Lou, NY Strongly Agree

... control by a few ...

September 16,2003

Attempts to control the media by a "few" could only lead to those "few" conveying not the facts but the opinions and views of those "few."

Carl, OK Agree

... counter productive ...

September 16,2003

when you have the few spewing out their own views, they have the ability to shape the views of the masses. this is counter productive to the free thinking process

Paul, NY Strongly Agree

... power is concentrated ...

September 16,2003

More and more power is concentrated in the hands of fewer and fewer people. We need to stem the flow of power away from the people.

Weldon, SC Agree

... lowest common denominator ...

September 16,2003

this question is confusingly structured; there is plenty of competition among media outlets, but NOT for the most rigorous pursuit of the whole truth but for corporate profits. This clearly leads to less diversity of opinion and to slavish pursuit of the "lowest common denominator" of public tastes/predjudices.

Jan, MN Agree

... more with profit and loss ...

September 16,2003

I think news media are concerned more with profit and loss than with actual reporting, and this is demonstrated in large companies like Clear Channel taking over stations in so many markets. It produces the news as cheaply as possible, and so what if the same news is broadcast everywhere.

Jim, TN Strongly Agree

... oracle of truth ...

September 16,2003

My 7th grade civics teacher stressed that all of us should 'be informed'. Those less experienced (younger) seem to view the media as an oracle of truth. For once I'm glad I'm 50 years old and know the difference.

Beth, TN Strongly Disagree

... silence the opposition ...

September 16,2003

What? Liberals are in favor of diversity unless it exists in access to points of view? Gimme a break! You're not fooling anyone! You want to silence the opposition. It won't work.

Without PBS; LinkTV; BBC and FSTV we would not have a clue what is really going on in the world. 9/11 proved that that is a problem for us as Americans. Other citizens of the world know much more about us than we do them.

... disturbed by effect on freedom of speech ...

September 16,2003

i am very disturbed by the growth of large media, by the kind of effect that a large media outlet can have on freedom of speech and by the problems created by lack of local news.
the doublespeak i am hearing by big media representatives on the current program disturbs me even more. my plainspeaking father calls it pure bull. we must defeat big media from obtaining control of the airways, from the ability to concentrate ownership. it is really frightening and reeks of control of the masses, and is antithetical and undermining of democracy.
