In September 1958, four years after the U.S. Supreme Court declared segregation unconstitutional, Virginia Governor Lindsay Almond closed a number of schools in Virginia including two in Charlottesville -- Lane High School and Venable Elementary School -- instead of allowing blacks to enter them.
