Iowa Public Television presents College Wrestling.
It's the Iowa Hawkeyes versus the Iowa State Cyclones.
It's that time again as the nation's two premier wrestling squads are set to square off for the first time in a long time.
The number one ranking will not be on the line as the tough Oklahoma State Cowboys are riding high in the rankings with Iowa and Iowa State right behind now, but quite likely to be in the driver's seat come March.
Good evening, everybody.
I'm Doug Brown.
And I'm Dave Hardy.
And here we are again for the annual summit meeting between Iowa and Iowa State.
It'll be a great one.
I'll tell you, you can't really get too excited when there's always something unplanned that happens in one of these Iowa Iowa State matches.
And tonight, we expect no difference.
That's right.
It could go right to the heavyweight bout.
Of course, Iowa has had a great record under Dan Gable.
They are five time national champions and they have not lost it since, what, 1976 or seven?
Well, it's been five times, but they're going up against a tough one.
Coach Nichols of the Cyclones has six.
To his credit, and he has 450 career victories as a team here at Iowa State.
And these two matches, these team matches mean so much to both of these coaches because it's everything in-state and out tonight.
We're awfully happy to look ahead to some tremendous glamor matches along the way, which we'll be telling you about in a little bit.
And that heavyweight match which it comes down to so many times, is if it's a rematch of that third place match between Vanek and Cole last year in the Nationals will be the greatest match in the history of the world.
Without question.
Doug, It was the most outstanding match in the national tournament last year and it could make all the difference.
Tonight.
We have with us tonight for the first time, no member of our broadcast team on Iowa Public Television.
It's Chuck Patton.
He's very well respected in the sport of wrestling.
As you know, 18 years, the coach at the University of Northern Iowa.
We're going to have Chuck on hand for analysis tonight.
And, Chuck, how do you see this meet tonight, Doug?
I think that the big matches that you talk about are going to make a difference.
But I think that the thing that's going to make the difference are the big ifs.
By big ifs, I mean the athletes that are performing for both teams.
But this is the middle of January and they're not up to par yet.
Why?
I don't know.
And I'm sure the coaches are scratching their heads about that.
Another factor is going to be the injuries that occur.
We've got two or three boys from Iowa State that have that are coming off injuries or they're out with injuries.
And I think that's going to make a difference.
It starts off right away with £118 weight.
We're going to have a big problem right there.
John Thorn coming off an injury.
Tim Riley from Iowa not really wrestling as well as he did when he was a national place winner.
So that kind of sets the tone.
And I think we go to 134 and find the same problem.
So the big F, Doug, that's going to make the difference.
Back to you.
Well, let's talk, Chuck, about these big glamor matches.
And boy, there's one £126 because that's a rematch of last year's £118 national championship.
Iowa has the number one man in there.
And that's Mary Davis.
That's that's correct.
You see him right here going in for the takedown.
You get the left on it.
See him going for the two?
He's going against Iowa State, Kevin.
More time to caucus.
Not being able to get it done.
Maybe tonight will be the time you see carcass there on the underside against Davis getting a reversal.
This is the sort of thing that he hasn't been able to do enough of so far at £150.
We have a match up between our outstanding freshman at Iowa.
There you see him, Jim Heffernan almost pinning Roger Frizzell.
That's right.
Winning third in the Nationals last year himself.
So he's a super freshman and Jim Heffernan is going up against Iowa State, two time national champion and possibly quick Nate Carr quick on his feet.
And there he is doing what he does best, taking people to the mat in a big hurry with a big thud and £190.
Boy, people are looking forward to that.
Nobody leaves early tonight.
There's ad Manek.
Oh, that's a go.
And he's up.
Henry got a lot of power.
And of course, he's going against issues Mike Mann at 190 and he likewise has a lot of power.
Notice the pick he had there for the double leg and put him to the mat for the two point takedown.
And those are just a few of the people you're going to see in the ten weights tonight.
Iowa State against Iowa coming right up here on Iowa Public television.
We're back with tonight's big dual meet between Iowa and Iowa State.
And now let's join PA announcer Rod Williamson for tonight's starting lineups.
Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Hilton Coliseum and tonight's wrestling match between the University of Iowa Hawkeyes and the Iowa State University.
Cyclones.
Iowa enters the match with a dual record of eight victories, one defeat and as coached by Jay Roberson and Dan Gable.
Iowa State enters with nine victories, no losses, and is coached by Chris Campbell, less Anderson and Dr. Harold Nichols each year.
Wrestling USA selects a Man of the Year, an individual who has contributed greatly to the sport.
The 1982 recipient of Wrestling USA's Man of the Year award is Iowa State coach Dr. Harold Nichols.
Making the presentation to Dr. Nichols is Bob Siddons, representing Wrestling USA.
Congratulations, Coach Nichols.
And now here are tonight's match UPS at £118 for the Hawkeyes, A junior from Iowa City, a record of ten wins, eight losses and a draw.
Kim Riley for Iowa State, a sophomore from now going 14 two and one.
John Moore, all important first match, even though both was a better question, £26 for Iowa.
A junior from Cedar Rapids, a record of 21 and one Barry Davis for Iowa State, a junior from Erie, Pennsylvania, 19 and wide.
Kevon Stark A repeat of last year's national championship match, £134 for the Hawkeyes, a junior from Emmetsburg, a record of 18 and for Jeff Kerber for the state, who's a freshman from Waterloo 13 and five.
Stuart Carter for Joe Gibbons, who looks like he's out for the year £142 for the Hawkeyes.
Freshman from Emmetsburg, a record of ten wins, seven losses.
Bob Coffey for Iowa State, a senior from River Grove, Illinois, 14 and one Randy Conrad £150 for Iowa.
A freshman from North Olmstead, Ohio, 11 and two.
Jim Heffernan, the Gore Iowa State, a senior from Erie 19 and zero.
Nate Oh, that'll be a super match.
Freshman against national champion 158 for Iowa, a junior from Cedar Rapids, 22 wins, no losses.
Jim Zaleski for Iowa State, a senior from Rock Mart, Georgia, 11 to 1 to Murray.
Bruce Zaleski is the defending national champion, 167 for the Hawkeyes, a freshman from Baltimore, 13 and five.
Rico Schipper, a four Iowa State senior from Lisbon, nine and five.
Jim Lord, that's another one of those iffy matches, but it's all important in this particular meet tonight, £177 for Iowa.
A freshman from Colorado Springs, Colorado, a record of 18 and six Duane Gold made that four Iowa State senior from Urbandale 13 zero and one carry.
Oh, come on.
Last year's runner up at that weight, 194 Iowa senior from Port Jervis, New York, 19 and one.
Ed Bennett for Iowa State, a senior from Marshalltown.
But DiNardo, my man, that's the one.
A lot of people have come here to see the heavyweights for Iowa, a senior from Port Jervis, New York, 17 and two Lou Bennett for Iowa State, a senior before Card 17 three with, oh, and they had last year one of the best matches we've ever seen.
I'll tell you, this is a funny thing that happened.
The referee has been changed at the last minute.
We have Don Miller of Fort Dodge.
He has a he has a microphone and he's out in charge tonight, Coach at Fort Dodge High School.
The official from Minnesota was scheduled to be here, Couldn't make it.
And here's Don Miller talking to the people you want.
Odd.
I wouldn't know how to even.
All right.
Iowa State gets odd at Iowa even.
That's the way they finished in the NCAA in the last half dozen years.
You see five in a row for Iowa for 1977.
Iowa State's always been in the top three.
That's in the cable era now, over 20 years.
Look at that Iowa State, 18 years in the top ten.
We're also using an assistant referee tonight, as you'll note.
Is it going to be a assistant referee, Matt?
Judge is going to be assistant referee, I'm sure Bob said in Waterloo.
And of course, a very prominent official over the years work more national championships.
No, the other official in the country, Tim Riley for Iowa in the black against John Thorn of Iowa State.
Chuck Patton in our book just before the Meet Start, told you that he considers this an important match between two boys who are somewhat question marks at this time.
And it's on top of that, you have the first match setting, so much of the pace of the entire duel, and they're after each other out there now with no advantage.
So far, both boys are looking for an opening look, setting each other up outside Timmy, outside on an inside tie up there by Thorn.
You see, Thorn has a heavy bandage around his right knee.
He hurt.
It's a matter of fact.
He's back in the lineup quicker than it looked he would be when you first heard that knee.
Those things, as you know, and these are very tough to deal with, no scarring.
We are now a minute into the first period of Iowa against Iowa State.
The hawks in the second half, first of two duels this year.
We'll have another one in February on the 19th.
Thorns in there pretty tight now at the forearm and the waist.
And that is going on.
We have one falling all this time.
It's a penalty point that should increase activity out in the middle of the mat.
Notice both boys are in the center in the ten foot circle.
That's where most of wrestling should take place.
Also, upper body situations so far, tie ups, no shots have been taken to make the least little mistake by the competitor.
What caused him to?
There was a shot from too far out by Thorn, easily countered by Roddy, blocking off underneath that lucky tire.
Sometimes if there's no scoring, though, that can be the difference in who gets well.
Reilly has already been warned, so there won't be any need for that automatic warning at the end of the period right away.
Not a lot of activity yet since that selling hour warning.
But again, both boys are tying up and they're pretty tough dating each other off, blocking off with the head back to the center with just about 58 seconds a minute left to go.
Born of Iowa in the black, tried on underarm spin.
Let's see if it goes.
No point.
Yes.
Still scrimmaging for the kick.
The thorns got him locked up, but only if he can free that hand.
Get up now and make sure to manage the step across and come out of it.
It's 40 seconds left.
No score again.
Goran was able to circle and face off.
Maintain the neutral position.
33 seconds left in the first period.
Come on, just push.
John Thorn of Iowa State.
On the left in the red, Tim Riley, who's been doing a lot of weight for most of it.
That's the point.
Warning for thorn notice the one point was given to Iowa State for the starting call against Riley.
And of course, the double stalling call meant that Thorn was called the first time.
So the next time he'll be penalized.
One point you'll see that clock ticked away in the last seconds of each period.
And as you saw when it stopped, there were only about 3 seconds left to go.
There'll be no scoring more in this period, one to nothing.
Iowa State gets the choice in the odd matches so far and decides whether he wants to go up or go down.
He goes up now, Thorn writing.
He hasn't been in a match for quite some time.
Quite some time, Doug.
We'll see that that knee will get a little test down here in the mat now.
And Tim Riley is in the unenviable position of having to cut a lot of weight this year.
He's wrestled some of those maybe 134.
He had a throw a stand up shoulder roll.
But the thought of it is they wake struck him out of bounds with a bear hug.
We have about 10 seconds gone.
And that third one zero thorn orange in the top position.
Riley stands up.
He has the triple A lift to put him back to the mat, steps in with the legs, tries to jam those arms out from underneath him, get him off his base, Riley maintains the base.
We could get a stalemate maneuver here, of course, but thus far, nothing Looks like thorns trying to bar the arms.
But Larry says no due reliable to get a stalemate here.
Neither boys improving their position.
It is a minute and 20 seconds left to go.
Second period it's scored one Riley and nothing on his 40 seconds right in time to his advantage at this point.
Remember, folks, one minute that writing time at the conclusion of the match for either competitor or his opponent garners him one match point.
Awfully big crowd here at Hilton Coliseum, only a few empty seats up at one end on the top row.
We'll probably get to a reading on this a little bit later on.
I have a play at Iowa State basketball today and a lot of the same fans had to make two trips with a stand up switch attempt by here earlier, but no points a little over a minute left.
Second period one do nothing far.
Reilly gets to his feet, turns in the goal.
You see Thorn go down to the ankle to try to save that position of advantage.
He has the writing time now, little over a minute.
Potentially dangerous and potentially dangerous simply means safeguard to the athletes potential for injury.
And that's exactly what transpired there.
The knee was in a position where it could have been taken to the outside door and again down on the leg to save it.
But Riley's turned it on him now, Thorns building up, writing time.
Regardless of the position here, he still has the advantage position.
Now he gets the pick with it, spins around, although all looks like he's out.
But it may be clear in the leg for the one, but he's not out.
Yeah, there's been no points getting hurt there.
It's be a minute and 25 seconds of writing time for Thorn if you're keeping track of that kind of thing.
And I know there The Thorn has that forearm arm trapped and that negates any move by Riley.
Now, both boys with the feet 19 seconds to go in the period both of which are tied up inside tie up by thorn it off of that forearm now head blocked by both boys be the ones making a shot for a takedown at this point.
What's left?
1 to 1.
We have just a couple of seconds left and the second period will end even one one.
But Thorn has the right in time.
And here's Riley on top.
Riley starts on top.
Now, Thorn's been out of competition here for a couple of weeks here.
We take a look at that.
Now.
Thorn comes up, spins around behind, but notice how Riley clears the legs, gives him the hips, sprawls, gets his way.
Not quite.
There comes a one point just shortly thereafter back to oh, there's that knee and boys complaining about the knee because he that's the one that he had hurt and it was just happened to be the one that Tim Riley went for.
Now, Thorn not able to get up near that knee is causing him some difficulty.
I think underneath he's not able to move much off of it.
She's trying to get it straight, keep it straight, rather than get caught on any notice to sit out maneuver.
He's trying to execute only about 35 seconds for gone here.
The riding time advantage has been erased and it's uneven.
Match on stands up against one point at bay Robinson that let him up.
Jay Robinson said let him up.
Take him on his feet.
Two don't want us to scar thorn leading the Irish.
You could see that that knee was hurting because there wasn't much much underneath that he was going to execute a move other than maybe trying to stand up here, keep the leg straightened out, get it twisted or bent.
Broken history of hurt for the Ohio intercollegiate high jump record.
Just five points.
Now.
You see the Iowa coaching staff.
They can actually coach Tim Riley, although the injured wrestlers, coaches cannot coach Thorn.
Michael Lane rationale behind that particular rule is to negate the unnecessary injury timeouts in a given match.
Now let's see how Thorn can do on his feet without injured knee.
Poor don't want us to scar, he leaves.
Well, my guess is he'll not be able to put a lot of pressure on it.
There's nothing like being ahead in the score though.
Big Mac Thorn comes, get the leg you won't be able to keep.
But he shot too far out.
But Riley blocks off underneath thorns trapping that near fine arm from their screen.
And that negates any move from Riley.
Less than a minute to go.
Oh, Thorn by one.
Riley glanced over to his coach, and he's called for some more home run.
And then Gable wants to talk to Made no effort to get out of that position.
That's why I call the stall.
I not try to go, guys.
Remember, he wants that.
All right, 3 to 1 now for a takedown to tie now for Riley with 35 seconds to go.
There it is.
Coming up next, I'm going to run out of the block that I'm on.
And what a fun.
Keep that I'm in there right off the cuff to block it off for around behind.
Put the pressure on the other over 38.
I 3 to 3.
He doesn't have time to lift one up and try to throw it.
He has to stay on top.
But Wolf, it didn't work.
And it's be a blow.
It would 3 to 3 at £118.
Riley against PA writing time and factors writing time does not make a difference here it was I don't know what it was very hard for Riley John to form a rather poor form and on minutes and about three four Riley three, three.
So how about that?
That's the way it starts.
If you go against Iowa State, I'll eat it up.
I'll over here at 126, a rematch of last year's £118 national championship match between Barry Davis ranked number one and last year's champion against Kevin Vargas, who finished second to him at 118 and is ranked third this year.
Davis has had the advantage in the past matches, so he's won all four events and he's had the advantage on his feet, I think.
DE I think so.
Davis is a very intensified wrestler.
He keeps the pressure on.
He's a good technician, he's strong and of course he's a very talented wrestler.
Darkness contrasting is a leg to wrestle.
He's a mountain wrestler, sticks the legs, and a good rider, likewise is a very talented wrestler.
Both boys have their own specialties going down there.
It's not to their match.
Now you can hear lots of the people at Matt side shouting out information.
This is a big match.
Naturally, and him out.
Well, when you consider this was the national final over here.
Darkness is in on the way.
Davis cut out of the tunnel, block the head off his head down to go to the top blocked off.
And the crowd puts a lot of pressure.
We could get a stalemate here.
Neither boy wants to forfeit the position he's in in order to improve himself because he likewise could lose points.
So it and at 43 to go first period you said it's been won on the feet.
In the past, Davis has been able to take darkness down.
Darkness has occasionally had reversals, but those takedowns make a lot of difference.
Oh, Davis of Iowa can't go there so far.
Now that one guy will stay, right?
He's only a junior Cedar Rapids Prairie High School.
Yeah, a great high school team.
Dark Keith got in and almost got the leg in there for a trip last year.
Mirror.
DAVIS But they're off the edge of the match.
Minute 13 to go first period.
There's the first so say downstairs reach by Davis Davis has a double on the two on one tie up arm That's right He's trying to control it and maybe get a single shot off of it.
Now I got to say, Iowa State backed up.
That's a call against darkness.
That's one morning darkness away.
And Davis has to lay.
What did he do with it?
He's going to get the lift with it.
Perhaps.
Maybe pivot fit in the mat, no points.
Guard still scrimmaging for the takedown.
He gets a lift off of it.
That's what he's attempting to do.
Doing this darkness, keeping the leg inside and putting him off.
We won't get a stalemate position here.
I don't believe we have 25 seconds left.
The question is, can Davis get that finishing movie to Griffin with 18 seconds to go in the period about two to nothing now, Davis Oh, there Larry is.
Saw it right there.
He got a nice little trip with that left and that single and stuck it in one and a half.
NELSON To ward off any move on part of the darkness on the bottom.
And that's what he's been able to do in the past.
That's been the difference.
Now Darcus, who does quite well underneath, stands up with the wizard hook, faces off everyone.
He's willing to stand right in there and face off with him.
Kevin Darkness is quite a strong youngster.
If you watch the upper body, if he can put a one now at the end of the first period, you try first and there's no waiting time to pick up for either competitor 20 seconds or 11 seconds either.
So there are some lights missing on that darker side.
So he hasn't had any riding time yet.
Okay.
I had 20 made out of that.
That's why it's zero.
I wonder why I said one of 2 to 2.
The £118 match was a draw between Thorn and Riley.
If you just join us, Naka standing behind the arms.
Although he got ahead too far and Davis stands up, he's trying to take that head with him.
He'll probably face off and take the one.
There it is.
3 to 1.
Davis Again, back on the feet again, where Darcus has to prove himself if he is to expect to win against this Iowa National champion from Eric Tucker, that's 30 more darkness on the right in the red, Davis on the left, in the black.
They will cut his head down for a moment.
They're looking for an opening.
But Marcus has a little better position this time.
He has an on his feet.
Now let's look at this voice privilege against each other in this position.
What will Davis do at the Whizzer in there right now the near the of man.
I got to bring him in if you think the four got to get him to the mat under control no finishing move yet now they're back near the edge again on the other side, Davis is doing a superb job of warning that off with that over hook pocket inside the balance darkness is trying to control the leg.
Take it to the outside, Reed, maybe get a lift with it, and also a terrific darkness.
Keep it inside for a half a minute.
We're they can fun.
Looks like we're going to maybe go off here.
And I believe that Davis has saved himself beautifully on the edge of the hat with 15 seconds to go straight down the tunnel, referee, the job market said it looked like he was going to make it work.
That's why he's the national champion.
Three, two, one.
Just a few seconds to go.
Oh, oh, oh.
And there the end of the period with darkest Davis leading 3 to 1 tough pat not on that side.
Touch it team score 2 to 2 but I'm not so sure I shouldn't be in favor of Iowa.
I don't think Iowa really wrestled hard in that match.
I think Raleigh kind of set back on it, waited till the end and as a result, ended up with a tie and should have won it.
126.
Now, each man has had a strong single leg position.
Davis was able to turn his into two points.
Darkhorse couldn't hold Davis in his head, and that's the difference.
DAVIS Starting on top, darkness is out to win the stand up off the hook based off of the one.
We've got a32 match at this point.
A lot of wrestling left in this match.
There sure is 3 to 2.
Now Davis again in the single quickly her by dark with yet oh points and in the aftermath another 40 points of Davis are still in the wrestling continue as long as he's got an opportunity for dark horse just got that with horn I'll tell you the super barrier it noticed him warding off blocking off in the head.
He just did a good job of counter wrestling.
Both boys have done some super counter wrestling on some initial moves by the opponent, and it's 3 to 2 in favor of Barry Davis on the left there, out very close to the edge, the referee is Don Miller, the assistant referee here.
As Bob sits, they came on informally and took over for the scheduled referee tonight at the last minute, I'm going darkness is letting Davis in there a little bit around that body.
But the Nissan Stadium is going to break down.
You're watching Iowa and Iowa State on Iowa Public television.
I'm Doug Brown with Dave Hardy and Chuck Patten from Hilton Coliseum in Ames.
This is the final period of this £126 match.
And Davis is putting on the pressure, leading 3 to 2 looks.
Get us going, Paul, here pretty quick.
Here it is.
And that's a warning against 1.3 0.1 penalties.
Here he had been one previously at the penalty point.
He was backing out of there.
Now Davis comes right back and picks up the finger here.
The intentional intentionally leaves for a one point game, a third period flurry by Davis.
He's really come on strong at the end of this match.
There are only 10 seconds left and it looks like darkish is going to have to wait the next time you turn here.
That way this will be five in a row for Davis.
No way this time.
But a big win for Gary Davis and Iowa takes the lead.
In the meantime, the third, the match down very, very, very, very.
Davis wins it 6 to 2.
You got a couple of takedowns.
But again, that was the difference.
That was all the difference.
In fact, here we see right here, it goes in there deep gets behind that need.
It's a pick, not if at all.
He picks it up, gets him off his late controls.
It comes down for the two point takedown, executed the way it's supposed to be.
Now we're going to 134.
And here is Jeff Kerber of Iowa in the black, ranked fourth in the country against Stuart Carter of Iowa State.
He's a freshman and this is Iowa's youth, Iowa State youth against Iowa's veteran.
Kerber finished fourth, fourth or six last year in the Nationals.
I slipped my mind here.
I believe it was sixth and he was the most improved wrestler on the Iowa team last year and that is right after the wrestling period.
Iowa currently sports the number four ranking in the country is the junior going against Stewart Carter.
I assume freshman Iowa State would like to have had Joe Gibbons in here.
He's had a series of injuries.
And it now appears that Joe Gibbons, who in fact, placed higher than Thurber last year in the Nationals, will be gone for the rest of the year, possibly a redshirt hardship case.
This injury good year.
But Iowa State really wanted him this year because a lot of people are going to be gone on this lineup next time.
There's a lot of seniors on this squad and Stuart Carter, who's wrestled tremendously well as a walk off in his place from Waterloo area, got a visiting dagger while we're looking for some action here.
Of 14 of the 20 wrestlers tonight, national ranking such warning both ways, warning both ways.
Carter and Carter.
You get there, you get there.
Oh, oh.
Got to go one on one.
Jon Rahm tie ups much the same way as we had in £118 that drop off.
Boys are looking an opening as Carter tried for the top five couldn't do it and Carter came around but blocked off that arm and made a counter move work for a two point takedown to do nothing covert.
Jeff Hunter makes a difference how much you went by.
Two, of course, a finish six points for the team in that three, you beat your man by between eight and 11 points.
That's four for the team and more than 11.65 for your team.
So those major and superior decisions make a difference to Right now, Kerber is riding pretty tough on top and Carter's not managing to get his base underneath him so he can get something put together.
Let's go back 39 seconds to go in the first period, two to nothing.
Kerber There is sigh, but this perpetual smile and moving and shiny.
I heard him now one of I would guess on that arm rule, whether it's 13,000, 12, 13,000 people twice tonight hoping.
Carlson Carter trying to come around, you know, kind of a shit out on her face off Carter for the one point it's good.
Oh, nice job.
Kerber Got 37 seconds of advantage time.
Come on.
Kerber wisely gave the one rather than lose to the likewise Interesting thing here the scoreboard has to be wrong because Carter has a second of riding time and he hasn't been in a position advantage yet.
You see, I wonder somebody had to call it a mistake.
I think they probably will on the feet.
Jeff Kerber, a four time high school champion in Iowa.
There's the end of the period.
Kerber leads 2 to 1.
Carter gets his choice up, He takes up There's Dan Gable and Harold Nichols, who was Stan's coach at Iowa State.
That one second of writing time has been erased.
We get to start from scratch here in the second period, 2 to 1.
Kerber on the bottom.
Carter jams in the deep waste trap.
That near arm comes across the far side, says it's a leg goes.
The Navy right here got Kerber off his face He kept those legs figured out is out of that again the same thing you step through there very nicely and maintains the position of advantage That's Carter a good 32nd wide range three Iowa state people to their feet.
Jerry Carter of course, came off has come off of the recently completed Midwest championships, winning the crown at this weight class.
So here at the Hilton Coliseum in Horsham bottom portion against Kirby that's going to go off together.
All right.
All right.
Come on.
You're all right.
Don Miller came to this meet not knowing he was going to referee.
Looks like he's pretty well in the swing of things now.
He came to be an instant fan, enjoy as a fan.
But ended up being official, assisted by covers up and out, turned right in quickly and made it look easy.
Three, two, one.
Bob said this, assisting Miller at the edge of the match.
So we have what is referred to as the head Matt official with the assistant eating at the match edge.
It makes a good team effort in all kinds of situations, particularly where there are some tough judgment or controversial calls.
They can aid one another and really be an asset for the wrestling partners down in the has his mask down on his eyes.
So that started the line.
It's taken care of.
And here we go again with a minute left in the second period down, down, down here.
Now, oh 3 to 1.
The difference is a takedown by Kerber that's right there.
No riding time to anyone's advantage at this point.
Neither Boy right now is shooting for a takedown are some reaches.
But those are those are tentative.
Those aren't really serious threat.
There's a high crotch for Kerber.
He's in there tough on he's got good position No points yet but he may score it in.
Oh yeah, not quite for bad points, but if Carter had held the position much longer, he might have lost some.
It's 5 to 1 now in favor of Jeff.
He's got that deep way out here.
He's trying to get him trying for some back point sprawl.
Pretty heavy up a creek up on top.
Yeah, but he's not able to get his face at this point.
Mark Danner comes up, Kerber trying to tip him there at the end.
It was too late in the period.
We have finished two periods at the Hilton Coliseum.
Our Dan Gable, I think he liked what he saw in that period.
Kerber looked good after the first 30 seconds, less.
Anderson Oh, I see it right there.
He's in there real deep, gets the lift.
There it is just pretty much before that, he came down in that position where it was almost doubled back completely outside.
Kerber starts on top this time leading by four, and he'll soon have riding time.
There's a roll with a step over attempt, but that could be dangerous.
Likewise, almost got off foot, but you can be put on your back pretty easily off of that move.
Likewise, that Kerber on top on his lead as far he could make it the equivalent of five and he has by no getting a minute more riding time than his opponent.
Well, he's got that riding time of course.
So he actually leads theoretically 6 to 1 at this point.
He's riding pretty tough on top.
And Carter is not able to put anything together down here to score.
Now he's trying to sit out, switch combination servers, riding him very hard.
Now he's a lot of drive last period is the one he gave it 105 to 2 now an escape right on the edge of a five point move by Carter which make it seven the kind people dream about.
Oh, it could happen.
We've seen it happen 35.0, at least by far in the couple.
Well, by as he went the other way.
And it's now 10 to 2 in favor of Kerber and that's a major decision territory that was well executed by Kerber.
Now he's trying to bring him over the I tell to speak for the 2.0 nearfall but I don't think you got any good you got to tell him part of the big move by Kerber, he took Carter to his back and made a 5 to 2 match, 10 to 2 and actually 11 to 2, because he's going to get right in time.
Even if he can't turn Carter over.
That's four points for the Hawkeyes.
If it makes this way to get it, get four one.
And there it is.
It's a big thank you to Harvard of Iowa over Carter, the 11 a two and a quarter mile up on the mat in the two over the Iowa State cyclones.
And now we're going to go down to Chuck Patton for a look at what's happening.
An interesting thing that some of you might be interested in knowing is right now the assistant coaches for both Iowa and Iowa State are doing most of the coaching.
The head coaches are sitting and doing most of the encouragement that the assistant coaches are doing.
Most of the technical aspect of coaching.
Back to you, Doug.
And he's speaking at Jay Robinson or Iowa 140.
Speaking of plus, Anderson and Chris Campbell, Iowa State.
Here's £142.
Conrad of Iowa State against Bob Kaufman, a second Emmetsburg, young man.
He's in there £142 for the Hawks.
Conrad's ranked fourth in the country.
He's tough.
Kaufman is again one of the question marks how he does in this meet could really make a difference to the Iowa card because Conrad is favored, there's no doubt about it.
And this could go on with that.
It's one that Iowa State feels it has to win £142 worth it.
Both boys at this point are working some under hooks, over half looking for an opening for a single double shot.
You got two shots to drag.
Let's mix it up, fellas.
Not a great deal of activity at this point.
You heard the official say, Let's mix it up, fellas.
So he needs more activity out there.
Sometimes the reason for seeing a lack of activity out there is that both boys respect each other's abilities to the point where they know they're at least full of mistakes.
Is going to cost them some points.
I was talking to out of bounds with about a minute.
11 gone.
Kaufman made a shot.
Conrad fought it off.
Conrad likes upper body throws.
He likes to work up above.
But you see Kaufman on to on one arm.
He's got a real tight snare on Conrad's arm.
Have you heard Harold Nichols, I think, say, making news, it kind of gets a pin or two.
By the way, he's a spinner.
He gets a lot of falls through the course of the season.
He's one young man about to change his style a little bit as a result of the ruling this year that you couldn't use a figure for a ride on top of your head.
You know, both of you both have been on that morning.
I got to something else warning both ways.
Both boys told if the opening isn't there, you're looking for change.
Your approach, go to something else.
And he buries head like that and a bag for 45 seconds.
Now you see Conrad trying to hoist from the top with a rock, often blocking off or blocking off with the head, keeps Conrad from getting in on him every year where they get a solid call.
On top of that over here, there it is, blocking on the head, blocking off 1.1 or nothing.
We have 45 seconds to go.
In the first period.
Iowa against Iowa State back to back.
I mean, that's Kaufmann on the left, which could get him walking back to the center.
He's going to have to initiate some activity here.
We might get another stalling call here.
I mean, he's been backing out of there.
Conrad's keeping the pressure on Conrad turning the downhill and said, What am I going to do?
Yeah, let's do it again.
Stalemate is going to be now.
Kaufmann came in on the leg, but it doesn't look like a very big shot.
I don't think anybody's going to score here.
End of the period.
I'll see.
I'll get this choice here.
Kaufmann goes up.
No, those down as Coach Nichols looking on with a great deal of interest.
Yes.
Okay.
I think this is one that I would accept being down by one at the end of the period.
There's the Iowa coaching staff, Jay Robinson on the left, Dan Gable on the right.
He'll sit out stand up attempt by Kauffman thwarted by Conrad, stepped in with the legs.
I don't know if he's got that in all the way.
No.
You can see underneath there that's Hoffman right Used to like to be.
But he can't use the figure for any more up there.
No, but he's but he's still using the legs a lot and he'll go to what you referred to as a cross body ride many times trying to work for some back points off of that.
And of course, he can't get his leg free on the other side.
And so they're going to call a stalemate.
I going to say you couldn't see in that shot, even though he may not fall off that top position with the leg ducky, good trading time.
And at this point, he's got 28 seconds.
And of course, Hoffman hasn't been in that top position, so he has not.
Bob Kaufman, Emmetsburg, Iowa athlete, state champion, started a roll, Couldn't make it up.
Come with legs again for Conrad.
Oh he got on the coach trying to stand up.
Kaufman stands up but couldn't get a potential first minute 11 to go one zero.
Conrad, ESU on top.
One minute, 11 seconds left In the second period out of a half attempt on a sit out maneuver there by Conrad.
You got the leg.
And that time he went down to the side to get it and he got the double get awful high, got the spread in there.
Now he got both away.
Graham Lattin Kaufman up to go Joseph for Easley with that maneuver negates any initial activity by Kaufman the score building up fighting time got the half Nelson in doesn't look at all he'll do and he's going off and here but now because Kaufman is in good position with his legs he had some bass behind the mirror minute and 35 seconds ready in time for Conrad at this point.
So he's well out in front in that department.
He's got that rear crotch left.
He's trying to get the lift, maybe fall back points off.
Pretty relentless.
And of course, you're kind of shouting, thinking there ought to be some stalling on the bottom.
But you got to remember, Conrad to dominate and control on top of a point there behind at the second penalty point.
And there the next time as to the next time, the two thirds of the third penalty would be a two point call, the first time is disqualification.
Let's go.
Man's go on to do nothing.
Third period coming up.
I'll tell you, anything could still happen here.
It's a two to nothing match.
Conrad Lee Easy.
And there you see.
Well, that's not Joe Gibbons, of course, who's not in the lineup tonight.
Kaufman Top from Emmetsburg.
He puts the legs in against Conrad Controls.
Those here got up maybe as high as you'd like to be.
Come down.
Conrad.
Back then to him, he may.
May come out on it.
It gets him high.
It may shake him off.
Now, interesting position here.
I know Conrad has a little.
If he could have kept the risk, it would have been over.
Now the question is, can he get that leg three to oh, he's got the play by play.
That big three didn't mean a great deal there, although right now that knee looks like a 15 from danger.
Potentially dangerous.
You're right.
A minute, nine to go in the third period.
It's for nothing in favor of Conrad.
And he has a lot of riding time as well.
KAUFMAN Bob has to keep active here because he's been penalized twice.
Randy Conrad twice last year sat out the year before.
And again, he's into the legs and it's difficult to see.
But Kaufman is trying to fight him at the hands down below.
KAUFMAN Trying to shake him off the top.
If he can maybe grab ahead, bring him over the top, do it again.
He'll make maneuver, need the boy able to prove his position more or nothing.
Coming up next to me, Jim Heffernan against Nate Carr, Iowa and Iowa State.
The score is nine for Iowa, two for Iowa State, Riley and Thorne Drew and then Davison Kerber, one David Kerber.
A major conference put up, but the hand turned in nice stand up escape, well executed first hand for one Conrad out front Colorado Iowa State in the red and the Hawks Bob Kaufman in the Black Sea.
The score up there in the background 4 to 1 at Hilton Coliseum.
Now we're going back to the center with 24 seconds left in the match.
Conrad really leads by four because right in time he will win no matter what.
He will take that point.
Yes, he's built up a lot of it.
2 minutes and 27 seconds where Kaufman in on the leg and he go down and it's out of bounds with 7 seconds to go, oh, you know, if something happened the way it happened in the Carter Krieger match, where Jeff made a five point throw, that's going to turn it around, It was a good five for it.
The problem is there it is the first dial effect, the 390 500 on the card.
Right now, I'm for and five for Iowa State.
We move now to the 150 match, which will feature Iowa State national champion Nick Karl, Iowa newcomer Jim Heffernan.
And earlier Nate car off the mat.
Well, we're back to £150.
Nate Carr, undefeated against a brilliant Iowa freshman, Jim Heffernan.
I personally think there's going to be a heck of a night.
All I do to this effort, and from what I've seen and so far, just a super freshman wrestler yet Carr slick on his feet is quick and he can score fast off his feet and then all.
It seems to me that Mike will be on the back foot.
What happened and in a difficult spot right away if he gets down quickly to Carr Carr wants to see often says he likes to do with other people, just spirit them as quickly as he can.
Well when you get a takedown that quick takes a little spirit away, I'm sure.
Intentional release by the time we get to just one for now, every night since John Heffernan against Carr it and now it's up good Jimmy we saw Jim Heffernan beat Roger fresh out of Oklahoma, who is no slouch.
Billy made him third in the country last year in the Nationals and it was no fluke that he beat him either.
No, he got it.
Almost killed him at the end of the match.
We saw that perhaps here in Iowa, probably television.
You know what?
He didn't get on.
He and the that Russell Carr against Heffernan Carr made the first takedown look so easy that the crowd thinks you ought to do it again.
And it may not be that easy now there hasn't been a lot of activity since that first takedown.
This is one of the youngsters that Dan Gable talks about he thinks are the key to his season, how they come along, their car gets in there.
But if gets the lift, he got a high ground for a high truck walk under combination, got a lift with it in the back 38 right here take at look deep in the pocket.
The left arm of the head gets behind.
There's your takedown.
Nicely done.
He leads 4 to 1 very quick penetration.
He goes now for two.
As Heffernan escapes, Kyle Carr lets him up with a half to go.
In the first period.
Well, Nate looks like he's all business.
He's not going to underestimate Jim Heffernan, I'm sure.
And Jim shows the Iowa quality, that Hawkeye quality that led the national championship.
He just keeps coming at you.
You get careless as Roger Frizzell did that all year behind with the caliber of competition we see tonight.
That one doesn't dare make a costly mistake.
It's a little work this morning.
That's a warning against Heffernan.
A five point move can happen so fast.
Right back up.
Kind of a shot by Heffernan.
He was hard telegraphed.
It gave it away.
Carr failed in for a single back out.
Come on so quick 30 seconds and there's a single that says Heffernan's quick.
He's very quick but hard fought it off with a whizzer and there Jimmy Zalewski will come up next.
Boy, is he a tough man.
He owns £158 right here.
But we'll see him against Murray Cruz next in this Iowa Iowa State meet 9 to 5 Iowa over the cyclones.
The Hawks lead by winning 2 to 1 and two matches to 11a major decision.
And that was the end of the period.
And it's only 42 point lead for Carr, who likes to be on the down.
You also be interesting.
Nate wants to start on the bottom.
Here's choice.
He likes it down here.
He thinks maybe he can score quick down there, perhaps come out, get back on his feet in the neutral position, See what Jim does on top of state.
Well, second escape.
One second escape.
In fact, you see the writing time.
Heffernan's one second young Nate Carr.
That's something all the great wrestlers have had at Iowa State.
And Nate Carr could be the only only the second three time national champion.
He's very capable, having won two already, almost got himself in their awkward position.
Yeah, sure.
Why not?
Him?
Nate prefers not to tie up Jim.
I'm not sure.
We haven't seen him enough to know whether he would like to get in and tie over here or call it the other way.
The stakes are more important now.
You call it.
Yes, He called it against tougher cars.
Always a lot of motion out there.
He never gives you a good opening, a good shot at at the minute.
You think you got something going for you, Changes his approach.
It's always, always emotions like that.
So that's the real key to not giving somebody good a good shot at Jimmy 6 to 2, a four point lead for Carr.
We have less than a minute to go in the second period.
Heffernan Do you want to take down a prize car?
Comes out of it with a leg and four point no, not yet.
Now down eight.
CARR He needs eight, the two riders.
And the way these kind of matter, these kind of dual meets go, you know, order and superior decisions are so important and I'm sure that's the interest of the coaching staff at ASU right now is going to see that point.
Heffernan made the move.
It didn't work.
And there's the single for Carr car counter to the back to the far side come down the single No point yet.
We'll see it now.
He brings him back in, gets a little trip with it.
Boom, there it is.
It's 8 to 2 Carr Easy when you take it back, release it.
We're just telling Carr not to slam happen.
And in other words, you could hear Don Miller in the background, the referee talking out of about 43 seconds of writing time for Carr and one second for Heffernan.
Second period looks like Jimmy got a fingernail in the face there because he has a little drip of blood under his eye.
You're worried.
You got 5 seconds.
Go and Nate does slap it with his hands and the hands are always moving into the period 8 to 2.
Carr started that one down.
He will start this 100.
Nate could get that eight points with a takedown and riding Heffernan all the way out.
But that's the tough way he needs to takedowns if he's going to make a major decision and he's got a full minute plus to score, there's Carr at all.
Got it on the double turn into a single He gets a lift with a three thanks for bringing it definitely extended for one more is a major and there's off a 42nd time period to go to get double the lead Heffernan made a shot there tonight and now is an eight point difference with riding Carr Well three over one will bring him up.
He's looking for the ball now.
He's got his major decision without question.
With riding time 15, the ball making a second for Carr and now nine more Iowa, eight more Iowa State after £150.
Oh, here comes the ball right now you win If you take that double, get the left with it Champion on him for all It's a two point and a four point win for his team 9 to 8.
It's the Hawkeyes leading the cyclones after half eight and here we go it 158 and the Hawks are going to send their big man out there.
9 to 9.
I'm sorry.
Here.
I gave Iowa State only three points on that.
It's a tie.
It's 9 to 9 as we go into the upper half and we're going to see Jimmy Zaleski, Iowa State, Iowa's great £150 national champion against Murray Cruz, who was ranked number five.
This has been one of those weights where I didn't quite know what was going to happen.
And the time out here is being taken because apparently the wrapping around whose leg is not the referee, Don Miller's approval, well, he probably had something protruding there that could be an injury.
Potentially somebody got a head or an eye down in that area, if it's got any sharp edges on it.
Now, meat is even 9 to 9.
And Zaleski, who just as I said, just owns a £158 weight race right now, is out there looking tough again going against Murray Cruz de la Cruz has a leg.
Zaleski takes it away from it.
But at least Zaleski indicates Cruz indicates that he's going to go in.
He's not going to play.
Jimmy.
Come and find me a little over half the time that Messed Up with it by Zaleski, Cruz faces off this guy Zaleski.
Cruz got a leg on him, but that's a wicked whizzer out of bounds.
9 to 9.
After five matches, each team has won one regular decision, one major decision, and there's been a draw with the Hawks and the Cyclones in our annual summit meeting.
I don't know.
They call the Bedlam series down in Oklahoma, but don't call Oklahoma State.
What would this be?
That's a heart attack series and what matches we have coming up after even this record Man 190.
We have Cole and Lou back a heavyweights the last days sports a 22 year old record Murray Cruz is 11 two two actually.
You know Jim Zaleski walked walks with the Nationals last year as I recall, tough.
He's physically strong.
He has a lot of good moves, a variety of mines and and he doesn't back he showed up.
He's a very aggressive, intense wrestler.
There have been no scores here.
But but I don't think you see any stalling.
Oh, no, not in this match.
Both boys have made some shots that neither one scored, but there's some action going on.
54 seconds to go in the first period.
Still a lot of time in this opening period.
We might say, though, that neither boy scores prior to the end of the first period or having been one for stalling.
One of them is going to be worn and the one that's least aggressive, we'll get the warning call.
I don't want to be the guy who's going to pick him at the moment.
I think Siddons, who was working as assistant referee, but Don Miller is the two of them are talking about just that right now.
Right.
Well, I didn't think this period would go without a score.
And of course, we got 21 2 seconds to go yet.
We still may get a score, but stalemate to call it back to the center with only 11 seconds to go at this point.
It does make it a tough call for that.
All warning, stalling, warning at the end of this period while this might settle it, there it is, right down the left.
You just save the tough decisions.
The last contender with the guy at the end of the period, it's Iowa two to nothing.
Let's get a comment from Chuck Patton.
I think a factor that we ought to consider is that the University of Iowa wrestlers right now are not wrestling with a lot of the emotion.
This is causing them to let some of these matches get away from a little bit.
I think that they get to get their emotional high up some Zaleski starts on time.
But here's the escape very quickly.
Off the whistle.
That move came off the whistle.
Zaleski wasn't Really Ready on the whistle, I don't think, and may go to what Chuck was talking about here.
Oh, that has a lot of bearing when you get into this kind of competition.
Big crowd at Hilton Coliseum.
There is a tie so far, 9 to 9 after five matches.
So some people thought it would be 13 to nothing after three matches in favor of Iowa person that talk.
And it hasn't turned out to be that at all.
It's 9 to 9.
I don't think the crews will want to get in here and battle power and power in their tight.
Oh as he comes back from the left it all horsey move he far nothing up for runner Alaska is just too powerful He's very strong very physical that's can get out.
That's Christy auto on less than a minute to go in the second period he's not making very Solecki puts the leg in there gets it up high we're trying to get back points out of this hole those hips keeping close off his base.
Not much Cruz can do right there.
He'd like to score some back points off of that.
He got him down.
We hear the assistant coach in the back.
I'm saying, keep going.
Keep those hips down.
Don't let him get you.
Turn four back.
One.
That's exactly what Cruz is doing at this point.
Lesson.
He is going to be outside and he got to get up early.
But Coach Nichols is concerned about is taking notice, him stepping over that ankle pick of that knee to the outside like out of it 41.
And here comes Harold Nichols out.
He stops and he wants to talk to the officials about that a little bit.
Let's listen in.
Jail.
We're going to watch.
I know what you going to say, that tweak going outside as soon he does.
Again, one tantalizing, real little twisting nylon delivery.
There it is.
You know what the people in the house did know when they're coming to notice how powerful that Zalewski is.
They're getting a real deep out of just one through to the mat for the 241 as a score, Zaleski leads, Cruz starts the third period up and Boston stands up.
He's still there, but no one now again.
So he wants to score points.
He can score big off his feet can score big.
He's made a lot of four and five moves off his feet before.
And I'll tell you, Chris is a good technician on his feet.
He has a lot of good moves on his feet.
Jimmy's the last game in the league.
Two points for the Hawks.
Seven.
Oh, no.
So big when he has a six point lead.
And right at times, I think the best thing that could of any advantage right now is he's got to get some offense.
Offense, throw that one here on your face.
He's got to he's got attack.
He's got to attack.
He's got to negate the last key coming in on him.
He's letting him in a little bit too easy, 9 to 3 and yet right in time for Zaleski.
That's tell you you don't want to go into the last minute against the lefty not wanting to give up points because he is in terrific shape and he really comes after way.
Oh, he sure does very emphatic.
He's a damn gable kind of wrestler.
And that's more than a wonderful car has got to go after the year if he intends to stay in match and not give away any more points that are lucky, there's your attention.
Or at least, again, you're building up to the major superior decision right now.
Well, he's still well, he has the eight now because of the writing time.
It's 11 to 4 with writing time big.
If he were here, he would even look for a throw there off the feet, maybe for a home court.
Now it's 13 to 4.
He's going for more.
13 to 5.
After the escape.
Boy, he's he's taken Murray Cruz apart now.
He scored when he wants 15 seconds to go he has an effect, a nine point lead.
He needs three more for the superior decision.
Tell you what.
If I had to bet the farm on any one wrestler in the country in one particular weight class against anybody else in that weight class, I think I'd put it on Jim Zaleski.
Oh, I would agree with that 100%.
Again, with the rising tide in the 44 mile last game and five for Cruz, it's a four point major decision for the Hawks.
They take the lead again 13 to 27 and become one and 67.
This ought to be interesting, I think, because we have a youngster, more Iowa record Chip relish, who has lost some five matches this year.
But we saw him put on a show in Iowa City against Oklahoma.
He's a tremendously talented youngster who was a pinner from almost any position.
And he's got moves.
They haven't put names on yet.
And Jim Lord is the youngster from Lisbon who wrestled at £126 for a while at Iowa State.
I don't think he weighs 167 yet, and he's something of an unknown quantity here.
He'll give you everything he's got, even though he may not be 167 and he's unorthodox enough that he could beat just about anybody.
I think his record is nine and five.
He sure can.
He's got a lot of good movies at three.
Penn State high school champion representing Lisburn High School.
And what do you weigh then?
Oh, gosh, I forget the weight class at five or something like that.
212, probably a couple of times.
But he has a lot of good moves.
You don't win that many state championships just on.
Look, you've got to have some ability try to fireman's carry against Chipper L.A. that's your brother got a lot of range to a lot of Oh he long and rangy but Florida is coming around still coming Oh boy that generally gets the thing down.
It's going to be a fun match.
I think these guys couldn't do anything orthodox if they try.
Now, you see here, Lord.
Oh, he's got that bird carry move on.
And he'd like to turn it into some points.
And he might, if he gets a lift, he could score through.
He Zeffirelli He's like there's the one boy this game back to the feet again.
The Hawks late in the meet on a major decision by Zaleski.
They now up 13 to 9 at £167.
Now Lord in the red of Iowa State the cyclones against Chapel Rally Rico Chapel rally.
One of the girls that's sort of a wonder for all of the Hawks got to be around and score and points four years.
Oh, there it is.
That's the team scores I just gave you.
I was 13 and I Gibraltar's much taller and I look at him out of the match.
He looks much bigger.
Yes, he sure does.
And I think perhaps he is little heavier.
And the fact that Lloyd probably weighed in a little underweight today.
A minute to go still first.
He's what's known as a late 167 pounder, the second three under arm hook by a calling call against the warning.
Next time I'm out for him, so do on chip early leads.
Oh, ahead on Chuck, my Lord.
And Chip really turned his back.
It was a shot for a double from behind for the score do.
But I was really looking for that.
Now he's at least got one leg in one hand on the leg.
25 seconds to go near the range that Rico has got that over here.
Oh, really Beautiful shot inside the leg there by Lord turns it into a like I said, over and under like a Navy ride takedown over and under.
Cornell nine for two.
Right.
It's called many different things terminology, the big thing and whistling down by the fall.
Three points there, 3 to 2.
Jim Lord takes the lead of check right now.
I noticed Chip earlier catch Jim goes in, shivers in the legs, put the legs crawls, gets the two steps to the outside, took that near leg and went behind the other beautiful over by Lord unorthodox again.
Okay cover just kind of a single split the leg cover ball and scored the two we're in the last few seconds of the period.
The question is can Lord finish the period without letting Chip Kelly out?
He never made a to but we know, having been checked early here on Iowa public television once before, that he's dangerous from everywhere from any position.
And when you consider we have a lot of wrestling left to fall periods, a lot of things can happen in this match.
Lord decides, he wants to go up and he wants to let Jeff early go.
Well, he's got confidence in his takedown ability.
Let's see what Rico can do coming back Gives your offense got Rico Rico.
Separately from Baltimore, Maryland.
Blair Academy we saw was attempting a single high cross cuts on a combination Lord faces off your audience thank we told you that Rico at 119 wins in high school had 94 Penn had a little pushing and shoving on the part of both wrestlers here and not a great deal of activity.
The only warning is going against temporality.
Mark Hagler.
Rico turned his back.
Relax a little bit of an offense and that's the fourth place to be.
Like a lot of wrestling matches are won or lost.
Right near the match is three three on their feet.
Jim Lord of Iowa State Ceccarelli of Iowa always got that head and arms control on top.
Try to spin around.
Oh ho ho!
He had that head man control and pressure on the edge of the map.
In favor of Lord.
Yes, because Rico got what he wanted.
But it was a little far outside the boundary line.
Three time high school champion in Maryland, Rico Chaparral, a lord three time high school champion in Lisbon, Iowa, who's hanging on six titles between two of them.
That's a lot of wrestling.
I've has Rico.
I told you that.
All with pins that.
Yeah, double, double, double.
But it's not over yet.
Really?
0.40 Chaparral.
He tried to make one of his unorthodox plays and couldn't do it all.
He stands up on the hook.
Please stop One five, two, four.
Now in boom.
15 seconds to go.
Lord leads 5 to 4.
It's the second period.
Oh, and we got a lot of wrestling left to fall, period after that offense, we could get some points scored with 4 seconds left in this period the way these two kids are wrestling.
Oh.
Oh, well, again, you always talk about the big the glamor matches, the big future matches with the national contenders dancing on there and some of the really outstanding ones.
And the ones that turn beats around are with people who maybe aren't ranked.
Although Jeff Morelli set a fine record of 13 and five at Lord nine.
And by the end of the period now and we're going to see Ceccarelli start on top trailing by one Gordon looking to come out the back door.
Oh, he's got a far cry for help with one.
You got one more.
There's no right in time advantage either way here.
145 left in the third period.
Well I'll tell you, if Lord were to hold on and win, I think by most estimates it would be an upset.
I think you're perhaps right, but let me tell you with a minute and 32 seconds left in this match, anything can happen.
Anything 6 to 4 is the score.
You see Assistant referee Bob sitting on the far side over there.
Both officials came to the end of the two game Tonight Show.
And I think there's Jeff early making of the shot of a leg that didn't go anywhere.
064 Lord, I ask you, he went for that leg.
Move again.
Oh, boy.
And he got it.
But he didn't do that.
That puts him in the leg.
And then inside quick on the other leg.
It's a beautiful move that Lord has made to take down strum and it's been a matter of the takedowns.
He's leading 8 to 4 generally is out the score five and the Iowa state shot is really up 51 seconds You see it on your screen, 49.
You see Lord, again, try to make something out of that same position.
But Jeff really came out, faced off with in that time.
Oh, God.
0200 at one point escape, I'm sure.
I think you'll get the one point escape there.
I don't know.
I think he's got around it out there talking about it.
Here we see what happens here.
There's a double shot from the back.
My Lord will come to the mat early this past fall.
Now they've got to get back to live action here.
But 20 seconds to go.
And a four point lead for Iowa State's Jim Ward at £167.
Attention is beginning to mount.
And let's meet again.
13 seconds left in this career.
This is where I want to get here.
Looking for a early.
He's really got to make a big move.
I don't know what I'm going for five, ten to go down here.
And I'll tell you what, a deadly fire up.
The big crowd at Iowa State.
Sure it is.
Lord beating triple play ten the trick.
And now we go it 177.
It's 30.
Iowa, 12 Iowa State, that last hit going by Lord with a two point takedown and triple really hitting the 2.1 very familiar.
The magic was not able to get it but he did.
But Lord lost control.
So he got the one point it's good, 10 to 6.
Now it's Goldman of Iowa, another freshman.
He's a redshirt freshman, ranked number seven.
I'm Perry ranked second a three time place winner in the Nationals undefeated this year.
Although he has one draw, Goldman has lost.
Well, not very many.
I think five is all, as I recall, the program, as it normally had been, 24 and one, but I believe he's five.
He's a fine wrestler.
Yes, Iowa need something here because they would like to be right now maybe a little head up, going to those last two matches.
The banks are going to go against McMahon and Wayne Cole.
Don't go away.
Hey, that howls.
He's well known for going around in straight in on single eggs and double eggs.
And it looks like Goldman from well trained against that.
Although Perry's been working on other things this year.
I understand.
Yes, he's been changing his style a little bit.
I wouldn't say his overall style, but his approach is attack.
He's got to rely on some other kinds of moves or a little variety into his attack.
Dwayne Goldman, about just stalling right here, stalling against I'm on your back and out at that got on every match from here on can go either way I would say don't push on and don't put down now see again Goldman is under hooks he's blocking off away from Perry's favorite move which got a better position and not telegraphed his move.
He's got to get good position when he drops in.
He's got to go all the way.
He's got to follow through when he needs that resistance.
We've used up almost 2 minutes of the first period.
They got a Jim Lord.
It seems to me he didn't a couple of years ago and he he went a big match in an Iowa meet at £126.
It seems to me that happened.
I wish I had an economy, but probably isn't the only big win he's had against the Hawks.
But I did was.
It's the Hawks 13.
The Cyclones 12.
Iowa Public Television from Hilton Coliseum.
I'm Doug Brown with Dave Hardy and Chuck Patton.
And a terrifically big crowd.
And neither boy is making any serious takedown at this point.
It was like a bulldoze right here.
And that's a penalty if one or nothing.
GOLDMAN Ooh, both boys double throwing a call warning against.
MILLER Your best.
Mr. GOLDMAN And of course, a penalty point against Hummel that he'd been one previous by 14 seconds.
You see it till the end of the first period looks like, well, they're getting a chance to talk to Jim Lord for just a second.
Between here, Chuck Patton is going to get in for there's the end of the period.
It's one to nothing in favor of.
GOLDMAN Let's go to Chuck Patton.
Jim Lord, great, real big win for you.
How do you feel about that?
Oh, thanks a lot.
Coaching is felt pretty good.
I knew how to set the patience chipper because as a hitter, if I saw the pace, I knew he could break and I could win the match.
You really did a lot of takedowns on him.
Real big moves on there.
That was my strategy.
The strategy me and Coach Campbell came up with for Russell Russell.
Nothing to on the feet.
Stay off the mat.
Oh, congratulations, Jim.
Thank you.
That's Jim La Torre, Chuck Pap.
Now we're back to 177 again.
Goldman leading one to nothing.
And he's out.
And it's a two to nothing lead for this well-schooled guy, Russell.
He knows what he's doing out there.
He knows who he's up against.
Humble, humble.
Good on that single.
He got it pretty tough.
He got it beat.
Could score off of it.
No one got the underhook on it, blocking him off in between the leg.
Oh.
Single leg takedown for Hummel and it's a22 match.
The first takedown again, the Hawks lead in the lead 13 to 12 after 167.
It was even after 150 Zaleski got a four point win and Lord got a three point win.
That's the difference now.
And we got a lot of super wrestling left.
Oh, boy.
You know what I mean?
Let's go.
We will pass them on you with a electrocardiogram here before we get much set up, turn in that accompanying somewhat of an intention released Emma Goldman lead three to 3 to 2.
Last year, Hummel wrestled against Advantech twice at this way before they went up to 194 this year, 1982 83 season.
You'll see him next against Mike and one of the most anticipated matches around Iowa in quite a while.
Neither boy really is.
It's all a pushing match right now.
Goldman is pushing Hummel backing up a little bit.
Got one of them, got a drop in work for a takedown, almost made a little tentative, a shot there.
But Goldman using under hooks to keep him away from that single and double stop and that made a lot of difference here comes Goldman around didn't work Dwayne Goldman ranked seventh in the country He leads here 3 to 2.
Not much time left in the period.
He had enough time to sort through, but it doesn't look like either one is going to score at the 3.10.
Wanted to go down there.
It's 4 to 2.
Goldman And this is one that Iowa State thinks it should win.
And Dwayne Goldman is trying to do something about that.
35 NCAA individual champs coach Harold Nichols starts on the bottom, but he's only he trails by one now.
And that penalty point made a lot of a lot of difference.
Now he has to get a takedown 3543 right now, Dark Knight and Hummel has a takedown, an escape.
GOLDMAN Two escapes, two penalty points.
Humboldt got to foot the pressure.
He's got to carry some pressure and work for that big guy.
And Goldman, of course, is coming off with the other right now.
He's got that apple grip on the Ledger River.
However oh he's got the leg up on yet a big thing for Goldman.
And here's where I was hoping to turn this thing around.
The Hawks lead by one.
I hope we get that.
He'll pick right there.
He got in tough on it deep around with the weak with the way he plays the over hook by Hummel but he takes it out and bomb and Goldman stays tough on the legs and scores these two.
He leads 6 to 3.
Well he's been able to keep away from Hummel singles and doubles with those under hooks and that he kept at it until he finally got his takedown.
It's 6 to 3 Hummels out of nowhere, but he needs to take down the tie.
No right in.
Find the bar a minute Fallen that doesn't hold.
Oh, I should say about all four coaches are all 13 guys and coaches are up now after you take over handling Hummels position very very well.
Yeah.
Oh not penetrated.
Oh and of course over the first month in all money.
Money I had a lot.
That's right.
One that's going to have to be to say well I felt like if he gets back in there all the time he didn't make it any better.
First back.
I don't see it now.
I see the guy coming in there.
It's an out and out, but I'm kind of this against little disagreement there between the Iowa State coaching staff and Don Miller.
GOLDMAN in humble humble.
Well, he's been that was a two point penalty.
This is a real swing match at this point with the score.
Oh 13 1209 and the Goldman winning there, I'm not sure that I would have picked the swing match to be this late.
Oh, I'm sure would not have.
And Hummel has not been able to reach Goldman at all, not surprisingly.
And for the win for Dylan Goldman of the Hawkeyes and it is now 16 for the Hawks, 12 for the Cyclones, an 8 to 4 victory for Dylan Goldman, a freshman against my name.
Here is the feature, £190, Eddie Banach of Iowa and Mike Mann of Iowa State.
I don't think there's anybody needs to tell you about how good these two are or are.
There are some two super wrestlers out there right now.
No man is as good as anybody who's never won a national championship right back in been runner up, runner up last year at this weight class.
And of course, Banach was runner up at £177 weight class that he's had a fabulous career for the Hawks.
They wrestled at the Northern Open this year and man one at 5 to 3.
I see.
Banach wants to get up there and horse at body throw if he can get it, if he can get it, if he can get it.
But man is trying to maintain possession and he gets 50 No point.
Yeah.
Oh, that's right.
Oh, boy.
I know.
Oh, boy.
Oh, nothing.
Oh oh.
Before he got me up in the air with able to come down, pressure him to the mat with the two.
Oh this to be a beauty.
Here's the moon right now you know it's going to need the arms and dropped down in a double gets a trip with it gets a two point takedown.
Super match already We got a minute.
40 seconds left in the first period.
Man down to the bottom.
He stands up now that it gets to lift with from back to the mat, step through beautifully.
Step through there by Banach.
And he has a mike in a pretty bad position here because there's no getting out of here with escapes a while until he can through the leg.
This banks got a lot of power on top.
He's tough.
He's physical.
Mike's tough and physical.
Likewise, this will make for a super match before this fall.
Over here is man on the left.
Still not to hurt him Now, look.
Oh, look.
Beautiful.
Up to four way landing, but not accounted for by man.
It's just been some super wrestling in that last 15, 20 seconds.
What about 3 to 4 man over Barnett, 48 to go.
Here's our movie.
I notice how Mike was right behind blocked off with that Perhaps that arm around comes from behind.
Take that in your leg, then comes around, turns it into a double works up.
He scores his two It got him in a wheelbarrow right now notice Bennett kind of somersaults back through into a counter move but man was able to stay on top.
Man is on top.
As they start to ride, Manik turns in.
It's still a man's position with 30 seconds to go, man with a tight waist with their arm.
The arm crutch got that ankle trapped deep way of controlling their arm with an armbar heck of a man.
HARRIS Harold Nichols less Anderson on the right, less says little smile.
I think wrestling coaches get that when there's a good match, no matter who's in it.
Oh, this is just this is two super athletes, both of them.
Igor, forward, roll by back, countered by a man for the Final Four.
Mann moves to the far side stick.
The half in comes over blocking Vancouver.
End of the period.
It's 3 to 4.
Let's move out and talk to Chuck Patton.
He has Dwayne Goldman with him.
Dwayne Goldman, great match real big win for you.
Put the Hawks back in the lead.
Well, thank you very much for this great one.
Big win for me.
I was pleased with it.
You know, he's been a national runner up.
That's great for you to get a win like that here in early in the year.
Yeah, I was.
I know I kind of haven't been wrestling really well lately, but I do excited because he's got a real intense style and that's what I that's why I wanted to wrestle him, to stay on him all the time.
Well, congratulations.
Big win for you.
Back to you.
That I'm back to £190.
Thank you.
Chuck Patton with Dwayne Goldman, a happy young man.
It's 4 to 2 as man gets out, man leads panic by two.
He's too powerful 190 pounders on their feet.
There is no point yet.
Manek has a laser cut.
The wizard, Stephenie Meyer.
We're close to the edge.
We're very close.
We put it to both.
If you haven't seen wrestling and don't enjoy this one, you will never enjoy a match in the super match, do you?
Super athlete.
Turn in, Take that single.
Now look at the other leg is no point just to make it perfect down man Now picks it up Notice the whizzer kept by Faneca Stay that up and we'll see the let the lift the man and he turns it into the wheelbarrow.
Two point takedown.
No telling what's going to happen in this match.
And I'll tell you today at the way in, I don't think I've ever seen my man so intense as he was today.
I just had the look on his face.
I'm a very intense wrestler and advantage.
Always has that look.
Now he has a lot of head and arm control on the top.
Here's man when he got through, he got the weight of the man there.
Got a lot of wrestling left.
Yep.
Folks with the need for man on top of that may tell you you're looking at two of the best in the country.
20 seconds to go.
You see the clock up at the top.
This is Mike.
Man on top.
Eddie Barnett gets man leading by five and he has riding time.
But anybody who knows that he bam, they close this one hand over here.
Oh, yes.
This is the super man.
We're still in the second period roll by bang.
And he did not get out.
Thunder is born here in Milton Coliseum.
Everybody's on their feet.
Let's see it again.
Oh, their gear duck under combination.
Got in a real good position deep on it and turn it into a double pressure him The man got to do good positioning that was a key on that move When you're ready and man starts on top it's the last period here 2 minutes more to go.
And it's not as long it's going to be a tough 2 minutes.
You can be assured that mannequin Bernie Mac may throw in the towel if he doesn't do better.
Referee now and then move up from behind and get it in behind.
Man, he's undefeated this year.
In 19 tries, there is the escape door.
Bandit got the first takedown in the first period.
Man has had three since right now.
Got it cut back on track, two on one combination.
Oh, who's got to come out of this and has the leg back is on your side and stayed with it a tick down from it.
And now with a minute left it's only up and one that was enough pass just to get the win by chipping on a shoestring to your shoestring right there.
Only seven little rest of the kids I tell wrestle everybody in the first 7 seconds and then the go, Yes, this is just a super match.
You couldn't ask for a greater finale.
You got another one to go, another great man.
This is a good one.
It's yet another round.
52 seconds left.
Four, nine, six, man on top.
A lot of wrestling left, a lot to go here.
Manik gives the impression it was a lock up and throw if he can.
That's the quickest way to make it up if he can pull it off here.
But man, as the leg and if you have the power, nothing after what was called nothing I don't think.
Yeah.
The to I thought maybe I saw him wipe it off but I wasn't certain.
Two point takedown man man leads by five with 28 seconds to go.
A crowd is strangely hushed here.
There's a reverse whatever the man as well.
That's the first reversal.
We've had.
13 seconds to go, Lana.
Casper, crank an over or lose eight, three, two, one.
Man Oh, oh, oh.
He was right.
Now, right away, we're coming down on you again.
Here's our move right now.
Miko then follows him down at 15.
Go quick fighting for the man.
We go off the end.
He's done it.
He had the two points from the end of game.
Manik with a Now we'll hear more of the heavyweight again.
How many times does it happen to these match?
If we had a match like we had at the Nationals last year, I think everybody go home in a daze.
These two Cole has never beaten back back I think twice it's whoever this one.
I'll tell you right now, Iowa has a 16 to 15 team lead is giving him his head, is going to give him an easy takedown here and panic goes up and can finish.
Terrific wrestling we've seen tonight.
We'll run through if you came in late, we'll run through all the results when we get to the end.
The team score is Iowa 16, Iowa State 15.
And there is doubt if he has pulled back, I think he's better fit in right here.
It would be awfully easy from here.
Not yet, but it looks like he's coming out the back door.
But he's got in fourth right center of that three, four and a54 back, five, two, one.
He sucked him back off that set up, but a three point move on him.
He leads five one beautiful move by panic.
He managed to get the first takedown in a big three point NEAR-FALL He's in on the leg again.
Lou, back one of the strongest men for his weight you'll ever see.
He sure is physical one on national championship last year, Wayne Cole wrestled a brilliant nationals to finish fourth and a three point takedown.
I look at it all right.
Physical.
You were talking about emotion.
I think Lou Barnett, he looks emotional to me.
You indicated Lou won the national title last year.
Two years ago.
Yes, two years ago.
Third last year.
This was the match right here.
In fact, it looks like Lou is coming right at it.
We'll see the first reversal here set out by Cole.
And you're back sucked back by panic.
He got his three point nearfall there.
I thought he was going to stick him right there.
Oh, that's your look close for a while.
We're in live action again.
Manik leading 7 to 1 and putting the pressure on from the top against Wayne Cole, who's now out at 7 to 2 oh, I just appears to me that the call would not want to be tying up here.
And I'm sure that Lou maybe would be looking for that to get a off of it.
I think Cole probably is his best bet is shooting singles and doubles from a neutral without tying up there again.
Yeah that's difficult to say but I would I would think that tying up with Lou at this point with the physical power that he has, the throws he's capable of making, it could cause some problems for last year in the Nationals had a great match they had which really was one of the most exciting matches in NCAA tournament history somewhat.
People have been there a lot longer than we have been.
We're told these two boys, these two gentlemen, went after each other from the start.
It was 11 to 10, an easy takedown for Manik Takedown.
Right now, Manik is he's one of us toying with Wayne now off those takedowns.
It gets him on the mat, gets him under control.
Wayne's making the takedown pretty easy for him.
Got that power half on him right now.
Cole is going to have to get to his face.
He was worried that Warren was struggling or got to regain his base on the bottom and get moving.
Or one of Lewis guys just cranking right over here.
Well, on the other hand, Bannock on top got that power a half.
But he's got to get off the side the hold up with it.
So both boys were rather tentative in their action.
There.
It's 9 to 2.
Manik We're talking about that match they had last year.
There's the Iowa coaching staff that match last year.
Some people missed that because it was the last match of the day in the afternoon consolation session of the NCAA tournament and some of that power, he stands up, but the hands turn face it all comes around behind.
Grab one ball and he's quick to be sure There is a sit out maneuver by Coleman, the one man he kicks ahead.
Control of the arm now, takes another leg, comes around behind the two go.
But at this point, it looks like the best of Wayne is going to able to do in this match.
He's going to try to catch Lou on his back.
Right now, he's not wrestling aggressively and loose, carrying it to it.
You bet a minute.
20 to go in the second period, Iowa, 16 Iowa State, 50.
It's been a wonderful meet up to now.
And the heavyweight match is going all Lou Banks way so far got that near arm bar got left right tough chicken wing affair with it Referee cautions him to take not taking that arm too high.
All you see is he's not going to do a thing laying on his stomach.
He's got to regain his bases if he's going to put anything together at all.
Needless to say, Bionic has a little bit to do with that.
He's throwing on top and he's got control at heavyweight.
It's been Lou Banach and it's Iowa's glory here so far at about the same way.
14 the three rattlesnake count, the takedowns, five takedowns, a three point NEARFALL and an escape for Banach three escapes for Cole, it's 14 to 3.
And Lou, Banach has I'll tell you, you can measure his riding time with an hour hand.
How bout Wayne uses that long sit out and he submits himself to some possible back points again?
I Banach he's got that near arm bar a lot of pressure on the likewise on the far side a lot of pressure working behind the arms he's got Cole under control without question putting a lot of pressure on top I'm not certain but always on time.
Probably 215 to 20.
But he's making every bit of it felt in the bottom side.
And one up here, we're learning more play one morning.
Northwestern has a point.
I think it was just a warning on the bottom one point above with no warning for the top wrestler.
Oh oh, definitely out of three.
Now, what do we do here is less, Anderson.
I think that's the strategy.
Go Well, try, go, go, go.
He's got a lot of points to make up.
He's behind by 12, 13 car break down Cole.
That's what he did in the Nationals last year.
It's now 15 to 6.
That's what he should have started out doing in the first period of he expected to stay in this match ass and Lou Banach, all Lou has to do is win, that's all.
Well, all either man has to do is win because it's a one point lead.
But Cole is so far behind, he'd have to put Vanek on his back and.
He didn't going to do it.
He wasn't going to do it.
Being down as the way was in the second period, he has to take a few chances.
Yes, but at this point he's got to open up and try some things.
Whether he loses points or not, he's down.
And there's no tomorrow on this match.
It's Lou stands up, right, left, gets out from underneath, the weight is off, gets his one point escape at 16 to 6.
Cole has been warned for stalling penalized for stalling.
Paul managed to struggle away from a single leg takedown tries by just going off of this machine, weighed in on a double from a neutral without tying.
Lou gets him tied up.
He's going to score three so strong gets good position in the Zarco and it keeps the pressure on Cole's having trouble setting up when he's being pushed backwards all the time.
And at six and he's Lou Bennett unstable back up.
Mannix has meant a lot to Iowa wrestling, but a glorious for these for the Hawks and for Dan Gable and for these two brothers.
Now that we saw Eddie Manteca, one of his rare defeats tonight, you're not going to get to see Lewis the aggressor, without question here.
And Cole is behind.
And you're going to do that.
You've got to be the aggressor.
Well, and a takedown.
They give him a takedown.
Yes, he did.
Half of across the match, across the mat from us.
You couldn't see whether he was in or out.
18 to 6, I think.
Cole hard out.
I believe you're right and I'm not certain, But maybe he thinks this is all over.
But let me tell you to let the whistle sounds.
And in the period it's not over.
You go do the seven.
Lou back with his pressure has made this heavyweight match.
Oh, oh, oh.
Not quite what the cyclone fans hoped it would be.
He has taken it.
The call from the opening buzzer.
Ali, has Cole locked up if you want to do that.
I don't know.
I guess he does, but that's a nice takedown for I would 0.10.
There's no takedown there.
The 41st double the ground with about five or 8 seconds left in the match.
I was not sure whether that's what Lou wanted to do, but that's the way he does it.
He's he never the better.
And it's right at time.
19 seven, Lou Lobaton puts it away for the Hawkeyes.
How about that terrific heat again this year?
And it was 19 to 7 in that heavyweight match between Banach and Wayne Cole.
It certainly was not the match and it was the Nationals last year.
It was more like the two last season when Manic Pinnacle twice and with five points for the team because of a superior decision there, more than 11 points for difference.
Lou Burdick puts the Hawkeyes up 21 to 15 over the Cyclones, 21 to 15.
We're going to get a chance to talk with the I think with Dan Gable here with Chuck Pate in just a moment.
Quickly, there was a draw at £118.
Tim Riley and John Thorn.
Barry Davis beat Kevin Diakiese.
That's five times in a row for Barry over Kevin 6 to 2.
Kerber made it 9 to 2 with a major decision over Stuart Carter, 11 to 2.
Jeff looked good tonight.
Randy Conrad beat Bob Kaufman 5 to 1 on 142 for the Cyclones first win and then Nate Carr had a very big win over Jim Heffernan, freshman from the Buckeye Club 15 to 5 and that made it 9 to 9 at the first halfway mark.
But then Jim Zaleski got a four point major decision over Murray Cruz.
Boy, is he tough.
And then at 167, one of the two times that the cycling fans probably yelled almost, that was when Jim Lord beat Rico.
Jeff O'Reilly 10 to 6, made it 13 to 12.
And Dwayne Goldman then pulled up big upset for the well, he may not think so.
Very humble.
Let's go down to Chuck Patton and then come back and finish this up and just about.
He has Dan Gable with him, Coach talking to the coach.
All right out there, Chuck, this is a chance for us to meet Dan Gable, one of the great names in wrestling, Dan Gable.
Great win tonight.
Another one of the series Gone by.
What's your reflections on it right now?
I thought it was one of the hardest fought matches that I've been in, in a long time in terms of both guys just putting out effort.
I feel that the big match tonight was probably doing Goldman it for me at 177, really bringing along him.
You know, I've been Hummels a three time all-American.
That was really satisfying for me, you know, And I just felt that overall, both sides pretty much I was out there battling very hard.
I think the only young man that I was a little disappointed is by my 67 pounder, Rico.
I just felt that he gave Lord too many opportunities to score, turn his back a few times.
Stuff like that.
In a meet like this, you know, you got to stay on your opponent.
So I was a little there, but otherwise, you know, I, I think my kids fought hard.
Well, they did a real nice job.
I don't know if the meet was as you expected it to be, this close.
But in Iowa, I mean, anything can happen, can it?
Well, I think I expected it.
Really.
I just hope my kids wrestle as well as they're capable of doing.
But Iowa State had several undefeated guys on that squad, and each time we knock them off in the first one to knock them off in middle of January, that shows you that they've been wrestling in a lot of schools and they're tough at the same time.
Our kids put out a good effort tonight.
Well, he did a real nice job.
Congratulations, Dan.
Good luck to you the rest of the season.
Thank you, Chuck.
Let's get a couple of comments from you along the way.
I'd like to hear something about your reaction to this and our first time you joined us on this telecast.
Chuck Patton, former coach of United.
Well, there was an awful lot of fun.
We are.
I think I really appreciated it.
And it was a great opportunity for me to see some of the matches.
I've never been to an Iowa State duel before.
I think that there are some of the Iowa kids who started off a little tentative early in the matches, but they came on strong and really did a nice job.
I think that one of the things that you'll see is, is this opportunity is going to continue to improve.
The Iowa team will go.
We'll see a lot coming on.
Thank you, Chuck.
That's Chuck Patton.
And Dave Hardy has been here, too.
I was telling you about Goldman beating Hummel.
McMahon beat Ed Banach tonight on a thundering match, 12 to 8.
And then Lou Banach put it away, gave up all the hopes the Cyclones had.
It was 19 to 7.
And the final score, Iowa, 21, Iowa State 15.
We hope you enjoyed this and will join us again next time.
We have Iowa against Iowa State and February 15th.
And we'll be back on Iowa public television again on Tuesday night.
Also, that's our regular weekly slot.
And I'm Doug Brown for Dave Hardy and Chuck Patton, thank you for joining us.
