Using Music & Video for Literacy
4/29/2024 | 1m 4sVideo has Closed Captions
Combining music, video and literacy can make learning to read more engaging for kids.
Music can be used to help kids master the alphabet, practice the sounds of letters, develop phonemic awareness, and build phonics skills and vocabulary. Using technology teaches kids how to navigate software – even commands as simple as “stop” and “play." Combine these skills by having your child make a recording singing one of their favorite songs; add pictures to make a personal music video.

My son Brady is on the spectrum.
We homeschool him and he loves to read.
Brady also loves using technology to make videos.
We find ways to combine those two things to strengthen his literacy skills.
There is a reason that most kids know the alphabet at a young age, and Brady is no exception.
The tune, the rhythm, even the rhyme, helps ingrain the letters in kids' brains.
Today, Brady is recording himself singing one of his favorite songs and then adding pictures to make his own music video.
- [Brady] Yeah, but that's not a diamond.
- [Brady's Mom] Music can be used to help Brady master the alphabet, practice the sounds of letters, build phonic skills and vocabulary.
It's fun for both of us to combine music and videos to help with his literacy skills.
