"The growth of big news organizations means there is less competition and less diversity of news sources today compared to a few years ago."

... I blame it ...

There was no meaningful opposition to idea of war in Iraq prior to our liberation of that country. Hind sight is not what we need in our media. I blame it all on a "vast right wing conspiracy!"

These organizations are BUSINESSES. They are not public service organizations. As long as there are diverse opinions among Americans, there will be media that target these various groups and provide entertainment and information to meet their needs. It's good business.

... taking freedom of speech

I do not agree that big corp. can control what is heard or read, written or spoken. That is taking freedom of speech away. Our freedom's are being gradually eroded away and in such a fashion that people are not aware that it is taking place.

... matter of public safety
...
September 16,2003

Media outlets today are too big and powerful and they have a corner on much, if not most, of the media market in this country.
Clear Channel Communications has too many stations in a single market. They should have an on-site person or persons in all stations to monitor the local scene, break in and respond on the air to keep the public informed, when something happens like the Minot, ND, chemical spill happened. If there was a person there, he/she could have monitored the police scanner (and the police would known whom to call locally) and informed the public. It is a matter of public safety.
The air waves are PUBLIC Property and radio/TV station owners must treat the air waves as a priviledge to be able to broadcast on them. That priviledge should be removed when they abuse it, ie. cancel their FCC broadcast license.
Foreign ownership of media outlets in this country abslutely should not be allowed by law. Giant media companies, such as Viacom, NewsCorp and others, should not be allowed to own movie studios, newspapers, magazines, radio/TV stations, cable companies, textbook publishing companies, etc., all at the same time. I do not believe that a few conglomerates will ever have the best interest of the people of this country at heart, only next quarters "bottom line" and the profits they can generate.
Thank you.

... big conglomerates
...

We see far less in depth reporting about maneuverings in Washington when we travel to cities outside the Northeast. This is to be expected when the big conglomerates own ever-larger shares of each city's news media. It is a serious further threat to democracy in the US.

... without the checks

Concentrated media ownership lessens diversity and empowers large media owners to influence and inform without the checks and balances of a more competitive market. Advertising pays and media can influence opinions, so diversity and competion is vital.

... extreme competition

There is extreme competition to report the most about the same subject as the other media outlets. And, too often, that information is filled with too much conjecture. Aren't there more matters upon which to report so that station A and B report on items different from C and D?

... more local control

Yes, I agree. We need more local control over the media of all types, including radio, TV and newspapers, etc.

... wealth of divergent
...
September 16,2003

The internet has become a fantastic wealth of divergent news sources.
In the internet age (at least at the present) it is impossible to hide "the other side " of the story at least from the people who use the internet as a news source.

... may not sell

The key to the American perspective is incorporating a variety of attitudes and opinions on one given topic. This ingrained objectivity is in jeapardy when one opinion, one agenda stands alone at air time. Healthy debate is the key, but this is only possible when we are informed from both sides of the issue. It may not sell papers, but it does drive that which is truly American. guess it's true that you can't be sexy and smart in news media.
