Bleed Blue, Live Green

Sheril R. Kirshenbaum by Sheril R. Kirshenbaum     Department: Culture

I'm proud to be part of one of the 'greenest' universities in the country. (Not literally at the moment--it's somewhat brown here lately because we're dealing with a serious drought). Duke not only hosts the Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions, but students, staff, and faculty are involved in all sorts of green initiatives that encourage global consciousness and local action. And as it happens, we also have a fantastic basketball team.

Well, if you watched the game last Thursday, you might have noticed the Cameron Crazies sported bright green Duke T-shirts... We're one of over 1,000 universities and colleges across the US that held events and activities on Jan. 31 as part of 'Focus the Nation'--a national campaign to engage students, political leaders and decision makers in discussions about solutions for global warming. The university also purchased carbon offsets equivalent to the electricity, steam and transportation consumed by the game, working in partnership with the renewable-energy company NativeEnergy. Neat, eh? Even our Blue Devil mascot donned green and fans were encouraged to carpool and participate our newly expanded recycling efforts.

Take look a look at Cameron in GREEN! And if you missed the game, Duke had an incredible second half to top N.C. State 92-72.
