WE HAD A CHANCE TO TOUCH ON SUNBONNET SUE.
JEAN RAY LAURY HAS WRITTEN AN ADORABLE BOOK, AND MY FAVORITE PAGE IS WHEN SUNBONNET SUE SEES HER FIRST CONTEMPORARY QUILT.
OUR OWN BETSY FREEMAN FINISHED HER SUNBONNET SUE IN THE RAIN, THAT WE HAVE ENTITLED "THAT'S DUCKY."
AREN'T THOSE LITTLE GIRLS HAVING FUN MARCHING BACK AND FORTH ACROSS THE SURFACE OF THAT QUILT?
NOW, WHEN THIS WAS HUNG AT OUR LOCAL QUILT SHOW RECENTLY, IT WAS HUNG BACKWARDS.
WE'RE GOING TO HAVE TO SHOW YOU, THROUGH THE MAGIC OF TV, THE BACK OF THIS QUILT.
NO WONDER THE BACK OF THIS QUILT IS ENTITLED "SOMEWHERE OVER THE RAINBOW."
WHAT A GREAT WAY TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF LAP QUILTING.
ALSO NOTICE THE BLACK GALOSHES.
THE IMPRINT OF THE QUILTING LINES COME RIGHT THROUGH TO THE BACKSIDE.
SHOW NUMBER 3 WAS "FROM FIELD TO FABRIC."
THIS GIVES US A CHANCE TO SINCERELY THANK MR. BOGGS IN THE COTTON FIELD RIGHT DOWN TO THE FINISHING PLANT, ALL THE VERY COOPERATIVE PEOPLE THAT HELPED US IN PRESENTING THAT AWESOME STORY TO YOU, "THE PRODUCTION OF COTTON."
AND DID YOU KNOW WE HAVE FOUND A STATUE IN ENTERPRISE, ALABAMA DEDICATED TO THE BOLL WEEVIL?
THE MEXICAN BOLL WEEVIL FIRST APPEARED IN 1915.
IT RAVAGED THE COTTON SO MUCH SO THAT FARMERS WERE FORCED TO TURN TO PEANUT FARMING AND OTHER TYPES OF FARMING.

I HAVE REALLY ENJOYED USING THE OVERLOCK MACHINE TO FINISH THE INSIDE OF SKIRTS AND YOKES OF DRESSES.
I MIGHT GIVE YOU A LITTLE HINT ABOUT USING THAT MACHINE.
ONCE YOUR BLOCKS HAVE BEEN SEWN, ESPECIALLY ON SOMETHING SUCH AS THIS WHERE YOU KNOW THAT THIS FIGURE HAS TO BE SEWN INTO THIS-- YOU HAVE YOUR FIRST SEAM AND THEN IN ORDER TO DO THIS SEAM, YOU'RE GOING TO HAVE TO PIVOT.
NOW, ON THE OVERLOCK MACHINE, THAT WILL PRESENT A PROBLEM BECAUSE IT'S GOING TO CUT INTO THAT ANGLE.
SO I WOULD ENCOURAGE YOU TO GO AHEAD AND SIMPLY PULL OUT THE CUTTING DEVICE-- MAINTAINING YOUR QUARTER-INCH SEAM ALLOWANCE-- AND THEN YOU WON'T HAVE ANY PROBLEMS WHEN YOU DO THAT PIVOT RIGHT AT THAT POSITION.
HOPE YOU ENJOYED LEARNING ABOUT THE SPOOLS AND MAYBE YOU'RE GOING TO TRY A SPOOL TWIST QUILT.

KATY CHRISTOPHERSON SPENT SOME TIME WITH US EXPLAINING ABOUT THE KENTUCKY QUILT PROJECT AND HOW THAT HAS LED TO MANY OTHER PROJECTS ACROSS THIS COUNTRY.
THIS WAS ONE OF THE FIRST BOOKS TO COME OUT ON THE ACTUAL PROJECT.
I'VE OFTEN WONDERED, WAS THERE A QUILT ON THE MAYFLOWER?
WELL, I'VE DONE SOME RESEARCH AND I FOUND OUT THAT IF THERE WAS, IT WAS PROBABLY USED IN BETWEEN BEDS FOR PRIVACY MORE THAN WARMTH.
BUT ACCORDING TO THE ORANGE COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY IN ORLANDO, FLORIDA, THERE IS A QUILT THERE SUPPOSEDLY THAT CAME OVER ON THE MAYFLOWER.
THE ALBUM BLOCK WITH NAMES IMPRINTED-- WHEN YOU STOP AND THINK ABOUT IT, NAMES ON QUILTS WERE THE ONLY WAY FOR A WOMAN TO BE REMEMBERED OR RECOGNIZED.
QUITE OFTEN, GRAVE STONES DISAPPEARED AND IT WAS ONLY MEN'S NAMES THAT WERE ON RECORDS IN THE EARLY 19TH CENTURY.
SO IT'S NICE THAT WE CAN CONTINUE MAKING THIS TYPE QUILT.
SHOW NUMBER 6 WAS "BARGELLO PATCHWORK."
REMEMBER, WE THREW AWAY THOSE TEMPLATES AND CONCENTRATED ON PIECING AND RE-PIECING.
NOW, I HAVEN'T FINISHED THIS LITTLE DITTY.
I'M STILL PLAYING WITH IT.
SOMETIMES IT'S NICE TO SIMPLY SPLICE IT APART, PIN IT OR PASTE IT UP TO JUST A-- IN THIS CASE, JUST A BOARD, AND I'M GOING TO LIVE WITH IT FOR A WHILE DECIDING WHETHER I WANT WHITE OR COLORS IN BETWEEN ALL THOSE STRIPS.
IT'S NICE TO THINK ABOUT OUR BARGELLO IN THE MANY WAYS AND THE MANY OPTIONS THAT WE HAVE.
ONCE YOU SPLICE IT APART, YOU CAN SIMPLY KEEP ALL YOUR COLORS IN THE SAME ARRANGEMENT, BUT PUT A SOLID COLOR IN BETWEEN.
OR YOU MIGHT WANT TO JUGGLE THOSE STRIPS AND TAKE SOME UP AND THEN SOME DOWN SO YOU CREATE A DIAMOND.
STILL, THERE'S A BLACK STRIP IN BETWEEN OR A DARK STRIP.
WHEN YOU'RE ACTUALLY SEWING THE STRIPS RIGHT NEXT TO EACH OTHER, YOU MIGHT WANT TO COME UP ONE WHOLE SEAM, AND I LIKE TO THINK OF GOING UP 1, 2, 3, 4 TIMES AND THEN BACK DOWN AGAIN BEFORE YOU START UP AGAIN.
AND THAT'S ONE SEAM APART.
OR, IF YOU WANT A GENTLER WAY THAT IS CREATED, ONLY GO UP HALF WAY.
AND THAT WAY YOU HAVE A SOFTER LOOK IN YOUR FLAME DESIGN.
WE CAN TAKE THE RECTANGLE AND MAKE IT GO ASKEW A LITTLE BIT.
I CALL THIS PATTERN "THE WAVE."
I LIKE TO THINK OF JUST KEEPING A TEMPLATE NEAR THE SEWING MACHINE OR IN YOUR-- IN YOUR SEWING ROOM SO THAT AS YOU PUT YOUR FABRIC AWAY, YOU CAN CUT OUT ONE PATCH.
NOW, IF YOU TAKE A FLAT SHEET, THE SIZE THAT YOU WANT TO COVER YOUR BED, PIN IT UP ON THE WALL, THEN YOU CAN CONTINUALLY ADD ALL THESE SCRAP FABRICS.
BEFORE YOU KNOW IT, YOU'LL START JUGGLING THEM AND MOVING THEM AROUND.
JINNY BEYER HAS REALLY BEEN RESPONSIBLE FOR BRINGING BACK THE CHARM QUILT IN HER BOOK, THE SCRAPLOOK.
IN THIS PARTICULAR PATTERN, THE-- ONCE THE DESIGN IS PUT THIS WAY, IN THE NEXT ROW IT IS FLIPPED OVER.
WHAT HAPPENS IS, AT THE TOP AND THE BOTTOM YOU GET A NICE WAVE DESIGN, BUT THE SIDES OF THE QUILT STAY STRAIGHT.
NOW, DON'T FORGET WOOL.
WE LEARNED TO BREAK THE RULES IN PATCHWORK.
THIS WAS OUR CHINESE LANTERN QUILT.
BARGELLO ALSO.
WE PUT PAISLEY IN A BIG FRILL AROUND THE OUTSIDE AND A PAISLEY BACKING.
ON SHOW NUMBER 7, WE LEARNED ABOUT FREEZER PAPER.
ALL IT TAKES IS THE SHINY SIDE OF THE-- WAXY SIDE OF FREEZER PAPER AND A DRY IRON, AND IT WILL STICK ON THE BACKSIDE OF YOUR FABRIC.
WE LEARNED ABOUT DOING STRIP PICTURE PIECING.
AND I WANTED TO SHOW YOU HOW I DID THE BORDER ON THE "HEY DIDDLE DIDDLE" WALL HANGING.
I SIMPLY TOOK ALL THOSE LEFTOVER FABRICS, SEWED THEM TOGETHER, AND THEN CUT THEM, RE-SEWED THEM TO CREATE THAT CHEVRON DESIGN ON THE OUTSIDE.
YOU CAN USE FREEZER PAPER IN HOME DECORATING TOO.
WE LEARNED THAT PAINLESS PATCHWORK PROJECT, THE FACT THAT YOU CAN TAKE SOMETHING, EVEN THIS TRAY, AND I HAVE SOME SPECIAL POTTERY SENT TO ME FROM MY AUNT MARIE IN SHELDON, IOWA.
AND SHE HAS SHARED THIS WITH ME AND I'VE SIMPLY TAKEN SOME CALICO, IRONED IT ON THAT WAXY SIDE, CUT IT APART, AND GLUED IT IN PLACE.
IF I CHANGE COLORS OF POTTERY, I CAN CHANGE MY WHOLE DESIGN VERY EASILY.
NO QUILTING.
THEN YOU REMEMBER, THE WILD GOOSE.
I PRESENTED IT TO MY FRIEND KAREN AND IT SAT FOR MONTHS.
NO WONDER, THE TEMPLATES WERE TOO SMALL.
SO I RE-DESIGNED IT, ENLARGED THE WILD GOOSE, AND USING THE FREEZER PAPER, CREATED A WALL HANGING FOR HER TO HANG OUTSIDE HER SHOP.
AND OF COURSE, I HAD TO ADD ONE OF THOSE STARS WITH PERSONALITY.
BUT THERE'S THE WILD GOOSE, AS YOU CAN SEE, AND I WANTED TO GIVE YOU A LITTLE HINT AS TO HOW I FINISHED IT.
NOW, I HAVE ONE MORE ROW TO ADD AND IT'S REALLY NICE TO KEEP THAT FREEZER PAPER ON.
PULL THAT OFF, AND THEN I'D ADD MY ONE LAST PIECE, WHICH IS JUST A SOLID ROW.
WHEN IT COMES TO THE QUILTING, I'M GOING TO DO WHAT I CALL INSIDE QUILTING.
I'LL PEEL THIS BACK, FINDING THE CENTER ROW.
NOW, I'VE ALREADY PIECED THESE TOGETHER, BUT I WILL RE-PIECE BY TAKING MY WALKING FOOT AND MAKING CERTAIN THAT MY BOBBIN THREAD IS GOING TO MATCH THE BACKING OF MY QUILT, TAKE IT TO THE MACHINE, AND WITH MY WALKING FOOT, I WILL START DOING THE MACHINE SEWING ALL THE WAY DOWN-- I CALL IT INSIDE QUILTING.
SO THAT ONCE THAT HAS BEEN SEWN, I WILL PRESS IT JUST A LITTLE BIT ON THE OUTSIDE AND THEN RE-POSITION MY NEXT ROW, GOING ALL THE WAY ACROSS THE BACKSIDE.
DID YOU SEE THE WONDERFUL FABRIC I GOT FOR THE BACKSIDE?
MORE BIRDS, OF COURSE.
NOW, TO COMPLETE THIS WALL HANGING, I DID A FRINGE BANNER THAT WILL GO-- BE ATTACHED TO THE BOTTOM.
BUT THIS'LL ADD A LOT OF MOVEMENT AND ALSO WEIGHT ON THE BOTTOM OF THAT WALL HANGING.
I LIKE TO SAVE THOSE PAPER TEMPLATES, THE FREEZER PAPER, EACH ROW BY SIMPLY CLIPPING IT TOGETHER WITH A PAPER CLIP.
DON'T FORGET ABOUT JILL'S QUILT, HER MADRAS MADNESS QUILT.
I LIKE THE WAY SHE-- OF COURSE, WE USED THE BLUEPRINT PAPER ON THIS ONE, WHERE WE SEWED ALL THE MADRAS STRIPS RIGHT TO THE PAPER.
SHE DID THE RECTANGULAR BORDER, BUT LOOK HOW SHE CARRIED THAT AROUND TO THE BACKSIDE.
I THINK THAT MAKES IT VERY NICE.
WHEN YOU'RE DOING A VEST WITH THE PIECING AND THE FREEZER PAPER, DON'T FORGET THAT YOU CAN WORK WITH INDIVIDUAL STRIPS SIMPLY PLACING THEM ON THE BATTING AND THE BACKING-- SAY, IF THIS IS THE BACK OF A VEST, AND SEWING THOSE AND FLIPPING THEM BACK.
OUR SHOW NUMBER 8 WAS VERY PATRIOTIC.
WHY NOT?
THE RENOVATION OF THE STATUE OF LIBERTY, WE'RE CELEBRATING OUR CONSTITUTION, THE BIRTHDAY.
AND I THINK IT'S TIME FOR US ALL TO DO A RED, WHITE AND BLUE QUILT.
SHOW NUMBER 9 WAS "KIDS' PLAY."
WE WORKED ON THE STRETCHED STARS PATTERN.
AND, OF COURSE, IF YOU'RE DECORATING ONE OF THOSE SWEATSHIRTS, DON'T FORGET THAT LAST STITCH ON THE SIDES IS WITH THE OVERLOCK MACHINE.
SHOW NUMBER 10 WAS ENTITLED "COME FLY WITH ME," DEDICATED TO MY MANY TRAVELS.
HOW CAN YOU FORGET THOSE 72 AIRPLANES?
I HAVE A FEW QUILTING STITCHES AHEAD OF ME ON THIS ONE.
BUT I WANTED YOU TO SEE HOW I SOLVED THE PROBLEM OF THE BORDER.
I KNEW IT NEEDED SOMETHING ELSE ON THE OUTSIDE, AND BY PICKING UP THE LAND INSIDE ON THE OUTSIDE, IT SEEMED TO PULL THE WHOLE QUILT TOGETHER.
NOW, I USED THE OVERHEAD PROJECTOR ONCE AGAIN TO TAKE THE IMAGE OF THE AIRPLANE AND CREATE THE LINES FOR THE QUILTING, THE AIRPLANE, THE SHADOW OF THE AIRPLANE, GOING ACROSS THE LAND.
I USED FREEZER PAPER FOR SEVERAL OF THESE PATTERNS AND I WANTED TO GIVE YOU A LITTLE HINT.
WHEN YOU'RE WORKING WITH THE FREEZER PAPER, DON'T LET THE SHINY SIDES MEET EACH OTHER AND THEN WITH THE IRON ON TOP.
THEY WILL STICK TOGETHER.
WE HAD ANOTHER SEGMENT ON THAT SHOW ENTITLED "THE FINE POINTS OF QUILTING."
WE LEARNED ABOUT THE PINE BURR PATTERN AND WE DISCOVERED THAT IF WE ELIMINATE THESE LITTLE TINY TEMPLATES HERE AND JUST GET RID OF THOSE, WE COULD CREATE A NEW ANGLE IN THIS AREA.
SHIRLEY CLEMMON IS WORKING ON THIS PATTERN AND SHE'S GONNA PUT 4 OF THESE TOGETHER.
IT'S STILL NOT GONNA BE A PIECE OF CAKE.
IT'S GOING TO BE A CHALLENGE TO DO, BUT I THINK IT'S GONNA BE A HANDSOME PATTERN.
SHOW NUMBER 11 WAS "FROM OUR HOUSE TO YOURS."
YES, WE FEATURED THE HOUSE PATTERN AND I ENTITLED IT, "THE HOMESTEAD."
WHEN I FINISHED THAT QUILT, I PUT A BRIGHT RED BINDING AROUND THE OUTSIDE.
YOU MIGHT ALSO REMEMBER THE LITTLE HOUSES WE HAD IN THE CHILDREN'S VEST.
WELL, IT'S ALL GROWN UP NOW, AND I'VE PUT IT INTO A BLACK AND RUST TABARD BOTH IN THE FRONT AND ON THE BACK.
FROM THERE WE WENT TO THE ABC QUILT, AND I'M HAPPY TO REPORT THAT I'VE GOT ONE ROW QUILTED.
I'VE PUT ARROWS IN THE QUILTING LINES, AND YOU CAN SEE THAT THEY GO IN OPPOSITE DIRECTIONS.
IT CREATES AN INTERESTING PATTERN, AND I HAVE A GREAT TIP FOR YOU.
GO AHEAD AND USE CONTAC PAPER AS YOUR STENCIL DESIGN.
IT SIMPLY ADHERES TO THE FABRIC, AND THEN ONCE I'VE QUILTED, I CAN PICK IT UP AND PUT IT ON THE NEXT BLOCK.
ALSO, WHEN YOU'RE DESIGNING-- WITH LETTERS THAT ARE ON A GRID, YOU NEED TO ESTABLISH THE SIZE THAT YOU'RE GOING TO BE WORKING WITH.
IN THE CASE OF THE ABC QUILT, WE WERE WORKING ON A 9-INCH SQUARE, SO WE KNEW THAT THESE WERE 6 ACROSS AND 6 DOWN SQUARES THAT MEASURED ONE AND A HALF INCHES.
NOW, IN THE CASE OF THE "M," I'VE GONE AHEAD AND SIMPLY DRAWN FROM THAT SIDE DOWN CREATING THAT "V" AND THEN, ONCE THAT "V" HAS BEEN DETERMINED-- AND HERE'S MY PATTERN OVER HERE TO FOLLOW-- I NEED TO GO DOWN ONE AND A HALF INCHES.
I'LL SHOW YOU WHAT I DID WRONG THE FIRST TIME.
AFTER I HAD THAT "V," I CAME AND WENT TO THAT CORNER, FORGETTING THAT I NEEDED TO GIVE THAT SAME PROPORTION FROM HERE ALL THE WAY DOWN.
SO KEEP THAT IN MIND.
NOW, ONCE YOU HAVE THIS DONE, THIS BECOMES YOUR MODEL.
THE FREEZER PAPER CAN GO ON THIS, AND I CAN DO MY STRIP PIECING FOR THE ABC.
OR IN THE CASE OF THE BORDER, REMEMBER I WAS GOING TO QUILT THE LETTERS "MOTHER KNOWS BEST."
WELL, THIS IS REALLY GREAT BECAUSE I CAN TAKE THOSE LETTERS AND DRAW THEM ON THE BACK OF THE CONTAC PAPER.
HERE'S MY "M," IT'S ALL DRAWN.
I SIMPLY PULL THAT OFF, PLACE IT ON MY LAYERED FABRIC, AND QUILT AROUND IT.
I GO FROM THE "M" TO THE "O."
ALL THE WAY THROUGH, M-O-T-H-E-R. "MOTHER KNOWS BEST."
AND THEN I'M GOING TO DO THE NUMBERS 1 THROUGH 10 ON THE OTHER BORDER.
OUR 12TH SHOW FEATURED A SHOW OF HANDS.
MANY LADIES WORKING IN THE YEAR QUILT CLASS.
JOAN PIERRO IS STILL WORKING ON ONE OF HER PROJECTS.

WE LEARNED ABOUT MACHINE QUILTING.

HERE SHE HAS CREATED MORE MINIATURES THAT SIMPLY FILL THIS MARVELOUS WALL HANGING.

ALSO FROM ENGLAND IS A TULIP QUILT.
IN FACT, ROWS OF TULIPS MARCH ACROSS THIS QUILT WITH A RIBBON BORDER.
OH, HOW TYPICAL OF ENGLAND.
IT'S AN ENGLISH THATCH COTTAGE.
NOTICE THE LOG CABIN BLOCKS THAT TAKE ON A NEW FLAIR AT THE BOTTOM.
OTHER WALL HANGINGS REPRESENT A VERY MODERN FLAIR.
A QUILTER LIKES TO EXPERIMENT AND TRY NEW ANGLES WITH WALL HANGINGS.
THIS SMALL QUILT WITH BRIGHT PINWHEELS ALMOST LOOKS LIKE THE PINWHEELS ARE READY TO GO WALKING.
DIXIE HAYWOOD HAS CREATED A FULL-SIZE QUILT WITH WHAT I CALL CONTAINED CRAZY PATCH DESIGNS REPRESENTED IN VARIOUS CUBES.
CRAZY PATCH HAS NEVER LOOKED BETTER.

ONE OF OUR GRAND PRIZE WINNERS WAS THIS LOG CABIN QUILT TAKING ON A NEW DIMENSION WITH PRECISE MACHINE QUILTING.

WE WERE FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO GET A FEW WORDS WITH JANE HALL AND PEGGY STEVENS, THE BUSY COORDINATORS OF THIS SYMPOSIUM.
AND WHY DO YOU LADIES WANT TO DO MORE FAR-OUT QUILTS?
I MEAN, DO YOU-- I THINK THAT MOST OF THE-- I'M A TRADITIONALLY MINDED QUILTER.
BUT I'M BEGINNING TO PUSH OUT INTO CONTEMPORARY WORK.
AND I THINK MOST OF THE CONTEMPORARY QUILTERS GROUND THEIR ART IN TRADITION.

AND THEN THEY GET TIRED OF REPEATING THE SAME OLD THING THAT'S RIGHT.
AND COPYING.
AND THEY-- THEY GET REALLY EXCITED THAT'S RIGHT.
ABOUT PUTTING COLORS TOGETHER.
AND IT IS AN ART FORM.
WELL, I THINK THE FABRIC DYING CLASSES THAT WE HAVE HAVE A LOT TO DO WITH IT TOO.
YEAH, YES.
AND PEOPLE ARE NOW BEING ABLE TO DYE THEIR OWN FABRIC.
THAT'S RIGHT.
THEY CAN EXPAND MORE.
THEY CAN EXPERIMENT, RIGHT.

Bonesteel: BEFORE WE LEAVE THE QUILTS WE WANTED TO SHARE WITH YOU A GOOD VIEW OF THE QUILTING HAND NOT ONLY ON TOP OF THE QUILT, BUT A VIEW THAT YOU NORMALLY DON'T SEE AND THAT'S UNDERNEATH.
I'VE TRIED TO PRESENT SOME NEW IDEAS FOR LAP QUILTING.
IN FACT, I HAVE AN ELONGATED STAR THAT'S IN PROGRESS.
DON'T GET DISCOURAGED ABOUT THOSE STITCHES.
THEY WILL GET SMALLER.
AND DON'T THINK THAT EVERYTHING I DO JUST FALLS INTO PLACE.

OR THE EAGLE I WAS TRYING TO DO.
WELL, SOMEHOW THE BEAK THAT'S SUPPOSED TO BE THERE GOT OVER HERE.
SO, IT HAPPENS TO ALL OF US, BUT JUST HANG IN THERE.
