KIMBERLY SMITH NAMED PBS
VICE PRESIDENT, EDUCATION

ARLINGTON, VA, June 24, 2008– Rob Lippincott, PBS Senior Vice President, Education announced today that Kimberly Smith has been appointed PBS’ Vice President, Education. Ms. Smith most recently served as President of K-12 Digimedia, an educational product strategy and development consulting firm. She began her tenure on June 2 and reports to Mr. Lippincott.

As part of her new role, Ms. Smith will further develop and integrate PBS’ educational services for both teachers and learners of all ages. She is responsible for Education Digital Content Asset Repository (EDCAR), the principal project of the PBS Education Local/National strategy. She will oversee the content expansion of the PBS Teachers Web site, growing the “I’m a PBS Teacher” campaign into a Professional Learning Community for educators. The launch of PBS Teachers Connect, a new online education community for preK-12 educators, in June, will be the first expansion of the site. Ms. Smith will also identify and cultivate new funding opportunities for PBS preK-12 services and participate in business modeling and rights acquisition planning for education-related new media ventures for PBS.

“Kim brings experience, energy and ingenuity to PBS and the education initiatives we are just beginning to deliver,” said Mr. Lippincott. “Her proven results in managing the EDCAR Proof-of-Collaboration project and undeniable commitment to education over the past two decades make her an asset to PBS and its mission.”

“I am excited to return to the non-profit sector and partner with stations in the development of high-quality educational services that support PBS’s priorities,” said Ms. Smith. “The EDCAR and PBS Teachers initiatives provide exciting opportunities for collaboration in the creation of innovative resources and in the use of PBS and public media content in classrooms across the country.”

Prior to her consulting work with PBS on EDCAR, Ms. Smith held several positions in the Education division at Discovery Communications Inc. and ultimately became Vice President, Product Development. During her eight year tenure from 1999-2007, she led the build out of the Discovery School Web site and services, redesigned and rebuilt the united streaming service and managed the development of several digital media services.

Ms. Smith launched her career at the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) in 1989, where she spent nearly a decade working on the Annenberg/CPB Project –an endeavor of the Annenberg Foundation CPB to make K-12 and higher education media content more accessible through new technologies and distribution channels. She rose to the position of Project Officer for Educational Outreach, where she launched the project’s Web site, Learner Online (www.learner.org) and developed, implemented, and managed funding initiatives to create educational Web-based resources for teachers.

Ms. Smith holds a Master of Business Administration in Marketing from Johns Hopkins University and a Bachelor of Science in Journalism from University of Colorado at Boulder. She currently chairs the Community Outreach Committee of the NextGen Network’s Executive Leadership Council and is a member of the Greater Washington Urban League.
