♪ Wild Kratts ♪ - On the eastern shores of the Atlantic Ocean, we are here on Assateague Island.
- It's us, the Kratt brothers.
I'm Chris.
- I'm Martin.
And we are looking for a really cool animal that you're gonna love.
This animal's been marooned here for hundreds of years.
But where are they?
Look, tracks.
All these holes in the mud are tracks of the animals we're looking for.
I think they came up this way.
- There they are.
-[Both] Wild ponies.
- A group of wild ponies is called a band.
- Come on, let's go meet the band and get to know who's who.
These are the mares.
Mares are adult female horses.
- And most of the herd is made up of mares.
There's a mare, and another mare, and another mare, and another mare.
There are 11 mares in this band.
- But there is only one stallion.
It's his job to keep the band together and protect the mares and foals from any predators or other stallions.
- And in the spring, come the new members of the band, the foals.
A foal is a baby horse.
And this little guy looks like he's about 10 to 14 days old.
Take a look at these pony's long legs.
If you go right down to the bottom, you can see they end in one hoof.
That is one toenail.
So they actually stand on one toe so their legs can be extra long, and that helps them run really fast.
- Imagine if we could run around the marsh flats like a wild pony.
- Imagine if we had wild pony power.

Come on, ponies, especially young ones, need their band to survive.
We've gotta find him.
And we could really use our pony power suits.
- [Chris] Aviva, how's that pony programming going?
- Well, it was going very well, until a lone stallion showed up and challenged the stallion of the band.
(stallion neighing) - [Koki] They're facing off right now.
- But it's strange, they're all amped up, but they're not fighting.
- [Koki] They're trotting, side by side.
Like a dance.
- That's the parallel prance.
Ah, I can't believe we're missing this.
- Parallel prance?
- Yeah, parallel prance.
It's when the ponies to a ritualized prance side by side, each showing off how strong they are.
And maybe one of them will be intimidated and back down.
(stallions neighing) - [Aviva] Now they're bucking up and rearing and kicking their legs.
- Oh, I can't believe we're missing it.
A stallion fight.
- We're missing this because Spooky is missing.
Come on, we've gotta find him.
- Whoa.
- [Martin] And Aviva, remember to put those powers into the pony power suits.
- Right on.
(dramatic music) - Whoa, look at them go at it.
(stallions neighing) - [Aviva] Neither one is backing down.
- [Koki] Those teeth.
(stallions galloping) - [Aviva] Those hooves.
Our stallion won.
(stallion neighing) - [Koki] His band is safe.
- That was intense.
- Yeah.
- A real epic battle that showed us a lot more amazing pony powers we can add to the CPS.
- That's for sure.
(machine beeping) - Ahh, these flies are annoying.
(claps hands) Hey, here's another observation, Aviva.
The horses tails, they swish constantly shooing the flies away.
- Wow, it's like their tails just automatically swish so they can relax and graze.
Ugh, that'd be a good power to have now.
- It sure would.
One horse tail coming up.
Take that you flies.
And that, and that.
Wow, it really works.
(laughs) - Okay, adding swishing tail.
(fly buzzing) - [Koki] Do you see that?
If a fly lands where the tail can't reach, ponies have another way to get the fly to bug off.
Their skin shakes.
- Let's program it in.
Ponies have the power to relax when they're being bugged.
- [Koki] Everybody's relaxed except for mom.
(pony neighing) Look at her pace, she's really worried about her baby.
- Yeah, that reminds up why we're programming pony power.
To find the lost foal.
-[Both] Spooky, Spooky!
-[Both] Spooky.
- There.
We found him.
- Oh and Spooky found a rare and endangered Delmarva fox squirrel.
- Okay, come with us, buddy.
- Yeah, we'll get you back to the band.
(pony neighing) Ah, he likes us.
(pony neighing) -[Both] Uh oh.
- Oh no.
- Not good, Spooky is spooked.
(exciting music) -[Both] Spooky!
- Come back.
- Awe, we lost him again.
No doubt about it, horses need to be in a group for confidence and security.
Especially a little foal.
All alone he's scared, nervous, and really easily spooked.
- But if we had activated pony power suits, then we would be a band of ponies.
And Spooky would be more secure, and calm down, and feel better.
- Then we could bring him home.
- I've really noticed how much the ponies in a band stick together.
- They really need their band to feel safe.
- Yeah, it's a horse thing.
- Just pressing the disks now.
(machine beeping) Okay Jimmy.
Jimmy?
Oh no, I forgot he's back on the Tortuga with the tele-porter.
I gotta get these disks to him to get to the brothers.
(guinea fowl flapper whirring) - No problemo, got it covered.
Just put the disks in the guinea fowl flapper.
I'll get them to the guys.
- Thanks Jimmy.
- [Jimmy] Not that way.
Whoa, whoa.
- [Koki] Jimmy watch out for the tails.
- [Jimmy] Whoa, why are they attacking me?
- [Koki] It's their natural response to being bugged.
- [Aviva] And watch out for the stallion.
Don't annoy him.
- Ah, I guess I did.
Uh oh.
(guinea fowl flapper crashing) This is harder than I thought.
- [Koki] Jimmy, you can do it.
It's just like a video game, and you're the best gamer I've ever seen.
- You're right, I can do this.
Okay, let's try this again.
I see the stallion.
(tails whipping) Missing the tails.
(grunting) Low angle move.
(cheering) That was easy peasy.
Kratt bros, I'm on my way.
- Wow, what's taking Jimmy so long with those creature power disks?
- Uh, nothing.
- Two creature power disks coming up.
- Thanks, Jimmy.
- Oh no.
(water splashes) My disk.
Thanks for finding it buddy.
Now if you could just hand it over.
Really carefully.
(disk snapping) Oh no.
My wild pony power disk, it's broken.
- Ooh, that's a bummer, bro.
But at least we have one disk to activate pony power with.
And rescue Spooky.
Except for one other small complication, bro, before we can save Spooky, we need to touch Spooky.
Just to activate pony power.
- Okay, how about this?
When we find Spooky, I'll try to get close to touch Spooky and you clear the area of anything that might spook Spooky.
- Okay, sounds like that could work.
- Where is he?
Aha.
- Hmm.
(gasping) - Ooh, Chris.
Not that way, buddy.
(laughing) - Activate wild pony powers.
(neighing) Look it worked.
You're okay now, right Spooky?
- Oh yeah, the pony power suit did the trick.
Being a herd animal, Spooky just needed the security of other ponies.
And I need a ride bro.
(neighing) - Hop on dude, and let's get Spooky back to the band.
- Giddy up, brother.
- Okay, okay, I'm going.
Hey, I'm going.
You don't have to kick me.
(clicking tongue) - Get a move on now.
- Ow, loosen up, you're holding onto my mane too tight.
- Come on, move it Marty.
(smacks Martin) - Okay, that does it.
- Whoa.
(water splashes) (screaming) (claws snapping) Whew, that was close.
No way you're ever getting those big pinchers on my nose.
- Do you wanna walk or do you want to ride?
- Oh.
Okay, sorry bro, got a little carried away.
(neighing) Well this is going to be a great mother and baby reunion moment.
There.
(horses trotting) (screaming) - Surprising stallions.
- Whoa.
(hits tree) Ow, you got me.
(stallion neighing) - You gotta dance, Martin.
- Dance?
I'm not really in the mood for dancing.
- The stallion dance.
- Oh, you mean the parallel prance.
I know that one.
This guy is pretty tough.
- You've got to be confident, Martin.
Don't let him psych you out.
- Okay, okay.
But he's not backing down.
- [Aviva] Stand up to him.
(stallion neighing) How about this move?
(Martin neighing) Oh, ow he bites.
(screaming) (groaning) Oh, mom and foal, back together again.
- Awe, he's so cute.
- [Aviva] And he's so happy to be back with his mom.
- Well, that's a creature mission accomplished.
- [Martin] Yeah, Spooky is back in the safety of the band.
Living free and in the wild.
- We're back at the Chincoteague Na tional Wildlife Refuge on the Assateague Island.
We've seen some really cool wild pony powers.
But, we are just starting out to get to know all of the great things about wild ponies.
- That's right Martin, but don't forget, these wild ponies are really only semi-wild.
They were once domesticated and now they're living wild.
There's really only one true wild horse in the world.
It's called the Przewalski's horse and they can be found wild in Mongolia, in Asia.
- Living out here on this wild island it can get pretty itchy for the ponies sometimes.
But they've got different ways to deal with it.
A pony can reach back with its hind foot and scratch its head.
They also help out each other.
Ponies can stand head to tail together and then with their teeth scratch each others backs.
Now that's team work.
- These wild ponies eat this salt marsh cord grass and other, not very nutritious grasses.
In order to get the nutrition they need, they just have to keep on eating it.
But, they have the mouths to eat it.
They have these soft lips that grab hold of the grass and then they have sharp incisor teeth that just snip it right off at the base.
So they move through the salt marsh like big, giant creature lawn mowers.
- Wow, this band if full of pintos.
A pinto coloration is when you have whites, and browns, and blacks, and different colors kind of mixed together in cool patterns.
That's the foal practicing running.
It's in the early stages because he was only born 10 days ago.
Right away in the first day he can stand up and get ready to run.
But you can see he's a little wobbly.
Horses have evolved to able run in at a very young age because they have a lot of predictors that are out to get them and this is the way that the young foal can survive.
- It's been a lot of fun adventuring with a band of wild ponies.
- We'll see you next time.
Keep on creature adventuring.
- We'll see you on the creature trail.
