from the Hilton Coliseum in Ames, Iowa.
And earlier I talked with both coaches about tonight's duel IPN presents And earlier I talked with both coaches about tonight's duel College Wrestling.
It's the Iowa Hawkeyes versus the Iowa State Cyclones By that I mean, if we do real well here tonight, I feel that.
Hilton Coliseum in Ames, Iowa, and as usual, a sellout crowd of over 14,000, the biggest in wrestling history, 14,500 here.
And I hate to do that this late in the season, So witness the battle for the number one ranking in college wrestling.
I'll look at the current rankings shows Iowa, number one, Oklahoma number two and Iowa State number three.
But since those were released, both the hawks and cyclones are face the Sooners.
And here are the results that show how even these three teams are.
Iowa got to draw 1919 and Iowa State escaped with a 19 to 18 win as Nate Carr was tied.
But oh, you had to forfeit at 177.
And if you watched our first telecast of the season, you saw Iowa beat ISU 24 to 11.
Well, I think it means a big meet But when these two teams got together, bizarre thin to see how we stand and everything and get us primed Good evening, everybody.
I'm Doug Brown.
And I'm Dave Hardy.
And here we are to wrap up our college wrestling series on IPBN And this year we've had 12 of them, 12 dual meets.
Well, I don't think I was thinking And I think this is probably the biggest one.
Dave Oh, I think you're absolutely right.
When these two a get together is always a great one.
And at this particular time, both of them are vying for those conference championship, two national championships.
So they're at their peak.
Some really bizarre things, you know, have happened.
If you are a fan of wrestling and this dual meet over the years, remember a few years ago when Iowa State lost and national rivals, Iowa and Iowa State coming right up.
a chance to win and came down to a draw against Iowa because the heavyweight was stalled out.
And last year the injury to Randy Lewis and unfortunate industry turn and national rivals, Iowa and Iowa State coming right up.
they made around.
And then Osenbaughl pinned Banni for a very big upset win.
and national rivals, Iowa and Iowa State coming right up.
That was last year.
And that, by the way, was the last time that Iowa has lost a dual meet.
They've won 28 straight and they had that one draw down in Oklahoma.
And it always makes a difference about momentum.
Oh, without question.
The coaches would like, of course, for that momentum to show itself in the earlier weights, but it could happen anywhere, middleweights up or down at the bottom and it could happen right away at 180.
And here is the number one ranked man in the country, Barry Davis The Hawkeyes.
Davis number one, as you indicate, and looking for that coveted national Title one loss, 35 big wins.
And he'll have to have at least up tied tonight because Kevin Diakiese is wrestling very well.
He surely is ranked number five in the country.
And of course, wrestling better now than he has at any time during the season.
We might point out that Joe Gibbons is not in the lineup for Iowa State tonight, but at 158, we're going to have a matchup we didn't expect to have.
We know that this boy would be in there.
Jim Zaleski.
That's correct.
Currently ranked number two in the country and last year placing fifth in the national.
He's tough, good technician and he's going to have to be because stepping up a weight to meet him tonight as the defending 150 champion Nate Carr and maker course is currently ranked number two in the country But again, defending national champion at that weight class 150.
And he's up a weight tonight to meet Zaleski and it could go back to heavyweight again.
The last time these same two Iowa and Iowa state heavyweights met at the beginning of the year, it was a barnburner.
There's Lou Banach defending national heavyweight champ for the Hawks and currently sporting the number two ranking in the country.
And his opponent is Wayne Cole of Iowa State.
Here are the matchups And weigh in.
Had a big thrill for a while in that first meeting.
He sure did, leading 11 to 1 and then was pinned by the Hawks.
Lou Banach.
Yeah, Lou, the tiger.
That should be an outstanding matchup tonight is perhaps the two primary wrestling coaches in the nation.
Dan Gable and Harold Nichols got their teams ready.
from Erie, Pennsylvania, 21, three and three.
And earlier I talked with both coaches about tonight's duel That first one, for the Nationals.
Well, I hope it means a lot in terms of our performance.
By that I mean, if we do real well here tonight, I feel that.
a sophomore from Joliet, Illinois, 22, two and one.
But where I want them to be, if we don't do real well, then I'm going to have to have some quick work with them.
And I hate to do that this late in the season, but I'll have to do what I have to do.
And as of right now, I hope that we're in good enough shape that when I leave here tonight that Matt Otto I'll feel good.
Tell us what it means for Seedings.
A sophomore from Emmetsburg, 20 wins four losses.
Well, it'll it'll make a difference in a lot of the seeding matches.
Any time you start having the caliber of athletes that we have here with Iowa and Iowa State, that it'll make a big difference in a seeding meetings.
a senior from Ames, 19 one and three Jim Gibbon Nick, tell me what this Iowa Iowa State meet right before the tournament means to you?
That's another good match because Kerber is coming back Well, I think it means a big meet to see how we stand and everything and get us primed A senior from Cedar Rapids, 20 wins for the next two steps at the conference.
And the Nationals, you shifted your weight around a little bit.
You always like to come up with something sneaky.
Well, I don't think I was thinking necessarily I would change it because we thought maybe we would have a chance there.
Winning both weight time will tell.
£150 for Iowa.
And I asked Dan Gable here what he thought this made Matt coming into the Nationals.
And you'll see that means a lot to both these coaches.
It's a classic matchup between two intrastate and national rivals, Iowa and Iowa State coming right up.
and national rivals, Iowa and Iowa State coming right up.
Dave Fitzgerald We're back with tonight's big dual meet between Iowa and Iowa State.
for Iowa State, a senior from Miami, 13 and five.
And you can see just how closely matched these two teams are over the years.
Now let's join PA announcer Rod Williamson for tonight's starting lineups.
Jim Brown Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Hilton Coliseum and tonight's wrestling match between the University of Iowa Hawkeyes and the Iowa State University.

Gary Hummel It's got to be another great one.
Iowa enters with a dual record of 15 victories no losses, one draw and is coached by Dan Gable and Jay Roberson.

A sophomore from Cedar Rapids, 35 wins one loss Duane Cole in Iowa City.
Berry Davis That sound is low, for Iowa State, a sophomore from Erie, Pennsylvania, 21, three and three.
And there is our referee, Darrell Henry, Kevin Darker who's going to be wrestling at the Nationals.
That's all important.
That first one, You see the Banach brothers and Zaleski £126 for Iowa, and Jim Gibbons and the referees wearing a mike.
a sophomore from Joliet, Illinois, 22, two and one.
This is green.
Mark Trevino for Iowa State Jr. From Westlake, Ohio.
Seven and four.
Matt Otto weight After that in the second period, £134 for the Hawkeyes, A sophomore from Emmetsburg, 20 wins four losses.
well, everybody's ready.
Jeff Kerber for Iowa State, a senior from Ames, 19 one and three Jim Gibbon Look at that top three, That's another good match because Kerber is coming back always four in a row, national titles.
£142 for Iowa.
A senior from Cedar Rapids, 20 wins one loss, Leonie Zaleski for the Cyclones, a junior from River Grove, Illinois, 17 and five.
But Davis got one single leg counter with a wizard Randy Conrad It'll be a competitive match.
It was the last time the meet goes.
£150 for Iowa.
Darkness has a different market for them, but I'm on the edge.
A freshman from Riverside, California, eight wins, 13 losses.
Marty Kessler for Iowa State, a junior from Brock Mark, Georgia, 15 six and one Murray threw.
It didn't work.
And there's the big switched car going up to 58 And he's an aggressive wrestler.
£158 for Iowa, He's a good technician.
He has good technique.
a sophomore from Cedar Rapids 23 and one Jim Zaleski for Iowa State, out of out left.
a junior for Erie 17 to earn money.
These are two sophomores at all.
CARR There was the big shift for Carr.
He's up against a tough one.
ZALESKI Jim is an outstanding wrestler, won 67 for Iowa, Davis is in there pretty tight now with a body lock.
a senior from Davenport, 19 three and one But the reserve maneuver by doctors, four points appointed Dave Fitzgerald stepping across a whizzer again there just for a second.
for Iowa State, a senior from Miami, 13 and five.
Jim Brown The other period, second and third are 2 minutes.
won 77 for Iowa, You remember this one starts on the feet, second and third, a junior from Port Jervis, New York, 24 and one Ed Barnett And Hathaway, a minute and a half for Iowa State, a junior from Urbandale, 27 and two.
Davis made moves Gary Hummel It's got to be another great one.
Darkness in that Russian tie up as a thing USA Advantage has always wrestled well in Ames, won 94, Iowa, a junior from Davenport, he's out here, that center circle.
19 and five, beat Bush He's got plenty of mat space to make the two points work on.
for Iowa State High Junior from Marshalltown, 26 and three, to get that leg lift up in the air.
My man and another £190 class is really a tough one.
Good heavyweights for Iowa, with the hip down and back.
And we're back on the move from a junior from Port Jervis, New York, ten and one new banner We're a minute away from the end of the first period.
for Iowa State, a junior move for guys 13 seven in line.
at the end of the first period, Duane Cole in Iowa City.
That sound is low, and I guess an name must be terrible, but it sounds the same from Utah.
And there is our referee, Darrell Henry, Pleasant Grove, Utah, who's going to be wrestling at the Nationals.
He's meeting the captains of the teams in the center of the match.
You see the Banach brothers and Zaleski and Jim Gibbons and the referees wearing a mike.
Let's let's get back to your colors.
This is red.
This is green.
Green at your choice.
Good one.
Even match is best of luck to both teams.
Now it comes down to a matter of maybe who might get caught Well, that means that Iowa will have a choice at 118 inches every other because that last impression could be important.
weight After that in the second period, whether the match will go up or down at this point, he could turn this into some point for a takedown.
well, everybody's ready.
This is the 14,507 people.
But you see the repeat match it with only a few seconds left.
Look at the years of the way these teams are finished or the Nationals over the years.
Stay on the mat, Look at that top three, always four in a row, national titles.
No score.
And over the 25 year period, Iowa State has finished very, very well.
I wrestled this guy before and, These two guys can't wait to get at each other.
£118 darkness against Davis you know, I'll do to go out and beat this guy.
and you saw darkest try to make a shot right away.
But Davis got one single leg counter with a wizard And the warning did go against darkness.
challenge that's going to really make a difference in the way the meet goes.
It's work here and now.
Darkness has a different market for them, but I'm on the edge.
I always say fashion caution on the bottom man.
That's right.
Now, no single of near the end, back to the middle of the ten foot circle, back in the neutral positions.
will mention the warning for falling on Dawkins.
Barry Davis says he was a three time state champion.
There is another shot for a single by a dark horse.
It didn't work.
He won three titles, came in as a freshman.
He's just improved ever since.
He sure has.
And he's an aggressive wrestler.
He's a good technician.
He has good technique.
Three times he was a captain of his high school team.
Likewise good out of out left.
in there really both legs in.
That's Kevin Darcus from Erie, Pennsylvania.
These are two sophomores at all.
Important first.
And I'm Barry Davis.
Again, why enabled high start hip hop.
You saw the signal by the referee, Oh, they're both going there.
Davis is in there pretty tight now with a body lock.
But the reserve maneuver by doctors, four points appointed to go in the second period trying to come out.
stepping across a whizzer again there just for a second.
Oh, Marcus is leaving.
That was a maneuver to his advantage end of the ball to the to the mat.
with good offensive maneuvering by Davis.
The counter maneuvering by darkness, three minute first period.
The other period, second and third are 2 minutes.
You remember this one starts on the feet, second and third, one man and then the other on top.
He has a whizzer We're about a half away.
And Hathaway, a minute and a half into the first period, darkness couldn't get that shot.
Davis made moves darkness is locked in there real tough.
Morris working on it.
Darkness in that Russian tie up as a thing No scorer here in this first one, left on much lower that time Davis did.
And he's got that leg up now he's out here, that center circle.
He's got plenty of mat space to make the two points work on.
He's trying to get a lift with it to get that leg lift up in the air.
He may fall off, but the focus is no way he comes with the river.
Overlook again, get that leg down to the mat with the hip down and back.
And we're back on the move from but Davis is well aware of where he's at and he's on the feet.
trying to maintain his base coming into the standup.
We're a minute away from the end of the first period.
But Darcus is doing a tough job riding with that Keep in mind, if there's no score at the end of the first period, one of the two, it will receive a warning for stalling will go to the one that's least aggressive.
And I'll tell you, that'll be a tough business right now to decide who it was.
17 seconds left in this.
Again, Horse takes a shot.
Couldn't quite reach it from outside.
He's been quick on the whistle, but Bear has been able to stave him away and make his own shots.
But neither one is scored.
They missed a bit in there deep a couple of times, but the fans that understand that overlook and reserve series Diamond Circus has been using it Oh.
Oh, he called it the way.
exceptionally good here tonight.
And we're staving off the takedown possibility for Davis.
Now it comes down to a matter of maybe who might get caught for not making enough shots in the last minute, because that last impression could be important.
Two points he calls it to.
Dark Horse tried out an ankle pick and couldn't quite reach it.
Davis is locked in on it so He's got him in a wheelbarrow position.
he could turn this into some point for a takedown.
But you see the repeat match it with only a few seconds left.
Consequently, it had to be the takedown.
The referee is wisely indicating stay on the mat.
Stay on the mat, And that's what the referee wanted to change.
ride at the end.
No score.
Well, earlier we asked Kevin Diakiese, what what are you telling yourself, Kevin, as you get ready to lead off?
I wrestled this guy before and, you know, we've worked on things I got to work on and I know what I got to do, you know, I'll do to go out and beat this guy.
So guys just got to go out and do it.
just keeps coming at you.
And the warning did go against darkness.
Now with that half Nelson and on the far side working in Iowa gets a choice here, Davis says.
I'll go down.
against the deep crotch No score.
They said that Iowa, I always say fashion caution on the bottom man.
Barry Davis, Just quickly here, Doug will mention the warning for falling on Dawkins.
If he's up, if he's one two next time with one match, that's like why it's a caution on the bottom for Davis If he's called again and the caution hits a match point against him, no more points have both boys have violations against him at this time with the cost of a match point.
The next officials watching this for potentially dangerous.
Which can be a point at this stage, said Griffin.
Now now darkness managed to well they got the double take Davis down but the double grapevine in there really both legs in.
He's got the hips out of control keeps the base out from underneath Davis but Davis manages to stand up.
We'll get to probably a potentially dangerous situation here.
You saw the signal by the referee, but that doesn't mean he has to stop.
steps in on the near side over there controls the hip Look, dangerous there for dark as he tends to wrestle in that position.
And Davis now is on his feet with a minute to go in the second period trying to come out.
And responsibility goes from the top man to put the bottom end of the ball to the to the mat.
Daryl Henry is going to set him up now.
Tough ride so far by darkness.
I want a one last one.
He's riding tough, but the referee, I'm sure, is watching closely the fact that he's in the top position when they come to their feet.
And I'm very has a whizzer there.
He has a whizzer and he'll want to be careful because he could catch himself Harry Davis has been tough on top.
going to the mat off that because darkness is locked in there real tough.
Got to get him down.
So now we'll have a new star.
No scorer here in this first one, He does it 49 seconds at £118 to go in this He does it writing time and now they'll move top Harris Barry he is he got that Oklahoma he started in a big way very well and he's got a half Nelson.
He's driving around now.
so he had a pin on a Norman against the powerful Sooners.
Barry Davis leads by three.
It's a big one.
He's trying to get some back points in there right now, but Davis is well aware of where he's at and he's Iowa, Iowa State trying to maintain his base coming into the standup.
Now.
The switch But Darcus is doing a tough job riding with that deep waist and 10 seconds in the match to make up two points for Dr. a minute and 35 right in time, and we're now less than 20 seconds away.
Dre, something for most anything Now Davis is out.
There.
Is Barry out.
It's one to nothing in favor of the hawk.
17 seconds left in this.
The second period, Davis dropped down into the single high country.
Now he's got the left with it.
He could score even with only 10 seconds left.
But Darcus has wisely at £118, 3 to 1, as Johnson.
been in there, tough, fighting it off, and I think he will.
Well, that puts it up first Oh.
Oh, he called it the way.
Drop.
He waved it all the way that off and it.
the darkness is capable of beating anybody in the country, I don't know.
Yeah, let's wait and see That's lesson was it before the whistle.
It was before the whistle.
Two points he calls it to.
time, scored the points when he needed them.
And so Barry Davis is up by 38 right there.
He's got him in a wheelbarrow position.
That's what it really means to the supporting parts of Duncan.
We're on his hands.
Consequently, it had to be the takedown.
You have writing.
The only question was zero whether or not the two points occurred before the buzzer.
And that's what the referee wanted to change.
Okay.
All right.
Davis is up.
Darkhorse has three points to make up if he hopes to upset this year in 25 matches.
the number one ranked Hunter and 18 pounder from Iowa.
He and Gibbons have gone at it.
Darkhorse had a good ride in there, but he lost three points right at the end of the period.
Gary Davis just keeps coming at you.
And Davis got that smile right in there.
Now with that half Nelson and on the far side working in against the deep crotch He graduated last here, oh five, six, seven here.
riding much alike, aren't they?
They sure are.
The county referee is counting out loud himself.
And Now, Darkhorse is up there at the end of the match.
You see, Marcus is trying to use the whizzer, but he's not very deep with it.
Well, you can't get deeper there because Davis was walking there real tight on it.
Let's So back to 1.5 left.
We've gone 35 seconds, if Davis I'd say, and he rides another 4 seconds, But in this case, we're going to he races the riding time clock on the side here.
Okay.
Which can be a point at this stage, said Griffin.
For one that was on the other.
You see Otto keeping his hips back and low because Zeno Gary block that switch really well but that deep waist does like to throw from up there in that tie up position.
but working behind the arms maintains a good base, And Mark is a dangerous wrestler, makes that £118 feel pretty tough on top as you Hawks fans well know.
Man, steps in on the near side over there controls the hip he's about body throw it up by cause you don't.
works on the half Nelson on the far side.
We have a minute left and Barry Davis leads by three.
there you see that Iowa bench Stalemate no make maneuver neither wrestler able to improve his position to get a new start.
Daryl Henry is going to set him up now.
I want a one last one.
Oh, one left.
All right.
Stay set.
Green tap In the first period, and away they go.
over on hook, all for a body move.
Harry Davis has been tough on top.
Time already had a warning against Otto Lot of pressure he's getting he's getting there on time.
He does it at Hilton Coliseum tonight, the biggest crowd in now.
Only 35 seconds left to go.
You see Davis staying there very well and he's got a half Nelson.
He's driving around now.
but not a lot of activity out there right now.
You can see the time ticking.
Barry Davis leads by three.
It's a big one.
The opening match.
Iowa, Iowa State Referee cautions for Otto got a single out getting tough on top.
for that Now.
The switch that's making the one point move out of it, but there are only 10 seconds here, 10 seconds in the match to make up two points for Dr. Dre, something for most anything if he expects to score at this point No score.
shot, there's no riding time.
It's about even greater darkness and an escape.
Davis had an escape and a takedown, and the Hawks win He's always been a good freestyler, at £118, 3 to 1, as Johnson.
He keeps the pressure Well, that puts it up first points up in the Hawks column, actually, as expected.
But it was going to be, you know, the darkness is capable of beating anybody in the country, and everybody knows that as well.
A nip and tuck match from the outset.
But Davis He puts that head out front.
was the aggressor most of the time, scored the points when he needed them.
But Otto blocking off.
There it is.
Now, 126 Iowa State advanced this way.
It's probably in the tournament will be Joe Gibbons, but he has trouble with illness and in his dropping weight, he didn't want to go down too fast tonight.
And so in replacing him is junior Matt Otto against Mark Trevino of Iowa, who's lost only twice this year in 25 matches.
Armbar tie after he can see some of the 14,500 here Well, he's a good one, without question.
He and Gibbons have gone at it.
GREEN As you can see, Matt Otto was a redshirt.
A couple, of course, ones struggling to take Mark Trevino from Joliet, Illinois, last year after the school dropped wrestling as we saw an early talented wrestler, brother to Scott.
before that, his freshman and sophomore year of eligibility.
He graduated last here, oh five, six, seven here.
The county referee is counting out loud himself.
And There's Mark Zino of Joliet.
that's moves he must have checked for stalling inactivity.
two years ago last year, one of 16 out of 23 matches.
Now that he won it, it came out that.
No.
Oh, that's never a good call.
The sporting parts of Texas, you know, this case went out of bounds likewise.
But in this case, we're going to Chuck D Hagler, former national champion for the Hawks.
have made a nice move up, though.
Dropped low on Otto and made a nice move at the right method.
But down the middle, that what is going to undoubtedly matter As a matter of fact that tells you how good he was at Iowa.
for Zeno and Otto.
You see Otto keeping his hips back and low because Zeno tough assistant coach.
does like to throw from up there in that tie up position.
Right.
And Mark is a dangerous wrestler, as you Hawks fans well know.
Man, you know your score to zero with riding can tap he's about body throw it up by cause you don't.
but Trevino is on his feet immediately Well, there you see that Iowa bench and in the span of about 6 seconds a lot of activity here out all made a shot but telegraphed his move way off his base.
He was reaching on it easily countered by 13 on you know on the right in the Iowa black about a minute and a half gone a minute and a half left.
In the first period, he had no score under arm over on hook, all for a body move.
Now for the fans that don't recognize it Time already had a warning against Otto on their on Hawks over on Hawks upper body maneuvers because he didn't tuck in there to tie up, block him on the bear hug.
If he ducked out.
And I'd like to move off that upper body center type maneuver.
No.
14,507 is the official attendance here And let's go body body throws at Hilton Coliseum tonight, the biggest crowd in wrestling history in the United States seven and four.
West last time, but not a lot of activity out there right now.
for referee's count, six.
Referee cautions for Otto got a single out Next time that Otto is called for inactivity, it's a point for that supporting part of the supporting part that got to be an out of bounds situation back in the middle ten foot circle.
That's where the activity should take place.
crowd is unusually quiet here just until that moment.
4746, 45 seconds left.
No score.
Fresno won a junior world silver medal this last year and freestyle competition.
He's always been a good freestyler, but that out of bounds again, because he likes that both count He'd like to keep that on top, maybe reach around behind, grab He keeps the pressure very intense wrestler because you know is and he keeps the pressure on his opponent and consequently or a head shock and spin around behind for two.
he's almost caught on a run after the match right But notice that Otto wisely circled on his story.
that looked inevitable because has been shooting from far out this time Pacino coming around behind and he's almost got the takedown almost but not yet.
He puts that head out front.
He's trying to come around behind.
But Otto blocking off.
There it is.
and it's now for nothing.
Snap down counter.
He spun around behind.
He blocked off that head at the front side.
And then second thought, Otto off his base as Otto flattened out here.
in a nice move off of it.
Two point takedown for Pacino.
And we're right at the end of the first period.
We feel like a driver of that choice here.
Armbar tie after he can see some of the 14,500 here and there is Matt out.
I want a time out.
You may have time.
GREEN As you can see, Matt Otto was a redshirt.
He transferred from Auburn.
He was redshirted at Auburn last year after the school dropped wrestling This is Gable.
Talk and the year before that, his freshman and sophomore year of eligibility.
about Paris Nichols talking with the referee.
He finished second as a freshman, third as a sophomore in the Southeastern Conference.
Well, in my estimation, he was going to fall down.
He's from Ohio.
There's Mark Zino of Joliet.
The whole conversation there.
He was redshirted two years ago last year, one of 16 out of 23 matches.
And it was a two time state champion at Joliet, Zino has 33 seconds of writing time.
back on beat in his senior year.
Chuck D Hagler, former national champion for the Hawks.
A lot of great memories for Bok fans from Chuck as well.
And he's here.
Boy, I'll tell you to go a who's who of wrestling around this arena right now.
As a matter of fact that tells you how good he was at Iowa.
Now start.
Carter.
The official start cap.
And he is a tough assistant coach.
Second period, Otto now will get to the top position State expected to win here against casino I situation is now you know your score to zero with riding can tap but they don't want any big superior decisions Otto once the top position and he takes it but Trevino is on his feet immediately but the hands turned in for the one faced off.
he popped quick and got the one point escape and in the span of about 6 seconds I think he wants points.
you know on the right in the Iowa black If he can pile up the score Otto on the left and the cyclone Red are inside.
Now for the fans that don't recognize it Our casino 126 pounder of Iowa, on their on Hawks over on Hawks upper body maneuvers But he's telegraphing his move a lot of that is a spin off of the international freestyle wrestling and a lot of these boys are familiar with that style.
And I'd like to move off that upper body center type maneuver.
but a lot of activity there but near the match edge, And let's go body body throws accompanying with clips of one kind or another.
Then at 14 left to go, Lot of combination.
That's Otto seven and four.
This year.
He's been just behind Givens at £126 front headlock position for referee's count, six.
head down now he's dropping that ankle.
Next time that Otto is called for inactivity, it's a point Dangerous.
Potentially dangerous here.
center hustle in three mark with that ankle to the outside, a minute left.
The second period crowd is unusually quiet here just until that moment.
And so the position had to go away.
And he has a good harness.
Otto got that.
That arm of that because he knows trapped.
And that makes it tougher for little cameraman up and you know got the head arm tie up and that's a tough tie up position.
He can go either way on it depending upon how he can set his move off.
He'd like to keep that on top, maybe reach around behind, grab an ankle or leg and think of a body shock or a head shock and spin around behind for two.
But notice that Otto wisely circled on his story.
of Iowa State filling in at 126 against Mark.
Consequently, that's a point Jeffery Going off the mat, Daryl Henry said it was 3 to 1 over darkness and a good match.
an attempt to avoid wrestling and it's now for nothing.
there's a single leg by I crowd out about 40 parts of And for Zeno, both wrestlers are out 10 seconds to go here 6 to 1 as Otto flattened out here.
For him, took him off his base, goes around behind again, 4 to 6.
Nothing.
Russell Underneath in the waning seconds of the second period here.
Mark Trevino against Matt Otto There's the end of the period.
That's true.
That's a Hawk fan.
I go to your colors.
Go to your colors.
And that's.
This is Gable.
Talk the first two matches at Ames Hilton Coliseum.
about Paris Nichols talking with the referee.
This lesson.
He could have came up.
Guys are you're going to come up?
Well, in my estimation, he was going to fall down.
Jim Gibbons against Jeff Kerber, The whole conversation there.
No disagreement.
That was the penalty point which was assessed against Otto.
there is the national champion Jim Gibbons, at this rate, That's all I got time for.
Zino has 33 seconds of writing time.
Otto has five.
they've won seven state titles in the state of Iowa.
Pacino has a six point lead at the top position.
I look for this one to be a good one.
You're set with, much better than in this latter half of the season.
not cash.
You're down the bottom.
Keep in mind now, a caution is nothing more than a than an early start.
Now start.
Carter.
The official start cap.
Second time it happens.
It's a penalty point.
It was against Otto.
Really aims at those tournaments, I don't think Iowa State expected to win here against casino but they don't want any big superior decisions are all so good that he didn't buy Otto in early start ups, but the hands turned in for the one faced off.
now for a position and opening So does, you know, didn't really make a great effort to by giving them a little bit thwart that move either once they got up.
I think he wants points.
He wants to take them on his feet.
If he can pile up the score every little extra point here, it makes a difference.
But that back on the feet again.
six one casino out in front and no writing time.
single-A Our casino 126 pounder of Iowa, You got it locked up firmer, walks off over the top, that's a single shot.
But he's telegraphing his move is really not taking his face with him.
Real good position to earth.
but a lot of activity there but near the match edge, No point yet.
not of much value.
Then at 14 left to go, Mark Pacino, back to action again, leading 6 to 1 and an awfully long shot by Otto.
Again, we have that front headlock position spin around by Frosinone.
No points yet and he's catching on his head down now he's dropping that ankle.
getting better at controlling the advantage position I think.
Dangerous.
Potentially dangerous here.
I was telling you, watching the ankle.
That's right.
He's watching with that ankle to the outside, which will go get not the ankle, but the knee.
Yeah.
Most got And so the position had to go away.
45 seconds left it still casino by 554 in a balanced position and getting his shot single leg.
and he doesn't have riding time enough to make the point either.
No.
Kerber has a shot, but The best the best thing that the cycling maybe could wish for right now is that maybe Otto could get a five point move.
on his back if he stays there too long, yes, he is.
Oh, There's Jeff Kerber getting ready to face Jim Gibbons at 134.
He'll be up next.
He's on in real trouble on his back Matt Otto of Iowa State filling in at 126 against Mark.
But he could very well have helped look more points.
You know, the opening match was won by Barry Davis, 3 to 1 over darkness and a good match.
But we've got a couple of wild positions today.
So Casino would like more points he hasn't been able to get him and there's a single leg by I crowd out about 40 parts of both wrestlers are out 10 seconds to go here 6 to 1 He was locked in with the figure four.
wouldn't be surprised to see Mark try to throw something here to get some extra points.
Didn't you see how bad he was going to get?
And he himself would want to be fairly cautious here.
He's got the match pretty well wrapped up.
He wouldn't want himself to place himself in a position where he'll lose five points and have a tie match out of it.
There it is, no riding time.
The winner is 6 to 1, Mark Trevino.
You see it, of course, what Kirby is attempting to do.
And so the Hawks go up by six and they win the first two matches at Ames Hilton Coliseum.
on the injury end of it is that that he got And here comes Iowa State's I'm sure that did hurt.
Jim Gibbons against Jeff Kerber, wrestler likes to have Emmitsburg product wrestling for the Hawkeyes, who's had a fine year.
Now there is the national champion Jim Gibbons, at this rate, I've cut the top curve is definitely wrestling senior from Abe.
There's Jeff Kerber of Emmitsburg.
Between them, they've won seven state titles in the state of Iowa.
but these boys are excellent technician without question, In high school.
I came already.
I look for this one to be a good one.
Looks to be a great match.
Kerber has been wrestling much, much better than in this latter half of the season.
And of course, Gibbons has been wrestling real well lately, so it should be another good one.
40 seconds.
Gibbons is pointing for the Nationals, as he does every year.
He gets himself mentally prepared.
Really aims at those tournaments, to avoid become a little more I guess maybe didn't do it.
both boys feeling each other out now for a position and opening Well it may be my daughter he's waiting for that the shop by giving them a little bit but Gibbons managed to counter the counter.
far out for that particular move.
But it was a good it was a good shot, so to speak, and got the temperature down up, by golly, because that was a super move by back on the feet again.
to almost an offensive two point takedown for Gerber single-A forgiven.
You got it locked up firmer, walks off over the top, And the starling warning gets going to get that inside crotch goes against Gibbons choice.
here.
Notice how he gets his hips down and back Oh, we asked Jeff Kerber if there's been a turning point to earth.
that one of the biggest boos I've heard No point yet.
He's going to take down.
Gibbons takes the home leg over, but there's no point yet at this particular spot.
that I was good enough to beat some of these guys Kerber still countering with an arm over the top, then on his hip, scooting back, Kerber chose down and started there we could get a stalemate, drift away on in.
Oh, in the second period of a scoreless match, and don't like that they felt maybe getting better at controlling the advantage position but it was a tough call.
But at that point either one was improving their position But keep in mind, if in most fourth and it did appear as all they were going to go for get more activity on the feet.
Most got Jay Kerber setting up in front of Gibbons in a balanced position and getting his shot single leg.
And he did that on a lateral drop Kerber has a shot, but that got him back points right at the very end and up his foot.
we have a similar situation right here.
We could get a stalemate again, although Gibbons is in trouble on his back if he stays there too long, yes, he is.
Oh, for Jim Gibbons Oh, yes.
He's on in real trouble on his back heel points because it isn't a an advantage position.
But he could very well have helped look more points.
I thought he might have called us.
Tell me.
There it is.
There's the stalemate.
But we've got a couple of wild positions today.
arm in a ten That was tough.
Jim put himself in a predicament there Iowa won the first two matches and Gibbons on his shoulders or any problem right now.
And I think that came out of the knee situation he was in.
He was locked in with the figure four.
There was no point there.
You never did engage in turn loose of it.
Didn't you see how bad he was going to get?
And now I see them working on Jim Gibbons very last year notice giving up the leg a firmer in this match, £134.
Jim Gibbons was wrestling against Randy Lewis and Lewis was injured.
I see what's happening now.
You see it, of course, what Kirby is attempting to do.
He's got that leg lock in there.
And of course, that's what's going to get that knee that I'm sure Gibbons is complaining about at this point on the injury end of it is that that he got twisted in there probably a little bit.
I'm sure that did hurt.
And with the tournament's coming up, that's something that no wrestler likes to have one to nothing.
to go to go 53 seconds to go.
In the first period I've cut the top curve is definitely wrestling with more confidence that we need to see him on the first, not that to share in, Kirby comes in on a single high cup in over but these boys are excellent technician without question, whether he can make this work for you or not.
and they're equally as good defensively counter wrestling as they are offensively.
It We may get a stalemate situation here.
So we're going to see a great bout here.
firmer, firmer and get the head up.
We're down inside.
40 seconds.
I don't look for it to happen.
Yeah, we've had a lot of activity and one point both very cautious at the moment.
Set it up and then tough in there with the national champion.
both boys looking for an opening there with a shot to avoid become a little more I guess maybe didn't do it.
So right in time belongs to Jeff Grant.
Well it may be my daughter he's waiting for that high crotch shot and countering it there You're looking into the Jim Gibbons face there but Gibbons managed to counter the counter.
He sure did are all back up and that's something that'll be a great one to get another picture up, by golly, because that was a super move by Kerber has always been tough on top of the rider, Gibbons and a super move counter move turning him to almost an offensive two point takedown for Gerber wrestler, and he's riding pretty tough here right now.
end of the period and above that period.
Riding time is about even now.
And the starling warning goes against Gibbons choice.
Oh, we asked Jeff Kerber if there's been a turning point in this season, what was it that one of the biggest boos I've heard it was going down to Oklahoma and it to all Americans, 126 wins, no losses, no ties and just mentally it picked me up because it made me believe that I was good enough to beat some of these guys and that was probably a big turning point looked like Gibbons was wanting to pick ever.
Kerber chose down and started there but Kerber and a nice job of countering her in the second period of a scoreless match, but Gibbons was given the automatic warning dial up Now with a minute 15 to go make it.
and then in the tough one to call out that warning.
But keep in mind, if in most fourth that first period someone's got to be set, red against it.
generally goes against the least aggressive individual.
You heard Jeff Kirby talking about beating all Americans in Oklahoma.
Derrick Glenn was one of them.
And he did that on a lateral drop that got him back points right at the very end and up his foot.
The hands faced off in the neutral position.
One point Harper's ahead, one that I think 18 seconds to right in time Now, Gibbons the way he is going to get his one for Jim Gibbons now here's an injury to Jeff Kerber the flush.
ankle I think the edge and Oh I see left arm control is controlling at arm drop down into a single through Tanner right what caused it if he just kept wrong turn wrong or what arm in a ten what we're going to see here knee jerk comes Iowa won the first two matches and Gibbons our move shoulder roll Granby attempt combination Shea Gibbons One more point yet no points Yeah Now we don't see a thing here right now Now Gibbons nice counter here by Kerber Can he do anything with it spins on through gets his one faces off floating around and behind on that counter there's no points for grip evidently it it happened on the notice giving up the leg a firmer you got to watch that leg under there.
No I hear it might have happened we could get a potentially dangerous situation or a stalemate here.
I'm not sure.
No.
And they're a stalemate.
I'll tell you, a cover is countered Gibbons shots extremely well.
He really has.
And that was a super shot by Kevin and a great counter by Kirby.
We have 35 seconds to go in a second period, He's two great wrestlers and they're going to settle it one to nothing.
Kirby, Iowa won the first two matches, 3 to 1.
Davis over Diakiese, 6 to 1 for Zino.
Alvarado.
and there's no riding time advantage for either wrestler See it in the background, 2323 seconds left.
In this period.
Kirby comes in on a single high cup in over about their loss, Anderson, to trying to get his man, whether he can make this work for you or not.
It We may get a stalemate situation here.
Iowa State obviously needs a win here.
Gibbons has got the force, lock it around the head on firmer, firmer and get the head up.
Work up.
He might score, but there's only 3 seconds remaining.
I don't look for it to happen.
There it is.
So.
Well, one point in that career, we've had a lot of activity and one point and that went to Jeff Kerber, who has looked really tough in there with the national champion.
This time it's going to be Kerber up and Gibbons down was a nothing as a score 18 seconds.
So right in time belongs to Jeff Grant.
to win this thing.
You're looking into the Jim Gibbons face there 45 seconds to go.
are all comers ready now.
You fit in behind.
Hold on to the big boys from the far side.
Can.
for the bullpen, one for solid 40 seconds left in this match.
Kerber has always been tough on top of the rider, the high school wrestler, and he's riding pretty tough here right now.
a roll a roll by Gibbons to see if he can counter.
Riding time is about even now.
Oh, boy, Jack.
Kerber going to work there, leads by one He stepped over with a roll, but there's no point yet it and crowd, and Nilsson hasn't had a lot to shout about yet.
Quite a record there at the high school level for state championship.
126 wins, no losses, no ties Yeah out of bounds Come to your shoulder roll with a counter move.
Following behind, Kerber looked like Gibbons was wanting to pick that shoulder roll, come out the back door for two, but Kerber and a nice job of countering her cautioning caution on the bottom.
not following through with German.
This.
Herbers on the legs.
Now with a minute 15 to go make it.
They'll make So that's an error.
going against it.
All right.
Jim Gibbons has to get out in order to stay set up tired, but he has to get out So here is Gibbons trying to get out.
on the next 30 seconds or so in order to avoid in time point.
Now, Gibbons the way he is going to get his one Jeff Kerber.
now here's an injury to Jeff Kerber And you can see we're getting a little bit ankle I think the edge and a winner at £134.
I don't know what happened there or how it happened but it There was no riding talk.
it happened right away off that after the neutral position with gain by given but I don't know what what caused it if he just kept wrong turn wrong or what like is Kerber four, two, one.
what we're going to see here knee jerk comes our move shoulder roll Granby attempt combination by Gibbons he takes out leg on gentleman big in those first three Wait for that Now we don't see a thing here right now Now Gibbons spins on through gets his one faces off Here's one that cyclones really thought they could get evidently it it happened on the And I'll tell you, Jeff Kerber has proven himself follow through by Gibbons off at one point it's good because nothing happened after the escape because that and he is in Hawkeye Land now.
142. that that ankle sprain or turn however it might have happened it might have happened if Gibbons had that leg on the follow through and the one point escape came outside.
And down there it was the last game.
Jeff Kerber What he uses one minute, After a good start by, Carpenter got up.
Richard, a four time state champion of the state of Iowa, And we'll see a lot of activity in this match, and of course, his opponent, a three time state champion, as you mentioned earlier, seven state titles between the two of them.
He's two great wrestlers and they're going to settle it on their feet now because it's 1 to 1 and there's no riding time advantage for either wrestler So now 000 a minute and four.
Kerber has three or 3 minutes to worry about their loss, Anderson, to trying to get his man, Jim Gibbons, ready.
Oh, the hawks in the it Iowa State obviously needs a win here.
They hope to get one.
They absolutely have to have it.
And Jeff Kerber knows that he's been improving, improving, improving.
And for all those people have said, well, maybe Jeff Kerber isn't going to make it in college.
Lenny Zaleski knows that very well.
He's made it.
He's made it.
He's a good one.
There are two good ones out there but he can do it all.
and push and go out there on the part of both wrestler.
coming off of a second place finish in the Nationals.
Both of them know they've got to have a takedown to win this thing.
Well, he lost.
45 seconds to go.
He lost down at Oklahoma to Andre Metzger.
And I know you're hanging on one year warning against Kerber now they're both worn hanging on the arm, bucking off and what it really amounts to for the bullpen, one for solid 40 seconds left in this match.
I'll tell you that was plus the trouble Here comes Kerber, a roll a roll by Gibbons to see if he can counter.
After they got him, Blake, he continued to Oh, boy, Jack.
He stepped over with a roll, but there's no point yet it and there are a ton for Kerber Jeff Kerber with 20 seconds to go I see how good he is right now.
Yeah out of bounds You're set and the body pressure with it.
and I'll tell you if he can ride all the way out, he gets another point.
But of course, if he rides all the way out, he wins anyway.
16 seconds left.
There's not a lot of time left here that could happen.
But he's got a31 lead Except for the one, by the way, Leonard cautioning caution on the bottom.
German.
This.
and pick up a five point move or a 4.0.
I should forgive him now, but I'll tell you Russian.
He knows he has to get up.
You got to crash and stay set.
So he's got to catch it.
So that's an error.
I think.
I didn't realize that he'd gotten over three this week.
He doesn't need he didn't.
They they agree that oh, there you go by So here is Gibbons trying to get out.
high Zaleski and he has But he doesn't have time.
He doesn't have time.
Well, it's all went further None.
No.
Four points.
Nope.
and the Hawks come up with a big one at £134.
I was kind of surprised they were that in hopes for me Jeff Kerber.
to get into 4.4 definitely felt that he was losing.
And you can see we're getting a little bit out of the Hilton crowd, I see that headlock.
There it comes.
Right?
a winner at £134.
There was no riding talk.
I guess it was actually a there should have been because if he wrote him out, I would have been 4 to 1.
The 30 is 41.
Real tough.
I'm surprised if they were a little longer.
He's the man like is Kerber four, two, one.
And it's now a nine to nothing lead The hawks come out big He has to take those two two escapes big in those first three Wait for that that's the momentum we're talking about Here's one that cyclones really thought they could get they had to have.
And I'll tell you, Jeff Kerber has proven himself and he is in Hawkeye Land now.
142.
But tell you what, you add him up between the Lenny Zaleski ranks second in the country for Iowa against Randy Conradt.
This is a rematch of the Iowa City match.
And down there it was the last game.
It was a move by a headlock by Conrad.
After a good start by, Carpenter got up.
Yeah, we may get two points against him here with the got And we'll see a lot of activity in this match, regardless of who the victor is.
Right.
Dr. Beaufoy, going to give it 100%?
we have 5 seconds to go up Lenny Zaleski, the first two, the Brother Act, is It's been a good first period was the last game.
another Cedar Rapids Prairie product.
Randy Conrad's from Illinois.
So now 000 has 30 seconds.
14,507 here at Hilton Coliseum Conrad's choice He chooses down second period.
to watch these wrestling titans.
Oh, the hawks in the it 73.
Conrad once town civilian chair.
Conrad does like to lock up her body.
Lenny Zaleski knows that very well.
he plays, He was determined to shoot next, Now he has 38 seconds, seven so far and counting.
but he can do it all.
He sure can, cause he's coming off of a second place finish in the Nationals.
Your goal?
And that tells you right there what kind of talent he has.
by Conrad for the one quarter Well, he lost.
He lost down at Oklahoma to Andre Metzger.
three, Came out first, but he doesn't believe that really proves it just by any means.
You got to out.
That's a double edged shot.
Good one.
Oh, boy.
I'll tell you that was plus the trouble because Conrad almost got his head in there, too.
That's right.
He can is, of course, the key to that.
After they got him, Blake, he continued to follow through pressure down on him and most importantly, Yes.
As a matter of fact, that is a cradle finished the move.
So many kids get in.
But let's go.
That's pretty good.
you know, no thought to have yet Yeah, It's all right, guys.
I see how good he is right now.
There's a double with a trip inside.
Trip?
You're set and the body pressure with it.
So he made it work for the two boys.
You couldn't see it on the other side there.
But Zaleski, almost got a half just on the way down.
Conrad is out.
Except for the one, by the way, Leonard And yes, looking for some upper body back.
You'd like to get a body, throw off of that and pick up a five point move or a 4.0.
That's a takedown and a two point NEAR-FALL or three point NEAR-FALL with it and even a fall.
Oh, well, we discussed momentum.
The big goal, I suppose overworked term in sports, No, I just said he locked he locked up, had control.
but Iowa seems to have it right now.
There's no doubt about it.
They they agree that oh, there you go by let's go high Zaleski and he has let's go Conrad on his back headlock.
Body roll None.
No.
Four points.
Nope.
All points.
I was kind of surprised they were that in hopes for me to get into 4.4 definitely felt that he was losing.
It's the only one to continue in the vantage position.
I see that headlock.
There it comes.
Right?
Friendship high up time with it.
He's got that arms just in there real tight with it above the elbow.
And he's out there in the perpendicular position.
Real tough.
I'm surprised if they were a little longer.
Tension release at one point makes it harder to the last.
He has to take those two two escapes Conrad hasn't been in the advantage position yet.
40 seconds in the first period to go inside my neck.
All escapes.
I always gotten out fast.
Try to quiet down this crowd at Hilton Coliseum, which is the biggest He's letting Zaleski crowd in wrestling history make the offensive maneuvers here on the feet.
for Jeff Almond.
But tell you what, you add him up between the getting the advantage from it.
Iowa Fieldhouse heat and, this one prep, 27,400 people out here for these two teams to meet this year.
That's fine.
And you can score on account of wrestling, but.
It was a move by a headlock by Conrad.
That almost word point may turn against him.
Yeah, we may get two points against him here with the got He got hurt with a double leg lift Just a double leg.
back to the neutral Conrad's whizzer was apparently good enough we have 5 seconds to go up started out tonight, Dan Gable said, well, It's been a good first period was the last game.
I go to your colors Elite sports I would say his team is ready for the Nationals at this point.
has 30 seconds.
Red is up ten Brett Green takes down second period Conrad's choice He chooses down second period.
So is our boy.
Little confusing when he calls it red scores on the board for two and we know he can't see it references game three There's the home team and minute 14 of riding time in fact once 73.
Conrad once town dirty red is in the last game, dirty red he plays, but it came out the back door and turn it into a reversal he may work for riding time.
Now he has 38 seconds, seven so far and counting.
and that's 10 to 4.
He's been successful on his feet.
Get out, Turn and stand up combination by Conrad for the one quarter three, Now he comes into the Kaiser cradle but loses the lock.
Just reach down for the leg on Conrad and And Johnny he's got Conrad in a little bit of trouble here right now.
Whether or not he can turn it into two, I don't know.
Norway threatened to lock in with it, maybe possibly take it to cradle, move off of that.
Yes.
As a matter of fact, that is a cradle And I think the Hawks would just soon to set keeper.
But I think he's, you know, no thought to have yet dropped out to run out of his way.
He gave the three point takedown.
Iowa leads nine to nothing.
Oh, let's find out what did happen here.
Let's let's listen.
Here it is right now.
Locked it up before it went out.
That's two takedown.
Yes.
You're down ten.
And yes, he said he had it locked up before he went out of bounds.
So he gave the four point takedown.
He gave the one point intentional release to Conrad And here we go again.
He locked up before he went out.
Had to throw Nick before he went off the mat.
The hips went out the hips with the supporting points.
Here he's on his hip.
What's your there?
No, I just said he locked he locked up, had control.
maybe we might get a stalemate at this point.
And then at six to go at 6 to 3, let's go Still 45 seconds to go.
in.
That was a big two point for key is 20 wins one loss this year.
Zaleski that put him out front six three going into the 3 seconds left that second period, He's in a tough hundred and 42 five class this year.
44 seconds of right time.
He may take this as far as he can safely before he Conrad up because he'd like to get that riding time.
He's got very close to it.
Conrad going to sit out position but notice Solecki putting a lot of pressure on the upper body and taking away the bass from Conrad as best again.
But.
but he has to finish it.
Conrad the threat on out for the one faces off a minute and 1 seconds of riding time for Zaleski, and he leads 6 to 4. improve his position, get a new start in the middle.
Conrad hasn't been in the advantage position yet.
All escapes.
What?
Give Conrad's got to be shooting some takedowns here pretty soon.
He's letting Zaleski make the offensive maneuvers here on the feet.
And consequently, he's Maybe not.
getting the advantage from it.
Conrad gets over 38, but Oh, let Gillespie's in there.
Awful close to that bear hug.
Tanner doing the counter.
That's counter wrestling in the past.
That's fine.
And you can score on account of wrestling, but.
Well, you see an ice pack on Jeff Gerber's ankle.
That's good news and bad news.
The good news He the bad news.
He got hurt with a double leg lift Just a double leg.
Takedown by Solecki Conrad.
He has got into the double got a lift with they put him down for the two.
It's been all Iowa so far.
started out tonight, Dan Gable said, well, And this brings us to 150 at 158 Germany, where Harold Nichols if we do well tonight, he'll look like we're ready for the Nationals.
I would say his team is ready for the Nationals at this point.
They are.
Red is up ten was two good chances to win and not just what last period, 8 to 4.
Zaleski out in front.
I was a great wrestler and a great coach.
So is our boy.
He go ready to is still very young career here, I think he's got right in time but I don't know for sure Murray Cruz's wrestle at 5867 all season, and Nate minute 14 of riding time in fact once You'll see that next.
dirty red Murray Cruz is going to win 50 since he was in high school.
Zaleski came out of there in good shape, but it came out the back door and turn it into a reversal two point It just barely started here.
and that's 10 to 4.
Now, on the reversal, he's locked up in Marty Kessler from a wrestling family, that maneuver right now.
Whether he can get anything off of it or not, I don't really think so.
Now he gets a leg in the inside steps in.
I'm sure the Cyclones Now he comes into the Kaiser cradle but loses the lock.
And Johnny A six point win for the cyclones here.
146 to go second period.
What would Zaleski is wrestling comfortable, comfortably and in control well with riding time.
He'd be leading at this point 11 to 4.
And I think the Hawks would just soon to get the chance turning loose on off from the feet, and then you get a major decision out of it.
Let's go.
That's a third period.
And that second, as I said, I look forward to turning loose.
to head arm times Iowa leads nine to nothing.
They won all the first three ways.
Davis Over darkness and a good night for Zino Alvarado 6 to 1. here in the second minute And Kerber upset Jim Gibbons 4 to 1. here in the second minute It was the optional start for Gillespie on top in the collegiate level this year.
here in the second minute He gave the one point intentional release to Conrad and move in on a single double attempt, but no points at this here in the second minute at this particular time.
Left finishing for the takedown I look for maybe we might get a stalemate at this point.
here in the second minute You'll give him time to work.
There it is.
Still 45 seconds to go.
here in the second minute That is the last key is 20 wins one loss this year.
here in the second minute No way out.
It is a feature.
here in the second minute He's in a tough hundred and 42 five class this year.
He finished second last season staging a double here in the second minute over single shot by Conrad, here in the second minute but he has to finish it.
here in the second minute We have very little time left here for Durand.
Still to here in the second minute come in, northern boy able to improve his position, get a new start in the middle.
here in the second minute It's 10 to 5, a takedown.
What?
Give Zaleski a major decision before 18.1 more than he'd get from a regular decision there.
Almost have to look like he might turn it into two here.
Maybe not.
Conrad gets over 38, but here in the second minute yeah.
No, no, no fight.
But he got right in time and the right and time point makes it 11 to 5 left.
Zaleski Well, winner over Randy Conrad and it's now 1210.
I think the hops are off in a big way.
here in the second minute Let the 11 year turn.
Randy Conrad, five.
You see Iowa's lead there.
It's been all Iowa so far.
And this brings us to 150 at 158 Germany, where Harold Nichols normally Nate Carr would be at this weight maneuver a little, trying to get what he thought was two good chances to win and not just what Murray Cruz's wrestle at 5867 normally an eight car would be at this way.
all season, and Nate Carr up to face Jim Zaleski at 158.
But Marty Kessler is facing Murray Cruz, who was inserted here, Murray Cruz's wrestle at 5867 all season, and Nate Carr went up to face Jim Zaleski at 158.
You'll see that next.
In fact, Doug, this is the first time Murray Cruz is going to win 50 since he was in high school.
Marty Kessler from a wrestling family, And he said it wasn't all that tough to make it wrestlers, one of them was at Arizona State to 45.
It just barely started here.
Marty Kessler from a wrestling family, he has three brothers who are talented wrestlers, one of them was at Arizona State transferring now to Iowa.
So we think we can get the win at 50 and 58.
Well, one can project a lot of things into this weight class.
I'm sure the Cyclones made the move with the hopes of getting a win here One point is okay, but get on your knee right here.
with the score 12 zero three with a heart right now first.
So a lot of things one might look to happen here.
A six point win for the cyclones here.
What would put them right back in there with a 12, six, 13 deficit we have the one point escape.
and right So it's two zero crews out in front.
just referee counting They're Cruz is from Roc Mark, Georgia.
counting time against people for shots and sure Not many Cruz spinning around not about but that he's been an exception he had to head by head to head arm types on the competitions.
trying to spin around behind for the two as you head on shots So let's go.
here in the second minute of the three minute first.
Hey, Cruz gets the leg And if he He can and the Iowa City meet Murray Cruz wrestled at 150 while he didn't wrestle.
Nothing yet and out of bounds.
All As a matter of fact, it was Tim Brown at 158 or Tom Pickard at 167.
Pickard is not in the lineup, but you move.
And Marty Kessler is in his freshman year at good position.
He got in there deep, but had nothing with it.
Doug Murray that time, he when he came back up, he came out in I think that Cruz probably could take Kessler down warning against Kessler, by going in on a double leg or a single shot.
and he had nothing with that.
He got real deep on it, the penetration, but the warning for falling.
Although if he gets Kessler more than penalized already for inactivity.
right, that He got him on a spin through once, there is no score but Iowa leads 12th and nothing at the team.
So right 35 seconds.
for referee's counting for inactivity.
And another penalty against Kessler.
Inactivity takes place and we're going to running or a penalty.
No off the air for the man.
No control neutral position.
Cruz countered.
An under underarm spin there a spin through by Kessler, would love for Cruz to keep pressure on him, 44 seconds to go.
In the first period, no score, or maybe get the disqualification later.
head to head.
In the center of the mat.
Sokoloff would like to get back into this, meet with a win at this weight class.
Arnie Kessler, for titles in the state of California Oh, oh, oh.
I tell you, needless to say.
Hey, hey.
Are Let's go down to Hustle, Hustle, Hustle.
in dire need of a win here somewhere along the line because the Hawks have some tough guys.
Coming up, the Mannix everybody stuff It's three nothing.
and you still got one here Cruz At the end of the second period What one point goes to Cruz You're down.
Kessler with Starling, That's the second time he's been called a match point in this case.
You heard the referee calling, calling the time out for inactivity.
I think that was a good guideline for him to follow in determining the solid call.
And of the first period, 10 to 15 second interval towards the bars and activity Not a lot of action on the whistle by either top position leads one to nothing.
Well, we asked three pros how this decision came about for him.
The goal at 150, the statement asked him, How do you feel about it?
William Nate kind of thought it up and they think that I'll do all right in 50. a roll through attempt by Kessler and just released And we lost the last time at 58 and Nate thinks that he can do a better job at 58 and period.
So Nick went along with it.
So we think we can get the win at 50 and 58. and Cruz blocks off with the head on control.
Right.
And Cruz is out right away.
One point is okay, but get on your knee right here.
He's trying to come around behind the fence around 4 to 2, High time, right?
JJ Just the time he buckle, knee buckle.
I would look for maybe an intentional release As far as the referee is concerned, he's looking out for the safety well for the contestants and after he garners a little bit of writing time.
we have the one point escape.
So it's two zero crews out in front.
I'm sure he'll feel that he can score better from the feet Cruz is from Roc Mark, Georgia.
that's about 107 to go in this match.
Not many of the outstanding wrestlers come from the South, but The Hawks have won everything so far, he's been an exception on the competitions.
A little stronger up here, I guess.
Definitely.
So let's go.
And this is the switch.
Hey, Cruz gets the leg This car will go up against Jim Zaleski let's see how Kesler counters it, what Cruz does to take it down.
He can oh, he pulled it right on top of himself.
You see Cruz in the advantaged position Nothing yet and out of bounds.
All 5 to 2 now.
off a close.
Two points.
There it is right here, Doug.
He's got the leg and he takes that head and pulls him back on top of himself.
He didn't get to turn through on it.
It's a peculiar move.
Yes.
He really saved a takedown against himself.
that's perhaps what they thought they We have a minute left.
In the second period, Cruz leads by two.
I think that Cruz probably could take Kessler down by going in on a double leg or a single shot.
He's open for Marti Kessler.
All right.
Has to watch himself, too, because he has more than penalized already for inactivity.
He got him on a spin through once, But Giesler with now 7373 35 seconds.
with 5 seconds for It was another stalling call, without question.
and that's this And another penalty against Kessler.
It's a second time.
The next time it'll be a two point penalty.
scoring the first second points And if it were to be called another time, it would be disqualification.
Murray Cruz with a73 win over Marty Kessler.
At this point, I'm sure the cycling coaches would love for Cruz to keep pressure on him, keep after him, and hope to score big or worse for the next two point penalty for throwing in or maybe get the disqualification later.
This will be a good one.
Not a great deal going on up here at this point.
However, Arnie Kessler, for titles in the state of California in freestyle is easy on the edge.
but he'll be ready.
Back in.
Let's go down to Hustle, Hustle, Hustle.
Carr second ranked at 150 Zaleski Hardly seen enough time for points to be scored here, but you never know.
It could happen, but not very likely.
in second 58.
And it didn't happen.
It's three nothing.
Cruz At the end of the second period Very intense people.
hit and our crew starts on top.
A lot of activity going on out here.
You're down.
This will be the first position of advantage for Cruz.
Three zero on the board.
Okay.
Stay they want to be a part of it.
start for a two minute period.
defending £250 national title in the first four Not a lot of action on the whistle by either boy there, although Cruz face behind the arms second at this particular weight class, doesn't put himself in any position that might cousins and problem last year we saw inside Jim Zaleski a roll through attempt by Kessler and just released and followed through by Cruz waiters sit up turn in one Randy and Ricky Stuart of Oklahoma State, £158.
Kessler for the one point escape then he comes into the double overshot his face didn't get good position penetration and Cruz blocks off with the head on control.
although the supporting parts of the musket were inbounds and He's got a real tough one.
He's trying to come around behind the fence around 4 to 2, I don't there's nothing there.
and it's 5 to 1.
I would look for maybe an intentional release after he garners a little bit of writing time.
some people might have wondered why one third not coming back.
He'll know he'll not get him to he'll give him one before he gets into.
Consequently they don't get warned for that.
I'm sure he'll feel that he can score better from the feet than, again, from a down position that's about 107 to go in this match.
£150.
The Hawks have won everything so far, all the way through 140 to lead 12 to nothing.
Carter return to the mat.
Four decisions.
But here Murray Cruz has a four point lead top four Iowa State filling.
And this is the switch.
This car will go up against Jim Zaleski after this match is over First period Iowa and Iowa State.
You see Cruz in the advantaged position car against the last period.
in the last minute.
Let's run and Joe Kessler go car against the last period.
5 to 2 now.
Favorite Cruz got on the scales, they were winning each other Kessler has been warned, wants penalized twice for inactivity.
He got on the scales.
So if they hawks only lose a three point decision here, Throw.
that's perhaps what they thought they Right now both boys are looking for opening, but might have lost to begin with.
But the next weight will make the difference if the cyclones to pick that up as a win, then they will have gained something out of this switch.
in another half gone and to go first period We're in the last 30 seconds.
Three point lead for Cruz was a step down to the counter move for a takedown.
Oh, Zaleski has Carr in a very very bad position almost back point.
But with a one point escape.
But Giesler with now 7373 no question about it.
and you see the end of the match nearing with 5 seconds for immediately of being pinned, but it's a five point move for it.
and that's this the winner 7 to 3 scoring the first second points and he's got that near like junior, Murray Cruz with a73 win over Marty Kessler.
getting his hips under control.
And so with that victory the cyclones get up on the board for the first time the Hawkeyes 12 and the Cyclops three We've got two more.
and here comes a barnburner.
This will be a good one.
The kind of cliche, I guess, £158.
Jim Zaleski, who I'm sure when he came by arms, did not expect to wrestle Nate Carr tonight, Two more but he'll be ready.
The second ranked 158 pounder, and this ought to be a strong match.
Carr second ranked at 150 Zaleski in second 58. he's got a commanding lead at this point and he's working Very intense people.
A lot of activity going on out here.
to 0 in favor of Jimmy Zaleski.
No points left that's gotten into this match, Carol.
They see the activity that's going on and Boy, what a first period he was.
they want to be a part of it.
And look at that Iowa bench twice in Paris.
Put the brakes on the nation.
Are it at 155 £50 class one, defending £250 national title in the first four that's going inside them is right second at this particular weight class, one of the eight where he was fifth last year in the national for a five point move and he picked up last year we saw inside Jim Zaleski He leads nine zero.
defeat the two time national champion Randy and Ricky Stuart of Oklahoma State, £158.
Jim Zaleski pancaked him in a hurry, Now, the problem here is that they can't actually out of bounds center, although the supporting parts of the musket were inbounds and He's got a brutal look like maybe set up a cut for two more.
consequently the referee here, I told him right there he got a go.
I don't there's nothing there.
It's my time out.
158, is going to have to pull something out of the hat here.
The concern there with the simple fact that some people might have wondered why one third not coming back.
And the point was can you going to make hasn't left me was not allowing him to return.
Consequently they don't get warned for that.
That's the reason for the concern.
And of course, the next time that happens, I'm sure you'll see a warning for stalling.
but no mat points, no point And this would be in this case against Zaleski for not allowing He must take it to the mat and with normal reaction time Carter return to the mat.
in order to score the two Harold Nichols was complaining he couldn't get back.
And just after he left, Dan Gable complained that in this big showdown of Milton Coliseum between the number one they could have come in if he wanted to.
ranked hawks and the number three ranked cyclone 2 minutes left.
First period car against the last period.
He's got to be more tired than is the last game It was an interesting moment at the way end of day, when Nate Carr got on the scales, they were winning each other out in a way out of order.
So you didn't know where was weighing in?
He got on the scales.
It went up to 558 and it was a bit of a surprise.
Throw.
Right now both boys are looking for opening, but ten done I think so far no charge by either competitor A takedown is seven near-fall points.
in another half gone and to go first period The first period car trying to make a move on his back.
of that five point Zaleski has Carr in a very very bad position with a minute and 18 and Carr's bridging violently here the pancake maneuver.
No more things ten he's got he's got a five point lead, no question about it.
more successive near-fall points.
It would appear the car is out of the danger immediately of being pinned, but it's a five point move for it.
He made for more because he's got that on board in there pretty tough with a great deficit to overcome.
and he's got that near like junior, putting a lot of pressure on him, getting his hips under control.
Nate's got the pour He's laying cards up at this point.
We're looking at him getting to some of that point.
He's holding a.
We've got two more.
so he'll be up at 177 against Perry Hummel And what a big lead.
Zaleski is piled up the Iowa fans in the crowd you can see Dan Gable on it.
going crazy because Nate Carr can't do anything down there.
Two more Yeah, ain't going to get through more here.
He got a big move was for Iowa State He's got him in that Turk, and he's really putting it out of here this year.
And without question, he's got a commanding lead at this point and he's working tough physically on top.
on that first career strategy has not worked so far.
So numerous 9 to 0 in favor of Jimmy Zaleski.
that was a difference of two and No.
Boy, what a first period he was.
And look at that Iowa bench twice in Paris.
Dan Gable.
Carr on his back has right at time and a 28 seconds But let's look at the third break to come around with Carr on his back has right at time and a 28 seconds with the with the heading and your leg But boy a body pressure body thrown by the Huskies.
They put him in trouble right now for a five point move and he picked up two more successive near-fall situations.
He leads nine zero.
Now, I'll tell you what, Pam.
Jim Zaleski pancaked him in a hurry, He sure does.
and it's an escape for Zaleski makes up ten to nothing, and he comes in on a double.
His brother Lenny won 11 to 5.
He's got a brutal look like maybe set up a cut for two more.
He set at 142 over Randy Conrad.
Oh, boy.
Well, obviously, Nate Carr, who is embarrassed to be down by ten here after going up to 158, is going to have to pull something out of the hat here.
As I said, 9 to 1.
I'm going to go in.
And I was thinking that the car was down the other way round at ten.
Gillespie Out front, ten, ten, I think.
Zaleski In on the leg NEAR-FALL He's got three and there's a one point escape on.
car got in behind but no mat points, no point I'll tell you, a 16 to 1 here.
standing position.
He must take it to the mat and with normal reaction time in order to score the two I saw Nate down behind this car, I believe, Iowa looks just as tough as they can be here tonight was when he was a freshman wrestling again, in this big showdown of Milton Coliseum between the number one ranked hawks and the number three ranked cyclone That time out here.
at this point, the husky elite ten zero.
But let's remember back in the car was on his back for the big part of that and he's putting all of his move together, four three.
He's got to be more tired than is the last game Oh, he really could.
and he's got to do a lot of wrestling to make up ten points.
To see a 16 to 3 is the score because of a car escape A warning was given.
There are two ways you may have heard by referee Daryl Henry against cars Some of the 14,500 people in Hilton Coliseum, or backing out about one minute which usually quiet for an Iowa Iowa state, may here ten done I think in favor of Jim Zaleski.
because of the way Iowa's wrestling A takedown is seven near-fall points.
Iowa State has been in here The first period and Alaska of that five point move really made the difference.
and on the lane.
Cut Nathan at the body, press the pancake maneuver.
And right now it took a lot of sap, I'm sure, away from Carr, and he caught him in two six more successive near-fall points.
And that's wrestling with a that was the first takedown for a car with a great deficit to overcome.
It's still a successful One in one point in freshman relays There it is now makes it 17 to 5.
11 to 2.
That car has to get the takedown in order to escape Nate's got the pour in the coals at this point and pick up a lot of points.
He's got a lot of pick ups breaking.
Anything a He got this single leg, but it couldn't work.
It inbounds.
There's Eddie Banach, so he'll be up at 177 against Perry Hummel We're in the last 35 seconds Yeah, you can see Dan Gable on it.
And crew are very excited, really very intense.
But he's got to be happy with the way the Hawks have gone.
Yeah, got to be happy.
He got a big move was for Iowa State to send Carr up to 158 against the West.
I'll tell you that.
But Jim can turned the tables very quickly on that first career strategy has not worked so far.
he is hard, drives the body lock throw himself, Third period 11 two to Zaleski and in the second period that was a difference of two and No.
2 to 1 it was two two actually that third and Zaleski at first, because all that time is in here, fall And I'll tell you, Solecki is tonight.
where he had to bring it.
Carr on his back has right at time and a 28 seconds When is the last time they car was gave up?
20. easy so let's be on top and he's rocking the boat again.
And there it is, a big win for Jim Zaleski, 25 I don't believe it.
Yes, yes he got one.
He has just managed to make that move to his heart's content for Iowa, and then the match linked up on top.
He's working real tough.
Is he?
In fact, he's got a superior decision going right now.
He sure does.
Riding to Let's take a moment for our station ID.
jams Alaska.
His brother Lenny won 11 to 5.
He set at 142 over Randy Conrad.
We'll go ahead and put it up there.
Mary Davis won at eight feet four zero.
Robert Otto at 26, Kerber upset Gibbons at 34.
And boy, that things turn We'll go ahead and put it up there.
out hands up.
But he picks him up and puts him to the mat.
Carr comes back up there's a body lock he puts call back to the mat and on his shoulders for the three point the big things they're out of need it 158 and it ain't.
NEAR-FALL He's got three and there's a one point escape on.
I thought it would be a more I'll tell you, a 16 to 1 here.
Oh, wait, you're tussling with bigger, stronger kids.
The last time I saw Nate down behind this car, I believe, was when he was a freshman wrestling again, He had two more near-fall sets in the last period, Andy Ryan of Wisconsin, who was so good on his feet that he could take him down almost anytime he wanted to.
That time out here.
Boy, I'll tell you, this is the one that's still the cyclone crowd.
While Jim Jim Zaleski, as just a wrestling bender's like, well, tonight Actually, out of those 20 points, Dave Jim Zaleski, and he's putting all of his move together, I just don't think he could look much better.
Oh, he really could.
that official.
Yeah.
He's in there in a tough way.
To see a 16 to 3 is the score because of a car escape stunned as Iowa is rolling it up on Iowa State and the team scores 12 to 3.
Some of the 14,500 people in Hilton Coliseum, This is Iowa, 17 in the cyclones, three which usually quiet for an Iowa Iowa state, may here after Jim Zaleski really put it to Nate Carr because of the way Iowa's wrestling Iowa State has been in here after Jim Zaleski really put it to Nate Carr and Alaska has been solid and powerful of cars and on the lane.
came in after two And that's true.
And then after was came in after two 16 to 5. with boy takedown, he was in no question about it, It's still a potential 16 to 5.
But it's still because of the riding time situation.
It's still a successful and Carr has to get the takedown in order to escape superior decision because of that.
There it is now makes it 17 to 5.
That car has to get the takedown in order to escape a superior decision against him, which means five, ten points.
difference of 12 or more?
Anything a difference of 12 or more?
and it's an important move here the car can make, We're in the last 35 seconds and that's something and it's an important move here the car can make, and that's something tough here and there, you know, And two more.
well, I'll tell you, the left can really wrestle tough here.
Well, I'll tell what they try And there's two more and two more.
He's got his superior.
Well, I'll tell what.
Nate tried to get in there with that bear hug.
I'll tell you that.
You can see here, I think the difference between 150 and £158 of two good wrestlers, But he got off his face in the first Solecki, he is hard, drives the body lock throw himself, but he got off his face in the first Solecki, kept the pressure on him and took the two himself.
Not too many people are going to wrestle Nate in that situation.
And I'll tell you, Solecki is tonight.
Solecki is tough.
He looks terrific, 19 to 5.
And he's going to get a writing time point.
When is the last time they car was gave up?
20.
And there it is, a big win for Jim Zaleski, 25 25.
And it is for Iowa, and then the match a superior 25.
And it is 15 for Iowa, three for Iowa State.
a soft period decision, 15 for Iowa, three for Iowa State.
This is the Iowa Public Broadcasting Network.
Let's take a moment for our station ID.
We'll go ahead and put it up there.
This is the Iowa Public Broadcasting Network.
We'll go ahead and put it up there.
Jim Brown of Miami, Florida.
And the Iowa State crowd is stunned here at what's going on so far.
Iowa, one minute left in the first three, Well, I'm sure they expected big things there.
A out of need it 158 And I thought it would be a more A lot of different tie ups to set up a much more competitive bout than it was.
But Let's face it, whenever we get a jump up.
Oh, wait, you're tussling with bigger, stronger kids.
good position for the two off of him.
ZALESKI At nine points in the first period, a takedown, he had three near-fall.
He had two more near-fall sets in the last period, Nate Carr got a takedown in the second and a takedown in the third.
Actually, out of those 20 points, Dave Jim Zaleski It sets up a situation for the other took down At no point get it out of bounds.
a crucial official At no point get it out of bounds.
and this crowd at Hilton Coliseum is sitting here stunned.
Iowa is rolling it up on Iowa State in what was expected to be much closer at this time.
if both of these boys are strong It is Iowa 17 and the cyclones three after Jim Zaleski really put it to Nate card 22 five the boys country is strong enough to stave off and amazing show there by Jim Zaleski who has tried again.
some of that and it could work in reverse direction.
Time will be tougher at 158 that Nate is he's bigger and lot stronger and that way if he wrestled that tough at the Nationals, he'll have a good shot at that national title.
You bet he will.
Ricky Stuart and Ricky Stuart.
In fact, he's beaten Ricky Stuart already once.
As we said, Zaleski had only two takedowns in the whole match and he had a zillion there.
Hall He'll go up first.
17, two, three.
Here we are, 67.
Dave Fitzgerald of Iowa against Kim Brown of Iowa State, One is malfunctioning and he can't Eric Davis Gerald has had a terrific year.
He's only lost three times in 23 matches.
He is a senior from West Davenport.
Okay.
He beat Tom Pickard in the last out in Iowa City.
not running up above oak stay set top.
Tim Brown was at 158.
Rather interesting.
You know, you have a young man there now but they are keeping it on a separate clock.
as good as Dave Fitzgerald here.
And Tim Brown is out and up his knees now.
He doesn't get a lot of the publicity and notoriety as some of the others.
But if you're wrestling with such a talent that the other teammates have, Well, that's been Tim Brown's weakness that's understandable.
The timing of this.
Dave Fitzgerald is a very good wrestler with only three losses.
That's right.
He's always been tough on his feet.
That's got to be super for the competition.
They compete against very strong.
They're wrestling in the sights Is Jay Robinson part of this?
of the 1982 National Championships center at the Hilton Coliseum.
Brown is a beautiful Jason, with his experience, he was an outstanding with a pretty good technician.
Kim Brown is if he stays with it, he can always wrestle tough.
international competition as well as His biggest problem is in the down position just go from 3 to 1 leads go two on one.
He's in again, but didn't finish the move And they are with Gerald wisely.
Got the hips back.
Fitzgerald is very strong.
I'm not sure that Tim Brown wants to do that.
I'm not either.
And he wasn't either.
As a matter of fact, he went to the leg a bit at the half.
17 to 3 meet And I would think that watching Jim Russell before, he'll have to get a get out in front here on his feet because in the down position he's not the wrestling as well as perhaps closely contested three one favorite Brown Iowa state.
capable of He drops it on a single, Fitzgerald has had 19 big wins this year and I'm sure that he's He's got the Whizzer on he's looking for another one tonight.
Brown now and he gets in the hip space left Jim Brown of Miami, Florida.
Hey Fitzgerald, as I said, from Davenport, Iowa, one minute left in the first three, of course, should've won Brown out in front That's looking for an opening.
A lot of different tie ups to set up from that center position.
This boy looking for an opening where he can get good penetration, good position for the two off of him.
On Paul on Dirk Drag Ed Chuck's This time it's won by Fitzgerald right there.
body throws What a turn.
the least little mistake They locked up across the back and Fitzgerald wins by a falls of either one.
It sets up a situation for the other with what seemed 2 minutes and here in that bear hug situation again.
And Brown won it, but I think he was out of bounds.
At no point get it out of bounds.
And he puts Brown to his back and he's got him tight I don't know if he want to throw with Fitzgerald to say he does, but It's all it takes both shoulders to the mat for one second.
if both of these boys are strong and I would venture to say the last two have good position to get their throw, otherwise the those big body throws, you can work them the boys country is strong enough to stave off some of that and it could work in reverse direction.
They sure can add Fitzgerald, a happy man here because Iowa End of the period.
Little duck under a champ lightning in the stall it's going fall against this girl has really been cruising in this big duel meet at Iowa State.
got to wrestle her last night But both boys were tussling, upper body moves.
And end of the period Joyce Joyce All right.
Fitzgerald gets his choice left top second period.
He'll go up first.
Pressure is down on him.
There's your ball.
I like Tim Brown.
I'll go down.
This is sport.
One is malfunctioning and he can't and a little there of the Iowa State bench area.
I don't don't know the running time.
The score is one or two to.
One.
Okay green I second period I'll keep you posted on.
and it's Iowa 23 and a cyclones three Okay.
I don't know it no I don't think it's an it's not running up above oak stay set top.
and we have the three last matches to go Yeah.
Apparently we are having trouble writing times.
The clock's not working on writing time, but they are keeping it on a separate clock.
And Tim Brown is out and up his knees now.
the national champion at this weight Looked like he was going to fire him for a double, but Fitzgerald blocked off underneath.
and they wrestle twice.
Well, that's been Tim Brown's weakness this year for Iowa State is on the bottom end.
He learned to get out.
He could do very well.
That's right.
He's always been tough on his feet.
He's a good technician.
But that down position has been his weakness, as you say, Duck.
But not on that move there.
Is Jay Robinson part of this?
Two was the match results of this one Well, I'd say monumentally successful Iowa program.
Yes.
And then in the Midlands it was eight to nothing All right.
Ready, Jason, with his experience, he was an outstanding wrestler himself, of course, Almost a good technician on his feet international competition as well as collegiate go from 3 to 1 leads and a half to go in a second period.
His record pretty well indicates that so.
And they are tied up across the back again, keeping the hips back, looking for a throw.
and there have been some here tonight.
No action there.
First up, stalemate.
Boy, it's a 17 to 3 meet I don't think anybody except maybe the Iowa State, one at 150 and that's been it.
they could make it 23 to 3 after £167.
This match right here is being pretty closely contested three one favorite Brown Iowa state.
And they have He drops it on a single, but Fitzgerald tries to move it around behind.
They're still looking for the takedown.
He's got the Whizzer on Brown now and he gets in the hip space left Carl, however, at least did not indicate so.
1.1 more solid on the ground.
Eddie Banach and Harry Hall That's half a takedown, I guess.
I guess so.
That's met a 25 to go first.
what I won.
Tim Brown leads calling call and he's won before this time it was a penalty point.
So Brown now leads 4 to 1 again, locked up across the back this time.
This time it's won by Fitzgerald right there.
He lost to Mark Schultz down in Oklahoma, Holy cow.
What a turn.
What a turn.
They locked up across the back and Fitzgerald wins by a falls £167 champion at the with what seemed 2 minutes and Nationals.
all of make it 5 minutes and 21 seconds One of those pushing and shoving.
Here it is and lock it both for the lock.
Here's the body throw right there by Fitzgerald And he puts Brown to his back and he's got him tight lock in there tight end.
There's the fall.
One second fall off.
It's all it takes both shoulders to the mat for one second.
And in fact, Tim Brown is hurt the way he went down.
Both guys cut here.
Cut!
We were talking about whether We've got to cut on the ice.
those big body throws, you can work them and they can go against you just as easily.
They sure can add Fitzgerald, a happy man here because Iowa has really been cruising in this big duel meet at Iowa State.
So now it's Well, Brown had the lead here, you know, in this match.
But both boys were tussling, upper body moves.
And Previously, I didn't see the signal.
here it is right here, takes him off his face, gets him off his feet, which is the man.
Notice how he got that arm lock?
Got beat Chest to chest.
Pressure is down on him.
There's your ball.
And of course, Brown was slightly injured in the process and a little there of the Iowa State bench area.
get a lift, get him off face and make sure 521 was the time of that ball you're not.
Do and it's Iowa 23 and a cyclones three you're not.
Do and we have the three last matches to go you're not.
Do and Iowa State has very little room here to make it respectable.
Oh boy, Oh does You're seeing Ed Banach now He hasn't given either yet, but he's going to get the one the national champion at this weight twice national champion against Perry Humble lost control one.
and they wrestle twice.
Manik has won twice this year.
But when you start sticking six and five and four, three, four, there on the colors.
six, five and fourth, 13 points up there on the scoreboard, they had a pretty fast to to evaluate the teams he's been up against this year and.
the four.
Two was the match results of this one the last time they met, I believe.
Was it not there?
Yes.
And then in the Midlands it was eight to nothing There are so many others, for you.
Almost a good technician on his feet Iowa State at Banex.
A good technician in.
He's very strong.
He's a pinner, without question.
His record pretty well indicates that so.
own aspects and qualities that make them what they are.
Well, you talk about surprises in the Iowa Iowa State Three, two.
Right?
Right.
and there have been some here tonight.
But I'd say that the surprise is the distance and the score, even though everybody know that Iowa had that kind of power.
I'm a lead lead up to takedown But when I said Milton Coliseum, I don't think anybody except maybe the I'll start on top because one of him Hawks themselves figured they could make it 23 to 3 after £167.
I forget the period in the down position And they have right in there real tough now with a deep waist neither guy wrestling.
Both guys need to wrestle now up here is going to do it now.
Let's wrestle them low.
Neither one very aggressive on their feet.
He did not give all in.
Carl, however, at least did not indicate so.
when you're putting a lot of pressure up Inactivity got a new start.
This is Eddie Banach and Harry Hall steel top rate of two met a 25 to go first.
Korea no score 16 pins in 1980 16 and 81.
A lot of parents, 32, told me for advantage two time national champion.
136 left 136 set top I have counted them up this year.
He's won 24 matches out of 25.
He lost to Mark Schultz down in Oklahoma, fourth in the Nationals and second in the National ten tonight on a last second takedown to Mark Schultz, last year's £167 champion at the That's one of the first period I might say.
Nationals.
Harry Hummel was only lost two times this year.
One of those pushing and shoving.
That's all we're doing, gentlemen.
We shouldn't go back.
Nobody shouldn't tried.
Eddie Mannix got a cut on his nose here and the National and take a look at it when we get a chance.
He's got some blood to, and now in his junior year looking for a chance to improve well, 45 seconds.
There's no action, gentlemen.
Both guys cut here.
Cut!
Now a minute to go Hilton Coliseum We've got to cut on the ice.
No, I got to, Bruiser.
All right, so let's wipe him off.
Let's wipe it off.
Okay, well, wiping off the blood on the nose, We're just hanging on signings one here.
he did previously.
One both wrestlers.
And now he penalized Paul.
So now it's really a 1 to 1 match.
Okay.
Previously, I didn't see the signal.
Both hands went up, but the fist were not double up for him to keep falling.
That's why we didn't catch it.
I see.
Hobbling on the leg.
And you got a chance to see Eddie Bennett counter here.
Keep in mind, Bennington penalized, right?
You've got to get a lift with it, perhaps get through with it, If he gets penalized again, it's a two pointer Maybe turn it into a double.
Here he is going to the double if he can get spin through it, get a lift, get him off face and make sure in Iowa too and Hummels trying to avoid back points.
you're not.
Do but at the one point a staple for know how bad it is out.
but at the one point a staple for What are we going to call it?
One or two?
We don't know yet.
He hasn't given either yet, but he's going to get the one as you're watching this as it is right here.
potentially dangerous lost control one.
It's 3 to 2.
Hammer 2 to 1.
I'm an lost control.
So a choice at one point, as did four medics there on the colors.
Well, earlier we asked to evaluate the teams he's been up against this year and.
Yeah.
I'd have to say that his head, his hip, like Oklahoma, We've got another 2 minutes to wrestle has a very talented team.
two really great athletes out there, both of them five.
Maybe it's not as disciplined as I was There are so many others, you know, Oklahoma State or whatever, but they do have a lot of talent.
Iowa State may not have all the talent in Oklahoma has, but they're highly disciplined and they're very good technicians.
And, Last year he'll be up at heavyweight you know, they got their own aspects and qualities that make them what they are.
And as good as the penalty to it should be.
Three, two.
Right?
Right.
That was Eddie Banach.
There was some promising star penalty.
Each had a one referee tip that it was only three to facing me.
That's my fault.
I'm a lead lead up to takedown and then a penalty point against each one of them advantage.
I'll start on top because one of him I forget the period in the down position I don't know if he can bend.
start of that tough right back right in there real tough now with a deep waist jamming in behind that near arm, barring it when possible, So it's for all practical purposes of a panic win here.
a lot of pressure in the upper part of the body If it stays the way it is.
and £177 is pretty tough when you're putting a lot of pressure up on top and your pressure and forcing it on your opponent.
Banach has This is no takedowns yet, but he got a near fall.
center Here comes a takedown for Eddie Bauer.
steel top rate of two Just cut Perry's head down, Iowa leads.
Manik Ride.
I get set right away.
136 left 136 set top And that makes it seven five with a minute and 15 to go.
9710 and two career record for Hummel And he has riding time a role for Hummel.
fourth in the Nationals and second in the National Thanks that all by Hummel but countered by Bennett that I believe that's the first takedown by Hummel this year against Bennett That's one of the first period I might say.
You're repeating again here that Hummel was second as a He spun around behind and turn it into a two point freshman and fourth as a sophomore maneuver, blocking off the arms as he moves around behind.
and the National My impression is that Eddie Banach is is a and now in his junior year looking for a chance to improve upon both of those places that riding real tough there.
Now a minute to go Hilton Coliseum Needless to say, he still has the power and can use it.
here where are these wrestlers?
Only back for the Nationals in the second week of March.
We're just hanging on signings one here.
A point for Hummel that was just riding on top and he did build up enough time for riding time, which is in his favor at this point.
But he was penalized for doing only that riding and not improving his position on top.
So Telmo now lead for two.
and putting a lot of pressure on the upper part of the body.
Keep in mind, Bennington penalized, right?
If he gets penalized again, it's a two pointer through the group.
We've seen him do a lot of fancy things that are heats in Iowa too and Hummels trying to avoid back points.
He did.
But here comes Banach again and it is going to be a two point near-fall but at the one point a staple for just hanging That's one right?
almost makes it five two for Hummel there's a sky high Got to be two.
Got to be two.
as you're watching this as it is right here.
The referee doesn't know it yet.
There it comes.
He's got that arm ball over there in the rear cross maneuver.
He tips Perry up for the two.
But Perry wisely came on through for the one placed off 20 seconds to go second period.
It's a 5 to 4 match.
Hummel leads.
he's been penalized through time for you.
Yeah.
And keep in mind, we're only in the second period.
We've got another 2 minutes to wrestle It's a two pointer then.
two really great athletes out there, both of them five.
is going to want to talk to him about just hanging You makes a difference when you're have the ability to put anybody on his back I'm sure that can't Coach Gable if gets the other man to get those extra points high.
It's tough for there is low Banach I think maybe the right call was made.
Riders national champion and Big Ten.
Last year he'll be up at heavyweight against Wayne Cole last period school.
He wants to go on the clock.
I don't know the show a little something this year.
He got embarrassed, as you know, last year on the line Manik has riding time.
up for by one of that national championship.
But he'd like to add frosting I'm sure, this year right here.
That's my fault.
Tries to me stay set.
if Hummel gets out, it's a draw Well I would like to erase that writing time if he can.
It's a minute.
35 for Banach and 11 for Hummel.
No, no, no.
I don't know if he can bend.
It comes up if he can face off right out.
All right, it's eight two, seven, Five, five.
He keeps his writing time.
So it's for all practical purposes of a panic win here.
If it stays the way it is.
That's right on the feet.
Eddie Bennett has riding time Banach has no takedowns yet, but he got a near fall.
Hummel has one takedown.
Here comes a takedown for Eddie Bauer.
there made a lot of difference with riding time.
Nip down counter.
Just cut Perry's head down, cut him off in a face and float around behind for two.
So 881 takedown apiece.
Manik And that makes it seven five with a minute and 15 to go.
And he has riding time a role for Hummel.
And it works.
Tell him It's a team score.
Now Break easy, Here he sits out, Harry.
How old are you?
Carbondale.
Let's see that, Harry.
There's the move, not Perry down on the head too.
He spun around behind and turn it into a two point maneuver, blocking off the arms as he moves around behind.
Then in the middle of that it would have been two.
I don't move now.
I set top.
My impression is that Eddie Banach is is a Mike Mann against Kate Bush beat Bush much more technically proficient wrestler than he was, let's say, when went to Iowa.
Fans saw him two years ago, I think definitely saw he used to rely more on his strength and power than than he does now.
These young men have wrestled a number of times Needless to say, he still has the power and can use it.
But he he he's a he's a lot of the technique to go along with that power, which makes him just that much greater.
A wrestler, £190 class that we've seen so much very strong wrestler.
agree with that £180 class is the toughest weight It's 7 to 5, really.
It's a three point lead because of that riding time.
And Hummel is going for the edge of the mat, but he's really riding on top right now and he's riding tough, but he's not improving.
His position at this point is he's borrowing that near arm and putting a lot of pressure on the upper part of the body.
Taking away any moves from Hummel on the bottom.
But he's got to improve that position on top.
Wrestled a good match.
And Gable and his staff you got that close to the talent.
are looking.
They're looking satisfied.
I'll Tell you those going sit out and turn in almost 4 to 1 And then we can invent Chris activity out there in the map here's just hanging That's one right?
And then we can invent Chris activity out there in the map Right.
Got to be two.
Got to be two.
Got to be two.
We're in the second minute of the three minute first period.
Now it's two here.
The referee doesn't know it yet.
It looks as if.
That drawing you saw was only the second as I go.
the referee is going to come over and be told that he's been penalized through time for you.
That's easy to forget.
One, that's his second one darkies 321400621. that's just there.
It's a two pointer then.
Right.
Two.
And I'm sure Dan Gable is going to want to talk to him about just hanging these guys, basically.
But I'll watch it.
I'm sure that can't Coach Gable if gets the other man just basically going they're not doing anything.
But You heard the referee prior to that time giving the the I think maybe the right call was made.
That's a tough call to make against anyone.
to determine activity or inactivity.
Was riding on top 21 seconds to go at seven seven but Manik has riding time.
Then Lenny Zaleski beat Conrad 11 to 5, Cruz Is it Kessler, Iowa State's first four, and then a tie?
Is it up?
And he ran into a bear, a if Hummel gets out, it's a draw tough body, throw, no names out or he's out and he might have to go.
of body, throw by Bush here.
No, no, no.
Almost up or close.
All right, it's eight two, seven, 7 seconds left to win here for these two men.
We didn't get to see it all, but the knee of Bush went out Hummel almost fought near that math head and they had more math face.
It would have been that it looks like a great match.
However, a great match.
Eddie Bennett has riding time Jim Zaleski beat Nate Carr at 158 20 to 5. and it's a draw 15 or 16 near-fall points after a big move in the first period.
and a minus four penalty points in there made a lot of difference with riding time.
And then Dave Fitzgerald, trailing at the time for a one, In fact, they made all the difference.
So 881 takedown apiece.
Manik had a near-fall shake hands and there were two escapes.
They shake hands.
It's a draw in the penultimate match 190 fans switch it up.
25 to 5.
It's a team score.
Now Let's go let's look at them.
Okay, we'll see them move here.
Here he sits out, turns in the ahead face on kicks out.
There's your one wasabi quickly hustles around behind so we don't see the finish of that move But they both went on him out almost turn it into two hander.
Then in the middle of that it would have been two.
in favor of the Hawks, it's understandable Here we are, £190.
Mike Mann against Kate Bush beat Bush Price, great, terrific showing by the Hawks here tonight.
Easy 19 and five this year.
Mike Mann is 26 three, the Midlands champion.
Right now.
These young men have wrestled a number of times push starts in the and they've always been close to the Iowa state bench just for a second.
out of that powerful £190 class that we've seen so much this year that we'd have to I think everyone would have to agree with that £180 class is the toughest weight class in the country as far as the number of personnel.
But as well.
the really tough guys, at least nine good 180. conference championships leading to the national title Eddie Bennett unhappy about what happened there at £177.
look for that escape.
I thought very humble.
Wrestled a good match.
look for that escape.
So glad you got that close to the talent.
It's was just so tough to at this point that I thought there might be easy.
wrestle.
It's wrestle.
Got to determine just who who should and who should win.
But those darling calls have to be made.
And then we can invent Chris activity out there in the map 130 to go in the second period.
back to the center.
Now Bush has got that double underhook situation.
We're in the second minute of the three minute first period.
So I just can't pick my Iowa against Iowa State.
And the hawks have really stuck out to the cyclones so far.
situation and doesn't want Bush to come in underneath That drawing you saw was only the second as I go.
Oh, the first things are true is that Marty Kessler at 150. where he can get a body throw of one kind or another.
Larry Davis darkies 321400621.
Wrestling 111 for you.
Jeff Kerber upset the national champion Jim Gibbons for a while.
Very good doing it.
Here comes the double stall warning both boys, one four 2 to 1 score.
calling now.
No activity going on up there.
You heard the referee prior to that time giving the the He had an escape to go with a penalty verbal count.
You got up to 15 seconds there.
And he uses that as a guideline to determine activity or inactivity.
And there was no activity.
Both boys got the warning call.
We're talking about 142.
Then Lenny Zaleski beat Conrad 11 to 5, Cruz once they get a hot streak going, it doesn't take a mike Kessler, Iowa State's first four, and then And I think where Nate Carr went up to £158, he ran into a bear, a a very good year, tough body, throw, no names out And I think that wrestling style of wrestling what run next of body, throw by Bush here.
penalized the second time the next time as to I'll say right now, there it is, a lateral drop.
And he thought man on his back almost, turn it into to watch the knee here closely.
We didn't get to see it all, but the knee of Bush went out for the supporting part for both of us.
There's a lot of arms that come back to the middle neutral position.
No point score.
Jim Zaleski beat Nate Carr at 158 20 to 5. a disqualification somewhere here on penalty point.
He had about 16, 15 or 16 near-fall points after a big move in the first period.
all of a sudden it makes a little difference And then Dave Fitzgerald, trailing at the time for a one, We have only 4 seconds to go here caught Tim Brown and finish it Wham!
Just like that easy in a throw break Easy guys went to 177.
We had the draw.
You just saw a mannequin hobble and here we are in the penultimate match 190 fans switch it up.
Now this time man goes down.
Let's go 14,507 The bush at 38 seconds people at this Hilton Auditorium at Coliseum.
And they're most of them are cycling fans and they're most upset and they're rather quiet.
Well, at this point, with a 25 five margin He may yet in favor of the Hawks, it's understandable The trouble is here that.
that some great matches, though.
Doug Price, great, terrific showing by the Hawks here tonight.
There's the end of the first period just On the other hand, down came down take it big But he gets the escape at three, three, break.
push starts in the bottom position that is going over to the Iowa state bench just for a second.
the writing time continued to mount for Bush, Hey, Bush, get up from that.
Something will kick high school, start winning read three score is zero zero second period set top It's more he's got an escape and each for that as well.
The next event for both of these teams are the the referee's conference championships leading to the national title pushes out 8 seconds I another Somebody has got to make a shot look for that escape.
make it look like a shot.
Not quite as much activity in this match at this point that I thought there might be easy.
and I'll tell you any more and let me take us over.
What do we say about momentum earlier?
Let's get some wrestling going on right here.
It does make a difference.
There's been nothing but Iowa No activity out this is a single shot, 130 to go in the second period.
Now Bush has got that double underhook situation.
So I just can't pick my Unlike takedown by man, hips down and back and it breaks that underhook well executed, situation and doesn't want Bush to come in underneath Often.
too far, getting a position where he can get a body throw of one kind or another.
right now without it.
No wrestling 21 either, guys.
Wrestling 111 for you.
Come on, Alex Russell, guys, both boys now been penalized for stalling long time.
There'll be no riding time advantage for either man.
2 to 1 score.
Bush.
He had an escape to go with a penalty You got an Iowa leads 25 to 5, and the team score Lot of good night in the country column CHEERING Yes I'm sure any one of those Greg Hawkins will share those hundred and £80 are capable of winning that national championship.
You know, once they get a hot streak going, it doesn't take a mike Seven five is the score.
Myers of you.
And I think Thomas of Oklahoma, although he's way been having a very good year, Man puts Bush back to the mat.
30 seconds to go second period.
And I think that wrestling style of wrestling what run next Mikey front to step across now boy, this for boy is it Bush next time that both have been penalized the second time the next time as to is out it's 7 to 6 take down would win it for him likewise pay to have to go yet let's wrestle.
And the referee just tells them both we've got a period to have to go yet.
Let's get wrestling.
Go.
Somebody is going to have to adjust the routine here a little bit.
So either that or we're we're going to get a disqualification somewhere here on penalty point.
that man could get right now is some offense.
Oh, my God.
When you start giving two points for the stalling call, Is he 8 seconds to go.
all of a sudden it makes a little difference in the reflection of that match.
to be a little cages.
As the scores come composed.
We have only 4 seconds to go here in the second period of 190.
It just has been kind of a lackluster match year 7 to 6, no riding time, end of the last period.
most of penalty points.
Now this time man goes down.
You had top trailing by one and there's no running time.
my man who is the second cyclone to win.
The bush at 38 seconds my man who is the second cyclone to win.
doesn't top.
on a seven or six win and people are still sticking around.
Oh, he steps across and almost turning into two.
They want to watch move back against Wayne Cole.
He may yet got the leg.
When there's Wayne Cole, The trouble is here that.
It was 11 to 1 in favor of Cole Oh, he step it across.
Oh yes he did before the closing bell.
On the other hand, he got on his back in that situation.
But he gets the escape at three, three, break.
And Lou Banach is the defending national champion at this way.
Got to say, as long as that situation remained unresolved, the writing time continued to mount for Bush, although it was 18 seconds all together.
I and comes back on comes on top of the two points up.
read three score to it either goes escape or reverse.
That's the way it is.
It's more he's got an escape and each for that penalty point However, it comes out, they're fun.
the referee's counting on him again But then it turned the tables.
somebody's got to be shooting for takedown.
Somebody has got to make a shot or at least make it make it look like a shot.
to to panic out in front.
And next time at the 2.0, yes, nothing to do at this point is to wrestle is coming and I'll tell you any more and let me take us over.
from the nuclear position without tying up, Let's get some wrestling going on right here.
No activity out this is a single shot, my man for about 6 to 1 top.
didn't stay with it, wasn't able to finish.
It was blocked off.
Count it over.
Unlike takedown by man, well executed, because he had a lot of time here to miss the first period.
straight, nice takedown, good technique.
Often.
There he is right now without it.
You see how a drug that I'm through at 36 moves around behind for the two point he takes a hit on it, comes out, stands up.
quick short drag Armdrag makes it 7 to 536 seconds to go.
There'll be no riding time advantage for either man.
I mean, tip it off.
You got new blood over here on this side coming.
Get up three feet.
You got an Iowa leads 25 to 5, and the team score But it came back a lot of a lot of time 25 to 46 seconds.

36 seconds left in the third period.
I get set.
All right.
We got 36 seconds.
Seven five is the score.
Green tap.
And neither man dares to stall.
a lot of time not 15 Man puts Bush back to the mat.
The bush hands back up, throws the wizard over hook.
He's got it pretty tight right now.
I tell you, when he gets in that wizard Mikey front to step across now boy, this for boy is it Bush He's got it pretty tight right now.
is out it's 7 to 6 take down would win it for him likewise He's got it pretty tight right now.
in the same finishing in the position they're in a win for man so he's got to be careful not to get taken down and Bush has got to have the takedown He's got it pretty tight right now.
and he doesn't dare stall because right now the best offense defense that man could get right now is some offense.
And that's just what he's doing.
Is he 8 seconds to go.
He's got it pretty tight right now.
Now's the time for a man to be a little cages.
He's got it pretty tight right now.
It's going to be man.
There it is, 7 to 6, no riding time, He's got it pretty tight right now.
most of penalty points.
But the takedown was the difference on that Armdrag you see the people at Hilton Coliseum applauding my man who is the second cyclone to win.
He's got it pretty tight right now.
That makes it 25 to 8 There's Wayne Cole.
on a seven or six win and people are still sticking around.
They want to watch move back against Wayne Cole.
when Lou Banach turned Cole over and pinned it.
There's a few of them going up, but not very many.
when Lou Banach turned Cole over and pinned it.
When there's Wayne Cole, they first match in Iowa City with something.
It was 11 to 1 in favor of Cole national champion at this weight.
when Lou Banach turned Cole over and pin it.
and liquidity.
And Lou Banach is the defending national champion at this way.
But Cole comes up for one with a stand up and game.
And there's Cole in that leg just the way it was in the.
they don't wrestle a typical heavyweight match.
But notice how he reversed the situation and comes back on comes on top of the two points up.
But Cole coming up for one with a stand up and game.
Well, I'll tell you the thing about these two they don't wrestle a typical heavyweight match.
No, they don't.
However, it comes out, they're fun.
Oh, right after that thing, the lady just reached in and took it.
But then it turned the tables.
He got the takedown himself and tried from the nuclear position without tying up.
to to panic out in front.
2 to 1, panic out in front.
A Cole starts on top And there's nothing for Cole to do at this point is to wrestle the way he started off going after those takedown from the nuclear position without tying up.
and it turns him Oh, there.
Fall on his back.
That's good.
The if not he got back points to spar points over for bad luck knowledge 6 to 1 top Reversal 17. thought he was going to end it right there the way it went because he had a lot of time here to get first period.
Manik has to take three takedowns.
So he's got to.
All right.
He's got a lot to work on.
Cole's miracle's got to be standing up and get moving off of this.
Or it could be trouble and a reversal makes it 17. get sucked back in that situation.
There.
He takes he takes a hit on Bennett, comes out, He was at the beginning of that first period.
ends up he's got one That took a lot of a lot out of him.
6 to 2 Hey.
And then come he's got almost at the back with the authority that you'd like to see someone All right.
Too hard.
He should have taken the two point takedown and but it came back a lot of power, a lot of time He's so strong, but he's got the moves too, and that he's got the body press, he's got the arm bar now.
And it looks like he might might finish it.
He's got him pretty tight a lot of time.
All kinds of in a minute.
22 seconds left in this the first period.
And he's got Cole in some real trouble a lot of time, not 15 body breath, chest to chest.
He's got it pretty tight right now.
All he has to do is laying there and then he looks like Cole.
Maybe 50 seconds to go.
he's got it pretty tough.
I don't know.
Isn't able to come out of there or not.
He's fighting it off to go him.
Now comes the reverse half Nelson by Baron it he's got that here on Bart over there Cole pivots on throws like through look like he's going to come out He did and he's got a lot of time, 35 seconds.
Near-Fall makes it 11 to 2 but he got this deep out of it.
I do believe?
Yes.
and he's he's covering him like a blanket right now.
And three, he fought off of that back courageously cause Benny had him in some real trouble.
And a big win ending a big meet victory for the Hawkeyes.
The 11 to 3 is the score.
And a big win ending a big meet victory for the Hawkeyes.
Cole Wade stepped on a scale today of £254.
Vanek 223. to go with 5 minutes and 34 seconds I just don't think he should wade in there in that.
Manik Lock up like that, him backing out.
So you got to stay away from And that's a big win for the Hawkeyes.
Al warning against a call for backing out.
Oh, they just look super tough.
I'll start to show caution.
You can start to have caution on panic next time.
That be a match point against.
So both points have violations of the cost them a match point the next time.
If they're doing it, then we're still in the first period.
Go up on the Iowa scoreboard, 31 to 8 Manek pins.
That's right.
27 seconds left and that's the first period right now.
Defending national champion heavyweight Lovato back out there against Wayne Cole.
And there you see a happy, herky high I'll bet it gets a single looked like Wayne is going to quit wrestling there for a moment in.
The first panic taking advantage and the takedown.
He got the armbar up front that makes it 33. an amazing victory here for Iowa, He's trying to get New York.
He doesn't have enough time getting stocked up for the Nationals to point it.
That makes it 15 to 3 in two point NEARFALL They were super tough tonight.
Well, I'll tell you, that was a long first call.
It sure was joyous.
And yet, you know, he wrestles well enough, a time that time that he could get some big points for the cyclone.
Decisions at 134 will stop with Kerber Right now, I think he's a little fatigued because Kerber upset national champion Jim Gibbons.
many talented enough trouble on his back that he's had a fight.
15 three takes a lot of energy.
Second, very Santa has a minute and 26 seconds of riding time.
A Cole starts on top 25 to 18 score.
The Hawks have it wrapped up and it turns him Banach and Perry Hummel at 199, the winner over Pete Bush.
on the edge of the mat.
How bad it is inside.
Looks like he's out.
He may turn this into two.
Yes, he will.
And that was the second victory, the second one.

The three way.
Wrestling is tough.
He was at the beginning of that first period.
I'm sure he's tired.
It was all too big on the back for that long.
That took a lot of a lot out of him.
There's a sit out the turn in but he's not making those moves with the authority that you'd like to see someone make the good to get the points and couldn't sustain it.
He started to move and Vanek countered, and that was it.
some of the memories of this year with us Hispanic is tough.
He's so strong, but he's got the moves too, and some of the memories of this year with us he capitalizes on some of the memories of this year with us the mistakes of his opponent.
He's gonna lose trying to tip him here for more back points.
No Not yet.
Not yet.
Not yet.
You'll see the referee's hand move if he does go on a one point escape for Cole, 17 for Manek.
Looks like he might want to take the head and leg there for a fatal maneuver.
But some of the memories of this year with us Cole sees that off.
some of the memories of this year with us 50 seconds to go.
Second period some of the memories of this year with us and bang, that's a big takedown.
And this could be trouble because who's got him on his back again?
I think it looks really like a lot of trouble here.
Now, he got the three pointer and he's got a lot of time, 35 seconds.
But the body press on him and he's he's covering him like a blanket right now.
some of the memories of this year with us You can see the official trying to watch.
