Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship(upbeat music) - [Mrs. Gray] Welcome kindergarten math mights My name is Mrs. Gray And I can't wait to learn math with you today.
I have some very exciting math activities for us to learn Get ready!
Let's look at our plan for today.
Today, we're going to do a numeracy talk with our friend Dotson Then we're going to practice writing numbers to show how many today, when Dotson comes to help us warm up our brain, we're going to be taking a picture of the five frame that he shows us But after we see the magic five frame, we're going to be doing something a little trickier.
I'm going to ask you to try to build it however there is a secret question so when you see the five frame, take your picture like normal Hold it in your brain until the secret question, then we'll try to build it Are you ready?
Here comes Dotson now!
(upbeat sound) Dotson is our stigmatizing superhero He has brought today our famous five frame Take a picture with your camera (camera sounds) Now I want you to try to build what it would be if there was 1 less, that's kind of tricky math mights Do you think you can do it?
Our friend Maeve and Keisha are here to help share how they built their 5 frame Take a look at how Maeve built it on her 5 frame Maeve said that she built 5 on her 5 frame map Let's take a closer look at Maeve's thinking So Maeve said, when she saw it She saw 5 and she built it to look like this What do you think about what Maeve did I think Maeve did a good job but I think she forgot the secret question, remember, the secret question was build it with 1 less.
Let's see how our friend Keisha did Keisha said she built 4 on her 5 frame mat She thought that maybe we needed to take 1 away Let's take a closer look at Keisha's thinking so Keisha saw the 5 on the 5 frame that Dotson showed us, but she remembered the secret question to take 1 less Remember, less means fewer So we have to take 1 of them away Great thinking Keisha Let's see if we can put Keisha's thinking into a number bond So if we were going to build a number bond, we're going to start at the top with our whole all together in the beginning there was 5 so we can say the total was 5 then we can show the parts there was one that we had to take away because we wanted 1 less on our 5 frame So the first part could be one showing that 1 missing dot Then we could say the other part would have been 4 because there was 4 left If we had 1 and 4 and put them together, that's 5 Let's act it out math mights 1 and 4 together is 5 Can you do it with me?
1 and 4 together is 5 Let's look at our "I can statement" for today today I have a very exciting activity, I'm going to pretend that I am a professional pizza maker and what I'm going to be doing is building people's favorite pizzas.
What are you like on your pizza?
My favorite things on pizza are pepperoni and pineapple.
Mmm.
Do you like those?
Well today, our friends are here to place their orders for their favorite pizzas.
And we're going to have to figure out how many of each object to put on the pizza.
And then we're going to have to write the number that would match the number of objects.
Let's go to our friend Maeve.
Our friend Maeve said her favorite pizza has pineapple and peppers, now we have to figure out how many, so down here I have all my ingredients.
Now, if you noticed I used color chips today, I'm not going to use real pepperoni's and pineapples and peppers because on the pizza, it would get really greasy and I'm just having fun so I'm going to use my imagination and pretend that my chips are the ingredients for the pizza.
So Maeve said her favorite ingredient was pineapples using my cards.
I'm going to flip over, How many dots are there?
That's eight, four and four is eight So we're going to go to pineapple we're going to take out eight pineapple and put them on the pizza.
Helped me count 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 8 pineapple on her order I'm going to write eight.
So I remember there are eight pineapple Maeve said her next ingredient was peppers Let's flip over our card to see how many peppers Wow!
Let's count these 1 2 3 4 5, 6 7 we need seven green peppers Let's take out our green peppers and count onto our pizza 1, 2, 3 4, 5, 6, 7 Now we have to write seven green peppers We did it!
Maeve's pizza is ready Now let's see if we can make a pizza for Keisha Keisha said that her favorite pizza has sausage and pepperoni.
Do you think we can build her her favorite pizza?
Let's try Let's flip over to see how many pepperoni How many dots do you see?
There's four, we need four pepperoni for the pizza Count them on with me 1, 2, 3, 4 Now on her order sheet, we're going to write four pepperoni Keisha also said she loves sausage on her pizza Let's see how many sausage we're going to put on her pizza Flip over our card Let's count 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 Let's get out six sausage 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 Now we have to put six on her order form We did it!
We made Keisha's favorite pizza with four pepperoni and six sausage Now we're going to do another game It's going to be a little similar to the pizza This is called Math Libs Fun!
What we're going to do is take a picture on a dice And when we roll a dice it's going to tell us how many of each of the pictures we need to put into our big picture Are you ready?
So the first picture I have is a butterfly Let's see how many butterflies go in the picture Six We need to draw six butterflies Now I'm going to draw kind of fast butterflies 1 2 3 4 5 6 There are six butterflies That was so much fun Let's see how many lady bugs go in our picture Roll the dice, five, we need five lady bugs 1 2 3 4 5 There are five lady bugs I wonder how many flowers there's going to be Let's roll There will be three flowers 1 2 3 three flowers Now onto the bunny rabbit Let's see how many go in our pitcher One, one bunny rabbit And there he is, happening in our picture There is one bunny let's right as number one bunny rabbit awesome job math mights!
You were able to help me finish that Math Lib We were able to make pictures and numbers that match to go with what we put in our picture Now we are going to get to do a math story The main story we're going to do is going to be similar to the one you see here in our math picture We're going to be looking at this city and in this city there are so many numbers hiding We're going to be taken different pictures, counting them, building it on the 10 frame and then we're going to do some talking about the different numbers we see in the picture Take a look I built the number five and I wrote the number five Can you guess what I was looking at in our picture?
That's right, It was the trees There are five trees, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 Let's do our quick draw 1 2 3 4 5 I noticed in the picture, all of these cars I wonder how many there are, let's count 1, 2, 3, 4 5, 6, 7 Did you get seven?
There are seven cars I wonder if we can build it in our 10 frame Let's put one dot in for each car Well I know seven is more than five so I'm going to fill up the 5, 6, 7 Let's write the number 7 seven cars Hey, I wonder if we can draw 7 cars Remember our drawing and math doesn't have to have many details, just do a quick draw So we're going to drop 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 Hey, did you notice that the cars in the picture were two different colors?
I wonder if we could make a number bond that would match the picture of the cars So if we make a number bond we're going to start up top with the whole, all together there was seven cars, 7 cars total Now we can bring in the two parts Let's look carefully at the colors So if we look at the gray cars there are 1, 2, 3, 4 We can put four for the first part four gray cars Now let's look at the blue cars 1, 2, 3 there are 3 blue cars.
It is so important to be able to find numbers hiding inside pictures.
Think about a coloring book or maybe a storybook You can do exactly what we did, look at the picture You can count a number of objects You can build it on a 10 frame, you can write the number, you can even do a quick draw to show that number that you saw in your picture Now it's your turn, you are going to get to do a Math Lib You're going to be rolling a dice and figuring out how many each of the pictures you need to include in the big picture Don't forget to try to write the number to match amazing job today, math mights!
We worked so hard We were able to do our numeracy talk with our friend Dotson and then we practiced writing numbers that would match different groups of objects.
You worked so hard and I know Dotson would be very proud of us.
I can't wait for you to come back and join me soon.
