WE NOW JOIN THE WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA QUILTERS' GUILD FOR THEIR ANNUAL QUILT SHOW SETUP.
BEHIND THE SCENES CAN REALLY BE FRANTIC.
BRINGING THE QUILTS IN, DECIDING WHERE TO PLACE THEM, DISPERSING THEM IN EACH ROOM CAN BE A PROBLEM AND TAKES A FULL LONG DAY OF WORK.
[sped-up voices] [frantic acoustic guitar music] ♪ ♪ WE SOLVED ONE OF THE PROBLEMS FOR HANGING THE QUILTS BY SIMPLY PLACING THEM ON TOP OF CHAIRS THAT WERE SUPPORTED UP ON TABLES.
THE OTHER QUILTS WERE HUNG ON QUILT RACKS FOR FULL VIEWING.
HOPEFULLY THERE IS A GUILD IN YOUR COMMUNITY OR SOME SORT OF AN ORGANIZED CLUB.
IT'S ENJOYABLE TO QUILT EVERY WEEK AT A CHURCH GET-TOGETHER OR IN A FRIEND'S HOUSE.
BUT I THINK THE BENEFITS OF AN ORGANIZED GUILD ARE ENORMOUS.
THE GIVE AND TAKE BETWEEN ALL OF THE MEMBERS, THE OPPORTUNITY TO HAVE PROFESSIONALS FROM OUTSIDE THE AREA, THE IMPACT ON YOUR COMMUNITY THROUGH THE CHARITABLE ENDEAVORS, AND THE BUSINESS GROWTH ARE ALL AFFECTED, EVERYONE JOINING AND WORKING TOGETHER.
SO OFTEN I HEAR THE COMMENT, "OH, I DON'T WANT TO GET INVOLVED IN A LARGE LADIES' GROUP."
WELL, I FEEL THAT IF EVERYONE HAD THAT ATTITUDE, THINK OF ALL THE WORTHWHILE CLUBS AND ACTIVITIES THAT WOULD NEVER HAVE SUCCEEDED.
YOU NEED TO RECOGNIZE THE FACT THAT IT TAKES DEDICATION, TOLERANCE, AND REALLY A TRUE GIVING SPIRIT TO GROW AND DEVELOP AS A GROUP.
SOMETIMES IT IS NOT EASY, BUT THERE IS A DEFINITE CORRELATION BETWEEN THE AMOUNT OF EFFORT PUT FORTH AND THE AMOUNT OF FUN AND SATISFACTION DERIVED.
I KNOW IT.

WE HAVE SEVERAL DECORATORS IN HENDERSONVILLE, ONE WHO IS CONTEMPORARY, ONE WHO IS VICTORIAN, AND THE OTHER IS COUNTRY.
>> VERY NICE.
I HAVE MY EYE ON A PARTICULAR QUILT.
THIS--IS IT CALLED-- WHAT WAS THE NAME OF THIS?

>> AND SIMPLE RECTANGLES.
IT HAS A--IT'S NOT THE BRIGHTEST QUILT AT THE QUILT SHOW.
BUT IT HAS A WARM, EARTHY FEELING TO IT.

WOULD YOU BELIEVE 11 YARDS OF FABRIC FOR THE ENTIRE OUTFIT, BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY, 103 HOURS OF WORK TO FINISH THE ENSEMBLE?
OUR DESIGNER THIS TIME IS MARGE MURPHY.
SHE HAS CREATED A LOVELY SHADOW TRAPUNTO REVERSIBLE SUIT.
A VERY SHEER BATISTE FABRIC IS ON TOP.
COLORED THREADS ARE THEN PULLED THROUGH TO GIVE THAT LOVELY RAISED TRAPUNTO AREA.
A SCROLLWORK IS DESIGNED THROUGHOUT THE BODICE AND FLOWING ALONG THE ARMS ALSO.

THE HILLS ARE ALIVE IS THE NAME OF THE OUTFIT THAT JEAN IS MODELING.
IT IS MADE BY SHIRLEY BOTSFORD OF NEW YORK CITY.
NOTICE THAT THE BATTING IS INCORPORATED IN THE LOWER PORTION OF THE SKIRT.
THAT IS WHERE ALL THE QUILTING TAKES PLACE.
IT IS A COMBINATION BATTING CALLED COTTON CLASSIC, PART COTTON AND PART POLYESTER.
BY ONLY HAVING THE BATTING IN THE LOWER PORTION, YOU DON'T HAVE THAT FULLNESS AROUND THE WAISTLINE OF THE SKIRT.

IT APPEARS TO BE A VERY SUBTLE OUTFIT ON THE OUTSIDE, WHITE-ON-WHITE STRIP PIECING WITH OVER 1,400 PIECES IN THE ENTIRE OUTFIT.
BUT IN TAKING A CLOSER GLANCE AT THIS OUTFIT, IT BECOMES TOTALLY REVERSIBLE.
AND LOOK AT THE WONDERFUL SMASHING COLOR THAT IS INCORPORATED ON THE REVERSE SIDE.
NANA IS FEATURING AN OUTFIT MADE BY MARINDA BROWN ENTITLED LUCK BE A LADY TONIGHT.
IT CAPTURES A MARVELOUS COMBINATION OF RED, GOLD, AND BLACK.
IF YOU LOOK CLOSELY AT THE YOKE BOTH IN THE FRONT AND THE BACK OF THE JACKET, SHE HAS INCORPORATED RUSSIAN NEEDLE PUNCH EMBROIDERY.
OUR LAST GARMENT FEATURED IS ENTITLED SOMETHING OLD, SOMETHING NEW, SOMETHING BORROWED, SOMETHING BLUE, AND SOMETHING SHADOW TRAPUNTO TOO.
THIS WAS ANOTHER ONE OF MY ENSEMBLES MADE FOR THE HOUSTON QUILT MARKET.
THE FINALE FEATURES MANY OF THE GARMENTS SHOWN THIS EVENING.
UNFORTUNATELY, TIME DID NOT PERMIT US TO SHOW EVERYTHING.
BUT WE HOPE THAT YOU ENJOYED HAVING A TASTE OF WHAT CAN BE DONE WITH QUILTING WHEN IT'S APPLIED TO GARMENTS.
I THOUGHT YOU MIGHT ENJOY HAVING A CLOSER LOOK AT THE TOWN AND COUNTRY ENSEMBLE.
I HAD FUN JUST CREATING A MOCK VILLAGE ALL AROUND THE BASE USING THE GEOMETRIC SHAPES TO REPRESENT AND SUGGEST HOUSES.
ON THE REVERSE SIDE, I USED THE FLEXICURVE TO DO A COUNTRY SCENE IN A VERY FLOWING SEW AND FLIP METHOD.
AND WE'LL BE LEARNING THIS AT ONE OF OUR NEXT SHOWS.
LET'S EXPLORE THE MAPLE LEAF PATTERN.
WE FIRST SAW IT IN THE GYPSY IN MY SOUL QUILT.
AND I'VE ALWAYS ENJOYED THE SIMPLICITY OF THIS PATTERN, BECAUSE IT'S REALLY BASED ON JUST TWO SIZES OF TRIANGLES AND ONE SQUARE.
IT HAS A LOT OF POTENTIAL, AND I ENCOURAGE NOT ONLY MY BEGINNER CLASSES BUT MY INTERMEDIATE CLASSES TO REALLY WORK WITH THIS PATTERN.
LET'S RECALL THAT WHENEVER WE'RE WORKING WITH TRIANGLES THAT ARE SEWN TOGETHER TO EQUAL A SQUARE, WE CAN TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE QUICKIE PIECE METHOD.
AND THAT'S NOTHING MORE THAN PUTTING THE TWO RIGHT SIDES OF OUR FABRIC TOGETHER AND TRACING AROUND IT.
I'VE ALREADY CUT TWO APART.
WE'RE A LITTLE-- GETTING AHEAD HERE.
BUT SOME OF THEM ARE STILL SEWN.
AND THAT HAPPENED BECAUSE WE TRACED AROUND THE TRIANGLE, FLIPPED IT OVER, KEPT FLIPPING, AND THEN WE SEWED ON EITHER SIDE OF THE DIAGONAL.
I THINK YOU CAN SEE VERY NICELY ON THIS SIDE ALSO THAT IT HAS BEEN SEWN TOGETHER.
THEN WE'RE GONNA USE OUR OLFA CUTTER AND OUR NICE, THICK RULER, AND SIMPLY CUT DOWN AND START DIVIDING THESE SEGMENTS INTO OUR SQUARES.
BECAUSE THEY HAVE BEEN SEWN TOGETHER, ONCE THEY ARE CUT APART AND OPENED UP, WE HAVE OUR SQUARES.
WE COULD EVEN CUT THESE OUT AND LAYER THESE ON TOP OF EACH OTHER AND WATCH OUR LITTLE BLOCKS GROW.
ONCE THIS HAS HAPPENED, THEN YOU CAN START THE DESIGN ELEMENT OF YOUR VEST.
BY NOW YOU'VE PROBABLY FOUND YOUR FAVORITE VEST PATTERN, AND YOU'RE VERY FAMILIAR WITH THE FACT THAT IF YOU'RE GOING TO MAKE A VEST FOR WARMTH, IT'LL BE BASED ON A PELLON FLEECE.
IT'S NOTHING MORE THAN TAKING YOUR PATTERN, CUTTING OUT THE PELLON FLEECE.
AND I'D CUT IT OUT A LITTLE BIT LARGER TO ALLOW FOR THAT TAKE-UP WHEN YOU'RE DOING THE QUILTING.
WHAT I'D LIKE TO ENCOURAGE YOU TO DO IS EXPERIMENT WITH YOUR BLOCKS.
IN CASE OF SOMETHING LIKE THIS, RATHER THAN JUST DOING SOMETHING LIKE THIS, LET'S TURN AND PLAY AND SEE IF WE CAN'T FIND MAYBE A MORE UNUSUAL SETTING FOR ONE OF YOUR BLOCKS.
PERHAPS YOU WANT SOMETHING AT A DIAGONAL ON THE FRONT.
PERHAPS YOU WANT THIS ON THE OFFSET OF THE BACK OF YOUR VEST.
ONCE YOU'RE HAPPY WITH THE COLORS THAT YOU'RE WORKING WITH, THEN DECIDE IF YOU WANT A HORIZONTAL OR A MORE VERTICAL LOOK IN YOUR VEST.
DO YOU WANT IT ASYMMETRICAL?
DO YOU WANT TO THEN START EXPERIMENTING WITH SOME OF THE FABRICS THAT ALL COORDINATE?
PERHAPS YOU'RE GOING TO SEW AND FLIP IN STRAIGHT STRING PIECING, AND THEN TURN AND MAYBE START AN ANGLE AND ALMOST A FAN DESIGN.
I WOULD ENCOURAGE YOU TO SPEND TIME WITH YOUR COLORS, PIN IT, LOOK AT IT AT A DISTANCE, AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS TO DEVELOP A VERY ORIGINAL AND YOUR OWN MAPLE LEAF VEST.
WE HAVE A WONDERFUL ARRAY, MORE VESTS THAN YOU COULD EVER IMAGINE ALL AROUND THE BEDPOST.
SO LET'S TAKE A LOOK AT THEM.
WHAT AN ARRAY OF MAPLE LEAF VESTS.
THE BLACK-AND-WHITE RENDITION IS ALWAYS A LITTLE MORE DIFFICULT WHEN YOU'RE DEALING WITH A LONGER VEST, BUT SHE HAS HANDLED IT VERY NICELY, BRINGING HER DESIGN ALL THE WAY AROUND AND THEN INTO POCKETS ON THE FRONT SIDE.
I LIKE WHAT SHE HAS DONE HERE.
SHE HAS ALMOST CREATED A LARGE STEM COMING UP TO A VERY LITTLE FLOWER, VERY NICE, IN BALANCE WITH ANOTHER POCKET ON THE RIGHT SIDE.
SHE HAS A FOUR-PATCH ON THE BACK THAT IS BROKEN UP WITH MORE OF THE POLISHED COTTON.
THIS LOOKS LIKE ONE OF OUR STILL WARM VESTS IN THAT SHE HASN'T QUITE FINISHED HER UNDERNEATH SEAMS.
BUT SHE DOES HAVE A NICE COMING AND GOING EFFECT IN DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS IN A NICE NAVY BLUE AND BURGUNDY ACCENT.
I LOVE THIS KELLY GREEN.

IT LOOKS SO NICE.
THIS SEEMS LIKE IT'S IN VERY GOOD BALANCE WITH THE DARK AND THE LIGHT.
VERY FEMININE COLORS IN THE PINK AND GREEN.
AND LOOK HOW SHE HAS TWISTED HER STEM TO MAKE A LITTLE KNOT.
SHE'S DONE THAT BOTH ON THE FRONT SIDE AND ON THE BACK ALSO.
THIS IS ONE OF MY FIRST VESTS.
AND I SIMPLY ALMOST COULD CALL IT THE MAPLE LEAVES ARE FALLING, BECAUSE THEY'RE SET IN JUST-- ON ALL KIND OF AN ASYMMETRICAL SLANT, AND THEN BALANCED IT WITH SOME OF THE TONES OF THE BEIGE ON THE BACK SIDE.
RED AND BEIGE, AND NOTICE HERE HOW YOU CAN BARELY SEE THE POINT, BECAUSE THE TONE OF THE TWO COLORS ARE VERY SIMILAR.
THIS VEST LOOKS LIKE IT'S ALL READY TO GO TO A SQUARE DANCE.
WONDERFUL BRIGHT COLORS AND VERY INTERESTING SETTING ON THE BACK SIDE, TRIMMED IN PLAID.
I LIKE SHIRLEY'S TREATMENT OF CORDUROY.
THAT ADDS A NICE TEXTURE.
VERY STRONG DIAGONAL ON THE BACK SIDE AND A SUGGESTION OF FLYING GEESE IN ONE CORNER.
RUTH FARRAR HAS DONE A VERY NICE JOB AND A STRONG DIAGONAL ALL ACROSS THE BACK SIDE.
SHE HAS STRING QUILTING GOING UP IN ONE DIAGONAL SLANT.
I BELIEVE RUTH MADE A SKIRT TO GO WITH THIS, SO SHE HAS AN ENTIRE ENSEMBLE.
THESE ARE PRETTY COLORS, THE BEIGE ACCENT, AND ANOTHER VERY INTERESTING SETTING, ALMOST A PINWHEEL TURN OF THE MAPLE LEAF ON THE BACK SIDE.
WE COULD CALL THIS VEST MOCHA FUDGE.
DOESN'T IT HAVE A BEAUTIFUL ARRAY OF CHOCOLATE AND BROWN TONES?
AND ON THE BACK, SHE'S DONE SOMETHING INTERESTING.
SHE HAS HER STEMS RADIATING OUT INSTEAD OF GOING TO THE INSIDE.
I LIKE THE EFFECT ON THIS VEST, ALMOST A CRAZY PATCH APPROACH ON THE TOP SIDE.
ON THE BACK, SHE'S DONE SOMETHING INTERESTING.
SHE HAS ALTERNATED HER DARK AND HER LIGHT FOR AN ENTIRELY NEW LOOK.
IT'S SO HANDSOME, THE WAY SHE'S QUILTED, RADIATING UP FROM THE CENTER BACK.
HERE WE HAVE A PATRIOTIC RED, WHITE, AND BLUE VEST, A TOUCH OF STRING IN THE FRONT, AND A COMPLETELY NEW LOOK OF MAPLE LEAF ON THE BACK SIDE.
NAVY AND WHITE ALWAYS LOOKS SO CRISP, AND HERE WE HAVE A TOUCH OF EYELET.
ON THE BACK SHE HAS DIVIDED HER MAPLE LEAF WITH WIDE BANDS.
MORE SQUARE DANCING, MARVELOUS COLORS, AND ALSO, SHE HAS CONTINUED HER QUILTING LINES ON THE OUTSIDE.
THE SQUARE COMES OUT FROM THE SQUARE, AND THE DIAGONAL COMES OUT FROM THE TRIANGLE.
VERY EFFECTIVE.
I REMEMBER SEEING THIS VEST WAITING IN LINE AT THE QUILT SHOW.
LOVELY LARGE PAISLEY DESIGN.
AND THIS VEST HAS AN EFFECTIVE COMBINATION OF STEM.
THIS COULD BE THE INSPIRATION FOR A WHOLE QUILT.
SO WE COULD MAKE A VEST, AND THEN MAKE A QUILT TO MATCH THE VEST.

AND YOU THOUGHT WE HAD SEEN ALL THE VESTS.

THE FLYING GEESE PATTERN HAS BECOME SO POPULAR LATELY.
WE SEE IT IN GARMENTS AND IN QUILTS ALSO.
IT'S BASED ON A RECTANGLE.
IT IS DERIVED FROM ONE LARGE TRIANGLE WITH TWO SMALLER TRIANGLES SEWN TO IT.
YOU CAN SEE IT HERE IN THIS BAND.
WE ALSO SAW IT IN SHIRLEY'S VEST, A NICE FRONT PANEL WITH A VERY TEENY-WEENY FLYING GEESE.
WE'VE ALSO SEEN IT IN THE ATTACHE CASE THAT'S IN PROGRESS.
WE ARE GOING TO NOW CAPTURE IT IN OUR QUILT OF THE DAY CALLED GATHERING GEESE.
YOU CAN SEE IT DRAFTED HERE, WHERE WE HAVE THE GEESE FLYING OUT, AND WE ALSO HAVE THEM FLYING IN, DEPENDING ON HOW YOU SET YOUR PATTERN.
YOU CAN SEE IT DONE IN THE COLORS OF AQUA AND IN YELLOW AND DONE IN STRIPES.
SHIRLEY HAS CHOSEN TO DO HER FLYING GEESE IN THE LOVELY MOCHA COLORS AND PINK.
I HAVE COME UP WITH A QUICKIE PIECE METHOD FOR MAKING AND SEWING YOUR FLYING GEESE PATTERN.
IT'S BASED ON THE IDEA AND THE PRINCIPAL THAT THE TWO SMALLER TRIANGLES, ONE THAT'S SEWN ON THIS SIDE AND ON THIS SIDE TO THE SHORT SIDE OF THE LARGER TRIANGLE.
WE HAVE A LONG SIDE AND A SHORT.
THE DIAGONAL OF THE SMALL TRIANGLE IS SEWN TO THE SHORT SIDE.
YOU CUT A BIAS FABRIC THAT IS THE WIDTH OF THIS SMALLER TRIANGLE FROM THE RAW EDGE OF THE SEAM ALLOWANCE TO THE RIGHT ANGLE.
YOU THEN TAKE YOUR LARGE FLYING GEESE TRIANGLE AND PLACE THAT SHORT SIDE AGAINST THE RAW EDGE.
NOW, MAKE SURE THAT IN BETWEEN, YOU LEAVE A HALF AN INCH.
WE ARE THEN GONNA SEW THAT, OUR NORMAL 1/4 INCH SEAM ALLOWANCE.
AND I USUALLY JUST GO AHEAD AND SEW RIGHT THROUGH THE BLUE FABRIC.
IF I WERE MAKING A WHOLE QUILT, I'D JUST KEEP SEWING PROBABLY ONE THOUSAND OF THESE PURPLE TRIANGLES.
BUT I'M GONNA SEW JUST A FEW FOR YOU TODAY TO SEE.
I WOULD THEN COME AND CUT AGAINST THE BASE OR THE LONGER SIDE OF THE TRIANGLE.
AND THEN I WOULD CUT AGAIN.
I THEN AM GOING TO PICK UP MY SMALLER TRIANGLE.
AND WHEN YOU OPEN THAT UP, I THINK YOU CAN GET A GOOD FEEL FOR THE FACT THAT THAT JUST FALLS RIGHT AGAINST THAT.
LINE IT UP.
AND THEN CUT THAT.
THE ONE THAT CUTS OFF AND FALLS OFF IS GOING TO BE THE SAME SIZE AS THIS TRIANGLE.
IT'S THE MATE THAT GOES ON THE OTHER SIDE.
AND YOU'VE SAVED YOURSELF FROM CUTTING OUT TWO SEPARATE TRIANGLES.
I THEN WOULD COME AND LINE THIS UP, MAKING SURE THE POINTS ALIGN AND SEW MY 1/4 AGAIN.
OF COURSE, ONCE YOU'VE SEWN THAT, YOU'VE GOT TO CHECK AND MAKE SURE THAT YOU HAVE YOUR PERFECT RECTANGLE.
THIS IS THE BASE FOR THE FLYING GEESE AND WILL HELP YOU SPEED UP YOUR ENTIRE METHOD.
FROM THAT RAW EDGE IN, YOU HAVE YOUR PERFECT 1/4 INCH.
SO YOU'RE ON TARGET.
THE NEXT TIME, WE'RE GONNA TURN TO SOME MACHINE QUILTING.
SO CHECK YOUR SEWING MACHINE BOX, AND SEE IF YOU HAVE A DARNING FOOT.
ALSO LOOK AND CHECK YOUR MACHINE AND SEE IF YOU CAN TURN YOUR MACHINE AND DROP THOSE FEED DOGS FOR A NICE, CLEAN BASE AT THE THROAT PLATE.
