"The growth of big news organizations means there is less competition and less diversity of news sources today compared to a few years ago."

... unquestioning followers

There are, in fact, many more news resources than there were before the "new media" explosion. However, this is not all goodness. I find too many alternative, independent new sources are even less resonsible in what they report than major television news channels. There is also a tendency of these news sources to be "balkanized" in that unquestioning followers read, listen to or watch only those sources to which they already agree. The new media is a wonderful channel to reinforce fixed opinions by the exclusion of information and ideas that do not fit some predefined model for acceptability.

Despite the fact that the internet has allowed for a broader range of news sources, many times I will find the same article in local papers across the country and sometimes the world.

... i avoid some ...

in another part of this news media discussion i noticed that the statement was made that the news media needed financial backing. this financial backing comes for television with what is approaching 20% of each hour spent in random placed commercials. this rate of commercial advertising is an abomination to the viewer. in germany they give each sponsor one shot contiguously at the beginning of the program - AND ONLY ONE SHOT. advertisers are alienating their potential customers with this interruptive advertising. i avoid some channels on television because of the duration and frequency of their commercials.

As our choices of programs on t.v.become poorer,so we become less rounded fromn what we see. As the propaganda about what is"news",and newsworthy smothers the networks, we become enmeshed in the web.We really don't know what is happening.

Since the beginning of television, all three networks have "magically" put their news programs on at 6:30 PM and 7 AM ET. There never was any real diversity, cable, broadcast, big or little ownership all cover the same stories anyway...

celebrities are just people if they die or get hurt or do such things to other people they should not get more attention than the person who afflicts or gets afflicted by such things and just turns into statistics used for getting more money for police funding.

... Consumer choice
...
September 17,2003
|
Consumer choice, according to some, drives the selection of material that airs on the media. This is simply not true in today's media market, when reprogrammed material iis sent out to millions of viewers, based on what some "media managers" assume to be on interest to listeners.

September 17,2003

Thought I was being polite...was it that I thought local news was worse, the availability of foreign newspapers online was great, or wondered that the journalists' were a product of an educational system that seemed devoted to reading other people's opinion rather than the actual documents that I wasn't allowed respond..
