- [Presenter] Jazmin Faulkner is a senior at Wetumpka High School and maintains a 3.5 GPA.
- When I was a year old, unfortunately, my parents, my unborn baby brother, and my grandfather was killed in a car accident.
- And so she then went into the custody of her grandmother after the accident.
They lived in Louisiana, and when Hurricane Katrina came through, they lost everything.
When it got to the point that her grandmother could not adequately take care of her, Jazmin went into foster care.
- Then in 2010, I was lucky enough to come to my parents now, Terry and Keith Faulkner.
From, like, the first day I came with them, I knew this is my forever home.
- [Presenter] Among her many accomplishments, Jazmin has been a majorette for the Wetumpka High School band for four years, serving as a section leader for the past two years.
She was named the Elmore County Sports Medicine Student of the Year in 2020.
Jazmin is a member of the Senior Beta Club, the Key Club, the Recycling Club, and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
- You can either feel sorry for yourself or try to be an overcomer, and I chose to be an overcomer to try to get past all of my past, and just try to be happy and look forward to the future.
- [Presenter] For her perseverance in the face of multiple adversities, her generosity of spirit, and her dedication to the welfare of others, Jazmin is recognized by her school and our state as one of the five 2021 Young Heroes of Alabama.
