Did you know that every year millions of tons of plastic end up in the ocean weighing the same as thousands of school buses?

That's not okay.

No bueno.

Fish and whales and all the creatures of the sea shouldn't be swimming around in our garbage.

I wanna help and be a part of the solution.

I hope we get a good turnout of volunteers to help clean up the trash on the beach.

It's really important to care about the environment and to do something about it.

(playful horn honks) (school bell rings) - [Barry] Ahoy, maties!

Before we go to our first class, I have some classified information to share with you.

I just learned something about my family history.

¡Mi familia!

Although I come from a long line of proud school bells my great-great- great-great-grandfather, was the ship's bell to the famous nautical expedition, the HMS Challenger way back in 1872.

The Challenger was the very first scientific exploration of the ocean.

No wonder I've been fascinated with the deep blue sea since I was a baby bell.

It's been passed down through generations, rooted deep in my ringer.

(ship's bell rings) Oh!

I almost forgot.

It's time to get to class to discover more about the oceans.

Head over to Miss D's classroom, ya land lubbers!

(bell ringing) (playful horn honking) - Here, fishy-fishy!

Come get your food.

Oh, hi!

I'm Miss D, and I'm just feeding my fish.

Aren't they cool?

Hmm.

(water bubbling sounds) What are you trying to tell me?

Hab-i-tat.

Habitat!

Oh!

You want me to teach the students about habitats!

(splashing sounds) A habitat is another word for a place or an environment where an animal or a plant lives and grows.

It's their home.

For fish, their natural habitat is water.

They can live in the ocean, in a lake, a river, a stream, or even an aquarium.

But, the ocean is where most of the fish in the world live.

The ocean is a very important habitat on our planet.

It's home to thousands of different kinds of species like fish, sharks, whales, dolphins, lobsters, shrimp, eels, seals, coral, kelp, crabs, seahorses, and many, many more.

Speaking of seahorses, the title of today's story is called "Sandy the Seahorse", written by Ed Kurtz with illustrations by Karolina Dziewa.

(reads) "S is for Sandy the Seahorse.

"She lives in warm ocean waters.

"Sandy looks like a horse, but she does not have legs.

"How does she move in the water?

"She has a small fin on her back.

"She uses this fin to move.

"She also has small fins behind her eyes.

"She uses these fins to steer.

"Sandy's eyes can move in two different directions "at the same time!

"She can see everything around her.

"Sandy is not a very good swimmer.

"When she gets hungry, she winds her tail around a plant.

"Then, she waits for little shrimp to swim past.

"She sucks them up with her snout like a vacuum.

Mmm!

"Oh, no!

Here comes a wave.

Hold on tight, Sandy."

The ocean is filled with creatures like Sandy.

So are lakes, rivers, and streams.

It's our responsibility to take care of these natural habitats.

We live on an amazing planet, but it needs our help, and so do the creatures who depend on it.

(bell rings) Oh!

There's Barry the Bell sending us on our next adventure!

(playful horn honking) (bell ringing) - Batten down the hatches.

Listen to this: The HMS Challenger voyage changed the course of scientific history forever!

Together with the ship's captain and the crew, my great-great-great-great grandfather, traveled almost 80,000 miles, measured the ocean's depths, and discovered 4,700 new species of marine life.

That's a lot of fish in the sea, if you know what I mean.

(bell rings) (playful horn honking) ♪ - [Eddie] Okay.

The ocean is very important for our planet.

It's home to thousands and thousands of species.

We've all gotta do our part to keep these ecosystems clean.

- You got that right!

It would make my great-great-great-great grandfather so proud.

- Hey, that gives me an idea.

- Okay.

Let's pretend that we're on the HMS Challenger.

You call out some of the sea creatures that were discovered on the expedition and we'll mimic their movements.

- Aye-aye, Captain.

Let's do it.

Okay.

Swish like a seahorse!

(horse neighing) Jiggle like a jellyfish.

(water bubbling sounds) Pinch like a lobster.

♪ Flap like a stingray.

(flapping sounds) Crawl like a crab.

(twinkling sounds) Wiggle like an eel.

(low humming sounds) Bite like a shark.

(chomp!)

Blow up like a puffer fish.

♪ Breach like a whale.

(splashing sounds) - Wow.

Your great-great-great-great grandfather must have had so much fun discovering all those sea creatures.

I wonder how many more there are.

- Well, the library is the right place to find out.

Everybody, todos, come on into the library and let's research the ocean with Miss D!

(bell rings) (playful horn honking) - [Miss D] Look at this globe.

It's a miniature model of planet Earth.

All the green parts are land, and the blue parts are water.

The big blue patches are the earth's ocean.

(twinkly music) The ocean takes up 71% of our planet.

That means if the earth was a pizza, this much of it would be an ocean!

(chomp!)

(splashing sounds) The deepest part of the ocean is over 10,000 feet.

That's more than two miles deep!

Or, 28 football fields!

(referee's whistle blowing) (crowd cheering sounds) The ocean is important to us for so many reasons.

It provides us with food, it regulates the earth's climate, and it gives most of the oxygen we breathe.

Hundreds of thousands of creatures live in this habitat.

It's also fun to swim and surf in!

Kowabunga!

(ocean waves crashing) But, our ocean is in trouble.

So much plastic ends up in the ocean every day that it's formed an island called the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.

And it's two times the size of Texas, one of the two largest states in the country.

If this continues, soon there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish!

It's up to us to help our planet and help our ocean.

(splashing sounds) We can do this by using less plastic products when possible, recycling, and organizing and attending beach cleanups.

If you don't live by an ocean, you can help clean up near lakes, rivers, and streams.

(bell rings) That reminds me!

I still need to sign up for Eddie's beach cleanup.

(playful horn honking) (bell rings) - That means "all hands on deck."

(ship's bell ringing) Let's head back to Miss D's galley and recap what we learned today!

As my great-great-great-great grandfather always said, "May the wind be at your back, and land ho-ooo!"

(bell rings) (playful horn honking) - Just like we wouldn't throw trash in this aquarium, we need to keep our ocean habitats healthy.

Remember, a habitat is a natural place where plants and animals live.

What are you trying to tell me?

Hab-i-tat.

The ocean is habitat to thousands of different kinds of species.

Like Sandy the Seahorse.

Throughout hundreds of years, many explorations and discoveries have been made about the ocean.

- The HMS Challenger voyage traveled almost 80,000 miles, measured the ocean's depths, and discovered 4,700 new species of marine life.

- But, our oceans are in trouble because of all the garbage and waste that ends up in them.

So much plastic ends up in the ocean every day that it's formed an island called the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.

And, it's two times the size of Texas.

Even if you don't live near an ocean, you can do your part: help pick up, throw away and recycle trash that you find near any body of water.

It could be a stream, a river, a lake, or even a puddle.

The earth is our habitat, and it's our job to keep it clean.

(bell rings) Oh, there's Barry.

It must be time for the beach cleanup!

(playful horn honking) (bell ringing) - Alright, people.

Let's get on the right track and join Eddie on the beach.

It's time to clean up!

(ship's bell ringing) Yep!

I run a tight ship just like my great-great-great-great grandfather.

Look at all this trash we've collected.

This would've gone right into the ocean and added to the Great Pacific Garbage patch.

I feel really good about helping fix the problems the ocean is facing.

Imagine if everyone did their part!

I bet we could make sure that there would always be more fish than garbage in our oceans, rivers, lakes, and streams.

(playful horn honking) - Now, let's go in español!

Acabo de enterarme de algo sobre la historia de mi familia.

Aunque vengo de una línea larga de orgullosas campanas escolares, mi tátara, tátara, tátara, tátarabuelo fue la Campana del Barco de la famosa expedición náutica: el HMS Challenger, en el año 1872.

¡El Challenger fue la primera exploración científica del océano!

Con razón que el mar me ha fascinado toda la vida, desde que era una campanita.

¡Eso se ha heredado por muchas generaciones, está dentro, en mi ser!

¡Hábitat!

Quieren que les enseñe a los niños algo sobre las hábitats, ¡claro!

Un hábitat es otra palabra para un lugar, o un ambiente, en donde vive y crece un animal, o una planta.

¡Como su casa!

Para los peces, su hábitat natural es el agua.

Pueden vivir en el mar, en un lago, un río, un arroyo o incluso, en un acuario, ¡como ese!

Pero el mar, o el océano, es donde vive la mayoría de las especies marinas del mundo.

♪ El mar es un hábitat muy importante en nuestro planeta.

Es donde viven miles de diferentes tipos de especies, como peces, tiburones, ballenas, delfines, langostas, camarones, anguilas, focas, corales, así como diferentes plantas o algas marinas.

También hay cangrejos, caballitos del mar, y muchas, muchas otras criaturas.

Y mira nomas, ya que estamos hablando de caballitos del mar, el título de nuestro cuento para hoy es, "Sandy el Caballito de Mar" escrito por Ed Kurtz, con dibujos por Karolina Dziewa.

(leyendo un libro) "La S es para Sandy.

"Ella es un Caballito de Mar "que vive en las cálidas aguas del océano.

"Sandy parece un caballo, "pero ella no tiene patas.

"¿Cómo se puede mover en el agua?

Es nuestra responsabilidad cuidar estos hábitats naturales.

Vivimos en un planeta increíble, pero necesita nuestra ayuda, al igual que a las criaturas que dependen de él.

es una maqueta chiquita de nuestro planeta, La Tierra.

Todas estas partes verdes, son terreno, y las partes azules, son agua.

Todo este azul representa el mar, o el océano de la tierra.

(música parpadeante) ♪ El mar ocupa 71% de nuestro planeta.

Eso quiere decir, que, si la tierra fuera una pizza, la parte más grande de ella, sería el mar.

(¡muerde!)

(sonido de salpicando) La parte más profunda del mar, mide más de 10,000 pies.

¡Eso es a más de 2 millas de profundidad!

¡Imagínate, más hondo que 28 campos de fútbol!

(silbato del árbitro) (sonido de aplausos) El mar es muy importante para nosotros, por muchas razones... ¡nos da comida, mantiene el clima de la tierra, y produce la mayor parte del oxígeno que respiramos!

¡Tenemos una responsabilidad, y nos corresponde a cada uno de nosotros, ayudar - y a cuidar - a nuestro planeta, y al mar!

Pues, podemos usar menos productos plásticos cuando sea posible; podemos reciclar, o ¡ayudar con organizar limpiezas de playa!

Words like environment/ambiente, the surrounding in which an animal lives.

Ocean/océano, a body of saltwater that covers the Earth.

Species/especies, a group of living organisms that have similar characteristics.

Here is an example of species that live in the ocean.

Aqui hay un ejemplo de especies que viven en el océano: dolphins/delfines, turtles/tortugas, fishes/peces, and of course, seahorses/caballitos de mar, (caballo relinchando) just like Sandy the Seahorse!
