Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshiphello i'm beth courtney president of lpb and we're in the lpb studios but we're also in a junkyard and i'm a little overdressed for the junkyard but you're going to see a fabulous show i'm here with one of our stars of the show and the creator of ziggy's junkyard band clay ashay clay what why did you decide to do this wonderful series well um we we started it as a as my wife and i started as a project that we we were doing for years and years and years but we weren't able to to do it as great as i thought it could be until we got to come here at lpb and do it well i wanted all the people at home to see what we were doing you know we always have hundreds of hours of kids programs and you don't get to see them so tonight we're going to premiere ziggy's junkyard band your arts adventures now tell me there is no art on ziggy's planet right that's right so on ziggy's planet they're emotionally telepathic so if i'm talking to you and i hurt your feelings i'd know right away oh i'm so sorry but ziggy's emotical that transmits those feelings never worked and so when ziggy discovered art for the first time he realized there were other ways to express your feelings and he had to come to earth to find those well we hope tonight you will discover ziggy he he likes all kinds of art music dance and painting as well and he has great friends now what's your name sir the river river river you look like you've been a hippie before let's take a look at episode one of ziggy's arts adventures [Music] well i came to earth to [Music] it's [Music] [Music] so hold on tight cause we're ready to start [Music] [Applause] [Music] space [Music] oh ziggy oh hey nick what are you doing well i'm in my creative space so i'm from outer space and oh this is the band space and you're in your creative space i'm not sure i quite understand space oh well you see space is the available room to use in an area and this is my creative space because i'm in the area making art but i don't hear any music oh well i'm not making art that you can hear with your ears i'm making art that you can see with your eyes there's art for your eyes oh well you have no idea well so today i'm painting and well painting is when you take different colored liquids and you put them on a surface like this canvas here and then they dry and they make well a vision that lasts it's a junkyard yeah there's a pile of junk here and here's green grass what are you gonna paint up there the sky are you going to paint it earth blue oh right my rocket man oh it's your new habitat yeah so do tell what color is the sky on your home planet strawberry yogurt pink [Music] well that will make you think and great minds think pink sky or maybe we could add some polka dots pink sky no this painting is supposed to be a record of how the junkyard is now because things are changing out there the sky must be blue oh all right maybe jupiter blue well i think i'm just going to go with classic earth sky blue what are you going to put in the sky nothing just empty well it's not to focus sig it's negative space negative space doesn't negative mean bad is negative space like like a solar system where you're getting a lot of trouble no my alien friend negative space is already open spaces in art so like the space between the eyes of a smiley face or the silence between the phrases of a song like like jingle bells jingle bells well negative space is older places where what is isn't yeah there's negative space in all kinds of art forms like like painting music dance oh what's dance oh i keep forgetting you're new to earth and the arts here i'll tell you what i'll call my friend anna she's a dancer and i'll have her show you it would do much better to have a show you dance then for me to try to explain it with words jack that was a proper entrance what you doing jack i feel the need to fill this empty area in the band space so i'm measuring eight nine ten you hear that zeke he's talking about negative space in the room there's negative space here in this room it doesn't feel any different don't you worry ziggy i'm going to fill this empty space between us and them who's name i don't know i suspect friends we haven't met yet 8 9 10.
[Music] so what does negative space do nick everything needs a little personal space to call its own zig there's negative space in the world all around us like in the space between the middle of words and a sentence or the space between the posters on the wall over here or even where we live see me i grew up near a big city where people like to live right up next to each other there's not much space between neighbors there but where i'm from in essex just like in anna's neighborhood pleasant valley people like a little bit more space between neighbors so there's room for grass and trees and lawns to mow me myself however i've discovered that i like big space wide open you see downright rural just grass and sky like the junk in the junkyard like that magnificent pile of junk in our junkyard yeah that's where the real value is for me in this place here now you see all this empty blue sky allows me to fill up this painting with junk and junkyard it matters how you fill up a space zig you don't want too much going on everywhere it gets hard to focus on what really matters well i think i think that the negative space works in your painting nick i think that the blue sky makes it look like a nice day and i think that the junkyard looks important magnificent makes me think of all the dark space around earth when i first came on my rocket ship the earth was so beautiful and bright in the dark i'd come so far oh hi pat hi pat that was absolutely a proper entrance are you helping jack there's no helping jack he's out there with hammers and saws building something so big it's gonna poke through the roof he says it's gonna fit in this space but no way it's gonna fit he just doesn't have the right measurements okay pat's off to save the man space oh i just love how big jack dreams and how much pat cares i'm telling you you're not thinking about the amount that place can hold i am only thinking about the amount that place can hold value for this activity you'll need a piece of paper one die from a game and two different colored markers or crayons ready first choose one color and draw a symbol with that color at the top of your page now choose a second color and draw a second symbol right below that and a third color and symbol below that roll the dice and write the number next to your first symbol do the same for the second and third now make a picture using the number of symbols written next to each symbol [Music] we just drew the number 254 hearts are hundreds stars are tens and flowers are ones 254 and that's how you do a place value drawing [Music] hello hello ella you wild unicorn hi nick come in come in yeah this is ziggy and he's new to his parts and the arts and he's never met a dancer before it's so nice to meet you ziggy have you really never met a dancer before well i had heard music and then nick started painting today and then he said the word dance and well now you're here because he says words aren't the best way to understand dance wow movement does work better but there are a few words that may help you understand dance is created by combining energy plus space plus time like this kind of nick will you come dance with me so we can show him well i don't have on my dancing shoes so don't judge me any space where i dance is a safe space nick oh brilliant [Music] ziggy do you see how we're using energy to move our bodies through space i do but where's the negative space do you see the empty space created between me and nick as we move yes is that the negative space sure but in dance we just call it space those spaces allow you to clearly see the lines and shapes that we make as we move [Music] that was a proper entrance what do you have there jack it's an old tv that i think really fits the space after talking with pat my current project's going to stay outside so it can grow to its natural size besides this tv will help connect us to the world outside the junkyard neat that's why i love coming to the junkyard y'all are always doing something fun are we having a dance party make room [Music] [Applause] [Music] we should have put wheels on that so we can move it out when we need the space we should put wheels on everything [Music] i keep thinking how all these art forms like painting music dance are so different yet they're all still interesting ways of filling up space way to put it all together zig no turn up the music nick fitz i wanna feel it in my bones [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] hi dad hi mom hi it's such a great day here on earth i learned there are other kinds of art besides music there's painting which is for your eyes instead of your ears and starts as a liquid but dries into a solid you can see forever and i met a dancer and learned about dance which is art you make by moving your body through space oh and i learned about negative space which isn't a bad part of the universe where you get in trouble mom it's just space that's left open on purpose i wonder if there are other arts that fill up space in different ways i'll ask nick if there are other arts tomorrow what could they be more act for ears arise is it hard for noses [Music] support provided by on my planet but there was this big satellite called the voyager 1 that had a golden record on it and i heard music for the first time and it got me so excited well i just had to come here and hear more wow well that's wonderful you know i everybody's gonna have not to offend you but you have this thing on top of your head it's so cute but i'd love for you to explain to our friends what that does oh well of course it's my emoticon oh on my planet we use it to feel each other's feelings oh but mine doesn't work like the others oh the only way it works for me is if i well am looking at or seeing or experiencing art and that's why i had to come here because it was the first time that i could really share my feelings with others to be honest wow well that's wonderful well that shows the power of art doesn't it it really does and that's amazing ziggy can be back for many more adventures if you call right now at 888 888-769-5000 you can go online to lpb.org and of course you can use ziggy yep adult slug ziggy i mean what's not the love you have to admit ziggy why don't you tell us what do you think the reaction has been to your series oh it's been absolutely wonderful so many people have come together to see the show and when we did our planetary premiere the other day there was just so many people that were so excited to see what we were up to it was just wonderful so many smiles on people's faces and so many people ready to learn more about the arts whoa so they can see this right now online or of course here is a broadcast premiere so to speak for example yes again we want to bring more of these great programs to you our mission of course is to educate and entertain the families and the children of louisiana and we can do that with the help of this guy here at lpb we really love to bring everything together it's a well-rounded education and of course it's only with your support so again we'll check visa mastercard america express to discover those are things you'll learn about as you hang around here as a matter of fact ziggy okay and of course the sustaining membership give us a call right now thanks everybody let's go see another episode of you i would love that too i'm excited here we go [Music] it's all so much fun [Music] so hold on tight cause we're ready to start [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] cynthia play that note again for three seconds that low c play it now play it on and off again look it's dancing with you every time you go it moves with you in music we call that rhythm it's repetition of a sound see the jelly only moves when i play a sound your sax sounds removing the jello without touching it how does sound do that is there invisible parts of sound i can't see absolutely zigsta sound is made of waves our ears can hear but our eyes can't see sound waves start at the source the thing that makes the sound then the waves travel out bouncing off things or passing through them which makes the things move like my saxophone note wiggling right through your jello waves like the water ones we saw on the beach when we went to grand isle you got it so music is sound waves running through the air until they run into something like my ears music is science where to think about the evidence and figure it out zig i like eating snacks while you play sacks music makes a lot of things more enjoyable that's why i work so hard at it well uh thanks for practicing so hard to be good cynthia oh if you'll excuse me river and jack said i could hang out with them in the radio station after snack well it was my pleasure being your entertainment for snack time now let me play us out with some jazz rhythms oh mercy thanks for tuning in to the sweet sounds of basin street blues on your community radio station i'm river and here's a louisiana classic by jerry lee lewis to get you moving [Music] all right jack let's keep going with your dj lesson did you hear how i came out of that slow song just now speaking slowly and gently and then i sped up my rhythm as i talked to build up to the faster song i was gonna play next you gotta change your rhythm as part of the transitions so the audience gets ready for what's about to come but i think i only have one rhythm yeah jack i think we definitely need to start practicing your transitions we're going to be playing a lot of new music man that announcement recorded last week asking the community for music actually worked really feels like people are listening to our station now yeah well pleasant valley is starting to fill up with people more people more listeners and more artists exactly that's why we should record another one to persuade more folks to bring us music why don't we just hold up a sign like this well cause we're on the radio jack nobody can see us hello earthlings uh i saw the red light turn off it's okay to come in now right sure enough ziggy yeah man i just put on that snap a rocket whole lot of shaking going on what makes a song snappy do some songs have zippers or buttons instead no he's talking about the rhythm of the song whole lot of shaking is a upbeat fast song yeah man makes you want to get up and move do some songs make you not want to move ooh some songs make me want to lie down on the floor just lay low for a while why are they scary no well i mean sometimes look it depends on the song different rhythms make you feel different ways i like to listen to songs with a strong steady rhythm while i build things helps keep me going the song rhythm makes you work harder sure rhythm is a powerful tool oh no guys we're almost back on jack get ready to play hurricane season that'll really shake things up for the rats in the junkyard i always imagine the rat here live interesting lives [Music] hmm [Music] uh i just kept playing my sex louder and louder ziggy come here and meet john gray he's a trumpet player i play with sometimes hi ziggy oh that reminds me cynthia i have your share of the money we earned last night you can get paid to play music yeah this is our job sometimes when we play live people pay to hear us play like we did out of town last night people pay and they come and hear us play but sometimes we record our music and sell the recordings or it gets streamed which is less money i know that's right but cynthia you play for me all the time should i be paying you with like earth money no darling it's nice to have an audience when i practice so some humans create art and other humans enjoy art that's it we call these people patrons they pay to support our art patrons so i'm a patron because i enjoy art but i'm not an artist because i don't make art can you be both sure writers read books written by other writers that's right the musicians listen to other folks music you know it's something that we do matter of fact reminds me cynthia are you still coming to hear me play next week oh yeah wait no let me think and great mind think you have banned practice at the same time as john's performance can't be in two places at once how about you work with ziggy and his powerful science brain to teleport or time travel or maybe keep the band frozen with a freeze ray until the gig is up that's it keep the band here i'll get food for river to grill so the band's happy to just eat good food until i get back ooh grilling what to put on the fire think yeah i can make a tuesday gig i think the band will be happy to wait and practice once i hooked them up with a fire grilled lunch great while i'm here i want to drop off my album i heard the rivers say they were looking for artists to bring music to the station to be played oh i'd like to hear some of your music i have some questions about rhythm oh well great come on let's pop in there now all right if we come in john great oh man come on in we got 22 seconds left of this song before we're back live on the air again oh well great i wanted to bring this music on by because i really would love if you guys could play it on the air great put it on turntable one and i'll queue you up oh man you got time for a quick interview maybe play some live on the air sure you know i got my baby right here all right hey look like we're down to seven seconds of our 22 seconds left we're almost back neat elapsed time all right we're back in three two one hello listeners we're in the studio live with special guest john gray and our pal ziggy z do you have a question for john oh yes uh mr gray uh are you going to play a song with a fast rhythm now fast rhythm means something like this [Music] yeah wow uh can you play a slow song now so i can feel the difference oh sure i got this one for you [Music] oh well that made me feel slow and kind of sad well that actually was a little part of saint james infirmary blues now the blues is a style of music that actually gives us the ability to express sad emotions play something that shows our listeners the magic of music at work oh man i got something i can do right off the top of my head we call that improvisation wow [Music] hi grandma hi grandpa i hope you're great i'm having lots of fun on earth learning about all these different arts but today i learned a lot more about music like i learned that music repeats sounds to make a rhythm and those sounds move around on earth as waves that bounce off stuff or go right through stuff and sound can move stuff like my jello which is this wiggly food you can see through and it comes in different colors i can tell i still have so much more to learn here it turns out the feelings i get when i listen to music or experience other art are like everyone else's sort of turns out the arts make everyone feel inside not just me and that means i'm sharing the same feelings as others like you all do back home it's nice it's nice feeling all these different arts and knowing i'm not alone earth arts are neat [Music] support provided by louisiana healthcare connections your health our purpose hey welcome back everyone i'm clay ferriere joining you for the broadcast premiere of lpb's digital series ziggy's arts adventure and we're taking a short break to ask you to make your pledge of thousand who's this guy right next to me you are the creator and director of ziggy's arts adventure and you are clay right there how in the heck did you get the idea to do this series uh well the very very beginning of it was i was reading unproduced scripts for a friend of mine who okay who produces and i read a biopic of carl sagan and the idea that the voyager was out there flying through space with you know music and earth sounds and all that it was just so inspiring okay and so that's the the original idea just simply came from that there was a little alien out there who could be rocking and rolling to chuck berry you know and that that was how it started uh and then we just we developed it for like 10 years 10 years 10 years and then uh then we knocked on lpb's door okay we're so welcomed that's wonderful well we're really glad that you did knock on our door so to speak and brought the junkyard over here so to speak so that we can we can see these fantastic adventures we want almost the entirety of the crew our production designers from memphis but we love him so uh still down there that's one of the things that we really loved about this series and about so many programs that's lpp.org okay and of course again hovering right there in front of him there's the qr code give us a call right now again those folks are on the calls they're waiting to take yours call us right now back to the ziggy well i came to earth to learn [Music] it's all so much fun [Music] so hold on tight cause we're ready to start [Music] [Applause] [Music] contrast [Music] once we get this projector hooked up you'll be able to see rock and roll well i can't wait to finally see the music being made i've been wanting to see this since i first heard music back on my planet now i know why i like rock and roll but why do you love it so much oh well there's no art on my planet so when i heard rock and roll it was the first music i ever heard the first art i ever experienced no arts and then you heard rock music how oh well you humans sent out a spacecraft called voyager 1 which was filled with earth things like a map of how to find you but the best thing in voyager 1 was a record filled with earth music which was all great but rock and roll was awesome it made me feel things like never felt before so i built a rocket ship and came here to hear more what a great feat of alien engineering now i'm really glad i get to show you this film oh but jack um what's film well a great feat of human engineering film is the art of the moving picture oh neat moving pictures as soon as people invented cameras everyone started filming world events as they happen and creating experiences that couldn't exist in the real world well but those things are very different what really happened what couldn't happen yeah contrast contrast is one of film's best friends it is sure contrast are the differences that help us see more clearly movies are usually shown in the dark because the brightness of the film contrasts with the dark areas around the movie screen no contrast no film here's ziggy look at this photo of the band see how nick's bright boa stands out against his dark jacket that bright contrasted against the dark makes his bowler pop so our eyes see it clearly contrast puts things together so it's easy to see how they aren't alike i'm telling you ziggy differences make all the difference hello right indoor creatures i'm off to meet the muralist who's coming by what's a muralist it's an artist who paints big art on ceilings or walls usually outside but because they paint so big it's hard for them to find places to put their artwork it's against the law that paint on most buildings but by contrast here at the junkyard we're happy to have chris king come put art on our walls so with that pat's out to bring big new art to the junkyard oh oh sorry zig looks like you got tangled up in blue let me come help you man i'm really glad you stopped by there's lots of places in the junkyard for you to paint your mural awesome we got to be sure we find someplace where i have permission because i don't want to get into trouble with the law i get it man you know ever since the pleasant valley neighborhood moved in next door it's been a real contrast to how quiet it used to be now artists come in all the time hoping the junkyard has what they need it's a great way to meet new people but it's a shame the city didn't plan an art space for the neighborhood that's how you build a real community who's ready to force some big art upon this world oh hi you must be chris king i'm pat nice to meet you hey it's nice to meet you too well i grew up in new york and i loved seeing all the murals everywhere and i cannot wait to bring some of that big city energy to my funky little junkyard you got any idea what you want to paint oh yeah i think i'm going to paint what's going on around here you know art is a great way to express your feelings talk about your life and your community man i dig it that's exactly how music makes me feel well let's get this tour started walk this way [Music] power to the projector [Applause] oh no it's so energetic so expressive it's like i can see the music yeah film really gets things moving in ya i wonder if that's why they call them movies hmm anyway no one moved like chuck no one nope see in the 1950s rock and roll was still new many people had never heard or danced to music like it before it was very shocking for some folks it was a contrast exactly each artist creates their own art all of them every single one or from the people looks like you got my message [Music] i'm raylan muller i'm 10 years old and i'm in fifth grade my favorite thing about art is having all these ideas while you're doing it so it's basically like improv while you're drawing like at the moment so it's really fun i heard an art class one day that katz was doing this art contest and i was really excited and i drew a picture that has hands holding a pile of dirt with a sprout in it and it said help louisiana grow and then i won and one day at school it showed the bus with my picture on it it was really exciting now my picture is a moving mural [Music] so do you see any flat walls around here that you can use for your mural this one over here is flat and smooth but it might be a little bit small in contrast this one over here is larger but it might be too rough we've got a lot of important decisions to make standing at the crossroads okay let's bounce [Music] so who invented rock and roll i personally think sister was at a tharp invented it but really it was a bunch of different people and she was definitely one of them there were a bunch of different musicians on earth ah there's millions and dancers and muralists and sculptors and they're all different sure each of us is a one-of-a-kind creature seeing the world out of our own set of eyeballs no one else but you gets that point of view well i know i see things very differently from anyone else here on earth welcome to the club it sounds like you found your own point of view to express express my point of view i'm gonna go think about that jack hmm wow great viewpoint from up here from this point of view i can see the whole junkyard hey zig our alien friend hey man have a seat this is chris king oh nice to meet you i've never met a muralist before i've never met an alien before we've been trying to find the right spot for chris to clean his mural he needs a big flat smooth area right mr king that's right oh well uh i have a question as a muralist do you have a point of view i'd say my point of view has changed over the years when i lived in la my point of view was more influenced by my punk rock friends running on the streets then i moved to louisiana and now i'm more focused on teaching kids how to use their voice and their point of view to make art where are you from ziggy oh i'm from but i don't think humans can pronounce it no no i don't think we can zig i think that's something definitely only you can do i used to think i was the only one who was different but now i think each of us isn't like anybody else yeah everyone brings their own unique flavor i bring a memphis flavor um mr king i've been thinking you should put your mural on the front gate it's big and flat and smooth and it's right on the street as everyone comes in oh the front gate let me think about that great my stick so i paint on the gate and my art moves ziggy's right everyone who comes in and goes past the junkyard is gonna see it i choose the gate how about using glow-in-the-dark paint this time art in the dark no doubt ziggy the front gate's gonna be perfect thanks for the idea this is gonna make the front gate look so cool man if that brand of yours is gonna keep growing great thoughts it needs to get some sleep time to get ready for bed ziggy oh okay um goodnight everyone nice to meet you mr king oh it's nice to meet you too ziggy i'll be back tomorrow to get on that mural for you [Music] and if you really want to know punk you just have to listen thanks for the bedtime story pat now i really want to listen to some punk rock music soon good good night ziggy oh i'mma send a video back home to my parents no problem [Music] hi mom hi dad i've been learning so much there's so many art forms and ways to express yourself here that they have things in common like space and rhythm but they're all so different too oh today i saw my first film it shows things moving like in real life and i learned about murals which are big paintings outside oh but they don't move like film does oh oh that's contrast that's how things are different and art is how different people express their different points of view and and i learned i have my own point of view there you go ziggs now you sounded like a real artist express yourself express myself [Music] i could make art [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music]
