Using Cutouts to Enhance Literacy

See how combining cutouts with reading can increase engagement and strengthen literacy.
Combining an activity with reading is a great way to make it more engaging. At the Rutherford County Technology Engagement Center, students use a computer-controlled cutting machine to cut out items related to the book they are reading. Young readers can use scissors to imitate this activity at home and create cutouts tied to what they are reading.

That sound fun?
(graphic whooshing) Yeah.
One of Noah's favorite books is called "Duck Soup."
It's the story of Maxwell Duck making a delicious vegetable soup.
We practice media literacy at the Rutherford County Technology Engagement Center.
- So which one should we pick?
- A potato.
- Okay.
- A potato.
We are here today to try the computer-controlled cutting machine for an activity that compliments this book.
To reinforce what young readers are absorbing, these high-tech machines allow kids to come up with an idea, make a plan, and design a variety of objects.
In this case, Noah is creating vegetables for his own duck soup.
Parents can access this machine for free or check their local library for this technology.
Alright, put it on the stove.
(whimsical music) This kind of technology encourages Noah to access, analyze, evaluate, create, and act using all forms of communication.
- All done.
