Either the University of Iowa or Iowa State has won the NCAA team title in 19 of the last 24 years.
So when new Iowa State coach Bobby Douglas said he took the job to be close to the fire, he meant he wanted to be in wrestling's hotbed and to compete against this man, Dan Gable, whose Hawkeyes are the two time defending national champions.
Tonight, the two former Olympic coaches meet for the first time in this intense intrastate rivalry, a series that has produced some startling upsets.
In fact, you can always expect the unexpected.
When Iowa and Iowa State squared off in college wrestling.
From the Coliseum in Ames, Iowa.
Iowa Public Television sports brings you college wrestling.
The third ranked Iowa Hawkeyes versus the sixth ranked Iowa State cyclones.
Hello, everybody.
I'm Doug Brown with Tim Johnson.
And here we are on the scene for our final 1993 meet we in our 17th season and what a place to come.
Hilton Coliseum are they're going to wrestle the Nationals next month.
We'll give you an address later on for you to write with comments about our season, if you'd like more.
A.J., here we are with two teams who have dominated this sport for how many years?
Well, since the seventies, in the 19 early 1970s, Iowa State won five national titles under coach Harold Nichols.
And then something very special happened at the University of Iowa.
Mr. Dan Gable became their coach, and all he's done is won 11 out of the last 15 national titles.
Yes, that was a sea change when Gable went to Iowa.
Now, maybe another sea change, is it when Bobby Douglas comes to Iowa State?
Well, that's why Iowa State hired Bobby Douglas.
They knew that he had something special.
In fact, there has been only two coaches for the Olympic team for the United States since 1976.
Dan Gable and Bobby Douglas.
And tonight, Douglas gets his first test in Iowa country against Gable.
We saw Iowa beat Ohio State 24 to 13 last night.
Another very good team.
And maybe Dan Gable had some of those question marks in the middle of his lineup removed.
Well, I think he's very pleased.
And you're right, it was right in the middle of his lineup, right in the heart.
158 167 177 Weber, near him and still in awe, came through with strong performances and right in the nick of time because tonight there's a lot of tough matches and it starts right out at 118 where Chad's capital is going up against his arch rival, Erick Aiken.
They've wrestled eight times already in their career.
This is the first time this year, last year, all five of their matches were decided by less than two points.
Erick Aiken, he is a two time all-American for Iowa State.
He's only a junior going for his third all-American place this year.
He's strong, he's tough, he's aggressive, and he can put you on his back like he does.
Brad Brule from northern Iowa.
Here he is really tough.
And he better be tonight because he's going up against a guy that's had his number, Chad's capital.
Very few people know that he was hurt last year when he finished second in the nation.
Well, he's healthy now.
He's on top of his game and he can put you on his back right there like he did to Mickey Nunez from Arizona State last week.
He is really tough and he's looking to really get after a national championship this year.
118 is important.
You got to get the momentum.
Well, for Iowa State.
I think all the weight classes are in place all year and there are several very early where you might say Iowa is favored, but it's going to be close to our tossups that Iowa State wants to win.
And then you get to 150.
Talk about a rivalry here.
We have people who are meeting for the 13th time and there are wonderful careers.
We have Torrie Jackson at Iowa State.
He's fast.
He's explosive and powerful.
He is an all-American.
Here you see him against Steve Hartle of you and I in one of his past takedowns.
But he's up against an undefeated wrestler this year in Terry Steiner.
This is the first time these two men have met in 1993, Terry Steiner is only undefeated in 24 matches.
In his workmanlike, aggressive, powerful fashion.
He pins people and beats them up, including Reid Monahan of North Carolina.
That's going to be at 150.
But there are a lot of important matches before then.
One of the keys to this meet Terry.
Terry, I'm thinking of Terry stylistic.
He's got to win all the close ones.
That's right.
And Iowa has to win the ones that they expect to win, right?
It's the Hawkeyes and the Cyclones.
Next on college wrestling, where back at Hilton Coliseum in Ames, Iowa, for the match between the third ranked Iowa Hawkeyes and the sixth ranked Iowa State cyclones in the series that Iowa leads 3514 and to Iowa won last year in a single meeting.
We're going to take a look at the matchups tonight.
There are a couple of weights where we're not quite sure who will be in there.
You don't see any of the first five weight classes, however, get up to 158 and you'll begin to see that the Iowa has a couple of people weighed in at £167, although they weighed in that narrow last night.
And Keith Trammel also never did wrestle last night.
So it is Iowa and Iowa State.
Here are the 118 pounders ready to go.
The coaches are ready.
The wrestlers are ready.
The referee is ready.
He is Pat McCormick of Hampton, Virginia.
Now, Pat McCormick is the you might say, the the leader of referees.
He's the NCAA national wrestling officiating coordinator.
And you'll hear him on a microphone as we have him miked out there.
And you'll be able to listen to what he has to say as the wrestlers go capital undefeated again, 26 and three, very active and powerful this year.
As T.J. told you, they're meeting for the ninth time.
So that powerful snap down position goes for the leg.
And he has taken on his back immediately.
But he doesn't have any points even for takedown yet.
This is this is one of those unusual situations in wrestling that McCormick is saying no advantage yet.
Aiken is a good scrambler.
So right now, the Iowa State wrestler Eric Aiken's in big trouble, it looks like, but no takedown.
We'll take that.
He's the kind of wrestler that can get out of something that looks almost impossible to get out.
He likes to be on that in that scramble situation.
But I wouldn't like to be in this situation right here if I was.
AIKEN Stalemate and they can manage to come out of it.
Dan Gable is furious.
He wants to have a little discussion with the dean of the referees out no stars.
They go back to the center again.
Well used about a minute, 30 seconds.
That's the maddest I've seen.
Dan Gable in the in the opening moments of a match ever.
He feels that there were four points there, at least two and two right off the bat by Chad's capital against Erick Aiken.
He was beside himself and the referee told him to sit back down.
This is going to be exciting, Joe.
They lock up again.
Chappell again likes that head front headlock position, and Aiken has not been able to get his offense rolling because of the position that Capital is held in the title.
This is £118 between Iowa State's Erick Aiken and Iowa's Chad Capital now, guys, Jackson, Jackson.
But like I said, Chad's capital likes to dominate on the field.
He likes to work the head.
He likes to snap down and penetrate again that snap down.
Now see how he controls that head First is into the body and penetrates Eric Aiken.
I'll just say he's not all that great on his feet.
He's a better mat wrestler, but he's tough to penetrate on.
So he's got good defense on his feet.
But he has trouble penetrate and he telegraphs his moves a little bit with the drop step that if he could attack from a little bit closer in, he'd be better off.
Number one, stopping all against number four, Aiken rand stalling.
There is a warning against Iowa State's Eric Aiken for inactivity.
Next time, it'll be a penalty.
Stay right there.
That's after working here.
Didn't happen down and then trying to catch Eric taken out of position and drop it down onto the legs.
You've seen Capitol on the attack this entire match.
And Aiken has not been able to set up what he wants in order to get any kind of a shot.
His capital has physically dominated him here, although he has not scored yet.
There's a beautiful Cedric did not get the back points.
He almost took Aiken to the back.
It's two nothing in favor of Chad's capital.
Good execution.
That's one thing about Chad's capital.
And if one thing doesn't work, two things don't work.
It comes back to the third.
Very well.
That was nice.
He'll pick there to pick it up for a match and right with the under 20 seconds left the match.
What a big one.
And that meant that Aiken could not escape.
To get a point back to first degree, Aiken had the choice he to say Underhook or ankle pick and he almost drives him to his back right there.
I said 20 seconds left in the match.
I'm at the first period, of course, starting the second period, it was Apatow's choice.
He does not want to go under or on top either one, just like I said, because he knows Eric Aiken where his strength is.
It's on the mat.
And so you don't want to go when you know that you can dominate on the feet, you want to stay there.
And he had his choice and he stayed up.
So capital leading to nothing in this Hawkeyes cyclone Boogie here at Hilton Coliseum in Ames, Both these wrestlers are strong wrestlers.
They're as strong as they come at one £18.
They're both well-conditioned right here.
But right now, as Apple has put an immense amount of pressure on Aiken throughout the first period, they'll be interested to see what kind of conditioning guys Aiken is in right now at this time of the year.
That's again, they lock horns.
It's nice to see.
But Apple is doing the he's beat more aggressive areas pushing Aiken back.
Aiken is not getting the position that he wants to take those quick shots that he wants to play.
And leading two to nothing is right where he wants to be.
That right now all he have to do is keep Aiken in the middle of the mat right there.
He's working the head, he's working the elbow, he's snapping, he's dropping around, doing a nice job of getting behind him.
But Aiken is Aiken has been in side.
It's Chad's capital of Iowa against Erik Aiken of Iowa State at £118 midway in the second period.
Kind of he's able to lead to all kind of easy for our viewers to see, which is Iowa State this year with Iowa State on the back of their uniforms.
That makes it easy.
Oh, well, now, remember when one was given to Aiken and if he backs away or does not get his shots in the way he would like to get, he could very well be penalized.
And he just was he just was poor.
But at this point, Doug, because really, there's been no offense yet by Erik Aiken for three just scored on starting good at that three nothing Underhook again for capital double Underhook oh but showing a lot of physical power, T.J. Well, yes, he's working the inside.
Well, this is the kind of type of attack that's going to being leveled.
It's going to work late in the man, and that's the end of the second period.
Really nothing in favor of guy pitching a shutout, much to the dismay of Bobby Douglas in his first Iowa Iowa State meet.
All Chad's capital has to do right here.
Stay in the attack.
It's as simple as that.
He's got the conditioning to.
All he needs to do is stay on the attack.
Right now, Erik Aiken has to get something going.
He has to mix it up.
He has to have some offense.
And right now he can at least score right here it is underneath as he had his choice in this third period.
And he's out three one right here.
Aiken needs to be back in on the legs trying to make something happen right here for Iowa State.
Otherwise, Chad's effort is going to take him right back where he's been for five straight minutes.
That's on the defense.
You get the break down.
It takes a minute for him to go in the match, the big first match down the seventh.
Well, the ninth go between these two in their careers.
Now, see what he's been able to do right there is keep his head, his arms above the head of Erik Aiken.
He's able to keep Eric Aiken in a position where he can't attack.
Now, that's good position.
But right now what's Apple trying to do is get in and score himself.
And that's what Gable's yelling doing right now.
He's also been changing levels very well.
His takedown was on a heel pick even though he's been fighting upper body here.
You see that?
The setup.
You understand what those are for?
You can see that capital has been able to pretty much dominate right there.
But that kind of move and keep Aiken away from his offense now tough on the head.
Three one he'll pick again out of bounds to because his supporting parts more in and it's now 5 to 1 in favor of the Hawkeyes another big takedown there it was it was 311 go for one here on the replay again, you see that little work on the head, Lauren, is level low shot to the ankle toes here in two points.
That's all you have to do is have your toes in and control live action again, another escape for Aiken.
But Zaffino has been dominant on his feet, leads 5 to 1.
Well, this is a great litmus test here, or whatever you want to call it, because you can see how much better Chad's capital is this year than he was last year against his arch rival right here.
Capital has just really improved and looked at Aiken has improved a good deal this year as well.
Now there is a quick move by capital, but Aiken was able to face off on it.
Still three points difference, five two with 20 seconds to go.
Hello, guys.
Come on, guys.
You hear Pat McCormick saying, Come on, guys, Possession.
Get that possession.
You got to get the take out.
That's where it's going to end.
And this is where it's going to be.
It's going to be five two.
A big win for the Hawkeyes after the no rating time.
But on decision for Chad's capital and the Hawkeyes, take the lead in the showdown with the cyclones.
310 out there.
That was capital and a most impressive performance.
And so the Hawkeyes go up.
Now we go to 126.
Here are a couple of sophomores in them as we look at chap's capital putting on his gear.
That's Rick Williams from Kansas City, Missouri.
He went to high school in Kansas at Oak Park.
He's a sophomore for the Cyclones and that is Eric Allen from Belle Play in Iowa in the lineup at 126 for the Hawkeyes this year.
Eric LAMB against Rick Williams at £126 at Hilton Coliseum with Iowa leading three to nothing.
I'll tell you what Williams is dangerous.
He can he can get you on your back and he can pin you.
And he's proven this year that he can wrestle at the in the starting lineup right now.
And he just needs that continue to build his confidence because he's a very talented young, young man that position and position.
Rick Williams so say Kansas City, Missouri.
But he went to high school, Kansas in Kansas at Oak Park, and there a Hall of Fame for the first pick down for the cyclones in this league.
And he has healing on the back and a tilt a two point NEAR-FALL it's a for nothing score.
Oh, look at this low level attack.
It's right in for a double nice penetration in both his arms and behind the knees of Alien.
He comes in, covers the hips and gets two points for a takedown.
You know, I did a little research.
He was a missouri state champion.
You were right.
Last time we talked about him.
Now again, it's women putting England on his back for another two point NEAR-FALL and impressive start here by the cyclone at £126.
Well, I believe that Kent Stryker was scheduled to wrestle tonight at 126, but didn't make the wait or there was at least a chance that he was going to wrestle.
And of course, we know the striker was in the Iowa lineup earlier, then got injured and didn't make weight.
Tonight.
Eric Allen in there for the second night in a row at 126 six.
Nothing.
Rick Williams, that young man.
And for the second night in a row, the fact that Allen's in there has given the opponent of Iowa some really supercharged momentum here.
Again that tilt again to see the referee counting a crowd of three.
If he got it five, it would be a three point NEARFALL oh oh.
And he did get it this time, a three point NEAR-FALL and nothing.
Williams has real control.
He's on his way to a technical foul.
He looks real supercharged himself.
He's got a nice tight way to hang.
He ties up the risk, loads up Allen on his hip.
Look, he wants the breaking down first.
One of the biggest mistakes a young man like Rick Williams does as he tries to turn them without breaking them down.
You need to break the man down and then turn nine.
Nothing lead.
He acts like he's heard about these Iowa.
Iowa State warriors came in this made very fire up Seattle again.
NELSON Look at that half.
NELSON He's loaded even dipped above his head right there, right in the lap.
And now he's got control.
We had him for the five right there, the five count.
Throw the tire one minute, 3 seconds to go.
In the first period, Eric Allen of Iowa trailing Rick Williams of Iowa State, nine to nothing.
Now it's 9 to 1 after Williams lets him out.
Williams is very capable of taking a man right there.
Well, he's just all over him like a cheap shoot.
Look at low level changed level 12 and just drove hit the middle right there Two points takedown battle about that 11 to 1 here in favor of the cyclone, 11 to 2 after the escape they're given by Williamson.
Here he comes again to 13 to 2.
And again, it's a straight ahead double play right underneath.
He has an 11 point lead and we're still in the first period.
You don't need that.
Hey, guys.
Come on, guys.
Come on, guys.
Crunch on the arm.
What a night for Williams.
Hey.
Tried to run the till again, but it happened out of bounds when he got.
Let's go back, put Allen over.
Allen was out of bounds and he can't get near four points out there.
Look at this.
Another double leg, this time to head to the outside.
Allen is able to pull him on over.
But look at this.
Williams has his hip so tight that he's able to drive back in.
He gets the two points.
So it's 13 to 2 for Williams the last seconds.
So the first period here is the till again.
You can only hold it for a one count.
That's not enough.
Here it end right.
The choice will go to Allen and he'll start in the down position.
Well, this has the Iowa State fans really want it up.
And you know it's been a it's been a while since there were that many folks in Hilton Coliseum and that excited about an Iowa match because this has come early in the match.
And that's very important.
Doug, tonight's match, 13 to 3 in favor of Rick Williams of Iowa State over Eric Allen of Iowa.
Coming up very early in the second period.
Williams looks awfully good.
Allen now is in for his first offensive try.
He has the single leg goes to the bars guard on the other side.
He gets a two.
He does have it because he managed to keep his freedom supporting parts it you know, it's tough when you're down 13 to 3 to either get together enough gumption right there to even convince yourself that you've got to take down in.
Yeah.
Allen comes back, executes a nice single, cuts off to a double, keeps his toes in That's a nice execution by Allen He's got a mountain to climb but you got to see has you got to take it But we're early in this match and it's 13 to 5 so what could have been a technical foul in a hurry could be turned around very quickly.
He's close to scoring here, but Allen does have Williams flattened out now with the leg in and he's in good business.
Williams is back up into the his base position.
He went back and he wants to put he wants to put Allen on his back from that spot and he's got his bling.
He has a half Nelson He's got it tough there with a minute to go in the second period reversal all ready.
Can he fit in?
It'll be a big one here a big yell If he does He did with right here.
All he does right here is just say I'm not letting Allen off.
He gets his chest.
The pressure.
He put so much pressure on him, he puts it back into the mat.
Pat McCormack slaps him at 4 minutes and 16 seconds and a pin by Rick Williams.
You'll remember that for a long time because it came against Iowa.
And Iowa leads Iowa State leads Iowa 6 to 3 after two matches.
And here we go again in 134 with Troy Steiner against this man, Derrick Monster ranked number 12.
Now he's a freshman from Newton.
After his redshirt year, he's come in the lineup and won 24 matches.
Troy Steiner won the national title last year at 142.
And then one of those strategic ideas, Troy Steiner, was dropped by his coach down to one £34, feeling the team would be stronger with him here.
He's a powerful two time Big Ten champion, a three time all-American, and the defending national champion at a higher weight.
And he has that strong front headlock.
Well, we we know how good Troy Steiner is.
And you got to love his work ethic and what he's done for Iowa in the last three years.
I'm going to tell you this freshman from Iowa State, Derrick Monsoor, he's a really neat kid to watch.
You can tell that he's you know, he's just out there because he loves wrestling.
He came down to 134 also from his weight that he thought he was going to be at 140 to go to the team.
This is where Steiner likes to be a monster.
Did not go all the way in on the shot, and Steiner tried for the fun, had luck.
Sometimes he's able to come around on that night goes to the two on one tie up out front.
What I like about Monster is he'll just never give up.
He's a great guy.
STEINER Strong movement to take down for Steiner Yeah, I know.
He's going to not that favor.
Watch it tonight.
Try.
Steiner This is where you don't want to be with Troy Steiner.
You're going to beat Troy Steiner.
You got to beat him on his feet.
You've got to be the one that gets to take down.
When you get on the mat, you're in big trouble because you're in Steiner Country.
Now, you notice that monster does doesn't have any position here.
STEINER Steiner has flattened him out, puts that leg in.
Let's go back and read the oh, here's the first takedown here.
He came in on the high crossed, and he cut a cross to a double leg here, covered two hips and got two.
And the referee is going to be talking to Douglas.
Bobby Douglas is out when he's getting in for the first one.
I got to tell you, they're talking about how Steiner was working on Monster's leg, and Douglas thought it was against the joint and shouldn't have been allowed.
Good green first move.
We're in the first period at 134.
Troy Steiner of Iowa leads.
Derrick Mom's here.
Two to nothing and he's in the position that he favors whenever he can get it.
Everybody likes to be on top, but.
STEINER Yeah, is pretty dominant up in that position.
I don't think there's a lot of people that like that top position as much as Troy and Terry Steiner.
Again, here's that attempt at a at a bet like Turk with that toe there.
Oh, he's punishing him and he's trying to try to bring Monster over on his back.
But I'll tell you, that's where I was talking about Monster.
Here.
He is tough and he is not going to let him turn him over.
That's not fun under there.
No, we have 30 seconds to go.
In the first period, Iowa State, some people wonder why you scream.
Why when you're 40 years old, like myself, I don't go in the backyard wrestle.
I'd rather go shoot baskets.
Well, you pick right there.
Russell will come on.
You don't you don't hook up with either one of these people.
Come out.
Come out with Tim Johnson.
I'm Doug Brown on college wrestling Iowa Iowa State coverage for yourself.
I hope you're enjoying this battle between these two outstanding teams and a long, long, big time rivalry put back in action again here at Iowa State.
Small Hilton Coliseum.
There's a tilt.
Oh, oh, he's got an armbar tilt right here.
He puts so much pressure on you that Armbar tilt is one of his bread and butter right there.
And that's a three point nearfall because Steiner was able to turn mom's hair to his back for a kind of Fox choice.
Boy, that takes a lot out of you when you're five.
Okay, here's a tilt.
He's loading up on his hip.
He's got the armbar right here.
And now he just looks for the count from the referee to get his near-fall and he got three points near-fall for holding him for 5 seconds.
And he has a minute and 51 seconds of riding time.
Remember that riding time in the collegiate game comes is a point for the man at the end of the match.
Anybody who has a minute mora in the advantage position that his opponent has and Steiner out and around immediately for an escape on his six point that turned right around and did what you say they need to do.
T.J. went for the offensive shot right away, but didn't get it that time.
That's the mark of a good wrestler.
When you when you escape and score, the best time to go back in is right now.
Derek Monster Rock, Newton, Iowa doing very well in his first year production.
A psychological shock but he's in there against that crack try Steiner, who was the national champion last year at a higher weight.
We saw Derek Monster beat Scott Hassell from northern Iowa in that meeting, televised here again, dominant.
The powerful headline here, this is the one where a round comes Steiner scores is second takes up eight to nothing.
Now you know we talk about a headlock, but really the headlock is just a way to get to where the pressure is, because the pressure is from STEINER shoulder on top of Monster Shoulder.
And it's gets to the point where Monster just says, take it because of the pressure on you.
It's just too much to take out.
We have less than a minute to go.
In the second period, Troy Steiner leads Derek Monster of Iowa State eight to nothing, and he's loading them up to tell him again he has his back exposed.
Now if he can hold on there for five and there's no reason to believe he can't, he'll get three more points.
See all your power and wrestling comes from your hips.
And when you take that power away, whoa 11.
And I think potentially dangerous.
That's Bobby Douglas who was out there and he only on that one.
STEINER You're 1 to 1 trying to load Monster up and Granby Roll Monster is out.
He'll come in, but there's Steiner in on a double head in the middle.
Now he's going to be able to elevate and come out the back door.
And he's good in this position.
Well, he's tough, too, because he might drive driving right to his back.
There it is.
And it's what's left here.
And he has to give it up.
And now he's in trouble of being fed.
And there's only 4 seconds.
It ends.
Lewis here escapes, but it's a three point NEARFALL After the takedown, you only need two more points.
And it's a technical fall.
That's two more points for Troy Steiner.
And it's a 15 point win which gives the team five points, 40 to 1.
They need two more points go round.
14 to 1 is the scarred Troy Steiner over Derek Monster here very close to a technical fall because the match will be stopped when it reaches a 15 point difference and that would be five points for the Iowa team, third period.
STEINER Oh, plowing through there.
There it is a technical fall in the third period, 5 minutes and 29 seconds and five points for Iowa's team.
They now take the lead again, 8 to 6 after £134.
Got it.
Well, there's one of the finest wrestlers in the nation right there, if not the finest.
Roy Steiner.
This, you know, he's got two.
Now we go to £142.
And I think this is going to be a big match because this is a fine freshman from Iowa who is on a roll.
Lincoln makeover.
Raby has come into the lineup and a veteran transfer from Oklahoma State in the Iowa State line up.
Senior Jody Wilson ranked number 17.
Actually, Mack already is ranked higher.
And we'll see if one of the good young men is better than the good veteran.
What is this?
It's a swing match.
One of the closest matches that Iowa State needs to have.
And they can't.
There's not a lot of margin for error.
Brighton State tonight and tonight to me, and this is a very, very important match.
Marco Raby in the black for Iowa is one of the most sought after high school seniors last year in the country.
In four years of high school, he won five state titles.
That's because he won one in eighth grade.
But Jody Wilson was a champion in Oklahoma, a great wrestling state.
He comes from a history of wrestling in the family that is practically unmatched.
Shelby Wilson, who was a great Olympic wrestler for Oklahoma State brother Eric Russell in the Cowpoke program.
And then this year he decided he wanted to get that last year of wrestling in Oklahoma State was penalized for the NCAA.
So he came in and there he is down on the legs of Mack.
But he doesn't get the takedown yet.
He has it.
He has it.
He gets the two because Michael Raby had to go to his hands to support himself.
Wilson scores first rally, but Mack already didn't take long to get out.
Did you know it's like a mack Arabia in the black for Iowa trailing 2 to 1 against Jody Wilson of Iowa State in the middle of the first period at £142.
We have a minute and 40 seconds to go again.
Wilson shoots under.
Mack already comes around corners and gets his first takedown as a nice job right there.
He stayed right in place and he lowered his level and got the points there.
Look at that.
He comes around and now he drops down with that level, comes around, covers the legs, has a 2.3 to McIlroy, who likes to go on his feet.
So he goes in the international start position and lets Jody Wilson out three, three.
We're even lucky he wants to settle it on the feet.
Wilson got the first takedown.
He may be happy to do it up there to very low single shot Wilson more a methodical wrestler.
He wants to have a game plan.
He gets in and he doesn't want to get out of that game plan.
McIlroy be more of a scrambler and he's he's willing to get in a flurry.
He's very talented than last.
Lots of weapons.
So he wants to go at it a lot.
I think Jody Wilson got a finger in the eye here by Bobby Douglas calling for some ice, but Wilson is already back at work again with a minute to go in the first period through three.
It's the significance between the two styles, one that is methodical, another that really likes the flurry is that the methodical wrestler may get a little more frustrated when things happen that don't go according to his plan.
Number three three, Jody Wilson on the right for Iowa State.
He's in on the leg right away.
But Mack already had a good counter pass it good at nine he kept up he got kids and it's Iowa score that was wonderful reaction by Lincoln McElroy that was his deepest single as he hit his run, Wilson came to the mat in a big tumble there.
And you're getting a time out here for injury.
Well, this is the end right there.
And he just comes on top of his a little bit.
But what happened earlier was Jody Wilson got in on a very deep single.
Here's here's the now see Lincoln McElroy.
His knee did come down before Jody Wilson came down.
And so it was legal, but as we were saying, Lincoln McElroy, we got those two points by having wonderful reaction to that deep shot, scooted his hips around and came around for the two points.
We have a little shot of what happened last night and will be able to use here shortly with Lincoln McElroy be up against his opponent from Ohio State.
He's leading Jody Wilson here with 29 seconds to go in the first period.
And Wilson was dazed by that little slam, but not enough to continue getting up quickly.
Five four in favor of McElroy.
But look at him.
But not not close enough.
This is going to be a real interesting match here.
And if they can both keep it up, it's going to be interesting all the way.
If one falters or gets lazy, watch out.
See the time ticking away in the first period.
Again, a low shot by Mack.
Already he's dogged on it.
He doesn't want to let go.
Period ends five four.
Michael Reagan as close to two points right there.
Here we go.
Last night, this is what happened when Lincoln McElroy went up against Charlie Beck's last night, Iowa against Ohio State.
There's that little inside trip action down to the leg and boom, McElroy went ahead there after trailing 6 to 1 early in the match, and he eventually won.
And Iowa beat Ohio State.
Here is a backup rabies choice.
In the second period, he picks the down position and Wilson writes, Wilson's a real competitor.
He's not going to let getting what he thought was slammed by without putting it right back to McElroy.
You read Jody Wilson of Iowa State down in the second period with a minute 32.
The goal trails Lincoln McElroy by 5 to 4, and Mack already now has his six points by escaping 6 to 4 two point lead for the Hawkeyes, two takedowns for McElroy by the freshman from Iowa and one takedown, the first one, as a matter of fact, the meet by Jody Wilson.
Chris could go double for the team score after three matches.
Iowa eight Iowa State six Front headlock missed there by Mack already.
But he keeps coming.
He keeps coming.
He has lots of weapons and he likes to use them one after the other.
It puts a lot of pressure on you and he does change levels well but he just loves to flurry not from a defensive style either.
He likes to get a flurry and go on offense and that's what he's done.
Farmer, farmer, farmer, farmer.
A minute.
Five to go in the second period.
WILSON Oh, that's out of bounds.
No Score six for the Man in Black.
There been a lot of close calls there for McClure, maybe as far as he's went on the legs.
Nope, that's out of out.
Wilson's really dodging a lot of bullets right now.
Isn't the most macro that he's really made for this Iowa Dan Gable style, isn't it?
Well, like I said, he likes to come at you.
He likes to put a lot of pressure on you.
And yeah, he's made really Iowa style Iowa eight in round two four and takedowns here at 8 to 5 in the team score That's again Mac already in there no score It's like these bullets are going things right past Wilson's head right here and it's only 6 to 4 and yet McCoy he's had about three times as many close to take down there He is out on the high crotch underneath and he's ahead 8 to 4.
An impressive performance early in the second period by Lincoln.
McElroy changes levels awfully well.
Yes does a lot of different kinds of things.
As you can see.
What if a group of guys go, hang on, hang on the guys?
That's the time left in the second period.
Iowa and Iowa State from Hilton Coliseum facing eyes, trying to bar the arm and roll, take Wilson to his back.
It's not easy thing to do.
There's Ken McElroy.
Maybe thinking Mac and rabies dad down here from South Dakota, he's he's proud, but he's probably more nervous right now than anything.
Official Start coming.
Guess what?
Jody Wilson has his choice.
He starts down, Mac O'Reilly lets him go right away.
The score is 8 to 5 for Wilson's escape now, three point lead for Mac.
Already he has no right.
Oh, that was almost close to a whip over right there by Mac already.
He's really putting a lot of pressure on Wilson.
And you know, Wilson's hanging in there.
You've got to give him credit.
These almost are because Wilson's able to put them in.
That was a low pick by Wilson.
But Mac already is countering it very, very well.
Does a great job of scooping his hips.
Look at that hip pressure right now.
Look at that hip pressure heat Wilson has no oh, he has it.
Just a powerful set of hips.
And he leads 10 to 5.
10 to 6.
After the escape.
Oh, well, pretty soon Wilson as as close as he's hung in there, he could get called for stolen less.
He does something like that.
And again, as Wilson reaches in but can't keep him and around he comes up the fourth takedown on a counter move look at now that wasn't a counter you on a high dumped him down He has Wilson's head wrap here.
If he gets him, he has a minute to do it through Wilson comes out 12 to 7.
I think he's right now wide and Gable made the move Troy Steiner to 134 Lincoln Mac already out of redshirt in February.
You hardly ever see that pulls him out a redshirt, puts him in a true freshman.
I think he can compete at this weight and I'll tell you, there was the counter and he has Wilson tired out looks of it again a counter 16 to 9 after the escape 1818 to 9 I should say, after the near fall.
18 nine right back 18 to 9.
And again, he got his team up with 16 seconds left.
One Right now he's just burying Jodie Wilson, 20 to 10.
Little Boot's good again.
Boy, he controls it hip so well, 22 to 10.
Well, second, I thought this was an important match because it was in a big blow at Iowa State against a better kickers.
And Mack already look the best he's up since we've seen him and Jodie Wilson goes down to defeat here 23 to 10.
It's a major decision more and more points for the Iowa Hawkeyes.
They now take the lead 12 to 5 after four matches.
There's Ken McCoy of his reaction.
I bet he's had a lot of experience doing that.
A five time state champion for a son.
Now his first year at college.
He's doing all right for a lot of people.
This is the feature match coming up.
The number one ranked Perry Steiner against this man, Corey Jackson ranked fourth, but he had Steiner have met.
Check has done it 12 times in the past.
This is the 13th meeting, the first this year.
Last year, they went three and three.
They're both All-Americans.
Steiner is undefeated in 1993.
You can see well, we've talked about how explosive Corey Jackson is.
And, you know, he can hit you any time.
And it can and he can score.
But the thing is, sometimes he doesn't attack.
And right there he's on the attack.
And that's what Gary Steiner needs to do, too.
He can't hang out good are very powerful reserve by Steiner gets that position pre the overlook both these wrestlers have attacking style and they need to wrestle their style.
You can't sit back in a match against either one of these in 12 matches Steiner has won seven.
Jackson has won five.
Most of them have been high scoring although the last one wasn't kind of like right there at the same weight.
Neither one of them has has won a national title yet.
So apparently there's a leg shot by a jacket by Steiner, which Jackson fights off.
So one of these people is doomed to disappointment this year.
Yeah, that's right.
There can only be one national champion and you can bet both of them have their eyes on it.
One or both, you have to say, actually, because Steiner was fifth last year, third the year before Jackson was sixth last year, Steiner is in, but Jackson's across the year across the back in this with the Whizzer and there he is not bad possession and it's out of bounds anyway.
Well, Jackson's as talented and gifted as they come and look and he's strong also.
So Torrie Jackson against Terry Steiner, Iowa State against Iowa with a minute and 30 seconds to go in the first period, no score at Hilton Coliseum on college wrestling.
Tim Johnson And I'm Doug Brown.
We have a good crowd on a snowy night, a stormy night in Ames, an undefeated wrestler for the Hawkeyes here against an old rival.
Torrie Jackson, ranked number four in the country.
Four guys, Action guys, action guys.
I know that you guys, but I am calling for action.
Is the official the referee Pat McCormick of Hampton, New Jersey.
When he's not wrestler refereeing wrestling matches, he's working for Nassau.
Well, see, one thing about Corey Jackson is he can explode for two at any time, but he can also get called for stalling at any time.
It's just one of those things that and he just was and he just was wrong.
Next time at some point just what I it you know, but the next thing you know, Corey Jackson can go in and boom hit a hit a takedown.
How far they're on their feet with about 35 seconds to go.
That's the way the takedowns go.
You saw a bunch of like a naked Rabbitohs run that score up to 16, run the total up £150.
Iowa and Iowa State, the top Steiner undefeated this year for PAC.
What it's hard to go through a season meeting.
Jackson Oh, there's a nice shot right There is a very good single.
He needs to complete this.
This is a real important attack for Torrey Jackson.
He doesn't have much time, though.
It's about to end the first period here.
See, what Steiner does so well is stuff that had reached no score in the first period, just a couple of seconds to go.
And the first period ends scoreless between Steiner and Jackson.
This is what's happened so far.
Zap, it'll be taken.
He looked good in that one.
Williams pinned Allen for Iowa State up then Troy Steiner dominated by Derek Mobbs here at Lincoln McElroy he dominated Jody Wilson, two big wins in a row for Iowa, and they lead now 12 six.
The choice went to Steiner.
Terry Steiner started the second period under of Iowa.
Torrie Jackson, Iowa State on top.
No score but an eight out Steiner's out.
First one count and Steiner has a leg.
Can he make can he make hay with it?
Well, what's he doing?
Is the only problem he's got.
Is he supposed to the edge?
And he just stepped out, won nothing.
Carey Steiner on the Steiner twins from Century High School in Bismarck, North Dakota.
Corey Jackson from Easton High School, Lansing, Michigan, come across good high crotch by Steiner the way you throw it on the boards.
But Jackson did a nice job of helping out.
But now Steiner is covering his hip.
He's continuing to stay close to the body, put it back up to the first takedown.
Here it goes to Steiner.
That was a good action reaction there.
Jackson giving good reaction.
But Corey Steiner coming back, staying close to the hip, keeping a lot of pressure on and coming around for the two points.
And now for the first time, Steiner is in a position where he's been dominant this year on top, puts the leg in.
We're going to start at three keeps Jackson flat.
What about whatever I was saying about Troy Steiner earlier as far as liking it on top and on the mat, you can just say ditto for Terry Steiner.
They pretty natural here.
And I've said a lot of times they use their legs like arms.
So they were he's got a lot of tools there.
He's trying to turn Jackson.
Then 25 seconds to go.
You break people down off their foundation and then you try to turn them over when they don't have their legs under him to help.
And Jackson has been flat here ever since.
Steiner took him down a few about a minute ago.
We don't have to hear him roll, guys.
Iowa 12, Iowa State six.
We're at 150.
Let's see if we can get that takedown.
We just had Harrison on the single leg right there.
Now watch.
He keeps cover and keeps the pressure on him.
Also, you're going to see the arm come through, Double leg cut across two points.
Now it's Jackson Choice.
He'll start underneath.
This is great.
No, he doesn't want to go under there any more.
He's going to start on the feet and he needs to finish it.
Steiner fought it off.
He can get in there, but he's having trouble following up there.
He comes around in the single leg.
But again, Steiner countered with McCoy.
He did a nice job at that same move in the last man shooting, he hit Steiner doing very well.
As long as Jackson keeps the leg, he's probably okay.
Oh, there was a takedown called five Nothing.
It was a takedown or a reversal for Steiner.
5 to 1 on the escape.
Jackson did a great job of getting back in Jackson right back.
And just what I'm talking about.
Relaxin right there.
Terry Steiner, relax.
Just for a split second, Jackson was back in.
Douglas didn't like the call he got earlier, but he's right here.
Look at Jackson back in on a double leg.
And he turns the corner really well, picks his face away.
Look how he squashes that knee there.
And he gets his two.
Bobby Douglas is out.
He wants to talk to Pat McCormick.
And let's listen to an escape.
And I'll tell you before the toe.
I thought he had his hips to the side.
Okay.
It was a tough call.
It was very close.
Okay.
He's got his first warning.
First warning.
And that's a warning because it was not talking about interpretations.
It was questioning judgment.
And so that's a warning against the Iowa State bench.
Boy, and there's Jackson.
That was a nice job by Jackson.
Torrie Jackson of Iowa State against Terry Steiner of Iowa.
Steiner leads 5 to 3 with a minute and 10 seconds to go in the match.
Now it's 6 to 3.
After the escape right now, here's where both wrestlers, again have to be on the attack.
They can't be hanging back.
Whoever attacks is going to win six three.
STEINER 13 times they've wrestled.
That's just amazing when you can sit on one leg, peg and a double way no score yet.
STEINER Keeping his balance and he's in there.
There.
Take that 6 to 9.
Well, really, Jackson needs to let him go on.
He's going to get a break here on that stalemate.
You look at the coaches, they're right there, right in time, by the way, 50 seconds for Steiner.
So I'm sure that Jackson is going to let Steiner go and try to take him down to tie it, maybe go into overtime.
Here's the International star.
It's six, seven, five.
And Jackson is going to try to tie it with 18 seconds to go.
And all he needs is 2 seconds to score.
That's how quick and fast he is.
There have been no warnings against Steiner, so Steiner can't afford one.
He got it.
One just there.
One one way Jackson is going to have to make a shot.
He did not make it.
He did not make it.
About that.
And Terry Steiner stays undefeated by Terry Steiner, which is 25th in a row over a really tough rival to Jackson of Iowa State, 7 to 5, Jackson had a great final period on the right there, the dark Harrison really pumping the fist.
That's that's little Steiner from Bismarck, North Dakota has had a big weekend watching her twin sons, Troy and Terry, even though he had a foot wrestle for the University of Iowa.
And that's the end of £150 match.
Tim.
And I'll be back in just a moment with more college wrestling coverage on your statewide home for sports, Iowa Public Television, a resource for Iowa's future.
First, let's take a look back at this.
Our 17th year of college wrestling with a video review, 1993 proved to be an outstanding season on college wrestling.
We kicked it off in January when North Carolina met Iowa, The defending national champion Hawkeyes got five pins and run to a 45 to 6 pasting of the dismayed Tar Heels.
Then the Nebraska Cornhuskers squared off with the Northern Iowa Panthers.
The Huskers Corey Olson ranked first at £177, scored a technical foul.
Northern Iowa's Brian Bennett to lead Nebraska to a 28 to 7 victory.
Next, we traveled to Lincoln, Nebraska, to bring you live coverage of the national team championships, where after a shocking upset of the Iowa Hawkeyes by Nebraska in the semifinals, Penn State emerged as the number one team by defeating the Cornhuskers 2213 in the championship final.
The following Sunday, we got our first look at New Iowa State coach Bobby Douglas as the Cyclones played host to Wisconsin.
Iowa State won the first five matches and freshman standout Derek Bouncier scored a ball at 134, propelling the Cyclones to a 2913 win.
February began with an intense intrastate rivalry.
Northern Iowa squared off with Iowa State.
The cyclones got to overtime wins and second ranked Matt Johnson's got up all en route to a 25 to 12 victory.
Then it was back to Iowa City, where the third ranked hawks played host to fourth ranked Arizona State.
Iowa moved the defending national champion at 140 to Troy Steiner down to £134, where he defeated Arizona State's Marco Sanchez.
The vacancy at 142 then was filled by freshman sensation Lincoln Mack arriving.
We got the decision over the Sun Devils, Steve Saint John.
The final in that one was Iowa 30, Arizona State 11.
And then last night, Ohio State tangled with Iowa.
The Hawkeyes top ranked Chad official extended his winning streak to 15, while the decision to move Troy Steiner down to 134 again move wide as he and Lincoln mako ratings scored back to back wins.
So our final score last night was Iowa, 24, Ohio State 13.
As for today's match featuring Iowa and Iowa State, it's still up for grabs.
And we'll be back with the second half of college wrestling's greatest rivalry in just a moment.
Here we are again at Hilton Coliseum, where it's Iowa 15, Iowa State six.
All Iowa State scorers came on a fall by Rick Williams at 126.
Other than that, it was Iowa and they won the two big matches at 118 and 150 in close ones, but they won them.
The Hawkeyes won both.
A mac or Ivy look terrific at 142 against, a veteran, Jody Wilson.
And still we have some ranked wrestlers.
Iowa State has three ranked wrestlers, including number one ranked Matt Johnson at 177.
This is our college wrestling series.
And we're going to have a little more than that.
We're going to have the high school meet coming up next week.
That's going to be a big one.
The three ring circus, three ring circus we always talk about at Veterans Auditorium in Des Moines, the high school championships in the state of Iowa live at 630 all over the state, wrestling off this weekend to see who's going to actually be there.
But we'll carry it for you, as usual, on Iowa public television.
We have two people on for maybe maybe if they make it to the weekend, as I think they will, they'll be gone for four time championships.
And we also have an address, if you'd like to write, to make comments about college wrestling this year from wherever you are here it is, College wrestling, Post office box 64, 50, 64, 50 Johnston, Iowa.
Johnston, Iowa.
The Zip 5013150131.
And that is the kind of thing we like to give you because we know that occasionally you like to correct us on something or tell us something interesting about the sport that we don't know.
And there's an awful lot we don't know.
We'll give you that address later, too.
Well, this rivalry of Iowa and Iowa State, it's it started out that way, I thought tonight with Iowa winning big in the first one, and then it turned around when Rick Williams came in.
Well, they needed more Iowa State needed more of Rick Williams kind of energy there.
He got six points and 42 and 50.
They were very close matches for a while.
But McElroy was like you said, look real good.
And then Steiner held on for the win.
But the rivalry itself, it's a fierce rivalry.
But Iowa has dominated for the past several years.
You see the people here at Hilton Coliseum, the mat where NCAA championships will be wrestled in March this year.
Now, that's what's happened since 1969.
Look at Iowa's firsts.
But Iowa State has been right up in there.
They've actually placed more since 1969 than Iowa has.
And that's those early seventies with Harold Nichols.
Before Coach Gable got to Iowa.
Always first, second, third or fourth to dominant teams in those last 24 years of championships since 1969.
We're moments away here at Hilton Coliseum from the £158 matchup.
We want to show you what happened, all these statistics, the kinds of things that happened in the first half, total points scored by individual wrestlers added up.
Well, just as you'd expect, Iowa leads 16 takedowns to six Near Falls.
But a lot of them here, 5 to 3.
Iowa has more than Iowa State.
But Iowa State did score the one for Rick Williams stock.
Eric Allen in the £126 match, Iowa was given one penalty point for an Iowa state stall and got to writing time points.
In addition to what I showed you there.
158 That's Earl Harrison is from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Washington High School.
He is a civil engineering student and is academic career at Iowa State.
He lettered three times in high school for a very fine Cedar Rapids, Washington team, and he's been the regular 158 part this year for the Cyclones.
His opponent is another Iowa high school product who is just beginning to come into his own Navy.
This is Darrell Weber, a freshman from Don Bosco Gilbert Field, who gave Mike Schick of Ohio State all he could ask for last night and then lost it in overtime.
And Earl Harrison was in on the way to start.
And he got the first takedown for Iowa State.
He saw Earl Harrison earlier in the year come up with a big win against Jamey Burn, Earl Harrison out of Cedar Rapids, Wash. As was Jamie Burn.
He beat his old teammate.
That was a big win.
Burn ranked fourth in the nation at the time.
Now Earl Harrison comes out.
He's probably hurt in the last couple of weeks on how Weber come on and how good he looks.
Maybe he's the kind of really rises to the occasion here at Hilton.
The Weber one guy is out immediately.
He sat out right away, worked from that position, gets his first point there on the edge 2 to 1 now in favor of Harrison Weber out of Gilbert ville.
Don Bosco.
He was an All-America state champion twice in high school, one of the better recruits in the last couple of classes.
Harrison on that leg again, and he's going to try to bring Weber back in and get the takedown up.
We'll see how they fight each other off here, the trip, and I'll take another one for Harrison.
Hey guys, this is a very important match for Iowa State.
They need to get back in it and they need to get in it Now.
Here is the leg again.
Trips backwards and covers both legs.
Look at how his arm came around.
They're covered up for a double leg and kept his feet in bounds for two.
So Harrison takes the 4 to 1 lead here again, Bosco Don Bosco graduate Daryl Weber goes to that set position, takes the head down, goes to the stand up, but he doesn't have hands.
Harrison is in good shape.
They're up.
They go with Harrison riding for let's see what he has 25 seconds of riding time.
I'll tell you, this is a big confidence booster for Earl Harrison.
And going into the big eights, they need this kind of performance at 158 Iowa State does because they want Earl Harrison to get in there to have a tough big eight to get in there and qualify.
Because if he can wrestle this way in front of the home crowd tonight, he can wrestle this way at the NCAA.
Webber again comes out the way he likes to do move, starting with a sit out position.
Webber's got a good offense, he's strong and he get it.
He can get in there and go himself and he can throw you.
We saw him against Ohio State, almost beat all-American Mike Schick, and he had them just all but taken down in an overtime and a great Granby counter from the feet to a double leg try by by two A to an attack leg.
Shot by Fox, by Schick by Weber.
Saved it for him.
Well, right there you saw Weber needed to do what he just did go on the attack because Earl Harrison has made all the moves really opening up dropping in on the singles right there.
Weber was able to make the attack, getting on the legs, but Harrison went off the mat before he could score the two.
We have a minute left.
In the first period, Earl Harrison of Iowa State leads Darrell Weber of Iowa 4 to 2.
And Iowa State needs some points because the Hawks got 15 to 6 advantage in the first five waits, the only cyclones scores six points came on a fall.
Look at double leg he's in behind Oh, he was behind the thighs right there.
And Weber did a nice job of sprawled and getting the hips out and avoiding the takedown.
Weber seems to have stabilized himself a little bit on the feet, but he is not yet scoring here.
Right now, Earl Harrison's doing a good job of staying inside.
Weber really is the one that needs the takedown right now to stay in this match because Harrison kind of has control of things, But Harrison is going to have to stay active, there's no question about it.
20 seconds to go.
In the first period, there's a single leg.
Try by Weber KANTE score before we get to the end of the period.
Little Yes, he can hit back.
That'll kill you.
Letting up a takedown with 10 seconds left.
That'll hurt you bad.
Right now he needs to score.
Earl Harrison needs to come out and score at least one just to get the momentum back his way before the period runs out.
9 seconds, Harrison will have to make a fast food goes to the ground.
It's too late for four at the end of the period, and it will be Webber's choice.
That's what happened to recruiting about last year's seniors.
According to those who figured it out.
Amateur wrestling news The Hawkeyes had the best spread.
Well, we saw like a McIlroy.
Maybe he could do it by himself, Maybe just get them up in first place.
Iowa State was figured to be 14th, but everybody who gets a say blue chip recruiter is recruiting results.
They still have to make them work out.
That's right.
And then Iowa's got Mike McKenna, a real blue chip or four time state champion from Illinois in the practice room redshirting this year.
And they've got a great, great group of freshmen.
And while we say that Daryl Weber of Iowa just took the lead over Earl Harrison by escaping.
Right.
Just a second here period started, it's now 5 to 4 in favor of Weber, Iowa over Harrison.
Harrison had two quick takedowns, but he has now fallen behind and got Weber will just keep coming at you.
One thing I think Weber is getting in pretty good condition now.
He hasn't been in the lineup until the last few weeks.
He's just fresh into the lineup taking over for Rich Catalina.
You go to pretty good shape though, a minute ten to go see.
Now, Weber would seem to have almost taken the mental upper hand here in a way, so he's putting pressure on the head and looking for the snap down, looking for openings so he can lower his level and getting a leg shot.
Look at that.
Looking to snap around or whip over a little low level lateral drop.
He can do it a lot of things, but he definitely is controlling the head here.
And Harrison got those first two quick takedowns.
He's going to have to find the way to another one.
But here's Weber and on the leg trip, see what's changed here.
Yes, the take down seven two for Weber early in the match go down.
Earl Harrison was controlling the tie getting in tight dropping in a single right here Darrell rubber gets in on the single leg after controlling the inside game now it comes back to his base cuts across his arm and gets the two points referee's position here with about 35 seconds to go and Weber on top leads 7 to 4.
He's taken control here in the second period.
Hello, guys.
Come on, guys.
Hey, good morning.
Against the top man.
Darrell Weber.
Got to do.
You got to move off the legs.
Now, you heard the reason he said you want him to move off the legs.
He just got to.
That's Bobby Douglas.
His man started out ahead for one.
Now he's behind 7 to 4 last six points scored by Weber.
Swish, where you can see the time count down right now.
It'd be great if Earl Harrison for Iowa State could get out, but it's not going to happen.
Well, Weber is controlling and now we've come to the end of the second period 7 to 4.
Iowa's Weber his team leads 15 to 6, he leads 7 to 4.
Harrison had his choice.
He'll start bottom because if he gets out, he gets a point quickly.
But he wasn't able to get out here at the end of the period.
Now Weber is going to actually let him go.
He says, I'll get you on your feet.
Seven, five.
Now let's find Darrell Weber of Iowa in the Black Leads, Earl Harrison of Iowa State.
As we start the third period, 7 to 5 Iowa has the lead over Iowa State, 15 to 6, £158 class.
There's the first really good shot that Harrison is taking.
He's going to try to bring Weber back in.
So what he needs, he needs to get this takedown.
And if he doesn't get any need to attempt 3 to 4 shots in a row, that's the only way that he's going to beat is if he stays on the attack right now.
He needs to finish this up now to the stalemate, says Pat McCormick.
I can't wait for you guys, he said.
Iowa has been warned for stalling right now.
And there's Dan Gable saying get going.
And so the next time it looks like Darrell Weber is backing off, he'll get hit for stalling.
But Aaron Harrison has to take advantage of it.
He needs to be taken, shot after shot after shot, 7 to 5 in favor of Weber and he's on the attack now.
Harrison, again is another leg.
He just didn't had a good counter this time.
That had a lot to do with Earl Harrison not having the power in time.
That performance that he had it before he went out of bounds.
It's a takedown and that's a four point lead for Weber.
That was really interesting right there.
Earl Harrison was in tight just didn't have the power to keep it.
So now he's down by four three after the escape here on the feed, Harrison in good and he's only back by one That time he got in deep and he was able to cover the hips and finish 10 to 8 after the escape.
That's what he needs to do right now.
HARRISON And that's what Weber needs to do for Iowa.
And there is no riding time advantage here where in the last 35 seconds takedown would send it into overtime.
There goes Harrison scores 1010.
Now he doesn't want to let Weber go because he doesn't want to let him go.
He wanted him to let him go about 10 seconds ago.
But now it's too late because he gets out and that makes it 11 to 10 in favor of Weber.
And now the takedown is absolutely essential.
Or Harrison loses.
He's got to go on the attack.
Right now.
He's got time for two shots in on the lay.
Can he get it?
Couldn't get it.
He missed it by a second.
He missed it by a second.
Break.
Tough on that one.
On a last minute escape by Darrell Weber, a talented freshman already in the Iowa lineup with a ten.
And it puts the Hawkeyes up 18 to 6.
Here's the escape right here.
A little Granby roll out.
Weber almost turns it into a coming back for a reversal.
I didn't get the escape yet until right now.
Now there's the one point.
But Bobby Douglas would have his brothers.
Harrison would have let him go immediately with 33 seconds left.
Got back in for the takedown because Harrison was on the roll.
Oh, we go to 167 and Iowa is going to send out Matt Narrow for Iowa from West Union, Iowa, North Fayette High School sophomore Matt Narrow.
It was Russell two days in a row at 167 for the first time this year, his opponent from Britt Steve Kelly.
Steve Kelly as well.
I'd say Weber has done a lot to nail down that one £58 class for the Big Ten for Iowa now near him trying to do the same thing at 167 four, Iowa is trying to nail down a spot for him.
It's a little different than it was, let's say a month and a half ago.
A little different was last week.
Yes, You're absolutely right.
Last night was the first time down from 177 for near him against Ohio State and filling in for Keith Trammel.
And where that leaves Keith Trammell, I don't know.
He trammell's done a nice job for Iowa and he'll be trying to find a spot somewhere.
Remember that the Cyclones still have three top ranked wrestlers up in the top near cotton on a low single right there and he's able to be dropped in that angle, was able to power his way through and get the two points and now he's trying to work that near wrist right there in an armbar right there.
So he's bringing that wrist up over the back.
He's going to try to get some action so he can see if he can get Kelly to his back.
Steve Kelly from a wrestling family in the small town of Britt, Iowa.
It's good to have lots of state champions in that family.
Although Steve never did win one, he was he finished third once in his high school career.
He was second the National Junior College Championships last year.
Here's Nam's takedown.
He just posted the elbow drop in on the low single.
Yet now he drives through the hips.
There's nothing Kelly could do except go to his belly, to nothing in favor of the Hawkeyes here.
Matt NEREM, here he comes on.
That last takedown is a good example for high school wrestlers.
You know, you want to get into where you can put their opponent in a position that he can't do anything.
You take away possession and then you execute cross Cross-Body Ride by Matt NEREM, and he's kind of bar the arm.
He's has Kelly right where he wants him here flat out now.
He wants to keep him down and then him now.
But now here's Kelly getting to his knees again.
So we'll have to break him down once more like that.
Turk Try to pull him over somehow.
You've got to go for the mat there.
I'm of Iowa in the black lead.
Steve Kelly of Iowa State, two to nothing with 45 seconds to go.
In the first period, Iowa has 18, Iowa State six.
We're at £167.
Now.
I'm got a takedown on a single leg quite early.
And he has ridden Kelly for a minute and a half near Hobbs, one of these young men that never won a state championship.
And here he is in an Iowa uniform and trying to become an all-American.
And he's worked hard.
He knew he could wrestle for Iowa and his dreams coming true.
Well, actually, 167 should be more his weight.
He never did weigh as much as 177, even when he was wrestling there.
He's got a far wrist and an arm bar.
Now he just has the arm bar and he's trying to turn Kelly.
Kelly flattens out again.
I was thinking first period on top.
There was way he got 2 minutes of right in time.
That's Jim Zaleski on the left hand Green Dan Gable's assistant who was a three time national champion when he was wrestling on the Hawkeye program, Matt NEREM takes down for the second period.
He starts underneath.
That means Kelly I'll get his choice in the third.
Right now, what is near do trying to kick out Kelly staying on him right there.
Go back.
Kelly needs to stay a little tighter.
He needs to switch off put a lot more pressure on NEREM right now if he hopes to keep him down.
I don't think he's going to break down on top.
You really need to come on strong right here and you need to know how to put that pressure on in different spots so that NEREM can't come straight up there.
He knows he got the pressure, but now he needs to switch off to the other side, not able to do it.
Arum is out.
It's three nothing escape worth one point takedown and reversals to near Falls two or three points.
If you can hold it for 5 seconds.
That position nice low single there by narrow.
He just grabbed that ankle out of nowhere but I think the out of bounds situation prevented.
Oh no no no with a takedown for narrow left right let that in on that low John Smith ankle right there and now he's looking for that out of the leg looking for it First time Kelly gets it away near imposing back on drops for the two John Smith single because that's what the many time world champion an Olympic champion from formerly of Oklahoma State now coaching at Arizona State at Oklahoma State uses all the time he's revolutionized wrestling by that low attack.
You can't get any lower than he does.
And John Smith, of course, a six time world champion, he's got to get inside feet unless you came at him from under the mat somehow.
Yeah.
You've got to dig up some math to get lower five zip, narrow lead.
So like any sport, you give the type of moves to the person that does it the best in the United States or in the world.
Kind of a tribute to the inventor.
A lot of pressure by narrow he had to do got Kelly flattened out and then it was easy to come around it did a nice job of snapping the head and putting the pressure on the shoulder and then floating around getting behind.
It does a nice job of getting behind his opponents once they're out of position.
Oh 7 to 1 after the takedown and after the next takedown.
30 seconds, guys, 39 to 2 in favor of Matt Narrow, the referee last night against Ohio State.
Now, tonight, I think this is obviously the best I've seen Iowa look all year and they're starting to come on to way that I think Dan Gable thought they did the first of the year.
If they gel, they're dominating here at £167 over.
Steve Kelly shares time at this way at the end of the second period, 9 to 2 at Hilton Coliseum, 6328 on a snowy night came to watch these two legendary wrestling schools get set at Iowa State.
This is the scene this is where you'll see the Hilton capsule start coming jump in March when the NCAA championships are wrestled here.
We talked a lot.
We talked about Iowa's dominance of late in this series.
They've won 19 out of the last 24 dual meets with Iowa State, 9 to 3.
After the escape there, Kelly was allowed up here and gets behind him.
But there's the wizard.
He's going to be able to drop down and trip and get the two points.
So it's 11 to 3 nice variety of changing levels, nice variety of moves for near him, gets in on the shot.
And what he does is he's able to finish it quite proficiently.
I think they're almost favored in this match.
But there were several others where Iowa State had some close chances and they were hoping to get away, maybe with some something close.
They did win with Rick Williams at 126 on a fall 6 to 3.
But Zapp, it'll be taken.
Troy Steiner ran up the score.
ANNOUNCER And Lincoln McElroy Maybe Arabian one that we thought maybe might be close.
Boy It was.
It wasn't for a while.
23 to 10.
Mack already beat Wilson and then Terry Steiner.
Torrie Jackson 7 to 5, and Darrell Weber beat Earl Harrison 11 to 10.
So I was one.
The coach was up.
So start coming.
It's at 167, that narrow arm of Iowa leads Steve Kelly of Iowa State 11 to 3 with a minute and 5 seconds to go in the match and look at this is what Neram is doing Well, right here, as has some other Iowa wrestlers of late.
Speaking of Mac worthy, keeping the pressure on, lowering the level hip and out when these being attacked, they're doing all the right things and they're staying on top of it.
You saw the number of takedowns there, 24 to 10 right now.
Iowa leading control, get control, control the time by quite a score there, too.
And you can hear Bobby Douglas continuing to encourage Steve Kelly there teaching along the way, saying this may not be my night, but there's going to be a night and I've got to teach my kids to the mental and physical preparation to beat these guys down the road.
Again, a low leg attack by their producers, 2.13 to 4.
He now has a major decision.
Come on, he's improving.
Sitting out there in front of him.
A lot of riding time, too.
He'll get that point at the end of the match for advantage time.
All tied up guy.
You got him all tied up.
You got him all tied up.
1013 for good one.
Come on up.
No change Red down there stays in charge.
There.
I think the match coming up is really going to be interesting.
That will be Matt Johnson, number one, ranked for Iowa State against a tough sophomore, rangy, tall Greg Stilt near tall.
Wait till they see him.
They haven't seen a tall wrestler until Tim Felton and our big win Matt narrow he had riding five he won 14 to 4 at Iowa goes up on Iowa State 22 to 6 after seven matches the Hawkeyes juggernaut goes on but there is still sophomore from Grundy, Virginia.
He's unranked Don't let it bother you He's good.
There is Matt Johnson.
He is ranked number one and he's good and he deserves it.
He has good skills.
He's had a great rivalry with Corey Olson and the last one he won at the National championships.
He's a two time all-American, has yet to win a title, and he is looking for it this year.
And his last chance in on the single-A against a tall, tall, six foot, four inch stoner makes it tough for a wrestler.
Well, we saw that last night against Ohio State to good to take down for Johnson an impressive Greg Skilton who took the defending national champion Kevin Randleman into Overton overtime here this high leg single inside trip to finish it off nice job by Mat Johnson.
Mat Johnson was coached by his dad in high school and bright and bright in Colorado and Greg Stilton, who was coached by a former Iowa NCAA champion Kevin Dresser in Grundy, Virginia, where he won his last 78 matches and may talk about what an advantage it is to be tall in wrestling.
I think maybe sometimes you wouldn't imagine that.
Well, the leverage, for one thing, you've got a lot of leverage.
And especially if you get proficient that on the in the on the mat style, you can take away position from your wrestler from your opponent so much that it just it just frustrates a lot of wrestlers to wrestle those tall drinks of water.
Johnson brings the leg and he wants to try control Stoner there and then Johns is doing a nice job with it all.
He's trying to he's trying to put Stoner on his back.
Well, he's doing a nice job of hanging in there because look at he's got the old grapevine right in here.
Look at this.
Oh, my son.
That's a nearfall.
Now, Johnson lost to Coleman trying to pin it, and he did.
Coming back on there.
That was a big, big pin for Mat Johnson.
I tell you, that's that's impressive.
That's how you get ranked number one.
Oh, great fight right here.
Gets that arm over the shoulder right here.
And now he comes and he's been waiting for the near fall, 5.5 card.
And then he made a shot for the fit for the pin here.
Didn't it go in a bar?
But here's the reaction right there.
Yeah.
He says, That's how I like to do it.
He's a real athlete that Johnson.
He's a fine wrestler.
Ranked number one now, here are two ranked men at 190.
Joe Sharrett number three for Iowa and Dan Troop number six for Iowa State.
And this ought to be very interesting.
2212 Iowa leads Iowa State sheriff from Kennedy High School in Bloomington, Minnesota.
But Dan Troop of Kalispell, Montana gets first shot at a takedown and has the high leg up there.
Well, it's a motion is going to be good for Dan because what he needs to do is he needs to open up.
He's very, very talented, out of bounds.
But he does stand around sometimes and doesn't execute and uses gifts.
He's talented.
He can drop in on the singles just like you saw and finish off.
They went out of bounds, keeping him from getting the two points.
Joel Sheridan the same way.
Very talented.
He can keep coming at wrestling.
People have known all about both of these young men since, well, back in their high school days.
They were well known on the Freestyle junior freestyle circuit.
And as a matter of fact, Rico to Dan Troup was a double winner in the junior Nationals.
His just after his senior year from Flathead High School in Kalispell, Montana.
He's a junior, Schatz a sophomore.
And this is one of those rivalries could be done over the next couple of years.
You bet.
They won't move out of 190.
They're right at this weight and they're going to butt heads.
They're now in the NCAA.
And next matches.
We've seen Joel Sherritt take that position up front there and push his opponent up against Edge of the Mat and work from there.
But Troup is physically quite strong and so he's given a share and a tussle and it's Dan Troup of Iowa State in the red against Joel Sherritt of Iowa in the black with a minute and a half to go in the first period of £190.
Both these wrestlers have a lot potential potential to beat a couple of the finest hundred and 90 pounders either school has ever had.
They're kind of like bulls in a China closet, though, right now.
And they need to know when to use that finesse and when to ease off and when to use their their skills.
Last time Iowa had two wrestlers pinned in a meet.
When was that, Doug Rey Wrestlers.
Last time they had two or more.
Yeah.
That was Nebraska at the National Duals when that happened three times.
There's Eddie Bannock right there, former three time NCAA champion for Iowa, an assistant at Iowa State, now an academic counselor at Iowa State.
So that's a rarity.
We remember when we talked and saw the Nebraska meet, we said, when's the last time Iowa has been pinned?
Three times in a week?
We couldn't remember.
Now, twice in one year, we've seen a couple of pins against Iowa, but that's all that Iowa State's been able to do.
Those two fans great Iowa week and they need and to get in this match to get back, they need to pull another one out a couple more.
They need at least a major decision and a and a pin to tie this meet.
Two old rivals will get together and heavyweight again, two numbers, three and four in the country, Austin Dauphin.
Kenny, what do they say about this Iowa State Iowa rivalry?
Anything we laugh at, anything can happen this year as it has throughout the book.
Well, sometimes you do.
I guess you go over the last 15 years, the book prevailed most of the time.
But this is Bobby Douglas, first shot at Iowa since coming into the program as the head coach for the Cyclones.
There's a Sheraton on the lake, but right on the edge house and they're out 29 seconds to go first period.
Got two tough guys here to £190 sea truth.
Both of these wrestlers need more of a change of pace.
They both just keep coming at you and they need to understand how to drop their level, share their load, share it underneath us.
We you to do well.
You right?
That's that's right.
I'm looking.
I'm looking at you.
You're genius.
Yeah, right.
Dropped the level nice into the double leg and drove through.
And that's what Gable would like to see more of.
Joel Scherer do it.
Very talented.
And the same goes for Dan through 15 seconds to go.
When he got that in the first period.
That's big to get at this late in the period.
Now Oh yeah that match and Sharon has the legs and he looks like he's in pretty good shape.
The goal will be in the period two to nothing.
Sheryl Lee Troup gets his choice read down and he will take the downside here.
Maybe this time he is gets that red hoping not to let shirt get the legs in quite so quick quickly good record is ranked sixth.
All right.
All right.
Go ahead.
Another good record.
He's ranked third.
This is where Troup would rather be on the feet.
Good.
But he doesn't have anything up there.
Sheriff's does controlling him.
Out of out.
Guy two Zip gets it.
Sheriff Ed the center with Tim Johnson.
I'm Doug Brown at Hilton Coliseum in Ames, the scene where the 1993 national championships and tonight the scene of the Iowa Iowa State annual duel.
Iowa 22, Iowa State 12.
Joel Sherrill has Dan Troop to do nothing now put him on after he could finally escape.
As so often happens.
And here we have a nice crowd of 6000 that would be screaming a little louder if at 118 one 5158 a few extra points going Iowa State's way and we'd have a whole different meet, but it didn't happen again.
The close ones have in general gone.
They have gone to Iowa and that was the key to the meet that Iowa State needed to win the close matches out of bounds with, what, a minute, nine to go in the second period.
Dan Gable is up there.
He has his two assistants with him, Jim Zaleski and Tom Brown's at four Iowa State.
Bobby Douglas says his two assistants, Tom Ortiz and Adam Darren Gorski are less than a minute to go in the second period.
Joel sheriff of Iowa in the black leads Dan Troop of Iowa State 2 to 1 Oh go again troop needs to be able to do more than just go forward at that same position.
He needs to be able to do it.
You also share it did drop your level an attack on a double leg pushing shoving nice pushing the shot.
Got to know when to retreat, set up, drop back in.
You can't just go forward all the time and expect to score a trip by Sharon.
He has another takedown.
You got a great, nice execution by Joel.
Share it right there.
And he's up for two one.
He has the only takedown.
Kind of tough to get into a shoving match with him.
Go ahead, break.
But he has managed to change levels twice and he got two takedowns, 4 to 1.
Let go.
That's how much time is left in the second period at £190, 4 to 1 in favor of share.
You can see that Iowa's got streaks going.
You can see in 1978 through 1981, they won five in a row from 81 to 86, they won ten in a row and then Iowa State won a couple.
And then between now 87 and, now they've won 13 in a row.
You read that the way it is is the total number of wins.
They've had 35 for Iowa now, 14 for Iowa State, with two ties go Joel Sherritt of Iowa leads 5 to 1 over Dan Troop of Iowa State with a minute and 40 to go in the match.
Sherritt just got his fifth point on an escape.
He has the only two takedowns.
Troup has not been able to reach it, but Troop hasn't been able to change his level of attack.
His legs.
And that was just one.
And what that really limits you when one you don't think you can do it to your opponent doesn't, think you can do it, and it's hard to tell which is more important.
Maybe the former, especially when your opponent has a confidence that he knows he can drop in which chair has shown that he can turn it there.
There he is again.
James levels just a minute.
Eight to go get knocked off.
Bobby Douglas jumps up and exhorts his 180 pounder Dan Troop, to go at it.
I know we're now under a minute so that's first time that I've seen he didn't really penetrate through drop down but he wasn't able to penetrate him.
Didn't get a good step before you're going to go 510 today.
Referee Pat McCormick of Hampton, Virginia, the NCAA National Wrestling officiating coordinator, no less, is calling Chief McAllister.
Yeah, that's right.
Our our producer, Doug Drucker, just reminded us that if he makes the Pat McCormick makes a mistake, there's no way for him to complain to.
Okay.
No, there's a white telephone over there on the edge.
I suppose I may pick that up.
And the only way there is a double leg and a knee.
But he didn't.
Again, it was a little closer in the last time, but it wasn't able to penetrate.
A lot of that credit.
Goes to Joel.
Share it with good hip action right there was able to sprawl, put pressure on croup croup hit a brick wall is what happened 25 seconds to go.
You're right, Star.
And a 5 to 1 lead for the man in black, Joel Sherrill.
You think about it.
If you did hit a brick wall, how many times would you want to go back in?
It hurt.
And that's what you know, that's the beauty of Joel.
Share it and there is a truth is behind 5 to 1.
But he was just penalized for inactivity.
His frustration that is not unable to penetrate.
Sheriff Jarrett's not only tough offensively, but he's so tough defensively that he scares off the opponent and no right time.
But a big win, a very important win for sheriff.
No solidifying his position.
Number three, giving his team three more points and the Hawks are up 25 to 12.
Well, this should be a really good match right here.
Heavyweight Jonathan North.
Number three, Todd Kenny of Iowa State.
Number four.
Now, Austin Dark has never lost to Kenny, but they both know that they're each good.
They're each gained national caliber.
They've wrestled as far back as the high school state finals when Austin north from West Liberty beat Kenny from DeWitt for the state title John Austin Dorp of Iowa in the black against Todd Kenny of Iowa State in the red at heavyweight.
We are just underway 20 seconds into the first period of their match, Austin Dark has usually come after Kenny pretty heavily.
He's attacked him, not been really patient, but he has taken a somewhat different tack here at the beginning of this period.
And obviously we have a contrasting body styles right here.
And of course, sometimes and in this case it does mean there's a different style of wrestling.
You look at John Austin, Dorian, he actually learned to wrestle is 155 pounder in high school and he's kept it up, those kind of low level moves and he can also throw Kenny is always been a heavyweight tends to stay in the situation where he wants to keep on top of his opponent Austin Dorff will go under Yeah.
Now this is going to be important because the siege, the place.
Yes, that's right.
But he did a nice job there, almost completing it.
But that was him staying on top of his opponent.
Now to see if Todd Kenny, word of, let's say, win and maybe reverse his position in third, fourth place for third, you get to the Nationals, they show up in opposite brackets.
He may have a better chance of getting to the finals.
You never know.
Yeah.
Now these are always big matches this time of the year, even though the team score is decided, Iowa has won this meet.
Come on, guys.
Shots at this is important.
They're a nice high crotch.
Yeah, good ones.
I mean, you don't pay him to lose you see him executed any better in that at 140.
250 that big first takedown to nothing Austin Darby.
Oh right here he drives through, covers the hips and we talk about cover and hips.
We talk about staying so tight that they're going to get used that power source that they can't touch.
You want them knees and get your knee off it.
Where they go, Kenny comes to his feet, gets out 2 to 1.
So here we go on the feet again, where Austin Darby got the first mark case, very talented athlete and he moves well for a big guy.
He even has to cut a little weight to make that that limit for heavyweight.
He weighed 276.
Now the limit is to 75.
So he have he got a £2 allowance there.
Got it?
Yeah.
Got a pound under the team step because of I was having wrestled in that last night also and it's one month before the Nationals but there's also a drop again in the high crotch to rise across the body and he scores again takedown 28 seconds he's been able to change levels go under lot of people don't like to go under the heavyweights but those that are big enough he can go under there was yeah I mean and a lot of coaches would just as soon they're heavyweights don't go under big heavy weights anything can happen if you don't keep good position you get stretched out and they land on top of you.
But he's that good.
That's right.
That's that's at the point he does a nice job of keeping good position.
We're near the end of the first period and there'll be no escape.
Here is for one Austin Mark in what we mean here by good position.
Here's the second takedown.
He gets his hips underneath him, extends cuts across and gets the two points.
Notice how Austin Dorp used hips right there.
He didn't just drive through without bringing his hips underneath him.
He has 43 seconds of riding time.
There's some problem with the clock and Pedro satisfies his bicep.
It's been it's been taken care of and away they go.
Now, I think it was Austin Darby's choice.
I believe I'm not sure whose choice it was.
I wasn't looking up because whoever's choice it was decided not to go on the mat, decided to stay up.
We'll soon find out when we get to the third period.
I wouldn't be surprised.
Was also indoor.
Get your head session.
You may very well have been watching and I've seen it.
Both sides are doing a nice job of trying to keep the inside position and keeping a lot of pressure on Kenny right there, forcing him off the mat.
I need to we have a minute and 20 seconds to go in the second period at heavyweight John Austin talk of Iowa in the black Todd Kenny of Iowa State, 4 to 1 after two takedowns in the first period.
Two nice what are known as high crotch moves kinds of things.
You would see 118 pounders, 150 pounders, maybe.
It's interesting.
Sometimes you get heavyweights that really did start freshman, sophomore, junior years at lower weights and heavyweight.
They learned to wrestle a different way than the heavyweight does.
And it helps you makes you a lot more mobile action guys actually keep the action going for two on Austin Darby.
Kenny a couple of times has had the beginnings of a little short arms stop pulling of Austin Darko off balance, but he was not able to get him out of position and take advantage of it.
And Austin Dorff doesn't want him to get under the arms.
John Austin Dorp of Iowa in the black, Lee at the top.
Kenny for two one, both guys walked and here he comes again on another high crotch shot.
But this time Kenny fights him off.
They were both worn double one that's got one connectivity.
Well, then Gable has his team looking really like they're close to being ready for the Big Ten's.
And then Dan told me.
He told you.
He said, it's okay if Penn State they're carrying the ball right now.
And if they win, the Big Ten's in the NCAA.
It just better be them that win it and not by us have as far as letting Penn State win it.
I want a team out there that's going to fight and that's all he's looking for.
And I think he's found one Austin dark on top.
It was his choice in the second round.
Decided not to go under Kenny, but he takes the top position here as Kenny's choice was to go under there and then come out and try to get the point 4 to 2.
Now, a takedown by Kenny would tie it because there is no riding time advantage in the second part of this match.
That's £150.
Iowa's had 13 takedowns and Iowa State has had four and all of those by Harrison, £158.
Iowa State hasn't had a takedown since, although Matt Johnson did get a fall out.
Well, actually, Johnson did get a takedown, too, in the £177 match.
Hey, guys, I'm going right before this.
Other guys are pushing, shoving a minute and 11 seconds to go.
My talking takedown, Another strong team that's going to vie for a national title this year is in Division three in from Iowa's WARTBURG.
They're ranked number one in the nation in Division three, Jim Miller's team.
And they just won their conference and sent mine to the Nationals.
And so not only do we have some top notch wrestling right here in the Midwest and in Iowa in Division one, but at Division three, there's never been an Iowa team win that national title to wish the best to work here as they vie for a national title in Division one.
That number three, ranked John Austin, north of Iowa, leads number four, ranked Todd Kinney of Iowa State, 4 to 2 with 35 seconds to go in the match.
And again, Austin Dark went after the leg on a high crotch move.
This time Kenny fought him off, but it is still a two point lead for Austin.
Doug the crowd for Iowa State and Hilton Coliseum exhorting and cheering for Kenny to come in there and tie this match, but he hasn't been able to do it.
We might be meeting here again in a few weeks.
And the NCAA, he's never been able to beat Ulster Dark but somebody should say and I think it's gonna to go all the way it has always gone up 42 with for John Austin Gary from Iowa he's going to 28 to 12 is the team score and Iowa State got all its points on fast that's just the way to sum it up £126.
It was a fall by Rick Williams £177 a fall by Mat Johnson.
Other than that, Iowa dominated as they won the close ones, they ran away with a few.
And it's a 16 point victory for the Hawkeyes in this big showdown.
The first time that Bobby Douglas has taken the team up against the Hawkeyes for Iowa State 28 to 12, the victorious coach, Dan Gable and Tim Johnson will see these two teams go at them again in the NCAA days here in March.
Yeah, they've got the Big Ten's and the Big eights in front of them.
And there's a coach that even though he's got a better team and they're closer, there's still a couple of ways that we may see different wrestlers in the Big Ten.
And so like I said before, it may be the day of the Big Ten and it's going to be a great nationals to.
