When Iowa and Iowa State meet on an map.
It's always a fierce emotional battle for supremacy.
And now it's the gut check time of the season.
A time to ratchet up the intensity for a run at the NCAA championship.
Iowa appears strong with seven ranked wrestlers.
They're looking to become NCAA champions for the 15th time under Dan Gable.
For Gable, this could be his last coaching visit to aim his last dual meet with the Hawkeyes.
Iowa State has three ranked wrestlers, and they're led by the top 177 pounder, Barry Weldon.
Coach Bobby Douglas and the Cyclones nearly upset number one, the Oklahoma State Cowboys two weeks ago.
And they would love to beat the Hawkeyes at Hilton Coliseum.
It's the battle for state bragging rights as the second ranked Iowa Hawkeyes take on the seventh ranked Iowa State cyclones next.
It's college wrestling from the Hilton Coliseum in Ames, Iowa.
Iowa Public Television Sports brings you a college wrestling rematch at the second ranked Iowa Hawkeyes because of their in-state rivals, but now ninth ranked Iowa State cyclones.
Hello, I'm Doug Brown with Tim Johnson.
Back in December, two months ago, we saw these teams at the beginning of our college wrestling series.
And now here we go again in a critical time of year.
What's the difference?
Well, I don't think much.
I was right back up there at the top, vying for their third national title in a row.
Iowa State's in the top ten, and they'd love to be right back there in the trophy hunt.
You know, this is the first time in five years and the first time since Bobby Douglas has been here that these teams have gone home at all.
And it's a thrill for him and all.
That's what he came to Iowa for.
Bobby Douglas came to get closer to the fire.
That meant come to Iowa State University, where wrestling is important.
And that also meant getting close to Dan Gable.
But could this fire, this part of the fire, be going out?
Dan Gable, a legend in his own time.
When you talk about people like that, you talk about Mickey Mantle, Muhammad Ali, Michael Jordan and Dan Gable.
Could this legend be ending his doomed career as a coach right here where he started it as a wrestler?
Well, a lot of people have come to Hilton Coliseum.
I think they want to be here.
If it's true, whether it's true or not, there are any number of wrestlers here who can win national titles coming up.
Well, three of them already have, but there are four.
For Iowa and Iowa State to really have a shot at it.
Mike, Minute 118, the last three years at all American.
He's at 126 this year he's ranked number two and he's already beaten his opponent tonight, Dwight Hanson.
Dwight Hanson ranked number three finish second last year.
And of course, now to get to the top, he's going to have to go through Mike Bennett.
And it could start tonight for him at 134.
The Hawkeyes have Mark Ironside, Mr.
Dominant, undefeated, ranked number one.
He's pinned half his opponents this year.
But to answer that, at 177 for Iowa State very well been right number one has beaten most of his competition this year one time or another.
He'd love to end the year at the top.
You know, when I when Iowa State got together, we always look for something interesting to happen.
And you say half an Iowa state beat Iowa.
Well, it's here at Hilton Coliseum and all the other reasons I could do it.
Well, upsets, of course, we talked about it would be huge if Sanderson could beat Whitmer at 118.
But I don't think upsets the key.
I think the the toss up matches are there are four of them, 120, 640, 267 and heavyweight.
If Iowa State could win all of those, they'd be looking pretty good.
Possible?
Yes.
Probable?
Probably not.
I will find out.
It's going to be a lot of fun.
It's going to be a lot of fun with Iowa State and Iowa here in Hilton Coliseum right now, the lineups tonight are going to be pretty much as we have expected them to be.
Sanderson will be going at 118 for Iowa State Later on.
We'll have the possibility of a couple of toss up chances.
And Ben Newkirk, for instance, has been waiting for Iowa at 142.
And that's a possibility that he might replace Casey Phillips.
We'll have to wait and see there.
But other than that, they are pretty much took it £177 to four.
Iowa Got it.
Looks like it's what you might expect.
There's one more against Sanders and that was the rankings behind the three Mac already will not be here as we didn't expect him to be and he will not be there stadium for the tournament and the other way to do the first one Weber and Hoover all the way down.
But first one might very likely be the candidate for Goldman very well Oh we'll food it's Iowa and a Tyler State.
Yeah well there they are, the NCAA title banners for Iowa State and they've had their share of them.
Bobby Douglas said the situation is similar to the season's first Iowa State Iowa wrestling meet in December, as we said.
And that means that Iowa, probably the favorite, but Iowa State knocking at the door.
It's exciting.
The crowd is big tonight and it's really an electric atmosphere, which it should be.
People are anticipating that.
Will this be Dan Gable's last duel as a head coach?
The series, of course, is a little lopsided on the Iowa side.
41 wins, 14 losses and a few ties.
But there's a man I remember very well, Tam, I was going to say when this started up again back in 1973, here's Jim Ramirez, the referee from our Kansas City, Kansas.
He's doing the coin flip to see who will get the choice and determine where the whether you take Otto or even when the flip of the coin at the end of the first period comes to choose up or down or on your feet.
So it says that Iowa wins the flip and we'll see what that means.
That means their man at 118 will get the choice.
He could even defer on it, of course, later on.
There's Dan Gable many ways, wherever he goes, if he doesn't hang it up after this year, you will see him as the man of the hour next year because people want to be there when something important happens.
We have a couple of top brands of his assistant and he's in there, too.
Jim Zaleski.
In fact, you're talking about Tom and Terry right now, Tom and Terry Brands.
Tom Brands, the Olympic champion, 1996.
And they're giving them a little recognition right now in front of the Iowa State crowd because he's an Iowa boy, Shelden, Iowa, with the Olympic team, big rivals.
But they're a lot of respect.
And it's the same sport for everybody.
It is, as we say, a very important event when Iowa and Iowa State get together.
But there are a lot of high school people here to watch.
Tom, three time national champion for the Hawkeyes, Tom Brands, what a record.
And he's getting a well-deserved standing ovation from people here in the Hilton Coliseum, homes of his and his arch rival teams, the Hilton Coliseum in Ames, Iowa, or Iowa and Iowa State are getting together.
Of course, Terry Brands won the national title twice.
And so between the brands Brothers, five of them, and Jim's Alaska, you see they're shaking hands with the 118 pounder.
Jesse Witmer comes in just up the road, by the way, an eagle rose.
He is going against Cody Sanderson.
They met earlier in the year, and Jesse Whitmer beat Cody Sanderson 17 to 8 in a major decision.
But Bobby Douglas believes that the young Utah freshman Cody Sanderson from Heber, Utah, is much better now.
Well, Jesse Whitmer is two.
He's ranked number five for Iowa in the black 50 or senior Jesse Whitmer against Corey Sanders, Cody Sanderson.
And if Iowa State has prospects against Iowa, they have to start early.
They have to absolutely start early.
But one of the things that they don't want to do is get in a position where Cody Sanderson gives up a major thing like that.
Being competitive right here will really spur the Iowa State cyclones on.
But I'll tell you what, you made a great point Doug Whitmer's just got.
He just got better all year long.
You see how strong he is and he is working that headlock really well.
Here he comes around.
Look at him.
He doesn't have a chance.
Yes, he does.
Now, Jim Romero's, the referee calls it, and I will take a up two to nothing lead.
At £118, Jesse Whitmer gets the first takedown over Cody Sanderson.
Are you set?
Well, Whitmer was able to use that front headlock and run around, and he's so tough up there.
Last time, Whitmer picked up four points for the Hawkeyes with a 17 eight victory, as you said, and Whitmer ranked fifth as last.
Only two wrestlers ranked in the top three.
So he's right up there.
Let's go, gentlemen.
Open it up again to controlling that front headlock right there, putting a head down and running around, putting the legs in and gets the leg in.
And he's 4 to 1 up now and he's making it look easy.
Well, he's having his way.
He is having his way.
Jesse Whitmer has really been an Iowa wrestler who has improved in leaps and bounds over the years, well over five years.
And now this is a senior year.
He's getting that big chance down, but he's getting a shot.
He's behind Mike McKenna for the last several years, the last three years where Mike Menno was an all-American.
And Jesse Whitmer has an opportunity to come right in here and maybe win a national title at 118 or finish real high.
And he's looking like he's in in form for it all these two teams.
This is one of those occasions when the two men who met the first in the first meet have a chance to test each other.
How far have they come in that period of time?
Are you set, Travis 4 to 1 Lead for what?
Rose Staying on top long enough to try to get some riding time.
He has 35 seconds off and counting.
Right.
Fred What Sanderson needs to do is get it out, get his hips underneath him, get good hand control and get out for one.
And then it would be huge if he could get back.
He didn't get a takedown.
Took too slow.
This little train that is chugging along at a pretty good rate called Jesse Whitmer, 39 seconds of riding time.
Look at this Underhook to the trip can behind.
But the whistle keeps Sanderson away from getting taken down again.
But Jesse Whitmer's mind is on top of this one, too.
He has Now it looks as if he's actually forced Sanderson to believe it.
He is dominant.
And so Cody Sanderson is going to have to think some needs offense.
Yeah, he needs to think offense.
He needs to say, How am I going to get a shot if I'm going to create an angle?
I got to get there and I got to make the shot.
I can't stand around because that's what Whitmer will take advantage.
He'll underhook, he'll over hook, He'll control my head.
No shot yet by Sanderson.
First periods are 3 minutes long, as you know where you have gone through all but a half a minute of his first three minute period warning by Jim Ramirez against 12th man or inactivity.
First time as a warning.
Second time would be a point for the opponent.
4 to 2 in favor of the man in black, Jesse Whitmer in the first period.
It's hard to figure how Whitmer, anyway, could get called for stalling there.
As much activity as he's had in the first set trip.
Again, 6 to 2 right there.
Jasper Whitmer looking tough.
There's the Iowa State bench, Bobby Douglas on the right, Tom Ortiz in the center match.
No, but their man is having a tough time here at 18.
Well, major decisions not only help the team point wise, but they help him psychologically.
And there's a little too little too late to try to get it off and 6 to 2.
So now at the end of the period, 50 to 60, Whitmer Underhook right there.
Look at that to trip.
And then he just drives through the hips and gets it two points down.
Boy knows right where Sanderson's hips are, and he goes.
After the chance went to Whitmer, he deferred.
Sanderson chooses down Sanderson underneath opportunity to get a point on the board for Sanderson here.
But he needs to be a little more explosive than that.
Whitmer decides to let him go.
I've taken him down three times.
There's a shot.
Whitmer stops him right on the first line of defense right there, the arms, and gets the underhook as it comes back into again in that position again.
In fact, he's got Sanderson backing up.
There's a headlock by Sanderson.
Out of bounds.
Out of a big chance.
I'll tell you right now.
Go big.
That was very fortunate for Jessi Whitmer, but they weren't on in the middle of the match.
Yes, because he got out, he dodged a bullet.
You know, that's just two points.
Takedown set, boom up.
So talk about huge.
That's what you talk about right down on range, 6 to 5, a takedown and a headlock.
But it could have been a whole lot worse.
But it's what he needed.
It's what Sanderson needed that mattered.
I mean, now here's here's Sanderson trying to get the crowd into it now by ten one telling his man if he can.
And you know, when we've seen Whitmer wrestle, he started fast a couple of times and faded a little bit against Take more from Oklahoma State.
And he's a little vulnerable right here.
So Whitmer now needs to explode and get out.
He needs to come up, get his hips underneath him, Nathan, and get up right in time is 35 seconds for Whitmer.
That's Bobby Douglas telling his man, Cody Sanderson, Win £118.
That's Iowa City, Iowa against Iowa State.
Milton Coliseum.
Hey, say on Iowa Public Television to Tim Johnson.
I'm Doug Brown.
The home and Home series has been reinstated.
We saw them in December.
Here we are just before tournament.
Time to find out where there's two teams that second period and only about a minute left in the second period.
Well, Sanderson now doing a pretty good job on top.
He got a tight waist.
They're looking for the near rest and he's back on the ankle right there looking for an ARMBAR.
Something had lever, but he's doing a good job now.
He's he's putting whitmer's hips down on the ground.
Now he can go to work.
This is has been one of Jesse's weaknesses over the years.
He has been a little bit problematic on the bottom and Sanderson has taken advantage of it here for the time being.
Now he's building right in time.
He has one second to second.
There's a point that ties it.
That was a penalty against Whitmer, which ties the score six, four, six, and now the crowd is out there.
And we talked about how big a win for Iowa State at 118 would be.
And now we're looking at a tie match.
No riding time.
Whitmer had three takedowns in the first period, but as soon as Sanderson got that headlock, things changed.
Right now, Whitmer's out takes the lead 7 to 6 with how much time left?
25 seconds to go in the second period.
The question is, is, is Jesse Whitmer tired?
We're going to see right here because he had his way in the first period.
Right now, freshman Cody Sanderson, who has six falls this year, as you can see with that headlock of his, is he's dangerous.
Jesse Whitmer is lost only four out of 20.
And don't think that's not on Jesse Whitmer's mind.
That's 7 to 6 in favor of Whitmer.
And Whitmer will be in a down position starting now.
That's not.
He chose to stay up.
He didn't want to go underneath.
He didn't like to being under there.
That's his weakness.
So we're going to start on the feet.
And here comes Sanderson in on the left in.
And he's got a tight one right here.
All he has to do is cut off Now.
Whitmer He's got to hold it tight until Jim Ramirez calls it stalemate right here.
But he's going to give him a few seconds that he is squeezing through here.
No points yet.
He's coming around.
This is one that Iowa State doesn't want to be called a stalemate right here.
He's pushing through.
Jesse Whitmer is hanging on tight, but Ramirez is giving Sanderson the time to do it.
Oh, he can do.
Sanderson takes the lead for the first time on a takedown.
Iowa State's Sanderson now leads 8 to 7 over Whitmer.
I'll tell you.
And I'll tell you where.
Sanderson is tough.
He's got a tight waist that is squeezing the daylights out of Whitmer right now.
He's just squeezing him tight.
Iowa State against Ohio.
Whitmer wants to get off the mat and get a fresh start, and he's out with 15 seconds to go.
In the third period, a one point lead for Sanderson.
He's only 10 seconds away from right in time here, watch this.
Final 22 passed over right here.
50 seconds to go.
You're right.
In the 40 seconds away from riding time does a nice job of persistence on that takedown by Sanderson.
Again, remember that Sanderson has been warned as well as right as Whitmer.
He rides him and he's only 6 seconds away from writing time.
Bobby Douglas serves the Iowa bench.
This is a huge 6 seconds.
If Whitmer could get out for Iowa, this was not considered one of the toss ups.
It was a major decision for winter.
The first time they matched Sanderson down 6 to 2 is now up to seven.
30 seconds to go.
Oh, that's the one he just warned Iowa State and gave Whitmer one.
Now, the sense the scenario is Sanderson come right out to the win.
Do you say?
And if he has run again and if Whitmer gets out, it's overtime.
It Sanderson right out.
It's a win for Iowa State.
Whitmer gets out, it's over.
It's overtime.
So Sanderson goes at it again.
Whitmer gets to his feet, and he's out 9 to 8 in favor of the Hawkeyes with 16 seconds.
But he's really tied up it.
So whoever gets a takedown now or later, if nobody gets a takedown, it's overtime.
Unless there's a penalty.
Of course, if anybody gets called headlock again, he has looked very, very, very freshman mistake.
Big mistake for big mistake.
I didn't do it.
Big mistake for Sanders.
Big mistake.
It.
Wow.
That term he tried a big move.
Wow.
And lost it with 2 seconds to go.
And is he upset?
Jesse Whitmer dodges a bullet.
Boy, he did the right in time, went to Sanderson, and it's now 11 to 9.
Is the score the final score, a two point victory for Jesse Whitmer and £118.
Iowa goes up three to nothing.
Why the little things make a difference.
That man.
I'll tell you what.
Look at this.
I. I mean, you know, what he was thinking was maybe Whitmer was coming in for the takedown, and he just had to do something.
But really, what you do, right, there's there's a reaction for him.
Dan Gable says, keep him down.
You just won the match.
Now that's the next one.
There's Dan Gable.
This next one is a big one from whichever whatever point of view you want to look at, This is a toss up.
And Iowa, Iowa State, particularly after having lost that one, No needs to win the toss ups, as you said, Tim, But this is also more than that.
They're the top three in this country have all sort of beating each other.
Man has beaten Henson before.
Henson has beaten Guerrero, Guerrero has beaten Lana.
That's right.
One, two and three.
And they've all beaten each other.
They all have an opportunity to win an NCAA title.
Mike Matta was a fifth year senior up at 26 this year.
I don't know about you, Tim, but I think he's chances of a national title are better at 126.
It's just as well I think just as good as they were at 119.
He had three tries at 118.
He's a he's a he's husky and he's tough, tough wrestler.
And he can do it at a 126 just as easily as at 118.
And maybe, like you said, he's got a better shot.
I remember earlier in the year when Dan Gable said he thinks that man attempts to lose his strength a little bit when he's cutting weight a lot in the national tournament.
He's not having to do that this year.
Dwight himself looked good and beating Guerrero.
He's ranked number three right now.
He's only lost four times this year.
Exeter once did that double overtime, you know, once in a major decision to Ironside when he was up at 134.
You know, Tiger, of course, meant twice to Penn State's.
O'HARA Of course, in their first match, men escaped in the tiebreaker to win 2 to 1 over Hanson in the first duel, Hanson from Eisenhower High School in Lawton, Oklahoma.
He's a junior.
All right, let's go to Mike Hanna from Rock Falls, Illinois, is a senior fifth year senior in the black line.
What a what a turn of events at 118 after being behind 62, I was going to say, yeah, that's a big thing to think about because it looked like Whitmer was rolling to make a decision.
And as soon as the headlock came down, if not.
Whitmer, there's a double warning against these man again.
Well, you see a trend with Jim Ramirez, the official.
He doesn't fool around and and doesn't talk all that much to him, which I think is good, but he lets them be hanging out.
That's right.
Right.
Say, Anderson, Oh, that was a nice single.
And he turns it to a double.
He gets a takedown and he got it right.
Then he got right back to the scene again.
But just for that moment, it was on the mat and it's two to nothing.
Hanson Back there in the one single leg.
Now watch.
He doubles up right there and drives through the hips for the two points.
So men are lined up in the down position.
We have half the first period gone, a minute and a half each man has been warned for inactivity, good hand control, good hips.
Oh, look at this.
Came right back around the ground.
Now they're going out.
They're out.
This one.
Just one.
Nice move by Matta.
That's right.
He not he wasn't satisfied with the escape.
He was going to turn it on reversal down.
So 2 to 1 in favor of the man in the red, in the blue there, some light pants on.
Both these young men more active than than they're known to be in this first 2 minutes.
Well, I think Jim Ramirez is making sure that he's a veteran and NCAA referee work for me from Kansas.
You see him at the National Duals, the NCAA tournaments, the big tournaments.
He's refereeing this Iowa State.
Even there again is is Hinson in on that left And oh, look, let's see what he does He's driving in Hanson got away and got away.
He got it on the leg that time a minute was able to get out of it.
Usually, Hinson does not go with the leg first, even though it was upper body.
And one of the reasons that he sometimes doesn't get a lot of activity is because he can't find that against a man like that.
But he's taken that leg twice and scored once.
Well, you can tell Bobby Douglas been working with him, telling him were his best opportunities to win are and that's it's an individual thing Russell One way against men another way against Guerrero Mike Matter of Iowa.
Dwight Hansen of Iowa State.
Guys Iowa leads three to nothing after a win by Jesse Whitmer in a barnburner at £118.
It's going to show you what happens for the first time that they met.
This was in Iowa City, and this is what won it in the overtime minute.
Escaped here in the tiebreaker, the 32nd ride or escape there.
And yet there he goes and it's over.
And that was it.
After note, there were no takedowns in that first meet and first match, right?
It was 2 to 1.
And now we've had a takedown here and somebody moved too fast.
That was Hansen on the bottom.
Let's go get set for this starting the second period.
HANSEN The man on the bottom leads by one.
He had a takedown early in the first period, but halfway through the first period, you know, I think last year, maybe the beginning of this year, people would have said that Hansen has strength, speed on men.
I don't think so.
I think they both have a lot of strength and they both have a lot of speed.
So, you know, you're talking about two that body styles, quickness, wrestling abilities.
They're close, very evenly matched.
Well, they haven't had one point or two apart, probably in the two matches this year.
There's no doubt about it.
The biggest lead anybody ever had this year was one.
Hansen took it on his head to to nothing.
Early period.
Men are very tough on top.
He's riding loose and trying to get to his feet.
And does does he have hand control up there now?
That's the question.
Well, that's and that's a good point.
You make good.
Your men are good.
Tough rider.
First thing that Hansen has to be concerned about is getting his hips underneath him and he hand control itself.
Jim Zaleski thinking the same thing as far as men.
He's just got to beat Hansen to to the punch right there and keep right in him like that.
And Zaleski will be happy.
As we said, the number one man right now is Guerrero.
Oklahoma State matter has lost Alan Hansen.
Beat him, now hits in his hands right there.
He's got two hands now.
If he can just pop his hips away, that hurt is the one point for stalling against Iowa and one point escape.
One point for stalling against Iowa before the escape and then the escape.
And a scoreboard doesn't show it.
All right.
Does now for two on.
So right before the escape, Ramirez hit Medina with another stalling.
Remember, they were both warned in the first period.
So that's one point against him for Iowa State.
And then 2 seconds later, the escape for one more point.
This is one of those toss ups you were talking about, Tim.
And the first time this year Menno won it.
Hansen leads by three and a lot different match.
It was one one last time, two escapes.
The only thing now we have a takedown and a penalty point in favor of Dwight Hansen.
You don't give Dwight Hansen a three point lead and win very often.
But again, he has to keep wrestling.
He doesn't dare sit on that three point lead.
Here's Matt trying to get Tyler collar control under a hook, get what he wants matter much happening right now don't already matter has been penalized warned and penalized.
Let's go referee Jim Ramirez.
Look, I'm over.
He's going to call somebody here pretty well.
And I don't know who it would be.
No man should be able to take advantage of Hansen probably thinking about and there was thinking about Hansen sitting on it, but I didn't see much of a shot there to take advantage of that.
So this time then I will start.
He's going to start in the bottom.
He like to get that escape point and then work from there.
I just said 25 seconds writing time advantage for Matt.
By the way, when the time why Hansen was, as you see there, close last year, but no cigar, he was second to Sheldon Thomas.
You want to show A.B.
also, maybe I should ask Thomas, who's ranked 118.
Well, he's a big 18 pounder.
Go out there, I ask you, I tend to confuse facts once in a while for two to read in favor of.
There is a shot, but man is in.
Look at that microphone found.
He found that leg.
He went after it.
Now he's just got to finish it.
Remember, he was in a lot last week against John Ford from Arizona State.
Never got that takedown there.
He didn't have a good shot, good execution.
And it's now tied at 21 to go in the second period.
There's the takedown right there.
And there is a young man that just made up a three point deficit against Hansen, who is not easy to do that.
Now it comes down to Hansen getting out and who wanted to take down Daryn.
Amana on top has 20 seconds of riding time.
The end of the match if one man has a minute or more, right lot time, he gets an extra point.
We know that Hansen is not going to be able to sit on this right now because of cameras won't let him and neither will minute.
So the key right here is Hansen.
Knowing that he has to score to win 5 to 4 in favor of Hansen.
The last takedown went to man on the first one early in the first period, went to Hansen, and people might want to look.
What do you mean?
He has a score to win.
He's up by one.
It will not hold up.
Now, whether it's stalling or a score by men, it won't hold up.
Hansen needs to score takedown to win this match.
Good crowd.
So for the rematch between Iowa and Iowa State, Hawkeyes three, two each.
Man Six, five.
Each man is penalized for stalling.
That's one thing Hansen has done is going back to upper body again.
So it's a natural trait, and I didn't expect to get hit for stalling here.
And so the five four didn't hold up there.
It goes well in low, but he couldn't keep it.
And Hitchens did a good job of pushing it to the outside, and he's going to win this match.
We have 2 seconds to go and a score of six two, five.
And it does appear that Hansen is going to win in green caution against that because he moved too fast at eight up a second move and nobody can.
The person we're talking about went to Iowa State first time 6254 good match, good match by both wrestlers.
We got takedowns involved here.
Both ones went off and figure it out.
Just to say that hits it off the rack perfectly.
Poke around.
It's great.
It's a tight three.
Anybody could beat anybody right there with the hits.
And this time is right happy.
Nobody.
There's no doubt who's ranked 34.
You're going to see him next.
His name is Mark.
So his opponent will be Frank Kingsley, who is a young freshman from Osage.
He was one of the ten fall victims of Ironside, and their first dummy, Ironside is Russell, 20 matches this year, one of all Penn Township people up against, and Frank Kingsley, starting off in his freshman year, goes right up against the number one man in the country, three, three Iowa and Iowa State strike.
I said it.
Ironside, one of his pin victims, was Kiss Lee and the last duel, Meet Ironsides, never lost to a cyclone.
He's four now.
He's a junior and he's never lost to a cyclone.
This tough front headlock brings Kingsley down.
Try to post the hat and come around to the right on the edge of the mat.
Sometimes you have weights.
So you say like I was ranked number one.
Well, that could be anybody.
One of two or three people, 134.
There's only one number one right now, and that's Mark Ironside.
He's been that dominant at Hilton Coliseum, the first match, 218.
Why that looked like a walk away for Whitmer.
Then it looked like Sanderson was going to win it.
And Whitmer won him at the end.
And you'd have to say the gain went to Iowa State by taking a four point decision in the last duel to a three point decision, even though it was very, very disappointing to not win when they thought they had an opportunity to at least go overtime once.
Right.
That's a warning against wrestling back in a way.
Actually, I was nice shot and takedown by Ironside shot in on that single came around for the two points two point takedown for Iowa up to nothing.
The Hawks won the first two matches.
The first three matches.
In fact, the last time they met in Iowa City, they split on this time.
Open up, gentlemen.
Ironside on Top against Kissing.
And you can imagine just in a situation like this, a freshman against a number one ranked man who's pinned as many people as he has.
He's going to be very careful in there, but was warned for inactivity.
Jim Ramirez is the whistle man out there.
You keep an eye on the situation, the call to go is a tough situation right here.
Ironside.
So tough.
And look how confident he is.
He stepped right out over the head to head and he's looking to thread right through.
He's he's got the one hand in there watching.
He's going to drive that hand through and thread through if he can right there.
Boy, powerful guy has that bomb working right and the head trapped.
But Kessler did not go on his back.
You know what I've seen so far with these two?
You know, Ramirez has been quick to not let people stall.
But both both teams are wrestling hard.
I think they both appreciate this.
I think both coaches would like it this way as far as let's just have a lot of action late in the year.
It's time to be at the top of your game.
One other thing that Jim Harris is doing to it in those situations where he sees a real prospect for somebody to finish a move, he let him go.
SANDERS For instance, £218.
And that what could have been a stalemate for some people.
Here's Ironside.
And again, on the higher leg, the crotch situation against Kessler leading 2 to 1 got no caso over.
He's going to cut off right here in the four two.
He's got it all the way borderline Taylor up the hog.
Ramirez doesn't think he is there now and that's the end of the three minute first period.
Here's the first takedown.
Low single right there, drives around, catches the vehicle on the other leg, comes up.
You set coverage how it all started for inside back Ironside takes the bottom position by choice in the second period, gets out right away and goes up 5 to 1, 5 to 1 in Hilton Coliseum Ironside against freshman Frank Kingsley from Osage.
He didn't expect to have to be in there this year.
One of the Iowa State wrestlers who would probably would figure it out, I think, by Bobby Douglas to be on 134, not with the team.
And so Frank Kessler, he suddenly finds himself the man.
He's a man as a freshman.
And all it's going to do is it's maybe not going to give him a lot of wins this year, but he's going to it's going to toughen him for the years ahead.
I found seven online after that takedown.
That's up one 7 to 2 after the escape shot.
You won't forget wrestling people like Ironside either.
And when he's doing this to other opponents in two or three years, just it made the shot.
But Ironside cut it off from the Underhook right away.
So just control in the head right there and run around.
He stuff the head, post it and run around.
Still in control.
GREENE You're still in control there.
Nine three After the Escape.
Three Fred Ironside always coming at you.
But he's got to look back.
He comes underneath.
Looks good, though, the lack of point so far.
And that could loom big in the points right?
Right, right.
He gets a technical falling, needs a near-fall to get the fight to make five instead of four.
Technical fall comes if you beat your opponent by 15 points, but you have to have a near fall in there to get that extra point, making it five.
Otherwise it's just four.
And Kissling knows that you can be sure.
1615 seconds to go.
I don't.
There's a warning against kissing that's should be a penalty makes it 12 three to take down 314 to 3 an 11 point lead after the takedown.
This is real important right here.
You know that Ironside understands he's looking for some kind of tilt situation.
Last time again, it was a pin for Ironside over Kingsley.
And you'd have to say that anything less than that happens, it would go for Iowa State.
Here's A reminder that after 153 matches, we'll bring you a preview of that unique program, a conversation with Dan Gable that we'll be showing you after this meet is over.
So look for that.
Just a little preview of the fine program.
Third period score is 14 to 4.
A lot of riding time over 2 minutes.
He's looking, you see there with the nearest right there, he's trying to turn Kingsley over.
He's got a lot of pressure.
He's doing all he can on top to turn Kissling over.
It's pretty tough to turn somebody over when all they're there for is to not get turned over.
And that's that's the way it is.
Ten point lead, lots of riding time.
Of course, Ryan's out.
He's.
He's piling it up.
You know, you could call Kessler for stalling right here.
But as far as Einstein is concerned, he's got to find something else.
He's got to look for something else, because the issue here, Rick, was all right, there's a penalty again.
Now, the next time that's going to be two points, 15 to 4, 11 point lead.
Again, the issue here is back points.
And then Ironside wants to turn him.
Got the arm bar far rest to fast break teams dance three three after 2 minutes out there How bout and look at Ironside thinking well maybe I can throw it to his back from my feet 315 to 5 after the escape shot will keep Ramirez off Kissling now probably for the rest of the match.
But what's important is the next one's to, and the next one is disqualification.
He's not going to get dinged twice in the next 30 seconds.
17.
The SEC's an 11 point lead.
And guess Lee again took the shot.
Kessler doing everything that the coaching staff from Iowa State do expecting to do.
That's pretty frustrating for Ironside.
He's so dominant they're not getting the back points that he needed for five points.
And Iowa State effectively picks up to here from the last duel me because it was a pin the last time and it looks like that's where I am.
It is a major decision, a major decision with riding time 22 six for Mark Ironside and it puts Iowa up 7 to 3 after three matches.
Number one ranked Mark Armstrong.
Now here comes a good match, 142 top ranked people, but their second edging gets their third point score for anybody else.
It's just as big as any other match, maybe the biggest weight of the night.
We know that Lee Weber, Bent Euchre had it in, but I think this is Casey Jealous.
It is.
So this is a rematch of the first time and last year Casey GROSS beat Maldonado as a freshman when he was in his redshirt year.
And the first time they met in the dual meet Maldonado beat Gillies three, two, two, two.
Both of them proved both are good wrestlers.
Girls from Century High School in Bismarck, North Dakota.
Maldonado, a sophomore from East Chicago Central in Hammond, Indiana.
His coach was very compelling.
Bill Kelly, who was a national champion at Iowa State.
Logan Maldonado is the pin leader for Iowa State, has eight pins already.
And as we've seen, Gillis is a big move man as well.
So here we go.
Sometimes living in darkness where there's a lot of for a takedown, two to nothing in favor of Maldonado and that boy that was Ram tough there.
Boy I think that happened right right, right Can't walk time out injury Maldonado's got cracked in the face there somehow that meant by ram tough I mean look at this Here we go.
No I don't I didn't see happen there because that is the first time out.
Fred.
I don't know where it happened.
It must have happened in that flurry right there.
Back on the feet again, 2 to 1 after the escape, Maldonado of Iowa State leads by one, and he has the Underhook position right here, but he always has the length there.
And he can use that body.
He knows how to throw with that over hook as well, so forth.
This is really interesting, Miles.
Of course, as we said, Bill Shorten die by the sword once in a while.
You he gets himself in hot water once in a while with his brave out activities out there.
But he has won three big falls and 24 victories this year.
Both wrestlers very much improved over the beginning of the year and done everything their coaches could expect.
A warning against violence and Maldonado up to the center.
Look at that oh seven Iowa State, three After three matches, the Iowa State winner was Henson over man a 65 at £126 The closer Ronnie Whitmer won.
And Mark Armstrong got a major decision time difference right now 7 to 3.
When you get to 150, you will not see Lincoln McElroy.
Maybe you will see last year's national champion Chris Paul start.
Koval No, see, here's the Underhook position.
Give us as they put on pressure, I'd say, come on, not as putting just a little more pressure on Gillis than Gillis and on the Iowa State wrestle both underclassmen and is covered by Madison Smith.
And that is great to see up by his back.
Now we're going to see where they go and come back and just watch the feet.
Yes, out of bounds and back in the step.
But go 3 to 2 in favor of Gillis.
And I don't know.
It was blown also before the bell there.
Oh, nice.
Going up and sucking right back to his back.
These are strong reservations.
So she didn't look awfully good on top.
Yes, yes, yes.
Well, Anna has the head of the head pin.
Feels right there on the box.
It was his got down in there tight.
He's holding up there.
And that's not because Maldonado wants it there.
Yes.
So this is an exciting match, I'll tell you right now.
That's a car to handle right now.
He's going to take him down to the mask when the time runs out.
It two points reversal.
Well, actually, stay in this third and final state.
Yes.
The escape and a takedown.
That's where it felt like election time and a reversal round.
So the 20 point situation there for Maldonado, he starts on the bottom to gain the second period leading by two.
Now here's Gill is trying to get the legs in he get let's go 6 to 3 for Maldonado 7 to 3 meet score Iowa ahead of Iowa State after three matches.
This is the second toss up we talked about Iowa state one, the first one I really got any chance I was over rossum's Nick here they are going in circles where you go and you have to get out, have a shower over your asses.
We've seen a number of roommates.
Their shape is good.
You know you're going for the last part of the match.
They tend to be strong.
Strong as they are in the early part of the match.
Guys doing good for sure.
And that's a credit to Bobby Douglas and his staff because, you know, you wrestle Iowa, you have to be worked hard.
Those are the edge points for us against Iowa State to keep track of those four.
Yeah Iowa public television coverage of Iowa and Iowa State Tim Johnson uncrowned will take it from here.
It was just a very good recovery by Gillis It's up there on his back us to the text messages showing a lot of activity in the last couple of seconds we've seen Gillis come on strong and lean against John Boehner against Illinois and Maldonado his face in your face right to the end, 25, about 30 seconds to go here.
It was three or nine points to start one point to Iowa State right now.
And he could get to picked up his hustle off on the edge of the map here right now and take it down.
Oh, not a one come up.
Doesn't happen.
He called that stalling Ryan for the shot McCarthy one second running time for shy Iowa wrestler Gillis.
He has the rumble right time.
There is a shot.
That's his choice and takes the bottom position.
Each man has not had a takedown.
All of us had two, and each man likes to be on top.
Even though his body style to the defense, he loves to be in with the legs, he likes to put the legs on and crank and he's dangerous on top.
If he uses it, it feels like his coach, Bill Kelly, did some heel killing, won the national championship by pinning Brad Penrith with it with the cradle.
Yep.
And that burns back to the coach.
Okay, Bloody nose here for Maldonado.
That means we have to stop for clean up here.
Jim sends back to his bench 7 to 3 lead.
We have a minute and a half to go and.
A three.
But here's what you think about when you think about Dan Gable and Bobby Douglas.
What have they ever done?
All right.
I mean, it's only one of those things in a lifetime.
And that's incredible.
Robby Douglas has been the captain of the 1968 and 19,000 coaching, arguably the two best coaches in the history of the sport.
The 73 year old leads Gillis of Iowa at £140.
I only seen Score 73.
And thanks to a major decision by my motto, Get the hips down and kill us like that scheme.
He's got the risk trap and he's looking for a tilt right now.
He's got to travel.
He's got to stay close to the up.
What Gilson has to do is get it up, Turn bass.
Interesting flat right there.
We'll see what the Americans are up there.
Oh, exquisite.
Gilks gets it.
He needs to get the hips on 773 we've got.
But but again, anytime you have that, you're going to stop it.
More great television coming up after the match.
Of course, a conversation got Dan Gable right that we followed and the Iowa press reporters will discuss what's going on in the legislature.
Nature will feature wild elephant trainer Jane Marin will continue her investigation.
But the dam game is the big thing tonight at 7:00.
That's 7:00 to start the evening up right after the president here right now starts his off the whistle real strong tonight where he's got the near risk.
He's looking strong.
Look at him.
Pull in there.
He's put a lot of pressure on Gillis and really looking like he's taking control of this matchup when he comes out tomorrow has not been worn out.
You're less likely to see him get you right here.
That's what he's thinking right now.
He's 36.
Any risk?
He does not have to take any risks.
But really, that's.
No, he's not.
But give us a reason to either.
Well, it was Forstall.
That's a lot of pressure on top of him.
To his credit, he's putting on case this would bring a state of the and sentenced to 150 where Bono allowed state to be taken as Bono three person Michael Brady is recovering from an assault for now and oh eight extra points oh for a double murder after the legal limit first time he would have been out of Iowa in the middle of the meet for quite a while.
Finishing the double leg gets his head to the outside, picks his opponent Eric Coble down to the mat.
Last week, we had an opportunity to talk with Lincoln McElroy, who probably is taking the replacement, replacing in the lineup and says that Cole was really a hard working young man.
I guess it is all just a little short, obviously, of the talent that Chris Bowen always wanted to tell Caldwell.
He is trying to get that back points early, So build up that lead with the back point.
Yes to it.
I think he's had the ride for 35 seconds around that coming into right now two time NCAA champion, one time runner up and looking for his third national championship this year.
That's why not only have no blood in this match, too and I think this is this is Coble who has a bloody nose.
And so out comes the Iowa trainer and we'll have a little time out.
There's Lincoln McElroy, very close up right there, of course.
MACRURY Be one of the best ever to put on a uniform at 185.
And you can see the problem is the cut on the outside and also get a reminder of halftime.
We'll have a conversation about cable after this.
Meet just a preview of some of the highlights of what we will see later on at 7:00 after the meet's over.
Also talk about what's going on in our schedule during state tournament times coming up here.
So Iowa Public television will tell you how well the scores got made in the first half of this.
Meet Bono, let's go.
Wants to go back down on the field again.
Two, two, one.
No, three minute first period is one third gone.
The better Bono of Iowa State's.
The hard push to name a wrestler who has come any further than this man has in his time from walking onto the campus at Iowa State last year when he won the national title, The front Headlock right here.
He's going to oh, they're going to short drag around to the hips.
He's got to take him down, got nothing, got nothing pulling in.
And it does a strong count.
All right.
Quarter leads the ball on.
How close is he, the riding time?
Well, he has 41 seconds.
He's going to he feels he can get that international start.
He has to do a signal to the referee, let the man know he's going to do that and go for two to Eric Coble, Cedar Falls High School right there, 22 years old.
He's wrestling some good people this year, filling in for Lincoln already.
Yes, he has.
He started there.
He's got in there and fight valiantly.
And you out.
This does not 6 to 2 now favor opponent Bono has lost two times this year both times to Mack already once in the duel 81721 in the finals of the Midlands.
But he's beaten everybody else.
Number three is McClure of Michigan, and he's beaten him three times last time in the coaches, national coaches, all star 623.
Now after the escape of pressure on Mike on the right there and warning warning for stalling beat it down low I got blood everywhere again that's saying blood everywhere.
It's hard to tell whether this is a nosebleed or the cut on the bridge of the nose.
What about double freight train partners?
And you're 8 to 3 in favor of Chris Paul.
Now, in quarter after their intermission, we all have, of course, 158.
You'll see last year's national champion Joe Williams, on trial against John Daly on the while.
Those are the career wins, the most competitive terms in Iowa State.
He's very close to being second third on six more wins tournaments coming out of the season and he'll catch Gary Brooks here that finished out last year here Mike last saw was the all time win leader for Iowa State one time national champion two time national champion, 28 seconds to go in the first period here at Hilton Coliseum at 150.
And Iowa leads Iowa State 726 and Iowa State could go into the intermission with a lead here after this barn all that way.
So take three, see what Bruno is probably trying to do.
Right.
There was he had a situation where you tried to get him on his back.
Yeah.
And so his points right there, he'd like to get if you can get a technical fall, he'd like to have it with back points.
That makes it five instead of four.
So you look at his crank and turn him right there.
He's going to try to get him to his back, get a count.
Not going to happen this period.
Not enough time.
Down to 5 seconds, a lot of right time.
He already has a11 chance goes to total nice crowd.
What does he want to do?
He'll take the bottom position for a long time.
He said, don't you know, boom.
One of those blocks that first move and flattens Koval out.
He slammed people out.
Paul, you are leading 8 to 3 here in the second period.
All you see looking for that near-fall right there, he's got the leg and he's looking for that tilt power, half tilt right there.
Anything yet he's got to Yeah, that's what he's got to do.
He's got to build up the points more because all of a sudden you're going to find yourself short of a major.
If you try too hard for the pin 8 to 4 after the escape to go, Oh, that's right.
That's got to concern himself with the points right now.
10 to 4.
Eric Coble has lost one fall this year.
He lost it to the number four ranked Matt Craft of Minnesota early in the year.
Young man in three weeks will be back in the Iowa uniform for the Big Ten starting office.
That's the next time the Iowa Hawkeyes compete 10 to 5.
Now, after the escape, it's a five point lead for Bono.
Where he's going to go is going to get called for stolen.
Again, here.
If he keeps backing off like that opponent, doing a great job of circling until toward the middle.
There's another shot right there.
One more shot.
We'll probably get him dinged.
Well, you can't imagine two physically more different wrestlers from a tall, lanky man come back when there's a major with the right time.
Now he's out.
He's still got to build up some football.
Looks more what he wants to do.
We'll build them up with high points.
But that's only the second period.
20 seconds left.
What's it all there is working on the hammerlock and I'll see if he can bar that arm and make something out of that.
Now, we're going to go from here to try to thread through and then come around the front, watch.
Nothing away.
Now the under hooks, he's got to trap his this He's got the two points big You got nothing said no, no that's all I've got.
You know, I thought he went one to do what he did.
The right position was picked by ball up your knee front headlock.
Oh boom.
Oh my gosh.
14 by five is a similar situation that Mark Ironside at 135 found himself in against Frank Kissel.
That's right.
When I look let's look down here Iowa State go lead coming into the intermission here something unusual happens there are good chances for Iowa State to watch the south half here we may be in a meek true Iowa state.
Iowa means we don't know who's going to win.
The reason you're saying all go by the 17th straight.
So it's been a while.
It's been a while.
But there are probably on these team that can't remember finish kissing the people who like that.
And here's where that points not only but we'll put them in a position to be on if it gets a three point near-fall here and doesn't give up any more points.
He has a minute.
Five points is a reality when he doesn't have it in their fold yet the rest know again what he's doing here is the same move.
But he did.
But Coble is getting his arm ready to make that move successfully.
He has to trap the still there, let it go 17 to 7 with the escape, a ten point lead, 30 to 25 seconds to go.
Very tough situation.
There's a bear hug for Paul, but from the rear 319 to 7 center as a crucial pull as far as the point was concerned at the end of the last period.
Yes, Ross said he did not make to make the two counting.
Devon Mono looks over, says, What can I do in 10 seconds for three?
I'm trying to place him.
I can turn him on the legs, but he's not.
It right on time.
Dangerous.
So I said, that's when the time between that's the end of the £150 match.
We've got more outstanding wrestling coming your way and Tim and I will talk about a unique program airing right after the match on Iowa Public Television tonight.
But first, we pause for Station ID and then but it's a little bit interesting so far time It really has.
And it's gone according to how Iowa State is going to do the honors.
And April if live memory Afghanistan state but they want at 126 and 142 two of the four John Miller one of the things they want to talk turn about John Miller and graduate after we're done today when I want to have a state of doing the same conversation.
So by the way, that's just a seconds or so from our conversation with Dan Gable, our producer, John Kerry brand, that together here and you can see it tonight right after work up 7:00 for you.
So after seven, eight, we'll start conversation, pick it up right.
All right.
Well, it's going to be a great one.
And you know what?
It is today has traditionally been held at six 180 people to give you a big round of applause.
Yes, it's a three ring circus because, you know, it's a3a and it just gets real exciting.
It's always exciting people, mothers to fathers out there watching that.
There's a more popular show on Iowa Public television.
I don't know what it is.
And, you know, we have had the circus here to Iowa State.
This is unfortunately for the and think down to our last time I saw first hand pictures which you know, the reason that Iowa State has to win six out of ten extra points already reducing their two points by by your side of 134.
But right here is a great opportunity for Iowa.
Joe Williams at 158, national champion rank number one against John Daley on.
This is a place where I wants to pick up more than three points.
They feel they need that and they do.
They need the extra points.
This is a meet.
This could be a thriller.
If the toss ups continue to go.
Iowa states where Joe Williams ranked number one, the defending national champion against senior John Daley on a Brit.
If they were to wrestle a match as anywhere near as good as the one he used to beat Tucker of Oklahoma we had on TV not too long ago.
I joke that I wouldn't make an important difference because Williams is looking for sexy.
He wants to get a fall.
And of course, that's what he did to Matt Pettit.
So he wrestled for Iowa State.
In the first gloomy, he pinned and Iowa gained six points.
So a different wrestling rival state John Daley on a Brit in here for his fifth year senior for his final time out.
You don't go against Joe Williams.
That low single digit ticket for Joe was it will the kid against the run Williams leading off the second part of the meet the second half that's the that really to say Williams is real quick he's also got long arms and he's able to when he shoots he's further into his opponent than most wrestlers go towards.
That's going to work.
Joe National Champion at £158 from Mount Carmel High School in Harvey, Illinois.
He's beaten his number two rival, Bennett of Illinois, twice this year.
The last time by one point that you saw here on public TV, On television.
What I was thinking here, this Joe Williams was their best opportunity to get more than four points.
I mean, they certainly want four points here.
But of course, Iowa State has the opportunity of whether he will get extra points and Joe might push him away with Ironside and Bono watching, you know, countering each other out with four point degrees.
Here's Iowa's the one.
But here is the state calls very early in the match.
He wants to get people going.
So he's trying to pass off with low point warnings or inactivity early in the match letting go.
And he's warned both Williams and De Leon here, Williams leads by one three minute first period.
We're in the last minute go to it.
And the on of course coached by his father William, the coach of the sport in the state of Ohio.
Wrap it down, ball boy two on one right there aren't right down the man He's got the cradle this 2004 box tosses big huge time and he's going to settle down.
They now need to come through with his arm.
He has that creates the great gap because this is tight and the time is going to wrap now for the final six back points.
He's going to pick it up.
But first, back to the right that breaks down.
There's a back to back points locked up that fast.
One minute things are going all right for Daley.
On the next minute he's in trouble.
They go the five or six pointer to go to the second period.
Daley on takes the bottom position, trailing 7 to 1.
Williams looking for extra points.
His team trails Iowa State 10 to 7 at £158.
You weight go right Hilton Colis that two after the escape Go tie up Don't push away.
Come back.
Control, Hit it.
Let's take out.
Here's where Williams could stay on that right here, you guys break down.
I don't know if he put the pressure on John Daley.
Evans race.
Romero will be here at the top of on from his wrist inactivity and Williams will have things going his way like a steamroller going away from him.
Go nine, three go time.
Joe Williams That's warming right now.
Three I'm talking about right now.
He has to counter by staying in the middle of the match right here.
The takedown starts with the single comes across to the double cups.
Jones Right there.
Go to Wall flips to the back, go on the score.
The difference.
But it said something pretty loud to the crowd.
We have.
Joe, 15 seconds to go.
South Korea, a nine point lead after four after the escape.
And we're looking at the three go down for a technical fall and five points for the team right here.
If he does get now, there's that big he's got to do is get up to that 15 point go then go after the fall if he doesn't get to falling, gets five wave don't waste time after the escape 14 finish 252, one more takedown.
Ready to go.
Stay there.
34 National champion Joe Williams.
His team trails by three.
He would put them up by two if he got this technical fall.
We're at the end of the second period that we still have one two minute period to go.
Well, I think we have to look at look at this foot sweep right there from the underhook right there down to the back.
Nine, doesn't hold him.
So he doesn't get two points for back points, but he's got a big two points now.
Williams doesn't want to go like that good rider going around.
Yes, he does want to take the time to get it right.
Go to put that down in neutral one, get two points real fast with a 13 point lead.
Get it If he gets.
We are now, that's one video.
Very good.
It takes a little more time.
It's over.
That's why he's going to do it would be a five point technical foul and you could look at it couple of ways.
One, a very daunting performance by Joe Williams, but it's also one classic moment that Iowa picked up against.
It was that last time I think that's bad enough opinion got all right.
It is all he's got.
The best wrestlers I've ever seen.
I'm going to see I'm 116, £127.
And this has to stay with him.
Yes.
This is.
But we're saying they are in this fight.
That's right.
Absolute wrestling.
Mike Walker wrestling for a mile has to do a referee.
Apparently, he's come back to give him the last three or four matches.
He's won three in a row.
Duke was ranked two for a time.
He's not ranked now.
And they are a long time rivals.
And this is going to be interesting to see whether UConn improved to the point where he can handle that in a way he couldn't the first time.
Or can Portland keep Iowa State on the road here?
12 to 10, a two point lead for Iowa.
And this, as Tim told you, very early.
Absolutely.
As well.
And so the question is, which one is statement No match.
You could hope and seven against Iowa State in his career he is every bit like can you believe that to nothing is going 14 and he said it up and down make things back but when he's up there both spinners UConn's had six falls this year so he's always dangerous.
There's a lot of pressure being put on by Morton right now.
He's got a lot of pressure on the youth three.
He's got that.
He's got he's looking to try to drive through his first backwards.
Right.
You can't drive.
What can you do?
You can get his wrist up and that is right there.
You know, he may be stalling you, but right there you can't tell you there's nothing the bottom man can do in that state.
United is going to have to establish himself on the team to go against Horford set up and go.
The first time they messed up in 14 to 9 so they will score the opportunity, right?
Delivers it back very nicely.
But he's got to come off He's down right now, he's got his head underneath him.
Yeah.
Burton reaching across, trying to maintain up here with a defensive pass right here his position, if he can hook the lead he's going to get him that was Got 10 seconds to go.
It's like looking back 5 seconds away in all by way that's about to come in for him on top.
I put the cradle on him before he had control to a five.
And I'll tell you, the fans are really looking at this man.
I but of course, it is very, very dangerous.
He's outside outside court number six.
But they have not.
And Running man is capable of serious trouble right now like he does.
All you have to do is tape pressure, put pressure down on the hips right there.
He doesn't need to do anything that he hasn't made.
While against Iowa technical staff.
Again, on the trainers, even in what was a come from behind wrestler.
So one has to keep the pressure on.
But right now he's doing everything you'd want to do.
Minutes last night in the second period, you know, we saw him give that up.
Arizona State winning his wrestler his third last year at the straight Raptors in overtime.
There's a to this inspired heart and prep dominance so far.
Oh he's got like he's got 48 seconds to turn into going 000 I've got to move that clock Iowa 12 eight tomorrow £167.
It's a lot of toss up and this crowd him is mighty glad it showed up.
Give time for the two points.
Oh, okay.
You got to get it all done.
He knows this one is in the air.
This is up in the air.
You breathe hard, you suck it up.
See if I can come up with something to come from behind.
As a couple of other people have come tonight, neither to I should to match.
You have to go here.
Iowa State.
That was a nice shot it with him, dodged it.
And now he's back in that position.
But what Victor needs to do is come on the scene to try to get ready to do what he did last night.
Let's get on top spot down a scale and do it.
You know what?
It took him 67 times to draft one punch.
Oh, wow.
Oh, I think, again, that process like it come down to tell, oh, no, he's going to score.
Could you have it for?
Me?
Why did they never credit it to your leg position?
Well, you want to stay right?
You don't have to change.
You don't have to do anything except if you know that there's less than 40 seconds and you've got to make a decision.
What about their fall pass?
Oh, oh, we don't want to do is give up 2.50 right leg.
Good to get oh oh take now the team that explains that after the coach today is conflicting with any high school wrestler.
Our number one ranked Barry Wells goes against Tony Hirshland of Humble Wrestling for the Hawkeyes, the first day to organize the victory and in 1508 performance.
The reason why I tell you so glad you showed up in action.
Hey, this is great.
We're talking about not looking with high school.
There's a lot of kids in the stands, so we felt like nothing else.
Quarter finals yesterday.
So it's an opportunity.
You see two of the best players and they've they've come out very well.
He's beat the number three man.
He beat the number four man.
He beat number five after losing one of his only two losses early in the season, I'm told matter of Pencil of Pennsylvania.
He hasn't wrestled when the two or three Aaron Simpson did very well in this rank.
First, you know, you're a real important for Iowa State because they could set themselves up to be able to actually lose the last nine matches and win.
You know, it's one of those things where it gives you a little space to it to breathe the extra points.
I mean, on offer up, just one more look like a very well done against Ursuline here at 177 Hilton Coliseum.
The lead belongs to Iowa State.
Well, at this point, we're going to head of course, I favored it when one night a strong split with no heat required on the sidelines and West Ham one.
Anything having to do with you're stage was good So here we go there again on that leg.
It just doesn't want you to know the takes you to go to this one.
77 Looking good the 7732 this year.
Well he's every bit 177 now.
I don't see any more muscle bound in him.
There's a replay in the takedown for Wheldon there.
Well people are saying the same thing about Bono, you know, so five feet, £350 and a lot of disadvantages when you're out of disadvantage.
Last year won the national title.
We'll look at it.
Well, how do you like the race?
He is?
He's stacked and ready to go for, what, 77?
Nobody's going to be any stronger this week.
The only chance I'd have against him if he goes, well, you suddenly reach 4142 after the escape.
I mean, if we cut his hair, it's pretty morning forecast the first time you guys have been getting up in the morning sun, go to San Jose.
Ursuline from Humboldt.
I've seen your work and got a chance to show Russell.
Hey, £77.
Have you done it again?
It's a question of just how well you can extra points and importance.
If you say to him, well, if he gets a four point victory, that puts it where I was six going into the last two.
I mean there are others, but if he gets anything over, then it goes down to heavyweight to win it there.
No offense, but what this does is set up, it goes down to heavyweight.
That's the simplest to say it.
How about your shot?
There you go.
Good.
And it's been a while since Iowa and Iowa State went down to heavyweight on the edge as well.
This point from year less than 10 to 1.
Oh, well at the hands of the man right on the edge of the pool.
4 seconds to go here and a62 lead and four very well to go.
Go get it, get it, get that earlier.
And the first two eight.
We'll show you what happened 15 before.
As much as I like this all the time, look at that front pressure range.
You've been stalling.
Understand all I can say is that very well on top.
A lot of pressure there leading by four.
He would like to get extra points, which means at least an eight point victory.
I was states had done a real good job with the series.
They put the half in and put a lot of pressure on it today in the top position.
Yeah so 63 square foot down on the second floor side trying to keep them working out right there at Reagan, right back down to the astronaut, down to 2.8 to 3.
Now it's over of number one ranked very well.
They are in the Iowa Iowa State meet on Iowa public television.
Tim Johnson I'm Doug Brown.
The star is 14 for Iowa State and 12 for the Hawkeyes.
As we're going into these last three matches and it's gone to the wire.
And here's Wheldon trying for those back points right there, looking, trying to get those back points away.
He can build up the lead with a period of in right after it extra points off a two, four, four point lead.
You get through to there's little shot by Ersan right there but Wheldon just steps aside here he is on a single leg.
All he does is lower his level.
It drags him back to center, lowers his level and dumps him right down to the man, £177 between Iowa and Iowa State, 25 seconds go in the second period of a match led by Wheldon by four points, 8 to 4.
Iowa State wants extra points.
Of course, Iowa wants to prevent it, but cyclones lead by two in the lead, 14 to 12 after 167.
Outer, who had a major decision over my junior, I thought that was just exactly what I'm saying.
It depends on which partner chosen.
Yeah.
Or got the type of showed up tonight.
Well and here's a link car now for this the coaching staff want to happen with Tony Anderson right there to be more heads up than they had to give it up with second, they had some pressure on him coming up because it's likely that his team will be trailing by as much as five points, maybe six.
Actually, it's likely that they'll be trailing by 6/3 period, about 10 to 4 score.
They started on the feet six point lead for well, this is where one doesn't want to let go.
They want to keep the pressure on so they can point with great precision.
Four points surety good, three kangaroos in the first place to go top here, out of bounds with a minute.
15, I have to say.
Here's what the hill right there.
Iowa State 90, your right turn around.
This team is 7 to 4 hard last area.
Well it is essential for Iowa state he can do things that this is a takedown to get a nice guy in his final time.
He's going to be just a good ten to keep Iowa State.
Well, of course, I talked to 8.4.
We need to take the chance to do well with control in the hand.
Oh, he goes, this has to go.
Time to go do it for him, I think.
Well done, I guess.
Tony Harrison, there's a good shot outside it in 10 seconds to go, I suspect as well.
You know, right down center, Chris Clark, if you're wondering, he has 11 for only John to not get in the best way he could do that.
I think you can win and get on the attack full heart.
The same thing.
You don't want to start slow.
He wants to get out there after high mark.
But every time, after £18 where it was a big win for Wittmer last time and Iowa State almost almost won that 53rd treble Hart is young career against Iowa State's two.
And oh, he hasn't lost to the cyclone yet.
Freshman Last year, in his second year of eligibility as a sophomore at all right now so the loss to the number two man in the country Roberson Edinburgh and the number three man all time.
All the time.
That's what he wants to be.
Get that under tight position.
Slow the attack down by four heavyweights will be West Ham and Tarantino, two wrestlers, one a freshman, the other a sophomore in eligibility.
One person from across the legs, two one on one against each other.
So come up with a two time finish in the locker room.
He came up with the single.
Then the man didn't give up till he brought it back on for two four edge points to make that very, very aware.
Move by now.
Give Start What's Mom and her going to do on here in favor of the Iowa Hawkeye Iowa State lead by points in the Canadian heavyweights.
It's 18 to 12.
But to give you a little review of what happened here a little later on, if you tune in late, but it is true, Iowa State leads by six with two matches going to at home for a hard down day for attacking.
He's on the attack, turning Iowa.
Let's be aggressive.
A high percentage move in on the crowd hits right here.
What's the trip?
Trip all the way to the far ankle and goes for the ten points.
Why do you want to have to show some character on your shirt?
Because otherwise you're away from it.
Because otherwise it's going to be a major decision that.
That's right.
And that's exactly what the Iowa State going.
Oh, what they are really is nothing to lose here, too.
He needs to go on the attack more, not just try to slow this down.
It like take down In the first period, we had about seconds to go, 6 to 2 full heart really being strong, but real good for the heat.
Working on his back right now.
This is a situation you can't go a lot of guys respond to when he had that.
Hey, hey, hey.
30 seconds.
All right.
And time was pretty second period.
Mulvihill gets his choice.
All right, gentlemen, here's what's happened so far.
Robert Sanderson.
That could have gone either way.
Hinson beat Matt Ironside, a major Gillis.
He can take that out.
6 to 3 strikes.
Taylor has had three correct answers.
Control of this match on the field, complete with maybe four or eight goals in the high crotch.
This time, Hill was able to start and that's the kind of thing that's when you have a technical foul up.
Without that point, you know, Horton had a major over.
You had him which wasn't very convincing stuff.
The head wrap for the two point takedown of Haley in five and now after this game 824 come on Scott Little shot run around scuffed and run.
Come on up here.
Every aspect of this man against Iowa State Guard.
Four points.
And that's what he says.
This young man is going to make a real go at a national championship that's ranked fifth right now.
But as I said, there's great talent.
He just has to be able to go to.
Right?
Right.
Yeah.
Come on, guys.
Time to rest has gone down like he's look bad right now.
Look that leg, Blake pops right up his head.
It pushes like off right now.
He's wasted trying to score in there.
You write it down.
Scott Brown going to put it down so I can watch it.
Boy, it really doesn't matter here.
Whoever wins heavyweight is going to win the beat for their team.
All right.
Thank you both.
Well, let's get the play down after the need for a conversation that right after a go state.
Iowa Republican baby for Perry was taken into the hall and his trailing group comes back from his performance by full heart.
He has to inspire us right now.
This is an Iowa right now because of the way that has come out of your portfolio, because you're not going to come back in the better matches.
Now, as heavyweight champ, I don't want you here and came back to Midland so handsome for reason.
Drop out of the sense, an 11 point lead back.
Get up, get up.
An 11 point lead for full heart That would if he were to win a major decision and we'll take it to heavyweight of 18 to 16 in favor of Iowa State.
If you want a technical fall, one zero you say I'll just go back on to recover will still be a 4.17 to 7.
So a lot of attack left in full heart right there, right at the seven, and then comes full heart with 35 seconds left to go.
One that will make a difference.
And the thing is, when he gets five or six doesn't make a difference here.
It comes down to him for, hey, he got it.
So it's a nice back.
It's right here, right back to the other way.
A technical fall.
Oh, it's not over yet.
Watch it.
23 is it is score 22 to 7.
Yeah.
You get a score, gentlemen, This is bad.
So it was here last time someone went to and Thompson wants to turn it to perfection.
By contrast, here has been in this situation before.
The crowd was hands and soft at a high school table.
And whoever wins this match wins the meet first, say bad situation against that day.
He's to right to her when he position, he uses his body well and get out of position sometimes if he was on his shot right there, sometimes the hips go off.
The referee likes to call to the match set, pitch, possibly play in love.
At this moment of strength that is at stake.
Whoever does this match wins.
And what's the odds both of there would be a down side That's pretty good.
I think that this painting at Hilton Coliseum, it's like the 1710 Iowa State never draw down.
Somebody is going to win on the other end.
And in the stakes itself is a key right here for both of us.
All right.
Our young and talented effort off you could go with a lot of high dollar talent.
You should have the time.
Maybe the first person, not just a few seconds to play.
And that's what it's going to come down to.
We're going to see at this point in time, at this time of the season, it does have to know probably who has more heart after that activity.
I don't know really.
I think our guys at this point, I don't think I have 1.5 seconds to go.
You got it.
I don't know what that means.
I know Steph decides whether I work for the first time.
The we call it the basket.
I was 4%.
This is the fourth most United States and no one has put suppressor on it.
Just it was just a little bit.
But that's what one of the two or the other wrestlers replacement unit gets.
The first gets the choice of being a heavyweight since just next to strategy time.
And you can talk to ESPN right now.
It's time for the rest of what I call the last that there's West Ham every 20 seconds.
This have held on top and it gets twisted and continue not just pushed him off the map much more go to 10 seconds to go.
No that time does still go three feet and it can freeze slowly and set it up your shoulder, your shirt right.
Type the same time to the side right now because he's doing a better job.
Three more pressure inside.
2 seconds to go.
Opposition again and this is where the of it you just like to come out of here and get something to go position him in the hands he gets is not.
Yeah it's not right here I don't know how to have this place for him to die.
It's just that it's something for lesson and it's good for us all.
As long as seconds have shot for landscape, being ranked number nine doesn't make much difference.
It seems to me to match up.
That one just was as close as I can be able to go well beyond mistakes right there by 118 at heavyweight for Iowa State probably made the difference slip throw yeah by Sanderson and then a little overanxious he thought he indicated thought he had the takedown and then he shot it and got flattened out and got the two points by West End.
So this was a barnburner.
This was a thriller.
And I don't have to tune in late 2012.
So I was beat to just be right.
There you go.
Well, again, the final score was never more numbers of friends like that and support for the public television program.
Support for PBS provided by:
