Historically, the biggest upsets in college wrestling happen when Iowa meets Iowa State and watch it.
And it's always said all the time, that crowd.
Holy mackerel.
Between the two teams, they've won 21 national championships and the talent of these squads always seems to shine when they face each other on the mat.
Today's number one ranked Iowa Hawkeyes are led by legendary head coach Dan Gable.
Some have called this squad the best Hawkeye team ever, with four number one ranked wrestlers in the lineup, including NCAA champion Joel Sharon at £180 and two time NCAA champion Lincoln McElroy at 150.
And against US power of Iowa come the young and talented number four ranked Iowa State cyclones under the tutelage of third year head coach Bobby Douglas.
The team has put together a series of outstanding dual meet performances, including a big win, a huge win over last year's NCAA champions, the Oklahoma State Cowboys.
Nobody is going to push this team around.
Their top ranked wrestlers include all American.
Derek Mounts here at £142.
And number three, ranked Dwight Henson at 126.
Anything could happen and probably will in this intrastate battle for state bragging rights.
It's Iowa taking on Iowa State.
Coming up next on college wrestling from Hilton Coliseum in Ames, Iowa.
Iowa public television sports brings you college wrestling as the Iowa Hawkeyes take on the Iowa State cyclones.
Hello, I'm Doug Brown with Tim Johnson.
We bring you the best in college wrestling.
This is our final meet of the season.
We like to save the best for last.
Iowa against Iowa State.
And look at those rankings where they are right up at the top.
Well, Iowa, number one, Iowa State number four.
And if you look there, Iowa State's beaten Nebraska and Oklahoma State at one time or another.
They're having a great year.
Those upsets, you know, we talked about in the teaser happen when there are big crowds.
We're going to have quite a few people there, maybe six or seven, 8000.
And they're looking forward to a big one between these two teams.
Well, Iowa State's trying to end a 15 meet losing streak.
What a time to try to do it.
Iowa, 13, and Ohio ranked number one in the country.
Bobby Douglas, one of the great figures in wrestling, an Olympian himself, NCAA champion coach when he was at Arizona State.
He says it's kind of like David and Goliath, but only we have little stones.
Well, if you remember, David only needed one little stone to kill Goliath.
But the difference is the cyclones are going up against ten Goliath and Dan Gable.
Dan Gable, Olympic gold medalist and winner of 12 national champions as a coach in his 18 years at Iowa.
Now let's talk about individual matchups.
Are there going to be some good ones?
Let's pick one out of £126.
Two outstanding young wrestlers for 126 year, right.
Jeff McGinnis, he's really gaining a head of steam last year as a true freshman.
He placed fifth.
He's really doing a good job, I think, in his mind.
He doesn't think he's going to lose again.
He's got three national titles in a row plan, but he has to go up against a young man, Dwight Hanson from Iowa State and Oklahoma high school product that gave McGinnis everything he needed this year.
Earlier, a 7 to 5 loss to McGinnis.
When I first saw Dwight Hanson, I said, Who is that guy?
He's got quickness, he's powerful, he's got great technique.
He's going to test McGinnis tonight.
And what a match up at 142.
I can't wait to see this one.
Exotic and Derek monster.
Well, Billy's Alex had a good year but last week he got surprised by Scott Rennie from Oklahoma State.
He got pinned.
He doesn't like to be pinned.
He doesn't like to lose.
He went out and started throwing weights around and claiming the rope and swearing that this wouldn't happen again.
But he goes up against a higher ranked opponent tonight.
Monster Derek Monster, one of the stars of the Cyclones, an all-American last year.
Every time he goes out on the mat, he's looking for a pin.
This is going to be a great match.
It is.
You know, no matter how good Iowa State is and they are very good.
Iowa has done better than everybody this year.
What can happen?
Well, Glenn Cable's looking for his Hawkeyes to have some adversity and to come into a hostile environment.
And in Hilton, that's a hostile environment.
He's got a little bit of adversity because there's some sickness and there's some injuries.
Well, Bobby Douglas needs that Hilton magic.
He needs a whirlwind performance from his cyclones and he needs to catch the Hawkeyes on their tails.
Well, let's see if they can do it, because it's Iowa against Iowa State.
Next on college wrestling, we're back at Hilton Coliseum in Ames for the match between the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Iowa State Cyclones in a series that Iowa leads 3714.
And to these last years with Dan Gable in Iowa City, that's made the difference in this matchup over the time.
And as you said, we had 15 in a row for Iowa.
Those are what with the lineup.
Now look at hundred 34.
It's almost a sure thing that Hogan will be replacing Ironside because of an ankle injury that Ironside had in practice last night.
And you get into the upper weights.
There are a couple of other possibilities.
Heitman Run weighed in for Prince around now he might very well replace Sharon, who's had some illness, and Kelly and Mulvihill are well, who knows who will go where?
It'll probably be Simpson we think at heavyweight for Iowa State and Wheldon probably at 158.
You notice that Cruz is not in there at 118 Iowa State.
He injured a knee in practice this week and he is Bobby Douglas is just not going to take a chance on him.
He doesn't want to getting hurt for the big eight, which are coming up next.
Bobby Douglas, who has done a really good job for Iowa State, his team is tough.
They get after you.
And when they go up against Iowa, there you have two teams that know how to face off against each other and really work hard.
And there's the number one ranked 218 pounder talking it over with Dan Gable and Mike Napoli.
He has wrestled his opponent who is filling in for Mike Pyle, the referee.
And he'll have a microphone on us.
You know, we'd like to have him out there where you can hear him.
You can hear him talk to the wrestlers today, officials, whatever.
Jason Norrie is filling in against Mike Matta or Cruz.
Men are beat Murray 10 to 1 in the first match of the season, I think very demanding the Northern Open this year.
Norrie is very good and it's been tough for him to wrestle behind the Crues because he's won 21 and lost only seven.
He's us junior from Dyersville Beckman High School.
But men, number one is it's really tough, especially on defense, on its feet.
You throw something wrong and he'll kill you.
While you're right.
Mike Man, a four time state champion out of Illinois, Rock Falls, Illinois, a sophomore, ranked number one.
He's really a hammer.
He's really had a big pitching last week against Oklahoma State.
And he's he's coming on and his ranking shows that Jason Nery, as you said, a fine wrestler in his own right but junior college transfer in Cruz is beating him off the team but he gets a chance to see how far he's come this year.
That's 10 to 1 match that they had earlier.
Well, they get a mark.
They get a kind of a major hit against it tonight.
Now, you notice that anybody who wrestles matter has to be very careful.
As we say, man likes to counter and he's extremely he makes you pay if you don't do it quite right.
And Nouri knows that.
And he's going to try to be as active as possible.
And yet not make any mistakes.
He's not going to go under, get caught in that front headlock unless he really is positive he can do it.
But you see, men are controlling the head as he has so many of these men he's wrestled this year.
Last week, you saw him toss Oklahoma State's 118 pounder with that front headlock and underhook and pin him.
And you have to be very careful with him out there when you're up against it.
Well, men are likes to work out the two and one.
He likes to work in close and create that space there so that he can work that front headlock and say you don't want to get underneath him.
And that's what Jason Murray is going to try to do.
Stay out from underneath.
We have used in this for a three minute first period, just about half the time we have a minute and a half gone, a minute and a half left.
Now, I for one, I'm not surprised that there haven't been a lot of shots.
They're going to stay active and Nouri, I'm quite sure, does not want to make that false that bad shot.
He wants to look active to the official Mike Pyle without making a mistake.
Well, you make a good point there.
Doug McMahon has opened up more this year than ever before.
He was he didn't open up that much last year and was very defense oriented.
But he's really created more of an offense this year and Nouri wants to keep it close.
So he's always got a shot, always got a chance to maybe catch Manu on a mistake that he doesn't want to get caught in a five point move.
If you're just tuning in, you're in time for the whole show.
It's Iowa and Iowa State from Hilton Coliseum.
Two of the top teams in the country may be the two top teams in the country.
Who knows?
On any given night.
Iowa, of course, has been ranked well up ahead of everybody.
And Iowa State beat Oklahoma State down in Stillwater.
And Dan Gable said his team was never able to do it when he was right.
Well, Jason Murray, they're warned for stalling as he stayed on the edge.
And we said he's not trying, he's trying not to get underneath and he's trying to keep an inside position and stay up so his head's not beaten on by a man who likes to beat on your head right there.
Now he's where he wants to be on headlock.
He's real tough with that.
Here he comes.
And he got the takedown right at the very end of the period, 18 seconds to go.
Well, he did a good job of not letting men have his pet move right there, because when I had that front headlock and he does a little bit different, he catches the chin and under hooks and then he rolls through.
Now he gave up the two points so that he wouldn't have the five points against him.
You see the very few seconds left and the opening period, three minute first period at Hilton Coliseum between the Hawks and the Cyclones, Mina comes ove and I don't think much else is going to happen here in this first period.
No escape at the end of Pitt pairs Minnow in Kelso last week looking pretty good.
Lock Underhook rolled through, then he drives through.
He still has a chin there.
He drives through and goes chest to chest.
He's finally settles down here and gets a big first period pin.
Really got the Hawks off the mark against the Cowboys.
What a move there.
That was a very big one.
And man starts underneath Murray on top trying to ride him.
Man gets to his feet fighting the hands now.
But Nori still has them.
They go out of bounds in the same position.
What happened right there was might not have got to his feet, but as he came up, he didn't use his hand control.
There's Bobby Douglas wanted Jason to keep Jason there.
You keep Manu down, but the key is coming up and hand control just like he did it.
Nice quick time right there.
And that's an escape from into.
He got the favor, got his hips underneath him, had hand control and came up and out.
If you get your hips underneath you, you have one hand controlled and you stand up, you're out.
Three to nothing in favor of the number one ranked wrestler man of Iowa states.
Cruz is not wrestling at this weight because of a knee injury, but Iowa will be minus a couple of their first linemen, too.
We think probably Ironside, possibly Joel Sharrett and 190 because of illness.
We'll see how he feels later on.
There's a shot of the high crotch who is not really a very serious driver.
Men had a reach there but did not put his body behind it.
Well, from many standpoint, what he wants to do is show the referee that they're he's the one that's initiating action.
He needs to get into some flurries and get get it going just like this, because is just kind of like hanging on on the edge right there, not trying to do much.
One minute gone in the second period, not enough.
He knows that if he's having been warned the next time the referee thinks he's stalling, it's going to be a point.
For a second period is 2 minutes long.
The third period would also be 2 minutes long.
No choice for possession in this period.
Went to man.
He picked down and got out.
Now there's a good shot by Nouri because that'll keep the official off his back.
But man underhook against the double leg.
Try and force him off.
We have about 40 seconds to go in the second period.
Three nothing Manu takedown at the end of the first period and an escape to start the second half.
Milton Coliseum Ames, Iowa scene of many exciting matches has been Carver Hawkeye over the years between these two teams.
Mary as we say filling in for the injured Cruz who has an injured knee.
Here's a bunny I may not be a serious injury, but Bobby Douglas does not want to take a chance on having him hurt for the Big Eight and the Nationals, which are coming up from Dyersville.
Beckman High School was the state champion self.
He's going up against a four time state champion out of Illinois all-American last year as a freshman looking to prove his number one ranking.
This year, no more scoring.
In the second period, he we go to the third Nouri choice choice.
Bob Minner right there saying, get after him.
Let's go.
Come on.
Mike driven over from Rock Falls, Illinois.
All right, done down right.
Gets up and out in three, two, one, three, two, one.
Riding Time to nail and not there for either man If there's a as you know if one wrestler has a minute at the end of the match, more riding time than his opponent do it, they get an extra point.
There's nothing there right now.
Three, two, one man has the only takedown and that's the difference.
There's a double leg shot by man up and that'll keep the official off his back.
Really?
Neither wrestler was doing much right there.
Iowa State wanted stalling, called on Minner, but he wasn't doing anything either.
This is all important, of course, that first match, £118, no matter who's in there, man against Jason, Nouri and the cyclone has to get off the mark.
He trails only by to the next shot by a next good shot by either one may call get a called storming from the official.
Now there's a warning.
You're absolutely right.
That was that warning went against Mina.
So you could just feel that coming.
And they should know that out there.
They're the wrestler, needs to know the situation, be able to react and act accordingly.
Mike Kyle of Grinnell, Iowa, who's a well known NCAA referee over the years, now living in Iowa, makes them available for groups like this 3 to 1 in favor of men of Nouri, a reach at the leg.
He's in the last minute now, and Mina leads by two in a close, tough match, but he got the title there.
He's doing a great job right here.
On making men look bad.
In that piece circling, he's wrestled a smart match.
You've got to give credit to Jason NEARY from Iowa State right here.
He's circling and he's been putting the Iowa wrestler Mike Men in a position of being on the outside.
And that's real smart right here, because he's been keeping good position and man has not been able to counter him on those shots.
But we're now down in the last 25 seconds.
There you go, two point lead for Menno.
And there is a point against Matt, a penalty.
Mike Kyle gives a point to Murray.
Now if he were to take Manav down, he win.
And that's a big, big last 10 seconds just right here.
Nouri wants to try to circle around and get up, but it's too late, too little, too late.
And the winner of three by five, one point only, Mike Matta.
Well, I'll tell you, this is what Dan Gable was talking about, an adverse and hostile environment.
This is what he wants going into the Big Ten to be in that situation.
And that's what Bobby Douglas wanted for Jason very hard fought match get his team all fired up.
We can be with those hot guys.
Let's get after him.
So I think there was pluses on both sides.
Both sides.
Well, you like to win, but Noria improved his.
He lost by nine points to be very high.
It was a great match, had a very tactical match.
And that's Bobby Douglas right there, master technician himself.
It's technique and tactics.
And Bob Douglas does not put down the tactics part of it.
He really lifts that up and says in part, Here are two wrestlers who have never redshirted either one of them, Jeff McGuinness ranked number one, undefeated for Iowa 19 and all with six falls against Dwight Hanson, who came right out of Oklahoma High School.
Bobby Douglas said He's one of the best freshmen I've ever seen.
Got some good technique in high school, and he's made a few use of it in his first year at Iowa State, where he's ranked third.
Well, I'll tell you what, we were talking about Dwight Hanson in the opening, and he is somebody who's got great technique coming out of high school, better than most freshmen coming out of high school.
Keeps good position.
He's quick.
He's powerful.
MCGINNIS The same thing.
Very powerful wrestler.
He's you know he's got a good size good nice body.
£400 there you see him still willing to go in and lock up a little bit.
That could be interesting the way they're squaring off against each other.
Set this up a little bit.
It was a75 earlier in the year.
Talking to the coaches.
They really felt Hinson may have out wrestled McGuinness.
And so it's a standard to look at today and see what's inside Tripp.
But it didn't work.
And in fact, on the edge of the mat, they come back to the center without a score, can't hear.
Mike Pyle, the officials microphone.
Maybe we are not there every once in a while.
It doesn't work.
I don't understand what you said to the boys and young men there.
Hinson and McGinnis, number one, Number three against number one.
And number three has already shown that he's not going to be intimidated by number one here, Dwight Hanson going after him.
McGinnis has been so good this year that we've he's almost unnoticed.
You know, he just he just keeps on winning.
And people assume he's going to keep on doing it right a minute and a half to go.
There's Dan Gable with a Jim Zaleski and Tom Brandes reading from right to left Iowa coaching staff here in Hilton Coliseum, Iowa against Iowa State.
The Hawkeyes won the opening match 3 to 2 and late in the meet, three zero.
That's a great way to end our college wrestling series this year because Iowa State, look at this crowd tonight, Doug, It's just great to see this at Hilton Coliseum again, what Bobby Douglas has done here and and the way the wrestlers are responding to him is great.
And then, like I said, Dan Gable saying this is just where we want to be in the last before the big towns and in a situation like this, let's see what we're made of.
Let's see if we're as good as our ranking.
Hinson is in there in the last 50 seconds against Jeff McGuinness, the undefeated Iowa City high school wrestler.
That time, Henson stopped him again.
A leg shot.
Oh, you can't say that.
One of them's been inactive here.
Now they're going after it.
But they're both good.
Mentioned Iowa City High School.
McGinnis, coached by two of the great wrestling coaches in Iowa history, Clyde Bean and Brad Smith, who is now currently the coach there and former NCAA champion for the Hawkeyes.
Two great coaches, 20 seconds and less to go.
You see in the three minute first period.
No score here between Henson and McGinnis.
This is where they'd like to have a takedown where nobody could answer it by escaping.
Look at them tie up across each other if they want to throw the end of the period.
No score here in now, of course, I think Henson in the second period right here McGuiness McElroy being shared could become first trio from one team to go entire season unbeaten.
When did it happen last?
Doug who is the last team to do that?
I know, so we'll just let people think about a little bit you at home.
You see if you can remember what happened, right?
We're in time.
We're anticipating McGinnis got to escape there, but we're anticipating a little bit.
But isn't that something?
They're all three rank number one, McElroy, Reed, Schirra and this man, right here, they're all three undefeated.
And when's the last time that three people from the same team went undefeated in one NCAA titles?
And we'll tell you another hint they didn't win the team title that year, a national title.
McGuinness won Henson nothing.
It was McGinnis.
His choice he took down.
He has a front headlock.
It's the first time he's had that tight.
He likes this handsome keeping good position comes right back up and squares off.
Well both wrestlers are combative in their style and that's something for McGinnis.
That's an improvement.
He's become more combative after being in the Iowa room, and that's their style and in hits and isn't going to back off from anybody.
Handsome and McGinnis again has tried to shock us with the elbows.
Didn't work to go back to the center one nothing.
McGinnis three nothing.
Iowa after one match.
There you go.
You're up.
So the Iowa state bench don't go.
There you go.
Both wrestlers trying to control the head, trying to control the head, either to turn it into something like that.
Look at it, trying to get inside, trotting on an inside trip.
He had the underhook and was looking for a high crotch and for Hansen's what he did and then throw with him.
He's going to take the chance out of bounds.
That makes it exciting back here.
38 seconds to go.
McGuinness one Henson nothing.
They've done nothing to score on their feet.
The only point was an escape.
Well, you know, you wonder if there's a combination of things going on here.
You're Milton.
You wonder if the Hawkeyes are just a little bit less aggressive.
Then on the other hand, the Cyclones are doing a good job of defending right here.
Now let's see who wins.
Offense versus defense.
Good wizard, though, by Henson.
Let's see if McGinnis can get him on technique.
It's out of bounds.
Mike Kyle calls it out and you come back to the center again.
McGinnis got it on a nice shot that Henson was able to kick behind get a wizard going.
And again, they've been very aggressive in their defense.
The Iowa State cyclones have been very aggressive in their defense every second period.
And and now here's what happened in 1969.
McGuire, Mike Grant, Cleo Mcclory all went undefeated.
They won the national title.
But Dan Gable's Iowa State Cyclones won the tournament.
How about that?
Well, we'll keep an eye on it and see if it happens.
Tony.
I'll see what Henson can do underneath against me.
He's got to get out of the legs now.
This is tough.
Hill Henson is not used to being on the bottom.
You know, when you come out of high school and McGinnis is up there on top, especially when he gets a leg and like that starts cranking.
Look at his opinion.
McGuinness has shown that his opinion he likes to put his opponents on the back and that's what he's looking for right now.
Got the leg in in an armbar and looking to try to crank it.
Let's keep track of the riding time.
It's 25 seconds now and Hanson absolutely has to get out, as you know, and McGuinness would be very happy to ride him all the way out.
Well, McGuinness has put himself in a position right here that the official can not call him to stall in any way.
Stalemates the best that Henson is going to get here because McGuinness is really trying to crank coaches at Iowa State are telling Henson don't stay down there and look for something on the mat.
Get up and out, stand up and go.
You got to you got to get your hips underneath you.
You got to explode out of there with hand control.
Nothing else here.
You can't let L.A. get the legs on.
41 seconds of riding time for that man, Jeff McGuinness of Iowa.
There's Henson's after out, but I don't know if he didn't have the hand control coming up.
So McGuinness is able to stand up, back up again, but no hand control go one one and he got out when he needed to get out.
There's no riding time.
It's one one takedown.
When 51 seconds are right in time for McGuinness.
We're in the last minute at £126 between Henson and undefeated Jeff McGuinness.
Seven five last time.
One one this time.
And it comes down to the takedown.
We don't have any ties anymore.
You know we go to overtime and there's a good front headlock for Henson now what can he do with it?
What can he do with it?
He can't do anything with it.
He didn't get a good feel that time.
And so McGuinness brings it right back up to tie the head up once more, even up and going on.
And he just k that was a warning.
Well, Henson just kind of had a mental lapse right there.
You don't just walk off the mat like that warning against Henson with 25 seconds to go There's McGuinness trying no way here comes here comes Henson with a body lock But McGuinness shows you what he's made of.
He has a real good basketball.
No, that was close, Sunny.
I don't know.
You know, Henson probably stepped on the out of bounds lines right there, but he had McGuinness in trouble.
But McGuinness came out and salvaged that.
Wow, that was a great flurry.
It was Here he comes again.
The high crotch decided he didn't like it would like to throw right here overtime.
Okay, here we go.
£126.
We have a two minute overtime.
Whoever scores first at sudden death between McGuinness and Henson.
If Henson can make a shot and get in, he'll have an advantage.
If McGuinness can stop him with the elbows and be in a front headlock, he'll be an advantage.
Iowa leads three to nothing.
Men are just nip.
Jason Norrie filling in for cruise at 118 by 3 to 2 Iowa leads three to nothing McGuinness and Dwight Henson need.
As you said neither one of these man has ever redshirted.
McGuinness started right in last year out of high school and Henson this year right out of high school and they're both good as you can probably tell they keep fine position out there they have a good arsenal of moves there.
Sean Charles standing in the back was a nice high crotch by McGuinness stuck it in What can he do if he wins?
He wins it, he scores.
He's got what he wants there.
Go.
Oh, McGuinness goes into the rolls He's got to keep that angle.
Saves the possession Wow this is a great flurry again.
But McGuinness is still in there all the time.
Is a minute gone on the overtime?
Oh, still nothing out of bounds and McGuinness wins takedown at the end and great outside single was initiated by McGuinness.
Then there was a flurry Fantastic Henson says I'll see you next time.
McGuinness says all in a day's work and a great rivalry I think between those two years.
Jeff the castle dodged a bullet here against Dwight Henson of Iowa State.
Six to nothing.
Iowa now after ten matches, it was a good one.
Yeah, that was great.
Those are those are two fellows are going to be in the national championship hunt this year and every year.
Let's let's see that takedown again.
It starts with hit a little outside high single right there comes up now he gets his hips underneath him.
Watch it does a nice job of getting his hips underneath him right here.
Sexy he in the air as he's going to slide his head underneath, come down.
But Henson does a nice job of countering.
Watch this on the counter.
This is a great flurry and it ends up right here with Fox ahead now on the edge watch still in.
Yes, yes.
Yeah.
Two points.
Good move at the end by McGuinness Henson was unable to keep the flurry going.
Here we go to 134.
Now, Mark Ironside has been in this lineup for Iowa all the we understand he had a little bit of an ankle injury in practice and Kevin Hogan is filling in for him who's been wrestling a good deal this year, ten and six you've seen in this year for him if you in watching college wrestling and Cody Tate from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, former national junior College champion, 28 and seven, ranked eight is in against Hogan going for Iowa State.
Here we are a third match.
This is exciting.
Two could have gone either way and Iowa got both of them.
Hogan He's had a good year up until the time Ironside beat him off the team, but he was having a lot better year in the last couple of years before he lost a lot of close matches in the last couple of years.
Two years with a broken hand.
He has a bad neck and he's just a physical wreck.
But it's just great to see him as a senior.
He's he stayed all the way through.
He's on the team.
He's just good to see him stick it out.
Here he is getting to go against Iowa State, the last dual meet of the year.
Claudette Tate Junior from Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
He's a talent.
He is he's ranked high and he's really a great addition to Iowa State.
And he's I've seen him improved a lot already this year.
He was pretty much just straight ahead and gave away a lot as far as telegraphing his move and moves and things that the first year.
And I think he's doing a better job of setting up his moves and getting to the outside and creating some angles.
Well, Bobby said that one of the things about Courtney Taylor, he might be just too nice a guy.
You can't be too nice.
Nice guys.
Do win, but you got to have a little bit of meanness out there on the Man two on one down on that outside single leg.
But it happened right on the edge of the mat and there's nothing to come from it.
We're almost halfway through this first three minute period, Iowa six and Iowa State, nothing.
They won the first two, but they were close and overtime.
In fact, McGuiness beat Henson 3 to 1.
Tate and Hogan go nuts.
Now the Cyclone and Red Cardinal against the black of Iowa.
Let's take them a long way if he can pull it in that he's not going to be able to without going out of bounds against Hogan.
Hogan, of course, a senior, as we said, from Carlsberg, Iowa, Ed Koch High School.
And he was in high school, a two time state champion, going against Cody Tate, an out of stater and here trying to make a home with him.
And that's something at this level competition, a two time state champion is just about average.
Right.
You know, if you don't have two or three state titles, it's pretty hard to get on one of these teams.
Well, Tate comes in as a national junior college champion, two time all-American in the JUCO national championships, and he was a two time state champion himself.
So two time state champions going against each other.
40 seconds to go in the freshman at first.
Perry Here comes Tate.
Nice move.
And he's here.
No, no, he doesn't have it yet.
He was given that move because of his not settled.
That's right.
Now he has the two right leverage and we'll see if he can get four.
Take down 11 three.
It ends.
He can stay in bounds, Terry.
Got it.
Take down Tate.
Hogan fought really well, but he didn't fight long enough.
And Tate Tate had it and he stayed with it.
And he got the two points.
He stayed right at it.
That's the first Iowa State takedown.
Right.
And it comes with 18 seconds to go.
In the first period of 134, Cody Tate now goes into the ride position on top.
He's generally considered better on his feet, but he's learning down here now it's a roll by Hogan that does not come out well, but it looks like it's going to ride to the end of the period at half, what, 20 seconds?
All right.
I am here with the news.
I think that's the man.
It's not wrestling tonight, Mark Ironside.
And it must be a slight injury or something and sound like it'd be those two winds he's had over Schmidt of the head team.
Oklahoma State have been terrific and we've showed you both of them.
Well, he's catapulted into the national scene with those two and he's going to be a top, you know, one of the seeds in the national tournament.
And he's got his sights set on a Big Ten championship.
Ironsides Choice for the second period is down.
Tate goes to work.
No, he doesn't use the leg.
Hogan comes up without hand control, but he well, he needed it, actually.
Well, he is a good rider, but Hogan is good underneath.
So we've got strength against strength.
I don't think we've seen Hogan been ridden out this year.
He does a nice job of getting out.
But like you said, Tate can settle in, get the far risk to put the legs in and can be awful tough on top.
Nice first move by Tate is good enough to stop Hogan from doing anything.
The second move almost broke him down, so he's gaining a little time here.
He has 4550 seconds remaining.
Time.
He wants to stay in this position for another seven, six, 5 seconds to get a minute.
He didn't get it.
Yes, he did.
One minute exactly, Hogan, 2 to 1.
Now, as the escape goes to Hogan and they're back on their feet again, where Tate has the only takedown, six to nothing.
Iowa over Iowa State after two matches.
Man, I beat Norrie by 1.3 to 2.
McGuinness beat Hanson 3 to 1 in overtime, double shot by Tate, but not really a very good run.
And he thought better of it and came back to his position.
It was one of those straight at you type gives you a little bit of action there but nothing dangerous.
But he didn't put anything else together.
Now very in position.
Nice change of levels but out of bounds.
Hogan kept his position awfully well and one foot was out of bounds for Tate.
So Referee puts him back to the middle with 34 seconds left.
And it's 2 to 1.
Hogan Why not to keep it here, maybe.
And and then pick one up later on to go in the lead.
We have only 25 seconds to go.
In the second period at 134 between Tate and Kevin Hogan, filling in for Mark Ironside at this weight.
He said, If you're wondering where Ironside is, the rumor is he has a little bit of an ankle injury on the Don't take a chance.
There's a high crotch by Tate but only do does he get it He gets to right at the end of the period that is a big takedown He's done that now he's come on strong at the end of the two periods.
That's what it takes to be an all-American, to be a champion, be able to score right at the end.
Look at this.
He drives through.
There's very few seconds left.
He gets to take down right at the buzzer.
Don't give your opponent a chance to get out.
That's the best way to do it.
Score with no time left.
Now, Tate goes underneath.
He's pretty hard to hold down and Kevin Hogan comes over him.
Hand control fight.
Tate would like to pull him apart and then come out.
He did.
And he now leads 5 to 1 by four over.
Kevin Hogan, who's going to have to come up with something on his feet for the Hawkeyes to keep this streak alive.
They won the first two matches, but they're trailing at 134 because Tate has to take out credit card and two nice, nicely executed takedowns also got in deep on on his shots and Tate was able to complete them at the end of both periods low single by Hogan.
But he didn't really get the position he got stretched out and Tate is having the same thing happen to him now.
He's in Boy, he's got good long arms.
Danny Frye.
He's got good on long arms.
And right now he looks just a little more powerful than Hogan and is looks like he's got a little more left, you know, a little sickness in the room in Iowa.
You look at wonder how can anybody escape it?
And Hogan looks like he's running out of some stamina a minute to go in the match.
Tate's trying to stay in.
Well, this isn't bad for Iowa State because besides having control of the situation here, you're wasting a lot of time and you've got a51 lead and the stalemate.
Mike Pyle calls the stalemate referee Mike Pyle.
There's Bobby Sand.
You're up by four now, staying with to do something and be aggressive.
Bobby Douglas is one that looks at improvement and he has to see it so far in all three of these matches, there's Tate again, but it's on the edge to seven.
No one right here and again, single leg.
Now he looks, the leg slips, it comes back and catches both legs.
Feet still in two points.
So it's 7 to 1 in favor of the cyclone here.
He's had three takedowns, Cody Tate's 28 and seven this year.
Now he lets Hogan go because he wants to get a major decision if he can.
He's confident against a hard Hogan goes gentle over there with a nice shot by Hogan right there in Hogan's right now that's a team move.
He doesn't want to give up the four points for the team and he's going to hang on right there and it'll be a straight decision.
7 to 2 right in time.
We'll go, however, to make it 8 to 2.
And the winner and the cyclones are on the board.
The cyclones are on the board.
Nice win by Cody Tate right there.
And Hogan is just looked like that he didn't have the stamina left or right there and Tate throwing it on home.
But Hogan did a nice job of staying in and getting that last shot, keeping cyclones from getting four points right there.
He doesn't look like he's over Ironside.
I'll tell you what.
Is this match going to be a match or not?
Oh, that's going to be great.
I want to see this one.
Well, Derek, Mom's here against bills adding number five against number six.
That's Derek Monster from Newton.
And I'm excited, too, because Iowa State has looked good in the first three matches right here, setting the table here for Monster.
Their leader right here.
So it's got to be an exciting time for the cyclone fans.
They couldn't ask for more excitement than they're getting tonight.
The guys are really putting it out on the line for Bill Shattuck, who is a four time high school, three title winner in Montana, goes up against Derek here.
They're both exciting.
They tend to they don't leave much in the locker room.
You know, they go out it type place gets quiet.
You know, there's a sense of anticipation.
There's that front headlock.
The monster likes to work.
A lot of these wrestlers these days like to use a front headlock.
Monster has a lot of variations on his.
He does He's really improved in this position.
I think he's one of the best in the country at this front headlock situation.
He can kneecap, he can underhook, he can roll.
I'll tell you he has and he gets into that three quarter.
NELSON He is dangerous and he really does once he gets control, he likes to go for the pin and Zach outstanding 23 and three record finished third in the Midlands where monster was second by the way in December last year.
The only loss he had in 12 matches was to carry Kovacs.
And that's no great, right?
There's a beautiful high crotch move by Monster, but he has to finish it.
Doesn't have the takedown yet.
What can Zadig do?
And it's what can Monster do right here?
How can you change levels and make this great shot into 2.0?
He has to keep those attic in bounds.
For one thing he gets out of it.
Good hip.
Go right there.
Good reaction, good defense.
And that's going to happen in a first period when you have three wrestlers like this.
But that was a great shot by Derek Monster.
He can get underneath going just like he can get the front headlock and get both of them going.
He's really dangerous.
Yeah, that's right.
You don't see actually Monster do a lot of that and that when he adds that to his arsenal, he's kind of scary.
He's in the front headlock position.
He's where he wants to be in the tie up against bills attic we said an all-American at 134 last year Derek Monster is up to 142 this year.
There's Jimmy Zaleski and Tom Brands on the left, two assistant coaches of Dan Gable.
With Tim Johnson.
I'm Doug Brown and Hilton Coliseum.
It's Iowa and Iowa State.
Three matches down and Iowa State's one.
I am one of the last one.
The last one in the Iowa one, the first two.
So it's 6 to 3 that came out of Montana as a four time state champion and redshirted his first year and finally made the team last year, it was 11 to 111 one as a sophomore at the midway point, but fell to academic casualty.
And this year he's strong and coming through and looking at the NCAA.
He's real excited and like we said, upset last week has something to prove this week.
35 seconds to go in the three minute first you see the clock up above their heads, 2625.
We've had nothing here on the feet in the first period so far, although there were a couple of scrambles that was adequate under and again front headlock for Monster here Shattuck keeps good position though and the monster hasn't been able to work anything off this that you make a good point there Doug Zach is staying in the position that makes it impossible to make the move.
What's going to happen?
We're going to look at between here as monster here, here's Monster.
With his three quarter headlock.
He had the leg trapped right there in a little mix.
It's a cradle and boom, and it's a different kind of cradle.
He likes alternative style moves because he's a three quarter Nelson and he brings that head to the knees that he has trapped by the leg.
And he kind of uses three of his four appendages there to stick his opponent.
He's dangerous.
Saric is very tough on two on the anybody get out here he came out made a good set move but there's dirt monster back in that was good static has the front headlock moves on the edge Tadic leads one nothing excellent reaction by monster there as he shot right back in after that he got out but then zadig get good hips and came back with the front headlock.
He got good scrambling going.
It's just the match we thought it was going to be.
You should up there.
Tadic has a lead of one point.
Iowa has a team lead of three for three.
We're at 142 Monster from Newton, Iowa.
Bills attic from Great Falls, Montana very even match so far we we know that both teams have strong first five weights and they've shown it so far you know for some time some exotic is going to try to work something off of it.
Just to me means Attic is looking more comfortable on his feet than he did in the early part of the first period.
Brick has a minute to go in the second period, 2 minutes long, one that I think was adequate.
It's time to go under mounds here from the looks of it as a warning.
There's a warning against Monster here for backing out.
Now, that's not making Bobby Douglas very happy, but it's it can make a difference late in the match, Zuanic has a lead and one warning against his opponent.
So there's that again.
He's got the angle.
He just barely got it.
Lots of dangerous angle on the knee.
So Mike, Mike Kyle calls it off.
Well, if he hadn't caught that monster, it would have been around him for the takedown.
And if he hadn't twisted it, he would have gotten the takedown.
Both wrestlers going at it.
You know, if you were in either one of these opponents, you need to have a strong neck.
They both work the head so hard you work on your neck muscles in there, because if you let the man pull your head around the way they'd like to, you're a soft touch.
That really create a lot of activity.
And that, of course, is looking very powerful.
Wrestling, Smart Wrestling by Bill Zanni.
He's here.
He looks like he's just all of a sudden got a spurt energy, but he's doing a really smart job of creating all kinds of opportunities.
Whether or not he's going to get the takedown or not is immaterial right here.
He's making mounts here look bad.
Yeah, it's a it's a he lost a monster, gave up a point for a penalty there to zadig.
And that one that hurts because it's one of his goals in the third period and gets out right away.
He's still a point behind again Zadig looking for that inside and pushing monster to the outside.
And so we're going to the third period.
Here's a reminder that an intermission tonight we'll bring you up to date with the current college wrestling.
Who's giving you an address for the right to with your comments or criticisms about our telecast.
And we'll preview the high school wrestling championships next week and looks at some statistics on the first half.
That's all coming up.
After 151 throw Derek mounts here and bills attic and attic leads to nothing.
Here comes my series out to Flash but still 1.4.
I don't think you get anything out faster than that.
As a one second escape.
But now is that a donnybrook?
Is that a penalty point is very important here because Zadig quite keeping good position, being in the aggressive position on the edge of the mat, has picked up a penalty who's 52 and again makes a shot right there.
Monster needs to turn this into something right here.
Tadic Again, keeping a strong physical balance position against the tough front headlock.
The way Montero's is going to win here is if he puts some moves together.
You got to have some chain chain moves right here.
You can't have just one move because it's not going to work against that.
He's got to do one thing and come back to another and keep going.
Now, that was not a very good move by monster here, but there's no takedown yet.
There it is.
Now, he got out of position in that situation.
He tried a straight ahead double that, didn't look like it was coming anywhere.
And Zadig is now up by 4 to 1.
It's 4 to 2 now to the escape, and it's close to a takedown.
I have not seen Billy's.
Edit right here.
Here is the takedown and he brings him down hard.
Make sure that two punch here comes out for the escape.
It's sort of cute.
I haven't seen Bill Zadig look this good.
All year.
He's going against one of the toughest wrestlers in the nation.
And Derek Monster.
Monster needs to put something together here again.
Here we are in that front headlock.
Monster needs a takedown to tie.
There's no riding time whatsoever.
And Zadig is managing to hold his own on his feet.
He got the only takedown and it's the difference.
It's the difference.
Well, monsters backs up against the wall right here because once he's down by two and Zach's feeling real confident, he's going to be right back on it, back in on him.
This is a big one for Iowa State because they feel they have to have this.
He's out of tie up and the throw position he almost here needs is a takedown here, though he doesn't need to get careless tie up by monster who would like to throw can't do it and he's only has 20 seconds now to catch him.
Zadig Zadig does a nice job of changing levels.
He's up high, He's down.
He he changes his level so well.
He attacks the hips very well too.
I'm sure he made one very fine high crotch move that didn't score.
And I don't think he's going to score upper body against Savage, especially with 9 seconds left.
Well, especially the way Zadig keeps pummeling in there and he keeps the inside position so.
Well, this is one Iowa State thought they had to have.
They had to have this one from Monster and they're not going to get it.
4 seconds to go reverses the last game earlier this year, Billings attack wins in hostile Hilton Coliseum and bills and it does it for the Hawkeyes It's 9 to 3 now for Iowa, having won three of four in the first part of this made a big win for Saturday.
That's a huge win for us.
And that's a huge win for Sadie.
That's a seed win.
When you look at the NCAA ways, you look at how you do at the end of the year and and here at Hilton Coliseum, all close matches so far, three of them go to the Hawkeyes.
This one ought to be fun.
I think it's going to be a great match for The Undefeated.
And even if Bono looks so good this year, Lincoln Mack already undefeated in two years, a two time national champion against Chris Bono, who has won 18 of his last 19 matches.
I think McQuaid is going to have to have it strapped on to win tonight.
I think Bono's ready.
I think he's confident.
I think he wants it.
He's in his home territory right here.
I think, Mac, where he has the match of his career tonight so far, as far as competition is concerned.
Well, we'll see.
Last year they had a pretty good one in the dual meet and McIlroy.
We won by only two by three as a matter of fact, 5 to 2.
Very hard worker Chris Bono from Corner Vedra Beach, Florida, against Lincoln McElroy from Phillip, South Dakota.
What a talent.
McIlroy has proved to be just whatever we thought it would be.
In a matter of fact, Bob Bowen is going to have to do is make McIlroy wrestle his match and that's it.
There's not going to be a lot of action as far as high scoring.
There's going to be a lot of position work right here.
No score.
They've used a minute three minute first period.
Bono of Iowa State, Mac O'Reilly, C, Mac, Reagan working the head Bono out of position be able to snapping down go around things like that back to the center with a minute 49 to go in the second period.
Iowa nine Iowa state three after three matches.
Oh nice move underneath by Mike McCurry with a high crotch.
But bono is working hard, not able to deal with McIlroy, who had great balance and speed.
I think McElroy respects Chris Bono.
I think he knows he's going to have to wrestle real well tonight.
That was well executed.
A big scoop.
He's kind of made famous and got underneath Chris Bono and nice job there.
Two to nothing to the one.
Now, Bono needs to be strategic and tactical here.
He can't get into McIlroy his match or he's going to be in big trouble.
And it's going to be just takedown after takedown.
He needs to keep it within himself.
Good move by McIlroy.
And that's just exactly what you're talking about.
He can get you out of position in a hurry.
Good.
Around to single leg.
This is a takedown here for the two points.
Really.
And here's the last one.
Another single knocks him down, grabs both legs, gets both feet in and two points for McIlroy.
Escape makes it 4 to 2.
Well, we had Bono back on his heels there, not where he wanted to be.
4 to 2 in favor of the Hawk-Eye.
The undefeated Lincoln Mack already hasn't lost since his freshman year.
And even then, he won the national title by Bono is pretty much fighting Mack already off now, but he's not been able to score himself yet.
25 seconds to go.
The first three top brands and they want their man, Lincoln McCreery, to get in on the legs, shoot in and get that lower level attack going against Bono, whose parents are all the way up from Florida.
They come a lot of the matches are Ernie and Rita and they're real proud of their son coming all the way from Florida and making a name for himself here in the Iowa State.
Iowa State, second place.
That's the time remaining in the first period between McIlroy, avian Bono at £150.
Iowa has three of the four matches so far, all except £134.
There's Harold Nicholson, the start, the now legendary coach at and Iowa State coach of the team that won that national title in 69.
That's right.
Coach of Dan Gable Bono starting underneath in the second period gets out makes it for three.
Okay.
He's back in this now.
He needs to be able to do something that not many people do and that's take down Lincoln a like a microwave.
He does get taken down, but it's kind of like when you trap an animal, you want it's hard to tell whose leg he's going to chew off, yours or his anyway.
Macadamia stupid.
That's right.
And it's going to happen in a hurry.
Bono has been doing defensively a good job against Mac, and maybe although he's been taken down twice, he's going to have to score though, and he's going to have to get back to the center of the man.
That's right.
That's right.
Yes.
There it is.
His hunger in good form, his toes are in.
It's unpopular.
But I think with the stretch here we go.
He knows right where he is, Mac, or if he does, boom, Is he in And he got control.
There's the pose.
There's the control.
That's what the rules saying.
It's for 6 to 4 after the escape.
Say now nice shot into his Matt McQuaid.
He's got his style.
His man's going.
I think Mac O'Reilly's one of these smells the NCAA and he sees the end of the end of the tunnel there And he says, All right, if it's only for three or four weeks, I can turn it on to 110% all the time.
He's going to let Bono go.
And, you know, to just finish that thought like a mac, always one that doesn't really like to wrestle the whole season.
He came into January with only a few matches.
He likes to be at that.
He's in there quick.
Now, Bono is going to have to get his act together here and stabilize in a hurry because Mac lately is starting to make the the snowball roll down the hill.
Right.
He is starting their inside trip and boom, 10 to 5.
And Bono, you're looking at Bono is no slouch, no Bono one, maybe even too excited tonight because he is very excited about the matches he's really put together a year, like you said, 18 out of 19 wins in his last 19 matches.
He's going against the best of Bobby Douglas.
I mean, what do you expect from a five time state champion?
I mean, I've never heard of that before.
Lincoln McElroy came onto the scene, and that's a two time NCAA.
He's going to he's won every ultimate title that he's ever gone for since he started wrestling in junior high.
That's in He just makes a defensive man, all you nation.
He makes you defensive.
That's all there is to it.
There's a warning against Bono.
He makes you think defense because he's coming at you from so many different angles in the second period.
As a matter of fact, I believe he was tied to six and it's McIlroy obvious choice.
He's going to go underneath one warning against Bono, writing time is not there yet.
47 seconds, five takedowns for McIlroy.
Maybe that crazy up hips are out now he's able to come out and face for the one point in on him see look at him work the inside changes levels work on the inside and push the opponent to the out 11 to 6 And that's not just shoving that was flurries that was trying to catch the inside kind of drop down that's just perpetual motion 11 to 6 in favor of a two time national champion.
There's the first time that Bono even and really stuffed his head and ran around Bono came in on the shot of McIlroy, anticipating stuff.
The head walked around and there was a very subdued bench at Iowa State with a minute and a half to go in the third period.
The match here between Bono and McIlroy, B, it's 13 to 7.
After the escape, McIlroy was willing to give up the escape to go looking for takedowns again.
He has plenty of time to make it a major decision, which would happen if he gets an eight point difference.
You know, McIlroy and his in the field at 150 seems to be like Iowa and the field when it comes to the team.
And that's the truth.
Bono is a top wrestler, one of the top may finishes.
You know, he'll be an all-American.
He'll be right up there at the top.
But you can see the difference right now between the two of them.
I was in the same position, the fight for second place as far as a team.
And it's going to be a great fight and they're all good teams, but I don't know if anybody could come close.
The Hawkeyes will their balance.
They're going to keep the he's going to keep Bono down until he has riding time and he has it now.
Now he's got to let them go.
He knows right where he is in his game of 8 to 15, 15 to 8, 15, seven takedowns for McIlroy putting on a clinic at Hilton Coliseum before a crowd that has come to see the back of the head again.
And walking around really quick game one off, 17 to 9 with about a half a minute to go.
Bobby says, I want one takedown.
That's right.
He says, Keep good position.
Stay in there tight.
There it is.
There he is on in the single in on the single leg.
But there's McIlroy.
These hips separate to his yogurt that breaks him down.
And now it is my boy and me.
Something is going 19 to 10 now.
And again, McIlroy is going for a takedown.
He doesn't have it yet.
And he will as soon as he gets in there.
He rose to the occasion.
He knew that Bono was tough.
He knew that he was in Hilton and it was going to be a little bit hostile.
And he he elevated to a new standard until you hit it on top of his game.
He really is right in time goes to Macarena as well.
And so he wins his 17th straight this year, undefeated number one, ranked 22 out of ten over Chris Bowen of Iowa State, who is much better than the score, Looks like he's in there against a really good wrestler.
This is one of the great ones.
McIlroy, Lincoln McIlroy, Iowa leads now 12 to 3.
That's the end of the 155 match.
Kim and I will be back in just a moment from Hilton Coliseum with more college wrestling coverage.
13 to 3.
I'll give you all score on your statewide home.
Four stars last game, Iowa Public Television, a resource for Iowa's future.
Now we're back at Hilton Coliseum in Ames, Iowa, where the hawks of Iowa ranked number one lead, Iowa State 13 to 3, having won four of the first five matches, all but the £134 they were well contested, every single one.
I thought they were great matches.
I thought the intensity by both teams with just it was all the way along.
118 start out good 206 McGinnis got tested.
It really came down to the end of 34 card.
Tate had a good win in a 42 Gillies attic.
Story wouldn't happen again after last year's of last week's Penn Gore.
He came in big style against the star of the team on Cyr.
And at 154, what can you say?
He takes it to another level and each team had a and a person missing.
But that's worked out just about evenly.
We've got five yet to go.
Next week, we're going to see some people who are the next generation, you might say, of wrestlers.
The Iowa High School Wrestling Championship will be broadcast live year in and year out, February 25th, next Saturday at 6:30 p.m.. Will stay with us from beginning to end here on Iowa Public Television, your statewide home for sports.
And Tim and I, well, we have to admit, they're kind of geared up for that nominee because, well, you know, the one thing that's just proven out sometimes in the middle, it doesn't seem like it's going to end, but it's proven out.
It does.
And it is a spectacle.
It's just great to see those kids climb up to the top and second and third and fourth and the people for a different towns cheer.
It's fantastic.
We also want to tell you about a special place you can write.
We'd like to get your comments about our college wrestling coverage this year and let us know what you think about our Sunday broadcast time, our special ones on Saturday night.
Any other comments, criticisms, suggestions that you have right to college wrestling post Office Box 6450 Johnston, Iowa 50131 Post Office Box 6450 Johnston, Iowa 5131 We love to hear from you.
No matter what you have to say.
We've been broadcasting wrestling in Iowa, one of the great sports of the state for a long time.
And we look forward to seeing some of the great young people in that high school meet the great 1980s wrestlers of the world.
It just isn't amazing.
All wrestling.
It's great sport.
We had good news, too, earlier this year in Illinois.
We just found out.
That's right.
With the wrestling programs dropping around the country and some of the non-revenue men's sports going the wayside, one game, Eastern Illinois, who had announced that they were going to drop the program, just were ordered to reinstate the program immediately.
And so that's good news for wrestling Eastern Illinois wrestling program back on.
And that could be a trend that we'll see, maybe wrestling programs being added, not taken away.
Great for wrestling.
Good news.
We're going to take a look, too, at some of our first half statistics here eventually to show you just who had the most take downs and that sort of thing.
Total points by individuals.
Iowa up by 11 takedowns, the same as the score, 13 to 3.
No one there falls right in time.
Points equal to the only difference from a standard decision was a major decision by Marco Rubio at 150.
We had one overtime match that was a thriller between McGinnis and Hanson, which McGinnis won about a minute into the overtime period.
Here we go for the last 5 minutes.
Iowa is generally considered.
Oh, there's Kevin Jackson, who was a former world champion alumni night here at Iowa State, the dread incarnate signs all over this place.
They've done a good job of bringing him back.
And boy, do they have there's Mike managers Dale and saw Mike man a little while ago Great Gary McCall they're behind and and so it's one of Mike Mann one of the greatest wrestlers never to win a national title.
You know think of those battles he had with some of these Iowa teams.
Now there's Barry Wheldon coming out for 158 a match.
And this should be a ding dong battle to him between very well and finally right.
Daryl Webber has been injured by heart building.
Well, for him, as a matter of fact, he helped win that Oklahoma State meeting before that thing.
Wheldon, this back problem, three record, a sophomore from Englewood, Colorado, Webber is ranked number four and has a fine, fine record this year.
He was an all-American last year for Iowa.
The hawks tend to have the better records at the upper weights, and they managed to win four of the five at the lower weights very well and would like to even this up just a little bit for Iowa State in front of the home crowd, Hilton Coliseum working and working.
Well done from Cherry Creek High School in Colorado, and of course, Daryl Weber from Don Bosco High School and Gilbert Vail.
And it's going to really be a good match here.
Wheldon, like you said, coming back into the lineup after some injuries and some things kept him out and he'd like to get back on course.
Now they're very he finished third in the Big Eight last year.
His record was a winning record, but nothing like this year.
There's been a lot of improvement.
These these are two of the teams.
You know, you think about the wrestling programs around the country where people come in and improve, come in as a freshman year to year, people get better and better and better in Iowa, of course, it's an honor that for a long time I think Iowa State is in that situation.
Now.
Nebraska, we think of that Oklahoma State glory.
Waste of time, guys.
Yes.
For sure.
First period, a three minute first period with nothing to show for it for either man.
Iowa, 13, Iowa, three state three After five matches, whoever ranked number four in the nation and Wheldon was ranked earlier in the year.
But coming out of the lineup knocked him out of the out of the rankings.
Yes.
So it shows both men cautions there's Weber on the leg, but well, again, good position kept him off.
When you're young and you have learned that something about position when a man goes in like that and you're often on your off your base, you go down like a tree being chopped in the middle in the forest.
But you noticed that whoever is in a very strong, solid position here against this single leg attack from Wheldon, rather than doing the right thing here, coming up to get his hips underneath him and turn it into something where he can either dump in trying to catch the handles.
But whoever is doing a nice job will have to watch the knee angle there, I'm sure.
Yep.
No, pretty outside, potentially dangerous.
Oh, yes.
30 seconds to go.
In the first period, Wheldon asked for time for just a second and I'm not quite sure why this is crunch time here where if you can take the man down, you can you can get to without an answer.
Nice shot by Webber.
But again, good hips and Wheldon flexes through his front headlock.
No one likes to bang your head and stay up on that head and stance down and go around.
Webber's a little better when he's tapping and going.
You hear of Mike Tyler in recent years.
It was a lot of that.
No score.
We've had several first periods a win without a score.
Remember choosing 35 against Iowa State?
All the losses coming right here.
Of course, Dan Gable, his alma mater, Iowa State.
And you got to know those five losses.
He probably, you know, decided that it was just something a gift that he got to give to his alma.
He got an alumni achievement award this year from his old Colorado two.
Just kidding.
Of course, he'd do anything to win.
However, it looks like he's almost out and he is out there.
It took about 14 seconds, so Weber is up one nothing.
So Weber needs to for him to go to work right there, tap and go.
And that's what he did tap to head dropped in on single.
Now he's trying to cut across and control the hips.
So can he get it done.
Oh nice move.
Very nice shot is is up arms route traveling on a three call and then gathered in the hips it automatically gathered in the hips by the technique that he used.
Nice job he Russell Jarell Weber great strength you on Tuesday day in Iowa.
Very well done one three in Colorado wrestling gentlemen on the score and looking hard to score just solid improvement year to year from Darrell Weber is now a junior high.
He works so hard he's just really good.
He's strong.
He's the kind of young man we've talked about it before that you want your room putting a lot of pressure, bit on.
Hey, thank you.
You did that.
Here's the finish of the single leg right here.
But look at there.
He drove through threading the needle there and grab the ankle.
Now the hips are on the mat, see?
And now all he has to do is come up and he's got the two points.
Most time you see yourself stretching across trying to reach those hips.
And he just reached through trap the ankle and drove.
Weber was warned Mike Pyle thought he was doing more shoving than turning in that position just a moment ago.
And so the warning with 30 seconds to go, so well done, the score.
He's got to come off more.
He's got to come out of the tripod, though.
He's got to get his hips underneath and get some action and some explosion going.
You don't do much scoring in a tripod position and a Weber half Nelson.
The tight waist is really keeping Wheldon down now.
It's been very frustrating for Wheldon underneath it.
Now he's out and right there with it right there.
And he got the one good fight by very wells in there.
He did what he had to do to get here.
But it's a minute and 6 seconds of riding time, a potential point for Webb, Bobby Douglas, the downward vision for the third period, 1992 Olympic coach.
And he's going to be on the staff for the world team this year.
Dan Gable, the head coach of the World Cup team, both these head coaches, two prominent figures in international wrestling, two USA wrestling's top coaches 3 to 1, and Weber just wrap wraps in the tight waist controls and they arrest the team out three two as well and comes out.
So as a one point difference, Weber had the control on the feet.
He had the one takedown that we've seen well, and the takedown needs to go well in his way this time to be in this match, he's got to create the situation, initiate the moves.
One warning so far against Weber, and especially with that warning on Weber Wheldon, should be slapping around, working for the inside, dropping levels.
Anything he can do to get the official watching, get Weber you know thinking and instead three guys working it.
There's not a lot of action change in levels.
He's not changing levels a lot.
There's a Weber as you see now again front headlock, but with a minute and 5 seconds.
Ken Well, to make something out of his hands, tried to turn with it try to the take trying to just just power Weber over but that's pretty tough to do.
Well he's waiting too.
I mean, when you sit there and you deliver it, you get you give your opponent the opportunity also.
But Weber doesn't want to be is underneath like that and waste a lot of time 50 seconds to go And Weber leads Wheldon three two to the takedown in the second period was the difference so far 40 seconds to go so far the action has been by Weber he's been now there's a little bit of change in level in the shot by Wheldon 30 seconds in seven.
And Wheldon is going to have to make a movie as him glance over to his bench for a little help.
And I think instincts going to have to do it for him.
Roland's got to go.
He just has to do it.
And all you have to do 10 seconds.
Well, you know, I would say would like to think that I was stalling here, but I was staying.
Hasn't been doing much themselves.
And so it's just the match is going to end 3 to 2 and it's a32 to win for Weber and the winter time I was riding time makes it to and a frustrating loss for very well they're a good tight win by number four ranked Daryl Webber his 21st win in 23 matches and Iowa goes up 6 to 3 pretty close for a 16 to 3 meet as well.
With the exception of 150.
We've gone into the third period with every other wave where anybody could win, and that's the improvement this Iowa State team has seen.
They're a good team.
We talked about that.
And it's just it's just good to see Harrison gets them.
Danner Another freshman, right, 167, bound for Rochester, New York, and against the Rockets and Derrick Rose, another third ranked Hawkeyes, third ranked Hawkeyes serial Manero, who is 21 and five, Guess Indiana doing awfully well in his first.
But of course, he's a little green.
Yeah, I mean, he's stepping right out of the high school where he posted 131 and 12 record at Rochester, New York, at E.J.
Wilson High School.
And he was ranked as the sixth best 160 pounder in high school by amateur wrestling news last year.
But big difference, stepping into a fifth year senior Matt NEREM and against Rey Brands, who will be the Hawkeye won 77 Iowa State will counter with either Steve Kelly or Matt Mulvihill.
We'll see Dereham's come on this year he's put together has line year he's beaten two national champions and Marcus Mollica and Mark Branch and and he 167 just seems to be the perfect weight for him He's he's real lean but he's strong he's good basic he's overcome a lot of deficiencies that he's had over the last couple of years.
And he's got good defense as well as good offense.
Dan Gable has to be real pleased with the progress of Sean Ellis for the world.
Now, this things I look at on the Iowa State bench and things are a little quiet and I think the crowd is a little quiet, too.
With the score 6 to 3.
This is the place where Iowa State's going to have to suck it up and make a real shot here to keep it from getting a little listless and surreal.
Jason Danner is in there with a tough guy to do it.
All Sheryl has to do is wrestle like his predecessors did because there was no listlessness about the way the cyclones have been wrestling.
Low single didn't work great just in Denver.
Picked that one off the leg and so we're back even with 135 to go in the three minute first period at Hilton Coliseum with Tim Johnson.
I'm Doug Brown on Iowa public television's coverage of Iowa and Iowa State.
There's a long shot by Gibson Danner.
He's in and he has the patented move by Matt near him as he spins around.
Gibson down here couldn't get his base back in time and stalemate.
But of course, we just got to remember that, you know, arguably this is one of the best teams, if not the best team Dan has ever put on the mat.
Here's Iowa State coming in and going one in two point overtime, matches, hanging tough, improving.
This is just a great test for them.
A great test for Iowa, by the way, because Iowa State is come on has come on so strong this year, so good for college wrestling, good for Iowa Iowans.
A minute to go now.
There's Bobby on the right.
He's building a program here that looks a lot and thinks a lot, wrestles a lot, like the way he wants them to think and look and wrestle and with a lot of tenacity and and never give up.
He doesn't want him to ever give up.
Remember last year it was a very close match down at Iowa.
Iowa was not as strong as they are this year.
Their nice little drag by dropped into a single cut off.
Oh, good execution.
Nice.
Scrambling by guess at to avoid the and take it down still zero zero with 32 seconds left Matt and there you see again we talk about position and stability out there and you see it there.
You know, no matter what what anybody does out there, they have to do it against a solid rock.
He's kind of he's come a long way.
Just this year.
I think that Aron has his timing wasn't quite where it needed to be at the first year and and for offense he's scoring and now he's taking a better shot.
He's better at letting not letting others get in on him as much as he has.
And he's got some nice shots and executing well.
Well, he's definitely become more active in this first period now, especially late than surrogates.
And Downer was a little bit back on his heels.
Well, that's the way now likes to keep him just a few seconds to go in this three minute first period.
Iowa, 16, Iowa three.
We're at £167, no scores in the first first period.
There's gray bronzer.
You got that Losing rocker turn three.
What does that mean, all-American?
Two years ago, it was kept from being an all-American by losing a couple of times in some NCAA games last year.
Easy for me to say, Get some dinner on top.
I don't think you will be very long here.
Comes near at eight when you're out makes it one to nothing.
The U.S. and again there I'm go setting just keeps boring ahead in there and then dropping down more and more on the legs.
Justin Tanner has been able to stop him that time when the near him arrive kissing Tanner wasn't there, not kissing Darrin on the leg against a whistler counter.
How about to?
That's shot as a nice shot.
Nice execution.
You see, a rookie is able to execute really well, get Some better two points and a happy cycling fan, right?
They're able to stay with their cover.
The hips come up two points.
And Tommy Ortiz goes about three feet up in the air.
His assistant coach that you saw in the background put their arms out trying to score two to right away.
He can't hold him.
Oh, we're at 167 Iowa and Iowa State again gets him Tanner shot puts it where he needs to be doing more of that great.
He has the one takedown, two to Matt Merriman.
Now, the Iowa State bench is excited again.
They'd like to upset this number three ranked Matt Maren, but Matt is coming out the way he usually does.
Nice on three and he goes ahead for to two.
We'll get some better.
I was able to get a takedown and it was the first takedown for Iowa State since Cody Tate's three takedowns and those are the only ones Iowa State had.
That's right.
So they score takedowns for them, guys.
And so you'd have to say that again.
Takedowns dictate the success in the match.
So now for the first time, their arm is in the upright position and he's demonstrating the body, which is a warning against Tanner underneath, because my file says you need to have some kind of a plot here, plan to get out.
Well, NEREM here is working on something that needs to come way and and really work for him as he goes into the national tournament because he's a good rider, but he hasn't been real controlling and he needs to be able to control the hips, be able to really put this with crunch on on top to beat the best for end of the period.
Now, Bobby Douglas came over to the bench and asked to talk Mike Castle right now and I'm not quite sure we've got him One of us has got a leg injury, nothing we can do.
If you can hold the bass right here, that choice is what Bobby Douglas was saying, was that how can you call stalling?
He was on his face near the legs and there's nothing that gives him that can do.
And so therefore, he shouldn't be stalling on them if anyone should be on near him.
And Mike Pyle said, I hear you.
Yes, that gets him down or had his choice and he picks up.
He does not want to go in the under position against there.
I'm there.
I don't blame him.
Nahum is very tough on top and Jason Jenner's is a freshman and some has no trouble on the bottom in other places.
But here he is trying to use his quickness the feet well he if he can keep mixing it up if he can bring it home now in the third period and stay mixing it up, he has a good shot to take it near him down, make it a big match to this going into overtime.
There's no riding time.
So it's a straightforward two to he excuse.
This is a 14 Iowa state can bring cyclones right back into it you know and so yeah you know we haven't seen anything come close to that but we're still where something big that gets better.
Being as quick and as powerful as is, you just never know what could happen.
And that's how the Cyclones have to think.
You know, that there's always an opportunity out there.
And I see him thinking that way more.
Guys, let's go 16 to 3.
I think there's a tough shot by some Indiana that he has only a minute now to go and it's a 4 to 2 lead for the Hawks.
Matt and Aram, your guys looking and the Iowa team leads, having won the close ones here.
But you're 16 to 3 and there have been some close ones right there in front of you.
He's right in your face.
And that's what Dan Gable saying.
Get after him.
Get in his face.
Let's score takedowns.
You have to get around him somehow.
And he doesn't let you do that very well.
And he just keeps coming.
30 seconds to go.
That was in there.
I'm shocked.
There's how they make the next time that happens.
Listen, Denver's going to get hit when he walked off the mat to avoid any more scrambling.
But he's hanging 25.
It's true, freshman right there.
You almost get the sense that maybe that's what he knows.
I'm a true freshman.
I'm doing pretty good for that.
And he's got to take that next go to the next level there and believe in luck.
Generally here he comes around but doesn't just drop pretty quick.
We're good.
Get down now.
We only have 5 seconds to go and it looks much better for narrow takedown would put it in overtime and there it's going to end nice in order to keep the pressure on getting better, not giving him a chance to score that last second takedown.
Another close one won by the Hawks fortitude.
You know, on a night when they are close.
He has a couple of people out, both teams down, I think has to be happy that he's winning those calls, which, oh, yeah, that's a that's a mark of what you were looking for.
True champions win all the close matches, and true champions have close matches because you're always being shot at.
Now Matt Mulvihill is coming in at £177 for Iowa State.
He is a redshirt freshman from Dowling West on a one state title in high school.
He had three places, but he's up against Andre Abramson for the Buckeyes and him before Smith and Oklahoma State last week.
Experience.
He's talented and he's aggressive out there, so it should be interesting.
Matt Mulvihill first chance to wrestle.
BRENNER And that's the problem because he can't continue right here.
Back.
I mean, what do you say?
He is just awfully dangerous and he's intuitive.
He can end it right here.
Oh, he could earn it.
Well well, I'm a little tired tonight.
I think in the early 24 seconds.
I've never seen anyone have more fun at the sport than Abramson.
I mean, and I'm not saying it's just fun when you're ten and 24 seconds that he has fun all the time, win or lose.
And the fans, well, the Hawkeyes fans will love it.
A big win for him.
The first big fan right here, He inside hooks right there.
Inside Trip catches the hit walk on the way down.
Now he just he could have come out to the outside and had a conventional head lock.
But you see, as he slips out with his hip, he's going to step back over there.
He came all the way to the other side, kept the headlock opposite headlock, and then went chest to chest, chest and one and hit this man in 24 seconds on 25 to 3 lead for Iowa.
Boy, you know, he's had some close matches here and Iowa's 25 to 3.
And boy, then one comes along like that and yeah, real trouble.
Ah, you're not going to see Joel Sheridan at £190.
He has been ill.
Okay.
Before I get 195 today.
And so Kurt Heitman, you have seen him this year, 177 before Bridges Windsor is apparently hiding out there for the 170 job and Hyde is filling in for Joel Share.
It's the number one ranked defending national champion at this weight against Rob Steiger of Iowa State, ranked number 11.
Kurt Heitman of New Hampton High School won two heavyweight wrestling championships when he was in high school in Hampton has done very well this year at 177 and weighed in looking to fill in for Joel Sharrett today at 190.
See how this one comes out.
Hi demon losing wrestle lost to Berenger at 177.
But here because I'll tell you this man that young man that loves to wrestle and she time state champion out of New Hampton wants to be in the Hawkeye lineup and here he is ready to go when he's needed.
He's that kind of guy.
He's a ready to go guy.
That's always going to give hundred percent for Dan Gable for anything.
He does a lot of talent on this Iowa team, A lot of talent on this Iowa State team.
You look at and they they wrestle hard.
They wrestle, obviously, since they had a future, you didn't even see it.
But still, the score is 25 to 3.
Just giving you some indication of how good this Hawkeye team is, even with a couple of faces not out there.
Now, Heidemann has been as high as £220 in football.
He's he's lean now and he's at 190 today.
He's down on 177 most of the year.
And but he was as high as 20 when he walked onto the Iowa football team and decided at wrestling more where he should be and very strong when we had a rough on the edges as a wrestler, though, and we haven't heard a lot about the difficulties of going to 177, he just doesn't a lot of difference from where he was in high school stagger he just continue to move and transfer from our when Drake dropped their program, he got new life here at Iowa Sta joining record That's Joel Scherrer he's got this year and NCAA champion last year and kind of recovering from sickness and wants to be ready in about two weeks for the Big Ten Oh Stagger got under and hit him and flipped him but he couldn't keep him there and Stinger was able dodged a bullet.
Wouldn't have that been something So that shows his strength He just powered stinger over on a going underneath down no score.
We have 25 seconds to go in the first period between, Iowa and Iowa State was designed to make a believer of you.
I'll tell you, we lose.
And they missed a couple of people here and are still ahead of this Iowa State team 25 to 3 AB Hilton In spite of the fact that Iowa State has been working hard, aggressive out there, I was more at the end of the first period score.
I know that when Iowa State beat Oklahoma last week, Bobby Douglas's little disturbances, we only had 11 takedown to start.
He was a little concerned about the takedown situation and he and he has reason to be concerned again tonight.
QUALIFIER Last year, Robby Stager was also Dyersville Beckman where Jason Murray is from and teammates at Dyersville.
Beckman High School on opposite ends of the wrestling lineup.
Vitamin gets to his feet, breaks the hands and comes out for the first point of match.
It's one to nothing in favor of the hawk.
I think the one thing that Robby Steger is going to need to be is in good shape to go against Kurt Heineman.
He works hard.
They both work hard.
They're great kids and it's if it comes down to shape, it'll be interesting because it's a matter of third period sometimes.
Yeah.
And vitamins, very strong.
I think he may have more sheer physical power than Glen Steger, too, but Tiger's been working a lot on technique.
He's done extremely well, especially this year.
He's won some big matches.
There's height of manure on the leg, and he's in a position now to get himself in a little trouble.
Well, Sager did a nice job of keeping it's going to get a stalemate called it right on the edge.
Out of bounds.
Mike Piles, as I've seen enough here, 49 seconds to go in.
The second period, Titan leads by one.
And that was not a stalemate.
It was out of bounds.
And they start on their feet.
Oh, my goodness.
Me and I tied him and gets in close.
Heineman likes to work the head really hard.
You see that in the tie up.
He looks a little more bullish, you know, than stagger Stagger wants to get a set up that he can use his slickness low man has almost anything like that Ram tough commercial right there.
They hit heads big time injury time.
They both were shooting at the same instant and high was able to be on top, stop the head and zip around.

That's March 4th.
And here we go back to Iowa and Iowa State's first take down the £190 match, hide them in Pakistan.
Stay here.
Now, after the escape, it's three one in favor of the hawk.
Good escape by Stager.
He came up with his hips underneath him and he had good hand control and earned his way out.
Nice, explosive, hard working job by.
Rob Stagger.
Don't suppose that kind of figures, no matter who I wrestle against, it, isn't as tough as wrestling Ray Brant and Joel Sharon asking for him.
Well, at least he can be a little more ready.
A predictive there.
I mean, Bobby Douglas, his man, is trailing 3 to 1 going into the third period.
Stagger will start down, Larry up again.
Good fight Good job by Rob Stagger three to match and no riding time 3 to 2 but staggered has not finished controlling the things on top on the feet and Hardiman has been strong in that tie up there is where he is right now with a really stiff front headlock.
Well, he's controlling the situation when you control the head, he's really you can see those muscles in there.
You see it and their arms level.
And he's still nice job right there coming down.
Now he just needs to keep stagger inbounds.
He's going to do the old tree chop tree top and trip and stagger comes rolling through and saves himself actually, because he executed that role very well.
Yes, he did.
He dies, Drew, and it was enjoyable for the fans and they applauded right there.
But that's because on was extended right there and he didn't keep his hips down, his knees bent at heavyweight.
We're going to have Jeff Simpson for Iowa State against Eric Stoner of Iowa Castroneves from just up the road here in Webster City.
It would look that it would I there's some talk that it could be somebody else, but I don't think it's going to be.
We'll see.
Here's Rob Steger against Kurt Heitman, 3 to 2 in 45 seconds.
And here we are again in one of these close ones.
And Iowa has been winning all of the close ones with the exception.
Well, it wasn't a first one of 34 when Iowa State got its win.
The state time and keep the pressure on.
Steger needs to just really mix it up.
He has to go until the end, till the horn sounds right.
Now, the power behind him and he had the underhook and he was able to stay under there.
Stay here.
Can't stay out of there.
That's right.
He's got to come up.
Good job by Steger not staying under there.
18 seconds to go.
He's got to bang his he's got to bang some heads right there.
This is crunch time for Staker.
He needs to do this right now.
He's got an opportunity right here to take a get a takedown and win for the cyclones.
What is really going to a warning to Heineman but he'll accept it.
I think it it's a little late to get penalized.
Down to 10 seconds.
Who's bigger is a little late.
Yeah, that's the man.
Yeah, I guess.
Takedowns at Iowa State.
The knockout against Iowa and kind in terms of 177 wins at 190.
Well, I'll tell you what, I was mistaken after all my information was that Matt Carson was a little injured and he's going to wrestle in heavyweight against Iowa, 28 to 3 out for Iowa over Iowa State.
And how many calls from somebody?
One.
We'll go look it up here for you in just a second.
There is Eric Schroeder.
He's not far from home, but that's the way his start.
People say, look at him.
He is hitting his heavyweights.
Well That's the way you get Eric Strong already.
And the Webster City match 80 miles away in Iowa, watching fire wrestling match the, arson of Iowa State and Schroeder.
You know, they're fighting right now.
Oh, this is the killer move for Stoner right off the whistle can.
He beat brings his 24 is what he's thinking.
A lot of close runs and maybe a couple of hands is at least one fan.
He doesn't have a headlock.
I'm not sure.
Doesn't have the headlock.
A legal one and illegal holds, Conor, and then makes it slipped off.
It's not hitting arm and he actually just had to hit an injury time out in person so that was eventful.
Instead of a pin we have a 3 to 1 at 5 to 1 situation.
Dan Gable is talking it over with Mike Kyle whose that I was able to get.
If I had to do it again, I had to dance.
It satisfies things.
He'd prefer to have the fans and his store owner of course the junior transfer from Northwestern, he lets just Northwestern University a Webster City product competition for the Ohio State.
Mike Carson, senior from Osceola Park School, making the PGA Club merge.
There's Matt Carson, who has a reputation of being tough to pin, actually.
And he's been hurt.
He's been out of the lineup for a while and he's back in against Stoner.
Still is great.
And boy, Stoner is in a whirlwind here.
In the first minute or so, 5 to 1, he leaves you know your question before five matches won by two points or less.
Yes, I've been won by Iowa.
That's really important.
And it shows you how close they actually are.
But Iowa won them all.
All those matches, all the close ones.
There's a young man.
It's not ranked in the top 12 in the nation in stoner, but he's beaten some of the top wrestlers, a number four ranked Dan Payne from Clarion was stuck by Stoner earlier in the year.
Headlock and storeowners dangerous and he he's going to be right in there so out it comes Big ten and NCAA time.
Matt Carson, a senior from Clark High School in Osceola, Iowa State, does have two heavyweights and Carson has been hurt by but he's back in against Stoner.
But Stoner needs to do is really bang on the body and not get too high when he's on on on right there and have Carson be able to slide him off and catch him right there.
That's exactly what Carson wants to do this catch Schroder to high and sliding down right there like that to get his hips on the mat and try to turn into a rock Stoner kept a half Nelson in so it does matter Carson couldn't turn on him everybody Rick we aren't even halfway through the first period 5 to 1 in favor of stoner love this action with the heavyweights roll by Carson fails my Kyle's going to watch the angle on the knee there.
I get really Stoner clarified that position by rolling Carson on through a flat off his base.
He leads 5 to 1 with just a little over a minute to go.
Let's see.
This is a tough position right here.
Stoners getting late.
His hips are on the mat.
It's dangerous.
He's trying to get it to him.
He's scoring.
But Carson, all he needs to do is catch the head one time, pull him over, and Stoner comes out on top.
Now, tough.
He's in a better position now.
He has a two point near-fall by an air fellow.
Makes it 7 to 1.
He had his license back.
He's Living dangerously.
Yeah, well, he's 7 to 1 up on dangerous purity with less than a half a minute to go.
In the first period here, it's been all stoner.
Now, as his effort goes, that will go ahead.
I was gonna say Matt Carson, the referee, blew the whistle to start the match, and Matt wasn't quite on the mat yet.
You know what I mean?
Boom.
Stoner had him.
Stoner.
So backbones there, aside from the foals that we've had in the that we had in the meet, those are the first back points all night long.
No.
In other words, nobody's been able to get off his back right.
And stoner controls the arm is his is working on Carson really well here on top at the end of the first period, 7 to 1, he has scored eight.
How much riding time does he have?
Almost £3 of riding time.
We're going to go to the feet again here.
We'll see if Stoner can recreate what he had earlier or see if Carson can come out a little more ready, 3 to 50 for a riding time.
How about that?
He had Carson on his back inside 6 seconds in the first period.
So Carson, I suspect, will be looking for things like a headlocks.
But the score is 7 to 1 in favor of stoner of Iowa.
The Hawks lead 28 to 3.
They've won a lot of close matches here to score one in an overtime of 126 over Hanson and then two pins to make it spicy.
Dig up on the concourse.
They got a fall from 177 and earlier they had more.
And get ready for a concert tomorrow.
I would like to start it.
Well, if you would, please.
Here we are at heavyweight in the minutes.
Go in the second, third, we have some thank you's we're going to make for the season, signing autographs, all the people that helped us.
University of Iowa Athletic director Bob Bowles be social athletic director Larry Bruner, a single, the opposite leg of the storeowner trying to come through.
Carson's got a lot of length right there.
STOREOWNER trying to use his legs, his arms in neutral, heavyweight scramble.
But this is you know, it's not slow motion.
It is the heavyweight scramble.
You're right there.
Schroeder kicks.
Good, his hips off the mat, come up, he'll be in control here.
But what Carson like to do is keep those hips down on the mat.
So tell me tell me what Mike Pyle says is neither of you doing what you want to do, We're going to call it cut a quick 7 to 1 strong our second period.
Also, Rick Clark, Phil Handy, the sports information director, Dell Gursky facilities manager, Kelly Gray, assistant facilities manager.
And Dan Gable, of course, the wrestling coach and his staff at Iowa and Iowa State.
Gene Smith, athletic director Elvie Haver, average Associate athletic director Tom Pro, Shell Wrestling sports information director and a really nice guy.
Randy Baumeister, Hilton Technical and Bobby Douglas coaching his staff here at the end of the second period.
Now we have 2 minutes left in this meet, 2 minutes to go strong and lead 7 to 1, Stoner says.
My time, I'll start down I see Bruins are up there in the right talking with the register writer Mark Hanson and one game runner and both both of a philosophical turn of mind I say and Stoner is out very quickly makes it 8 to 1 go through and for northern Iowa too we want to thank Chris Retriever athletic Director Kevin Kane, sports information director for wrestling Jim Bagley, the facilities Manager.
Dave Coors, assistant goal manager and coaching staff of Don Briggs.
Nice little single by Carson there, but he wasn't able to come up and finish it out So nice shot Honor keeps him from finishing it and we ought to say a few other thank you's to our statistics.
Man wants to be thanked and we really we do need to thank you.
And that's Roger Crimmins, floor director extraordinaire.
Right.
He's the man who counts the takedowns and counts the escapes near Falls.
And I'll never tell how many of the great comments that are attributed to us are.
Roger, Same from him.
That's Right.
And how many others that weren't so great game for him to tie up a minute?
14 to go in the Iowa Iowa State made a golden coliseum.
Here's a warning against Schroeder.
Iowa.
He leads 8 to 1.
Carson loses his head gear and he will be given time to put it back on again.
A minute and 4 seconds to go again.
Probably Dan Gable thinking this is good.
Just didn't come out with that big pin right there.
I want to he says.
I want to see him all the way through in a place like Hilton.
I want to see him go 7 minutes.
I want to see him turn it on in the last minute.
Well, yeah, he's getting the shot right here.
He had a very big start.
He working gentleman and yes, nice job.
Take her to the first takedown he's had since the first period, but a very nice one.
10 to 1, 10 to 1.
He's going to let him go.
We're going to speak with Carson.
He has a major decision in prospect.
Oh, nice shot by Carson.
Neal.
The hips came tumbling down on him and stopped him in his tracks.
And then he started.
He spun around.
Nice use of his body.
Really is he wrestles like a 190 pounder more than he does a heavyweight and doing a nice job of moving out there in the last 20 seconds of the match, 12 to 3.
Now, after that escape, working the head up, dropping down to the legs coming across, he's going to try to cut across.
Now he does it again and he has a big finish.
He's going to keep going, keep him flat right here and finish it out.
And with riding time, he'll win 15 to 3 remaining major possession for every corner.
He has a big, big catch for Schroeder right there.
And that was probably a blessing as far as the Hawkeyes are concerned, that he didn't get the ball and they had to see him work it out and he said, I can work it out.
I'll tell you what, Iowa, all his post matches all this tough stuff all of times at Iowa State looked good here and they still lose 32 to 3 to this great Iowa team.
I think he said it right.
Great Iowa team, great coach, a 1.11. win for Mike Minter, a two point win in overtime for McInnis over Henson and a six point win for Iowa State, The only one they had, 134 tied over Kevin Hogan again on Saturday.
Two points over.
ANNOUNCER Big one.
Then Marco Rubio had a major decision over Bono.
Boy, did he look good.
Well done, Vero Lost by two to Daryl Weber.
Weber looked good there by two over and get some dinner then Brender and 24 seconds Ben and Matt Mulvihill boys stand in right at them right away to New York.
And then a 190 Joel Sherrill was out.
So Kurt Heitman beat Rob Steger by 1.4 and Eric Strong and that was it.
Finished it off with a major decision over.
Matt Carr She'll score 15 to 3 and so final of 32 to 3, which is just about the same general area that Iowa has been.
Everybody right, The average has been 34 to 6.
And they just were consistent all the way through.
This is a great Iowa team.
It really is March.
And this is Iowa and Iowa State team.
That's as good as anybody else in the country.
That's right.
And Nick Thurman, and already they've gone down to Stillwater and beat Oklahoma State.
They've done it.
They've beaten Nebraska.
They have proven that they're as good a team.
Aside from Iowa City.
They're awfully young.
They're just really young because Iowa's young, too.
I mean, this is a great team that Dan Gable has.
Well, the tournaments are next, and it's going to be the big eight for Iowa State, of course, the Big Ten for Iowa, and then on to the Nationals, which will be in Iowa City this year.
Sold out.
Sold out already.
We'll have some fun next week, too, in our own tournament there As we look at some of the wrestlers from Iowa signing autographs, we have the big winner to help.
And that's a veterans auditorium in Des Moines where all the best wrestlers in Iowa, the high schoolers get together and meet viruses, go down that main street and say, I'm the toughest kid in the state of my way.
You said it best, the next generation, and we'll be seeing them soon here on College Wrestling series.
It's a lot of fun and we've enjoyed being with you this year.
Remember we had on it, we had an address to call you.
Just let us know if you like something you don't like something.
We enjoyed bringing this to you, Tim.
Thanks a lot for all the work with you.
This is a pleasure, Doug and all our people out in the truck.
Well, once again, the final score is Iowa, 32, Iowa State, three.
