WE SPOKE WITH THE WEST MICHIGAN HIS PANIC CHAMBER OF COMMERCE ABOUT A PROGRAM THAT LAUNCHED DURING THE PANDEMIC TO BRIDGE THE GAP BETWEEN COLOR IN THEIR INDUSTRIES.

>> THERE ARE COMMON THEMES THAT MANY LATIN TALENT ACROSS WEST MICHIGAN INDUSTRY EXPERIENCE WHETHER THEY IMMIGRANTED HERE.

IT WAS VERY HARD FOR KNOW FIND MY PALL, FIND MY WAY IN THE COMMUNITY.

THE STRUGGLE TO DEVELOP EQUITY IN THE WORKPLACE AND SOMETHING THAT THE WEST MICHIGAN HISPANIC CHAMBER OF COMMERCE HAS DOVE INTO HEADFIRST DURING THE PANDEMIC WITH THE FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM BUILDING BRIDGES THROUGH EDUCATION.
>> WELL, WE FELL AT THE INTERSECTION OF WORK FORCE AND EDUCATION, WORKING PRIMARILY WITH HALT TIN COLLEGE STUDENT ARE.
REPORTER: IN A SNAPSHOT THE FELLOWSHIP CONNECTS TALENT ACROSS MICHIGAN WITH EACH OTHER IN AREA EMPLOYERS TEACHING UPCOMING WORKERRERS THE INS AND OUTS AND HELPING COMPANIES BUILD CULTURAL CONFIDENCY FOR EXPERIENCES.
AS LATIN TAM LENT CULTURALLY WE BRING ASSETS THAT ARE NOT TYPICAL IN THE WORKPLACE, DOUBLE CULTURE ALLOWS US TO MOVE AND NAVIGATE OF CONTINUE WE COME FROM DUAL LANGUAGE BACKGROUNDS WHICH HELPS US IN THE COMMUNICATION, WE ARE A COLLECTIVE CULTURE, WE ARE ALWAYS LOOKING FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE GREATER GOOD OR THE GROUP.
JESSICA PROGRAM MANAGER SAYS SHE DOESN'T BELIEVE THE UNIQUE TALENTS LATIN X EMPLOYEES TEND TO BRING ARE BOLE BEING UTILIZED BY MODERN DAY EMPLOYERS BUT SEEN AS CULTURAL BARRIERS.

THERE IS ALWAYS A DIFFERENCE IN THE MAJORITY IN THE WHITE CULTURE.
WHEN OTHER PEOPLE ARE TALKING WE REMAIN QUIET AND LET THEM FINISH.
OFTEN WHEN YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT BRAINSTORMING IN AN OFFICE FIT ARE NOT ENGAGING IN THE CONVERSATION AND NOT INSERTING YOURSELF.
YOU MAY LOOK DISENGAGED OR NOT INTERESTED AND THAT COULD PLAY A HUGE FACTOR IN PROMOTION, AND MOBILITY.
>> SHE SAYS THESE DIFFERENTS CAN PLAY IN MORE THAN OPPORTUNITIES IN THE OFFICE AND THE GAP CAN HINDER LATIN X TALENT'S ABILITY TO GET IN THE DOOR.
I SEE THIS EVERY DAY, AND I KNOW THAT TALENT DOES EXIST, HOWEVER, IT IS THE PROXIMITY WHEN IT COME ARE CUPS TO SOCIAL CAPITAL.
WHO YOU KNOW, WHO KNOWS ABOUT YOU REALLY MAKES A DIFFERENCE IN WEST MICHIGAN, RIGHT?
IN THE SMALLER COMMUNITY.
AND SO, WHENEVER THERE IS OPPORTUNITIES OR INFORMATION, YOUR AMOUNT OF SOCIAL CAPITAL REALLY DETERMINES WHETHER OR NOT YOU GET ACCESS TO THAT INFORMATION.
SO WHEN THERE IS A JOHN OPENING, OFTEN, EMPLOYERS USE WORD OF MOUTH ADVERTISING.
THE LIKELIHOOD OF THE OUTCOME THAT WILL APPLY FOR THAT POSITION, IT WILL REFLECT YOUR CURRENT WORKFORCE.

>> WHEN I SHOWED UP AND BLEW MY MIND, WHEN YOU WALK INTO THE ROOM WITH PEOPLE WHERE W THE SAME AMBITIONS AND THE SAME GOALS, IT REALLY HELPS WITH YOU THAT CONFIDENCE AND, YOU KNOW, IT REALLY SHOWS YOU THIS IS HOW MINORITY ANY MORE.
THIS IS DEMOCRATIC.

WELL, WE HAVE SEVERAL LATINO THAT IS CURRENTLY IN COLLEGE THAT ARE THE CHILDREN OF WOKERS AND MANUFACTURERS WORKERS THAT DON'T HAVE THE SOCIAL OR THE SOCIAL NETWORKS.
WHEN I MOVE BACK IN 2009.
HE SAYS THEY FELT NUANCED WHEN TRYING TO MAKE CONNECTIONS.
I CAME WITH 11 YEARS OF INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE FROM SPAIN, NEW MEXICO AND ENROLLED A COUPLE OF GROUPS IN GRAND RAPIDS TO NETWORK.
I WAS TRYING VERY HARD TO GET TO KNOW PEOPLE, BUT THE ONLY LATINO THAT TIME.
I WAS 9% WHITE AND SUPER NICE ME.
VERY, VERY NICE PEOPLE.
BUT WHEN I WAS TRYING TO GET INTO DEEPER RELATIONSHIPS EVERYTHING STOPPED THERE.
ALMOST LEFT WEST MICHIGAN ALL TOGETHER, THEY FOUND A SAFE SPACE IN THE WEST MICHIGAN HISPANIC CHAMBER WHICH LEADS.
TODAY HE SAYS THE STAKES ARE HIGHER THAN EVER BEFORE.
SIGNIFICANTLY IN WEST MICHIGAN.
WE JUST HEARD THE PROJECTIONS THAT IN THE NEXT 25 YEARS THE LATIN X IS GOING TO GROW 130%, SO WE DON'T MAKE SURE THAT WE CULTIVATE THIS TALENT AND THIS TALENT CONNECTS WITH A LOCAL EMPLOYERS AND EITHER THIS TALENT IS GOING TO ACCUMULATE HUGE AMOUNT OF DEL, THAT IS GOING TO HURT OUR ECONOMY OR THIS TALENT IS GOING TO LEAVE.
TO OTHER CITIES IN THE COUNTRY.
SOMEHOW A MIND STET THAT IS EN GAVED IN THE WORK FORCE FOR GENERATION THE PROGRAM SAYS PARTNERS IS KEY.
>> WHAT I STARTED, WE HAD TWO INITIAL PARTNERS, TODAY, WE HAVE 15 PARTNERS, WITH YOU BUT I WILL SAY WE GOT MORE NO'S THAN YES.
CREATING COME CONTINUES SIN THE WORKPLACE WHEREVER ONE CAN THRIVE.

WE NEED TO BE PREPARED FOR THE ENVIRONMENTS WE ARE GOING TO BE A PART OF.
HE SAYS THESE ARE THE EARLY SALE SEEDS OF CHANGE, NOTING SOMETHING THIS SIGNIFICANT IN WEST MICHIGAN WILL TAKE YEARS TO GROW, BUT ITS SUCCESS COULD BE FELT GENERATIONS DOWN THE ROAD.

SO WITHIN THE FIRST YEAR OF THE INITIATIVE WE HAD A 6% PLACEMENT RATE AND SO FAST FORWARD TO 2.5 YEARS IN, THEN AT IN THE OF OUR FIRST FELLOWSHIP OUR PLACINGMENT RATE IS ALMOST AT 80%, SO ITATION HUGE INCREASE, AND I THINK THAT WE KNEW WHAT DIRECTION WE WERE GOING INTO, WE JUST NEEDED TO KIND OF CONNECT THE PIECES AND GET PEOPLE ONBOARD.

AND SO WITH THE FELLOWSHIP, I REALLY GAINED AN UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT THE WORK FORCE REALLY LOOKS FOR IN TERMS OF STUDENTS LIKE ME AND LOOKING INTO YOU KNOW, LOOKING FOR A JOB IN THE NEXT COUPLE OF MONTHS AND REALLY JUST PREPARING MYSELF FOR, YOU KNOW, MAYBE, YOU KNOW, THE BAY ASS THAT MAYBE IN THE WORKFORCE, ALSO, JUST IN TERM OF SETTING MYSELF TO LOOK AT MY STRENGTHS AND BEING ABLE TO YOU KNOW, ENHANCE WHAT I HAVE TO BE ABLE TO BRING TO THE TABLE.

BUT EVEN NOW, I SEE THAT, A GOOD MAJORITY OF THEM YOU KNOW, I DON'T WANT TO, YOU KNOW, POINT NAMES OR ANY HINGE LIKE THAT.
TERMS OF GETTING MOSTLY WHITE EITHER MALE OR FEMALE STUDENTS OVER, YOU KNOW, MINORITIES IN GENERAL, FOR ME, IT REALLY DOES MATTER, YOU KNOW, WHAT THE WHAT, THE TOUCH STUDENTEST THIS WANT TO INTERVIEW AND WHO THEY ACTUALLY END UP INTERVIEWING IN THE FIRST PLACE BECAUSE MOST OF THE TIME EVEN WITH APPLICATION AND IT DOESN'T GET AS FAR AS THE INTERVIEW PROCESS.
AND JUST IN TERMS OF ALSO, DIVERSITY INCLUSION POLICY, THAT IS LASS BIG THING BECAUSE ONCE YOU GET INTO, YOU KNOW, THE SPACE OF WHERE YOU WILL BE WORKING, YOU KNOW, DEPENDING ON JUST DEPENDING IN HOW YOU ARE WORKING, IT ALSO AFFECTS YOU ONCE YOU ARE ACTUAL THINK.

>> WELL, I FELT SUPER EXCITED AND I THINK, ANY TIME A PASSION IS SEEING STUDENTS KIND OF COME ALIVE AND UNDERSTAND AND SOME OF THES CONTRIBUTING AND HELPING SHAPING THE WORLD, AND THE OPPORTUNITY TO PARTNER WITH THIS HISPANIC CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, TO INVITE 30 TO 40 STUDENTS IN TO HELP SHAPE AND NOT ONLY SEE AND UNDERSTAND HOW WE WORK AT STEEL CASE BIX PERIENCE THAT THROUGH A PROJECT WAS REALLY EXCITING.

SO I THINK ACROSS THE NATION AND IN JUST GENERAL TERMS OF WHAT WORK TABORS DEVELOPMENT, DIVERSITY, EQUITY, INCLUSION IS AT THE FOREFRONT OF MANY COMPANIES, AND MANY UNDERSTAND HOW IT IMPACTS BUSINESS AND THE BOTTOM LINE TO HAVE DIVERSE TALENT AND ON TEAMS AND SO, STARTING FROM TWO WHICH STEEL CASE WAS ONE OF THOSE, ONE OF THE TWO WHEN WE STARTED THEY REALLY GOT BEHIND THIS IDEA, YES, THIS IS NEEDED, AND WE WILL PARTNER WITH YOU GUYS AS YOU FIGURE IT OUT.
THEY HAVE BEEN ACTIVE PARTNER, I THINK, AS WE HAVE BEEN MOVING ALONG FOR THE YESES THAT WE HAVE GOTTEN FROM PARTNERS GROWING FROM 2 TO 15 HAVE REALLY SIGNED UP IN THAT WAY, HAVE NOT JUST BECOMING FINANCIAL PARTNERS TO HELP SUPPORT THE WORK, BUT BEING ACTIVE, AND ESSENTIALLY STEPPING UP AND ACTUALLY MENTORING DEVELOPING TALENT ON THE ONE-ON-ONE BASIS.
SO I THINK THAT HAS REALLY MADE DIFFERENCE IN HOW MUCH PROGRESS WE HAVE MADE AND HOW OUR OUTCOMES HAVE CHANGED FROM YOUR ONES.
THE GROWTH HAS BEEN RAPID.
