
Now a test tonight against Brother Terry.
And there's another test at 167 between two young men who've beaten each other this year.
Bart Charles Vig was a very important name in the Iowa line up this year as a very crucial wait for them to win the national championship.
And it looks good for them.
With Bart doing really well and Matt Johnson has beaten them.
Here's a talented wrestler.
Matt Johnson has won one out of three times against Bart Charles Vick.
He's a very talented freshman.
He's dangerous, too.
He has 12 pins.
Why now?
I don't know.
Do you, T.J.?
Is this the year that Iowa State can upset Iowa?
I'm not sure we can go as far as that.
Well, I don't think we can go that far, Doug, but this meet is very important to both coaches.
You heard Coach Gibbons earlier say this is important from an individual standpoint, the kind of gains they can make from an individual standpoint.
And Dan Gable says it's a team thing.
He wants to peak for the Nationals and they have had some big meets.
Maybe they'll be just a little down this week.
We'll see.
It's Iowa and Iowa State coming up from Hilton Coliseum on Iowa Public Television.
But on the next Smithsonian world, our nation's food to follow our struggle for survival.

Where can you find my boy?
I got a joke for America's favorite clown only on Iowa public television in March.
We're back at Hilton Coliseum and aim to spoil the match between the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Iowa State Cyclones and there you see Harold Nichols, who's here with the red flower celebrating the 1965 championship teams return.
You'll see some of those people later.
And there's Dan Gable on the left who one of Harold Nichols great successes as a wrestler and now the coach of the Iowa Hawkeyes.
The Hawks have lost twice to Oklahoma State.
That's all they've lost this year.
They lead by one in the matches held here in Ames over the years, although they have a heady lead because of their success in Iowa City, Iowa, against Iowa State, They're meeting for the fourth time this year.
And here are the matchups that we have.
These are the people who weighed in today at the various weights.
Now nothing looks out of the ordinary there, perhaps, although Gary McCall is missing from the Iowa state line up, he has a neck injury.
They're hoping to hold him up and get him ready for later on in the upper weights.
However, Colt Vette and Hamilton both weighed in for Iowa.
Iowa State because Hamilton is injured.
Trammell is, of course, replacing Mark Rylan at 158 in the Iowa lineup.
He'll be there right through the end of the year.
Kelly and Canalys.
It may be canalys at 77.
FINCH For Iowa, you notice and at heavyweight, each team weighed in two.
Now you may never have seen the name Ferrone at heavyweight for Iowa, but we'll tell you about that as it goes on.
Here's a football player who's a former state wrestling champion in New Jersey, Tim Johnson.
Well, he's an offensive lineman for the Hawks and he wants to get in there and wrestle a little bit.
We'll see what happens later on, how things go.
Now, you'll notice that Dan Gable has a cast on his left hand.
And again, he was he was wrestling in the wrestling room with Keith Trammel.
He's trammell's a dangerous guy.
He is because Keith Rambo is the one that Mark Rylan was wrestling when he broke his jaw.
And so Jim Gibbons here in his five years successful career at Iowa State, has won one national championship.
You see him getting his 118 pounder, Kael sponsor ready, Jeff, the referee tonight is Pete George of Wheaton, Illinois.
He's wired for sound.
You'll be able to hear him talk.
We'll listen in on any discussions he might have with the coaches, with the officials you hear from, particularly Dan Gable.
There's that left hand.
And you see his assistant coaches, Barry Davis, there on the right of Mark Johnson on the left of the screen, we go to 118, Steve Martin for the Hawks at Cal Sponsor at 118 for Iowa State.
And both wrestlers were winning records.
Mark is ranked fifth in the country, although he's coming off a loss to Tony Keller of Oklahoma State in that big dual meet we brought for you last Saturday's last Sunday afternoon from Stillwater.
Well, this is an important match for both wrestlers here, sponsoring on the single little high crotch.
But Martin was able to counter it off right there.
But I was saying this is importa they're scary.
Marco's hurt and Cale sponsor has to be ready to fill that spot for good If McCall isn't able to go and hopefully for Iowa State, McCall will be able to be ready to go.
But they have to depend on this Young man from Johnston, Iowa, sponsor.
He's a two time national Place winner.
He's an all-American and he's seventh.
I'm sorry, McCall and sponsors filling in for him and on the leg again, trying to control the talent to up the big take down a little Kelly there.
And he was able to get the angle on him and continue through for the two points.
Now, MARTIN On the other hand, an all-American last year, Iowa needs him to be an All-America again this year because they don't have any really room to spare.
There was the role for Mark, and that's the kind of move you expect out of the Gravity specialist.
And it's now 2 to 1 in favor of the Cyclones.
Sponsor made a nice move underneath against Martin.
This is a big match for Iowa State.
They want to get out fast here in the home crowd.
They want to they want to take advantage of what they think is a good chance to win at 118.
The last time these two met three two to victory for Martin at the national team championships over sponsor sponsor has been close to both the the Hawkeye 118 pounders because he had a 3 to 1 match he lost to Zaffidal the last duel meet in Iowa City.
We'll give you a good idea what kind of kid he is here in the Coaches Appreciation Award.
Last year during his redshirt season.
As for his hard work in the wrestling room and they're hoping it pays off tonight against the fifth year senior Steve Martin out of Virginia wrestling for the Hawkeyes.
Lance would like to get something out of that would be front headlock position up there, but we're back out at long range again co-sponsor when I was 14 and eight he leads 2 to 1.
The first grade, as you know, is 3 minutes long in college wrestling.
The second one is 2 minutes.
The third is was also two.
Martin has the single leg right on the edge of the mat against a weather counter by sponsored sponsored gave up his hips a little too easily right there Martin was in on the leg, but it seemed like Spencer could have been able to hip out a little harder.
Now he has a Whizzer in and keeping Martin from getting the two points, so he's keeping a tight whizzer there, keeping Martin away from getting his two points, the referee.
So stalemate may go ahead.
We have about 28 seconds left to go here.
There's Herman Coliseum where Iowa meets Iowa State here for the fourth time on a dual meet this year.
They met twice at the national team championships.
Now, Martin, in quickly on the opposite leg.
This time he has the right leg, a sponsor now.
But again, sponsor has a good Whizzer and over here on the arm and he was able to help out.
So we are 9 seconds away from the end of the first period.
Referee Pete Jarred sends him back to the center again.
The bell.
Martin has been known to start out slow in his career and he started out a little slow today.
Start to pick it up, making a few more shots here.
But it's 2 to 1 in favor of sponsor.
Sponsor.
He gets his choice.
His official says defer.
His coach says defer.
There's Terry Bradshaw will be up next at £126 against against Dan Knight.
That should be a good match.
But brands just turned, as they say, in Oklahoma.
Kendall Cross everywhere but lose right turn him lose enough times to take him down about 13 times nine times in the last in the last period to get that technical fall over.
Kendall Cross Martin took the down position right in time, just 25 seconds in building for sponsor.
Sponsor needs to take it like that now.
Need to take control of this situation.
He needs to take advantage of the fact and break down Steve Martin.
He's up again on a high.
You know, he's watching for that.
Gramley Right there.
Yeah.
Stay right there.
And he follows through on four.
Stayed right with him.
Nice ride so far by sponsor.
He has 53 seconds of riding time and the crowd is in it now.
And it's very important, Doug, as we talk, very important, that Iowa State at home can get their crowd into this match, bring them to a point where they can get some extraordinary performances because of the crowd.
It's what happens in front of big crowds.
Unusual things can happen.
They need that kind of excitement here in Hilton, Iowa, as we say, last week didn't win against either Arizona State or Oklahoma State, but still came away from the meet from the weekend feeling that they had a chance to win the national title.
They certainly had to feel good about the performances right here.
Moncler allows Martin to turn in, but he still has riding time heat.
George is not giving up the escape.
They're a very hit no minute six for writing Time for chaos sponsors like Chris that brand now now the important thing for the Iowa state referee here is to go right back in on the shot, do what was working for him early, get in on the legs.
Don't let Steve Martin do what he almost did right there and he's going to do.
Chandler leaped out of bounds and then turned back in.
So the escape, this is the takedown is not there.
Well, good heads up movement there, both by Steve Martin.
Drop it on the single leg, but by sponsors to know where he was.
Get that whizzer in, keep him from getting the two points against him.
That's Dan night He'll be up for Iowa State at 126.
Next off, Martin is cut off in his attempt for an outside single.
But Martin was the aggressor here in the last minute or so.
Yeah, it's important what happens here had to do.
He had at least make a an offensive move of some consequence.
Again, Martin on the outside single against the wizard.
Well, I think more than that Doug I don't think he can just kill sponsor can get away with just making shots right now.
He needs to be the aggressor to win this match.
And he is out with 13 seconds left to go in the second period.
That's Jim Gibbons.
No, look now, Martin again, sponsor at £118.
Now, the head sponsor had a takedown early in the first period, a nice Kelly move.
Now there goes Martin to the other side.
But he did not get the takedown.
It's clear at the end of the second period and sponsor will be on the bottom.
Now it's going to be interesting to see where if shake comes into this last period right here, the Shape of Kale sponsor in the shape of Steve Martin.
It's a very close match right here and it's important for both of them.
Sponsor has the advantage here of being on the bottom.
If he can get out quick, he'll have a32 lead.
He needs to get out inside about 5 seconds so he can keep his riding time.
That's the Iowa State wrestler sponsor starting on the bottom.
Needs to have a quick skate here.
It's two, two minute, three minute to minute, one a riding time.
There's a roll by sponsor.
He's out.
He has less than a minute of riding advantage now.
58 seconds.
It's 3 to 2 sponsored.
He got dinged there on the side.
I think his knee got here, hit just like on a crazy bone type situation there.
Just got hit in the wrong place.
Right here.
Sponsor coming out, does a little rope, has the wrist right there, is able to clear his hips, turn in for the one point escape good hip action by Cale sponsor.
There was a very important escape It happened inside 8 seconds and as so often happens we go back to the feet and the match gets settled up here a minute.
47 seconds to go.
We're just started.
If you tuned in, it's Iowa and Iowa State from Hilton Coliseum.
We're at £118.
The only takedown in this match has been scored by Cale, sponsor of Iowa State.
Early in the first period.
Martin has not taken him down.
Well, a takedown is going to decide this, but it's not going to be the one that had it.
There is going to be another takedown in this match right here.
Doug, go.
And it just depends on who wants it worse right here and who's it in shape to get it over.
MARTIN In the Underhook position, he was trying to go across to the other side of the leg, and now he's he's working very well from the top.
And again.
Martin What he got away at five four.
It needs to get going right here.
You know, he needs to take it.
Martin is being the aggressor right now, but sponsor can't sit on this.
He has a good thing going for Iowa State.
Martin in on the leg.
And he's just about to get a takedown here in less conflict with the right move out.
Nothing, no score and take out of the gate.
He didn't call it a takedown in this game.
It was two and one, two points for Martin, 1.4 spun to takedown.
And there's another takedown for Martin.
It's go back to center, guys.
So he did score it.
Sometimes in situations like that, an official will say he doesn't have the takedown to let it go all the way through.
But now it is 6 to 4 in favor of Martin over sponsor.
And here comes Jim.
Give it to the track is back where he had the control that he came out of it He on he didn't start to right time there so he gets pretty much second place is here.
Okay we know you got us three more.
Okay.
Let's go, guys.
Now, here's a replay and here's Steve Martin in on the takedown, but not quite yet.
Now he gets into a body lock, he drops down.
And you're right, Here is where the referee says he has control.
I think it's questionable.
You could go either way right there.
And Jim Gibbons, of course, says that it was a roll through by sponsor and there wasn't a time where Martin had control.
And I think he has a point.
6 to 4 in favor of.
Martin.
No response there.
MARTIN By two, he's coming from behind.
In the third period, he was sponsor, led 2 to 1 At the end of the first period, it was two, two at the end of the second.
We have 41 seconds to go.
MARTIN On top with a two point lead.
Carson Green late on it out.
Watch his caution against what he says.
GREEN He's wearing that green on his wrist, and that's where the Iowa man will start.
So Iowa is green for an official purpose when he says that caution against Martin Carson, another one when he moved his hand off the elbow before the whistle, no third was a point guard.
Third time is, as the referee said.
That's a point.
Okay, hold it.
You get two cautions.
I'll be a little more careful now out he gets another one and up comes sponsor five important and he controls the hands right here as he comes up, he needs to control those hands and not let Martin get him back down.
Out of position on the mat.
Right here is a bad position now because Martin's going to try to load him up a little bit here and kind of crab riding.
And Martin is handling himself very well in this third period.
He's been more active than sponsor.
He was able to turn it on.
Doug Bob, they're trying to roll.
He's trying to get MARTIN Adam as an escape, a dangerous situation there.
But all it was was an escape, six five with 3 seconds to go.
Martin is in on the leg and there it ends.
A tough one point victory for Steve Martin of Iowa, 6 to 5 and that yeah, well, that was a good come from behind victory for Steve Martin in a valiant effort for the freshman fun sponsor, He just ran out of steam a little too soon.
Doug Martin wins again with a 4 to 3 victory in the last period.
That's how he did it.
He got two takedowns in the last period set.
Last flurry, almost catches Martin on his back right here as he turns in right here.
Very important hip action almost gets him.
But Martin's able to pull him down over comes out for the one point escape, sponsored it.
Now this is the reaction the Dan Gable Mark Johnson made right at the end.
You can see they were very worried you would rather be out there than watch it victory.
So it's Iowa three and Iowa State nothing after 118.
Now here's a match we're looking forward to at 126 between Dan Night and Jerry Brown Rams looks terrific against Oklahoma State's Kendall Coffey beat him and a technical foul.
Dan Knight, on the other hand, has won six matches in a row.
They look terrific against Michigan.
This in all last week against his Michigan opponent.
There's a leg shot by Dan Knight.
So it's night against Terry Brand number seven night against number four brands although I can't imagine right next time out who would be higher ranked than brands if he wins here.
Brand got a finger in the finger injury, shakes it off and goes back to the center.
It's going to take more than that.
Stop him.
Knight in the red from Iowa State at Hilton Coliseum and transition on the left and the cradle almost locked up.
That's soft.
Doesn't have a takedown takedown.
A terrific, terrific job so far by Dan Knight with an early what a flurry.
Great flurry by both wrestlers.
I was impressed with Kerry brands going for that cradle where he did.
And I was very impressed with Dan Knight fighting his way out.
Full stop, good flurry.
These are these are too real.
These are definitely all-American candidates here.
I would say after what we've seen this year, Knight has steadily improved through the season.
Looks comfortable with 126 brands, has been tough all year.
Now has reached that dominance.
Great class, the top two or three people.
Well, what Ben Knight needs to do here is keep Terry Branson controlling his head so much.
He has to keep, you know, control the ties himself and not let Terry Brands control his head.
Don't say so that he can snap him down, spin around things like that.
Doug, easier said than done, as you both know.
Right.
But that is the key and I know that.
But Dan Knight's been coached well for this match in on the leg.
That's brands.
What can he do?
Can he finish this Knight there he comes out again balanced Very nice, very good hip action.
You know confidence is a big factor for day and night.
My sake.
There's Gene Knight, Dan Knight's dad right there encouraging his son on confidence is a key factor here for Knight because he has some tremendous throws, upper body throws that if he just feels it and goes with it yet, he can really make it go against anyone.
Oh, we saw him pin the Michigan man with a throw in the first period.
Terry Brands keeping the pressure on keeping the pressure on.
But you see Dan Knight going straight back but moving to the side, not letting himself be driven straight back.
This is the kind of match that Dan Night wants right now, a slower match as far as scoring.
Don't get a lot of scoring going on right now.
It's going to be it's zero zero after the first 2 minutes.
There's a warning against Scott Knight, a warning against Knight Featured says he's too inactive in that situation.
Now Brandes is in solidly on an outside single Oh oh right here Dan Knight's trying to pick that hand off is off his knee.
It's called hand control situation He's in right there gives up to take him.
There's the takedown for Brad.
He just keeps coming.
It just keeps coming at you.
And he goes ahead two to nothing over his Iowa State opponent, Dan Knight.
Here's Terry Branson on the leg and then he covers the hips, drives through now just completes kind of a double leg at the end there.
He started with the single completed by covering the hits for two points.
So now it's two nothing here.
Iowa leads Iowa State three, nothing.
After a one point decision by Steve Martin at 118 over Cale sponsor, We're at Hilton Coliseum Knight riding against a very tough man on top.
Very tough times are always tough on Tyler.
He's just done a nice job because Dan Knight had the hands cleared there.
He was controlling more there.
Steve Knight, Dan's brother, who was an all-American at Iowa State a couple of years ago, yelling for his brother there.
And he wants him to get out now.
26 seconds left in the first period.
Okay?
Yeah.
Oh, referee Pete Jarvis sets them up where they go.
Brandes took away the first move.
He wrestles with lots of power.
Has a tight waist.
There's a roll, by the way, versus the bigger goal.
So right there, you know, that tells you a little something about where Dan Knight is.
He wants a big match out of himself.
And right now, that's all that matters.
Right here is what he thinks about himself.
And here he goes.
He set it up.
Okay.
Kind of takes an inside raw hook.
The elbow came through on top for 2.0.
That worked about as well as he could have hoped.
And he's hoping right now to write out Terry Brand, stay behind the arm.
He's not going to get it done.
But Knight had the reason.
I think Knight got a little bit on the way down, but he came out of there with the loss of one point rather than two, and it's 3 to 2 in favor of brands.
At the end of a wild first period, two great Iowa natives, Iowa High School products.
Here's that last action right here who Kerry Brands is entitled.
And Knight did a nice job of keeping it from being a two point takedown.
He was able to change his position in midair That time.
Brands starts on the bottom.
Good match.
We've got a couple of good matchups we really have, and we've traded to brands with Knight riding on top.
The riding time is almost negligible here for brands and counting down as time ticks away.
Terry Brands, who has beaten his major opponents this year at £126, reaching back for a whizzer.
But Knight's too far back now.
Here's where position comes in and Dan Knight needs to keep good position right here so he doesn't get thrown down.
Pete George, Dan Knight, a four time state champion out of Clinton, Iowa.
Terry Brandes, a two time state champion out of Sheldon, Iowa, 68 championships here a minute, 25 to go in the second period, three, two brands.
But brands is on the underside here, and Knight almost rests on his back.
But Ranch was able to shake out of there and come free.
He's down he's ahead now fortitude and on the attack Knight got caught out I think with his attention on just a little bit I think something happened to Dan Knight.
Something happened on his hip and that happened before that last takedown right there.
And his hip kind of kind of came out of place or something right there.
That's unfortunate that that injury happened right there because right here he's diving away.
But I think the injury happened right before this.
And this is Terry Brand's coming through single leg on top for a takedown.
You could see what's on his mind.
He wants to start back on his feet while Brandes works very quickly.
Coming back from a move like that, an escape, it's often easy for a man to let.
His attention is concentration sink.
Just for a moment there.
That didn't happen with Brandes.
He has now leaped up 622 lead.
He has 19 seconds of riding time belong to Knight.
As we go back to the center Knight and Brands, let me think Tough first period brands has two takedowns.
Knight managed to reverse them in the first period.
Now those brands dropping down on a single leg.
He set that up with a little head action controlled.
The head dropped down to that single leg, give it up, hit a better guy.
And there we go.
Big takedown for brands.
And here we look at the three after the escape and back, you come to the center with a score 8 to 4.
After the escape, Terry Brands will be ranked probably higher than fourth, first down.
Well, this is not how he wrestled Kim across last week.
And he just controls that head stuff ahead and just runs around.
Tired brands beginning to dominate here in the second period with 28 seconds to go.
Knight Han with him really well in the first period but has let it slip a little bit here now in the second and there it's 12 to 5.
All right.
I think right here on the edge of the mat, the referee's going to have to start watching Terry Brands.
I think he's a little rough on the edge of the mat when they are out of bounds.
Dog.
I think the wrestling needs to go on in the center of the mat Nice job by Terry Brands here clearing the arms and the head driving in for two and now they're off the mat.
30 seconds left an injury down Knight having trouble with the hip down Terry Brands is getting so good at so many things Doug he's able to control the head spin around clear the head drop in four doubles in singles He's got it going for him and at the right time going into the Big Ten's in the NCAA brands leads 12 to 5.
He's had four takedowns here in a row in the second period.
So what was a very tight match turned around at a monumental quick hurry.
Left leg time in brands riding very hard, tough on top.
That's it.
Knight is out 12 six plus one and that's the time remaining in the second period.
But Brands has just has to see that snap down right there.
Doug Nothing there at the end but again, Knight called four time clearly having a serious problem.
He really is having a problem here.
Okay, stop it.
Tonight.
He looks like he's a left.
Okay, let's go, guys.
He actually looks a little dazed.
Yeah, look, his eyes look funny.
Look, he woke up last night.
All right, you're up now.
What's happening?
Who's going to be who's in what position?
This is the third period.
Okay, We went down, park minutes, read, takes down to heart.
Knight starts on the bottom, trailing 12 six.
Very likely that Brands will let him up.
Okay, hold your position.
Go for takedowns again.
Come on then.
You got it.
Shows you how much I know Franz is going to ride in a while.
Doesn't have riding time, but maybe he can get it.
Come on, Denny, Look at you're out.
Get those inside.
Grabs has 27 seconds of riding time.
Well, he's working the near respiratory brands.
He's working the wrist, trying to get the arm in the back so he can set some pinning combinations.
He wants to put Dan Knight on his back.
Very tough wrestler, Terry Bragg Center.
He leads by six Get 40 to Jim Zaleski, Mark Johnson, just lead.
And you see Barry Davis there in the background on the other side and Gable Oh, yes.
Now, Dan Knight, okay, hold us undefeated this year at 126 coming into this match, even one right there's the left let up 12 to 7 and a three takedown again for brands even let me 14 date after the second escape and this period you don't seem there's Marino getting ready at 134 for Iowa State you don't see many more dominating wrestlers than than Terry brands at 126 this year again on a single leg goes 100 down and makes the takedown.
What's up?
Yeah, 16 to 8.
It's now major decision.
This is enough for a major decision.
So less than a minute to go, but still, just about a minute that goes on the cross signal that right they're going to cast over here to try to get two points and look for the back points.
He's going to look for the back points right here.
After all, to really dig out.
Look, he's got the leg lace right here and he's looking to turn Dan Knight up and able to kick out that up.
And you got to remember this.
You know, last week he was great.
Terry Brands was doing the same thing to the defending national champion.
Exact same thing.
And there's another one.
Tom Brands will be ready at 134.
Terry Brands of Sheldon, Iowa, come up here he comes again.
And that's 2210.
Yeah.
I'm not sure he has enough time for it to work up a technical fall.
I'm sure he does.
In it's ten point lead now.
Nine point lead would be it after the escape makes it 20 to 11.
But Terry Brands has picked up one takedown in the first period, four in the second and four in the third.
And he keeps coming at you single leg again.
That was outright single, executed perfectly to the point where the opponent was in.
Ben Knight dropped to the ground and he got enough riding time during those exchanges to go ahead.
23 to 11.
It's a major decision that ten takedowns in that match.
Terry Brands And so it's seven for Iowa and zero for the Cyclones after two matches.
Terry Brands I don't know if I'd want to bet against him even if came across as hard because he's he's gotten awfully tough lately.
He's really come in on Terry Brands and he's really making his mark in this get ready for this national tournament.
And there's a courageous young man, Dan Knight.
Physically, he looks like he's hurting a little bit.
And he just went through a big battle.
He lost this battle.
But there's others in front of him.
Doug, there's Mike Marino, £134.
We didn't see him the last time out Iowa State against Michigan.
He had been bumped pretty hard and had maybe a little concussion against against Penn State.
And the coaches held him out.
But Marino's ready to go here against Tom Brandes.
That's our Tom branch as he wants to tie up once again in close control.
Marino and Marino is staying away from it, but you can't do that forever.
The reputation of the brands precedes them, you know, when they're on the out of bounds and lots of people want to get into that shoving on the out of bounds.
So they some of them do it themselves against us and it.
Tom Brandes controlling the head and going for the heel pick.
He just kept coming until the referee blew the whistle.
Brandes has lost one time this year, lost to a redshirt year.
Freshman from Oklahoma State freed Alan Freed early, early in the season.
Nobody else has beaten has established himself as the top 134 pounder in the nation as his brother.
After the victory, Terry Brandes chose Vig, who's waiting for his turn.
Marino of Iowa State last year finished third in the Big eight in his freshman year.
But there's a warning against Marino right on the line for being a little bit maybe to fleet of foot there.
Tom Brandes against Mike Marino two Iowa product small towns brands from Shell and Mike Marino from Glenwood and Branson being very aggressive on course that was the official talking to brands about Dunne not pushing no single leg offside and now there Tom Brady does a nice job of turning that in, elevate him to coming around the turn to single and do a double, then changed his position and came out with a takedown.
That's the first takedown for Brand two zero Carlsbad so had a takedown for Iowa State early in the £118 match and the Cyclones have been able to get one since.
I will lead seven to nothing here at £134, one rib.
Marino is up 2 to 1 at 134.
Lots of wrestling yet ahead between Iowa and Iowa State.
Brandes is in behind if he can take Marino to the mat as he is right it's harder line go back center.
The brands are good news for Iowa Hawkeye fans and for Dan Gable 126 at 134.
Tom finished fourth in the Nationals last year.
He's ranked number one this year.
I it currently he was the outstanding freshman of the year in the Big Ten meet last year outstanding wrestler and freshman of the year for the big Ten Tom Brandes 422 after the escape and in goes Bram's on the leg again he's going to draw Reno on the back of the mat and then take him down three takedowns for brains six two.
That's at £142.
There you see some of the people here at Hilton Coliseum.
A lot of Iowa fans here, too, as you might expect, at 142, it'll be Rob Wall out of Iowa State against Troy Steiner coming in seventh ranked for the Hawkeyes.
It'll be a rematch from earlier in the year.
The end of the first period ends this up here.
Tom Brandes has a takedown not quite because they're on the edge of the mat, pulls Marino back on and now drops down and covers the hips.
Watch right there.
Drives in for the two point takedown that's called want and doing something about it.
Mike Marino goes to the down position.
It was his choice.
There he is.
They hold it won a state championship his senior year place, two other years in the high school tournament.
We'll be bringing you the high school tournament next week.
The 1990 edition six to Brandes seven Nothing Iowa that's Jim Gibbons this Iowa stage coach Les Anderson assistant on the left of your screen, Dan Gable with a broken left hand handed off covering for Iowa Move even one ran escape.
I know that some go mano grand with Marino Golan comes right back at him again.
Oh, see how close he's staying to the hips right there.
He's driving now.
He cuts across, gets the ankle from the other side right through for the takedown.
Did a nice job.
Tom Brands of staying close to the hip, cutting across, getting the ankle on the far side and driving through the hip.
8 to 3.
That's Randy Lewis Olympic champion in 1984.
Now the head of the Hawkeye Wrestling Club, four time all-American for the Hawkeyes.
In the late seventies and early eighties, Brand starting on top leads by five.
Got to ride for a while.
Let's see what his time advantage is.
He has a minute and 15 writing time and he's counting, piling it up from there.
Even 1824 after the escape drives in for a low high crotch comes around and covers for the two points.
It was just as easy as dropping back in Nice Drive and Tom Brand's you'd like to get Marino on his on his back here 10 to 4 score here only on lots of riding time and now Branson is wearing Hardy these Branson twins wear their opponents down keep going in the second period you know we have still 45 seconds to go here in the second period.
Yeah.
They just start getting their steam going here in this second period.
And then that third period's usually all there's good effect.
I don't know of anybody that's had the advantage in the third period against a bad one ran ten five after the escape and again Brandes just drops in after escape.
You know, we've talked about this a lot, but that's the best opportunity to get a takedown.
There's Troy Steiner, who will be up next at 142 for Iowa, saw him in a of a match with Chuck Barbee of Oklahoma State last week, which he lost by one point.
You know you're talking about it doesn't that there goes Tom Branson.
There's 2.23.
Take it doesn't matter whether you're getting the escape or giving the escape the best opportunity to get a takedown.
Doug, is immediately after points are scored like an escape with Jim Gibbons.
He knows that he wants Marino to get in there, but Tom Brandes is dictating this match.
Iowa has already won a very close decision at 118 and a major decision at 126.
That's how much time is left up there in the center of your screen.
In the second period, 12 to 5 in favor of brands.
He's going to let this period go all the way out on top 12 by eight.
This guy out.
Well, this is our final meet in the college wrestling series.
But that's what we have for you next Saturday, starting at 630, the high school wrestling championships live with opening ceremonies in the Grand March Veterans Auditorium and then the wrestling all the way through to the last match.
Hope you can join me.
Brands is out now leads by major decisi starting line Let's go very much a dominant wrestler and he has an eight point lead.
He had three takedowns in the first period and three in the second.
That Marino has been warned earlier.
That was before a point was scored.
Marino was warned for backing off.
Marino made that shot from the outside.
He was momentarily caught underneath and then there goes the single leg again.
And there he goes, getting in that position, getting his hips underneath him.
And now he's going to Tom Brandes is going to turn in drive across.
Now he's going to try to cut off to a double leg right here, see his arm go across.
He's looking to cut across.
He cuts across really with his knee there, covers it up.
And now he's just going to have to drive through for the two points.
It's just a matter of time right here, degree.
There it is now for eight and that makes it 15 to 5.
He goes right in with the near rest, looking to come around and top, getting his arm behind him, trying to drive Marino over to his back.
Bad angle on the arm, according to Pete George, he's not going to let that one continue.
So we go back to the center.
Brandes on top.
He leads 15 to 5.
He's had seven takedowns.
Did it?
Did it look like Terry Branstad hurt his shoulder in that last match?
I didn't see it.
Even though he I don't think they let injuries bother him very much.
Doug, the Brands twins, the Escape made it 15 to 6 and now Brandes is in again on the single way takedown 17 to 6.
And with 30 seconds to go put it back, we have an 11 point lead for brands.
Maybe again, not quite possible to get the technical fall.
12 points, though, with the writing time on that 917 to 7 in favor of brands of Iowa to.
Oh, that was an interesting exchange right there.
What happened there is Tom Brandes was trying to pull Marino back on.
Marino used his other free leg and was able to kick the hands off and get out.
Tom Brandes didn't like that and drove into him, right.
One last picked out a try here by Brand and Dan Gable was up looking for a back pass.
That's one point short of the technical ball.
Well, it's 22 points short, 20 to 7 with riding time.
And it's a major decision for Tom Brandes over Mike Marino.
And that makes Iowa's lead 11 now after three matches.
Let's see that last little out of bounds that you were talking about, T.J., right here.
You see there's the kick by Marino and there's the push by Tom.
And it was just a one of those things right there.
You know, so far after three matches, an indicator of what's going on is that Iowa has 21 takedowns and Iowa State one Iowa State had the first takedown in the meet the whole only 21 straight Bauer at 142 Rob White for Iowa State against Troy Steiner of Iowa ranked seventh what Steiner lost in his last match to Chuck Barbee 3 to 2 on a takedown in the last period down at Stillwater.
Well, I don't you know, we talk about moral victories and things, but that was close to one, because he certainly wasn't the favorite against Barbee.
And it came down to the last few seconds in a flurry there.
And he almost won that match against Barbee from Oklahoma State on the state home.
That was a nice high crotch move on the far side by STEINER Well, something what wants to do is score because he has failed to score in his outings against Troy Steiner this year and Steiner again inside for a takedown.
He started that with a high crotch move.
They've met twice now, and Steiner won five oh the first time and in nine The second time over what, Rob?
What?
Which means that what hasn't been able to escape from him.
Steiner has written him with those legs.
And that's what Steiner likes to do.
He likes to use his legs.
He likes to stay on top.
He's not much on the on the feet as much as he likes to be on the mat, working the near risk right here, looking for ways to turn.
Rob what to his back here, out of bounds.
There's Harold Nichols and his wife.
Good to see the opposition.
Two old friends of wrestling there on the mat side, Milton Coliseum for this Iowa Iowa State meet.
Iowa leads 11 to nothing after three matches, one regular decision at 118, and then two majors from the brands try Steiner leads to two.
Nothing here over what style and rides toughie why has not, as we said, been able to escape from him this year and two previous meetings just go center.
Steiner is a redshirt freshman and so is what Steiner is able with that near wrist attack there has been keeping Rob lock down flat on the mat, not able and Rob not being able to get in good position so that he can escape with a stand up or sit out.
He's just not able to get into that position.
He's dominant on top, T.J..
Troy Steiner, you back with Tim Johnson.
I'm Doug Brown from Hilton Coliseum, the home of the Iowa State Cyclones, who trail 11 to nothing after three matches.
We're at 142.
Steiner needs to do nothing.
There is one of his best situations.
Put the legs in and right now he he's continuing to keep watch flat.
Okay, we have 30 seconds to go in the first here.
And there's a warning against what was going for inactivity on the bottom, where Steiner has really had his number in this position and the Steiners wrestling like he has a twin brother, Terry, who's also on the team backup to striker at 150, but who saw action last week at Oklahoma State.
And they both like those legs.
From North Dakota, Bismarck Century High School.
From Bismarck, North Dakota, Troy Steiner won his last 104 matches in high school.
Okay, hold it.
Current.
Bravo.
At the home counter from Ames Steiner with a half.
Nelson calls him again.
He wrote him out the first period after taking him down fairly early on.
He has 2 minutes and 26 seconds of fighting time already and takes Steiner takes down.
So what goes in transition?
All right.
The waste in the shop Steiner has the hands control, but he comes to his feet.
So from there on, it was easy to get out.
And you said it.
Well, Doug, he controlled the hands.
Troy Steiner Daddy controlled them and was able to just walk out of that for a one point escape.
Now he's working on a two on one situation against what little review here, by the way, that Steve Martin had a tough match with chaos Bonds third one at 6 to 5.
He came from behind in the last period.
Then Terry Brandes had a major decision over Dan Knight, 23 to 11 and Tom Brandes a major decision of right on a nice 2 seconds.
Second.
Steiner Step through really nicely, work ahead step through and got the two going Take down a very nicely executed five nothing well the way things started for Iowa State with that first takedown there was a little feeling in the crowd that maybe this might be one of those down days for Iowa against the Cyclones.
But after Martin managed to rally the win, the brands have put on some dominant exhibitions here.
And Troy Steiner has now begun to put it to Rob Watt in a big way.
Five Nothing tough right now, but Rob, what there needs to get some explosion right off the whistle back in, you know, his body back into Troy Steiner's and get him off balance a little bit and start with a one point escape.
You know, I was wondering when that would happen.
Yeah.
Going from his feet right there.
And that's not the way Rob White wanted to score his point.
But it's this time he gets a chance on his feet.
And Steiner couldn't quite reach the leg that time.
I couldn't believe he was where he was great.
Troy Steiner, you know, destroyed his position just in a split second by hip and out and countering and was able to turn around for a two point takedown, traded it for an escape.
Now, 7 to 2, Steiner draws in a leg, goes to the double leg under the arm, and he's ahead 9 to 2.
Yeah, skillfully done by Troy Steiner, the freshman lot of an escape from North Dakota.
He has more than 3 minutes of riding time to.
Well, he certainly likes it on top, but he's also shown us what he can do on his feet.
There's the end of the period if Steve Hamel, he got hurt, as you know, down at Oklahoma Choice.
And it's questionable whether he'll wrestle tonight or today or not.
But Red takes neutral.
Well, I just kind of have the feeling we're going to see he's just that kind of guy.
He's tough.
He wants to be in there.
But Coach Gibbons, of course, is concerned about him being healthy for the big eight in the NCAA.
And that'll be it because it's coach's decision, as we know he does have he has every chance of winning a national title out of either state.
I haven't seen anybody better at 158 all year, but Steiner with a front headlock for a moment now he comes around to greet Roll again.
He controlled that head and then he came around and got the ah, got the legs.
Turn that into to go 11 to 2, 11 to 3.
After the escape, a major decision already for Steiner, the third period here over Rob Lance, Iowa leads 11 to nothing.
We're in the fourth match of ten.
It kind of hung up in there in the uniform.
You notice it when they're on your feet.
You see Iowa coming from the center pushing to the outside.
And we've seen Iowa State on the outside.
And Iowa certainly has been the aggressive dog to watch.
Again, he shot over to the far side by Steiner, controls the leg.
He'll come around to Green, has another takedown.
He's piled up six of them, even wondering if he 13 the four after the escape, a nine point lead for Steiner 30 seconds to go.
But yeah, the Hawks 11 Iowa State nothing after 134 and the Hawks lead here at 142.
What took a shot?
Yeah, that was his most thorough shot.
Just as you said earlier, his position destroyed by Steiner's counter, and it's now 15 to 4.
But the league top man, Steiner has three more than three and a half minutes of riding time.
A major decision with riding 9622 for three, a major decision seven takedowns in that match for Troy Steiner and the Hawks go up 15 to nothing after 142.
And a reminder to the intermission tonight, after the £150 match, what you're going to watch in a moment, Iowa Public Television will present its annual traditional college wrestling memories feature a musical montage of wrestling people and events we've had this year.
A salute to the sport fans and participants.
And we'll also give you an address to write with your comments, suggestions and criticisms of our College wrestling series coverage this year.
I'll have that intermission.
Now it's Striker against Jackson at £150.
Thanks again, guys.
Doug Striker is ranked sixth.
He lost it last week at the chest from Oklahoma State for Jackson this is a tough, talented youngster for Iowa State.
He got in quickly on a double leg.
Well, you know what that reminded me of?
The double legs of his brother, Kevin Jackson.
And I'm sure he gets enough work in the room with Kevin Jackson.
But it was a beautifully executed double leg and John Striker countering very, very well.
Does he have the reversal yet?
George says no, not yet.
It's quite a scramble here.
And Corey Jackson does not want to end up on his back.
And this flurry of concern is their support.
Dominic a nice recovery by striker and it's two two reversal good flurry to start 150.
It was exciting.
It was an excellent double leg.
They'd gone drought 28 straight they'd gone drought 28 straight takedowns against them since their last takedown Iowa State That was a big takedown for Torrey Jackson and a big reversal for striker Riley, making the score 2 to 2.
That striker is an eye on the thigh.
Yes, he is a good mat wrestler dog, and he's high on that thigh right there.
And he he likes to wrestle on the mat.
He wants to have to lead on, bring it out, wants to hoist Jackson over on his back, out of bounds.
Q2 Now, here's the takedown.
Watch drives into a double leg, improves his position and drives right through a little trip right there.
Went through his man.
Nice job.
And this is the reversal.
That's how the reversal finally ended.
The score was made 2 to 2 at that point.
Striker and Jackson Striker is on top.
Oh, boy.
We're in the first period at £150.
Iowa and Iowa State from Hilton Coliseum.
The Hawks lead 15 to nothing.
Striker has been controlling a top four forward back striker sophomore from Starboard High School hometown in Arlington, Iowa.
He's got an arm bar looking for the other side, but far west right now.
He's got the wrist and arm and he's going to look for some turns right now.
Doug Striker is from Iowa.
He's he's looking to turn to Jackson.
I go the other way.
That's nice.
Slick move there.
But Jackson's pressure the other way and then try to tilt in the opposite direction.
Now, Troy Jackson's able to tap over here out of.
Yeah, quite as good reaction by Corey Jackson right there not to be turned and almost turn it into an escape.
Well, provided they stay at the same weight over the years.
I think these two are going to have some good matches this year and years to come.
They both have talent coming.
Both have quite a lot of heart.
Jackson turns in.
But the only thing hold on, Striker is able to hold on to that ankle and turn it and be able to stay on top of the two to avoid a two point reversal striker on top brings Jackson over, but he doesn't have Near-Fall points yet.
He doesn't have his back to the mat.
There's the end of the second of the first period.
Two.
Well, that was really tough.
Tough.
There's Furlong, who was a national champion Iowa State in 1965.
He's part of the 1965 Iowa State teams return.
You see all the fellows with the red carnations.
Well, those are the members of that 1965 team for you.
You could look around there and spot a few names these down not all that year right now, but for instance, Vic Marcus, he's up there covering how good he was a national champion.
Later, Gordon Haslam up there was the national champion.
Here we see Torrie Jackson on top after a good first period for both wrestlers.
Now you see Striker looking back there for kind of a Granby judge situation.
He'd like to get both the leg and a wrist.
There you see, grabbed for the wrist.
There.
She's got a rate.
In the meantime he's a racing riding tiger Bailey Jackson is he was written for almost a middle toe in the first period and striker okay hold it cover it is now on the underside.
Doug Striker has come a long way for Iowa from when he first started in the program few years ago.
He's really improved even when Jackson lets striker go.
Now here's where we see Corey Jackson at his best on his feet and Iowa State hoping for him to come through for another takedown on the angle right here.
He's a pull at the end to cut across to a double leg right here now, right there now needs to cut across with double right there and drive there needs to continue pressure in the end and not let the striker turn the corner.
There needs to keep keep strikers hips on the mat.
Now there's the drive, double cross right here.
There is the takedown.
Corey Jackson did what he needed to do.
Good, deliberate execution for the Iowa wrestler as well.
Obviously a talented young wrestler.
You see Striker switching went the other way.
Turns in now here, right?
Right here.
Look at Striker backing on that leg right there.
Good job by Striker.
They're turning that around The official on that score this until his nose whether it's a reversal or escape their eyes at the end of the match escape for four now 37 seconds to go second period a good match down by Jackson against Striker right now Jackson has had the only takedowns and there's where Jackson likes to be in that outside.
No tie up, double leg shots underneath.
Well, you can tell where both wrestlers are, by the way.
They come back to the mat to the middle of the mat right now.
That's Can I get back there?
There's Kevin Jackson.
What an excellent wrestler both like you in Iowa State.
But you notice Doug Striker's back in the middle of the mat ready to wrestle.
It's taken Torrie Jackson a little bit longer to get back to the center that says he's tired.
It's four four here in the second period.
Third period, Jackson will start in the up in the down position Striker wants to come in tie up with three wasn't able to do it.
Now the question here is can Jackson get away from striker It takes neutral.
Well, he's not even going to try.
I think that's a good decision by Torrie Jackson because we talked about what a good mat wrestler striker is.
He didn't want to get caught underneath, didn't want to give up right in time.
And whereas he scored his four points on the feet with two takedowns.
So it's more for the and Jackson went under wasn't able to reach Striker Striker has the front headlock got a post to head right up and spin around but Jackson was able to control it in the yard.
So let's go back to the middle after the game after the stalemate call for four.
Iowa 15.
Iowa State nothing there's on that.
Yes it's a great call.
Let's go.
George Torrey.
Jackson's coming back to the center, very lethargic ball.
And then when they were ready to start the match, he didn't have his head up, ready to go again, his shot from way out didn't reach Striker who has the front headlock now right here.
Look at now Jackson.
If he's quick, he can come around and he wasn't quite able to turn that corner.
Now Striker wanted to tie up though and he did by merit.
Jackson has been warm.
Jackson has been warned he needs to get back in there and then at 18 to go lots of time he George doesn't want to get in a situation where he's going to decide the match.
There's a spin around by Jackson good counter, however, by striker, and he stayed in the position center.
Excellent counter.
There's a good flurry.
Now.
Jim Gibbons wants to talk to the official Ft. John warning the coach in this questioning my judgment.
Now, I was talking to him on the ask similar situation and this ball wasn't going came down.
It was the stop motion, the one Jim Gibbons is asking about, the similarity between 118 here it is warning against the team now.
Did he have a takedown right here?
And Pete George says no, that's a good flurry.
Right.
They go back to live action again.
Jackson made shot underneath and striker came up a front headlock position for a time.
We have 50 seconds to go in a tie match Jackson in trouble here because strikers in on the single leg driving right in right to six four in favor of striker now he's got ten points strikers in there tight four with a body lock.
He's got the legs continue He's still got the way near fall three point near fall and it makes it 9 to 4.
The Hawkeyes have been very tough in the third period.
Well, they really haven't dug strikers a very tough wrestler.
And as you guys, you said he's ranked sixth in the nation.
Sorry.
Jackson gave him a good effort but just didn't have enough steam.
Right?
No.
Back here, fall right in time, goes to Iowa and it's 10 to 4 for striker over Torrey Two hands guys And so at the end of the first five weeks it's Iowa.
Well done.
Well, it does go 12 to 20.
It's a major decision.
A major decision makes it 19 to nothing.
Let's look again right here.
He drives through and look at he's got the single now reached up you saw behind the hips drive through for the two points right there.
Now he has the body lock.
He keeps the shoulder.
He is shoulder into the gut of Torrey Jackson right there, covers him, knows where he's at, and gets two more points for back points there.
You saw his shoulders pass, 45 degree angle right there.
Good solid late rally by Doug Striker, sixth ranked at £150 six points in the last several seconds to defeat Torrey Jackson, 12 to 4.
Well, that's the end of the £150 match with Iowa leading 19 to nothing.
And right now, Iowa Public Television would like to present our traditional musical salute to the coaches, wrestlers and fans.
So let's take a look at this season's college wrestling memories.
Oh, okay.
Listen up, everybody.
If you want to take a chance, just get on the phone with the new kid.
Don't worry about it, because it won't take long.
I'm going to put you in a chance with the funky song, but you got to be into it to you.
It off and to I get to wear up.
Oh, oh, oh.
Everybody's always talking about who's on top.
Don't cross off because you're going to get some.
We ain't going to give anybody any slack what's going to come right?
It's time I get to the it's on the got time.
I get to where I'm against everybody because we're going to do our thing.
You know, it ain't so.
The fat lady sings.
Check it out.
Have everybody to.
That feature was produced by Tom McMahon.
The goal of our staff.
A nice work That was really good.
We're at intermission here at Hilton Coliseum with a score Iowa 19 Iowa State nothing.
Well, we certainly hope you've enjoyed our 14th season of college this year and that you'll write to us with your comments.
Maybe you have an idea about how we could do a lot better.
If so, here's the address.
I'll read it right off for you.
College wrestling care Iowa Public Television Box 6450 645.
Old Johnston, Iowa.
The zip code is 50131.
Let's repeat that.
Iowa Public Television Box 6450 Johnston, Iowa 50131.
Glad to hear from you.
We Always are.
And we'll be glad to join you again next Saturday night at Veterans Auditorium.
And here on Iowa Public Television for coverage of the state championships.
The three ring circus.
Oh, yeah.
Well, they're everybody's gone at it.
630 on later in the evening here on Iowa Public Television, we have the Grand March and the awards at 630.
And then they start at it on three maps, three classes of size of school.
And we stay right with you until we get all the way through with every single champion crowned 30, 39 of 39, I believe, all together.
So that's next Saturday night here on Iowa Public Television.
This is Iowa 19, an Iowa state, nothing.
Iowa State got the first take down in the meet.
And if you see, they only have two others, 29 to 3 Iowa takedowns.
The total points, 77 to 31 in favor of the Hawkeyes.
Reversals or even escapes don't mean much because the team that's getting taken down all the time gets escapes.
There falls one for Iowa.
There have been pins.
There have been some major decis seeing the fortunes really change for Iowa State.
You know, the Cyclones started out with sponsor looking good at 218.
He certainly did.
And he had that on.
He had Martin on the line, but just couldn't quite finish the job.
So Steve Martin got Iowa out 6 to 5 and then the brands went to work that night, got bumped up a little bit in there at the hip, and he wasn't feeling his best at 26.
But still, Terry Brands has been doing that to everybody.
Tom Brands won a major over Mike Marano My Merino Steiner won a major decision over Robb What?
Stryker won a major decision over Torrie Jackson and it's now 19 to nothing.
QUESTION T.J., will Steve Hamilton go?
He's going to go.
Well, I think, yeah, warming up.
I think they want to get Iowa State on the score board right now.
And the best way to do it, the best possible way to do it for Iowa State in 1990 is put Steve Hamilton on the map.
Well, he must be feeling quite a little bit better.
Otherwise never really would have put him out there because he has a chance, as everybody knows, to win a national title.
He pulled a muscle at Oklahoma.
There's Keith Trammell will be his opposition.
Trammell is in the lineup because Mark Rylance has a fractured jaw, appears to be out for the year, the eyes out for the air.
Iowa folks have been able to find a protector that will actually work for a aja the way somebody could get one for a broken nose.
So Trammell appears to be the man for the hawks at 158.
He's been tussling for the position with Terry Steiner.
But Hamilton has been an outstanding 158 pounder this year.
Well, he is the key right now of getting Iowa State back into this meet right now and getting the crowd into it.
And that's very important for this home crowd to get a win on the board.
Doug Hamilton lost twice.
One was that default because of Mid-Match.
He had to he had to hang it up.
And that stopped a 21 match winning streak for Steve Hamel.
Bring Steve Hamilton against Keith Trammell.
A couple of Iowans again, travel from Iowa City.
Hamilton is from Emmetsburg and I suppose a lot of people here, it's good to see Steve Hamilton out there wrestling and to know that he's feeling well enough to do it.
Travel in the black for the University of Iowa against the cyclones in Hamilton.
How do you see Trammell picking up the pace?
Hamilton likes to work hard and after he went up for the arm, picked I think for Campbell, it was a real slick move.
And that showed right there that Steve Hamilton is closer to the 100% than a lot of people think.
He's not 100%, there's no doubt about that.
But he was able to slick under Trammell right there for the two point takedown.
You see the wrap on his upper leg.
This is where I believe Steve Hamilton wants to be today, is on top, working the near risk and working his opponent so that he can turn him to his best.
You know, it's only on time.
A real tough arm by Hamilton.
Boy, dangerous position, says Keith George calls him off.
It.
Hamilton apparently has a bloody nose.
Look at this little low, high crotch right there.
Coats off to the double leg, drives through for the takedown.
Two points for Steve Hamilton to start the match.
But they can but you can travel was very strong about working at Hamilton is aggressive and Hamilton countered that aggressiveness travel over and overcommitted himself just a little bit.
Hamilton starts on top caution against him.
He wants to quickly He was covering the way we go even when Green Hamilton let him out to the so we've often said Hamilton likes to get his hands on his opponent's head working there you see him up there look at he dropped now that's exactly that's exactly what Iowa has done.
Well, earlier in the meet with the brands, his work in the head, working the head and dropping it on the lower leg attack.
Hamilton did it very nicely there where he was slapping the head a little bit there and then dropping down for a little skelly action there.
He goes in for a tries for a fireman's carry.
He's working every every angle right now and that's what he does.
So where he turns the corner, creates angles and drops it very nicely.
Trammell's tough.
He's going to stay right in there with that high crotch out of the single corner, one in favor of Hamilton.
You know, so many things can happen from what Steve Hamilton does.
He gets in and he could If the opponent stayed in tidy, complete a fireman's carry, he could complete a high crotch or he can cut a cross to a double from his attack.
And that's it.
I think that's a real key to a to a national contender that you have a variety from your leg attack.
And he definitely has how Trammell almost rolled into a tough half Nelson there but he did complete the role and Hamilton still leads 4 to 1.
Steve Hamilton of Iowa State.
His team trails 19 to nothing as we begin the second set of five matches of the 10th in a college wrestling duel.
22 seconds to go in the first grade at Hilton Coliseum.
Here's the last takedown.
He drops in high crotch, comes around, stays with legs, he stays with the leg, and then he cuts across to a double drives for the two point takedown in Appleton.
But some go with 18 seconds to go figure he can get one more takedown before the end of the period rising again.
High crotch cuts cut sort of a double same thing to point.
You know, what you can say about Steve Hamilton is he's not only good at what he does, he hustles.
He's a hustler all the time looking for every opportunity.
And he'll try and he will You'll ride out gravel till the end of the period all together.
He has a minute and 41 seconds of riding time.
I don't know how much Hamilton has been able to work out this week.
Reid takes down, but it certainly hasn't slowed him kind.
It imagine after a all that he was able to go really hard early in the week.
No, I can't.
But one of the things that impressed me earlier in the year is that when Steve Hamilton's tired, he still goes.
A lot of people quit when they get tired.
HAMILTON He may get tired in this match, but you're going to see him still go there.
He gets in a single leg off that single drop point travel wanted to do what Hamilton often does, even Dipsy do under the bottom, but he wasn't able to pull it off at 8 to 3 after the escape.
Jim Gibbons, Wes Anderson.
They like what they see when they look at Steve Hamilton.
Trammell, who is a city high graduate of Iowa City.
They he wrestled out of Arizona State against Ray Miller.
Boston, a rather nice showing.
That's what we heard.
Nothing.
Take him down again.
Hamilton goes under on that far side single that high crotch which can turn into almost anything depending on what his opponent will give him.
You know, you don't ask for anything more than good hustle and good hard wrestling from your wrestlers.
You know, you're out there recruiting talent, but you get out on the mat, you expect them to go all the way.
Jim Gibbons sees that Steve Hamilton, who leads here 10 to 3, looks for him to be a role model to the rest of the teammates.
You need people like that in the room.
Sometimes things happen.
Doug I've got a young man sitting beside me helping us with stats, but Bobby Thompson, who is the same type of wrestler for Iowa State, even one great real hard worker.
But he went under the knife for an operation here just on the need.
Yeah.
And isn't able to wrestle.
But those are the type of wrestlers coaches are always looking for.
The ones who will get out there and work hard, tough hand fight up there.
They like to control each other.
They both like to control the head.
There was a high crotch move by Trammell, but he is not going to make his work takedown for Hamilton on the counter.
He's still 12 to 4 now with 16 seconds to go in the second period and coliseum, Iowa, 19, Iowa State, nothing through the first five match.
Now five four major decisions.
One regular decision because he knows how there's Bobby Thompson, 167 pounder not able to be in the lineup right now because of that injury and the operation.
But when he's in that lineup, he goes tough and he's looking forward to next year, I'm sure.
Meanwhile, we're at £158 here.
A little bit of time out.
Pete George is coming over to to tell Jim Gibbons not to coach his man in between periods.
He knows either 12 to 4 Hamilton leads.
Hamilton starts on top.
TRAMMELL Okay, hold it on the bottom.
Well, you see Coach Gable's hand there.
We talked about it earlier.
He broke his hand wrestling.
Keith Trammell here is in on a double leg, got his hand caught in the mat, bent back and busted bone this funny, but Trammell's left quite a swath.
Yeah, early travel is hustling hard.
He's really hustling hard.
He's coming at it.
He is a hustler.
He gets in there and almost gets the takedown.
But what kept him from up was Steve Hamilton's reaction and good hip action.
He got the hip out and was able to avoid the takedown back in on his pat crotch drive through, cut double travel.
Seen it before.
This time, he was able to come across the back.
I don't think I really don't think Hamilton is moving quite as fast as he did in the first period.
Bring it up 12 to 5 is the score minute 15 to go here.
That's Jim Gibbons looking at his star, 158 pounder.
It is doubtful whether we would see Steve Hamilton here.
There is a low single by Trammell, but boy, this position got wiped out there.
He didn't travel in good shape.
He's given Hamilton all he can ask for here at this last period.
And Hamilton may not feel just tip top.
No, but he doesn't quit.
He just keeps coming.
He just keeps coming.
But he's not feeling, you know, And 100%, you can tell that he's limping a little bit back there, but he'd like to probably have this match over with right now.
Travel working hard, working hard.
12 to 5.
Hamilton leads with riding time.
Oh, it would give him a major decision for Iowa State that point decision for Steve Hamilton if he was able to keep Keith Trammel from scoring.
Now Hamilton has to counter because Trammell's got on the low single.
We have 20 seconds to go.
If Hamilton can get in a position there, he could counter well and maybe get a takedown himself.
But he does counter well.
He wasn't in action.
They were hoping for a major decision, maybe out of Hamilton.
They're going to they're going to get it with with the right hip, get it right there with the takedown.
14 to 5 right in time goes to Hamilton, 2 minutes and 40 seconds him.
That's an impressive performance by a wrestler who does hurt a little bit in that leg, but probably hasn't been able to work out as much as he'd like this weekend.
It's he's he's got to go to 15 to 5 major decision for Iowa state Steve Hamilton.
And so it's 19 to 3 Iowa State is on the board and here comes a match we've been waiting for Doug one of the ones we are looking forward to, Mark Kels Vig from Iowa State, Matt Johnson from Iowa State.
I know what we're going to see is where these people are at this time of year.
Bart Charles Big has been doing what Iowa wanted him to do, getting tougher and tougher as the year went on, more dominant.
He beat Robbie, had that at Oklahoma State in good fashion.
Matt Johnson's had a couple of setbacks here that were a disappointment in the last couple of weeks.
He lost one against Spiewak at Michigan that he didn't expect to lose.
And the question is, can he get his metal freshman self turned around for the Nationals and the big the big eights which come ahead of them?
Well, that is always a question.
No matter how good you're going, you get into the big eight, you get in the NCAA ways and it makes a difference where you're at as a freshman.
Some can do it, but very few does.
Barcelos pick against Matt Johnson Charles Vick from Webster City Just a little while, not very many miles north of Ames at Hilton Coliseum.
Matt Johnson from Brighton, Colorado.
His old high school just won a state championship this weekend out in Colorado.
That right?
Yeah.
And Brighton High School just won the big school championship in Colorado this weekend.
Looks like Charles Vick in the black, the Hawkeye Black.
Are you going to ask how I knew that?
I yeah, I was going to ask how you how you do that.
I read the Rocky Mountain News on the airplane last night, yesterday on the way up, and it just happened to have it.
Well, I thought you were just making it up, but I didn't want to embarrass.
I was pretty excited when I saw that.
I said, I can use that back.
We come to the center.
These are both pillars to Johnson.
This has as a dozen balls this year.
Charles Big has Ace.
And I don't know if there's a man on either team that has more than these two working guys worked in the middle.
Let's go work in on the edge.
Hey, man.
Green let him in about half the first period.
Iowa 19.
Iowa State three.
The Cyclones just got on the board with a victory by all-American Steve Hamilton.
You go.
How do you contrast their styles?
Well, right now, right now, Barcelos Big has been trying to control the head and stop it down.
Where you see that Matt Johnson's trying to get in underneath that.
Now see?
See that?
That's barcelos.
It's trying to snap him down, snap him down and then open up a single right there.
He was able to do on the high crotch right there, drives the cross for the three point takedown and he got the two.
They're looking for openings.
That's creating an opening by by working on one part of the body, then creating the opening to drive into the other part.
So Johnson goes to the bottom position, trailing to nothing at the hole.
It drives it on that single, that high crotch.
Now he's going to turn the corner and watch his arm cut across for the double drive through right there.
It's all about turning the corner there and finding the right angle.
It's not just brute strength in this sport.
Now we're back watching them off the whistle.
Charles Big in the top position.
Johnson of Iowa State in the bottom trailing to nothing.
Woody Green.
There's a warning against Chelsea for maintaining a parallel position in behind which means that you're not up to the side trying to pin the hole in the opinion of Pete George.
So Johnson had the hands free when he came up again and he was able to escape to the wild.
Good job of controlling the hands of his opponent.
Like we've said before, if you can control the hands on the way up, you're out, out of bounds.
Just almost at the end of the first period, we talked about how dangerous Matt Johnson can be as well.
Fall is a pinner, but you can see the first period trailing Barcelos back to one.
The attendance here at Hill Coliseum at Iowa State 5952 ticks down for the meet between Iowa and Iowa State.
Iowa leads 19 to 3 Charles big ticks down as his choice in the second period.
Johnson, who has won one of three matches against Charles Big this year, beat him out with the national.
They traded victories out of the national team championships.
Virginia and then barcelos big one in the dual meet in Iowa City.
Okay, hold it.
Kevin we saw it by Chelsea last week.
There's a caution against Chelsea.
Caution for moving too quickly on the bottom.
But Charles Vick did a great job against Robby, head of Oklahoma State down in Stillwater, beat him on a major decision last Sunday hope.
You saw that here on Iowa Public Television.
Unclear situation here, but Johnson still maintains control.
Well, he's got that inside leg in and he's reaching back, trying to create you know we've seen it before this played on and something that can get Kels big on his back but it's also gained him some riding time to the point where they're back to zero time advantage for either wrestle.
Kevin Johnson goes on the top Charles Vick leads 2 to 1.
All right hands free.
Mike Johnson did a nice job of following around and staying with Charles Vick there so that he wasn't able to escape that center back into the middle again from the edge.
Let's see the time left.
116 here in the second period, Iowa, 19, Iowa State, three after six matches.
Now in four, I should say.
I've given you the wrong score here the whole time.
Somebody should have a talk about this thing, T.J.. All by the second car.
I can give you hand signals is everything.
I don't need to say anything out loud.
I wonder what those four fingers were on the front of my eyes.
I couldn't see the map because you had you thought I was just waving 19 to before Iowa over Iowa State.
Good ride so far by Johnson Charles Big is not has not been able to get away in about 51 seconds it was Mr. Charles, this dad from Webster city from Webster city area there it's my roots.
My dad gets excited when Chelsea gets on the mat.
Charles Vick reaching across.
Now he's trying to break down Johnson's possession.
Johnson has the leg, and he's just holding on for dear life.
Here.
That's going to be a stalemate.
Let's go.
Neither one of them going anywhere with it.
2 to 1 Charles de Charles Vick in the red Iowa State car come in that goal comes over.
Mark tells me Jokic manages to get up to his feet But Johnson's been tough here He didn't have had control when he came up and wasn't able to get it after he reached the feet.
So Johnson now has 51 seconds of riding time now right here.
Matt Johnson is able to take him red Celtic back to the mat right there can continue with his control.
Again, we go into the referee's position and Johnson leaves.
He's almost the end to the right in time.
More than a minute.
He's staying behind the arm very well right here controlling.
He's not quite keeping Giles big down on the mat there, but he's able to stay behind the arms and keep control.
And now he's got that riding time.
Like you said, he's a little tired.
And Dan Gable's out there.
I think he's talking to his man, Charles Blake, saying, let's go, come on, you got to come out of there.
It's of concern, you know, and you're getting ready for the tournament.
You don't want to get in a position where you can't get away.
And we've talked about what an outstanding freshman this man, Johnson is.
And, you know, he's really done a nice job as a freshman.
These men have wrestled three times, as we said, this year.
Well, that's a very impressive period for Mat Johnson as it was.
He rode Charles big out and and now Johnson gets his choice.
He's willing to go under it's 2 to 1 in favor of Charles big time the man on top.
He still owns the lead.
He has the only takedown.
So it's very important for Johnson to get out, get out in a few seconds here so that he can get.
He does and he did.
There.
Dropped back in, wasn't able to complete it.
They dropped back in Nice.
He'll pick by Chelsea for the takedown.
That's good Presence of mind by Charles big Mat Johnson was coming in like a you know just a really hard he right here Mac Johnson drops back in Chelsea good composure drops down Look at that he'll pick with an underhook drive through for the takedown Now Johnson coming to the feet isn't out yet.
He's out now.
He's tough to contain.
He's very good.
He's a very good freshman underneath.
He doesn't seem to have much trouble getting away from being, which a lot of freshmen, as we talk to but in goes chow straight on the body lock he looks tough on his feet.
Yes he did it down six three.
Take that real He looks like he really knows what he wants to do from his feet and he execute.
So Johnson has been very tough on the mat, but it isn't doing him any good because he hasn't been able to take Charles big.
There's Charles big dropping down and get it, covering those hips, making sure his feet are in two point takedown.
We start again with a minute 23 to go Jerry Goodrich 6 to 3 a roll and out for six down well at six four.
But a takedown by Mat Johnson would win it for him because he would have great time if he was able to execute both a takedown and a right out hit.
And he wrote him out very well the last period.
So this is a big time right now on the feet.
Very important.
He still has a minute and 9 seconds to ride big time.
But again, Charles Big has all the takedowns.
He's been slicker on the feet.
Well, there's a warning against John reason.
He did it because Mat Johnson was circling out to the edge.
He was not coming back to the center.
So each has got it right here.
Each man who would be stalling again in the opinion of the referee would be loss of lose a point.
No, Charles big controlling on the top position.
They're looking to get him some reason for the heel pick.
He wants to do what he got a while ago for one of those little takedowns and he leads 6 to 428 seconds left to go.
Johnson and Chelsea, Iowa State's Tilton Coliseum crowd exhorting their young man to get in there, go under there.
But Charles Big is controlling him.
Oh, Johnson they want to throw from up here but well, it's all up to what Johnson can do from that position.
And there's just not going to be enough time left unless he can slick in there underneath.
There's just enough time for some execution here.
But it's got to be almost perfect.
7 seconds to go, man.
There's a caution against Johnson for moving too quickly under arm spin that failed.
And if that's where it's going to end, right there, 6 to 5, because riding time go to Johnson as a good win.
And it was dictated from the feet there for Charles Big, good tough match by Mat Johnson, the freshman Johnson was tough on top He was tough underneath, yes.
But he couldn't take Charles Vick down and Bart could take mapped out.
And that's where it that's the way it went.
6 to 5.
There's a reaction from his dad.
Let's see how excited he is.
Well, there he goes.
That's that away, son.
He says, Well, Nat Johnson, on the other hand, knows what to go back into the room in practice, son.
They'll see each other again, possibly in the NCAA.
He knows where he beat him on the mat, but he didn't do it on the feet.
He needs to get back in there and work and work the kinks out there.
Iowa, 22, Iowa State, where we go to 177.
And it turns out, although each man, each team had while the Iowa State team had two men wade in, then we're going to have a rematch of the Iowa City.
Meet Brad Canals for Iowa State against Don Finch for Iowa and Canal beat Finch in Iowa City 9 to 4 pretty handily, really.
But that was Fincher's time back in the Met.
But good single leg by Kansas again and good single leg.
That's a takedown.
Well, Finch is a is a we've said it before.
He's a kind of a funky wrestler and gets down on the mat.
It's able to sneak around and get a lot of wins out.
He was a heck of a wrestler for Brett, Iowa in high school, two time state champion undefeated.
His senior year when he went 38 no career.
Brett can now sit out of state or out of Irving Texas.
You don't find many great wrestlers coming out of Texas and Brad canals is one of the best ever to come out of the state.
But his father, I believe, was an Iowa State graduate.
He and Brad Canals, we told you before in a class of 512, in his high school class, he was the valedictorian, five out of 512 at oh, that's a lot of people in the class.
I had 26 and morning high school to green tech.
I had 20.
You had 20?
That's right.
A minute, 54 and yeah, and it's now 33.
After that exchange of takedowns and escapes here, it's £177 between Iowa and Iowa State.
The Hawksley 2 to 4 over the Cyclops with this match and two more to go again.
The low single by Kansas Kansas looking to try to plant Finch.
They're looking for the back end.
He still doesn't have the takedown because this is kind of wrestling you get involved with with Don Finch because he has the left figure for a very unorthodox, you know, stalemate or dangerous.
I guess that's what Pete George says.
He doesn't like that position from a health standpoint.
There's Ed Fanning.
He has ties, as you know, to both these teams because he was on the great stars of the 1980s for the Iowa Hawkeyes and made such an impression on the Iowa State program as an assistant coach.
Now academic counselor at Iowa State, because of an injury, forced him to give up coaching.
What a terrible blow to the sport and to and to Ed.
But he's well, I have a feeling ed will never get too far away from the sport on a c span like a house.
But those legs were there but now has an opportunity to get out here.
Right there.
You saw the unorthodox of don finch right there.
When Kansas was in, he was able to, like you said, throw the legs over and made it a flurry instead of a sheer two point takedown against himself.
And they came out with no points.
Three, three, a good match.
We have 16 seconds to go.
In the first period, Iowa State's only win was a major decision at 158 by Steve Hamilton, who I think everybody was happy to see was feeling well enough on that wooden leg to come out and wrestle against Iowa.
First period's over, Finch.
The first down corrals takes down right.
This is a rematch.
Finch and Kansas met in Iowa City, and Kansas won 9 to 4 as first time.
I'm sure many of you had a chance you might not seen canals before.
It was the first meet.
He went on college wrestling television for Iowa State.
See?
Now there's Finch down on his hips right there.
Not where most wrestlers who are trying to be, but he's very comfortable and is able to ride kind of a crab.
Crab ride is what you would call that there any time Kansas is complaining of a wrist injury of some sort, you see if you can look get a shot of Brad, Kansas when he turns the other way.
He has a good black eye to a good shiner on that left eye.
That's a stern like at the start immediately following match £177.
He's that will be like and yet we have 190 let's go Nelson against Simpson and at heavyweight somebody against somebody but we're not quite sure yet for team not at all sure because each side wade into two people John Austin Dorp and Mike Ferrone for Iowa, Jamie Cutler and Todd Kenney for Iowa out again There's Finch for the leg but he got a little bit too high and now Kraus might be out a position.
I don't know.
It looks like he was the position to reverse and I don't know if you've got this game because Finch is in a good position.
What will the official call?
Will they go home?
What great one.
One point.
You're still down or I'm interested to hear this.
I said watch it.
I don't listen to that.
That's Pete George talking to Dan Gable.
He didn't like the twist on the leg.
Hold it very well.
It's kind of interesting because Coach Gable, but the Pete George was listening to the coaches bench over on the Iowa State side, and George said that he doesn't listen to that.
That was an illegal hall.
Again, Finch goes on top role that was considered a dangerous hole.
Well, that was close because B George put the whistle on that kind of back up because they're in that situation all the time and you'd be blowing the whistle all the time covering 57 seconds to go.
Can I ask for Finch three second period?
And again, here comes that leg.
But can I ask just reaches for it.
This time he wants to come out the B's trying to do a hook shot here.
He's trying to take his arm through and hook it through.
Now look it.
And Finch is going to turn this into a I don't know, to an I don't know what Sterling Green as a warning against Finch, The one he blew the whistle.
I wasn't sure which way he was going to go.
Boy, I'm not either.
It's.
Let's just sit back and watch this thing.
I can't call it 43 canals over Finch, Iowa leads in the team score, though.
22 to 4.
Now, Canal says, yes, he was able to do it in a very standard way, a good stand up, controlling the hands and coming out for the escape.
5 to 3, 32 seconds to go in the second period between and Iowa states, 177 pounders at Hilton Coliseum with Tim Johnson.
I'm Doug Brown and Iowa Public Television Canal.
So even he got stuffed that time.
He went under nothing yet.
Nothing yet until Finch takes him to the mat takedown.
It's a takedown to tie the match.
a55.
Well, Finch did well, now look.
And he's got the cradle on.
Oh, Finch is pulling it all out in front with this bar side.
Cradle.
And he got a three point near fall.
And matches, like that's really turns it around.
They went from 5 to 3 to 8 to 5.
Green takes down those kind of things Just can't they just can't happen for Iowa State and but they seem to be happy.
Yes they are and they and Coach Gibbons has to be frustrated when those things do happen right on the edge of the mat.
Not much time left.
Get it?
Hold it.
Kevin Finch of Iowa with a big five point change of events there.
Trailing 5 to 3, he got a takedown on a nice counter and then a with a cradle, a near-fall for three more even.
And he's out for another point, 9 to 5 after the escape.
Well can now speedster get it going right here He needs to know more points against him he needs to have good straight ahead wrestling attack Finch at the hips make it go his way not Finch his way.
This is very important right now for Brad canals with a minute and a half to attack and attack aggressively.
And it's clearly important for Finch, too, because this is a little revenge against.
A man who beat him rather easily soundly earlier in the year.
Here he moves around and he has canals on his back for a second.
But a reversal got too near for him.
Now, I don't know.
I blew the whistle there.
I don't either.
We're out of bounds here.
They weren't.
They weren't out of bounds right here.
Okay.
Right here.
He stopped him just for the second.
Good call.
Two points reversal.
But then he blew the whistle.
They weren't off the match.
I don't know that it made that much difference, but the replays showed that it was a good call on the near post.
Yes.
Okay.
Outcomes Finch.
He's ahead now 12 275. lead at 14 seven.
Right right 14 to 7 That's it as Brooks Simpson getting ready for a £190 that he's wrestled Jim Nelson three times already this year.
At least three that we know about and one every time Don Finch against Brad Canals.
It's 14 to 7 in favor offense.
He's come from behind but two outs gets this take down 49 and that's the first takedown the canals has had since the opening moments of the match.
Hey, there's Jim Nelson, 190, founder of Iowa State, 3 seconds ranked 12th in the latest rankings.
Jim's Alaska assistant there on the left and Mark Johnson Cross, That's his man going to be in favor of Finch with only 20 seconds to go.
But it was a good comeback for four Finch Heath.
He began getting the big point.
Well, yeah, he used to.
Big move.
The big move used his cradle, was able to turn the whole match around.
Like you said, it was 5 to 3 canals.
All of a sudden it was 8 to 5, and Finch was on a roll, which he never finished.
I mean, he just kept going and has won this match 15 to 9.
Took advantage of mistakes, his run, and then made his way into one couple up.
No riding time.
Oh yes, there is 2 seconds, guys.
There is riding time for Finch and he wins 16 to 9.
So Iowa wins another one, 25 to 4 in favor of the Hawkeyes after £177 at Hilton Coliseum.
Dan is sending out his 190 pounder, third ranked Brooks Simpson, who did a good job against Oklahoma State in the meet.
We saw last Saturday, Sunday, he was in a tough match on Randy Couture's home match.
Yeah, I think you made a key point there.
On the whole mad as a pressure back situation.
And he came through and he was there were there were points in that match where it could have gone either way and Simpson turned it his way and most impressive style against guys that he's now wrestling on.
Jim Nelson's home match.
First time they've met here this year.
Nelson In the red.
Simpson in the black cyclones against the Hawks 195.
Iowa 24.
Iowa State Iowa.
Iowa 25.
Iowa State.
The only whatever the Hart for the Cyclones has been Steve Hamilton.
But Brooks Simpson, a state champion in high school out of Newton High School.
It's been a 190 pounder for three years now for Iowa.
Like you said, he's ranked third.
He's a good scrambler and he's had some big wins this year.
Jim Nelson, on the other hand, we've talked about him a lot.
Being a former walk on the state of Wisconsin.
He's got a nice job at 190 for the Iowa State Cyclones.
A bit more basic.
Not much of a scrambler is when you compare it to Brooks Simpson.
So he's a basic head on wrestler.
All right.
Here we come back to the center again, no score at 190 there.
A high crotch does cut off to a double, keeps his feet in looking to stay in low points here.
But it's close.
Nope.
Jim Nelson does a nice job of keeping his hand over the back there and avoiding the takedown.
They'll score at 190.
They're old rivals here already at their fourth meeting of the year.
Dual meets between these two Simpson and Nelson all won by Simpson so far my first three back to back there he is on a single put Simpson down now he's the two points to go flag got to take that now Nelson usually handles the low single very well but that time Simpson got the second leg Simpson got in on it Now he's going to drop down, catch both ankles, keep both feet in and get the two point takedowns, two to nothing.
Now Simpson comes up high, kept the leg to take away the first move that came up, even escape for Nelson, who then goes 2 to 1.
Now 2 to 1 in favor of the Hawkeyes.
Simpson bummed his elbow there.
He doesn't like that.
It's second time Dan Gable is asking him if he wants to have.
That's Jill and Casey Nelson there, his wife Jill and his daughter Casey cheering there.
Their dad and husband on Cassie airs tonight.
High crotch move by Nelson.
But as Simpson kept the arc for a while, not entirely though Simpson counters him well and now Simpson is in control takedown.
He's going to go scramble and it's 4 to 1 in favor of Simpson over Nelson.
Nelson made the move he was in on a high crotch move and Brooke Simpson countered it very well.
And get it 41 Simpson Simpson working on an armbar, keeping a tight waist, keeping Jim Nelson flat on his on his stomach.
And that's not where he wants to be.
And in the first period, 3 minutes are gone at a higher 90, John Reid takes down Nelson Nelson picks bottom here.
His choice coming down.
Simpson had to take down to the first period where 190 between Iowa at Iowa State.
Hawksley 25 to 4.
Nelson is out immediately.
He was able to get away quickly after the first Simpson takedown.
But that's what Simpson does best.
But you notice again, Simpson was able to jump right in there, do a little high crotch drop to the double leg.
He's got to take that hit.
And referee Bouchard says he has the takedown.
It's 6 to 2, 6 to 2 in favor of Simpson over Nelson.
Okay, hold it.
Cover him.
And we have again the situation where Nelson is trying to escape and getting on at least a little bit of a ride Simpson is trying to build up toward that minute now, 58, 59, one minute and riding time advantage for Simpson.
Even now he lets eyelets Nelson go six three.
Simpson has been able to take Nelson down three times.
Nelson's drop right in there was met by a good counter by Brooks Simpson right there Underhook in both arms countering out there and not letting Nelson in on the legs.
Here's a reminder if you're tuning in for Iowa Press.
Here in Iowa, public Television, Iowa Press will immediately follow college wrestling as soon as this Iowa Iowa State meet is over, Iowa press will begin and you'll see it all at £190 with less than a minute to go in the second period, 6 to 3.
Simpson Simpson's lost only twice this year.
He lost to Chris Short of Minnesota, who's gone for the year, and he lost to Matt Ruble, who's gone for the year, and he lost to Matt Ruble, the number one ranked man from Lehigh.
And that's it.
He did have one draw.
There's a warning against Nelson at six or so.
And then Barry goes into the one side.
He can go to either side looking for the high crotch, looking to control that upper body, to the openings for the lower body attack in.
He's had three takedowns, two on single leg moves and once on a scramble countering Nelson don't move there is a drop down to a single but they went out and the referee called going on red because he was just at the outside of the mat, just hovering around the line there at the end, at the outside of the mat.
Warning on Simpson.
No, that wasn't that he drove retakes neutral.
Well, 7 to 3.
That's right.
He said green And so from a 7 to 3 that penalty against Nelson is somewhere in the middle of this mean Iowa state became green.
I don't know how it happened 7 to 3 in favor of Simpson As we start the last period.
Simpson has riding time one because they also want to rail and I want to play football there my crotch cut off to a double drive through two point Brooks Simpson from Iowa and Simpson again controls on top He has riding time we've got to say a few.
Thank you, Sue.
Before we get to the end of this wrestling season, this is our final college wrestling made of the year because they go out of bounds first for Iowa State, who is Hilton Coliseum is the scene of this meet here.
I want to thank athletic director Max Jurich, assistant athletic director Dave Cox, wrestling sports information man Tom Paschal helped technical director Randy Baumeister and assistant manager Craig Whipkey and Jim Gibbons and all his coaches and wrestlers from Iowa State.
We'll get to some other San here.
There's the escape for Nelson.
He now trails Simpson 9 to 4 and Simpson again using that underhook checking by dropping down to the single leg.
Now there's Jim nelson trying to get in on his own single leg attack.
This time, Simpson trapped him as he went with that little pancake.
I think for Nelson, he was on the edge of the mat because that would have been danger for Nelson because and I also want to thank, by the way, University of Iowa athletic director Bump Elliott, assistant athletic director Larry Bruner, director of Promotions.
Rick Klatt, Wrestling Sports Information Director Phil Hatty.
Here comes Simpson again, nice counter this time by Nelson, but it's not going to work.
He's going to be taken down again in 11 to 4 in favor of Simpson and he has right time and a potential major decision.
And also Dell Jerky, the facilities manager at Carver, Kelly Gray, assistant manager there at Dan Gable, who's all his other coaches and staff wrestlers that I'll cross-body ride for Simpson.
He can just hang on here and you got to make a decision.
But he wants to tip Nelson possible to four back points and he's able to get those back.
Oh, he got reverse reversal, their team, their fourth and sixth, the reversal.
But the right in time will make the difference.
It's a major decision.
It was an impressive, very straight ahead, quite basic type of win for Brooks Simpson.
But he was able to execute on the feet to victory.
And so the major decision now it's 29 to 4 in favor of Iowa over Iowa State.
And here are the heavyweights who we're going to see.
We're not going to see Austin tomorrow.
I think a lot of people were hoping to see Austin dark, but they're going we're going to bring out Mike Ferrone of Iowa at heavyweight against Todd Kinney at Heavyweight.
And these are the big boys.
Mike Perrone weighs 262 on top, 2274.
They're both red shirt.
Ferrone is from Union, New Jersey.
And what do they call it?
Beef Ferrone This is beef.
They call him Beef Ferrone.
I can't believe I just did that against Todd Kinney.
Now Ferrone hasn't wrestled yet this year.
He was a state champion in New Jersey.
He came to Iowa to play football, so he knows what he's about out there and he's got a tough man to wrestle against in the wrestling room.
And those two doors.
Well, Todd Kinney really impressed me as knowing has a lot of presence out on the mat, uses his weight.
Well, the Iowa state heavyweight, I think, has a really good future look at see, that's how he used his weight to come around.
He's quick.
Yeah.
And the interesting thing about Kenny is he didn't start wrestling until ninth or 10th grade in high school.
I didn't do with the to.
So that is gone.
Yes.
Or can it now you saw that was quickness that was good counter does a nice job by Todd Kinney from Iowa State right here he finishes a move here uses his weight well covers the hips keeps his legs in two points.
So Kenny goes into the top position against Maroney of Iowa.
Kenny brings him right back to the mat again.
They go out of bounds.
We also want to thank, by the way, from you and I, Bob Mosely, athletic director Kevin Cain, the wrestling sports information director of you and I, Jim Kelly, the dome manager at the uniform.
And Dave, of course his assistant, and of course, Don Briggs and Jim Miller and coaches that you and I and the wrestlers there.
Certainly thanks to all of you who've written to us.
Watch our coverage this year and requested posters.
By the way, if you didn't get a poster, you are sorry there were so many requests.
I'm afraid everybody got one from Tall.
Well, I know our producer, Doug Brooker, is going to order about twice as many next year because next year's the 15th anniversary of Iowa Public Television's wrestling series.
We're going to celebrate it big time duct tape, twice as many posters to do on after the escape by Ferrone be up against Todd Kinney.
Kinney got the first takedown wondering where John just tuned in.
I wonder where John Austin Dorff is.
Well, Iowa does have more than one heavyweight and Austin is being given the day off.
His team leads 29 to 4 Hawkeyes over the Cyclones.
The only win for Iowa State came from Hamilton.
Then that's a quick move by Todd Kinney, I think.
Yeah, you bet.
I think he shows a lot as a heavyweight there.
Well, but the only guy who could beat him in high school that last year was Austin, though.
That's right.
They met in the state finals and in the district finals, and that's who beat him.
John Post, North west Liberty 4 to 1.
Kenny is 12 and eight this year with two falls There's John Austin dork right there.
I think he knows he has it under control and he'll be the Hawkeyes heavyweight as they go into Big Ten in the NCAA.
But this is a good shot for redshirt freshman as we see Mike Ferrone right there And a little break from the football action.
Can he handle it well?
Well, turning right over to his back, he has Ferrone on his back.
This is Kenny and he's got a lot of weight on top of him.
Doesn't quite have the right angle yet.
There it is.
It's close.
You see four on his shoulder up there.
And it's not a fall and it's a three point NEAR-FALL three five for Kenny lead 7 to 1, a little something for Hilton people, the Iowa State fans to shout about at the tail end of this Iowa Iowa State meet, which has been dominated by the Hawks 29 to 4 first period ends 7 to 1 in favor of Kenny Young, Iowa Ferrone looks to Dan Gable.
Dan Gable shrugged his shoulders, says, What do you want me Roll it.
Right right here, Todd Kenny doesn't quite have the angle.
He doesn't have all of his weight on top of Mike Ferrone right here.
So cronies able to keep that shoulder up.
See, he had that shoulder up the entire time.
Therefore, no fall was called a three point near-fall 7 to 1.
Kenny on top.
There's was a big difference between being in great wrestling shape and being in great shape, period.
And no matter how good Mike he is, as far as his shape is concerned, this is the first time out in the varsity competition.
It takes your total conditioning wise.
And you know, he's tired rallies.
Oh and O's coming into this one so you know he joined after football season and probably just kept working himself into shape in a good way and maybe providing a little competition for John Austin Dauphin, the wrestling fingers, one of the bigger wrestlers that Austin garb often faces.
But Kenny has controlled him very well here.
He got seven points in the first period on two takedowns in a near-fall and Kenny wasn't just riding over.
Well, Ferrone does not want to do any roll action right now with someone.
I can't cut Kenny on top because Todd Kenny has good questions.
He one in green right there.
That's where he wants to be.
Now he has a really good chance to finish four over here with 45 seconds to go because he knows he's just chest to chest with it or chest to shoulder.
Anyway, he's got good, good position here for Owen.
He's trying to fight off his back here and doing a pretty good job of it.
He rolls through and he did get away three point NEAR-FALL 10 to 1.
Now he caught.
Yeah, he had a warning on green there, but I'm not sure just who Green was earlier before the fall.
Well, I think that the warning was on the Iowa wrestler.
All right, 9 seconds, 8 seconds, 7 seconds to go in the second period.
Again dominated by the Iowa State wrestler Todd Kinney.
That's Dan Gable right here.
Todd Kenney trying to make it takes down a finished product here, trying to put him down.
But Ferrone is able to get his shoulder.
He sneaks his shoulder through.
He keeps working his shoulder, and he eventually was able to roll through, get off his back.
Now, for the first time, Ferrone goes on top back up, but Kenney turns up right there, out of bounds, 10 to 1 in favor of Kenney.
Going into the down position, there's ferrone Okay, hold it.
Dan Gable ran him in here at Heavyweight in place of John Oates, The Dark Knight.
Dan Gable said before the match that it was a kind of a tough week in practice for Iowa after a very strenuous road trip against the two top teams.
And you can hardly his team maybe for being a little bit off at speed this week, but they came back very, very well here against Iowa State and have dominated so far.
They lead 29 to 4 going into the heavyweight match for only against getting out 10 to 2 after the escape, 11 and one rather after the escape for Kenney Doug Kenney in the red, he comes very close to the heavyweight limit of £275, working out for him, working the two good size heavyweights here.
I know both of them are good football players.
Kenney was an all state football player who is wrestling, and Mike Ferrone is a state champion wrestler who was playing football.
And now wrestling for 45 seconds to go in the match for on a low single.
And he has that ankle low.
All he needs do is pull it in but wasn't able to quite execute it.
He turned with it, maybe trying to go upstairs and get Kenney on his back.
Kenney was not there, as we say, when when Mr. Ferrone arrived, so he didn't even get the takedown.
11 to 1.
KENNEY Right away, Iowa State against Iowa, the Hawks, 29, the Cyclones four.
There's a high crotch move by Kenney, and he takes four only right to take that.
But there'll be no near-fall points he couldn't hold in there, and Ferrone was able to clear his shoulders It's 13 to 1 at the center guys riding time in 1541 for Kenney Kenney.
So it's a major decision for the Iowa State heavyweight and the Cyclones win their second major decision.
That's their second decision of any kind.
That's What it's a 29 to 821 point victory for the 1964 Iowa over Iowa State.
Now, these two teams will be generally getting ready for the big H and the Big Ten respectively, and then the National Collegiate tournament.
Although Iowa State does have a home heat against Oklahoma State on the third round, the final score again is 29 for Iowa and eight for Iowa State.
