I was struck by the stories of people who had been wrongfully incarcerated for decades.
Later, I spoke with Board President Mike Farrell about a program to free the innocent.
Tell me about the Innocence Project.
They're finding about those people who are in prison and are not guilty of the crimes for which they were incarcerated.
Now, tell me about Andrew Wilson, the exoneree who helped start the Los Angeles Innocence Project, and his lawyer, Paula Mitchell.
They felt that he was innocent and they worked on his behalf and they ultimately got him released.
And he was so grateful he gave her $1,000,000 of whatever the settlement was he got from the state to start her organization.
You see that kind of generosity and thoughtfulness.
He was in prison for over 30 years for a crime he didn't commit.
My name is Andrew Wilson.
I'm exoneree out of the state of California.
I did 32 years in prison for a crime I didn't commit.
I was 29 years old.
Somebody in a neighborhood got killed in a car.
What is supposed to happen?
That is supposed to be some place I'm known to be in the area.
You know, that don't make me a killer.
Even though there was no direct or forensic evidence linking him to the crime, Andrew was convicted of first degree murder and sentenced to life in prison without parole.
His story describes witness tampering and evidence clearing.
Andrew being withheld from his lawyers.
The D.A.
that they put in there, when they gave her a case and she reviewed the case.
She told my lawyer, she says it was wrong in the beginning.
So even though he's now cleared, Andrew says the trauma of his experience still haunts him.
We'll learn how he's putting his life back together on our next edition for KCET.
I'm Bonnie Boswell.
