As a musician, I love writing music with my son.
It doesn't matter how goofy it is, we always have a blast.
(guitar strumming) I start by playing some chords on my guitar and off we go.
Writing the lyrics is his favorite part.
Not only does it help him use his imagination, it's also a great activity for his literacy.
Is mel a real word?
- Yeah.
- I use this as an opportunity to teach him new words and expand his vocabulary.
Do you know what that means?
Writing lyrics also pushes him to experiment with rhyming and alliteration.
What's a real word that rhymes with jar?
- Mo.
- We like to swap out different words and move lines around so they work better with the music.
This shows him how to revise his writing and do edits in real time.
Once the words are on the page, I make sure to record what we've done.
Who knows, maybe we wrote a hit.
