It's a good thing I'm wearing this comfy warm coat and soft beanie.

Can you imagine if I didn't have these things to keep me warm?

Even with these warm clothes, it's still muy frio out here!

(bell rings) Oh, there's Barry.

I wonder how he's keeping warm today.

(playful horn honking) (bell rings) - [Barry] Good morning, mis amigos!

Notice something different about me?

Hmm?

Sí!

My colorful warm beanie!

It keeps this old bell warm and cozy on chilly days like today.

The beanie acts as insulation between me and the cold.

"Insulation" is what keeps you warm when it's cold outside.

Think of it as a cozy shield [mystical music] that traps your body heat so it doesn't escape!

And, you know, when I saw Miss Laura walking into school a little while ago, she looked pretty cold!

And, I think she could use a beautiful beanie like mine to help warm her up.

I'm gonna check the art room for supplies and see if I can knit one for her.

Yeah, I know how to knit!

I do!

But, right now, it's time for you to get to class.

(bell rings) (playful horn honking) (Miss Laura exhales) - Ooh, it's starting to get a little warmer in here!

Hi, everyone!

My name is Miss Laura, and it's so wonderful to have you in my classroom on this very chilly day.

While it's cold here, it can be much colder in other parts of the world, like way up in the Northern Hemisphere.

That's where the North Pole is!

And, all the way down in the Southern Hemisphere, that's where Antarctica and the South Pole are.

And, between the North Pole and the South Poles are all sorts of places where it can get really cold, too.

Temperatures can get pretty low depending on the season, the weather, the time of day, or altitude.

Altitude means how high something is from the ground.

The higher you go, the greater the altitude.

That's why places high up, like the mountains, get so much snow!

There are a lot of mountain ranges that can get pretty frosty too, like the Rocky Mountains, the Alps, and the Himalayas.

And speaking of the Himalayas, that's where today's story takes place.

The Himalayas are the world's highest mountain range, and in those mountains is a region called Tibet.

So, let's take a trip to Tibet to find out how cold it is.

Our story today is called "Yvonne the Yak," written by Leon Blume and illustrated by Eduardo Ramirez.

♪ (reads the book) "Y is for Yvonne the Yak.

"She lives very high up in the mountains of Tibet.

"A yak is a little like a cow, "but much bigger.

"Yvonne is owned by a Tibetan family.

"They depend on Yvonne for many things.

"It is very cold in Tibet.

"Yvonne has long fur.

"Her owners cut some of her fur "to weave ropes, belts, and bags.

"They sell these to make money.

"Yvonne's milk is very rich.

"Her owners make cheese "and butter from her milk.

"Yum!

"Yvonne is very strong.

"She pulls heavy farm machines for her owners.

"Yvonne's owners do not have wood to make fires.

"How do they keep warm?

They use Yvonne's dung!"

That's her poop!

"They shape the dung into patties.

"They burn them in a stove.

(crackling fire) "This keeps them warm.

"Can you guess what Yvonne likes to eat?

"She eats grass, "little shrubs, "and moss.

"She has more than one stomach.

"This helps her digest her food.

"Yvonne has very large horns on her head.

"What does she do with these horns?

"She uses them (crack!)

to break through ice.

"She finds her food under the ice.

"Very few animals could live (hawk screeching) "so high up in the mountains.

"That is why Yvonne's owners depend on her.

Work hard, Yvonne!"

I had no idea that people in Tibet depend so much on yaks in that culture.

Those yaks sure are special, huh?

Hmm.

I wonder what other animals do well in cold weather.

(wind whistling) (flutters her lips) Definitely not me!

I sure hope it warms up in here soon!

(playful horn honking) (bell rings) - [Barry] I know, I know!

I went a little overboard.

But, I want to get this beanie to Miss Laura as soon as possible.

(laughs) And, you just can't rush art and fashion!

Oh no.

It's a little hard for a bell to knit, but I do it for the people I care about.

And, I'm almost done!

(bell rings) (playful horn honking) - [Miss Laura] Since today is quite chilly, I thought we could learn another way to warm up, by drinking a nice cup of hot cocoa.

One fun thing about making hot cocoa is there are a lot of different ways to do it.

But, I'm gonna show you how I like to make my special hot cocoa!

First, grab your favorite kind of milk.

It could be regular, almond, or oat.

I'm just using regular whole milk for mine.

Have an adult help you pour it into a sauce pan and heat it up on the stove over low heat.

When it's in the pan, whisk in the cocoa powder and let it heat up until it gets nice and warm.

♪ Looks like it's ready!

Now, I like to add in some chocolate chips to make it extra chocolaty!

Just put in a handful in and stir it around until they melt.

♪ Here's a little secret I use to make my hot cocoa taste even better: a little bit of vanilla extract.

Mm mm!

(plop!)

Now that it's ready, make sure to get extra help pouring it into a cup.

And now, you can also add some delicious toppings.

You can use whipped cream, crushed candy canes, more chocolate chips, whatever you want!

Me?

I'm adding marshmallows!

♪ And now, it's time for my favorite part.

Drinking it!

Be sure it's not too hot before taking a sip.

(blowing) ♪ Mmm!

So good.

Perfect for warming up on a cold day.

(bell rings) Oh, there's Barry!

I wonder if he likes hot cocoa, too!

Hmm.

(playful horn honking) (bell rings) - [Barry] Mm mm!

On a frigid day like today, some hot cocoa and cozy clothing is the perfect balance to keep you warm and comfy.

¡Y mira!

Guess who found the perfect balance of not too big or not too small, but just the right size for Miss Laura's beanie?

Me!

(laughs) I'd better hurry and get this to her quickly so she'll stay warm while helping us review everything we learned today!

(bell rings) (playful horn honking) - [Miss Laura] Barry really outdid himself this time!

Today, we learned about how both people and animals handle the cold weather and keep warm when the temperature drops, like in our story about Yvonne the Yak.

"Very few animals could live "so high up in the mountains.

Then, Barry got all tangled up trying to knit my new beanie!

- I know, I know!

I went a little overboard!

- [Miss Laura] And in case you didn't notice, my favorite part of the day was getting to make a tasty cup of hot cocoa!

Mmm!

Here's a little secret I use to make my hot cocoa taste even better.

On days like today, when it's gloomy and cold, it's nice to remember that you can still find a lot of warm and fun things to do.

Whether you're outside with a jacket playing on the playground, or inside all bundled up in a blanket and reading a good book, there are plenty of ways to have fun, even when it's cold.

So, enjoy!

(playful horn honking) (bell rings) - [Barry] You know, I've actually really enjoyed this change in the weather!

It's so nice to take a little break from the sun and be able to enjoy some cold weather activities.

So, maybe now that school's out for the day, I'll go to the mountains and do some sledding!

(chuckles) Wait a minute, can bells sled?

Hmm.

(chuckles) There's only one way to find out!

(bell rings) (playful horn honking) - [Eddie] I'm sure glad that, just like the animals I learned about today, my jacket keeps me insulated.

El gorro actúa como un aislante entre el frío y yo.

El aislamiento es lo que te ayuda a mantenerte caliente cuando hace mucho frío afuera.

Cuando vi a la maestra Caryn llegando a la escuela esta mañana, parecía que tenía mucho frio.

Y pensé que quizás, le vendría bien un gorro bonito, como el mío, para atrapar en calor.

Voy a buscar lana en el salón de arte para tejerle uno.

Yo soy Señora Caryn, y es un placer tenerlos aquí en mi clase en este día tan frío.

Aunque aquí hace frío, en otras partes del mundo se pone MUCHO MÁS FRÍO.

Como en el hemisferio norte, donde está el Polo Norte, y en el hemisferio sur, donde están la Antártida y el Polo Sur.

Y entre el Polo Norte y el Polo Sur hay muchos lugares donde también puede hacer mucho frío.

Las temperaturas pueden bajar según la estación, el clima, la hora del día, o la altitud.

La altitud se refiere a la altura a la que algo tiene en relación al suelo.

Cuanto más alto esté, mayor es la altitud.

¡Por eso es que cae tanta nieve en lugares altos, como en las montañas!

Hay muchas cordilleras donde puede hacer mucho frío: por ejemplo, en California tenemos las Sierras, un poco más al este están las Montañas Rocosas - the Rockies.

En Europa están los Alpes, y en Asia, está la cordillera Himalaya.

Y justo, en el Himalaya, es donde se desarrolla el cuento de hoy.

El Himalaya es la cordillera más alta del mundo y en sus montañas se encuentra una región llamada "Tíbet".

Y vamos a ver qué tan frío se pone en esa parte del mundo en el libro que vamos a leer hoy.

Se llama "Yvonne la Yak", escrito por Leon Blume, e ilustrado por Eduardo Ramírez.

Vaya, no sabía que la gente - y la cultura del Tíbet dependía tanto de los yaks para sobrevivir.

¡Esos yaks sí que son especiales!

Eso me hace pensar, ¿qué otros animales aguantan bien el frío?

(viento silbante) ¡Brrr... yo definitivamente, no!

(bocina jugetona) (sonido de campana) - [Barry] ¡Ya sé!

¡Ya sé!

Se me pasó la mano un poquito... Pero quiero entregarle este gorro a la maestra Caryn tan pronto sea posible.

Pero ya saben, ni el arte ni la moda se pueden apresurar.

Tejer es un poco difícil para una campana, pero yo lo hago con todo corazón por la gente que me importa.

¡Y ya casi termino!

(sonido de campana) (bocina jugetona) - [Señora Caryn] Como hoy hace frío, pensé en otra forma en que podemos calentarnos.

¡Vamos a tomar una sabrosa taza de chocolate caliente!

Y hay muchas formas diferentes de hacerlo.

Pero te voy a enseñar cómo yo hago mi chocolate especial.

Comenzamos con tu leche favorita: puede ser leche normal, de almendras, o de avena... Por mi parte, yo solo uso leche entera.

Pide a un adulto que te ayude a poner la leche a calentar en la estufa a fuego lento.

Ya que esté en la olla, agrega el chocolate en polvo y mézclalo mientras se calienta... hasta que esté bien calientito.

Y ya que está caliente, me gusta ponerle unas cuantas chispas de chocolate - para darle ese toque extra de chocolate.

Solo necesita unas cuantas.

Y aquí está un secreto que yo uso para hacer mi chocolate más sabroso.

¡Un poquito de vainilla!

Mmm!

¡Luego le puedes poner otras cosas deliciosas!

Como crema batida, helado, lo que tú quieras.

Yo, le voy a poner unos bon-bones, ¡marshmallows!

Y ahora, mi parte favorita, ¡beberlo!

Asegúrate de que no esté demasiado caliente.

¡No te quemes!

Sóplale (soplando) un poco en la taza, antes de darle un sorbito.

So, looking around online, I found this video, and it looks like a good one!

- [Narrator] Let's meet some amazing creatures, para ver como aguantan el frio in a world full of ice and snow.

¡Primero tenemos el poderoso oso polar, the mighty polar bear!

with its thick fur and big cozy layer of fat under its skin, está bien abrigado para el clima frio.

Next is the penguin!

Los pingüinos usan un traje impermeable made of thick waterproof feathers that keep them nice and toasty!

And, look over there!
