It's 2 I 1 Grand View but last year, Kearney got the win.
>> Jim: and they have all been great meets and expect another one tonight.
>> Tim: Kearney had injuries during practice and one came to their 125 pounder but a great story and the replacement in Adonis Lattimore who was born without any legs and only one finger on one hand.
And here he is from Virginia Beach, he won a state championship and he's in the lineup tonight.
Great story.
>> Jim: respect for Adonis.
I'm looking forward to seeing him compete.
>> Tim: let's take a look at tonight's lineup.
We are going to start right there with Adonis at 125 versus the number one ranked Aden Reeves.

Hello everyone.
I am Tim Johnson along with legendary coach Jim Miller.
The series is 2 Ivan 1 Grand View and it's only the fourth year that they have wrestled but last year Kearney got a win.
>> Jim: all three of those meats have been great and I expect one tonight.
>> Tim: unfortunately Kearney had a couple of injuries in practice this week in 125 pounds.
Their number one ranked athlete is not in the lineup, but a great story.
This is Adonis Lattimore, born without legs and only one finger on one of the hands out of Virginia Beach.
He was a state champion and will be stepping in.
what a story.
>> Jim: can't wait to see him, Adonis wrestle , man.
Mad respect for him.
>> Tim: let's look at tonight's lineup starting at 125.
We have Adonis Lattimore versus Aden Reeves.
at 133 Hector Serratos versus Jackson Cockrell, 141.
What do you see in the second half?
>> Jim: we've got Garrett Willuweit against Cam Robinson and now there's two brothers here Jacobi and Jacari, back-to-back brothers and then we have Jacob Awiszus.
We are going to a GK.
That's what he wants to go, at 97 and then we have Howard the number one ranked heavyweight in NAIA and Greg Hagan , both ranked number one.
>> Tim: let's send it over to Scott who will introduce us to our teams.
>> It's a new year and a new chance for Grand View to corral on opponent that snapped the Vikings winning streak over them, a tight finish last year saw the University of Nebraska Kearney prevailed by just one point.
It's a tingle with The Lopers as Grand View defends their home at .

Tonight, our first duel of the 2025 season sees a clash between NAIA and NCAA Division II powers as the University of Nebraska Kearney lopers take on the Grand View University Vikings here in Iowa's capital city .
Hello everyone, I am Tim Johnson.
It is just a joy to have college wrestling back on Iowa PBS .
Along with my partner, legendary coach Jim Miller, this series between Kearney and Grand View was a short one.
this is only the fourth year, and Jacari to last year.
>> Jim: all of them have been good and we are going to see another one tonight.
>> Tim: unfortunately, Kearney had a couple of injuries and practice.
Two number one ranked guys, one of them at 125, but what a story.
Stepping in for the Lopers is Adonis Lattimore out of Virginia Beach , a state champion out of Virginia, born without legs and only one finger on one of the hands and he stepping out on the mat.
What a story.
>> Jim: man, mad respect for this kid.
I can't wait to see him get a chance to compete.
>> Tim: let's take a look at tonight's lineup.
We start at 125, Adonis Lattimore will go up against the number one ranked Aden Reeves.
Talk about number one, they've got six number one ranked guys, Grand View.
Hector Serratos versus through, Joseph Airola versus another number one ranked Carson Taylor .
At 149, Cael Robb going against Darnai Heard.
>> Jim: we've got Jacobi Deal versus Alex Reynolds, Jacari Deal versus Jameel Coles, and we've got Jacob Awiszus versus GK and I'm just going to leave it for you.
I just call him the champ .
He's number one defending champ.
Crew Howard and Greg Hagan.
>> Tim: two number ones at heavyweight.
Stick around.
>> Tim: time to send it out to one of the great voices in our sport, the PA announcer Scott Casper who will introduce our teams.
>> Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Sisam Arena.
Introducing first from the University of Nebraska Kearney , the Lopers.
>> [ applause ] >> Tim: a little technical issue with the PA announcer but there's no tech issue with the crowd tonight.
Packed house.
>> Jim: this is awesome.
How about the Vikings and 12 out of the last 13 years national champions?
>> Tim: unbelievable.
Mitchell started the program in 2008 - 09 .
>> Jim: they are going to have the introductions now right after the national anthem.
>> He is a 2023 197 pound national champion, a four - time All-American and a former wrestling standout and an all-around great guy.
>> O say, can you see By the dawn's early light What so proudly we hailed At the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars Through the perilous fight O'er the ramparts we watched Were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there Oh, say, does that Star-spangled banner yet wave O'er the land of the free And the home of the brave?
>> [ applause ] >> Tim: what a voice.
>> Jim: and a national champ.
National champ for Grand View two years ago and the from Kansas.
I like the little toying.
He's got a voice there.
we are probably going to hear from him.
>> Introducing first , Adonis Lattimore.
>> Tim: there go the introductions at 125 like we said , Aden Reeves.
Number one ranked for Grand View at 125 going up against Adonis Lattimore.
>> Jim: one of six, right?
You ever had six number one ranked?
That would be beating the All-Star meat or something.
>> Tim: I am sitting by the legendary coach Jim Miller.
10 national championships as a coach and a finalist to another years.
About 20 years top two?
>> Jim: nine I think.
Eight or nine.
Only eight back.
>> Tim: later in the season I will probably have to take both arms and hold you down.
>> Jim: that will be a great one.
>> Tim: Jim now the director of the Dan Gable Museum and Hall of Fame.
Just a great promoter of this sport and speaking of, I said one of the great voices of our sport, Scott Casper.
He's been a great promoter of this sport.
>> Jim: yes he has, for a long time, too.
>> Tim: again we are talking about a packed crowd.
Being the number one ranked NAIA is Grand View and Nick Mitchell wrestled for you, assistant coached with you.
>> Jim: three time All-American, 8 - year assistant coach.
Came here in 2008 - 09.
Started the program from scratch and four years later won a national title.
Now he's won 12 out of the last 13.
Come on, that's crazy.
>> Tim: and longtime assistant Paul really wrestled for you -- Paul Reedy.
>> Jim: he won three Heiskell titles --three high school titles .
>> Tim: speaking of Iowans , Dalton Jensen and Andrew Sorenson have been at Kearney for a while after coming over from ISU as a wrestler and transferred to Kearney and was a national champion in 2012 for the Lopers.
Missouri Valley, Iowa and Andrew Sorenson was a two-time state place winner and also and Iowa State wrestler.
Those guys have been longtime friends and now assistant coach is doing a great job.
>> Jim: I think they were roommates at Iowa State.
They know each other well and are doing a great job.
>> Tim: I asked them you are probably each other's best men.
I said we were best men in our weddings, too.
We go back a long way, Milbay.
One of the coaches for Kearney is my hero.
Tom McCann.
25 years in high school wrestling in high school and now the last 15 volunteering for the Lopers.
Man, he's never going to retire.
>> Jim: heroes of our sport guys like him.
>> Tim: you just have to keep on.
The two favorite words of my age.
Of course you are older than me.
>> Tonight it will be either Braden Anderson or Jameel Coles.
From Pennsylvania.
We go to 197 pounds.
>> Tim: don't miss a minute of today's college wrestling action.
Catch the live stream on iowapbs.
org, the Iowa PBS app, the Facebook page, or our YouTube channel.
We were doing it 40 years ago at the Iowa Public television and now Iowa PBS, now it's worldwide.
YouTube, Facebook and all the various social media outlets.
It's pretty cool.
>> Jim: that's how we want it.
Everybody an opportunity to tune in and see some great college wrestling.
We've got five meets coming up in the next few weeks.
>> Tim: right now, the two number one heavyweight just met at the middle.
Number one ranked in NCAA and number one in --NAIA and both natives , we will talk more about that but you don't want to go away from that one.
>> Tim: here come the captains.
Take a look at that.
Those are some big men.
The official in the middle , Jay Cox, one of the great officials that does wrestling at all divisions.
He steps in as the official today.
We are going to get going now at 125 pounds.
>> Referee: Even matches.
They will have first choice.
>> Jim: wrestling is for everybody.
>> Tim: there's the picture , for all abilities.
And you know, -- >> Jim: big, small, male or female, doesn't matter.
>> Tim: and this is what Adonis decided and said he brought home a flyer to his dad and his dad said let's get into this.
He said tremendous support from his parents and I'm sure they are watching .
Way to go.
Way to raise a son that's not afraid of anything and here comes the number one ranked Aden Reeves , two-time state champion and five-time Fargo All-American.
Third last year in NAIA.
He is 11 and 3 and ranked number one.
Quick take down.
>> Jim: Adonis Lattimore is all good at all the spots on them mat and he locks something up and takes Adonis toward his back.
Not sure how close he has to get before he gets account.
>> Tim: got to get the elbow down.
>> Jim: there's account.
>> Referee: One, two-- >> Tim: we've got a rowdy crowd here and are going to pay tribute to the national champion football team that is right behind us, the entire football team won the national NAIA championship .
Given to Adonis and another takedown by Aden Reeves.
>> Jim: Aden playing the takedown game and Adonis trying to hang in there.
>> Tim: Adonis Lattimore, Lansdowne high School out of Virginia Beach, Virginia.
He was a champion at 106 and now Aden Reeves is putting the hurt on him right now.
>> Jim: in trouble, got him in trouble .
It 1- 1 right now.
He's got a four - count.
Close to a fall , putting the pressure on .
>> Tim: Adonis Lattimore gets back to the base and four points near fall .
>> Jim: up by 11, another turn would put a technical fall on the board.
>> Tim: 12 - 1 the score right now and we are working on a technical issue with the graphics.
12 - 2 with an escape for Lattimore.
>> Jim: and on a single .
Nice shot trying to turn a corner .
Reeves trying to sit behind, scramble position now.
Goes up on top, really nice job.
>> Tim: if he gets to that, this could be it right there.
looking for the fall, squeezing it out and a fall for Aden Reeves, number one in the nation.
Six points for the Vikings.
They go up 6 -0 after the first match here at 125 pounds.
>> Jim: here's the replay.
Catches them on the back and now you have to cinch it up.
No big moves, little by little and there it is.
Big start for Grand View.
Now we are at 133 tran 03 for Grand View and he is a triplet.
Against Hector Serratos from Nebraska Kearney .
>> Tim: Hector Serratos out of Wichita, Kansas.
He was a three-time state champion.
A really nice program down there in the Wichita area going up against tran 03 out of broken arrow, Oklahoma .
Transfer from Maryland, comes in from the Big Ten and like you said a triplet.
His sister, Alexandria , is a wrestling manager.
Came to wrestle on the women's team and now his brother Bryce is on the team as well.
>> Jim: how about that?
Triple it's all Grand View.
>> Tim: their father was influential in all of them being in this sport and very influential making wrestling so strong around the Tulsa and broken arrow, Oklahoma area.
>> Jim: good scrap here, Cockrell and Serratos.
>> Tim: we are talking about Grand View having six out of the 10 number one ranked , nationally number one ranked wrestlers.
Well Jackson Cockrell, he is not number one ranked, he's number two.
He was sixth in NAIA last year, number two -ranked right now.
He beat last year's runner-up in overtime and the same wrestler last year.
A lot of improvement from last year to this year and he's got his eyes on the prize, I'm sure.
>> Jim: good fighting going on, not much scoring but some good wrestling.
Nice shot by Cockrell.
Defended well.
Some good athletes in both these guys .
>> Tim: 6 - 0 the score, Grand View on the strength of a pin by Aden Reeves .
>> Referee: Offense, gentleman.
>> Tim: we are at 133 for the number two -ranked.
Still feeling it out in the first period.
No score with just over a minute left in the first period.
I was talking to you earlier, 12 out of the last 13 years, national championships for Grand View and I still think of it as one of the best kept secrets in wrestling.
>> Jim: I hear you man, they've been so dominant it's just been crazy.
When you start the program from scratch , first year 2009 and this is where they are out, this is been phenomenal by Nick Mitchell , Grant Henderson, Paul Reedy.
I know that Nick Mitchell came here from Warburg but came here with a formula to do the same thing.
Here's a nice shot by Serratos.
Great defense, Cockrell.
>> Tim: a very knowledgeable crowd and football players give a big round of approval to the defense of their guy, Cockrell.
We talked about Nick Mitchell, he's not far from home.
A little shout out to my old friend and his friend Frank who was the coach at the time and when I was coaching at Mount Vernon he was coaching when I was a prep .
So I know that he's watching and I want to see a big hello and thank you for all of the investment into this sport that you have given, Hall of Famer Frank.
>> Tim: this is a match that Nebraska Kearney feels they have to get.
This is Serratos capable of winning this match but Cockrell ranked second like you said .
No luck yet .
He doesn't look like he wants to get rid of him so he's going to keep writing and he does.
>> Jim: he has put a lot of pressure on him there.
really nice job of the whistle.
He has been on him and you can tell, he wants to get it in time and where him down but there is an escape.
>> Tim: that's a perfect play right there, got a stall and an escape.
>> Jim: here's his opportunity and you have a minute to go.
Whoever gets a takedown if they can is going to be an advantage to whoever wins this match.
>> Tim: the hand fighting so important right here .
>> Jim: these guys are pretty evenly matched.
Nice shot again and again.
Nice go behind Cockrell but nothing on the edge.
>> Tim: I think that Serratos was able to keep getting his back to the mat and there may be another stall call but he did a nice job of coming around.
>> Jim: good point.
>> Tim: want to get the attention of the official you have to have awareness and say a couple more shots, get that call.
>> Jim: obviously that stall point looks like it's going to go a long way but 20 seconds left, 1- 0 Serratos.
>> Tim: 41 seconds, so not a minute for Cockrell.
Looks like it's going to go to the third period 1- 0 lead on the strength of his escape and he will have his choice .
Tran 03, broken arrow, Oklahoma up against Wichita Kansas three-time state champion , a program guide .
The coach that first year in the starting lineup.
>> Jim: moved up .
Academic honor roll, academic All-American .
That makes it a lot easier as a coach when you have kids like that who do everything right.
Training, go to school, same thing for Serratos.
He's going to fight but he gets rid of him and now we have a 1-1 with 34 seconds of time so not a factor.
>> Tim: these guys are both getting after it.
Hand fighting, looking for the angle and that look to get to the leg.
How important is it to move side to side, you know?
You can't go straight on at this level.
>> Jim: and these guys are both hanging in the middle , man.
Not backing out.
We are getting most of the action in the middle.
Some good fakes, some good hand fighting .
>> Tim: Cockrell you have a great opportunity with the fans, every move he makes they get excited .
Such a great fan base here.
And on a shot, fended off, back in, another shot.
>> Jim: they know that one of these times they're going to get in and be able to score and there it is.
Serratos spins around, captures his leg so we have a stalemate situation here and there it is.
>> Jim: 43 seconds left in regulation and if it's tied we will go to sudden victory and talk about that when we get there.
only 34 seconds , not an issue.
It's 1- 1 and 35 seconds left .
Who can find the angle and get in on the leg and finish?
>> Tim: there's another shot, Serratos but nothing doing.
Cockrell with an under hook .
Wants to bounce him.
Going behind, nothing doing there, either.
Oh my goodness, some great action here.
>> Jim: no points, no score.
My goodness.
We are going to sudden victory.
Nick Mitchell gets out, says a few things.
>> Tim: what did he say, coach?
>> Jim: he said get a takedown .
There we go.
>> Tim: two minutes on the clock and he scores.
There's not going to be any stalling called here.
>> Jim: this is a great action match and it's 1-1 .
Any score right here wins and there's a shot.
>> Tim: nice go behind, there we go.
Serratos gets the takedown on the number two -ranked NAIA wrestler , Jackson Cockrell tremendous match and there's your winner .
>> Jim: that was earned.
>> Tim: Hector Serratos for the Lopers and three points on the board for the Lopers in overtime.
>> Jim: Serratos goes behind, drops down to both legs, finishes, and man what a match.
Great win for him.
He earned it.
>> Tim: well coach, I always talk about how you execute when you are tired is what separates the winners.
You know that they are both tired.
Great execution on Serratos 's part.
Jim Miller wrote a book on that.
Do it anyway.
And he did it anyway, you know?
>> Tim: here we go, number one ranked Carson Taylor who is a champ out of Fort Dodge.
A four-seam All-American, one of the Covid kids who gets a 60 year-- who gets a year number six.
Going up against Joe Airola.
>> Jim: good defense here, trying to capture the leg and pass it.
>> Tim: he gets to his belly, doesn't he?
>> Jim: so far, so good but Taylor doing a nice job as well.
That's a dangerous spot right here.
>> Tim: you have to watch the knee sometimes , too.
>> Jim: Joe Airola is doing a nice job of defensively hanging in there and now he is in an advantage position and got him upside down.
>> Tim: what is he want to do with this waterfall position?
>> Jim: he's got to get his wrist free and Taylor is doing a nice job of capturing the wrist so he is really stymied right there.
we should get a stalemate but Taylor has an advantage if he can break his grip , but Airola -- man.
That was a good stalemate call but some really good action.
Airola is 9 and 6 but Nebraska Kearney has wrestled Nebraska, Little Rock and Iowa, all Division I teams and then they go to national meets and they have been wrestling some high-level competition.
Nice shot by Taylor.
>> Tim: I like the way Taylor continues to shoot going after it .
Airola is doing a good job trying to fend it off by capturing the angle .
Upside down Taylor lift him .
He needs to push one over.
-- Wow.
Airola again passes the leg.
He comes up on top , now Taylor is holding on to the ankle maybe looking for a stalemate position here .
>> Jim: well Airola is looking for a stalemate and it's a judgment call by the official.
Who has control?
And right now he is saying nobody does.
Here comes Taylor .
He's got height.
>> Tim: close to a takedown but -- Oh my goodness.
That is a good no call.
>> Jim: great scrap .
Airola out of award , Colorado, needle and high school.
He wrestled in Boulder because Nederland did not have a wrestling program.
>> Tim: got some hammers coming out of there.
>> Jim: that's a great part of --a great cloud to be in part of in the Greeley and Windsor area.
And is there a more storied program than Fort Dodge?
And if you just want to put tough in the Webster dictionary in my era -- >> Tim: on a single tries to cut to the double and I'll tell you what.
Taylor has been aggressive on his feet and has gotten in but Airola has been stellar defensively here.
>> Jim: the top of the podium has alluded Taylor.
He's been second, third twice, a four -time All-American, but he's ranked number one.
This week's rankings, six number one Vikings come out with the new rankings .
>> Tim: two years ago these guys split at 133.
Now they are both up to 141 but they didn't wrestle last year .
Airola cuts the first point.
>> Jim: the Vikings Taylor gets the first point with the escape and goes up 1- 0.
>> Jim: I think again , it always comes down to inches, but gas tank.
These guys are fighters but who can execute when they are tired?
Who has the gas tank?
From the history and what they've done so far it looks like both of them, shape isn't a problem.
>> Tim: Taylor has been the aggressor on his feet .
Hasn't been able to really get in deep and Airola has been great defensively .
Now he's got Airola with an under hook , might be looking for a heel pick or something but we've got 40 seconds left.
Another shot, this time Taylor gets in deeper and on a single--Oh my goodness.
Airola nice defense.
He's in on a single, on the edge , good defense by Taylor and this is like 133.
>> Tim: great action.
>> Jim: on the edge, go back to center, Carson Taylor.
17 and 2.
Joe Airola 9 and 6 and as you talked about, Kearney up against three Division I schools, you know you're going to have some losses.
>> Tim: they did that in the first submit -- semester.
The top two teams in division two .
You have to give it to them.
They know what dividends that will pay off down the road and later in the match.
>> Jim: later in the period scored 1- 0 and the leader is Carson Taylor on strains of escape and he's not going to go under.
Airola is going to depend on his feet .
>> Jim: Taylor is a hammer on top .
Trust me.
You don't want to get underneath him, that's probably his best position.
>> Jim: they split two years ago, they know each other, and having mat awareness and some savviness , it's a risk.
You have to do something you haven't done yet in this match.
>> Jim: Nick Mitchell said we got lucky when we got Carson Taylor.
He said he wasn't recruited by many people and Mitchell said we got lucky, four -2 time All-American trying to become a fifth.
>> Tim: he has gotten better every year.
Here they are on the edge.
Airola needs to circle in like he's doing and kind of the onus is on him getting down toward a minute because it's 1-nothing and he took neutral.
He's got to attack and make sure that it pays off.
>> Jim: and no stop called.
Taylor can be aware of that and how do you--when you are coaching, they've got to be aware of that.
They can't back away but how do you coach that?
>> Jim: you don't want to think about it until the very end with little time left.
There's another good shot by Taylor.
In on a single.
Airola is just stellar on defense, though, but you know what?
Taylor has the clock on his side.
He's on the leg on the clock is ticking.
>> Jim: if nothing else it's a clock eater.
>> Tim: what he does better this time, gets all the way to his feet.
Airola really good defense, still.
Back to the outside down situation.
He knows the time is running out.
He looked at the clock.
>> Jim: he can flip the ankle but Taylor has that pretty well.
The official calls him up and you've got 20 seconds.
>> Jim: now or never.
What's your go to move?
>> Tim: we will see what he does.
Taylor knows the defense so here's the chance.
I'm not going to give up anything, I know that I don't have a stop call.
Try a little throw by .
There's the call but there's only six seconds left.
>> Tim: crowd doesn't like it.
They been going at it.
Anything can happen.
>> Tim: nice job by Taylor.
That's how you do it.
If you are ahead, don't wait .
You sit him.
>> Jim: that is how you do it to answer the loss of 133, you come back with a hard-fought win.
Carson Taylor, the number one ranked 141 pounder gets a tough - fought win for the Vikings and they go up 9 - 3 after three matches.
Six points from the first match at 125.
>> Tim: here's the replay.
Taylor gets an escape .
>> Jim: that's how it ended.
1-0.
But it wasn't like that.
It was hard-fought.
>> Jim: they were going at it .
I love it.
>> Jim: 149 pounds.
Darnai Heard.
>> Jim: so we've got Brady Collins out of ouray, Colorado.
Had a thumb injury in the fall and the shoulder that kept him out of the postseason.
A Fargo All-American going up against Darnai Heard, one of the Heard brothers and we have his brother coming up next.
He is ranked number three out of Cincinnati by way of Iowa Central where he was a national champion at 157.
>> Jim: he's really athletic.
>> Tim: coach think that he can be a podium guy for the end of the year.
>> Jim: a redshirt freshman he is.
>> Tim: his first competition was last week at the national dual .
>> Jim: Darnai Heard, 18 and 5 his record.
Ranked number three .
Coach says he is a little bit unorthodox.
>> Tim: he says when he goes, look out.
I want to see it.
Nice job, think he got stunned .
I think they hit their heads, maybe, and Heard got stunned and Collins just did go behind and scored a takedown.
>> Referee: There is no injury time.
>> Jim: the chin.
And like your word, he got stunned just for a second and then Collins snapped, got around, three points so 3 -0 Brady Collins out in front early.
>> Tim: a somersault, Heard catches him, has them in trouble.
Collins holding on for dear life here .
Think he's at least going to give up a reversal and there it is.
That was quick.
>> Jim: in unison from the football team they know that they are wrestling and right behind us going nuts.
Any time something good happens for the Vikings.
>> Tim: escape by Collins.
4 - 2.
>> Jim: an early takedown, reversal and an escape and back on their feet.
>> Tim: and Heard has long arms and dove at him and almost got a double on the edge .
Nice and high up to his feet.
He's in a good spot here.
See if he can finish.
>> Jim: I like a little bit of violence when you are wanting to return , what do you like to do here?
>> Tim: Collins is going to need a takedown but Heard is so athletic, he's doing the right three --the right thing, stepping in.
Oh my goodness, Heard does a somersault and now Collins is holding on at the edge.
Still has his left ankle.
>> Jim: Jay Cox is consistent, did not call it a takedown earlier in the same situation.
>> Tim: I think it was the right call.
You see that?
Heard was waiting for this and just dives under it.
Nice shot.
Beautiful.
>> Jim: good left -- good lifting.
Going to elevate, there it is .
Look out.
Explosive is right.
>> Tim: like Mitchell said, when he goes, look out.
>> Jim: how do you not get pumped up with this crowd behind you?
>> Tim: there's four point near - fall and all of a sudden 9-4.
>> Jim: 13 points scored after winning a couple of matches , going a couple of matches with the 0 - 0.
>> Tim: there's a replay.
Nice double, steps in, bottom like , elevates , and gets back points.
Collins has already felt it once but there it is again.
He is so explosive, gets up and drives right back.
>> Jim: two- point reversal.
>> Tim: looking to lift him up .
He's close to back points here .
He's got Collins in trouble.
>> Jim: any part of Collins staying on the mat .
Wow .
>> [ applause ] >> Tim: crowd loves that guy.
>> Jim: there's the replay.
Little by little, he's got it close and he just cinches it up and there it is.
That's the Grand View crowd exploding .
>> Tim: all right.
Now we are going to see Elon Heard.
That is the brother right?
And he is recently ranked number one.
Only 6 and 2 getting back in the lineup I had a great national dual.
Pinned the number four guy from southern Oregon and now he's ranked number one going up against Cael Robb.
If you think over Nebraska is he a brother of patent?
-- Of Peyton Robb?
>> Tim: I don't think he wants his brother to show him up.
A big takedown for E'lan Heard.
Elevating with the knee and trying to get some points, no points.
Cael Robb, he is no joke.
He can wrestle, he's really good on top so he doesn't want to give up any back points here >> Jim: E'lan Heard also out of Cincinnati , looking to turn the shoulders past the 45.
Jay Cox is looking for it to be passed 45, and trend --Cael Robb doing a nice job fighting that off.
>> Jim: he's in this match, he knows he needs to get out of there .
There's 1:35 left in the first period with a lot of action already.
Out of Medford, you Minnesota is what Robb is, redshirt freshman.
A lot of wrestling in front of him.
>> Tim: a nice, deep waist jam by Heard .
Racking up some time .
Robb gets to his feet but right back down with Heard.
He has been tough .
Legs , he is thinking that half deep , Robb really trying to do all he can to fight that off which he has so far.
>> Jim: he's driving deep looking for that.
57/ --50 seconds left and has not had a near fall.
Great fight by Cael Robb.
Nice, come around on top.
>> Tim: a reversal.
That is where he likes to be.
What a turnaround.
>> Tim: that's how it works man.
>> Jim: don't give up any back points, stay in the match and then you sneak in the reversal and now it's only 3 -2.
>> Tim: you want to show the first two minutes to some of your wrestlers about Cael Robb .
Didn't let him turn .
If he turns him, he likely gets pinned and that is some guts and gumption right there.
>> Tim: this is a really important 12 seconds to ride out Heard.
1:39 so far.
Did not give up an escape here.
Nice mat return but does a nice job anticipating that mat return.
Looks like Cael Robb will get the right up .
And he does, 3 -2.
>> Tim: Robb gets his choice and he's going to defer to E'lan Heard who will choose --he's going down.
Cael Robb, this is his best position.
Long, tall guy and he can ride .
I guess we will see but E'lan Heard, he is so explosive.
Can get to his feet quick and see what happens here.
>> Jim: such a great atmosphere here in these wrestlers have given also show.
>> Tim: nice arm bar right away.
That's probably right where he wants to be.
>> Jim: right now this is money for Cael Robb .
>> Tim: erasing the writing time.
You can tell he's done that before .
>> Jim: the head lever .
>> Tim: he's going to hit this tilt and losing a little bit but my goodness that is where he wants to go and of nothing else, he has a raced the riding time advantage and he's looking for the tilt.
Pretty soon-- >> Tim: here he goes again.
He does a nice job getting his arm free and he does a reversal.
>> Jim: really nice job with the reversal, two points.
Out front 5 -2 , starts building of the riding time, puts the boot in, takes it out, think he's going to go on his feet 5 Ivan 3 .
55 seconds left.
>> Jim: this is where if you are Heard you want to get right back in and do your thing.
>> Tim: Robb gets the stick down he will take the lead.
Nice fireman carry.
Great action from Robb not getting carried, at least .
Covers the hips, gets three.
Big takedown.
For E'lan Heard.
>> Tim: I think we've got blood time right now .
There's no penalty for that.
They can take as much time as they want.
Nope, they stuffed him, stuffed the nose, they go back.
15 -3 team score, Grand View in the lead.
>> Jim: a couple of pins by Grand View.
>> Tim: E'lan Heard on top .
About to get a minute of riding time back but Cael Robb, he is sneaky.
What's the score before the period ends?
>> Jim: nice follow by Heard and way to stretch them out.
Nice job on top stretching out Robb.
>> Tim: absolutely.
Rides him out.
A 1- 3, 1:20 riding time and now it's Robb 's choice.
See what he wants to do here.
He's going down.
>> Jim: you have to get out and get something going.
>> Tim: here's the tilt he tried to hit and I best move --I bet most people get this but Heard comes around and gets a reversal on this one.
Robb up to his feet gets the score 8-4 .
He tried a nice shot, Heard a nice counter .
Third period and my goodness.
Where did that come from?
Where did he go?
>> Jim: E'lan Heard ducking under .
>> Tim: 11 -format, pulls and back.
I like to see his brothers wrestle in practice .
Here's a replay, watch this.
My goodness.
>> Jim: I look to that one up and that was the picture that I saw.
>> Tim: that's a textbook .
So quick.
Another escape , lets them go.
Once a major decision and needs a takedown.
Nice shot by Robb.
There's no quitting here.
>> Jim: a minute left, you get a takedown and back points .
He's got the 3 , the cradle.
Tremendous job I Heard breaking that.
>> Tim: you can see why Robb is dangerous.
>> Jim: that was 11 hyphenate back , had it locked up.
>> Tim: going for the tilt and gets a cradle.
Taking him over and Heard brakes.
>> Jim: both these guys have done a tremendous job fending off the offense of the other guy.
He gets a four-point here.
>> Tim: the head lever again.
You know he wants to capture that are manned get a tilt action going on.
Starts with a head lever to get it.
He's got those long arms .
See if he can get there to the arm bar.
Bottom guy, not going to affect the outcome here.
There will be no riding time but it's going to be too little too late and E'lan Heard the number one ranked wrestler at 157 is going to hold on for the win.
Tremendous , tremendous bout .
Each of the guys coming back and forth, nice work.
>> Tim: we want to do a coach interview .
Here's the replay.
There's the end of the match.
Great match.
We've got coach Mitchell here at halftime.
It never goes exactly how you want, but what do you think so far?
>> It was okay.
I don't know.
I mean, our guys are offensive, I like that.
That last match, when it got South he kept scoring.
Obviously we have to stay a little more solid.
It's hard to be disappointed but we've got to stay in a better position within that fight so that's it.
We are looking ahead.
>> Tim: 18 - 3 but some great matches along the way.
What are you going to tell the team at halftime?
>> That's what we expected.
We like it tough and we want it tough.
This is exactly what we are ready for so I hope that it's tough the next time, too.
>> Jim: 18 - 3.
Stick around, we will be back after intermission to talk with the Grand View staff along with highlights and results of the first half.
Thank you for viewing.

Right now the score is 18 - 3 , Grand View leading Kearney.
And Grand View University recognized their 2024 NAIA championship winning football team here during the break, capping a perfect 14 -0 season by knocking off number one ranked Keiser University just a few days before Christmas.
>> Tim: hello everyone, I am Tim Johnson back with you at Sisam Arena on the Grand View University campus.
I am with Troy, the vice president of athletics for Grand View and Troy you said you've been here since a long time but since 2007.
What a success and how about that football team?
Has to be a great feeling for you.
>> Yeah, it was.
The kids were great all year.
Just, all business.
Worked really, really hard and it was a unique situation where they truly, truly played for each other and trusted the guy next to them and it all came together and they went on a nice playoff run.
>> Tim: they couldn't do it without the facilities and obviously you have overseen a lot of building and facilities and the whole bit and it is such a big part of your job.
Congratulations to you .
And then of course the wrestling team, how do you beat in our world and the wrestling world, 12 of the last 13 national championships led by Nick Mitchell?
>> They are pretty special.
Coach Mitchell does a great job, and his staff does a great job of getting the right kids in that want to be a part of the program and fit his championship lifestyle.
Really comes out and just phenomenal to have the success they've had.
When we first started the program and hired Nick we didn't think it would be anything like this.
We were hoping it would be pretty good but this is something pretty special and he's a special coach.
It's a tribute to all the guys that came before the guys that are here now and how hard they've worked.
It's pretty impressive to be a part of day to day.
>> Tim: now you have women's wrestling and we will be right back here for William Penn versus Grand View women.
Fastest growing sport in America is women's wrestling in college.
>> It was one of those where if we are going to be this good maybe we ought to try the women's side and it's turning out to be pretty close.
They finished second nationally and he's done a wonderful job with the women's team coming right along and a group to watch.
>> Tim: I think you have found a formula for success and congratulations on great leadership as it all starts with leadership .
Thank you for yours.
>> I don't know about that, hire good coaches and you will get a good group of kids.
>> Tim: we are on our way back .
Our score at intermission is 18 -3 Grand View.
We will be right back to recap the first five matches before the second-half action resumes.

org .
Our next matchup features Laura's college .
Let's go.
>> Tim: we are back at the Fieldhouse at the Grand View University campus where Grand View leads Kearney, University of Nebraska Kearney 18 -3 but that score is not indicative.
Tim Johnson along with Jim Miller and what a first half >> Jim: it was great.
Great matches, even low-scoring.
They fought their rear ends off and we had some entertainment going on man.
This could be different but Grand View earned it .
>> Tim: they had a couple of pins and one came after a hard-fought match .
Come from behind, got the pin and then the Heard brothers.
Let's take a look at some highlights.
Right now at 125, game effort by Adonis Lattimore but a big pin by number one ranked tran 01.
>> Jim: he did, he earned that one.
and 133, tran 03 and Hector Serratos.
This is the overtime.
These guys scrapped the whole match.
Hector Serratos comes through with a win.
>> Tim: Carson Taylor, number one ranked , tough match.
He got a win close and at 149 now the start of the Heard brothers.
>> Jim: Darnai Heard gets a fall on the edge but he dominated.
He was a crowd favorite, let me tell you and then his brother E'lan Heard and Cael Robb.
There was an unbelievable: and that was a scrap the whole way.
>> Tim: I'm looking forward to the second half but what a product.
Iowa PBS comes back into college wrestling and we get two of the best small college programs in America.
>> Jim: love it .
And I think we've got five more great matches to go including two number one heavyweights going at it.
>> Tim: there aren't many matches or meets that have number one ranked heavyweights on both teams to end the night and we've got that for you as we get ready for the second half of action.
So here comes Jay Cox out to the center, he is the official tonight and we are going to go to 165.
Where we've got Cam Robinson from Grand View.
>> Jim: he is so tough.
>> Tim: he is ranked number three at 165.
>> Jim: and Garrett Willuweit from Nebraska Kearney, 9 and 3.
Garrett Willuweit is a good kid and ready to go.
Coach really likes him.
Cam Robinson and Iowa State transfer wrestled 149 at Iowa State and now he's a 165.
He is 61 " and is about 165 .
Coach Mitchell set a highly paste match is good for him so that's what he expects.
Here we go.
>> Tim: Cam Robinson out of Newtown, Pennsylvania.
He's 19 and 1 as he mentioned, started at 149 pounds and he's about 165 going up against the replacement Garrett Willuweit in for Trenton Munoz who was sick.
Had a little influenza and couldn't go so he steps in from Hewitt, Wisconsin , Marshfield high school.
He was 14 and 10 is a redshirt.
He's a redshirt freshman in the lineup and on a single leg .
>> Jim: nice scramble.
Robinson got in, Willuweit dives and on the leg trying to hold him up but there's the nice take down and he goes right into a deep ways jam.
>> Jim: this is where Robinson likes to be.
He likes to use as leverage.
He is 61 " --he is 6 foot one and dangerous.
Good on top, likes to tilt you .
That return, Willuweit right back up to the tripod .
That return again from Robinson.
>> Tim: you know, mat returns don't have to be boom to be great and when you can trip them and keep control looking for the cross wrist, always trying to set that up.
>> Jim: I think this is where Robinson wants to be tying up the wrist.
Right here, there it is.
Only one count but that's where he wants to be and there he goes again.
>> Tim: nice job of rolling through by Willuweit.
>> Jim: arm bar by Robinson.
Just 3 - 0.
So far Robinson racks up 1:13 riding time.
Robinson covers.
Up to his feet right away .
Robinson has those long arms, man.
>> Tim: nice job by Willuweit knocking him down to his hips.
Robinson wanting to keep the hips on top .
>> Were to improve, gentleman.
>> Tim: what does Willuweit want to do right here?
>> Jim: there's not a whole lot he can do.
He wants to keep good position .
That was probably the best scenario for him, get a restart.
>> Tim: 26 seconds left in the first period.
3 - 0, 1:45 riding time for Cam Robinson and has not been able to turn a couple of attempts into near fall points.
A good, dogged determination by Willuweit.
>> Jim: 10 seconds ago, Robinson ahead .
Over two minutes of time.
>> Referee: Grand View choice.
>> Jim: Robinson's choice, he goes down.
>> Tim: a good look at Dalton Jensen the former national champion for the Lopers and now the head coach out of Missouri Valley, Iowa and has done a tremendous job , has a desire to get the right back on top .
They were national champions in 22, third last year in 20 to-- 24 and no one has a tougher schedule.
>> Jim: Robinson gets out and shoots immediately on that.
>> Jim: that's what coach Mitchell was talking about, the higher the pace for him the better he thinks so we've seen that on his feet.
>> Tim: when you are coaching, what Cam Robinson did is what you want to see, when you get the escape looking for that opening?
>> Jim: he's good at that, why hold back?
You need to be good on your feet or good or pretty good riding someone 20 or 30 seconds because you're going to have to and you have to be able to get out .
If you want to be a national champion or compete for a title you can't just be good at one thing.
>> Tim: did you do like 10 seconds in those situations?
>> Jim: love those because you're going to be in that situation.
20 seconds to go you have to ride him out to win the match.
So put him in those situations because they are going to be in them.
>> Jim: those guys are either intimidated or motivated .
Let's go.
>> Jim: Robinson right back in, nice take down.
>> Tim: got right in there and did a nice job wrapping up Willuweit.
30 seconds left in the period out in front 7-0 for the Vikings.
The Vikings up 18 -3 after five matches.
We are in match number six of this meet at Dave Sisam Arena.
I love the intimacy, I love the fact that it's packed and I love the fact that I bet most of these fans never miss a home meet.
>> Jim: why would you?
>> Jim: this school is a smaller school, so you know, the football team is here.
They want to be here.
The wrestling team supports the football team and vice versa and so forth another sports.
>> Tim: right in the center of the capital city and 15, 16 years ago there wasn't even a wrestling program and now they are the best in NAIA.
>> Tim: who knew?
Grand View was the best team in the country .
7- 1 escape by Willuweit.
>> Jim: nice shot by Robinson right there.
immediate takedown .
He's looking good, building the lead 7- 1 but he has riding time.
Willuweit has been scrappy, though.
>> Tim: nice job coming to his feet .
Trying to get in on his own ties .
>> Jim: Willuweit is going to try to hold on to the leg but Robinson is so long with power and leverage trying to sneak around.
Willuweit doing a good job, though.
Hoping to get a stalemate but we will see.
That's another takedown.
>> Tim: what he's looking for his control.
When they have control there was an escape right now.
He's not wanting to get majored riding time secured for cam and now he's trying to put an exclamation point on it.
>> Jim: that's what coach Mitchell was saying.
When he goes, he is tough to deal with .
>> Tim: good misdirection , lots of firing.
Good, high pace.
>> Jim: that's what they wanted that's what he's doing.
He has 13 or 14 with riding time and he is still after it .
That's another shot, another takedown.
Doing a nice job trying to hold him off.
15 seconds left .
>> Tim: a nice way to start for the Vikings in the second half of this big meet between the division to power Lopers , Nebraska Kearney and top-ranked Grand View Vikings.
Cam Robinson gets a major decision.
>> Tim: last shot he was in deep and just powers into him , gets his takedown .
14 - 4 win and I think here is where the Lopers try to make a move right now .
We saw his brother and now we have the deal brothers Jacobi and Jacari coming up right after each other.
Now he beat out in a wrestle off Kate and heart to take the spot up 124 because his brother Jacari is back in the line about 184.
Right now we get the deal brothers and they are trying to get the Lopers back into this.
>> Jim: but a tough go.
Alex Reynolds is the 2024 national champion in NAIA so I think we are going to have a really good match .
>> Tim: Alex Reynolds out of Georgia veterans high school.
Dad has Iowa roots out of Martensdale St. Mary's.
He was a NAIA champion last year.
Came from behind to win and he spent time in the lineup not in the lineup because he was behind the national champion before that.
>> Jim: sometimes you just have to wait your turn and keep fighting to get better and then when your chance happens what happens?
He wins a national title because he did the right thing.
Stayed in with good training partners and a good program and the answer many times is not to leave.
>> Tim: you had a lot of guys that stepped in, you knew that they were studs.
Two guys come to your mind that stayed in three or four years and when they got their opportunity, they produce?
>> Jim: 100%.
A guy named John Helgeson comes to mind.
He came out and was not the guy right away but stuck with it.
Third, second, first.
But there was a lot of guys like that that came through over the years and I was there 22 years so you have a lot of guys.
Man, that is satisfying as a coach to see that happen.
And this happened here with Alex Reynolds last year.
>> Tim: I am sitting here with legendary coach , 10 time national champion Jim Miller .
You also now have quite a few guys that are out coaching.
Nick Mitchell being an example but how does that make you feel?
>> Jim: it's great.
You've got Paul Reedy who is an assistant, Nick Mitchell, Eric Keller started as an assistant and doing a great job as a head coach.
Shoot, who was?
>> Tim: Coast Guard.
Top 10 program and at one time we had all those guys on the same coaching staff.
Mitch are and Keller and Bradley.
Sometimes you just don't know.
You look back and say that was a stellar crew.
>> Tim: that's called multiplication, not addition.
You multiplied leadership throughout this nation and it's really satisfying.
They tell you will you retired.
Well yeah but you multiplied .
So I'm sure that you miss coaching as a director of the Dan Gable Museum and Hall of Fame and probably a little different but you're still coaching.
>> Jim: I like it .
>> Tim: your coaching people -- >> Jim: nice shot by Jacobi Deal but Reynolds fights it off and he's looking to go around.
>> Tim: Jacobi like his brother comes from Durham, North Carolina.
12 -- Tech , was an All-American and has been kind of buried in the depth of Nebraska Kearney wrestling.
>> Jim: I think we've got two really good athletes here and I think Nebraska knows we need this match.
We need to get back in this match, we need to win, we need some momentum.
>> Tim: one of the great people in our sport , communicators in our sport, PA announcer is an all-around historians Jason Bryant just texted me and said don't forget about Sean right --Sean White at Bonavista .
>> Jim: [ laughter ] oh yes, there's plenty out there.
Brandon Brissett, I've seen a lot of those guys at the national duels last week.
It's been very cool.
>> Tim: you had a lifeline, my lifeline was Jason Bryant .
He comes through with a lot of information.
>> Jim: nobody knows more information than that guy.
And Kyle, he's the man.
>> Tim: these guys are so important.
I have to give a shout out to my guy JD a former member of the Lopers and he's doing so much , went over to Nebraska, wrestled for the Lopers and along with all the guys he just invest in our sport.
I know he's probably watching and cheering on his Lopers.
>> Jim: Jacobi Deal and Alex Reynolds like we thought.
Head-to-head scrapping but neither could really gain an advantage.
Reynolds gets an escape but that's it.
>> Tim: Jacobi was ranked at 184 so he is not ranked yet with the new rankings in his brother taking over 84 and of course one of the six number one ranked Grand View Vikings.
13-4 on the year for him .
>> Jim: at halftime I asked an assistant and set I'd like to come into practice and watch the Heard brothers.
Here we go.
Nice go behind and he does not score, my goodness.
They want to see-- that was close.
Great job by deal going around but just as he's about to get the take on Reynolds, does a somersault to avoid it.
Let's see the replay here.
There he is, looking to put him down but Reynolds right away hits a somersault so I guess they will have to look and say was that a takedown that was long enough or what?
>> Tim: maybe we will be able to go back a little further.
That was quite an action right there.
a lot of action going on and we will take it a little further back.
>> Tim: right there is what they are challenging.
>> Jim: I can see a takedown.
>> Tim: but it wasn't called.
If it had been called I don't think there would be any argument but it wasn't so there has to be indisputable evidence and the official is looking not at what you just saw.
Slow-motion go behind .
The somersault, now nothing and then again here it comes.
Let him go, see if he goes around.
Right there.
What do you think?
>> Tim: I think he could've called it .
That was great action.
But you know, it's going to stand.
I was going to say I'm not always right but I'm going to try to always be real.
>> Jim: that was tremendous entertainment.
That would've been big right at the end of the period.
My goodness.
>> Tim: these are two great looking athletes, coach.
>> Jim: now Jacobi Deal goes down and if Reynolds things he has a chance he's going to try to get a point because nothing has been solved on the feet.
Deal really needs to score and not give up his riding time if he's going to win this match.
I really think this is a match that Nebraska Kearney is going to need to have to have any kind of chance.
>> Tim: that's a lot of pressure on the head pushing forward.
>> Jim: here's what I said.
If you are good on your feet you have to be good in all positions and this is where Reynolds is.
Got away in six seconds.
Never gave up a take down and now he's trying to ride him out.
54 seconds, great job by Jacobi Deal not giving up that point.
So it's anybody's match right now.
>> Tim: coming down to the takedown.
40 seconds left in regulation.
We've already had one over time.
Sudden victory the only win for the Lopers so far with Hector Serratos getting the takedown and the sudden victory win at 1:33.
Now the opportunity to get a takedown here at the end of regulation or a sudden victory.
>> Jim: like you said, sometimes it comes down to executing when you're tired.
Nice shot.
Deal fought him off and takes a shot now.
The go behind by Reynolds , two seconds.
>> Tim: and we are going to sudden victory.
Good action at the end.
here we go.
>> Jim: we have had some great matches .
>> Tim: it's not indicative of the fight.
He got the ankle.
Comes across.
That was a gut check.
That's impressive.
That was impressive.
>> Jim: he didn't really penetrate that far but he is so strong he pulled it in any way .
So strong here.
He pulls it in any way and gets to the double.
There's the double.
Man, that was a gutsy finish .
That was impressive.
>> Tim: location, and their parents are excited.
They are halfway home now, Durham, North Carolina all the way to Des Moines and now Jacari coming on against Jameel Coles.
From Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
He's 11-4, Jameel Coles is.
>> Jim: All-American last year.
>> Tim: out of Goodland, Kansas.
>> Jim: now Jacari last week be the number three and the number five.
>> Tim: he was a national champion but it has been two years since he wrestled.
Injuries and eligibility issues, he is back on the mat the last three weeks for the first time in two years.
>> Jim: coach has to be excited about that .
>> Tim: he was 3 and 0 and be the number three and five ranked guys.
>> Jim: how would you like to go in and watch the Heard brothers practice together and maybe Jacobi and Jacari?
Maybe they don't let them wrestle each other but man, I bet scraps at home, then parents probably had to move some stuff out of the way.
But that's wrestling.
You don't need a whole lot to do it .
You start doing it when you're a little kids sometimes and a lot of times the best partner is a brother.
And maybe a sister now.
Deal doing a nice job pulling him back trying to pull him in the middle but Coles is so long, it's hard to sweep .
We will see if he can get it done.
Jacari looking for a takedown, nice job.
He does capture it, yes.
And that was not easy.
>> Tim: that is knowing where you're at.
The edge of the Jay Cox--the edge of the mat and all you need is the other angle.
>> Jim: excellent job, big takedown.
Coles to his feet gets his escape, 3 - 1 .
Clock down to one minute, first period.
3 - 1 Jacari Deal.
Nebraska Kearney .
His brother just got their second win at 174 and I'm sure he wants to get back home with a win .
But Jameel Coles may have other plans here .
>> Referee: Hands, guys .
>> Tim: 20 seconds left, 3 -1 on the strength of the takedown by Jameel Coles and the escape by Jameel Coles is where we are at as we get to the end of the first period.
Can he get to the finish?
Enough time?
>> Jim: five seconds, Coles doing a good job.
>> Tim: good job by Jameel Coles knowing where he was at and how long he had to hop .
>> Jim: another takedown, that's a whole different scenario.
Here we are only 3 -1.
>> Tim: second year into the three point takedown to did you like them?
>> Jim: I wasn't sure at first but I am kind of liking it.
>> Tim: I like rewarding the offensive wrestlers.
>> Jim: nice mat return.
Remember how important it was at the last match not to give up -- >> Tim: and good job by Jameel Coles getting to his feet .
Now he's got to be the aggressor .
The deal brothers didn't start wrestling until high school.
>> Jim: whose the high school coach?
I hope they are watching.
Great job.
There's a lot of kids walking down them halls that could be great but they don't know it yet.
They may not have been in the room or sometimes they were in the room and you're not good early.
>> Tim: you and I were coaching high school at the same time.
Mount Vernon, you at Charles City.
We were young and one thing I would be doing is asking for more space, more mat space and getting more kids out there.
>> Jim: sometimes it's a matter of sticking with it and all of a sudden good things start to happen.
Deal deep on the signal in the same position as he was in the first.
He got a trip in the first period but not this time.
And Coles steps all the way over .
Kind of unorthodox but he is long and dangerous and now Deal trying to hold on for a stalemate.
>> Tim: that looked painful but didn't look like it bothered Jameel Coles.
Not many people could've done that.
>> Jim: here's a replay, jumping all the way over .
He held onto the ankle otherwise he would've scored.
Nice go behind.
>> Jim: his hand was down, that's a big takedown with seven seconds left.
>> Tim: when you can get them taken down and--did they take it away?
>> Jim: I think we are going to review.
>> Tim: I think his hands were down.
And, really nice job .
>> Jim: here he is, take a look again .
Coles shoots, Deal goes around .
>> Tim: but the call on the mat is three .
It's harder to change it when you did call it or not call it.
That's close .
That would be a big takedown.

Yeah, we were talking about , I was out at Norwalk high school last night visiting with the coach.
A tremendous space.
Three mats , lots of kids, girls practice first and then the guys are in there.
a lot of coaches.
I mean, you developed that practice of getting as many coaches.
No egos, you want as many coaches working--I was really impressed with the Jake Brown and the program he's trying to build out there.
we are going to look at these schedules we have coming up.
Loris University , William Penn versus Grand View right back here in this arena in February.
>> Jim: you would be looking at major decision territory.
But Coles you can see that he picked it up here.
He knows he has some points to make up .
Right on edge, out of bounds.
>> Referee: Neutral.
>> Tim: 1:09 .
>> Jim: here's the replay.
Has a single, Coles is a handful.
Nice shot by him.
>> Tim: nice job dropping down by Jacari Deal looking to come around and comes up, here we go.
>> Jim: this would be major decision territory here, 7-2 right now.
This could be something--I love that he is still trying to score and not just hold on defensively.
But Coles is trying to put him in jeopardy.
Deal holding on for the ankle for dear life .
>> Tim: you are never going to finish clean on Jameel Coles.
>> Jim: this guy is hard to score on and he goes the hole match.
I love that.
No quit here.
12 seconds left, still 7- 2 .
Good scrap, going to end right here, looks like 7- 2 .
Jacari Deal.
Both brothers win.
>> Tim: so you have the Heard brothers on the Vikings side and the Deal brothers.
Ceiling up the deal at 174 and 184.
They were a big deal for the Lopers.
It was important as you said for a lot of reasons.
Momentum, the field, all of it.
>> Jim: here's the score.
Deal, his first takedown.
Scores on the edge , gets out to the lead , ends up winning the match .
And you know, even though it has kind of gotten out of hand you won a your third match and you have a couple more to go here.
Especially like we said, two number one heavyweights .
Here's GK , coach.
The national champ.
Maybe I just call him the champ.
The champ is coming out.
Jacob Awiszus ?
>> Tim: Awiszus.
In for the injured Jackson Kinsella and he is the division to 197 wrestler and he couldn't go tonight so Jacob Awiszus from Nebraska and a state runner-up a couple years ago, in Nebraska.
Going up against GK the national champion.
He beat his teammate 4 -2 and defended the national champion for first place.
>> Jim: and he sing the national anthem.
I tell you, Owen out of Kansas coming back home to sing the national anthem.
Like I said, I like that little country right there.
if there was a walkout song I would probably be a little more country that I am heavy metal, anyway.
>> Tim: GK, San Diego, California.
You would probably be a Motown guy.
>> Jim: no doubt about it.
They would have to put the needle on the 45 for us to have a walkout.
>> Tim: nothing yet.
Awiszus doing a good job holding him off so far .
I've seen GK in nationals and when he gets going-- there it is.
That was impressive.
I was just saying that happens.
When he goes, he goes.
>> Jim: you look at the name and it was so nice of him to say just call me GK.
>> Tim: that's what he likes.
Awiszus team.
-- Garavous Kouekabakilaho We set it once.
14 and 2 ranked number one as a junior.
We've been saying ranked number one a lot.
He is the fifth in the Grand View lineup and we have one more , Greg Hagan a local guy from Des Moines.
Coming up to try to finish things but he is going up against a guy that grew up not too far from here, Crew Howard from Clarinda, Iowa.
We been looking forward to that all night but we have not been bored waiting.
>> Jim: we have really had some great matches.
Throughout the lineup .
And you know, Nebraska Kearney, they come to wrestle.
Even some of the matches they lost they came to wrestle and had some injuries and backups but they have come to scrap.
I love it.
>> Referee: Red defers .
>> Jim: GK goes down for Grand View.
>> Jim: you know, clubs have really grown since you and I were wrestling.
Your colleague just texted me and said his daughter is in the Norwalk kids club and that is led by a former four -time state champion Jake Marlon .
But the club , the club's all over the place and really popped up.
>> Jim: and not just the boys but the girls.
Our girls wrestling is just on fire.
I love the growth of girls wrestling in the state in the nation.
>> Tim: fastest growing sport and they announced there's going to be an NCAA championship in 2026 for the women .
That's going to be something else.
7- 1 .
One minute left in the second period.
GK for the Vikings out in front.
>> Jim: nice single, goes right to the finish .
10 - 1 now .
Looks like he's going to try to build his lead.
Think he's feeling it .
>> Tim: Tim Johnson alongside Jim Miller .
Iowa PBS college wrestling back after about a 12 year hiatus.
>> Jim: how great is that?
So many people to say we are so excited.
Tremendous to work with.
>> Tim: our producer and director Andrea Cole.
So great to work with and Andrew the general manager here tonight.
Came out so excited.
>> Jim: how awesome was that?
>> Tim: all they want to do is improve the product and we just got going now.
We are often running.
>> Jim: already next Tuesday we will be back .
>> Tim: Laurus college, that is a rivalry.
>> Tim: football and wrestling .
Going to tried to pack that into Cedar Rapids and bring a lot of wrestlers.
It's going to be a big night on the campus of Coe next Tuesday night 7:00 o'clock central time live on Iowa PBS.
>> Jim: 13 - 3.
I love it when you finish right away.
>> Tim: came right across the chop on the neck.
>> Jim: kind of putting on a takedown clinic.
Kind of shows off all the things he can get done on his feet.
The number three, that finishes it off.
GK, the number one ranked 197 pounder .
And on a low single, drives to the takedown.
Drives to the takedown.
Playing to the crowd yelling GK, GK.

Thank you to all of our viewers for tuning in.
You have been treated to a tremendous show and now for the grand finale , I would say the main fight on the card.
>> Jim: the main event.
These are two great wrestlers, two big , strong athletes that know how to win.
Both ranked number one in their division.
I've been looking forward to this one.
Here we go .
Greg Hagan , Crew Howard for Nebraska Kearney, and Iowa boy and here we go.
I don't think this will be a pushing and shoving heavyweight type of match.
There may be pushing and shoving but they are going to be trying to score.
>> Referee: Got a hand in the headgear.
We are all right.
>> Jim: my goodness.
Pretty physical here, man.
I think it was accidental but they butted heads.
>> Referee: Fingers, men.
>> Tim: Crew Howard , his best finish was fourth in the state and I think he got there weighing 220 and now he's 265 or so.
Done a really good job.
Third place at under 23's, 4.
0 student, academic All-American .
Greg Hagan, four - time finalist , 2023 national champion my goodness.
State champion >> Tim: I was looking at the Hall of Fame.
Three time national champion.
He looks a little bit like him and one of the greats in 2012, 13 and 14 .
Probably was one of the guys that established the program of national champions with Nick Mitchell.
>> Tim: yes he did.
>> Tim: shot by Hagan.
Look at these guys.
They are wrestling like some of the little guys did.
Jumped over Crew Howard, my goodness.
Don't get hurt here.
This is great.
These guys know how to wrestle, man.
>> Jim: Greg Hagan out of Clarinda.
4.
2 cumulative grade point average.
>> Tim: that's like ours, put them together.
>> Tim: we don't know nothing but we are here and how blessed are we to have this opportunity to have this type of wrestling?
America needs wrestling, we are seeing wide.
The guts, the gumption and the grittiness to grind out a good seven minute match, the same stuff that it takes to grind out a good, long, productive life.
I tell program leaders, it's good to know your CEOs and businesses because instead of investing $20,000 and headhunters, just invest in wrestling because you're going to have the best workers come out of any wrestling program.
>> Jim: the best life lessons board in the world.
You learn to pick yourself up and go again when things don't go right.
Grittiness and determination like you said TJ, obviously it's the best board in the world but you learn so much.
>> Tim: 0 -0 first period and here comes Hagan up and trying to get away .
Crew Howard on top.
Third in the under 23 trials.
Crew Howard has aspirations even beyond college and you can see why.
A four -time All-American national champion last year coming around for a big reversal.
>> Jim: that was athletic heavyweights.
>> Tim: it was 4-2 last year.
Greg Hagan over Crew Howard in a meet .
His brother Carson is a football player here and his younger brother is that Dowling is a heavyweight.
>> Jim: just like we been talking family, family family.
Most of the time you have multiple kids, multiple wrestlers.
Sometimes the dad, the cousins, the uncles.
>> Tim: it's a family investment.
Not everyone can sit in the stands from 9:00 - 9:00 not knowing when your son is going to wrestle.
The big escape with 35 seconds left for crew .
16 and 0 , Crew Howard undefeated so far this year.
>> Jim: pretty impressive.
>> Tim: and Greg Hagan, 18 and 1. he was a national champion in 23.
Last year had an injury default in the finals so he has been a three time runner-up and a national champion.
>> Jim: we talked about the Kearney schedule but Granville also -- Grand View also.
Here's Hagan.
Nice roller right to a reversal.
You can tell he's done that before .
>> Jim: Grand View went out to Reno, tough tournament.
A lot of Division I teams.
Hagan won that tournament actually .
1:35 in the third period .
No stall calls.
>> Tim: both of them staying right in the middle, coach.
>> Jim: here we go, a minute left.
>> Tim: number one in Division II , Crew Howard out of Nebraska Kearney and number one and NAIA out of Grand View , Greg Hagan.
The football team is getting behind them getting going.
40 seconds.
Can the crowd bring them home?
Or will we have our third overtime?
>> Jim: we could.
The other two, Nebraska Kearney has won a.
There's a single by Howard, nice job.
Big takedown.
Hagan like an elevator and it looked like-- >> Tim: did not work.
Crew Howard if he can hold on will stay undefeated for the Nebraska Kearney Lopers and like you said, the score is not indicative .
6-4 in matches and that's a lot better of a ride home.
Like you said.
So Crew Howard out of Clarinda, Iowa comes back to Iowa .
Two great sportsmen hugging each other and great effort.
Howard gets the win, 27 - 12 is the final score.
>> Jim: big effort both teams man, I loved it .
>> Tim: Grand View wins 27 - 12 over Nebraska 20 here at the Fieldhouse.
>> Jim: crew gets in on a single, Hagan tries the elevator here and breaks it and gets the score for the winning takedown.
>> Tim: like you said a better ride home and a good defense at home for Grand View Vikings to >> Jim: and the crowd, we had a very entertaining meet for everyone who came out.
>> Tim: next Tuesday, January 21, Jim and I will be at EV Fieldhouse where Coe hosts Loras live .
>> Jim: your alma mater .
>> Tim: so I look forward to going home myself and seeing a great match.
The final score, Grand View 27.
Kearney , Nebraska, 12.
