Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipI'm Lisa McCourt I'm president of P flag Broward and the awesomely proud mom of a remarkable thriving transgender daughter tally was always a good good child there was never any Rebellion any anger but there was just a part of her that I felt I could have never quite touched she was always very within her own own world but once she came out I've been able to reach my child in a way that I was never able to before she's blossomed she's herself she's funny she's comfortable in her skin she's who she's meant to be in the world and it's just been the most beautiful transformation to see her be able to shed all that armor that was keeping her really alone Talia is 25 now she came out at 22. and I did have a lot of sadness to overcome a lot of grief purely for the fact that I was suddenly aware that my daughter had been alone in this for so long but I understand in her journey that there was just a lot of figuring out who she was she didn't have the information that's even known just these few years later she didn't really understand what was going on with her and until she did she couldn't share it but that's what broke my heart was that she was alone in this journey for so long that's why I'm passionate about education so it may work as president of P flag I'm also a co-chair of the safe to be me Coalition in the school systems I see families living in fear of openly supporting their children living in fear of doing what they know to be the best thing for their children there are actual measures that can be taken against families who are are only doing what they know to be the most loving thing for their child and that's causing a lot of turmoil in the communities that I serve and I understand that there are some parents who feel that they need to protect their children from this exposure to the realities of there being lgbtq people on the planet and I can only assume that that means that you feel that there's a chance that your child will be influenced to adopt this lifestyle to choose this lifestyle no one's choosing this lifestyle no one's choosing to be a part of a horrifically marginalized Society your child is what your child is and and teaching them showing them to be understanding and respectful of all people the way they are is doing them a great service Talia and her boyfriend and absolutely beautiful lovely transgender gentleman who's part of my family now will be relocating to New York with our blessing there's just enough culturally that's going against them why would they choose to live in a place that is going backwards instead of forward in terms of inclusivity and acceptance for all people I feel like this whole issue with uh transphobia it's going one day we're going to look back it's going to be as absurd as segregated water fountains that's truly where we have to be headed I feel even though there's ample evidence that we're having some setbacks right now we just have to keep our eye on the big picture and hold the vision and and keep educating people so that we can have a better future for all people
