When a newspaper like The Hartford Courant is owned by a conglomerate housed out of state, I worry that I don't get the real story of what's going on. Business concerns and "the bottom line" seem to drive news now. This sickens me, who used to hold news organizations in high esteem. Now I don't trust many of them. (I do trust PBS, by the way.)

... sad turn

Information sources are limitless today, and growing steadily. The internet can provide access to 10 international papers, in 10 seconds. Cable, Satelite, etc. provide global coverage in seconds, from several different sources. Ten years ago the options were very limited as compared to today. Consolidation would never control every aspect or all opinions, in the deregulated market. CNN and their political friends may have dominated the 90s, but they are feeling the pinch, losing the monopoly. Flashpoints is funny. To have Bryant Gumbel, a known partisan, arrogantly discuss fairness, making judgements about objectivity is a joke. Flashpoints appears as propaganda from a political venue. PBS was rather unbaised so many years ago, and now is in the political push game. It is a sad turn.
Thank you.

I do feel that I have to go to international sources for topics affecting the whole world. For example, global warming is a topic that should be relevant but does not seem to strike a chord with Americans, or is it that the corporate world, of which big media is a part, does not want us to think about it?

I believe this is self-evident. The problem is exacerbated by the public when we argue about liberal vs. conservative. Big media has no grandiose objective other than the most base instincts of survival and growth. It is no longer the 4th estate that passionately protects public interests, it is an infotainment corporation where ratings, market share, and profits are the end objective. I only have faith in our citizen's common sense to see through the bright lights when it matters the most, although it is getting harder to find the truth.

WHAT WE SEE NOW IS BIGGER AND BIGGER COMPANIES BUYING ALL THE MEDIA THAT THEY CAN GET. WITH NO RESTRICTIONS FROM THE GOV. WHY IN THE WORLD DID THE GOV. BREAK UP AT&T YEARS AGO, BECAUSE THEY WERE SAID TO BE TOO BIG AND NOW HAVE SEEMINGLY JUST OPENED THE GATE FOR ANYTHING GOES. I THINK THAT THE AMERICAN PROPLE ARE GETTING THE SHORT END OF THE STICK.

If the FCC returned the required staff at each station and removed robot broadcasting then things would be acceptable you should not allow any broadcast without a live operator attending to end the likelyhood of a station missing a super hazard.. any multi staion broadcast location should be requred to have one live operator working per signal sent so one man wont be in a frenzy getting messages out on each station in that multi facility it is only fair to the public being served and will cut into the profit margin so it will be less popular to own muti stations in a low profit area and this also will help train the NEW journilsts for news of the future a training ground that is now missing NO MORE robot radio/ tv broadcasting no more dead air broadcasts due to a missed cute by robots

... glad for different approach

There are lots of choices, but unfortunately not great ones. The problem is not that it's dollar-driven, the problem is those covering news are out of touch with the heartland. The big three 6'oclock news cover the same stories with a liberal edge; I'm glad Fox and others are trying to offer a different approach.
