Iowa Public Television Sports brings you the big intrastate showdown between the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Iowa State cyclones.
Good afternoon.
I'm Doug Brown, welcoming you to our 13th season of college wrestling here on Iowa Public Television.
We'll be here on Tuesday nights at 9:00, and we'll have two more of these big weekend specials with some of the best teams in the United States.
And also, we welcome you listening and watching out of State University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, k0d in Bunker Hill, Kansas, and at KSMU in Austin, Minnesota, who'll be with us all year long and all year long.
With us again this year is Tim Johnson, our analyst who was at USA Wrestling as a director.
He was in Iowa high school coach and he's now president of the YMCA.
He's in Wichita, Kansas.
And just like me, he's happy to be here for an Iowa Iowa State meet.
Excited is the word.
What a way to start it off.
The last 20 years in the NCAA championships, Iowa or Iowa State have won 17 of those championships.
They didn't win it last year, but they finished second and third.
They have some good people back and some awfully good young people on these teams.
Really good.
Well, the youth on the mat this year is tremendous and the youth in the stables waiting to get out his red shirts, hey, the next couple of years are going to be fantastic for these two teams.
The coaches are, of course, Jim Gibbons and Dan Gable, who are now in the fourth season of their big rivalry.
Well, it is a rivalry and there's a lot of pride involved and a lot of tradition.
These two are really going at it year after year and they hate to lose to each other.
Now, the Iowa Hawkeyes finished second last year and brought back to All-Americans.
But the big thing about this Hawkeye team is not maybe the guys have been around a while, but the ones who are developing the young people.
Well, you're right, Doug.
The one two punch, the first two waits is really lethal.
They could really actually be NCAA champions this year.
The first one, Steve Martin, has been around a couple of years and they've expected him to blossom.
To blossom he has into one of the finest one, 18 pounders.
He's ranked second.
He's wrestling a dominating factor.
But the surprise is Tom Brandes, a freshman from Sheldon, Iowa.
He's ranked fourth this year.
And the coaches say, hey, we couldn't ask for anything more from this young man.
The two All-Americans for the Hawkeyes are at 134 on 167, and Mercury makes it a 1 to 3 punch in the first way.
He certainly does.
Joe Mercury is a very strong wrestler and vying to be a rare four time all-American.
He's ranked second.
Another captain, John Heffernan, is ranked second also, and he's moving up from 158 where he was a two time all-American.
And this year he's going to try to improve at 167.
By contrast, the Cyclones returned for all Americans from last year's third place team.
The trouble is they've had injuries, T.J., and they haven't had their three senior All-Americans on the mat at the same time until today.
Well, today is the strongest team they've put on the mat so far this year.
And it is started out with Jeff Jeff Gibbons, who is coming back from a total reconstruction of a knee and he is ranked 12th, but he's going to try to be a three time all-American this year.
Tim Krieger, what an outstanding record he has.
He's a three time all-American, a national champion.
He's you know, he's really fought sickness and injury throughout his career, but he's back on the mat and going to try to win his second.
And then we have Eric Voelker ranked first at 190, settling in at that weight.
He's going to try to get a second one.
The Cyclones also have another reason for not wanting to lose.
They would have a losing record if they lost today.
They don't want that.
What are the keys or the keys are that Iowa, I think, could jump out to a40 very quickly.
It could happen.
There are some close matches involved there.
And if Iowa State could win a couple of those first four, we'd have a thriller.
And also Hilton Coliseum is a factor, too.
And don't forget the lightning factor.
We call it.
Unbelievable Things happen now and they certainly do right between Iowa and Iowa State that just change everything.
We'll find out about this year.
It's the hawks in the Cyclones next on Iowa Public Television.
We're back at Hilton Coliseum in Ames, along with the Carr family there, Nate Carr and Linda Carr and young Nate Junior for the big showdown between the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Iowa State cyclones.
As you can see, Iowa leads the series.
This is largely since the Gable era.
They won both of them last year and the last one, 17 to 15 here at the Hilton Coliseum.
Let's take a look at tonight's matchups.
The referee, by the way, for tonight is Don Neff or Utah.
We'll be telling you about him.
There's the record of 118 rated man Steve Martin against Shawn Ward.
That's real tussle at 126.
Tom Brandes, a wonderful newcomer against Gary McCall, 134 two All-Americans.
Gibbons and the right person against Marino.
Marino at 4210, Krieger's back at 154 Iowa State against Novak.
This will be a great win at 58 between Rylan and Hamilton, two high scores from Iowa, 167 Heffernan, All American against Kelly, French against Nelson at 77, Simpson against Voelker at 90.
And he could also be in there too.
There could be some juggling by the Hawkeyes heavyweight.
It's Hammond and a Hammond against Can Olson In the last match of the day, Chris Olson of Poster Iowa, West Dubuque High School.
Now the referee is Don Neff, a veteran of 16 NCAA tournaments.
He's the secretary treasurer, by the way, the National Wrestling Officials Association.
He's from the Salt Lake City area.
He's a high school teacher and a weight training coach.
And he's done a lot of national tournaments.
He's in for this meet Iowa against Iowa State.
And T.J., the first match, always big, always big.
Steve Martin, who's been terrific.
There's the 20 year finish as we were talking about earlier.
They have finished first 17 of 20 times between them.
What a record.
And the other Iowa and Iowa State.
Right.
And then Oklahoma getting one, Oklahoma State getting one.
And last year from the West, Arizona State got one that was here at Hilton Coliseum.
Steve Martin of Iowa ranked second, a junior who has really blossomed this year, goes against sophomore Sean Watt of Ames High School and Iowa State.
Martin In the black Iowa, of course, the hawks are black and Iowa State in the cardinal color doesn't get that position control this is at Hilton Coliseum.
The students are not back from vacation yet.
So it's not an absolute full house, but it's a nice day.
Lots of people made the trip and there are wrestlers from everywhere around here.
You see some of the old timers from the Hawkeye and Cyclone teams of the past.
Lots of high school teams are here to get outside.
As T.J. said, Iowa has to be favored in the first four weeks probably.
And Iowa State wants to hustle that to keep from having some steamroller.
Get started.
Well, I think right here, hustle is a good word.
What has to keep his feet moving?
And I had a lot of motion here and can't stand on his haunches there for Steve Martin right here, he makes a shot, but this is where he has trouble finishing.
And I'll tell you, Steve Martin's tough right here also on the counter and using his hips well to destroy another man's position.
And he's doing that right now.
What got the high single leg.
But he lost his position.
And so Martin was able to control it into a stalemate.
We'll go back to the middle again with a minute.
44 left to go in a three minute first period.
As you know, three minute first period, two minute, second period, two minute, third period, unless somebody gets cleaned on the way.
Well, I think there's a couple of different strategies here.
I think I was really expecting and looking for Martin to get a head of steam going and have a big victory here.
And I think that Iowa State wants want to keep it close, to keep it within striking distance.
So right now, we have a close match.
What's doing his job is keeping it close in the first few seconds.
Martin there just with reaches off his tie up, he hasn't been able to penetrate what yet what is actually a small £118 shot right up.
And Steve Martin has become one of the dean dominating 118 pounders in the nation.
And I'm not to know what was able to keep his whizzer in.
And so Martin couldn't control and going out of bounds.
We're back to the center with about 55 seconds to go in the first period blow what made one shot on a high single leg and it was turned into a stalemate.
Now here is Martin again trying the outside single up high couldn't do it.
Well, I think that's going to have to make a move here.
Yeah, right.
I think it's a matter of shots here.
I think that he can't keep recording off.
MARTIN If Martin is going to keep it coming right here comes Martin on a snap down walk.
Got his head down.
Martin came around and here's the first takedown for the Hawkeyes.
He fell down.
17 seconds to go.
Martin will probably try to ride him out right now.
10 seconds that tell us that Martin has turned into a Turner this year.
Well, they say it's looking very tough on top right there.
Yeah, he was trying to kind of part of the arm and get him up on top of his hips for two points.
That's Dan Gable.
He's a lot happier than he would have been if Martin hadn't been able to get him to spin around right here.
He was able to get around behind the arms, cover the leg for two, keeping watch, head out of position there to a minute, second period.
This time, the choice went to I believe it went to Martin.
I didn't see the head first choice.
They said back top three, no watch coming on the sophomore from Ames.
He had a winning record last year, nine and six, but this is really his first season in there as the full time 118 pounder.
I notice that Martin's looking to control the hands, is doing a nice job keeping his hips down and he's down and it is now 12 second riding time advantage for Martin.
He has a three to nothing lead.
After the escape, he Martin generally tries to just where he can he can wear people down He goes at him and Adam and Adam.
Well, all the coaches want him to just get after what?
Get after him, start working the head.
Start trying to get him out of position and start scoring points because they want a big win here.
You saw Berry Davis and Mark Johnson with Dan Gable there.
Berry Davis is the man who works with these hard enough, the smaller weights.
And he has some real talent down here at this.
Oh, these first two or three ways.
Now go, now, go.
What?
Couldn't quite penetrate on the double.
Well, I think there's a strength factor there also.
As far as the penetration, I mean, we just had a little bit stronger, a little bit bigger hundred and 18 counter in Steve Martin go three to nothing.
Is the score in favor of Martin We just started Iowa against Iowa State at Hilton and the hawks have a three to nothing lead here and this meets this match with Martin over what in the second period, Less than a minute to go, John yet again.
What is it on a low single this time?
But let's see what he can do for position.
Well, here's where he has trouble and here's where Iowa State needs him to be able to get better.
And that's on his finish.
See what he does.
Mark, staying in on the ways from behind, why has to turn it on it and Martin is hanging on and we have 16 seconds to go.
And a stalemate.
Yeah, a lot of frustration with a lot or wasn't able to turn that into a takedown.
Well, when you get in that tight, you want to be able to come out with some points.
Three nothing in favor of Martin in the second period almost out there.
It is a little extracurricular stuff there.
What takes down?
He's trailing three nothing.
Now turn it.
Now.
The question is, can Martin turn?
Wow.
Well, you might have seen Coach Gable there talking about if you can't take him down and turn it to mean and that's what they said that that Martin's getting a lot better on top this year he's a turner he likes to bar the arms and get going and they're saying, okay, let's see your stuff right now what gets to his feet and but they're off the mat on the edge.
No score you got to be able to.
And if he is the corner, you've got to be able to turn in this type of situation.
Good half Martin ranked second in the country.
The only loss here was to Corey Bayes of Oklahoma State and something of a controversial match.
Martin gets the leg in there, still on the edge at this position.
Martin's going to try to turn, but what wants to get out of bounds is trailing three nothing inside.
Martin has the knee blocked in behind as you see he's going to try to turn it in some Kirk action here above the knee up on high on the thigh there put a little pain and try to turning right here.
And he wants to keep him inside the stripe there.
He's awfully close to the edge.
He's going to have to bring him back in again.
Well, he's wasting a lot of time, Martin, is as far as scoring time because they want more than a three point victory here.
And it's only three to nothing.
Four to nothing now is right in time.
Doug, American 2 seconds are riding time.
Martin has a potential point.
As you know, in college wrestling, if one wrestler has a minute or more advantage time in the top position than his opponent, he gets a point added on at the end.
It doesn't show up on the scoreboard until after the match is over.
Three nothing March 1st Match Iowa against Iowa State gets the leg in as soon as what comes up.
Well, something that watch not doing that Martin didn't do is get to the arm He's he's trying to fight the hands after the hands are locked where Martin's controlling the hands as it came up.
So you'll notice as they just went off the mat the last time Martin had control and they and what was trying to fight his hands after they were locked.
Martin is the man who call time here just for a moment, for instance, in trouble with his arm or his grip right here.
Martin already had control there with the hands.
And what needs to do is come up controlling the hands and not come up and then try to controlling.
Martin landed on his own elbow or twisted it a little bit in such a way as to sing himself in the ribs.
So we're ready to go again.
That's Shaun White.
He's one of the aims high school wrestlers in this Iowa State team here in there tonight is Jeff Gibbons.
Martin looking to tilt.
He can less than a minute to go three nothing Martin Lee got to take down in the first period.
Okay.
Now he's above the knee again.
He's trying to tuck.
He's not very he doesn't have it very tight back.
He doesn't have it at all.
Now, again, and the Turk is the lock up with the legs on the legs.
Right here.
Right here.
He got his hips out and he's got he's got control the hands.
But they ran out of bounds.
Right.
Think, Martin, 28 seconds to go.
All right.
Like it is.
Coming up next at 126, Gary McCall for Iowa State against Tom Brandes for Iowa.
On the whistle tight waist by Martin.
He got a good tight waist and that's the thing that what didn't want to have happen he got into a position where he could have lost back points.
But right here is where I would like to see Martin be able to ice this victory a little more and add up some points.
But he's not going to get it done here.
But Iowa is going to come away with a three point victory here in the last few seconds at £118.
Everybody, I think, expected Mark to win.
But I don't know if everybody thought it would be this close end of the match.
There's a point for right in time.
It goes to Martin and the Hawkeyes.
Take a three nothing lead the team score three, nothing Team star Iowa over the cycle three.
Now we go to 126.
It's Gary McCall.
Well, Gary McCall is the returning all-American, but the freshman is ranked higher.
Tom Brands ranked four Tom Brands of Sheldon, one of a pair of twins who have really impressed people at the University of Iowa this year.
In fact, brands is ranked fourth.
And I don't know, he figures he can beat all those guys up above.
He maybe he's had two terrific tussles this year with with Jim Martin, Penn State.
Well, Martin, already a three time all-American and national champion, one of the best to come along in a long time at the local comes in on the single leg go bar.
Here comes a counter by by brands.
But McCall is still in there with that high single.
He's looking more and more like a stalemate now, you may have noticed here in the first couple of periods of first, an indication that the Iowa state man have made the first move.
I think this match is going to have something to do with physical shape.
We'll see what happens.
There's a beautiful high leg move into by Franz, goes to the double leg and comes out with a takedown.
Tom Brand scores.
He leads to to nothing.
You know, I see something in Tom Brands that you don't see very often in freshman and that's just he looks like he knows he belongs here dog in this type of competition in the Iowa Hawkeye uniform and he feels he looks like he feels very natural.
This is a very fluid move, goes in on the head to the outside, single cuts off here, drives the double real nicely for to stay said now wait for my whistle Ready Franz goes to the ankle right away.
It's been said that McCall has a little trouble that ankle right now he sits out Ram stayed right on him a lot of pressure and managed to keep the position so at this stage behind the arms and he floats so well he looks like he's a really good rider Two to nothing brands Leeds he now has McCall broken down on his face with a minute and a half to go.
In the first period, Iowa leads Iowa State three to nothing.
After the first match.
Martin Beat walk 4 to 0.
Well, Tom Brandes is doing the job right here.
He's keeping McCall from getting his hips out by controlling his ankles.
Reacts very well to whatever McCall wants to do on the bottom.
He goes a little bit loose and lets him make a move and then he knows how to make himself heavy in the right spots, controls his hips really well.
Tom Brandes is doing a nice job of riding, but now Doug Tom Brandes needs to go for that back point.
He can't just ride there.
He has to work for back points.
40 seconds to go in the first curry.
The referee is Don Knapp, Midvale, Utah.
I must say it's a good sign.
So far you haven't really seen much of Don Ness in Iowa against Iowa State on Iowa public television.
Well, I think the key here for McCall is that he hasn't been able to get his hips out.
And a couple of times that he's tried, Grant's escorted him by getting the ankle, has a nice tight waist back down to the man.
So does McCall, gets to his feet.
Brandes tosses him right back down again.
TUCKER He's going to finish the period on top.
It's a long ride, a minute, almost a two minute ride by brands, right in the first period.
Well, there's going to have to be some move here, some a big move by McCall somewhere because they're down.
Brandes has shown his domination on top.
They set all right.
Brand starts down.
McCall has a chance here to show his own.
Let's go.
It was McCall's choice, and he he deferred to Brand.
Now we'll see how Brandes does in the bottom.
This is where freshmen are sometimes weak.
But there are some of these freshmen on these two teams who haven't been that way.
Oh, McCall has the legs in right?
Well, this might be where now if he can work on him and turn him so that the ref doesn't make him get off in the parallel position he needs to go to be able to show that he can turn that he has something going here.
Come back, go back.
Brands turn down very quickly, sets out, works on the hands, gets Christie turns back in on a switch.
But McCall is still there but Brandes is moving well, getting his hips up to the point where he put too much pressure on the call that McCall just released him.
That's huge.
Right now, Brandes is showing some domination three to nothing as a scorer.
Now this is a freshman here, Tom Brandes redshirted last year.
His brother is also awfully close to Steve Martin at £118.
There's Terry Bradshaw.
You're going to see a lot of these two in the next three or four years.
Great.
All right.
Three and nothing.
Brandes over McCall.
All right.
Rest on him a minute.
Is already gone.
In the second period, McCall did show that he could get in on Brandes.
But the question is, what do you do with it?
Can you dominate from there?
BRANDES You see a lot of pressure now.
MATT So far, Tom Brandes has shown a lot of presence of position.
You haven't seen him really out of position very much yet here in McCall finished seventh last year, 20 GREEN Something of a surprise in the Nationals and there's a warning against McCall but it's the first warning we one we have a warning but like I said, I think there could be some physical shape come into this match.
Double leg.
What?
Graham just drove right in and got to That's a dominate right there right now.
You see the Iowa wrestler going forward, the Iowa wrestler coming on and coming on.
And you see the Iowa State wrestler maybe go running out of a little bit of steam.
And this is the kind of match where the third period could go.
You could see a lot of points racked up, but five to nothing is the score.
Brandes over McCall with him now of the second period at the 126 by biomass or there are a lot of good red shirts on these two teams were telling about it.
Iowa first, let's take a look at some of the people you'll see in coming years.
There's a Kelly from Bret from the Kelly family Steiner capital Austin guard who they think is gonna be a terrific heavyweight their coach.
We'll show you the Iowa state freshman here shortly the red shirts right now here's brand starting in the top position he has an arm bard given McCall a pretty tough time down here on the bottom.
He's leading five to nothing right now.
Hobbs 51k Green's hit Let him loose there.
He released him because they want points and they think, like I said, he feels good.
He's ready to go and he wants to score more points.
Tom Brandes 5 to 1 lead right hand for Brahms.
He goes in a high crotch.
Well, what does he do with it?
Well, Gary McCall's doing a banana there in the position, but nothing's been settled yet.
Here comes Franz around to get the two.
He knew where he was.
And at 7 to 1 in favor of top ranked.
There's a point again for him.
The ball for a danger.
His move, unnecessary roughness.
Well, I think Tom Branson is showing his dominance.
He was trying to make sure that he was cut through and it was just Douglas making a point to link.
But I think he probably feels that it gained him a point there, too, because he made it 40 seconds to go.
McCall goes into a double line.
No points yet.
Franz was managing to hang on from France, just hoping for a stalemate.
Now McCall has only one leg.
France is in a very good position.
He's impressive in towering possessions.
We're almost at the end.
There it is.
No score.
The riding time does go to France a little rough stuff at the end and it's 8 to 2 and it's now six to nothing.
A team score for Iowa over Iowa State as Tom Brandes winds at 126 five with four a breeze and the coaches are having a conversation hotter than that.
I know.
I tried to blow the whistle.
Yes I did.
On the half out of bounds, he shoved him.
Remember how well he could be.
Right.
But I think a little bit out there talking about the penalty on the out of bounds six to nothing.
Iowa over Iowa State and now we got the two All-Americans at 134.
Joe Belfiore, a three time all-American for I will finish second last year against Jeff Gibbons, who was third last year of six last year, third the year before, at this way, 134 male Curies up from 26.
And now Gibbons drops down on the leg.
Can't make it.
And I tell you, that's right now Peoria was 34 last year.
He lost to Smith in the final.
That's right, John Smith of Oklahoma State, which is no disgrace because everybody lost this year.
They kind of got John Smith of the USA.
Right?
Right.
Gold medalist.
These are two very flexible kinds of wrestlers to end up an interesting possessions once in a while because they are quite flexible.
Even though Gibbons does have a recovering me after it was reconstructed in the last year.
I think we have two different kinds of wrestlers in the fact that Gibbons is a strategic planner and Neil Curry is a bull in a China closet, strong wrestler.
And so we got to strategy against strength here in the first two matches.
No takedowns yet for Iowa State, by the way.
Kevin Martin won his match four to nothing.
He had one takedown and Brandes had three against McCall.
Give you some indication of what's happening against these two teams against each other on their feet and good are very important for Iowa State to break in somewhere under the domination of it's expected of the Hawkeyes at these lower weights.
The first four weight to go and it's Belfiore against Gibbons both seniors Jack Sheehan upright going over the back line from right in the quarter this match can be the better off it's going to be for Gibbons Gibbons does not want to get thrown on his back for five or any kind of position like that.
Oh, he shot from way out and was lucky to come out of that with the position he tried.
He didn't have good position two on one tie by Velcro.
Guys, let's go.
Coming back to the center.
They've almost 2 minutes of the opening three minute period.
You'll see Gibbons shoot from the outside.
Not that far, hopefully next time.
But he does like to shoot low now.
He likes to use that front headlock.
It's we've already seen that up and down the right.
Let's go now to in the blind Iowa now Gibbons in the red for Iowa state scorer that's it but we're getting down to crunch time here in the last minute of the first period.
It is not going to sound from the tie up position.
But boy, by now, if you are now, if you are with the arms across the back, they're very close to the edge now.
And the referee down there from back in and Iowa, six Iowa State, nothing after two matches.
That's what Iowa State coach Jim Gibbons Armdrag tried by Belfiore.
He does now have front headlock control.
John Cone and Gibbons would prefer to have his head out from under their domicile.
I'm Doc Brown with Tim Johnson here at Iowa Public television coverage about the Iowa Iowa State meet at Hilton Coliseum that's Dan Gable on the right.
No score here.
We're in the last 2 seconds of the first period and they go through the first period without a score.
How about a natural and no warning, no cure?
He gets his choice.
He does take a chance.
He goes down, ran down.
Gibbons starts on top, they said Now part of the great wrestling great job going.
His coach is Jim Gibbons his older brother.
Now Fury comes to his feet right away on roll.
He likes to roll.
Nice roll.
He has Gibbons Bravo and a big problem Now Gibbons is out reversal.
Well, they traded because they traded points there.
Well, I think they traded good points.
Iowa came out with four points.
Iowa State came out with two point jump.
And now fury can do that.
Two points for Peoria because he got the reversal and two point reversal here tonight.
And he did that from a scramble.
He likes to scramble.
He usually ends up in a good position from a scramble in order to score.
Also, we were talking about with that kind of with the interesting positions that these two guys can get into it, A lot of weird moves go on when these two wrestle 4 to 2 in favor of mercury is given, starts on top.
He likes to grab the roll right there.
He likes to shorten it.
And Granby Gibbons was able to stay with it behind the arms that time.
Evans trying to hold ground up Jared down.
He stands up, he rolls and he's out.
And that was set up thumbs up during the rolling gibbons on the run and it's 5 to 2.
If you're to experience season, tournament wrestlers against each other at 130 for front headlock straight out of bounds he got on the left to see Liz Gibbons who's Jeff Gibbons wife.
And on the right is Jeff's mother.
So there's a lot of family interest.
As you can imagine, Gibbons misses a shot, and again, Belfiore comes into the front headlock, right?
And Gibbons is finding himself in this position a lot.
And this is to help cure his liking.
It wears Gibbons out to be down in that situation.
He wants to change his levels a little bit better and get into a shot, try to throw him by that time, shack him the front headlock.
Okay, here's that sequence.
Much the reversal.
He's able to get the control stopping.
And then Jeff came on through.
That was impressive for Gibbons to come out of there because he was in a serious situation.
It's 5 to 2 now in favor of Belfiore for the second period and now who has right on time.
Belfiore has 58 seconds worth of riding time.
He doesn't need much more.
He starts on top here to get a point.
Another point, right?
Right.
Six to nothing.
Iowa over Iowa State.
After two matches, Martin beat what?
Four to nothing.
Brands beat McCall 8 to 2 your top rated last period.
Well, this is a key position here for Jeff Gibbons.
He's going to have to come out to make this match.
You get a good match.
Now he's trying to tempt Gibbons, but Gibbons is staying in on the leg to try to keep away from that no hold back box.
Close contact of Gibbons is to get out in half and eventually then well up here he's trying to say that was calculated.
That's what I want to do.
Yes.
And the referee, Don Neff, said that was potentially dangerous.
Our coaching staff was not pleased with that.
Here comes a tilt attempt.
But off the off the whistle, still no cigar.
Looks like good gibbons on the bottom against a tough rider here.
Now, guard Don Knapp is going to call him up off the legs here.
Pistone and he did Ervin reversal I don't we're in the last minute here it's 5 to 4 after the reversal by Gibbons.
Is there any riding time?
Good.
There was some riding time, but now Gibbons is taking it away.
Belfiore tried to Granby again.
You're right.
We have only 38 seconds to go now.
Fury has a strong whizzer.
That's overlooked with his left arm and they're out of bounds.
I for I'd say it's a good match now.
As a matter of fact, there are 57 seconds of riding time for Gibbons.
If he holds in for 3 seconds more, that's a tie.
Got in time.
He's got a righty mount and it's a tie if he.
No, that's right.
He can't let him go letting go.
So it's a very tough situation here.
Gibbons goes down on the leg right away and there's a warning.
They want it.
Don Neff said, That's what you're doing.
You're trying to go down there early to stay away from stay away from the escape warning.
Let's bring this thing and here's a key warning against the Iowa State coach.
I'll give him a warning.
Yeah.
Okay.
Schnell.
Say I'm.
He tried now he's had a warning and he's got a warning.
I guess he earlier wasn't able to reach each as well, taking care of.
All right, here we go.
Gibbons has to ride now.
Fury all the way to time for a time.
And up he goes right up high.
Now, Gibbons is trying to hang on low where the clock ticking away.
So we have 10 seconds to go.
And the Hilton crowd is in at this time.
The Iowa State crowd is really in this meet for the first time trying to see if Gibbons can hold on him up.
Johnny, for 10 seconds without getting stalled out.
He escape apart.
There is the escape from the fury.
And instead of a draw, it is a victory for Joe McCarthy.
Six The Fall 6 to 5 because Gibbons had riding five.
That's a big victory and a big win for the Hawks at 130.
For the third straight decision, they go up nine to nothing over Iowa State.
Mel Alcaraz, six and Gibbons five.
And now we go to £142.
Tim Johnson Well, again, we we had talked about the opportunity that Iowa had in their lineup to go out in a quick, boring old lead and they look like they're starting to make sure that came true.
There we have a bigger one.
42 pounder in Pearson over Marino, but Marino's really 134 pounder, Eric Pearson of Iowa, a sophomore from Oak Grove, Missouri, against a freshman from Glenwood, Iowa.
Mike Marino.
Mike Moreno went 35 at nothing.
His senior year at Glenwood was recruited by Iowa State.
He had one redshirt year, his redshirt year as a freshman, and he's now although in his second year at Iowa State, his first year of eligibility, Eric Pearson's been out of the lineup, as T.J. says, all through the first half of the year.
Well, the Hawks lead nine to nothing.
Don't waste that.
They managed to maintain their dominance there in spite of a close call, a very close match.
It was a good comeback by Jeff Gibbons, and it was a courageous escape by Mercury at the end.
Well, that big move, that reversal into a fall was the difference in the second period.
And that's what we said Gibbons had to watch out for.
He had to keep it close and he couldn't fall into a big move.
And that's what happened.
Why still there?
Out of bounds?
Yeah, well, Gibbons scored his points on reversals there, but there were no takedowns by Iowa State Johnny Pearson when Marino got out of position, just countered it and leads to do that.
But Pearson did a really nice job of getting Marino out of position.
Once he gets out of control, the head snapped and spun around for two outs and is himself.
Iowa State really won't be favored until the next match when they send Tim Krieger up against Rick Novak.
It'd be tough, but it could be tough on him.
Pearson was a two time high school champion.
Don't make it out of bounds at a missouri high school ball that had a tough year last year in his first season.
Right.
But you take a look at Gary Davis, who's on down there.
A lot of international teams and won some Olympic medals and is the assistant coach, now handles a lot of the smaller guys in this team.
And boy, does he have some good ones.
Well, he's a mr. and he's done a lot for the university in his wrestling and internationally in and in national Pearson staying in with a farm now on top.
Yeah he has a hammerlock and he's up high he's not afraid to go up high against going.
Well if there were any jitters with Pearson getting back in this lineup and being in Hilton, I believe that they're out right now.
He looks like a very, very confident wrestler that he does.
McCarron Eric Kearney wrestling now with a tight race stand behind the you very nicely hey go get it out It's written all kinds of way spiral ride up and away hammerlock now he stays up over the head is very confident Well anytime you get out front like that you know the wrestler is feeling very confident right now Look at the angle You're right on man 5 seconds.
We're almost through the first period.
It's been a two to nothing period after a takedown by Pearson, and he doesn't want to go out, spoil it all at the very end.
Damn, Gable and Jim, give it no takedowns yet for the unit for Iowa State University.
Those are the way they've scored five takedowns for Iowa, two reversals that Kevin's got for Iowa State and that was a two point NEARFALL over there for Belfiore.
It's down to three now.
Mike.
Mike dominating so far, two to nothing.
Iowa at the end of the first period, Choice went to Pearson and I think they said now don't look you're on top.
Pearson, the Iowa state man of choice, and Leno and Leno went down.
Well, Marino has to get out.
Got it.
Get his hips out back into Pearson right there.
Now get that control.
The arm doesn't have in go the way for Pearson.
But when you do this you have to turn on the referee real call you off.
You have to try to turn the man to his back.
Otherwise you stay in a parallel position and you can hang on there for a whole period.
That's the referee is Don Neff from Utah.
Pearson Hey, Pearson.
And I think the coaches want Pearson to let him go build up the points.
Right.
Tried to spin up and I think Pearson really he smells blood.
He wants to go after it.
He knows that he can turn, but he hasn't been able to go all the way down, out of bounds.
We have about 7 seconds left to go.
Let's go.
Second period, two to nothing.
Pearson ahead, nine to nothing.
Iowa after three matches at Hilton Coliseum.
Take pressure off the whistle.
Eric Pearson of Iowa takes a look at the clock ticking down right down positions.
You know, he didn't move quickly on the whistle run a slowly control the hands of coming to some kind of sit out position or just put on pressure up from the back.
But he's not there yet.
And I think it's an interesting match right now because I know that can get back into the lineup break first time.
The whole thing might have been a little nervous beforehand, but the coaches are going to want him to break loose right now.
And Eric person does not want to break him loose and he feels most competent on top.
And I suppose if the coach's feel, wherever he's confident, then go get them.
Tiger ready to do nothing is his lead at the turn it's a tight waist again.
Reno can't seem to have any luck in the hands and he did have a tight waist power half 39.
The legs are in for Pearson riding on top 10 seconds of the arm.
He'd love to turn merino, but he hasn't been able to do it yet for almost a second period.
Well, I just confirm the nerves.
I just got ready.
Louis, He's talking on the radio next to me.
And I said, Why won't he cut him?
And he said, I think he might be worried about his conditioning little bit and letting that up, ticking down, letting up, taking him down.
He knows he can win on top and this is where he wants to be grabbed down.
All right.
Now goes Pearson, Go down Merino is up you top.
You're right.
You're sitting there right away to where they set as well as three stop start merino.
Going to let them go one leg goes down, three to nothing.
That with a lot of riding time.
The riding time is hopeless.
For merino it's 344 in favor of Pearson, so he actually has a lead of four to nothing, although it doesn't all show on the board as you go by.
Yes, I know of Iowa State in the red jacket there.
Eric Pearson wrestling his first match back well in Iowa.
And I was really expecting a lot from Eric Pearson this year.
And they feel by February his name will appear in the top six in the nation.
And and they're really looking for an all-American performance from Eric Pearson, leader He leads three nothing in Iowa leads nine to nothing in the team score at the three matches well right here as a little foot sweep attempt by merino right there on the edge.
And in that gravel build to lead it to Iowa against Iowa State Eric Hilton Coliseum.
Now we'll have Krieger and Novak next at intermission.
Will have an interview with Nate Carr, former Iowa State wrestler, three time national champion, is back for a special presentation from his school.
Old school.
Check it out.
Can't keep up.
Yeah, Come on.
Come on.
Go with it.
Pearson would like to throw him that position.
He could circle it So you can really see Pearson's a competitor.
And I think what Pearson wants right here in this match is a win.
Doug Marino again got off his face for a long shot from outside, and that's the way Pearson scored his takedown in the first period.
But they were on the edge of them at that time and nothing happened.
Three nothing with 35 seconds to go score again, they start getting better.
Eric Moreno of Iowa State against Pearson and Hawks off to a big start.
They won the first three matches scored.
There were some tense moments for them, but they won the first three matches.
Did score get it back to the center were in the last 13 seconds at £142, but Eric Pearson leads by three oh with riding time and that's where it's going to end.
It's a four to nothing victory for Eric Pearson in his first match back for his coach, Dan Gable.
And again, like Marino's record goes to seven and 11 with one draw and the team score Here it is Iowa 12 and Iowa State nothing after four straight decisions but here for the first time in quite a while is a chance for people to see Iowa State's Ken Krieger undefeated.
And as a matter of fact, Jim Krieger has lost three matches in four years.
It's a tremendous record at 100.
He's one of the more dominating wrestlers over the past eight years all over the nation, he's up against Rick Nova, sophomore from Cedar Rapids Prairie, who's a very good wrestler.
Krieger has had some illness.
He had the flu over Christmas, and it's not known exactly what kind of shape he's in.
He comes back here against Novak, and I'm sure Novak is going to push it pushing, pushing, pushing just to see how that condition is right.
There you go.
Stronger now that Krieger goes for that far.
And that's why this special edition, No takedown yet.
Keep it nice.
Novak came out of that one, now figures out in a bear hug.
This is where we go once that.
That's another Krieger specialty.
It's all going, Oh, oh, oh.
Well, T.J., I'd say the ten Krieger is back, and that'll get me to the plane in time, I'll tell you that.
Oh, our little bear hug right here and there.
He knows where he's is and he positions his chest and he tries to get on top.
But look at that shoulder pressure right there has a shoulder pressure.
And he gets the blade down and there is a dominating wrestler.
As we were saying, he's lost three tights in three years.
He is a terrific wrestler and that's one of his best moves on the face.
You know, I don't know whether it was a little too little too late right here, but it certainly sends the fans, gets them excited at half time here.
And gets the Iowa State crew ready to come back if they can, if they've got the horses and a stout 12 to 6 in favor of Iowa.
And that's the end of the £150 match.
And right now, we'd like to reunite you with Nate Carr, one recent national champion who recently won the bronze medal at the 1988 Summer Olympics.
If you're a wrestling fan in the state of Iowa, you've had moments like this time and time again watching Nate Carr, Iowa, stage three time national champion, beating people who were terrific wrestlers themselves here, beating Kenny Munday, Oklahoma State's great all-American in 19 and 82 in the national championships.
And Nate Carr is back on the Iowa State campus for a special event.
And he's come with him, come with Linda Carr, his wife, who is also from Iowa State.
Glad to have both of you back.
Thank you.
What's the special occasion?
Well, they're going to honor me and give me a national champion ring for winning three national titles.
And it's been a big rivalry between you and Kenny Monday up until this last year, right?
Yes, We're friends now.
So but basically, we got tired of wrestling each other and thought if one of us could make that move down, that we both could make the Olympic team and it worked out that way.
And you went down to 149.
149.
Yes.
And came away with the bronze after a controversy.
Very controversial.
Well, we have a chance to just see your friend Kenny Monday, hear how he won that gold medal with a last minute takedown against in overtime and three for 74 kilos.
That was an exciting time for all of you.
Yes.
Linda, were you in Seoul, too?
Yes.
How did that go for you?
I loved it until the match.
The controversy of a match.
But it was a great experience to be able to meet a lot of different people from different countries and to see just to be there at the Olympics.
It didn't probably hit me until I got there, and I was in Seoul.
But it was great.
It was great to watch the wrestling and the competition at such a intense level.
Now you're all back in West Virginia.
It's your home state.
And yes, that is your assistant coach at West Virginia.
How you doing this year?
We're very young, but we have some outstanding recruits that we redshirted and some upperclassmen.
So in the next three years, I think we going to be tough.
Now, you're still wrestling, you're still trying to wrestle internationally?
Yes.
In February, I go to Cuba and wrestle there in the Sierra Plateau, and that's going to get me ready for the World Cups.
And that's in April 1st and second.
And then after that, on to the national championships in Kansas, I think it is.
And then after that to the World Trials in July.
And then after that, World championships are in Switzerland in September.
So that's what I'm hoping to win like there.
And Iowa and Iowa State's representative here and the international level looks he's going to be part of a very good international team for the USA.
Definitely.
Okay.
We're glad to have you back.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you.
We're back again at Hilton Coliseum with Iowa leading Iowa State, 12 to 6, although it's a little bit closer at the end.
There is an eight car with his wife, Linda, and his son, Nate Junior.
He was just awarded a special gold ring for his three national championships by his alma mater, Iowa State University.
Yes, T.J., it came a little closer there with Krieger's pin, but Iowa still look very strong in those early.
Well, it got the fans on their feet ready for the second half, But Iowa did do what we thought was capable they were capable of, and that was to get out to a40 lead.
And I don't know, that might be insurmountable.
We have some good ones coming up for the rest of the season to air on college wrestling.
We have on Tuesdays at 9:00 a number of outstanding meets.
You see some of the best teams in the country, you and I, Oklahoma State, which seems to be dominant this year, and Arizona State.
We'll have another of those Iowa State.
Iowa meets when they go to Iowa City on February 19th.
That 11th of February meet is on a Saturday.
That's a weekend special.
Okie State against the Hawks.
That one could beat.
The way Iowa is coming along.
It looks like that one could be a really interesting one.
Oh, I think it's going to be great.
It really could be.
And you'd like our college wrestling poster, by the way, which shows our series schedule on it with the dates and the times.
We'll give you an address to write to.
It's college wrestling poster Box 6450 Johnston, Iowa 50131.
Now there it is, College wrestling Box 6450 Johnston, Iowa 50131.
We talked about how well these teams have done with young people, T.J.
There's a real young one, old, the young and the old right there, Dr. Harold Nichols from Iowa State.
What a legacy he left.
And now holding in his arms, Nate Junior and recruit for 68 years.
Mine.
I'm always a cyclone.
This guy's a cyclone.
That's great.
But these teams did awfully well in recruiting this year and last year.
I don't know how closely you can judge these things, but the wrestling people in the news like to say who had the best class, who had the best recruits.
Well, this year it was last year's national champion Arizona State.
Some people thought they had the best recruiting class, second Iowa State.
But I don't know if they assume the brands look down there in sixth place, the University of Iowa.
I don't know if they knew the brands would come out as fast.
Well, I think definitely I think that's the difference right there.
Tom and Terry Brands make a big difference in that Iowa recruiting class.
And you can take them right from number six all the way up to the top as far as I'm concerned.
So as we say, there are wrestlers out there that you don't know yet.
You don't see them because they're being redshirted in their freshman year.
But both these teams, Iowa State and Iowa, are definitely on their way up from where they are right now.
That's right.
Correct.
Although they finished second and third last year, we got a big one coming up.
Right now, all we have to find products of Iowa high schools, north central Iowa, Emmetsburg and Eagle Grove.
And they fight it out every year for that primacy.
And, you know, we've got Hamilton versus Riley.
I'll tell you what, there's a lot of tradition from the high school, let alone the colleges Right now.
This is really like a home meet for both of them because of the very of Eagle Grove.
And I'm sure a lot of Mark Rylance families down here, a lot of his friends and I know maybe you're watching at home, you might be one of Mark Rylance people.
But of course, the same is true for Emmetsburg, and Steve Hamilton has done so well this year and his first year that he's rated seventh in the country.
Now, Rylan is not rated, but that just seems silly to me.
Actually consider everything and he has his record is listed there as fourth to when you put all his mates together this year, you'll find that he's something like 17 and five with 14 pins.
That's 14.
You saw something like that up here?
I would, I wouldn't.
I wouldn't.
To his face, I would say you're a pinner.
Yeah, well, there may be a little difference in size here.
I don't know.
I know that Hamilton is a true one.
50 pounder.
That's good.
But I think that he's wiry.
I think he's got a lot of talent.
We're going to see a couple of bulls lock horns right here.
Hamilton beat him, I think, once before, since they've been in college and an open meet and I meet at at Drake University Tournament.
But really, there isn't much to decide between these two I think Hamilton in the red for Iowa state rail in the black for Iowa £158.
We're just starting the second half of this meet 12 to 6 Iowa League.
Yeah, well, as far as the teams are concerned, it's a must for Iowa State team in the red the Iowa State cyclones right here.
Hamilton must win for them to have any kind of chance in this meeting.
This is their out of bounds.
Mark Rylance, dad was a great wrestler up at the University of Iowa culture, the Eagle Grove.
He had a lot of great teams there.
I used to coach against him when I was at Mount Vernon on both Eagle Grove and Emmitsburg.
They're just two of the best coached really Well, loosen up.
Clint Young at Emmitsburg by rail and at that time and he goes right back to the center right here.
Here's Jim Gibbons.
He knows that this man has to win for him This Iowa state, trailing by six, got all its points on a spectacular fall from Tim Kreager right at the end of the 100, while just just a just at the beginning of the 155 match in the first minute or Rick all the time.
You know looking at Mark, did you know that they're locking horns out here nobody decided that beautiful low single by Rylan but Hamilton pulls out a kept away Yeah well that was kind of hard to understand what it meant to me there.
But you hear me?
Don Knapp is telling them no more of the shuffling around that we've seen quite a bit of in this league right now.
Come on, Come right back down.
Three backed up in the middle.
Rylan gets the head and arm control to the front.
But now Hamilton's back out again on the up and up position near the edge of the matter right here.
Hamilton, primed for Obama's carry, goes to a high crotch.
It may be too close to the edge of the yet he had a nice move.
He was in good position.
But then he realized where he was, had to adjust and couldn't quite make the adjustment inside.
That's right.
Look, that's Hamilton.
There's no score.
We've gone through about 2 minutes of the three minute first period.
How many times are these guys going to meet for the next four years?
Hard to say.
Well, again, it depends on one.
Hamilton grows.
If he actually goes up into this weight, he's at 158 now because Krieger's at 155 of time.
Rylan looks very stable out there.
He's kept good position that well, you see the physical strength arriving at his feet.
He's looking to change that right now.
Campbell is going to have to keep motion and keep moving.
Hamilton has been kind of a he's been a spectacular sort of wrestler, doing interesting things from his feet.
But Rylan, with the keep in good solid position, has been able to keep those sorts of things from happening because those are the takedowns in the left column there.
Iowa, five takedowns, two states, one given, said both Iowa state reversals and there was a near fall by mercury at £134.
The one Iowa State takedown was the bear hug takedown to a fall by Krieger.
But Iowa has dominated in on a single nice low single by Rylan.
He could score here and let's call him.
Well, I'll tell you what Ryan's and he's just didn't put the icing on the cake and take control right there.
But that has a lot to do with Hamilton's loose joints and able to be one slinky.
He's kind of a slinky there, and he was able to keep his head and stay away from getting too scored against him.
But Ryan has to put the nail in the coffin.
Rayland is let's go choosing here and he takes down Set your top.
Hamilton will have a choice.
In the third period, Hamilton starts with a tight waist and the half and up my feet.
But what's it doing underneath?
How much happening here?
What is that boy?
And blue line right on his head.
That one was not type of red and kind of bringing that on himself there in one sense that he's is moving a little bit slow there and trying to again, he was trying to reach back and make a kind of a throwing motion right here.
Look at right here.
He's reaching back behind the arm right there and trying to toss it right here.
And it went right on in.
Hamilton was able to stay on top of that.
He got a shake.
That's a tough one to come back from.
Ryland up Iowa.
Well, Coach Gable said that he wants to keep Mark Ryan two time Iowa high School state champ.
A lot of talent healthier, wants to keep them healthier.
So, you know, that's not the way to do it right there.
But he wants to keep him in the room because he knows how good he can be.
He's gone through all the tests now content, and he's ready to go one on one, come back to the center.
We have a minute, 38 to go in a second period.
It just started the second period.
No score.
Hamilton starts on top 29.
It's 12 to 6.
Iowa over Iowa State gap after first after the first five matches switched by Rylan and he's where he wanted.
He came out, he got his hips clear and he was able to escape for one because he went right on the whistle, because he went right after it.
And then locking his hands across the back.
Can't do that.
He likes to throw he's very strong, very strong wrestler.
Oh, here you go.
You can see a considerable difference in size between the sound strength and the goal that outside single right there.
Hamilton has a single now and 4.02 to 1 lead for Hamilton.
Well you know the difference right there is Hamilton got in on that and was able to finish it and was able to stay with Rylan, where when Ryan was in on Hamilton, Hamilton was able to slink out.
He got back in the same situation.
Hamilton has 43 seconds of riding time right here.
He's in on this single leg right here.
Now, he's going to he's ready to heave ho.
And Rylan went down hard to his head.
He was starting again.
Peter, what is Hamilton's lead?
Violent comes to his feet.
Although Hamilton manages to stay there, keep the half Nelson in in a tight race.
Oh, what is that?
All right.
Here is where he worked that arm off Hardman Reynolds able to slip out there, did a nice job of getting out there.
One point I don't yet know it is to to him With 20 seconds to go.
Hamilton has a minute and 10 seconds of riding time.
You know, that came from Hamilton going forward.
He was working on and trying to work, right, in order for a turn right and was able to take advantage and get out.
Ryan has a very slick, low single.
Right.
A sweet ankle there.
Again to two horses.
And you can see we're in the last seconds of the second period.
There will be no further scoring here.
Take two.
It's all yet to be decided as we go into the last 2 minutes.
Detroit, Iowa State Hamilton gets the choice.
Your choice.
You got to give me a choice.
Now, there's the attendance tonight, 6810.
As we said, there would have been probably more, except the students aren't back at Iowa State yet.
They won't be starting classes until Wednesday.
And that's brakes of the game, I guess.
2 minutes to go.
Hamilton starts on top.
Rylan O'Reilly Hip right here is real important and that was good.
Hip action by Hamilton is coming around.
He was able control and because of that he's trying to get a reversal and now he hasn't.
Iowa State scored three reversals tonight against Iowa.
They had more reversals than takedowns.
Writing time for Hamilton is a little over a minute.
Referee Bob Neff worried about the shoulder here.
You know, Hamilton doesn't look all that big.
And this.
But he can really do things to you because of his athletic ability.
Well, and he's also taking control where you need to keep control.
He's controlling Rylan's hips and he's controlling one.
Right.
And where he is strong right there.
When they were in that scramble right there, he was able to drop his position lower than Rylance and then take him on down almost to his back here in the last minute.
HAMILTON That's right.
In time, you could see Rylan trying to shift switch locked hands, I think, against Hamilton.
This is the violation for him.
One point, you know, it's funny that what he was locking hands.
Doug So many times the referee misses it because they're not right there.
He was right there.
He caught him red handed.
Can't lock now.
He can't.
It was very hard, but it was locking hands.
Can't lock.
That's a big difference in this match right there that it does the for three and the writing time cannot be taken away now from Iowa State.
So it's really five three and an escape be enough in other words for Rylan, he has to do more than escape.
He has to reverse or he has to or he has to escape and get a take out of Iowa leads 12 to 6 on the team score Hamilton controlling well on the top that in that exchange.
Okay he used up about 20 seconds in that time we have 29 seconds to go that's in defense giving instructions to his wrestler when winning.
Let's go to Iowa.
Well, what they're thinking, you know what?
He can give him one.
Okay.
And he knew it.
Now, I didn't mean to give him one, but he can give him one.
He has the win right here.
That's Hamilton from Iowa State has the win right here.
If he doesn't get taken down because he has riding time.
Yes.
And I'm sure Don Knapp is going to be in there on it's said you'll have to move.
But of course, that would be a warning at this time.
Right.
So he can afford to be warned.
There's no warning against Hamilton, but there is the win.
Five foot four on writing time for Steve Hamilton of Iowa State over my trailer for Oh, that's a good win for Steve Hamilton there.
They're going to have more chances.
However, lots of work.
And now it's 12 to 9.
Iowa, 12, Iowa State, nine.
The Cyclones have won the last two a bit by Kreager and a decision by Hamilton being able a 167 All American John Heffernan rails against Jeff Kelly of Iowa State.
Heffernan is now ranked second in the country this year.
He's finished sixth and, then fourth and a deficit and a definite favorite in this match.
Jason joined us to look ahead.
It's going to be Jim Nelson against Dan Fitch at 177, Nelson and Finch Voelker for Iowa State at 90 against either Brooks Simpson or Dennis Kinnock there and at heavyweight is probably going to be Chris Anderson of Iowa State against Andy Hamlin of Iowa.
But there is some question on the Hawkeye side there that's a nice shot by temple that he gets to take that two points and that is an unpopular decision here at the Iowa State Hilton Coliseum and there too, not to happen at least one game.
Oh feeling confident about his takedowns, Pepper and Kelly go 2 to 1 now this is really the time of Jon Hamm and January with couple of months left before the NCAA, if he has to start making his move and wrestling best he's ever wrestled.
He's a senior from North Olmstead, Ohio.
One of two Heffernan brothers is first.
Jim was a national champion.
He was given.
Jeff Kelly comes from another wrestling family from Bret, Iowa, and one of his brothers, the youngest one to reach college.
John Heffernan, his teammate and a redshirt at Iowa single leg by Kelly couldn't hold it.
And so it's still 2 to 1 in favor of Heffernan.
Kelly hurt his shoulder in that exchange.
I always yeah over here we're going to take a look at that that takedown that happened and just got okay right here he shucks him by and right here is where referee Don Neff said he had control.
I guess you could call it questionable, but it's not that bad.
Can you read it?
We hope you're enjoying tonight's wrestling.
We invite you to join Iowa Public Television Wednesday night at seven when the women's basketball team from the University of Iowa and Drake make an outstanding matchup at 7:00 on Wednesday here on Iowa Public Television.
We're back at it again at one seven between Jeff Kelly and John Heffernan countered by Heffernan.
He scores well that was that was unquestionable right there.
That 2.3 points 4 to 1 in favor of Harkin to is set.
Now you see that again he snapped him out of position spins around for two right there all points and support there is lake in back That's good.
That's good.
Yeah that way.
What is one great escape?
Heffernan didn't try to hold it feeling he can take it down again Double leg I guess he proved it you know every time is great position right there that's cut Jeff Kelly out of position the first two times he was able to get his heads down spin around this time he made him stand straight up was in on a double leg and an easy take out.
That's it.
That's okay.
That's true.
That's what it's all about, is getting the other man in a position to where they're vulnerable.
And he has done that to Jeff Kelly three times now.
He set the team scores 12 for Iowa, nine for Iowa State.
The difference in takedowns is considerable Heffernan has more takedowns three than the whole Iowa State team has won one more while out here putting on a clinic right now on his feet.
Well, right here he's got the two on one trying to create position again, create an angle to get in just three.
Kelly got caught with his head down and now they're out of bounds as close, John Heffernan knew where he was.
Go to Jeff Kelly.
Jeff Kelly won that battle out of bounds.
Kelly is a junior at Iowa and he finished fourth in the Big Eight last year, got a trip to the NCAA.
He lost his first round match.
What much of a trip actually, because it was right here.
John Heffernan Touchdown.
Yeah, as you say, T.J., he he started out those years questionably and then came about in time for the tournament.
So yeah he's he's definitely come on in during tournament time It's John Heffernan we're talking about who finished sixth as a sophomore in fourth as a junior Right now he's looking good.
He's not going away.
The coaches want him.
He's pushing the action.
He's doing it his way out there and that's what they want to see John Heffernan do because they know he has it.
He's just got to show it.
7 to 3 Now after Heffernan escaped, he has three takedowns over Kelly.
Kelly gets a leg down deep underneath, can't keep the position.
I again get there there's the Iowa State coaching staff Atlantic on the right laughs Anderson in the middle with Gibbons on the left This is a Hilton Coliseum on Iowa Public television.
I'm Doug Brown with Tim Johnson.
Iowa leads Iowa State 12 to 9 and Heffernan leads Kelly 7 to 3.
Here at 167.
He's got another leg shot here.
Oh, well, I'll put the official first call to that said, no, he doesn't have it.
Then he gave it back to it.
Yeah, that's too bad.
That wasn't for the first time.
And then once that official gets involved and it really kind of always the action there.
But the final that was two points but you don't know whether one wrestler let up.
You should never let up.
So I guess that's how it's 9 to 3, 9 to 4 after the take, they escape back in oh last year, Kelly, in his two matches against the University of Iowa, beat Mark Charles big plays and they were important although Iowa State lost both but they were really big matches at the time and big wins for Kelly personally and Charles big this year redshirted through him back to the same 9 to 4 Josh Heffernan and black lead Johnny take down come on go to four 6800 fans in Hilton Coliseum but have very needed more takedowns for that brand and so far they have carried no change about that.
We're in the last second here.
The warning, green warning, Green warning against Kelly.
Nick, the end of the second period, four in favor of half an arm.
That's the way it's turned out in the meetings between the two coaches here, Dan Gable and Jim Gibbons.
It was even finally until last year.
Right.
In fact.
And Dan Gable won both matches.
Otherwise it was two and two.
And the young Turk de Sousa, as the national coach, Jim Gibbons was on his way to go in and hit the last year.
And now he wants to get a couple of matches back here pretty fast, 9 to 5.
Now, Heffernan let Kelly go at nine five.
In the last period, Jim Gibbons was really put together a program that make Harold Nichols proud here at Iowa State.
Competition around the United States, coast to coast is now tougher than the long while.
You talk about the number of teams that are here, not just one wrestler reference, but quite a few.
And there's a person that's put together a team at Iowa over the past several years that makes everyone in Iowa proud.
It's the legacy already.
Kelly still has his head under guard so happen able to come around on a counter and take an 11 to 5 lead straight, get the shoelace.
Hey, let's use that.
That's Dan Gable's spot, Mack Gable.
He used to come to Iowa State to watch his son wrestle here.
He had help not at Hilton Coliseum, but at the old armory.
And now he's been making the trip down to Carver Hawk for many years.
Well, I don't know the stats, but I know he hasn't missed many matches, if any, in all the years.
And stand wrestling coach.
It's a tribute to both his father and his mother.
His 11 to 5.
As we come back to the center now, Heffernan still doesn't have a minute riding time because he's 2 seconds away from it.
They'll ask him to hold on you're sure for that period and then let it go?
There it is.
Come on, have a good one.
Now, since that's a potential point, if he gets a takedown, even with an escape from Kelly, he could have a major decision.
Four points for.
His team and he has 40 seconds to do it.
Go for it for it.
Kelly blocked that off.
He had a double underhook in there.
And now for the first time, you see Heffernan with his head under him and Kelly with a headlock.
In that 25 seconds to go to Heffernan needs that 18 point leads a takedown for Iowa right there Heffernan able to drop his level right there and it went out of bounds.
Otherwise he would have had two points and was able to drop really nicely.
There.
12 seconds to go there.
He drives a cross headed to the other side and he got it.
He turned that single into a double with his head.
That he had to single on one side, kind of cross wishes and throw the cross for two.
And with riding time, it's a 14 to 5 victory.
John Heffernan It's a major decision for his team and it's now for 14 to 6 I should say, and it's now Iowa 16 and Iowa State nine after £167, 6 to 9.
Now the clock is beginning to tick on Iowa State down by seven.
They have Nelson against a finish coming up here at 77.
They have Eric Voelker wrestling at 190 and at heavyweight it'll be chris knudsen against either against probably Andy Hamlin.
We're not quite sure who will be up there.
Joe Wilson of Iowa State here against Don Finch, another Brit and a redshirt freshman for Iowa.
Iowa State has to win his last chance to win this meet, obviously.
And I'd say to those matches, they're not favored and this is one of them.
Right.
Jim Nelson, senior from Ashland, Wisconsin, in the red physical education major for Iowa State run Jimmy out of that rib, you know Hey, yeah, let's go.
Referee Don Neff sends him back to the center again.
They've used about half a minute here.
Well, it's good news.
It goes that.
Hey, that's 177.
It's Iowa, 16.
Open.
Iowa state, nine June with three matches to go, I think Rutgers will get on it.
You're going to have to see, buddy.
So, Jimmy, that's it.
Go for it.
You go suck it up.
Suck it up.
Three Back to center Hilton Coliseum, Iowa and Iowa State.
If he goes from there trying to get up high for doing it.
But everybody else in this position and got to take down Finch to Vince was able to penetrate Nelson's middle right there right at the quarterback just trying to tip their four back points.
If he can get that, you know, put it down.
No bad points back there on top, right down the power half.
You got it.
Put it back behind his back in back.
He can't get it back a little bit as both legs and you given Nelson a tough ride Don Finch, a Brit great enough to get behind it, slow the guillotine here and go and you not figure a college wrestler would get into something like that.
Now, that's why you don't look well.
He got five in trouble against the high reversal.
Now go to two.
Now, that's a fourth reversal for.
Come on, Iowa State underneath.
But takedowns are much in favor of Iowa.
They've had something like 12 takedowns to Iowa State's to the score 16 tonight, end of the first period, two to right in time.
Let's say it's finches, right in time.
45 seconds right here.
He's just a little bit overextended right here.
And doesn't have his legs in tight enough.
Hips weren't quite on top of Nelson, and Nelson was able to take advantage of it for two reversal.
Let's go to two.
Four.
Get up, you know.
Yeah.
Nelson starting on top bench underneath that.
Yeah, that's it.
Yeah.
You're up.
Yeah.
Right here.
They're in a position where Nelson needs to get off his knees and get up and finish that.
Just like it's a takedown.
Right here.
And he was able to lead at that time.
Let's go get that up.
35 to go second period.
Iowa leads the team score by seven.
You're top.
This is £177 t.j. Just pointed out Iowa has Iowa State.
The cyclones have to win them all up over the bottom and from here on in and it's two two right here.
Come on, let's go now this time to see Nelson trying to put a power nap on.
What good have you got to move that half Nelson.
But how can I get anything out of as fans pretty well flat You had a pretty good job of keeping it like you said, Finch flat out keeping his hips to where he doesn't have any power and you're keeping the risk tied up.
But your finch obviously has more power than that.
He looks like he's more power than he just has to use.
The offense is able to stand now right here again, we're in a position where Nelson's got to finish.
He's right there.
He got to get off his knees.
Finch pushing Nelson hard, trying to take something here.
Now, Finch has got that.
Yes.
Has the reversal Reversal potentially takes the lead 4 to 2 with 20 seconds to go in the second period.
That's the first reversal of the made for Iowa.
He just flat H has managed to ride the other guy, touch bar, arm him.
Nothing out of that exchange.
But here we go to the end of the second period, 4 to 2.
That's Brooks Simpson warming up for his match.
Coming up next with Eric Bulger.
That was the big lightning strike last year.
Iowa City made.
What was it when Simpson, who was a vastly very much the underdog, pinned Eric Voelker and Iowa won the meet here it's Nelson against Finch at £177.
Nelson starts under trailing by two.
Riding time is an insignificant amount in Nelson's direction.
Hey, go play now.
I'll be glad about that answer.
Each man has reversed the other from underneath, but both have still.
Both have been tough riders.
And here's Finch with the legs and on top.
He's awfully high.
Yeah, he's in trouble.
He's got both legs in though, to his advantage now.
He wasn't able to keep him in half.
Nelson 3 to 4.
Gets his escape, makes it 4 to 3.
And I know writing time of year when you need it, you only take it out of the match.
Came from Finch In the first period, Nelson drops down on a leg, but they're at the end of the and nobody can score right now.
It's a gut check.
Yeah, I guess.
Who wants to match worth more than the other one?
They both have the ability to beat the other one to the punch here on the feet.
It's just a matter of who gets it done.
Who executes right here.
Quarter three, Finch leaves, execution comes down.
So, so many times.
Who wants it more?
And it won't come down to writing time here.
Whoever is going to take the other man down now.
Nice high crotch move by Finch, but a good counter by Nelson.
So it's a questionable situation here.
However, Nelson is in a position where he cannot afford to be caught here trying to defend against something for any long period of time.
Stalemate.
I think it's a matter of who can get in, in good position and finish off right here is Finch calls time on time just for a second.
Look at me time.
I'm over here.
There's what's happening on the takedowns.
Iowa has to be well against Iowa State's two reversals.
It's Iowa State and Iowa had the only near-fall.
It was Malcolm who, in the middle of a reversal, caught Jeff Givens on his back for a moment.
Iowa State has the only pin so far with Kruger took no back down in a bear hug and struck up just in the first minute of the £150 match earlier in the last half a minute right here, he's in on a single.
Nelson has the takedown.
No, no, no, no.
The official says it's out of bounds and I and I think Dan Gable is saying what happened that can't I mean he doesn't know the new rules.
That's very surprising.
But that was that was a takedown.
And we have 10 seconds to go.
And it's four three in favor of Finch.
And there is a takedown for Finch.
Nelson made a shot, couldn't get it.
And so it comes out.
No riding time.
6 to 3 in favor of fix and in the match.
That was an unpopular decision in Hilton Coliseum.
Well, it's kind of a weird last 30 seconds there, Doug.
I. I think that was questionable.
Call there on the edge.
I'd have to see it again.
No, 19 to 9.
19 to 9 is the score Iowa over Iowa State.
And it cannot anymore go to Iowa State.
He had a chance to pull off right ten points I guess I'm not adding yeah it would take two pins take to boil it take a and a and a two period decision.
I'm glad you're here with your calculator, my friend.
Well, I can actually go to six without one guy.
I can't go much further in that with it.
All right It's 90 tonight, a ten point lead.
But Iowa State would need a lot of big things happening here in Volcker's off against Brooks Simpson at £190 and gets the first takedown one.
Now they stay there and look up.
Here comes Volcker's takedown in on a single leg.
He's just able to attack the hips there and get to an escape for Simpson to come back to the center.
Last year, that was the big blow down in Iowa City when Brooks Simpson managed to reverse Volcker to his back and catch him and pin him in a huge upset.
And Iowa won the meet the first of those two Hawkeye victories last year.
Walker later came back and was the winner at Iowa State.
Volcker still rated first in the country at this late and the finish right here, right now.
He's had some injury problems, too.
Lately, it hasn't wrestled a whole lot over the Christmas season and the holiday season and some of the big tournaments.
And that's why his record is nine one and one instead of something like 19 and one one half center, seven Brooks Simpson of Newton Jr. At first you go Eric Walker from Dallas Center, Iowa right down the middle and Brooks bringing down the man Look up I can't follow you Settle the map right here, Rick.
They've used a minute and a half in the first period.
Walker who's a tremendous shooter for 195, and that was like that was low.
He's able to turn this he could have could put Brooks into some here.
Brooks did a nice job.
Brooks Simpson right here to keep him out of trouble.
So far.
Now, what Voelker needs to do here is finish this and get his two point good next to end the scramble and the advantage there comes out to be Brooks Simpson because he dodged the bullet.
You know, Simpson coach Jim Gibbons talks about Walker.
The reason he recruited him is because for 180 pounders, he could shoot, shoot, shoot, go in there low and take singles and doubles and really go after people, do shots.
And he's always been able to do that.
He's never shy to do one high touch action by Brooks Simpson.
Right.
There is a nice shot.
But Voelker was able to take it off.
It's important as Voelker do something major here, a superior decision or a pin for his team.
And Simpson wants to stay in there and give it all he can.
He's an extremely talented wrestler.
Well, Booker's just a he's a bigger looking wrestler there.
He's got good reach and actually he's moved up to heavyweight a couple of times.
But you can see the difference there up Voelker against Simpson here to products the Iowa high schools Voelker gets his chance now we're down to the gas and it goes down Simpson Start under your top Take the circle He starts for the international position, then goes down and up and take second for his back.
11 and oh oh.
Eric Holder right here.
Look at Woodworth.
He driving to his hip and now he covers him chest to chest.
Now he settles down kids in their chest on top and he settles, settles, settles.
And Don Neff calls the flop fall, no floor, just a foul.
That's Eric Voelker who pins Brooks Simpson.
3 minutes and 14 seconds.
It's now 19 to 15 between Iowa and Iowa State.
The Hawkeyes, 19, the Cyclones, 15.
And it's within the realm of possibility.
And it's although Andy Hammond has to be favored heavily over Chris Olson, we've seen stranger things happen in Iowa, Iowa State meet and the memories of of Osunbor.
And I'm glad Lou Banach, of some years ago will tell you that Abby Hammond ranked 12th in the country for Iowa, 17 and four.
He had two falls.
He's from Iowa City, although he's been out of wrestling the last couple of years.
And Chris Carlson is a sophomore from Westbrook High School.
He made a try anyway.
Well, I'll tell you what, he has to be no stranger to that type of position with Eddie Banach in the world.
Yeah.
You know, with Eddie Matic in the room working out with him, you're going to be in that position a lot.
19 to 15 is the score usually on the other end.
Right?
Go ahead.
Go ahead.
Now.
Hammond in the double Underhook.
Nice leg sweep.
He takes Phenix into the back, really pretty leg sweep, and he has to lose him in trouble.
You could pin him here.
He could fit him right here.
He's got a lot of time left now.
He has really?
He's in a good position.
30.
And, you know, one.
So it ends in a flurry of pins for Iowa and Iowa State.
And the last pick wins the meet.
Andy Hammer catches Chris Anderson with 2 minutes, 2 minutes and 11 seconds into the first period, it's actually over 10 minutes, 21 seconds into the first period of Paul Warren.
And he having a one.
And the final score here at the Hilton Coliseum is the Hawks 25 and the Cyclones 15, while T.J. hit big guns there at the end.
Yeah, I was impressed by the wrestling today I think is going to be a good read again.
What I would think goes down to visit Iowa.
There were some matches that could have gone either way.
At 134, there was that it was close to be in a tie.
We're going to rip right here on that ball right here.
Eddie Hammons able to get around and go chest to chest with him right there and put his weight on top.
He made himself heavy enough to get the pin right there.
Nice leg, sweep, takedown led to that.
A pretty takedown by Andy Hammer.
So the teams trade pimps at the end and end up 25 to 15.
They're to find wrestlers the past.
Mary Davis Well, they're both members of international teams together.
And Nate Carr, while at Iowa State remembering old days and maybe Stockholm, maybe, yeah, they used to go, you betcha Hilton Coliseum, where we've seen Iowa take Iowa State 25 to 15.
It started out all Iowa.
They won the first matches, the first four matches, Steve Martin, Tom Brandt, Joe Curry, the very close 65 over Gibbons and.
Then at 142.
Eric Harrison for nothing over Marino.
Well, I was just in there with Tom Brady again.
We talked about him.
I think that he showed some domination that was surprising and and yet it was definite.
Right There is a mike Nance.
Yeah Iowa State wrestler, star of the past at 153.
You gave the cyclones some hope with a spectacular fall over Rick Novak.
At 158, Steve Hamilton edged Mark Rylance 5 to 4.
And finally there it was, Iowa for a couple of matches, Heffernan and Finch Pfeiffer that got a major decision and it looked like they were going to put it away.
But Alker at 100 night, it caught Brooks Simpson in a very, very big pen that made a difference, and it gave Iowa State a chance to catch the Hawkeyes.
But at heavyweight Andy Hamlin was not to be denied.
He he got a chance to make that get the job done at heavyweight and Iowa wins 25 to 15 before a crowd at Iowa State that got to see a lot of wrestling of various kinds on that tape.
Well, I think so.
They got to see some young wrestler, some veteran wrestlers and some actually, you know, what do we do, have three, three falls in this meet?
Yes, we had a great year.
That's not usual, really, I think, for an Iowa Iowa State meet and people come to see those.
There's no doubt about it.
