Bamboo is a giant grass, and is an important part of the habitat of this Cloud Forest.
Bamboo are vital for the survival of the rare and endangered golden bamboo lemur.
But it takes a special technique to eat this tough grass.
See how he does it?
He bites it off with his sharp teeth.
That’s step number one.
Step number two: he breaks the bamboo.
He goes along the branch with his teeth, chewing, and then strips off that hard outer layer, exposing that tender stuff inside.
And then, he just munches on the tender stuff like a piece of celery.
The bamboo that these guys eat is full of cyanide, which is a type of poison.
But the golden bamboo lemur has a digestive system that can deal with the poison, and that’s one of their Creature Powers.
MARTIN: And that is so amazing, because the amount of cyanide a golden bamboo lemur eats in a single day is enough to kill 12 animals of the same size.
But the golden bamboo lemur survives.
Now, bamboo doesn’t look very tasty to me, but it’s such a good food for lemurs.
So good, that there are two other species of bamboo lemurs in this forest who depend on bamboo to survive.
The gentle bamboo lemur, the smallest, about the size of a large squirrel.
He eats thin, vine-y bamboo.
And the greater bamboo lemur.
This bamboo-eating species was once thought to be extinct, but then was rediscovered.
It’s the biggest bamboo lemur, and there are very few surviving today.
They eat a special part of the bamboo that other bamboo lemurs can’t get to.
CHRIS: They have the power in their jaws to chew through the big, thick woody stalks to get to the tender stuff inside.
