My family is originally from Mexico but we live here now.

And, in Mexico, we have the best food!

Today for lunch we're having tacos, my favorite!

Then this afternoon, I'll be performing a traditional dance from Mexico in front of the whole school.

I'm super excited but also a little nervous, so wish me luck!

I love piñatas.

They're so colorful and they're always filled with surprises.

For hundreds of years, piñatas have been an important part of Latin American culture.

Most piñatas today are filled with candy.

But, let's see what this one is filled with.

Oh, wow!

Fruit?

What a delicious and juicy treat!

Now, let's see what's inside piñata number 3.

Books?

That's interesting.

Let me see.

Wait!

These are books of poems.

I love poems!

Poems are different from stories.

Poems can be about anything.

They can have a lot of words, or hardly any words at all.

Some poems have words that rhyme, and others don't.

Poems can be about real-life things, they can be about make believe, and they can also be about feelings, ideas, and emotions.

A person who writes poems is called a poet.

The poems I'm going to share with you were all written by José Chavez.

The poems in this book also have pictures, or illustrations.

The artist who created the beautiful drawings is Aydee Lopez Martinez.

The title of the book of poems is "Little Stars and Cactus," and it's about Latin American culture.

The first poem is called "Fresh Nopalitos."

Nopalitos is a Spanish word for prickly pear cactus.

Did you know you can eat a cactus?

Not the outside of the cactus, of course.

That would be painful!

But, you can eat the inside of a cactus, as long as it's cooked and prepared properly.

It's very delicious!

Let's read and find out more.

(reads) "When winter becomes spring, "we pick nopales in the desert.

"Mami and Papi cut off the cactus pads "that look like ears and put them in a fruit basket.

"Abuelita removes the spines from each piece "and cooks them with egg, tomato, "onion, and jalapeño slices.

"I can't wait to taste tender nopalitos "with homemade corn tortillas.

She always says, 'A full stomach makes a happy heart.'"

Okay, let's read one more!

This poem is about my favorite meal.

It's called: "Chile Verde Stew."

(reads) "Abuelita's eyes are as bright "as the green chiles she cooks in her stew.

"The aroma of onion, tomato, "and roasted garlic fills the kitchen.

"A small radio shouts norteña music "and offers more spice to the flavorful air.

"We dance a polka adding rhythm to the bubbles in the olla.

"At dinner, her stew is a mix of flavors, music, dance, and family."

Is anyone else feeling hungry?

I know I am!

There were three Spanish words in that poem and one in the title!

Did you notice?

Let's see what they mean.

Chile verde is a delicious dish that means green chili.

Abuelita is a grandmother.

Norteña is a music from northern Mexico.

I have an idea!

I want to write my own poem.

Maybe you can try and become a poet, too!

This kind of poem is called a shape poem.

What that means is the words we write will be in the shape of what we're writing about.

The first step is to decide on the topic of the poem.

Hm, let's see.

When I think of birthday parties, I think of piñatas.

So, first, draw the shape of a piñata!

I just love to dance!

Dancing is a big part of celebrations from many cultures around the world, especially Latin America.

My family is from El Salvador, a country in Central America.

That's a very beautiful place with delicious food and wonderful people who speak Spanish.

People from El Salvador dance to a really fun type of music called cumbia.

(upbeat accordion music) ♪ Today, we're going to learn more about a cultural dance called folklorico.

Folk-lor-ee-ko.

In many communities, people learn this beautiful dance and even dress up in the traditional outfits.

Oh, wait!

That reminds me.

I have something I want to show you!

I'll put it up on the screen.

(upbeat guitar music) - [Narrator] Folklorico is a festive, colorful, and cultural dance with origins in Mexico.

The dances encompass the history and traditions of the people who lived in the region where their dances originated.

Folklorico is known for its fast footwork, tapping, stomping, and colorful dresses flowing to the rhythm of the music.

Folklorico celebrates the culture of Latin America and keeps its history alive.

♪ - Wow!

That was amazing!

Those dancers were incredible!

So many twirls!

I loved what they were wearing.

So colorful!

Well, we're in for quite a treat because our school's Folklorico Dance Team is performing today, and Eddie is the star of the show.

I can't wait to see it!

(horn honks) (school bell ringing) - If I could get off this wall, I would be so dancing right now!

I would salsa.

I would cha-cha.

I would merengue.

I would rhumba!

But, since it takes two feet to tango, I guess I'll just have to keep the beat.

(rhythmic wood-tapping beat) Meanwhile, let's go to the outdoor amphitheater and watch Eddie's performance.

I saw him practicing earlier.

Welcome to the performance!

I'm going to do a Mexican Hat Dance.

It's also known as Jarabe Tapatio.

It's a traditional dance that's been performed for a hundred years.

That's enough of me talking.

Isn't it fun to learn about different cultures?

Today we did just that!

And, we also learned about poems.

Poems can be written in many different ways.

They can rhyme or not rhyme.

They can be long or short.

They can take the shape of many different objects.

They can even be in different languages.

And then, we learned about types of dancing styles in Latin America.

We watched a performance from the beautiful Ballet Folklorico.

(upbeat mariachi music) (claps) ♪ (claps) ♪ Fiesta Day is just one of the many ways you can learn about, and celebrate, Latin American culture.

And, there are so many different international countries, each with their own languages, food, music, dancing, and ways of living.

It's so much fun to explore!

I hope you never stop learning and discovering the world around you!

Los poemas son diferentes a las historias... los poemas pueden ser sobre cualquier cosa.

Pueden tener muchas palabras o casi ninguna.

Algunos poemas tienen palabras que riman y otros poemas no.

Los poemas pueden ser sobre cosas de la vida real, pueden ser sobre fantasías y también pueden ser sobre nuestros sentimientos, ideas y emociones.

Una persona que escribe poemas se llama poeta.

Los poemas que voy a compartir con ustedes fueron escritos por José Chávez.

Los poemas de este libro también tienen imágenes o ilustraciones.

"El aroma de cebolla, tomate, y ajo rostizado, "llena la cocina.

"Un radio pequeño toca música norteña "y ofrece sabor al ambiente.

"Bailamos una polka añadiendo ritmo "a las burbujas en la olla.

"En la cena, su guisado es una mezcla de sabores, música, baile, y familia."
