Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipmy name is Max fenning I UTM pronouns I am a gay man 20 years old and I am the founder and president of prism I think that coming out in the space that I'm in was comparatively easy going that I was really welcomed with open arms that I felt Freer but I've also experienced you know my fair share of homophobia arguably more recently when uh you know as I've gotten into this work I've experienced the most horrific and horrendous rhetoric in actions against my community and myself and it's been exhausting prism is a youth-led non-profit we work to expand access to LGBT inclusive education and Sexual Health Resources for young people in South Florida we never intended to get into policy work and it was really spurred by this Infamous don't say gay or don't say LGBT law passing its first house committee that was so uniquely within the work that we do so we went up to Tallahassee and then we went up again and then again fighting against this anti-lgbt legislation that we're seeing specifically that's impacting education and young people's access to healthcare and then also in local school boards in Palm Beach Broward and Miami-Dade County where we've seen attacks against our community and we've also seen efforts to uplift and support our community and really fighting for policies and practices and procedures that are going to create inclusive schools and inclusive curriculum for students there is such a rich history of queer people in our country in the world so many amazing scientific advancements that they've made so many cultural and artistic breakthroughs that have been spearheaded by the LGBT community and that's worth recognizing and in particular it's worth recognizing in the context of who we are to be told that the history of your community doesn't matter enough to be in a classroom that it's inappropriate for kids that your community and who you are well beyond what you do in the bedroom is inappropriate is to adult when I know that I was a queer kid once and I know how much I benefited from inclusive curriculum in an inclusive school that made me feel seen that made me feel heard and to see that Stripped Away to see that treated as cancerous to see that treated as a social contagion an infection that needs to be eradicated from this Earth is so so debilitating young queer people are scared of what this means for their safety their physical safety in schools to be able to to witness history in the making history that shouldn't be in the making right now of their communities being mocked and ridiculed and erased is terrifying my message to parents of lgbtq plus kids is I know it's looking real scary but we need you we need voices we need people to show up for our queer people our young queer people who can't leave the state and you're the perfect person to Champion that
