Why do lizards lose their tails?
Whoa, check out this little lizard.
He has four legs, claws, and a tail.
Sometimes a lizard loses its tail and grows one back.
Oh no, I think this lizard might think I'm a predator.
When a lizard loses its tail, the tail whips and wiggles on the ground for about a half an hour.
It distracts the predators and gives the lizard time to run away.
The original tail is made out of bone, but when it grows back, it will be made out of cartilage, the same stuff that makes up your nose and ears.
A lizard can use its tail to hang onto branches, propel through water, and balance, but its ability to lose its tail might just save its life.
