MARTIN: Here on the North American continent, from the west coast to the east coast, in all kinds of forests, roams a very large, very cool mammal.
Hey, it’s us, the Kratt Brothers!
I’m Martin.
I’m Chris.
Black bears are the most common bear in all of North America, living in all kinds of habitats.
And we have a friend we want you to meet.
Oh, this is Adrian.
She’s a 13-year-old black bear who was raised as an orphan, and now she helps teach people about bears.
She knows us and we’re black bear professionals, but black bears are wild animals that are big and powerful.
Always give a black bear their space, back off, and never approach a black bear.
But now that we’re with our friend here, we can get a close-up look at a lot of cool black bear features.
CHRIS: Look at that face.
They have pretty good eyesight and a good sense of hearing, but the sense that really stands out in a black bear is the sense of smell.
That nose has the power to sniff out all kinds of food.
Since they’re omnivores, bears will eat anything, from insects, berries, nuts, small mammals, you name it.
A bear will pretty much eat it.
Check out those front legs and huge powerful body.
You know, black bears are a lot stronger than people.
They’re built for strength.
CHRIS: And how about those claws?
They’re super strong and really sharp.
Perfect for ripping open logs and even climbing trees.
No doubt about it, black bears are a powerhouse of a creature with lots of amazing abilities and really cool creature powers.
Imagine if we had all the cool creature powers of the American black bear.
BOTH: What if!

Um, sounds like a lot of bears live there.

Trees, rivers, nature.
What good is it all?
None!
So, can I start the pavers?
Soon.
Ooh!
I, Paisley Paver of Pave Nature Incorporated, will make this island useful, and continue with my mission to pave all wild places for future generations.
I like the paving part!
Look, the trees are all jumbled up.
Not in straight lines.
The river’s all twisty.
There’s no order.
It’s messy.
I’ll show you how we’ll fix that mess, Rex.
Hope it’s with paving!

This!
Aah!
Now, isn’t this better?
Oh, that’s nice, Paisley.

The more pavement, the better!
Uh, what is it?
PAISLEY: A mega storage facility.
You’ve heard of mini storage.
Well, this is mega storage.
Well, there aren’t many people around here to use it, but who cares?
Let’s pave!
PAISLEY: Remember, Rex.
If we build it, they will come.
Yes!

Just say go.
You may get the paving machines ready.
CHRIS: They went in there.
Whoa!
I’m not going in there.
Always a good idea to give bears plenty of space, Aviva.
AVIVA: But what are the bears doing in there?
Well, let’s find out with the Flycam drone.
MARTIN: There’s not much a bear likes better than a good berry patch.
They can eat thousands of berries in one sitting.
AVIVA: Well, it’s like they’re going from one buffet table to the next.
Yep, and if it’s not a berry patch, it’s a tree full of beech nuts or acorns.
Black bears are great climbers.
Not only to get food, but to get away from wolves and grizzly bears too.
BOTH: Oof!
Huh?
(Gasping) Chris, Martin, look!
A white bear!
BOTH: What?
CHRIS: Where?
I saw a white bear right there!
White bear?
Aviva, look, there are no polar bears this far south.
Yeah, see, there are three kinds of bears in North America.
The black bear, the most common and smallest of the three.
CHRIS: The brown bear, or grizzly, is a larger bear that likes open spaces.
MARTIN: And the polar bear, a huge seal-hunting specialist of the Arctic.
And they don’t live down here, so you couldn’t have seen a white bear.
Yeah, unless it’s a really lost polar bear.
(Laughing) Well, I saw it.
And now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to add climbing features like sharp claws and footpads to the black bear Power suit.
And when I’m finished, I might not let you guys use it.
(Nervous laughing) BOTH: Please?
Eek!
The ground is mushy.
It’s so dirty!
I got you covered, Paisley!

Now that’s what I call an improvement.
Look, those bushes aren’t even in straight lines.
We’ll replace that with an even row of storage buildings.

MARTIN: Yes, also called the Kermode bear!
CHRIS: How could we have forgotten about them?
MARTIN: This is the only place in North America where there are actually some black bears that are white.
White black bears?
Are they albino?
No, not albino.
It’s just a rare hair color.
Only about 1 in 10 black bears in this area are actually white like her.
AVIVA: That’s so cool.
But why?
Why are they white?
Good question, and I’m glad you asked, because it’s time for... a Kratt Brothers Experiment.
Uh-oh.
It involves the Fishmobile and the Miniaturizer.
Uh, not sure if I like the sound of this.
But we gotta do it for science, bro!
Here’s the plan... (Rumbling) (Gasping) What’s that?
Doesn’t sound good.
Somebody’s gotta go check it out, and while I’d really love to get into a Fishmobile with a bunch of bears around, I’ll go!
Okay, we’ll stick with the spirit bear and the experiment.
See ya!
I’ll be back.
Glad I got out of that one.
(Zapping) Are you sure about this?
Oh yeah, we got to figure out why these bears are white, and it just might have something to do with fishing.
Here I come, bears!
(Beeping) Okay, it’s Pawflip versus Spirit!
Who’s the better fisher bear?
Ha ha!
Getting into position.
I’m all ready, Aviva.
Okay, bears, on your marks.

Stop the machines!
Ah!
PAISLEY: Ugh, you’re in my way.
That’s so inefficient of you.
Uh, excuse me!
But what’re you doing with these paving machines?
Progress, that’s what.
I am Paisley Paver, CEO of Pave Nature Incorporated.
I’m paving these islands for a mega storage, and you are messing up my schedule.
A mega storage?
Really?
But creatures live here.
Like that little spirit bear cub in the bushes.
Ugh.
You must be those Wild Kratts I’ve heard about.
Rex, would you clear the obstacle, please?
I thought you’d never ask!
Huh?
Hey, what are you doing?
Animals are such a nuisance, and they just get in the way.
In the way?
But this island is their home.
Not anymore, and now they’re causing me delays.
Do you hear that?
Uh, no?
That’s time, and it’s ticking away.
And time is money.
Now step aside.
Not until you give me back the bear cub.
Oh, well, if you won’t move, I’ll do it myself.
Move him!
(Gasping) Hey!
Aah!
Now just stay out of the way and watch.
You’ll like the changes I make to this island.
But no one even wants a mega storage here!
Roll on, Rex.
Yes!
Full speed ahead!
(Rumbling) Now, where are those bears?
Over there!
It’s Pawflip!
Look out!
AVIVA: Ooh, a miss from Pawflip.
Whew, we saw her dark body above us just in time.
But where’s Spirit?
I don’t see her.
Ah, that’s it!
That could be why spirit bears have developed white fur.
It helps them get more fish!
Fish have trouble seeing them against the bright sky and frothy white water!
Aah!
Wow!
That’s another one for Spirit!
Hmm, wait!
Chris?
All right, Spirit, I think you win!
Yep, easy girl, you win 10 to 6.
And you even found Chris.
(Nervous laughing) Experiment’s over.
(Nervous laughing) (Glass cracking) Aah!
Please don’t eat me!
Oof!
Chris, are you all right?
Yeah.
(Groaning) So now we know.
A spirit bear’s white fur is harder for fish to see than a normal black bear’s fur.
That’s why they catch more fish.
Cool.
It’s like they have fish-catching camouflage!
Experiment successful.
(Beeping) MARTIN: Chris, Aviva, come in!
Martin, what’s going on?
Paisley Paver’s flattening Bear Island!

CHRIS & MARTIN: Bear hug!
Well, mission accomplished!
The bears’ home is safe.
MARTIN: And that includes the home of the great spirit bear, a special kind of black bear.
AVIVA: Hey, how can she have one black cub and one white cub?
In this part of the world, the bears can have white spirit cubs or black cubs.
It’s kind of like Martin and I. We’re brothers, but my eyes are brown.
And mine are blue.
Cool, black bears are awesome!
MARTIN: And they have some cool creature powers.
An all around powerhouse of a creature.
CHRIS: That spends most of its time eating to get ready for hibernation.
AVIVA: That’s great, but talking about spending time, it look’s like we’ve got some cleaning up to do.
(Grunting) How’s that for a start?
A bear-y good idea, bro.
Oh, brothers.
(Grunting) So a spirit bear is a special type of black bear with completely white fur.
They live only in small areas in the western part of North America.
Right up in the coastal wet temperate rainforest, where they hunt for food, including fish.
But regardless of that unique white color, spirit bears are still black bears.
And we have two more black bear friends right here!
Hey, this is Blue, and that’s Berry.
CHRIS: They’re brother and sister, and they’re about 4 months old.
They too were raised by professionals here at a centre for orphaned animals.
You guys are fun to explore with!
They like to check out everything in the woods.
They’re very curious.
MARTIN: A black bear has a head slung low to the ground.
They’re always checking things out.
Whatever’s in front of their face, right?
These guys are just about the age where they’re starting to test solid foods.
So right about now, they’ll start to eat insects and berries and nuts and anything that they can find.
Bears are omnivores, right?
So they eat plant material and meat.
Where you going, buddy?
Wait for me!
Tree climbing time!
Wow, good job, Berry!
Check it out, black bear cubs are great climbers.
They have really strong arms and sharp claws for getting up there in the trees.
All black bears often go up to get berries and nuts, but it’s also a great way to protect themselves.
Little black bear cubs often climb to escape wolves or brown bears or even male black bears.
But there’s still some practicing to do.
Whoa, come on, guy!
Come on, let’s run!
Let’s run!
I’ll race you!
Let’s go!
