The greatest amphibious invasion in history began from the air. Just after midnight on June 6, 1944, the first of 24,000 paratroopers dropped behind enemy lines in Normandy. The British 6th Airborne quickly seized key bridges over the Orne and Dives rivers, but low clouds scattered the 16,000 men of the American 101st and 82nd Airborne across the Cotentin Peninsula.
